PROTESTS CONTINUE: Legislator Betty Jean Grant was one of several speakers who turned out to call for the removal of School Board member and area businessman Carl Paladino from the Board of Education following insulting and racist comments about President Barack Obama and first lady Michele Obama. Rev. George F. Nicholas of the Concerned Clergy Coalition, also spoke at the rally and prayer vigil which was attended by over 200 people. Rev. Nicholas said that those who are not “standing with us” do not deserve the community’s support in the future. On Wednesday, Jan. 18, board member Sharon BeltonCottman will present a second resolution at a 5:30 p.m. School Board Meeting at City Hall, calling for Mr. Paladino’s removal. THIRD EYE PHOTO

Big City Schools’ Group Pushes for Ouster of Paladino From Buffalo Board In an unusual move, the national organization group that represents urban school boards and their superintendents is asking New York state officials to remove Carl Paladino from the Buffalo, N.Y.,school board. The Washington-based Council of the Great City Schools is the latest in a line of people and groups to seek Paladino’s ouster in response to derogatory comments he made about President Obama, first lady Michelle Obama, and Valerie Jarrett, the president’s long-time adviser. A spokesman for the Council said he believed it was the first time in 40 years—and possibly in the organization’s 50-year history—that it had publicly called for the removal of a school board member or superintendent in one of its districts. But the Council’s strongly-worded statement drew the same defiant response from Paladino as the others. He told Education Week on Friday that he will fight any attempt to oust him. “Hell, no,” he said when asked if he plans to quit. The calls for Paladino’s resignation ignited more than two weeks ago when a survey he filled out for a local Buffalo publication, the Artvoice, was published. In his response to questions about what he’d like to see happen in 2017 and who he’d like to see go away, Paladino told the publication that he’d like for President Obama to catch mad cow disease and die and for Mrs. Obama to “return to being a male and let loose” in Zimbabwe to live with a gorilla. The comments were widely condemned as racist and calls for his ouster began almost immediately. His comments were also denounced by a spokesperson for President-elect Trump, for whose campaign Paladino served as New York co-chair. The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund wrote to New York state Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia asking that Paladino be removed. The Buffalo school board approved a resolution by a 6-2 vote in December condemning Paladino’s comments and giving him 24 hours to resign before starting the process to remove him. The New York state education commissioner can remove a school board member for neglect of duty or willful misconduct, but a formal application seeking removal must be submitted to the commissioner within 30 days of the action that led to the complaint, according to state law. In his statement condemning the remarks, Michael Casserly, the executive director of the Council of the Great City Schools, said Paladino’s comments showed “a craven disregard for the dignity of the first family, and the ugly and racist nature of his statements reflects poorly on all of us in public education.” “Regardless of whether they were spoken in the conduct of his duties as a public official, Mr. Paladino’s loathsome words set an example of intolerance for all the students that we are charged with teaching and guiding,” the statement continued. “There is simply no place in our public dialogue for an elected school board member to spew such hatred.”

The African Influence on Picasso’s Work During the early 1900s, the aesthetics of traditional African sculpture became a powerful influence among European artists who formed an avant-garde in the development of modern art. In France, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, and their School of Paris friends blended the highly stylized treatment of the human figure in African sculptures with painting styles derived from the postImpressionist works of Edouard Manet, Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin. While these artists knew nothing of the original meaning and function of the West and Central African sculptures they encountered, they instantly recognized the spiritual aspect of the composition and adapted these qualities to their own efforts to move beyond the naturalism that had defined Western art since the Renaissance. Picasso’s African Period, which lasted from 1906 to 1909, was the period when Pablo Picasso painted in a style which was strongly influenced by African sculpture and particularly traditional African masks. This protoCubist period following Picasso’s Blue Period and Rose Period has also been called the Negro Period, or Black Period. The work that become one of the cornerstones of his fame is known as Les Demoiselles d’Avignon. In this Continued Page 9

JOB WELL DONE! Historic Presidency of Barak Obama, America’s first African American President, ends January 20.

D

espite incredible opposition, President Obama has emerged as one of the most consequential and successful presidents in America. In addition to inheriting a nation in the worse financial free fall/crisis since the Great Depression, two overseas wars, civil unrest, a rash of mass shootings, and changing cultural demographics. He faced die-hard, racist Republican opposition from day one from men who plotted a path of unified opposition to his every proposal. The door was closed to Republican cooperation, but that did not stop him from forging ahead to try heal this nation. Barack Obama holds the dubious distinction of being the most disrespected president in history; he and his family over the last 8 years, the victims of unprecedented bigotry and unwarranted personal attacks. Blame it on the color of their skin. Yet through it all, Barack Obama maintained his “cool,” as did his beautiful wife Michele and his amazing daughters Malia and Sasha. Add to that, according to the Washington Post, Obama has served longer than any president in decades without a scandal. Barack and Michelle Obama brought grace, style, intelligence and more to the White House. And in the wake of their departure, President Obama leaves a legacy to be proud of. We wish the Obama’s Godspeed and look forward to the role they will play nationally and globally as “Citizen and Mrs. Obama” in the coming years. Job Well Done!

President Obama’s Accomplishments Speak For Themselves...

Besides being the only president to issue reform on same sex marriage, create the affordable healthcare act forbidding insurance agencies to deny people because of age or condition, and reduce the unemployment rate to the lowest its been in over 11 years, gas prices are at an all time low.In 2016, President Obama has made history again. To date, he has granted 562 commutations: more commutations than the previous nine presidents combined and more commutations than any individual president in nearly a century Here’s a list by writer Todd Perry, of some of things that the 44th President of the United States has accomplished during his tenure: 1.Passed Health Care Reform: After five presidents over a century failed to create universal health insurance, signed the Affordable Care Act (2010). It will cover 32 million uninsured Americans beginning in 2014 and mandates a suite of experimental measures to cut health care cost growth, the number one cause of America’s long-term fiscal problems. 2. Passed the Stimulus: Signed $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act in 2009 to spur economic growth amid greatest recession since the Great Depression. Weeks after stimulus went into effect, unemployment claims began to subside. Twelve months later, the private sector began producing more jobs than it was losing, and it has continued to do so for twenty-three straight months, creating a total of nearly 3.7 million new private-sector jobs. 3. Passed Wall Street Reform: Signed the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act (2010) to re-regulate the financial sector after its practices caused the Great Recession. 4. Ended the War in Iraq: Ordered all U.S. military forces out of the country. Last troops left on December 18, 2011. 5. Drawdown of War in Afghanistan: From a peak of 101,000 troops in June 2011, U.S. forces are now down to 30,000. 6. Eliminated Osama bin laden: In 2011, ordered special forces raid of secret compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, in which the terrorist leader was killed and a trove of al-Qaeda documents was discovered. 7. Turned Around U.S. Auto Industry: In 2009, injected $62 billion in federal money (on top of $13.4 billion in loans from the Bush administration) into ailing GM and Chrysler in return for equity stakes and agreements for massive restructuring. Since bottoming out in 2009, the auto industry has added more than 100,000 jobs. In 2011, the Big Three automakers all gained market share for the first time in two decades. 8. Saved the U.S. auto industry 9. Helped put the U.S. on track for energy independence by 2020 10. Began the drawdown of troops in Afghanistan 11. Signed the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals allowing as many as 5 million people living in the U.S. illegally to avoid deportation and receive work permits 12. “To Everything There is a Season”:

Winter Foods Benefit Kidneys Adrenal Glands, Bladder and Bones

W

inter solstice is the first day of winter, occurring December 21 in the northern hemisphere, when the sun rises the latest and sets the earliest, giving us the shortest day and the longest night of the year. This is a time for us to go deeply within, to bring light to the dark places. Winter is the most yin season, a time for storing and conserving energy – to slow down, rejuvenate, rest, nourish our inner life, restore our foundation, and deepen our roots – within ourselves within our family and within our spiritual community and faith. In our bodies, the organs, glands and tissues associated with the winter period are the kidneys, adrenal glands, bladder, and bones. In traditional Chinese medicine, the kidneys are thought of as the root of the body’s energy. Winter Foods Use the following foods to support your kidneys, bladder, adrenal glands and bones during the winter months. Liquid Foods: Drink warming herbal teas with ginger, nettle, fennel seeds, licorice root, and cinnamon in the winter, and use an abundance of vegetable and bean soups to promote kidney cleansing. Salty Foods: A little salt is beneficial to the kidneys and adrenal glands, while too much can cause tightness in the kidneys and bladder. Use miso, seaweeds, sea salt, millet, and barley. Bitter Foods: A small quantity of bitter foods nourishes the heart, which may also be stressed winter. City-Wide King Celebration Answers the Question to Event’s Theme, “Where Do We Go From Here?”

T

he annual Martin Luther King Celebration in Kleinhans Music Hall last Sunday evening was not only an awesome display of local talent, but an important and timely reminder of Dr. King’s legacy of faith and struggle in his quest to end racism and injustice; a legacy that should compel us to continue do the work necessary until the job is complete. Dr. Erika D. Gault, a remarkable young woman of clarity and vision, delivered a short, but powerful message. Like Dr. King, we must develop the capacity to “criticize and energize” she said. King, she pointed out, called critical attention to man’s inhumanity to man; to racial hatred, bigotry and White supremacy. He refused to accept these realities, took action against them and with the vision of God’s Kingdom, energized African Americans as well as all people of good will to take a stand. As she listed a litany of current injustices both locally and nationally, from the denigration of President and Mrs. Obama by local businessman and school board member Carl Paladino, to the unjust killing of unarmed Black men nationwide , she said we are obligated to continue King’s work for the liberation of our people and ultimately the salvation of the country. DR. GAULT “You can’t say you can’t find work to do!” she said. What would Dr. King say to us today, she asked rhetorically? Basically to keep the faith because God is still in charge and all is not lost. Quoting Dr. King she continued: “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” In the end, she assured, the Kingdom of God will win, but we will have to go to work until that day comes . Channeling the spirit of King she declared, “There will be justice in the White House and justice in the street!” She received a standing ovation. Dr. Gault, assistant professor of history and religion at Hilbert College, is organizing a youth symposium and poetry slam February 11 in the Johnston Theatre at Elmwood Franklin School. For more information go online to njoziensemble.com The commemoration has been coordinated for the past 11 years under the dedicated guidance of Bessie Patterson. Youth were prominent in the program which included amazing performances by Angel Vox, the Olmsted High School Band, Torri Young, Miss Barbara’s School of Dance, the Friendship Praise Dance Ministry, the Buffalo Academy for the Visual & Performing Arts Choir, and the African American Cultural Center Dancers. The Recognition of Students portion of the show evolved into an auditorium-wide youth tribute with Mrs. Patterson issuing a timely message to young people and personally inviting all the youth in the audience on stage. Also, performing was Melody Rhodes, Kiesha Adamczyk-Bennett, the Buffalo Usher’s Association and Atlanta-based comedian Willie Brown & Woody. Serving with Mrs. Patterson as co-hosts and presenters were W/C Brandy, Dr. James Lewis III, Evangelist Anita Williams and Elder Craig Pridgen. A host of elected officials and dignitaries were in attendance and recognized including newly elected District Attorney John Flynn , State Senator Timothy Kennedy and Mayor Byron Brown who delivered brief remarks. Seven outstanding citizens – Edna Gayles-Kee, Luz Milagros Ramos, Pastor Richard Stenhouse, Rafael Suarez, Jennifer Whitaker, Pastor James Giles and Sandy White - were the well deserving 2017 honorees. –a.b.

Mayweather Confirms He Will Attend Trump Inauguration

S

MAYWEATHER

ince they are longtime buds, Floyd Mayweather Jr. says he will be front and center at Donald Trump‘s inauguration ceremony.TMZ caught up with Mayweather in New York City and asked about his time spent with the President-elect during a closed-door meeting in December. But before the photo guy could even finish getting the words “D.C.” out of his mouth, Mayweather excitedly volunteered that he would by in D.C. for the inauguration. “Am I going to go to D.C.? Yea, y’all will see me in D.C. Ya’ll will see me in D.C. looking good. All Black affair. Bow tie? Or regular tie?” said Floyd. Before addressing the topic of Trump’s swearing in, Mayweather gave a shout out to President Obama. He urged Americans to grant Trump the benefit of the doubt and hope for the best. “Barack Obama was a good president and hopefully, Donald Trump is a good president.” “We don’t know what can happen in life. Only thing we can do is keep our fingers crossed, pray and hope for the best.” According to The Money Team boss, Trump has been nothing but supportive of him in the past.

Solange, Questlove, Sheila E. To Discuss Prince At Yale Yale University has rounded up several prominent artists and musicians for its upcoming four-day conference on the influence and legacy of music icons Prince and David Bowie. Titled “Blackstar Rising & the Purple Reign,” the seminar is a multi-day symposium that will “explore the careers of two singular musicians who changed the face of popular music culture in the second half of the 20th century,” states a website for the event. The conference will kick off on Wednesday, Jan. 25, with Questlove and Kimbra hosting a “critical deejay” discussion of favorite Prince and Bowie tracks. On Thursday, Jan. 26, Bowie’s 1973 concert film “Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars” will be screened followed by a Q&A. Later that night, Solange and curator/conference organizer Daphne A. Brooks will have a keynote discussion at the round-table discussion “Everybody Still Wants To Fly: Activism from Prince to Solange.” p.m.). On Friday, Jan. 27, percus-

PICASSO continued work, he began to incorporate African influences into his

work. Before Picasso started his Black Period he came into the possession of some ancient Iberian sculptures that he got from an acquaintance who had stolen them from the Louvre museum in Paris. In Les Demoiselles d’Avignonthe faces of the three women on the left are based on the Iberian sculptures. Picasso based the faces of the two women on the right on the African totem art, that he had also collected. Throughout Picasso’s career, periods would be concluded by a major artwork that contained all the new things he had learned. Later in his life, Picasso would deny he had been inspired by African art, while making the painting the Demoiselles but there seems to be ample evidence that he was familiar with, and was already collecting African art while making the Demoiselles.

sionist Sheila E. and saxophonist Donny McCaslin will participate in a roundtable conversation about artistic collaboration . On Saturday, Jan. 28, TV On The Radio will perform for free. Additionally, other conference sessions will cover “funk and the 1970s,” “the art of collaboration,” “sonic experimentalism,” and more, according to Revolt.

Humanity, Which Way, Buffalo?

D

Michael Hill

uring the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election, a cultural war emerged with the battle line drawn by white supremacist organizations, led by Donald Trump. The Alt Right “movement” of supremacists and Trump supporters line up on the side of identity politics. While People of Color, Muslims, Mexicans, and LGBT and anyone organizing, advocating or fighting for freedom, truth and justice are the enemies of supremacists. The cultural conflict, a war of a psychological nature, echoes from European colonization, enslavement of Africans, genocide against Native people and southern white supremacy violence of the post-reconstruction era. Education is the battle field in the cultural war occurring in Buffalo N.Y. The battle engages the Buffalo Public Schools, New York State Education Department, City Hall and the hearts and minds of adults and children. The request by the Buffalo Board of Education, to the State Education Commissioner, for the removal of Carl Paladino from the Board is a response to the offensive and harmful aggression of the white male supremacy mentality. Mr. Paladino’s harmful and abusive statements, were reported nationally and internationally. A Trump advisor and New York State Republican Party leader, Paladino has a history of bullying and intimidating behavior. His 2017 New Year Wishes, published in a local weekly were, death by mad cow disease for President Obama; and a degrading, dehumanizing characterization of Michelle Obama going back to live with gorillas. Beyond perpetuating a lie of the First Lady being a transgender man, he projects the slavery justifying sub-human African monkey stereotype found in racist, KKK and American Nazi publications. His statement negates his role as a public official, and education leader. It brings into explosive view a conflict in human values within Mr. Paladino and within the Buffalo community. The published statement put the citizens of Buffalo, the city government, Board of Education, State Education Department, and the Mayor front and center to demonstrate leadership and the true character of our humanity. As a public official, representing citizens in one of nine districts of the Buffalo Public Schools; Mr. Paladino has demonstrated a moral, educational and professional incompetence. By his conduct, Paladino demonstrated a purposeful intent to make public display of depraved ideas that would warrant a teacher’s removal from the classroom or principal from management of a school. The recent City Hall demonstration, a mobilization of women for the protection of our children and the wellbeing of the co munity is the frontline of organizing people of good conscious to confront and remove a white supremacist bully from the Buffalo Board of Education. The question remains, will the school yard bully be held accountable for his actions? The Mayor calling the demonstration “a side show”, reminds me of a lesson from the School of Common Sense, that Brother Simba (MHRIP) often spoke – “our greatest affliction is our contradiction”. In that regard, the Mayor is a “no show on leadership”. His statement that Paladino should resign offers nothing since Paladino has chosen not to. There’s no free lunch and there’s no free speech. Everyone is accountable for the effect of their behavior. Speech is behavior. Mr. Paladino has spoken freely. He has taken responsibility, but refuses to be accountable for the harm he has done. One cannot yell fire in a dark theater full of patrons, or verbally incite violence against others, or slander

“We wish to plead our own cause. Too long have others spoken for us.” - John Russwurm, Freedom’s Journal. 1827 America’s 1st Black Newspaper

people with impunity. First Amendment protection, does not permit harm, intent to cause harm, nor supersede professional standards, ethics, policies and regulations intended to protect children and the public interest. The idea that Paladino’s statements are free speech, and his removal from the Board would be an unconstitutional infringement of his rights, is a superficial interpretation of the 1st Amendment. Determining Paladino’s failure to meet professional, moral and ethical responsibility and standards is the basis for removal. A teacher is not expected to stand by while one student verbally attacks another. They are expected to recognize and immediately handle the harm being done and nip in the bud the potential for greater bullying, greater harm. It is a professional standard of performance, a moral and ethical obligation. If a teacher, had made the same statement as Paladino, most parents I know would immediately demand the removal of the teacher. Many would immediately remove The demand for Paladino’s removal is a demand for justice based on his intentional and purposeful statements which he knew were disrespectful, hurtful, and would offend African Americans specifically, provoke hostility, inflame emotions, and racial discord. He has engaged in a pattern of bullying and intimidation of Board Members, Interim Superintendent, Board Staff and others. Mr. Paladino knew that his racist “Wish List” would have the effect of destabilizing and undermining the capacity of the Board to effectively operate. As a public servant he has failed to meet the professional standards and fulfill the duty of an education leader. I’m sure after his removal, Paladino will continue to speak freely.

Are You The Angel Lady Who Returned My Lost Purse? Dear Editor I am writing this letter to find and recognize the unnamed angel who helped me on the night of October 31, 2016 near the Humboldt Inn. When I parked my car on Humboldt Parkway somehow, I dropped my ID and purse without noticing it. Shortly after I went into the Inn, an unknown angel came in. She had picked them up and had the presence of mind to come in and ask who owned the id and. I was overjoyed and overwhelmed by her act of decency and kindness. Everything was returned intact with nothing missing. That is a rare quality today in people to reach back and return what belongs to another. She left so quickly I didn’t get her name and I am asking that you print this letter in hopes of finding her. It would mean a great deal to find my angel in disguise. God has been urging me to find this angel lady to thank her for her kindness. Thank you in advance Deborah Cathcart-Burnett

Calling all East High School Alumni To Action! On August 5, 2017 The Class of 1967 in partnership with Principal Darryl King is proud to announce the creation of the East High Alumni Association. The association will be made up of anyone who “attended or graduated” from what is now known as East Community High School. You have 2 action items: (1) share this article with your contacts and (2) send your contact info to one of the individuals below. We will work with the principals and their respective staff to raise revenues in support of programs that will improve the educational & economic outcomes of the current and future students. The programs will include mentorship, Science, Technology, Engineering, Entrepreneurship, Math (STEEM) activities and life cycle planning. The challenges that the young people face today are much more challenging than what most of us faced in our formative years. In order for young people and their parents to successfully compete in today’s global society, their in school education must be complimented by an Alumni Association with members of all ages to freely use their time, talent and treasury to give back to future generations of young people. We are very much focused on building a database of people who have attended East that are willing to provide a much needed support system for the students and faculty. Over the years we have heard of teachers that have reached into their own pockets to buy supplies for their classes. We now want to create a pocket of resources as a thank you for all of the knowledge teachers selflessly shared with us during our time together. The Bible teaches and we learned that without vision the people perish and we strongly believe our involvement with the kids and their families will dramatically change the trajectory of their dreams. We want to create a mindset that has students prepared to create companies not merely work at a one. Obtaining a good educational foundation will give them something to look forward to as they prepare for a future that will produce better economical outcomes for them and their families. Our primary message to them is “What ever you are dreaming … dream bigger”! The association will be formally launched on August 4-6, 2017 at our reunion’s weekend. All are welcome so save the date additional information will follow. We would like to get contact with as many Alums as possible so we can properly plan our activities. For additional information send your contact information (Name, Address, Phone numbers, email address, year you graduated) to: David E. Get off Bills General Manager Doug Whaley’s Back!!!

The Western New York media continues to ride Buffalo Bills General Manager Doug Whaley’s back on almost every issue. Mr. Whaley c a m e clean during a recent p r e s s conference and George let everyone RADNEY k n o w he has little power within the organization and still negative stories continue to be written about him along with angry phone calls being made to talk radio pro-

Bills owners Terry and Kim Pegula refused to change administrative structure wherethe Head Coach should answer to the General Manager and not to the owner. The Bills claim they like Doug Whaley but not enough to give him the title of V.P. of Football Operations. Whaley has selected our next Head Coach Sean McDermott from Carolina Panthers. He’s a good selection which will run a 4-3 scheme on defense and depending on his offensive coordinator, can continue to

improve with Tyrod Taylor at QB. Bills head Coach McDermott has hired former Minnesota Vikings head coach and most recently defensive backs coach for Baltimore Ravens Leslie Frazier. Frazer comes from the Tony Dungy coaching tree and has almost 20 years of NFL experience including winning a Super Bowl with the Chicago Bears in 1985. The Bills may end up with another former Head Coach in Brad Childress as offensive coordinator. Childress has worked with Duante Coldpepper and Tarvas Jackson, both QB’s who like to throw on the run and make things happen. If you watched the Packers defeat the Cowboys recently, you may have noticed that Aaron Rodgers throws the ball much better on the run instead of in the pocket. It’s amazing that here in Western New York people have a problem with Tyrod Taylor throwing from outside of the pocket. It’s not a problem, land hopefully the new of-
