Urban League Annual INTERRUPT RACISM Virtual Summit Held The Urban League of Rochester held its second annual Virtual INTERRUPT RACISM Summit presented by JPMorgan Chase & Co. and ESL Federal Credit Union September 14 and 15. The Buffalo Urban League, whose CEO Thomas Beauford, Jr., partnered with the Urban League of Rochester in the planning and marketing of this event to the entire nine-county Western New York area. The INTERRUPT RACISM Summit was an online, learning experience for youth and adults, designed for attendees to participate and come together to identify, interrupt, and dismantle processes of systemic racism. This year’s event featured seven keynotes from national thought leaders on issues relating to this year’s Summit theme “Health, Wealth, and Safety for BIPOC.” Marc H. Morial, President and CEO of the National Urban League, opened the event. Dr. Seanelle Hawkins, President and CEO of the Urban League of Rochester was featured in a fireside chat about her new memoir Checking In: How Getting Real about Depression Saved My Life—and Can Save Yours and her work advocating for mental health for people of color. Hawkins also appeared in the seventh keynote of the Summit in a panel of all six New York State Urban League CEOs. They discussed how their individual Urban League affiliates continue to respond to the double pandemics of COVID-19 and systemic racism in their respective communities. The Buffalo Urban League’s CEO Thomas Beauford, Jr. was also on this panel.
ROCHESTER, N.Y– ESL Federal Credit Union announces the launch of the ESL FirstTime Homebuyer Grant, a 10-to-1 dollar-for-dollar match, up to $10,500 toward down payment and closing costs, for eligible Black and Latino residents in Greater Rochester. According to U.S. Census data in the Hard Facts Update released in 2020 by ACT Rochester, homeownership rates among Black and Latino residents are 32 percent and 35 percent, respectively, in the Greater Rochester nine-county region. This is compared to 73 percent among white residents in the region. “The creation of the ESL First-Time Homebuyer Grant helps in addressing the inequitable homeownership opportunities that exist in our community,” said Faheem Masood, president and CEO, ESL Federal Credit Union. “These inequitable opportunities experienced by the Black and Latino communities have existed for generations, and have stood in the way of providing these residents with access to and attainability of homeownership, the most common of wealth-building tools. Our community cannot be prosperous so long as these inequitable opportunities exist, and ESL is committed to doing our part to embedding greater equity in our community so all who call Greater Rochester home can thrive.” For complete details and eligibility requirements about the ESL First-Time Homebuyer Grant, visit the ESL First-Time Homebuyer Grant page on esl.org.

Debate Walton Withstands the Slings and Arrows of Fear Mongering. Debate Makes Clear the Choice Between Bold New Leadership and the Status Quo.
O
The Nation's First Black Public High School STREET LEGACY PHOTOS BY DARVIN ADAMS
utside the Merriweather Library on the corner of Jefferson and East Utica a sea of blue T-shirt wearing advocates for Byron Brown and yellow T-shirt wearing supporters for India Walton rallied on behalf of their candidates in a display of political consciousness not seen in this town for decades. Inside, India Walton, the fearless young endorsed Democratic Party nominee, went toeto-toe against Brown, a 16-year entrenched incumbent and two mayoral hopefuls - Jaz Miles and Benjamin Carlisle. For 90 minutes she successfully stood her ground against the slings and arrows of fear mongering, veiled insults and doubt cast about her ability to lead. Last Thursday’s much anticipated debate laid bare the political chasm between the candidates - mainly Mayor Brown and Ms. Walton. Hosted by the Buffalo Association of Black Journalists and the legendary WUFO Radio, the questions covered many of the issues that concern voters from gun violence, police funding, poverty, schools, housing, taxes and safe neighborhoods. The issue of Ms. Walton’s Democratic Socialist status and “defunding” the police came up time and time again during the debate - issues Walton welcomed as they gave her the opportunity to clarify her position and to set the record straight. --Defunding The Police IssueCiting the rise in violent crime and other issues, Walton defended her position on police reform, - which she said, is not focused on dismantling or handicapping our police force. Walton accused Brown himself of “defunding” community centers, seniors and other services…“My plan is to free the police to do police work which is solving crime, investigating crime to keep our community safe." Brown said Walton was “completely wrong” by saying she will not defund the police. He said she proposes to cut $7.5 million and that would clearly be defunding police leaving 100 less police on the streets. Rebutting Brown’s claims, Walton noted, “The $7.5 million my opponent was referencing came from a very good study put out by the Partnership for Public Good.. after a thorough audit of the police budget.” The problem she said could be addressed through attrition and increased overtime. She assured it is not defunding rather “thoughtful use of tax payers dollars.” -The Socialist QuestionAt one point during the debate Carlisle attacked Walton as being “very confused” and said “we’re all terrified” that she will implement socialist policies…”why do you have to make everyone in Buffalo terrified?” Replied Walton: I have been a Democrat my entire life. I am currently the Democratic nominee for Mayor of Buffalo …I am a Democratic Socialist - Democrat is the first word in that term. It means that we put workers first, we take care of poor people, we take care of children, we provide healthcare for all. It’s as simple as that. Let’s put it to bed once and for all…! -Equity in DevelopmentThe question was asked about achieving the right balance in development projects between the medical campus, downtown waterfront and neighborhoods. Walton, citing her last job as director of building permanently affordable housing in the Fruitbelt neighbored declared, “I’m not anti-development…I am anti-development with displacement - we can do smart development that keeps neighborhoods intact, create mixed income neighborhoods with high quality amenities…and we can do it without draining tax payers….If a developer wants to develop something using tax subsidies, or our tax dollars, I believe there should be a legally binding community benefits agreement and there should be on going support to surrounding neighborhoods…If that is what you call socialism then sign me up…Let’s stop mischaracterizing who I am and what I believe…and ask
The nation's first Black public high school, Paul Laurence Dunbar High, opened its doors in Washington, D.C., in 1870. Once upon a time, the yearbook read like a Who's Who of Black America. Billy Taylor, the jazz musician. The first Black general in the Army. The first Black graduate of the Naval Academy. The first Black presidential Cabinet member. Of the first three Black women to get Ph.Ds, two of them went to Dunbar, and two of them taught at Dunbar. The list goes on and on points out Alison Stewart, author of First Class: The Legacy of Dunbar, America's First Black Public High School. "It's so stunning to think that in the South, before the Civil War, you could have a finger cut off if you were caught trying to learn to read if you were a slave. But Washington, D.C., while there weren't any schools for Blacks, they weren't going to stand in the way of Blacks getting an education. So as early as 1807, these small schools started popping up in churches and homes. Dunbar was always Black. It never integrated. And D.C. for that matter, legally desegregated but never really integrated. And that is the sort of the interesting social part of the story." And it started in 1870 with four students in the basement of a church." *Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872–1906), one of America’s greatest poets, gained international acclaim as a writer and voice for equality for African Americans.

Food is Medicine at Jericho Road Health Center ! Fruit and Vegetable Prescription Program Launched
J
ericho Road Community Health Center staff are writing fruit and vegetable “prescriptions” for patients. The Fruit and Vegetable Prescription Program, commonly referred to as FVRx, aims to reach patients who are medically at risk or have a diet-related chronic disease (i.e. high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, obesity etc.), and those who struggle to purchase healthy foods for their families. For many, tight budgets lead to a dual crisis of illness and hunger. While unhealthy diets contribute to many of the leading causes of death and illness, for many the obstacles to eating well are varied and overwhelming, especially when struggling with limited resources. This program seeks to increase access and affordability of healthy foods. Patients are screened for food insecurity and receive guidance and resources to assist them, including an invitation to the FVRx program. The program connects them to classes about nutrition and budget tips, as well as helping individuals to navigate programs available to support sustained food access locally. Vouchers are provided to each participant, so they can walk out and immediately access free fruits and vegetables at two local vendors. Emerging evidence suggests that these models will be a meaningful tool for the prevention and management of dietrelated chronic disease, and this program aims to support healthcare providers in starting a conversation about food and nutrition security. "This partnership with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Erie County and SNAP-Education is going to be extremely beneficial for our patients. Many of the people we work with
have health challenges that stem from lack of access to affordable, quality, healthy food - challenges like hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. We're looking forward to being able to get free healthy food into the hands of our patients and to provide them with additional local resources that will help them with sustainable food access." - Emelie Obrochta, Director of East Side Programs for Jericho Road Community Health Center. The program has partnered with Feedmore WNY’s brand new mobile markets and Lewandowski Produce in Buffalo’s historic Broadway Market, both of which will accept vouchers. Feedmore’s mobile markets will be onsite after each class for client convenience. The program will begin at the end of September at Jericho Road Community Health Center’s Broadway location. Vouchers are funded by a grant from the Centers for Disease Control, administered by HRI, Inc. and the New York State Department of Health. If you are interested in learning more about the FVRx program, contact Melissa Kimbrell, mjk397@cornell.edu.

Urban Christian Ministries to Celebrate 51st Anniversary Banquet
More than 50 years ago, the city of Buffalo was in racial turmoil. As a result, UCM was created by a group of city and suburban pastors with the goal of meeting the physical and spiritual needs of our city. 51 years later, UCM continues its outreach in faith-based activities through programs such as Kids Club, Brothers With A Purpose, Block Club Basketball, street outreach with A Grille & A Prayer, and our resident Summer Camp. Located at 967 Jefferson Avenue, UCM also operates a food pantry, alongside a free clothing boutique. Acting Executive Director, Kathy Jefferys, a vital part of the ministry in a number of different capacities since 1974, notes, “Through the years, it has been an honor to serve God and the community in so many ways on behalf of UCM, especially considering that UCM has positively impacted three generations of young people. “ Assistant Director, William Coplin, who began his service with UCM many decades ago, realized that our youth desperately needed positive role models. Compelled to make a difference, he has directed his time and energy toward saving young lives- physically and spiritually. UCM will be formally celebrating its 51st Anniversary with a banquet to be held at 6pm on Saturday, October 2, 2021 at the Classics V Banquet Center at 2425 Niagara Falls Blvd Amherst, NY 14228. MUSICIAN, VOCALIST, PASTOR: D'MOTT IS UNBOTHERED
D
e’juaine Motley grew up in the church, but he doesn’t define himself by the church. A musician, vocalist and pastor, Motley (who popularly goes by D’Mott) spreads the message of God’s love through his music. Recently cracking Billboard’s top 10 Internet gospel charts with his soulful single “Angel '' from his highly anticipated project Unbothered, D’Mott’s unconventional rise as a recording artist is a testament to his message about ultimately leading his life with love. “I hated church growing up,” explained D’Mott. “I had to be at church everyday, I had to clean the church...I loved God, but I hated church.” Growing up in a musically-inclined Christian family, D’Mott struggled with acceptance. Playing the guitar, drums and singing at an young age in church sparked his interest for music, but he admits he wasn’t the best musician. Recounting moments where people in church doubted his ability to play music, he briefly shifted his attention towards sports as a teenager before experiencing his unexpected beginning as a professional drummer - a moment he credits to “luck.” “There was a group coming to Buffalo on New Years Eve, and every musician in the city [was] playing. So I was the only guy available. I ended up getting that gig and the rest was history,” D’ Mott recounted. Starting his career touring with a gospel group named UNEEK out of Rochester at 18 from that first gig, D’Mott began networking with people in the industry. Touring with a plethora of r&b talents since then, the rising musician has shared the stage with top 50 acts in gospel like Marvin Sapp, Mary Mary, Tye Tribbett, and Ben Tankard just to name a few. His most
memorable accomplishment during this time was recording 2 songs on Earth, Wind and Fire’s last studio album Now, Then and Forever in 2013. “I believe that [playing] drums was a setup for me not to get incarcerated or not to die in the streets because I kind of gave up on life...At that time, I believe that God gave me that miracle of me playing for those artists because I would’ve quit.” D’Mott explained. Thankful for his success but eager to form a deeper relationship with God, D’Mott took a 5-year hiatus from music to focus on his family and ministry in 2011. As a married father of 6, the gifted musician started the Remnant House Outreach Church (RHOC) - a church that doesn’t subscribe to any denomination and doesn’t take offerings, but focuses sheerly on love. “I want people to understand love is love,” explained D’Mott. “It’s not about fighting the gay community. It’s not about fighting democrats or fighting republicans or the new independent parties. It’s not about what pastor is right. It’s not about what denomination or organization you’re with. It’s not about having beef...It’s about bringing the love of the land into its proper context.” Eventually channeling his message of love into new music, D’Mott’s earliest efforts back into the industry as not only a musician, but a vocalist showed major promise. Scoring a feature for one of his original songs “God Is The Way” in the christian documentary The Scroll and dropping a series of singles and projects laid the foundation for his most recent work Unbothered. Released on March 17th of this year, the 7-track project is a unique integration of r&b and pop sounds that lays the groundwork for D’Mott’s sonic interpretation of romantic love. Assisted by a handful of featured Buffalo-based talent like Rod Bonner, King Shad and YNX 716, D’Mott sings about marriage, relationship woes, staying in love and embracing family. With his single, “Angel” making waves on the national gospel scene, the resurging artist is excited that so many people are receptive to his music. “I thought that people were gonna crucify me for doing this r&b album, but ironically enough...it’s charting and mostly church people are adapting to it,” D’Mott explained. Bringing inclusivity and transparency to the Christian world through his music and leadership, D’Mott is one to watch. With his eagerness to spread God’s word, his message of love continues to reach new levels. You can listen to D’Mott’s Unbothered on all streaming platforms and watch his new music video for “Had it All” on YouTube. Learn more about him on dmottmusic.com

Julia Bottoms, 12" X 16", acrylic on paper, 2021
he year was 1967, the world just experienced the tragic death of John Coltrane, creating an enormous shock to jazz fans and music lovers alike. Today, the vision and popularity of the Pulitzer Prize-winning saxophonist is as potent as ever, with his music continuing to top the charts 54 years after his death. Born on September 23, 1926, and undeniably of one of the greatest saxophonists of all time, the Burchfield Penney Art Center at SUNY Buffalo State and Pappy Martin Legacy Jazz Collective will reunite to celebrate Coltrane’s birthday. The annual, collaborative festival returns September 24 – 25, 2021 at the Burchfield Penney after a pandemic intermission. "Throughout the health crisis, we embraced the role of ‘cultural first responder’ addressing the community's artistic needs with digital jazz offerings,” stated Dawn Martin Berry-Walker, Pappy Martin Jazz Collective chief executive/ artistic director. “This year's annual COLTRANE celebration welcomes back a signature, highly anticipated, in-person performance with a diverse line-up. Expect a once-in-a-lifetime explosion of jazz majesty.” Presented with the generous support of the Cullen Foundation, this year’s headliners include the incredible talents of Grammy-nominated saxophonist Tia Fuller with the George Caldwell Trio; and veteran heavy-hitters Curtis Lundy and Umoja, featuring Emilio Modeste, Wallace Roney, Jr., T.C. the 3rd, Terreon Gully and George Caldwell. Please note that proof of COVID vaccination and masks will be required for the duration of the shows. “The ache of the pandemic has touched every corner of the jazz world. Sadly, we lost many influential jazz and blues musicians to COVID-19,” said Renata Toney, Burchfield Penney marketing communications manager and event co-organizer. “An homage to these masters, this year’s COLTRANE celebrates the return of live jazz and the merits kind, gracious collaboration with the Collective.” COLTRANE 2021 artwork was designed by artist Julia Bottoms. The fourth, in a series of award-winning posters, Bottoms’ creativity now joins the ranks of Philip Burke, Stacey Robinson and Edreys Wajed. Limited edition posters will be on sale in the Museum Store Sept 23 – 26, 2021. All four are available for a bundled, discounted rate. Don’t miss that Trane!

From Willie Lynch To The Buffalo Party Line: Don’t Be Fooled Black Community!
50 YEARS OF
MARRIAGE! Congratulations to Bro. Duane and Tricia Madyun who will celebrate 50 years of Marriage with beloved family and friends on September 26! Best wishes to this beautiful couple!

"The single best thing President Trump did was put conservative judges on the bench and the legacy will last for 40 years! The parade of socialist jokers in Buffalo, led by @IndiaWaltonbflo, whining about ' attacks on democracy makes it extra sweet." The above comment was made recently (year 2021) by Chris Grant, Chief of Staff to former County Executive and US Rep. Chris Collins, talking about the decision made by Judge John Sinatra to put Byron Brown on the November 2nd General Election ballot. In 1712 Willie Lynch, a slaveowner, delivered this speech in part to other slaveowners, on the banks of the James River in the year. " I shall give you the outline of action but before that I shall assure you that distrust is stronger than trust and envy is stronger than adulation, respect and admiration. The Black slave, after receiving this Indoctrination, shall carry on and will become self-refueling and self-generating for hundreds of years! Don't forget, you must pitch the old Black male against the young Black male, the old Black female against the young Black female and the men against the women. You must set the dark skinned slaves against the light skinned slaves. “ You must also have your White servants and overseers distrust all Blacks and it is necessary that your slaves trust and depend on us. They must respect and trust only us. Gentlemen, these instructions are your keys to control them. Have your wives and children use them; never miss an opportunity. If used intensely for one year, the slaves themselves, will remain perpetually distrustful and divided for hundreds of years." When I read the statement by Chris Collins' former aide, I was immediately reminded of the Willie Lynch speech made so many hundreds of years ago. But I have to give Lynch credit, he was absolutely correct. African Americans are still operating under that racist and divisive system set in place so many years ago, to separate and divide us. So, instead of Buffalo's Black leadership congratulating and supporting this courageous, young Black woman who, against almost impossible odds, pulled out the biggest upset in Buffalo's political history by beating an entrenched sixteen years incumbent; they are throwing fuel on the fire by calling her names like radical, socialist, unqualified, inexperienced and not ready to lead; all those labels that racists have used to demean and dismiss Black candidates and elected officials, for years.

The saddest part of all, is that many of these Black leaders ran to the suburbs to live, along with their White counterparts because Buffalo was not good enough for them and their families. Well, that's all changed because our Black Mayor has learned what the Masiello, Griffin, and Sedita administrations learned: Give these Black leaders city developers status and you can buy every one of them, even those who are sleeping in White suburbia while they commute to Buffalo to build rental units or run anti poverty programs for inner city Blacks and Latinos. India Walton won the Democratic Primary fair and square mainly because her opponent may have been still following the Willie Lynch method of judging her not worthy because she was female and came from the 'Field' as opposed to the 'House' negroes line of succession. Buffalo voters, don't be fooled by the “Buffalo Party Line” that was put together and carried by Republicans living outside of Buffalo, for the expressed purpose of having Donald Trump's supporters dictate who we elect as the mayor of our city!

Challenger Community News • t hec hallengernews.com •September 16,2021
THE DEBATE continued from page 3 more questions and read more books. Brown then accused Walton’s comments about the Fruitbelt Land Trust as being “absolutely false.” According to public record he said the Fruitbelt Land Trust “did not build one single house so what she just said was completely false.” “It’s amazing that in your own city you don’t know what’s going on,” Walton shot back. She then Candidates: L-R, Miles, Brown, Walton, Carlisle gave the address of two houses that were in fact built and talked about how they did it in partnership with Habitat for Humanity . She also noted how the city refused to let them pursue a bigger project and forced them pay market rate for city owed land to build affordable housing to serve the public good. Brown came back later during the debate and mocked her “fairytale” of being a successful not for profit executive having only built two houses. “That was your great success?” he chided. “We could have done much more had we had the cooperation of the City of Buffalo that’s part of the reason why I’m running for mayor,” Walton replied. “ I know there’s so many people who do so much good work in this community and the barriers we face time after time from the second floor of city hall and it's time that we end that right now!” -ExperienceWhen the question of experience came up, Mayor Brown, proudly listed his accomplishments as having “successfully managed the finances of the city and citing the tax rate to the lowest level in 30 years. He also cited his diverse work force and his political resume history as a senior staffer in city county and state government, a city council member and member of the NY State Senate and now in his 4th term as mayor. Carlisle replied “I have absolutely no experience in politics” then took a swipe at Brown adding that nor had he ever “fear mongered, wasted taxpayers money..” “I don’t have government experience,” said Walton, “but as I said I’m a registered nurse, and what I learned is that we plan, we implement, and we evaluate. And what has not happened over the last 16 years is evaluation of how we are spending our money, where we’re putting our priorities and that needs to happen. When something isn’t working then we need change.” She then added that this year the year S&P actually lowered the city’s financial outlook to negative, and Fitch downrated our credit rating twice, most recently in 2020. “Cutting taxes means we are not funding municipal services like trash pickup, and snow removal. So let's think about what's actually being said and let's not allow the wool to be pulled over our eyes…” -TaxesWhen the candidates were asked if they would raise taxes if elected - they all said no except Ms. Walton. She said citizens she’s talked to said they would be ok with a modest increase in taxes as long as we can fund city services. “People are confused as to why we have a city budget that relies on fines and fees to fill in the hole….Before the American Rescue plan we were at a $65 million deficit we had our rainy day fund spent down to $100 million. We are not bringing in the equitable revenue to keep our city going, so unfortunately we’re going to have to look at a modest incremental tax increase in order to balance our books….” Brown accused Walton of “ making a false promise that doesn’t add up - a shell game.” He added that he had reduced more than a dozen fees or fines during his years in office. “Those fines and fees were not eliminated under the mayor’s own volition,” Walton shot back. “It was the Fair Fines and Fees Coalition that did that because of community outrage he had no choice… the exciting thing about me running for mayor is (if I win) people don’t have to fight and scream in order for me to do what’s right - yes I’m going to be honest, yes I said there would be an incremental tax increase in taxes.” -The Stadium,Term LimitsAll of the candidates agreed that there should be term limits. Mayor Brown did not respond to the question. They all also agreed that the Bills stadium would best serve the city if built downtown. Walton said she's ok as long as it did not displace people and that a re-investment in the community agreement is put in effect. Brown said the city had no say in the negotiations. Carlisle chided him, saying that as mayor of the city he should at least lend his voice and his connections to push for the stadium. Jaz Miles, to audience approval, said we need to bring back the Buffalo Braves Basketball team! The mayoral election is November 2. -a.b.
An Open Letter To The Community From Executive Director Tina Washington-Abubeker
I
African Cultural Center Crisis?
am writing this letter as the Executive Director of the African American Cultural Center of Buffalo, Inc. (AACC) to exercise my responsibility to the community to share some concerns that are disheartening to say the least. I have worked as the executive director for the AACC since July 1, 2020. Over the past year, despite COVID, I have made every effort to keep the center open and operating as a viable resource. I have done this in the face of many challenges from the current Board of Directors. In addition to differences of opinion regarding their role, duties, and responsibility as a Board and mine as the Executive Director, there has been constant conflict regarding the Board being overly involved the Tina Washingtondaily operations of the agency. The Board consistently goes against the Abubeker organizational structure, organization chart and bi-laws of the Board. Their actions and conduct contradict the guidelines and statutes that they have created and are counterproductive to the protocol typical of organizations in the non-profit arena. Unfortunately, the Board has been inexperienced, untrained, and ill-prepared to carry out its duties according to strategic plans and initiatives that can move the agency forward. The Board has not been open to any suggestions of training nor are they receptive to the idea of transparency for the sake of the agency as a whole. For the sake of simplicity, I have outlined some of the facts and issues: •The Board was not able to provide me an orientation at the time of hire and advised me to look in the files and the computer to orient myself. •Although I advised the Board that I needed to re-hire for positions that were previously occupied by agency support staff during the time of my predecessor’s employ, they refused to allow hiring and added those extra duties of three positions - Program Coordinator, Grant Writer, and Educational Directives staff to my already extensive list of duties. •Later I took it upon myself to fill the public relations position with opposition from the Board in the Spring of 2021. Every position that I have hired for has been met with contention. •In November 2020 I was told that the Board decided that the Chair would be coming to help me (because I had not been given an orientation). My pay was reduced, and she was paid a portion (of my pay). She stated that she would only be there for one month and be gone after Thanksgiving. She stayed for two months and spent that time taking notes and asking me questions; essentially requiring me to provide an orientation for her. •In December 2020 I was fired for restoring my pay to what it was prior to the cut. In correcting their mistake, I was accused of stealing. Even prior to them cutting my pay, I protested and advised them to no avail that their actions were not legal, moral, or ethical and I outlined the reason. •The Board received advisement to restore me to my position and pay me the back pay owed. To date I have not been paid. I required a contract, correct pay, and Board training for me to return to the job. To date, those measures have not been met and the Board training has not been put into effect and appears to be less of a priority. •The Board’s micromanagement and prioritizing of menial duties interferes with the administrative, fiscal, and capacity building functions of the Executive Director. Furthermore, they will not prepare the agency to move forward to the future of capital development. •There are decisions that should include the community stakeholders, the community at large, and participants/attendees/patrons. The board has discouraged this concept. •These entities need to create a Review Board and demand that the current Board resign or have term limits written into the bylaws. If not, we stand to lose the AACC which has been a beacon for generations as well as the historic Paul Robeson Theatre which is one of the oldest Black theatres that still exists nationwide. As an advocate, I refuse to compromise my integrity and moral obligation to the communities that I serve. I will invoke my rights under the Whistle Blower clause of the AACC Board Bylaws, however, this act of transparency is still likely to be met with consequence. I refuse to continue to be held administratively, financially, or legally liable for the decisions and governance of the current Board. I call upon the New York State Attorney General to protect the assets of this non-profit corporation. I cannot fight this fight alone, so I am seeking the community’s support, assistance and prayers. We cannot afford to lose this priceless cultural treasure! Tina Washington-Abubeker I can be reached at tr-wa@hotmail.com or tinawashingtonabubeker@gmail.com

Memorial Tribute to Beverly A. Gray On Thursday, September 16th, We Are Women Warriors group will host a Memorial Tribute honoring the life and legacy of the Late, Honorable Beverly A. Gray, on the 71st anniversary of her birth, September 16, 1950. Councilmember Gray was the first and only African American female to be elected Buffalo Councilmember at Large and the first woman of any race, to run for Mayor of the City of Buffalo. She ran for the seat in 2001 against incumbent mayor, Anthony Masiello. That Sept 11th Democratic Primary was interrupted by the 9-11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and other structures in our country. Ms. Gray eventually lost the election to Mayor Masiello when the primary resumed two weeks later. Many community leaders believed she would have won the Primary if the country had not been attacked and the voting delayed. We Are Women Warriors and the community will have a short program and lay a memorial wreath near the sign in front of the building dedicated in her honor. The program will commence at 5 PM, on Beverly A. Gray her date of birth, September 16th, at 335 East Utica St., near Jefferson Ave. For more information, please contact Sherry Sherrill @ 716-430-1158 or Betty Jean Grant at 716-602-5877.

Frontline Arts Buffalo Welcomes City’s Announcement of $2.5M for Arts Sustainability Fund Frontline Arts Buffalo (FAB) is pleased to announce the City’s adoption of the Frontline Arts Sustainability Fund, part of the Buffalo Transformation Fund plan, made possible by American Rescue Plan funds awarded to the City of Buffalo. This fund will provide $2.5 million over three years to frontline arts organizations, collectives, and artists. Frontline Arts Buffalo will work with the City on the program rollout and will release guidelines for the grant funding process in the Fall of 2021. Frontline organizations are often having smaller organizational budget sizes and staff sizes, serving and/or located within frontline communities, offering wages below the industry standard for the region, and prioritizing Black, Indigenous and People of Color in leadership, featured artists, and staff roles. The Frontline Arts Sustainability Fund will offer organizations, collectives, and artists access to grants that can have significant impact in terms of capacity or programming as they recover from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Bills Beaten by Steelers 23 - 16 he Buffalo Bills surpris- COVID – 19 affects your reT ingly having running spiratory system. Dawkins back Zack Moss inactive, lost 15 pounds and currently was a clear sign thegame plan is to pass the ball and win on the arm of Josh Allen. It was a defensive struggle with both teams making key stops. The Bills change in punters has come back to haunt them as current punter Matt Haack had a critical punt blocked in the fourth quarter The Bills did not want to pay Corey Bojorquez, who was one of the leagues top punters last season. He’s now punting for the LA Rams, who cut their current punter for the more accomplished Bojorquez. You must keep in mind winning and losing in the NFL is a fine line. I don’t expect Bills QB Josh Allen to put up the same numbers as last season due to no crowds being in stadiums for most of the season and you could hear the defensive signals, which allowed the offense to make last second adjustments that resulted in big plays for the offense. Allen is not as bad as we saw against the Steelers but somewhere in between as we will know after the next 16 games are completed. Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll must go to a physical running attack along with getting explosive back Matt Breida the ball in space. Daboll needs more draw plays along with screen passes and isolating him on a linebacker could remedy the situation. Keep in mind that Josh Allen is not good at throwing screen passes or the short dump off passes in the flat. That's something he has to get better at if he's really going to be a top quarterback in the NFL. He is now about to be paid next season as a top QB, and he needs to continue to grind to reach this level. The Bills offensive line has always been a problem and this season is no different. Dion Dawkins had COVID – 19 and was hospitalized for four days and he said he thought he might not make it. We are learning that
does not have endurance, as he gets tired quickly and should have been splitting time with Spencer Brown against the Steelers. I would bring veteran offensive lineman Jamil Douglas from the practice squad to split time with Dawkins until he regains more of his strength and stamina. Bills linemen Jon Feliciano and Daryl Williams got beat down by a ferocious Steeler defensive front. Did anyone think that a healthy Steeler team led by Head Coach Mike Tomlin would not give the Bills a tough game? It was first time the Steelers were healthy against the Bills in their last three meetings. Bills offensive line Coach Bobby Johnson must get to work in order to build back up his line for the upcoming game at Miami next Sunday. The Bills defensive unit played well enough to win but could not hold up to the constant pressure from the Steeler’s offense. I was glad to see Defensive Tackle Ed Oliver being moved around in order to take advantage of his quick feet, which allowed him to put pressure on Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger. Big Ben looked really slow in the first half but in the second half he got rid of the ball quicker, especially on wide receiver screen plays that eventually wore down the Bills defensive unit. Keeping Jerry Hughes and Mario Addison was another bad personnel move by Brandon Beane and Sean McDermott. They should turn over the edge rushing duties to A.J. Epenesa, Efe Obada, Greg Rousseau and Boogie Basham. There’s no doubt nobody beats “Father Time.” You must know when to move a player before they get too old. That’s what the New England Patriots Head Coach/General Manager Bill Belichick is good at - moving his players while they still have some value and replacing them with younger talent. Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin commented on Aquinas Grad and Rochester native Jamir Jones: “That’s probably one of the core reasons why he’s on the 53

– man roster, he was highly productive in the pre-season in the special teams game. He’s got upside as an outside linebacker, but he’s still developing in those areas like a lot of young people. Meanwhile, he needs to be a core contributor in the special teams’ units. And I know he’s working hard day to day to be that.” Another Rochester native, Arizona edge rusher Cardinal Chandler Jones, made history with 5 sacks and two forced fumbles becoming the third player in NFL History since 1982 with at least three games of at least 4 sacks, joining Derrick Thomas, Reggie White, and Leslie O’ Neal. Congratulations to our Rochester natives Jamir Jones and Chandler Jones. Prediction: I see Bills getting back on track next week by squishing (Miami) the fish 31 – 21.
