NFL Wild Card Weekend: Sloppy Bills Squish the Fish in 34-31 Thriller!
TheBuffalo Bills offensive unit must have seen on film opportunities to beat Dolphin safety deep down field. The Bills attempted at least five deep balls finally connecting with Josh Allen to Stefon Diggs for a 54-yard reception on a third and fifteen. The Bills must establish a running game with Cook and Singletary leading the way.
The Dolphins were hampered by third string QB Skylar Thompson throwing the ball too late and missing wideopen receivers.
Josh Allen was off to a good start and then a bad throw for an interception. The Bills continued to keep the Dolphins in the game and forcing Bills defensive unit to come up with key stops. However, Allen continues to fall into bad habits with his footwork and really seeing the field in critical situations. He was the main reason this football game was so close. Allen had two interceptions along with two fumbles allowing an undermanned Miami Dolphin team to stay in the game. Allen is a hot and cold QB who needs a strong running game to bail him out.
Once again Bills Offensive Coordinator Ken Dorsey and Head Coach Sean McDermott refuse to reel Allen in by using the running game.
Especially once the Bills went up 17-0. James Cook and Devin Singletary had 12 and 10 carries for 39 and 48 rushing yards respectively.
One constant high performer is the Bills defensive front consisting of Ed Oliver, DaQuan Jones, and Tim Settle, Jr. They shut down the Dolphins running game holding them to 42 rushing yards. Bills Defensive Tackle DaQuan Jones said, “We made sure we controlled our gaps and in playoffs you want to make your opponent one dimensional. You must be able to stop the run and we did our part today. We must get back and look at the film and get ready for next week’s opponent. We must take it one game at a time and treat it like it’s a normal game.”
Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver added: “The defense was the key to the game. They played good defense and we played better defense. We’ll watch it, flush it and get ready for our next opponent. It doesn’t matter how you win you just must WIN. That 13 second game we won and then we lost but I’ve been on these rollercoaster rides before. Everything is on the table and we must find a way to move past each opponent.”
Yes, The Bills defensive line has been the unsung heroes of the 2022 Buffalo Bills team and who knows where this squad would be without them.
The Bills next opponent is The Cincinnati Bengals coming to High Mark Stadium with a depleted offensive line that the Bills strong
ADVOCACY DAY FOR DANIEL’S LAW
OnWednesday January 25 advocates from across NY will gather at the State Capitol to fight for the passage of Daniel's Law, a mental health bill in honor of Daniel Prude and all those harmed by police while experiencing mental health crises. Daniel's Law ensures that people facing mental health crises have access to appropriate responses from Mental Health Counselors, Social Workers, EMT's, Peers and Community Health Workers.
defensive front must take advantage of and stop running backs Joe Mixon and Samaje Perrine.
Bengals QB Joe Burrows will rely on a short passing game to his explosive receivers Tee Higgins, Ja’Marr Chase and veteran Tyler Boyd. The Bengals are more potent than the Chiefs currently are and will pose a stiff test for the Bills.
The Bills will be able to run the football with James Cook and Devin Singletary. Both were off to excellent starts in the last games against the Bengals. Josh Allen can’t afford to turn the ball over and play action passing will be the key to this game. Allen’s 14 interceptions were tied for second most in the league and his 5 INTs in red zone lead the league. The Bills are winning in spite of Josh Allen’s turnovers right now, but we need a turnover free game against the Bengals.
I see another very exciting game on Sunday at 3p.m. in High Mark Stadium with Bills defense causing Cincinnati QB Joe Burrow to rush his throws allowing secondary to intercept him in key situations, and an Allen to Diggs combination will pay off huge dividends leading to a Bills 35-31 victory. This is the NFL at its best with The Divisional Round of the playoffs. Enjoy the games!

Justice for Tyler Lewis!
By Myles Carter IG @myles4sheriff
It has been over three months since the brutal stabbing of Tyler Lewis, a Black 19-year-old sophomore from Buffalo State University, and a grieving family and con cerned community are still searching for answers.
According to officials, Tyler was stabbed on Friday October 14, 2022 around 7:30 in the evening at UB North Campus near Elli cott Complex Residence Hall in Amherst, NY. He was rushed to ECMC where he was pronounced dead around 8 p.m. that evening. The assailant was described as a White male between 5’5” and 5’9” tall, light brown hair, medium build and wearing a blood-stained mustard-colored shirt. The assailant was also said to be between the ages of 19 and 22 with multiple lacerations on his face, including a large diagonal cut across his forehead and was seen fleeing the scene in a black sedan.
UB police chief Chris Bartolomei has stated that the attack “does not appear to be a random act of violence, but rather a targeted incident between known individuals.” The police believe there are as many as four others who are involved along with the assailant. In an article published by the Buffalo News, a student by the name of Ben Farhi describes how he had a friend who was attempting to leave the dorm at the time the attack was going on. According to the report, Farhi’s friend said he witnessed five individuals jump out of a car, beating someone up.
A request was made to the University at Buffalo for additional details regarding the investigation to Tyler Lewis’s death, and the following statement was provided, originally issued in November 2022. “UPD (University Police Department) has been asked to not disclose any information about the case until the DA is prepared to do so. We have been in contact with Tyler’s immediate family and have assured them that this case remains our top priority, in collaboration with our law enforcement partners in the Erie County District Attorney’s Office.”
When asked if there was any new information available, John Della Contrada, a spokesperson for the school replied, “Not publicly. The district attorneys have had conversations with the family.”
The family has said that they have not received any new updates from the DA’s office regarding the investigation into their son’s murder.
The vague details from the case are a reminder of when Saniyya Dennis, a 19-year-old Black sophomore student suddenly disappeared from Buffalo State University in April of 2021. The district attorney’s office’s investigation was near non-existent, and the law enforcement community was slow to act, leaving a grieving family in peril and the community to lead its own investigation.
According to Buffalo Poet Laureate, Jillian Hanesworth, she was contacted by the Lewis family to help bring awareness and seek justice for the murder of their son. Jillian, a known activist, has been in regular communication with the family and echoes their frustration in their fight for justice. The family has created the @justice4tylerlewis Instagram page, where they post updates and solicit information about the investigation into their son’s death.
Narmer-Menes: Great Warrior King
Reaching back into Egypt's antiquity, we find a great warrior king known as NarmerMenes. Heralded as Egypt's first king, his accomplishments were unrivaled in the ancient world.
One of Narmer-Menes's first acts as ruler of Egypt was to conquer the northern territories, which were occupied by the Libyans. As Egyptologist Alexandre Moret explains, "these people ... were in this period troglodytes [cavepeople] who assumed the character of starving pillagers, always on the lookout for a chance to raid the Egyptians."

At this time no arrests have been made regarding the stabbing of Tyler Lewis, and we don’t know if any murder weapon has even been recovered. We are told that the altercation was not random, but it is not clear if authorities know the identities of the White suspects involved in the brutal stabbing, and the district attorney’s office declined to comment when asked. We have not heard of any security cameras that may have caught the license plate of the vehicle or a picture of the any of the five assailants, and the last update from the University Police Department is that the single suspect is still at large.
It is unknown why the disparity in justice exists for Black people at the hands of the Erie County District Attorney’s office. Where we are quick to be prosecuted for crimes and coerced into plea deals, yet months can go on after the murder of a promising, young Black student at a university in Buffalo with no arrests or meaningful updates from the investigation. The Erie County District Attorney’s Office declined to provide any comment regarding the Lewis case, stating “it’s an ongoing investigation.”
We pray that the Lewis family can find closure in this brutal act that has taken their son, Tyler Lewis. May he be remembered as the funny, charismatic, and insightful young man they sent off into the world.
If you or anyone you know has any information that could assist the investigation into the brutal stabbing of Tyler Lewis, you can email buffalovictims@gmail.com where information will be provided to the family.
With the subjugation of these lands, Narmer-Menes formed a union of the north and the south. He designated the northern district Lower Egypt, reflecting its new and lower station within the territorial, political and religious hierarchy, and the southern district - the seedbed of the Egyptian race and cultureUpper Egypt. He then instituted a dynastic system, setting a precedent that would allow future monarchs to rule both districts. This signified the creation of the world's first acknowledged nation-state (approximately 3200 B.C.).
With his new empire in place, Narmer-Menes proceeded to create what came to be the Nile Delta. Contrary to popular belief, the Delta was not a natural phenomenon; in NarmerContinued Page 10

Pumpkin Seeds: A Superfood Snack With Super Benefits
Pumpkin seeds used to be everyone’s favorite among my friends growing up. Seemed every corner store sold lots of the slaty bags of processed seeds that we all munched on popping our lips and spitting out the shells until our lips turned white from the salt.
Fast forward to a more conscious time in life about snacks and pastime favorites, pumpkin seeds are still on my list however not the lethally sodium processed versions from back in the day.
Health food stores like Lexington Co-Op or Whole Foods bulk section carry the "pepitas" pumpkin seeds, the small greed and oval shaped seed, a variety found in specific pumpkins, unlike the big orange pumpkins we see in markets that yield the more familiar seed with the white hard shell covering you also find packaged in stores. Although not exactly the same both pumpkin varieties are equally nutritious.
No matter which type of edible pumpkin seeds you choose they are both high in antioxidants and can provide you with the healthy fats you need in your diet as well as much needed magnesium, zinc, copper, iron, fiber and a hefty 8+grams of protein.
Pumpkin seeds have been associated with heart health, bladder and prostate health, protection against some cancers, improved blood sugar and blood sugar control, enhanced sleep and even shown to improve fertility. ( best to limit your intake of the seed as professionals suggest it may interrupt stomach acid and agitate pre-existing digestive issues )
The popular pepita variety gives you plenty mileage. You can eat them plain sprinkle them into your salads, blend them into your smoothies, mix them into your baked goods or toss some into your yogurt or smoothie bowl. The list goes on and so will your health if you add them intermittently into your regiment. I have them when I want extra fiber or to ramp up my protein intake.
And yes, although pumpkin is not a favorite in many African American diets, it has the same "plus” benefits as their seed and can be quite delicious. As for the seeds you won't regret adding them to your diet. So give pumpkin seeds a spot in your regiment and enjoy the benefits of consuming this superfood seed! Be Well and Enjoy Good Health.

Tackling Financial Literacy and Wellness
Many people address, or intend to address, their physical health when setting New Year’s Resolutions, as they’d like to adopt better habits to improve their life. But have you considered setting financial resolutions?
Tameka Brooks is a Community Outreach Manager and Financial Empowerment Coach at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, collaborating with patients, employees and the public to better understand their relationship with money.
When it comes to serious illnesses, from COVID-19 to cancer, the term “financial toxicity” is often used: it refers to “the stress that one would endure at the onset of or diagnosis of an illness,” Brooks says. “It’s addressing the cost of care with your provider or insurer and understanding the full impact of your out-of-pocket cost. Do you have short-term disability? Long-term disability? Do you qualify under the Family Medical Leave Act? Do you know whether it will be a two-month span without income or longer? What do you have in place that will help you financially survive
that time? Financial toxicity is the financial stress a person endures upon diagnosis.”
It doesn’t have to be cancer to be a life-interrupting illness that takes away the ability to work. It could be the responsibility of caring for a loved one who has a serious illness and cannot care for themselves. Unfortunately, these are hard conversations to have and they can bring up feelings of stress, shame, insecurity and helplessness, combined with feeling overwhelmed at the prospect of such uncertainty. For people who grew up in households where money wasn’t discussed, it can also be a mysterious concept that people aren’t prepared for and don’t know how to talk about because they’ve never had or heard those kinds of conversations.
“You have to start to have these conversations,” Brooks says. “People don’t want to talk about it. When I came to Roswell Park, I met these two young ladies and when I told them about my job, their response was ‘Oh, I’m healthy, I don’t have to worry about it.’ The day before a diagnosis, our patients thought they were healthy too. It’s so important
to open up and converse about how do I survive, how do I plan out my finances.
I’ve been there, I’ve been up and down. When you’re struggling and living paycheck to paycheck, every day you wake up and that’s your concern. And to be honest, that brings on illness.” Feelings of stress can have a negative effect on overall health, contributing to increased blood pressure, poor eating and nutrition habits, a lack of exercise, increased levels of stress hormones, lack of sleep and other issues that can wear down the immune system and bring on illnesses.
Brooks has a flyer she brings to community meetings alongside Roswell Park’s Community Outreach & Education team, providing financial wellness information right next to information on the importance of early detection and regular screenings

Evergreen Health and Community Access Services to Expand Access to Quality Healthcare with Land Purchase at Kensington and Bailey
Evergreen Health and its affiliate Community Access Services (CAS), announced on Tuesday the purchase of four parcels at 1096, 1098 and 1102 Kensington Avenues, as well as 3074 Bailey Avenue with the intent to build a new building to expand healthcare services in the community.
The land was purchased by Evergreen Health Foundation, an affiliate of Evergreen Health from J-P Group, LLC for $870,000. Evergreen and CAS have retained Art Hall of Hallmark Planning & Development, a minority-owned planning consultant firm, to lead the project’s community engagement process. A construction date and site plans have not yet been determined.
CAS was established as an affiliate of Evergreen in 2000 to address HIV and other chronic conditions that challenge the health and welfare of urban communities in Buffalo and Erie County, in particular communities of color. Evergreen and CAS have had a presence at 3297 Bailey Avenue since 2018, and plan to depart its current location once the new building is complete.
“Since we opened our doors 40 years ago, our mission has been to provide quality care to those who are underserved and undervalued by the healthcare system,” said Ray Ganoe, president & CEO, Evergreen Health. “We’re only able to provide this comprehensive care because of community partnerships like the one we formed with Community Access Services years ago. Together, we have and will continue to provide that unconditional care that the community deserves at our new site which will build upon our mission to provide inclusive, compassionate, respectful and judgment-free care.”
“This is an exciting day for Community Access Services and everyone in the community who comes through our doors looking for access to quality healthcare,” said Kim Brown, executive director, Community Access Services. “We are at the beginning stages of this development project, but we are looking forward to talking more with the community about the services needed at our expanded location.”
In the coming months, Evergreen, CAS, and Hallmark Development will host public meetings, engage key stakeholders, and provide additional channels for community feedback as it works to develop the site. From a funding standpoint, Evergreen intends to support the development of the project from a variety of sources including a capital fundraising campaign.

100 Years From Mississippi
“Mamie's voice adds something unique and powerful as an authentic survivor’s story that cannot be duplicated. She has created a threshold of activism and courage that puts the rest of us on notice that you are never too old to do good...never too old to do justice work.”
-Bryan Stevenson, Equal Justice Initiative
Writer/Director & Buffalo native Tarabu Betserai Kirkland will present his documentary film “100 Years From Mississippi” in a special LIVE HOMETOWN screening and post-show in-person talkback with the director and artist Leroi Johnson at the Burchfield Penny Art Center, Saturday February 4th at 2:00 PM. The film will also be broadcast on WNED Buffalo/Toronto Public Media on Monday February 20th at 10:00 PM as part of its Black History Month programming.
In the city where #Mamie Lang Kirkland lived to be Buffalo's oldest citizen at 111, we are excited to share her true story of resilience, forgiveness, memory, and hope. Mamie Lang Kirkland was seven years old when she fled Ellisville, Mississippi in 1915 with her mother and siblings as her father and his friend, John Hartfield, escaped an approaching lynch mob. John Hartfield returned to Mississippi in 1919 and was killed in one of the most horrific lynchings of the era.
Mamie’s son, Tarabu, had grown up hearing stories of John Hartfield but didn’t know if his mother’s stories were fact or folklore until one day in 2015. Tarabu discovered a report by the Equal Justice Initiative titled “Lynching in America,” describing Hartfield’s murder before a crowd of 10,000 spectators. At that moment, the film was born.
Mamie had vowed for a century that she would never return to Mississippi. Yet with Tarabu’s remarkable find, he urged his mother to finally confront her childhood trauma by returning to Ellisville. Mamie was 107 when they began the journey to connect her story to the larger impact of America’s legacy of racial violence, which echoes today from Ferguson to New York, Atlanta to Los Angeles
Like many of the six million African Americans who left the Deep South, Mamie’s story is a testament to the courage and hope of her generation. Her indomitable will and contagious joy of living is exceeded only by her ability to tell her story now 111 years later. In a time of great social divisions, 100 Years From Mississippi gives us the simple wisdom of an ordinary woman’s extraordinary life.
Tickets for the Burchfield Penny Art Center screening are free and on a first come, first serve basis.
“100 Years From Mississippi” is directed and produced by Tarabu Betserai Kirkland and Producer Gina Rugolo Judd. Executive Producer and well-known TV and film actor Barry Shabaka Henley adds powerful poetic voiceover narration along with masterful editing by Cassandra Chowdhury and an emotionally powerful score by Derek Nakamoto with songs by the incomparable Keb’Mo.’Visit burchfieldpenney.org for more info and tickets for this free event.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “A Troublemaker for Jesus”
Faith summoned Dr. King, an ordained Baptist preacher, to the ministry. It made him a troublemaker for Jesus and it led him to criticize the church, criticize the world around him and, in turn, be criticized for those things. In honoring his legacy today, we must not let complacency or narrow faith blind us to what needs to trouble us too.
Dr. King passionately believed that a commitment to God is a commitment to bettering humanity, that the spiritual practices of prayer and worship must be translated into concern for the poor and vulnerable. Dr. King would want us to live his specific faith: work to defeat racism, speak out in principled opposition to war and combat poverty with enlightened and compassionate public policy.
Dr. King saw faith as an urgent call to service, a selfless ethic of concern that, he said, quoting the Hebrew prophet Amos, made “justice roll down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
Dr. King often declared his preacher’s vocation by citing something like a biblical genealogy of Black sacred rhetoric that traced through his family: “I grew up in the church. My father is a preacher, my grandfather was a preacher,
my great-grandfather was a preacher, my only brother is a preacher. My daddy’s brother is a preacher…”
A midnight kitchen experience over a cup of coffee after he received phone calls threatening to blow out his brains and blow up his house during the Montgomery bus boycott gave the fear-stricken Dr. King a sense of God’s unshakable presence. He said that instead of inherited faith, he had to forge the terms of his own relationship to the Almighty.
“I had to know God for myself,” he explained. “I could hear an inner voice saying to me, ‘Martin Luther, stand up for righteousness, stand up for justice, stand up for truth. And lo, I will be with you, even until the end of the world.’” For the rest of his life Dr. King did just that.
Excerpted from “We Forgot What Dr. King Believed In” an article by Michael Eric Dyson, renowned scholar, ordained Baptist minister and public intellectual. Ed Note: When Dr. King visited Buffalo in 1967, the only church that was fearless enough to allow him speak was St. John Baptist Church, which at the time, was pastored by the Rev. Burnie C. McCarley, founder of the church.

Newest Edition Afro-Americans in New York Life and History Honors Victims and Survivors of the Tops Massacre
The most recent edition of Afro-Americans in New York Life and History honors the victims of the May 14, 2022 Tops Supermarket shooting who lost their lives or were injured: Roberta A. Drury, Margus D. Morrison, Andre Mackniel, Aaron Salter, Geraldine Talley, Celestine Chaney, Heyward Patterson, Katherine Massey, Pearl Young, Ruth Whitfield, Zaire Goodman, Jennifer Warrington, and Christopher Braden.
Writes Journal editor Michael B. Boston:
"The journal's content consists of testimonies from victims' family members, articles from informed citizens, and a report from the Office of the New York State Attorney General, Letitia James. Mark Talley shared his testimony at a Buffalo, New York May 19, 2022 meeting sponsored by Reverend Al Sharpton and Benjamin Crump, while Garnell Whitfield, Jr. and Zeneta B. Everhart both gave testimonies before U. S. Congress. In assessing events, author Norm R. Allen, Jr. offers a timely article titled White Terrorism in Buffalo. Scholars Drs. Silvia M. Lloyd and Ron Stewart offer a sociological view in explaining racially motivated killings, whereas scholar Steve Peraza grapples with the theme that 'Black Lives in fact do matter.'
"In the Appendix, New York State Attorney General, Letitia James and her staff offer a detail report of issues and events surrounding the Tops Supermarket Shoot of May 19.
"In echoing Zeneta B. Everhart's congressional testimony, African Americans have constantly been under attack since the colonial days of enslavement. Nonetheless, as articulated by the late Maya Angelou: 'Still Black people rise and will continue to rise.' The Journal of Afro-Americans in New York Life and History offers our condolences to the victims, their families, the entire Black community, and all concerned caring human beings. We publish these sources so that these stories can never be forgotten."

On Second Thought AND STILL WE RISE: BILLS HANG ON TO BEAT MIAMI
The Bills narrow and closer than expected 34 – 31 victory over the Miami Dolphins clearly shows that they have much more work to do if they are to continue their march to Super Bowl LVII. After word came that Tua Tagovailoa would be unable to play because of the concussion protocol, it seemed that the Dolphins would be easy pickings. However, the 244th pick of the 2022 NFL draft, one Skylar Thompson, said, “not so fast.” The rookie quarterback, making only his third career start, almost led Miami to what would have been one of the biggest upsets in NFL playoff history.
Although the Bills pulled out to an early 17 – 0 lead, they seemed to lose focus for a minute and allowed Miami to get back into the game with turnovers and missed opportunities. This was a scary game and the question to ask going forward in a single elimination tournament like the Super Bowl is: What lesson did the Bills learn? What I think they should have learned is that they must be focused and convicted for a full 60 minutes and not allow themselves to become sloppy and complacent as they did in allowing the Dolphins to make the game so close.
Nonetheless, these Bills are still who I think they are and that is a very talented group of players who have been elevated by the difficulty and hardship that they have faced and overcome this season. The Bills may or may not be destiny’s team – that remains to be seen. But there is no doubt in my mind, at least, that they’ve earned more good ‘karma’ than any other team in the league. Do we need to count the ways?
But exactly what do I mean by that? I mean that these Bills have faced more adversity both as a team and as a part of the Buffalo community, than any other team in the league and it’s not even close. But yet, in the immortal words of the late, great Maya Angelou, “And still we rise!”
But in order to keep on rising, the Bills will have to take care of business against the explosive Cincinnati Bengals. As I see it, the Bills will get a needed break from the overflow of adrenaline and emotion that they’ve fed on for the last several weeks. Me thinks they will be a calmer and more focused team against the Bengals and quite ready to take care of business against a team whose offensive line has been decimated by injuries.
Three of the Bengals five starters will likely be out (or playing injured), which will leave QB Joe Burrow extremely vulnerable to a strong Bills pass rush. And that is exactly what it will take to cage the Bengals and their talented corps of receivers. This is a game for the defense to win and I think they will come to play.
On the offensive side, the Bills and especially, Josh Allen, must play mistake-free football. That means no more silly, red zone interceptions and no more “hero ball,” (unless of course it becomes absolutely necessary.)
And a final word on the Bills offensive line.
Those guys need to do a better job. The Dolphins racked up seven sacks against the Bills and left Josh running for his life on several other occasions. We all know that Allen is the engine that runs the train and the offensive line boys are the conductors who must assure that the train has safe passage throughout the Super Bowl tourney.
Right now, the Bills Super Bowl hopes lie at the junction between Destiny and Karma and the Bills lead the league in ‘good karma.’ Still, I’d feel a whole lot better if we had that exorcism outside City Hall to ‘Reverse the Curse.’

POLITICAL UPDATE 2023
Amusing Playful Energetic: The Snowy Day and Other Stories Colorfully Brought to Life at Theatre of Youth!
It’s true. You can ask almost anyone this question “Do you remember the book The Snowy Day”? The answer will often be the same excited reply, “Yes I loved that story! or “Yes I still have my book from childhood!”
Well now you can get that old feeling back and share it with your children as The Snowy Day and Other Stories (adapted for the stage by Jerome Hariston) colorfully comes to life as a musical on stage at Theatre of Youth every Saturday and Sunday at 2pm until February 5!
Last Friday the show opened to rows of wide eyed children (and their parents) eager to take in the memorable and spirited adventures of Peter, a young African American boy (played by actress Davida Evette Tolbert) who with his friends , his dog ,and the loving support of his parents, tackles daily life experiences and curiosities with determination and epic fun! Not to mention Talking Leaves Books has a collection of Keats books available in the lobby.
The musical is brilliantly directed by Annette Daniels Taylor. With an all Black and Brown cast of Buffalo born and raised talent, the musical rolls out four unforgettable stories from the collection of books by Ezra Jack-Keats, a celebrated author from the 60’s who was best known for introducing multiculturalism into mainstream American children’s literature. His works in the show include The Snowy Day, Whistle for Willie, Goggles and Letter to Amy.
Daniels-Taylor’s vision is evident as the actors seamlessly carry the audience through their fearless, fun filled, imaginary lens in their roles as children for this lively 50 minute musical. It’s chock full of feel good energy and heart felt memories of friendship, growth and childhood adventure.
It begins with the title story, “The Snowy Day” where Peter, played by actress Davida Evette Tolbert, excitedly sets out (in the indelible bright red snowsuit) for play in the first snowfall of the year, and yes the snowball fight does happen! Tolbert does an excellent portrayal of our beloved character Peter and blesses the stage with magnetic, energetic unstoppable kid vibes in every scene for her debut performance under TOY’s roof.
“Playing Peter is so much fun! It brought out a lot of imagination that I didn’t think I had into playing a little boy,” said Tolbert. “It’s one of the best roles I’ve played in my career!”
Daniels-Taylor had a goal to find actors who had not yet worked on the TOY stage before. Although a lot of fun she said that finding Peter was not easy.
“It’s my first musical and It was very challenging in the beginning,” she said. “ I called a lot of Black and Brown male actors in town and very few were either available or not interested, mostly due to the production’s school time performance schedule. So my next move was, who can play the part of Peter? The first person who popped into my mind was Davida!”
The other actors for this high energy production were cast to not play just one role but all supporting roles and what a dynamic job well done!
Megan Rakeepile (who is a professional dancer) plays Peter’s Mom, friend Archie and Amy and various kids voices. Understudy Kristen-Maria Lopez plays the role during the Saturday performances. Roderick Garr plays Peter’s Dad, his dog Willie, Pepe, Boys and other voices and is no stranger to the stage (Jerai Khadim is the understudy for this role). Megan and Roderick worked with professional ease switching from supportive parents to play in overdrive as kids. adding even more lift to Peter’s spirited character.
“At first I was nervous about the multiple roles but it was just like playing and putting on the different characters. I remember The Snowy Day as a kid so it was like living out a childhood dream,” said Megan. “I’ve been acting since I was 5 years old but it’s not the first time I’ve played a kid as an adult. This has been loads of fun,” said Roderick before being bombarded with puppet questions from the kids after the talk back opening night.
The entire creative team made magic for this production to bring the theatrics of the characters to life.
Costume Design by Rashaad Holley delivers outstanding and vibrant reimagined looks for his first time debut at TOY. Holley hits home with every single design especially Peter’s signature red snowsuit the whole world remembers and loves! Scenic Designer Peter Schwartz, along with the entire visual team, created larger than life cut-out like set ups and colorful props (by artisan Diane Almeter Jones) just like Keats’ books! I myself wanted to play and go down the big snowy mountain like Peter, who in sheer delight repeatedly said “go again” sliding down so many times I’m convinced the actor snuck in a few extra turns. Choreographer Gaitrie Devi provided expert guidance that set the characters bodies in playful motion in through these very active scenes. Puppet designer Michele Costa added even more imagination through her amazing creations and Musical Director Joe Isgar , Sound Designer Brian Wantuck and Lighting Designer Brian Cavanagh layer in top notch effects sealing the deal for these authentic classic stories performed on TOY's stage.
The Snowy Day and Other Stories is a true Gem! So get the kids and even your adult friends and head to the theatre! You definitely don’t want to miss out on this playdate! -L.H. Go to theatreofyouth.org for tickets and more info.

THE EMBRACE
Astunning public art sculpture by artist Hank Willis Thomas was recently unveiled just days before Dr. King’s Birthday. In a worldwide celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the City of Boston unveiled its newest monument, by African American artist Hank Willis Thomas sculpture, that now sits on the grounds of Boston Common, the nation’s oldest public park. Titled "The Embrace," the 40 feet wide 20 feettall bronze statue is a pair of larger-than-life interlocking arms, inspired by a photo of King and his wife, Coretta Scott King, hugging after he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. It represents the dedication, devotion and strength of Martin and Coretta's activism, love and hope for before they met while they were married and after his death and the mutual support that made Kings’ activism possible. This project had been in the works since 2016. Hank Willis Thomas’ design, with MASS Design Group, was selected from 125 proposals. The sculpture weighs 38,000 pounds.
“When I saw that photography of Dr. King and Mrs. King on the day that he received the Nobel Prize, I saw the incredible bond and that it wasn’t just his celebration it was their celebration," said the artist in a recent interview. "I saw the warmth of the hug and the power of that embrace. And I saw her strength literally holding him up throughout all of these different trials and tribulations and the fact that she was with him every step of the way and then carried on the legacy after he was assassinated was something that I really felt needed to be highlighted with this work," said the artist in a recent interview. Happy New Year!
On Sunday, January 8, 2023, in Toronto, the Portland Trailblazers came into town to play the Raptors on a brisk winter afternoon. The Trialblazers were looking to put an end to their losing streak of six in The Six. That would not be so that day as you can tell in the photo(s) provided. Toronto denied and rejected all ideas of this as they blocked 8 field goal attempts in the game and turned the Blazers over 24 times for 29 points. After a Pascal Siakam three pointer with 1:01 left in the first quarter the Raptors took the lead 30-27 and never looked back. Toronto won the game 117-105. Siakam ended the game with 27 points and Scottie Barnes had 22 to help snap the Raptors’ three game losing streak. Dame Lillard had a game high 34 points. 14 of those baskets was in the fourth quarter as he attempted to bring Portland back with a spirited run of his own. -photos and text by A. Dorcely

Open Letter To All Elected Officials Of Western New York
Commentary on the Storms of 2022
The storms of 2022 are a direct result of climate change and the fact that Lake Erie is not freezing over as it once did. This issue within itself will create more devastating and violent winter storms. Rather than attack government, we need to put ideas out there that can be considered to prepare for the worst-case scenarios. First local, county, and state officials need to collaborate on investigating the cost for outfitting a winter emergency response patrol by researching the cost of outfitting snowmobiles. These winter specialized vehicles would be equipped for medical, fire, and law enforcement purposes. Once these costs are budgeted on how to outfit these specialized winter emergency response vehicles. Government must then look at the cost of training existing personnel. These specialized patrols would come under the same criteria as swat units because every life is precious, and government cannot fail any person in need of their assistance no matter the circumstances. These specialized units must be spread over the entire region so all our region can expect help if needed.
Rather than point the finger let us work together to build a better region for all.

A Message from Dr. King
Dr. King, on October 26, 1967, six months before he was assassinated, spoke to a group of students at Barratt Junior High School in Philadelphia. The speech was tilted “What Is Your Life's Blueprint?”It cannot be more straight forward than that. We need a life blueprint!
He started the speech this way.
“I want to ask you a question, and that is: What is your life's blueprint?
"Whenever a building is constructed, you usually have an architect who draws a blueprint, and that blueprint serves as the pattern, as the guide, and a building is not well erected without a good, solid blueprint. Now each of you is in the process of building the structure of your lives, and the question is whether you have a proper, a solid and a sound blueprint. I want to suggest some of the things that should be in your life's blueprint. Number one in your life's blueprint should be a deep belief in your own dignity, your worth and your own somebodiness Don't allow anybody to make you feel that you're nobody. Always feel that you count. Always feel that you have worth, and always feel that your life has ultimate significance. Secondly, in your life's blueprint you must have as the basic principle the determination to achieve excellence in your various fields of endeavor. You're going to be deciding as the days, as the years unfold what you will do in life — what your life's work will be. Set out to do it well. And I say to you, my young friends, doors are opening to you--doors of opportunities that were not open to your mothers and your fathers — and the great challenge facing you is to be ready to face these doors as they open. "
"Remembering Dr. King" Essay Contest for Youth

Participants must write a two-page typed essay on these questions and others. The deadline to enter is January 30, 2023.
The prizes are $150 first place, $75 second place, and $50 third place. The Buffalo and Erie County library donated the first and second prize and Dr. Anwar Y. Dunbar donated the third prize. All completed essays must be emailed to Dr. Eva M. Doyle at ewriter52@roadrunner.com.
For more information you can call (716) 847-6010.
Every year on Dr. King’s Holiday, WHAT IS YOUR LIFE BLUEPRINT? should be asked of ourselves, and of our children, nieces, nephews and grandchildren, grandnieces, and grandnephews. The follow up questions should be how are you or I going to build the structure designed by the blueprint, and what are you and I doing today to make that structure a reality tomorrow? Our success depends on every person, family and community having a blueprint for success. Success does not come from circumstance or chance; it comes from purposeful desires and actions. Success and failure are both on purpose, whether we want to believe it or not. I do not deny that America is racist and we as a people suffered and continue to suffer in this country. What is our blueprint to turn dark yesterdays to bright tomorrows? To do so, we must fully embrace Dr. King’s words “you (we) must have as the basic principle the determination to achieve excellence in your (our) various fields of endeavor.” Of note, this is beyond sports and entertainment fields. We are underrepresented in every area of the higher income generating fields. This means that there are various fields of untapped or under-tapped opportunity for us, our children, and children’s children. According to City-Data.com for 2019 our (Black community’s) median income in Buffalo was $33,017, compared to White’s was $62,401. We have 32.2% of our community living with an annual income of ≤ $20,000 and 11.3% with an annual income of ≥ $100,000, this is compared to the annual incomes of whites 16.2% (≤ $20,000) and 30.8% (≥ $100,000). What is our blueprint to increase our income and our wealth? According to the Buffalo Public Schools Strategic Plan 2019-2021, Black BPS students’ proficiency on the 2019 NYS ELA test was 18%, NYS math test was 13%, regents CC ELA test was 66% and Regents CC Algebra I test was 48%, compared white students’ proficiency scores of NYS ELA 48%, NYS math 40%, regents CC ELA 85% and Regents CC Algebra I 74% for Whites. What is our collective and individual blueprint to correct these dismal academic outcomes that have sentenced our young people and their children to poverty? BTW, if you are wondering why our incomes are less than whites, it is because our academic achievement is less than whites. Pay is according to your value. Value is according to the knowledge, wisdom and understanding that one brings to their craft and to the marketplace. Again, I ask WHAT
IS YOUR LIFE BLUEPRINT?
Well let’s take a small peek into his last speech. ‘I’ve Been to the Mountaintop.’ “Now, what does all of this mean in this great period of history? It means that we’ve got to stay together. We’ve got to stay together and maintain unity. You know, whenever Pharaoh wanted to prolong the period of slavery in Egypt, he had a favorite formula for doing it. What was that? He kept the slaves fighting among themselves. But whenever the slaves get together, something happens in Pharaoh’s court, and he cannot hold the slaves in slavery. When the slaves get together, that’s the beginning of getting out of slavery. Now let us maintain unity. Now, we are poor people. Individually, we are poor when you compare us with white society in America. We are poor. Never stop and forget that collectively — that means all of us together — collectively we are richer than all the nations in the world, with the exception of nine. “
Yes, Dr. King talked about collective economics. Individual/personal development and prosperity combined with collective economics, or a collective Black economy is a successful blueprint for raising ourselves, our families, and our race out of slavery and into true citizenship and creating our ability to cash the American check “that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice”-MLK.

Deadly Blizzard Urgently Demands that Elected Officials Reimagine Safety in Buffalo
By Jalonda Hill and Karina Tefft, Buffalo Fair Fines and Fees Coalition
As of January 4th, 2023, at least 42 people in Erie County have lost their lives due to the deadliest blizzard to hit Buffalo in decades. Though Buffalo is known for snow — experiencing yet another massive snowstorm just before Thanksgiving — the city was wildly unprepared to protect Buffalo’s most vulnerable communities from the blizzard’s ensuing devastation. The resulting death, trauma, and loss are no accident. They are the direct result of years of mismanaged city finances and extractive and punitive policies by Mayor Brown and his administration that deprioritize the health and safety of low-income and Black and Brown people. The tragic impact of the Buffalo Blizzard urgently demands that the city reimagine its approach to public safety.
For days, the city’s uncoordinated blizzard response left tens of thousands of Buffalonians without heat, power or food. Its fleet of snow plows and trucks was not enough and left C-District and the East Side to be plowed last, if at all. Power outages swept the city, concentrated mostly on the East Side. Senior and public housing buildings flooded, exacerbating already deplorable living conditions. Countless 911 calls went unanswered. Dozens died from exposure, from freezing in their own homes or cars, or waiting on medical support that would never come.
The failure to enact restorative and preventative policies prior to the storm, such as the implementation of a large snowstorm and blizzard plan, investment in reliable and equitable safety technology, investment in sidewalk and street infrastructure, increasing the budget of the Department of Public Works, and increasing the inventory of emergency equipment and vehicles, positioned the city to spend disproportionate resources on policing.
Instead of responding to calls for life-saving assistance, the BPD used roadblocks, ticketing, and arrests to control Buffalonians during the blizzard. This approach punished and profited from those who were forced to drive to access supplies, shelter, or to aid community members in need when the city would not. In some instances, it further endangered lives. Cariol Horne, who was famously and unjustly fired by the Buffalo police after stopping a White officer from choking a Black man, was assaulted and arrested by the BPD when trying to assist several people who were forced to sit in the freezing snow during a police stop on Bailey Avenue.
Buffalo’s blizzard response is part of a long trend of city policies that surveil, punish, and mine resources from our communities, particularly low-income and Black and Brown neighborhoods. This includes measures like the School Zone Speed Camera Program that was dismantled in 2021, mandatory fees on traffic tickets that were implemented in 2018 and later repealed, the BPD vehicle checkpoint program that started around 2012, which subjected a disproportionate number of drivers on the East Side to suspicionless traffic stops and excessive ticketing; the criminalization of the use of ATVs; and the $250,000 proposed Gunfire detection system ShotSpotter, which is intended to help the BPD reduce gun violence through added surveillance in Black and Brown communities.
The continuous increases to the police budget and commitment to law enforcement-based solutions to public safety concerns actually undermine the safety of our communities. Combined with the overburdening and underfunding of the Office of Strategic Planning and the Department of Public Works, the city’s policy decisions have ensured its disorganized, reactive, and completely inadequate response to the deadly Buffalo Blizzard.
The city must take accountability. While we support the NYU impact study on the blizzard and Scanlon's blizzard-related resolutions, this is not enough.
The city must proactively reassess its budget priorities to reimagine safety in Buffalo and move away from punitive and extractive solutions. It can start by settling the years-long federal lawsuit concerning the BPD’s excessive and racially discriminatory traffic enforcement tactics, restructuring the Department of Public Works and creating a separate office focused on transportation and traffic safety, improving the city's street infrastructure, and relegating traffic enforcement to unarmed, civilian safety officers instead of the BPD. Actions like these will not only keep people safe in times of crisis, but will create broader, systemic change toward racial and economic justice.
Activist’s Criticism of City Response to Blizzard Unfair
Dear editor:
I am writing in response to an article in last week’s Challenger entitled “Activist Launches Blizzard 2022 Left for Dead,” a protest led by known troublemaker Taniqua Simmons.
dear editor
First let me say that my heart and prayers go out to the families of the 40 plus people that died as a result from the blizzard we just experienced in Buffalo, NY. In the article activist Taniqua Simmons blames the city for people dying. The mayor and other elected officials warned people numerous times about this dangerous blizzard and strongly urged people to stay off the roads and to stay home. The mayor even suggest they people go out that Thursday and purchase food, candles, flashlights, etc. so that they wouldn’t have to go out in this dangerous storm. In the article Ms. Simmons suggested that the schools, community centers, churches should have been open as a resource for people to go to. Many of these places lost power as well as heat too and the message was to stay off the roads and stay home. I don’t know if she received that message.
I think the City of Buffalo responded to the storm the best that they could under the circumstances. The streets were extremely bad with white out conditions that even ambulances, police vehicles, plow trucks were getting stuck on roads. It simply wasn’t safe to go out at all whether you’re walking or driving. Taniqua Simmons stated that she wants an independent investigation and she wants the elected officials including the mayor and council members arrested. Well I have bad news for her, that will never happen simply because they did nothing wrong. The Buffalo police department did an awesome job going above and beyond by rescuing people and doing the job as funeral directors by transporting deceased bodies to the morgue. The police stations were used as shelters so people need to stop criticizing and start giving credit to those that risk their own life to save others.
I do think going forward, the City of Buffalo and other municipalities should purchase ATV’s and snowmobiles to get around in the snow in an effort to save people. It’s an learning experience and I’m sure the city will take the necessary steps and prepare better for the next storm/blizzard.

An Idea for Cheap and Safe Solution for Heat During Freezing Temperatures!
Dear Editor,
I have an idea that may help people if the power goes off or they are stuck in their cars during freezing weather.
This idea is for inexpensive "Hand Warmers" often used for camping or hunting.
HotHands Hand Warmers - Long Lasting Safe Natural Odorless Air Activated Warmers provide up to 10 Hours of Heat .
Here are some of the benefits:
•No electricity or gas is required.
•Just shake and they provide up to 10 hours of heat (70 degrees).
*Used often by hunters and campers.
*Work well in a pocket under blankets, or in boots.
•Keep in the car glove box during winter (so you don't have to keep your car running with carbon monoxide, or risk leaving your car in a storm to search for warmth, best under a blanket to hold in heat).
•Keep in purses when going outside during winter in case you get stranded anywhere.
•Keep at home in an emergency kit. Should be part of any emergency kit in Buffalo.
•A cheap and safe solution for heat. They cost under $1 each (less if buying bulk on Amazon, more if buying individually at, say, a dollar store). Much cheaper than installing a wood stove or buying a generator...safer too.
•With weather patterns changing, the recent storm could happen again with even more snow and colder temperatures. Gas heat could also go off if condensation freezes inside the pipe. For more information please go to https://a.co/d/0EFqeWp
I used them and was toasty warm under a blanket.
They should be part of any emergency kit for home or car-especially in Buffalo or cold, snowy climates.
I emailed Mayor Brown to see if the City could be involved with promoting, acquiring, or distributing these types of hand warmers to residents in need. Perhaps another fundraiser could help with that.
This might save lives, prevent frostbite, or at least make people more comfortable and feel more secure until they get help. Thank you, Challenger, for being such a great newspaper!

When people start to think about, and take action to improve, their financial wellness, it’s very empowering," Brooks says.
" It gives people a better sense of control over their lives and their future and gives them a sense of direction. Setting goals, even small or short-term ones, helps build on those feelings. But they need to start somewhere.
“There are people who feel they don’t have the money to take care of things. We waste money, all of us, no matter what,” she says. “Sometimes you have to say no, I cannot go out to dinner, I have this other goal.
You can start by throwing money into the right bucket so that you can overcome whatever the challenge is right now.”
