A

ndrew Young, close friend and associate of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and a leader in the Civil Rights movement, will be the keynote speaker for the 2016 Expressions of King’s Legacy Celebration at Rochester Institute of Technology. The event takes place from noon to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 28 in RIT’s Gordon Field House and Activity Center. It is free and open to campus participants and the general public. Tickets are required and can be obtained online. “Andrew Young and Dr. King represent an important historical bridge between the earliest Civil Rights trials and triumphs, and today’s progress and challenges,” said Kevin McDonald, RIT’s vice president and associate provost for Diversity and Inclusion. “They represent trailblazers whose tireless sacrifices and relentless dedication have resulted in justice, equality, opportunity and freedom.” Young had aligned with King in the important areas of education, literacy and leadership, and these attributes weaved their way throughout his long and notable career in politics, diplomacy and activism. A graduate of Howard University in Washington, D.C. and Hartford Theological Seminary in Connecticut, Young was instrumental in organizing voter registration processes and policies to include men and women of color. His work alongside King in writing the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 remains influential, landmark legislation today. In 1972, Young was the first African American since Reconstruction to be elected to Congress from Georgia when he won the state’s Fifth District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. He was elected to two terms before being appointed by President Jimmy Carter as ambassador to the United Nations, where he would, like King, advocate for human rights, at home and abroad.

AREA BRIEFS Father’s Empowerment – Handling Baby’s Mama Drama In Family Court

THANK YOU BILL! The artwork that graces this week’s cover was produced by renowned artist William “Bill” Cooper of Buffalo. The limited edition rendering of Dr. King was done in commemoration of the inaugural celebration marking January 20, 1986 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day – a national holiday! A heartfelt thank you Bill!

Legislature Approves Resolution to Support the Safe Staffing for Quality Care Act Last month the Erie County Legislature joined the growing number of municipalities which support a bill currently before the NYS Legislature aimed at setting nurse-topatient staffing ratios across New York State. The resolution to support the Safe Staffing for Quality Care Act was approved with bi-partisan support and ensures that health care workers have the support of the Erie County Legislature in their fight to ensure safe working conditions. The resolution was introduced by Legislator Barbara Miller-Williams (D-Buffalo) who saw this as an important issue that Erie County should support. “My goal is to ensure that all patients in acute care facilities and nursing homes receive the best care and treatment available. I commend my colleagues for joining me in support of this important resolution to ensure that quality, patient centered care remains a priority throughout Erie County.”

The community is invited to join Fellowship World and Attorney Nicholas W. Hicks for a forum on “Father’s Empowerment: Handling Baby’s Mama Drama in the Family Court” on Saturday, January 16 at 10:00 am for a candid discussion that will dispel the myths and empower you with the facts, so you can become the responsible father you desire to be. Fellowship Word located at 878 Humboldt Parkway at E. Utica. Men are increasingly becoming angry at the perception of losing their kids in divorce or family court. Many men believe that their dream of raising their child will be reduced to a child support payment and every other weekend. But is this actually true? “There’s a real perception— even women share it—that courts are unfair to fathers. Did you know that the percentage of cases in which the mother got sole custody dropped from 60.4 to 45.7 percent while the percentage of equal shared custody cases, in just that decade, doubled from 15.8 to 30.5. And a recent survey by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers shows a rapid increase in mothers paying child support. Attorney Hicks has been serving New York for nearly two decades and has served thousands of people just like you. Attorney Hicks is a member of a number of exceptional boards, organizations and associations, including the New York State Bar Association and Bar Association of Erie County. Fellowship World is a center and community for spiritual growth where positive attitudes are developed and where good people become better. John H. Massive Protest Rally Planned for Dr. Martin Luther King’s Birthday, Jan. 15th Charley H. Fisher, lll, President of B.U.I.L.D. Inc., has called for a major demonstration and Protest Rally for the actual birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King on January 1 5 t h . T h e Rally is scheduled for Betty Jean F r i d a y, GRANT Jan. 15th at 10:30 a.m. at the corner of Main & Carlton Street, in Buffalo “It is no coincidence that we chose Dr. King’s birthday as it is no coincidence that the organizers chose the corner of Main & Carlton Street,” said Mr. Fisher. Charley Fisher went on to say, “As we all know, the late, Dr. King was moving toward an economic

development agenda that transcended race and ethnicity. He was looking to help the poor citizens of the south and southwest as well as the northern cities that were overrun with poverty and high unemployment among the Blacks as well as the White citizens. Many believe his movement away from social issues and his interests in the well being of people from all background increased his threat among those who sought to keep the races divided.” Main and Carlton Street is not far from the sites where many state funded projects are being constructed, such as the new UB Medical School, Children’s Hospital, High Point Nursing Home, Roswell Park Cancer Institute and many commercial and residential parking ramps. However, when one looks at the actual construction workers who are constructing these and other buildings, they are

ne in four cowboys was Black, despite the stories told in popular books and movies. In fact, it’s believed that the real “Lone Ranger” was inspired by an African American man named Bass Reeves. Reeves had been born a slave but escaped West during the Civil War where he lived in what was then known as Indian Territory. He eventually became a Deputy U.S. Marshal, was a master of disguise, an expert marksman, had a Native American companion, and rode a silver horse. His story was not unique however. In the 19th century, the Wild West drew enslaved Blacks with the hope of freedom and wages. When the Civil War ended, freedmen came West with the hope of a better life where the demand for skilled labor was high. These African Americans made up at least a quarter of the legendary cowboys who lived dangerous lives facing weather, rattlesnakes, and outlaws while they slept under the stars driving cattle herds to market. While there was little formal segregation in frontier towns and a great deal of personal freedom, Black cowboys were often expected to do more of the work and the roughest jobs compared to their white counterparts. Loyalty did develop between the cowboys on a drive, but the Black cowboys were typically responsible for breaking the horses and being the first ones to cross flooded streams during cattle drives. In fact, it is believed that the term “cowboy” originated as a derogatory term used to describe Black “cowhands.”(Pictured:

B. Barbara Echols, Beloved Healer, Author, Makes Her Transition

F

or B. Barbara Echols, it really was no mystery. The former Buffalo-based certified Traditional Naturopath and author knew well that nature’s produce, in the form of food and herbs, coupled with the Word of God and the life giving realities it communicates about the vastness of the human body, was by far the most effective medicine. That was the message in her book, “Behold, I Tell You A Mystery: A Guide to Abundant Life Through Its Elements,” and in her teachings and care of countless local clients. Barbara left Buffalo several years ago and relocated to Houston,Texas where she lived with her son and continued her work until the time of her passing on Tuesday, December 15, 2015. In addition to individual consultations and seminar teachings over the past 15 plus years, she wrote articles concerning natural health in Challenger News, and in a local Western New York journal. She also shared her knowledge to the community on a weekly radio broadcast through which she provided natural health information to her listening audience. She held a bachelor’s degree in Exceptional Education for the Mentally Retarded Child from SUNY at Buffalo, and taught professionally in the public schools. She also held several positions with the NY State Department of Labor and the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, over a 28 year time frame. Her most fulfilling career, however, began when she discovered the art of natural healing.

The Day Dr. King Visited Buffalo

My Son Was Murdered!

Several months before he was assassinated, Dr. Martin Luther King visited Buffalo on November 9, 1967 at the invitation of the Student Association at UB. He spoke at Kleinhans Music Hall to a full house, and as former Council President George K. Arthur recalls, few African Americans were in attendance. In fact it was only he and several others, including former Deputy Speaker Arthur O. Eve, Horace Billy Johnson, Police Captain Marian Bass, and Police Captain Floyd Edwards, who met with him. The late Garfield Hinton, the Challenger’s brilliant Senior Editor at the time, was also part of that group, and covered the historic event. Following are excerpts from Mr. Hinton’s 1967 report. By GARFIELD HINTON

Linda Cray Maclin Randle

ED. NOTE: The recently released statistics citing Buffalo’s homicide rate having dropped 35 percent, brought little comfort to the loved ones of those lost in senseless murders on the streets of Buffalo. Linda Cray Maclin Randle, a mother, grandmother and entrepreneur, lost her only son, Myron Mykoll Maclin, to senseless violence in September of 2014. His killer, a troubled 23-yearold young man, was sentenced in December. As she and her family seek closure and peace, she has thoughts of what she might be able to do as an individual to help others and bring an end to some of the violence. A specialized cosmetologist by trade, she is considering offering not only hair cuts – but encouragement – to young men and women. Her letter, which she said she hopes will bring some awareness to others, follows:

I

O

Myron Mykoll Maclin June 21, 1974 - September 4, 2014 n September 4th 2014 my son Myron Mykoll Maclin, was murdered!!! I lost my son - my one and only child. Yes Myron was killed - murdered Violently on Main street in Buffalo New York. This unexpected tragedy has left a void in my heart and I know I must be his voice to speak out and bring on other voices of parents and families that are dealing the same type of tragedy in their lives. We must pull together to stop the murders and killing in our communities, throughout the county and the world. We Must Shout It out! STOP THE MURDERS, THE VIOLENCE AND THE KILLING!!! Myron leaves behind two little children, his family and friends that loved him. We will miss him deeply. Myron, like many others, was so much more than just another Linda and son Myron. statistic. Certified in culinary arts and barbering, he loved to cook and was very talented and passionate about cutting mens hair. He had a big heart. Myron often cut hair for sheltered men to lift their sprits as well as his friends and regular clients. On August 8th 2014 he was picked up by his aunt and spent the day at the family reunion with his dad, grandmother, aunts uncles and cousins. The following day he went by his aunt and uncle’s house to paint their fence. Myron and I spoke before and after, and he was so excited and happy because he was pulling things together to move into his new place. We were all sending house warming gifts: his aunt had large bags of groceries, there was a new sofa and dinette set from us and everyone was very happy for him. Myron and I did not speak on that Wednesday. And then I get the worse telephone call in my life. “MYRON IS DEAD!” OH MY GOD! To find out that he was killed, murdered, that was unreal; the pain almost too much to bear. Please!!!The murders and killings must stop! (Linda, who is based in Chicago,, is the sister of renowned sculptress/artist Valeria Cray and retired police officer Patrick A. Cray.)

City Continues to Ignore The Value of The Buffalo Special Police Dear Editor: Mayor Brown, Common Council and Buffalo Police PBA, please read this. As all of you speak of Public Safety this past week, you continue to ignore an asset provided to you in the City Charter. Your auxiliary police, the Buffalo Special Police. This well trained, all volunteer organization has augmented or assisted the Buffalo Police Department since 1972. For some reason the Buffalo Police Union sees the unit as a threat, why? The Common Council blames the Mayor and the Mayor blames the Union, for not utilizing the BSP. Isn’t this what Donald Trump has been talking about, “ Stupid Leaders”? Council President Pridgen, does support the idea of deployment of the Buffalo Special Police. Most cities have Auxiliary Police, Reserve officers or Special Police and utilize them for street patrol, special events, crowd and traffic control. These units pose no threat to hiring or reduction of the Police Force; or overtime for Police Officers. With crime and terrorist threats on the rise, would this not be an inexpensive and sensible thing to do? An extra set of eyes from a well-trained Special Police Officer can only make the public safer and the public feel safe. To The Mayor, Common Council and Buffalo Police PBA, get over your petty, differences and do the “smart” thing and utilize the Buffalo Special Police. Dennis R. Brennan Chief of Police ( retired)

n a special press conference Thursday evening at Kleinhans Music Hall, following his major address, Dr. Martin Luther King called the ballot one of the keys to the door of freedom. A vote-less people is a powerless people, he added. Dr. King called not just for desegregated schools but also for integrated quality education. Dr. King disavowed any personal interest in running for the presidency, and expressed no hope that a third party candidate could win a national election. He did say however, that a peace candidate who gives voters an alternative could win the election. Referring to Negro servicemen in Vietnam, Dr. King noted that Negroes are 11% of the American population; 24% of the Vietnam and almost 50% of the combat troops there. On proposed cuts in the antipoverty program Dr. King commented that it is too bad that Congress at this time is playing with poor and engaging in a kind 1967 VISIT: Pictured (L-R) Dr. King’s assistant Rev. Bernard Lee, traveled with him; then Board of Supervisors Member George of political guerilla warfare thus who K. Arthur, Police Captain Marian Bass, Dr. King, then Council Meminviting social disaster. Dr. King ber Horace Billy Johnson, and Assemblyman Arthur O. Eve. said also that to put 275,000 young people in Headstart Programs; 250,000 in Neighborhood Job Corps programs; 90,000 in other anti-poverty programs out in the street will be an invitation not only to summer riots but to winter riots as well. Dr. King said that the election of Carl Stokes as Mayor of Cleveland and Richard Hatcher as Mayor of Gary will give the Negro new hope in his struggle to become a first class citizen. Earlier addressing a near capacity audience on “ The Future of Integration” Dr. King, neatly attired in a blue suit and tie, white shirt and black shoes, began by briefly outlining highpoints in the history of the Negro in America… Summer riots are caused by winters of delay, Dr. King observed, continuing, Negroes did not create slavery, slums, unemployment. Then Dr. King explained why the Negro’s struggle today is more difficult than it was 3 or 4 years ago. “ It is one thing to take the whip from Bull Connors or Jim Clark but it is another thing to say to a man that he should not be poverty stricken or that he should have quality education or that he should be able to live next door to you. A lot of people were outraged by the way we were treated. They were against segregation and brutality but not for genuine equality for the black man.” “It is easier to integrate lunch counters than to eradicate slums. It is easier to guarantee the right vote than an annual income. We are in a period that is going to cost the nation something.” Dr. King specifically suggested $20 billion a year for the next 2 years. The loudest applause of the evening came when Dr. King said that America is more concerned with winning, what I consider, an ill considered and unjust war in Vietnam than in winning the war against poverty at home. He contrasted an expenditure of $500,000 to kill an enemy soldier in Vietnam with $53.00 a year in the so called war against poverty. Dr. King bemoaned the fact that Negro soldiers fight in Vietnam only to return home to various types of discrimination. That is why many Negro servicemen re-enlist, he explained. Explaining his views on Vietnam, Dr. King stated: “There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, politic nor popular, but he must take it because conscience tells him it is right.” Winding up his powerful address, spoken without notes, Dr. King concluded: “If the inexpressible cruelties of slavery couldn’t stop us, the opposition we now face including the so-called White backlash will surely fail. We are going to win our freedom because both the sacred heritage of our nation and the eternal will of the Dr. King (left), George Arthur, Almighty God are embodied in our echoing demands and so I can and Garfield Hinton. still say ‘We Shall Overcome!’ ”
