Mayor Lovely A. Warren has announced that Nancy Johns-Price, the City’s administrator of the Southeast Quadrant Neighborhood Service Center (NSC), is retiring Jan. 29 after a more than 36-year career with the City of Rochester and County of Monroe.

The Mayor has appointed Kelvin Knight, who has been the Southeast NSC’s assistant to the administrator since 2010, as the new administrator.

“Kelvin Knight is truly committed to helping the people of Rochester live their best lives and achieve their full potential,” said Mayor Warren. “His appointment creates a nearly seamless transition that will keep our Neighborhood Service Centers on their trajectory of continuous improvement. City Launches Second Phase of Senior Meal Restaurant Grant Program The City of Rochester is launching the second phase of its popular Senior Meal Delivery Restaurant Grant Program by collaborating with 25 restaurants to deliver meals to area seniors.

The restaurants will deliver meals to area seniors, age 60 and above, who are unable to travel or frequent restaurants due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Administered by the City's Department of Neighborhood and Business Development, the grant will reimburse participating restaurants up to $24,900 to prepare and deliver free meals to area seniors, 60 and above, who have limited mobility during the pandemic. Funding for the program is provided through the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. Restaurants were selected through a competitive proposal process.

Seniors can call 211 to place an order, with deliveries beginning Friday, Jan. 8. The program will run through April 30.

Powell is a well-known social worker and community activist in the City of Rochester. Aside from being a substance abuse therapist, Mr. Powell founded the Reentry & Community Development Center (RCDC-17) in 2017. Drivers! Watch for School Zone Speed Cameras at These Locations They're back! Buffalo’s School Zone Speed Cameras are once again in effect at schools that have returned to inperson learning. Flashing beacons on the streets around the schools will alert motorists that school is in session and that the 15 mph speed limit is in effect for the hours listed on signs below the zone’s posted speed limit.

Although the beacons flash during the entire school day, the speed cameras will be activated only at arrival and dismissal times, which vary by school.

Vehicles captured on camera traveling at least 26 mph when the cameras are activated receive a $50 citation mailed to the registered owner.

The Speed Zone cameras are now in effect at: • Canisius High School • Nichols School • Notre Dame Academy • St. Joseph University School • Buffalo Promise Neighborhood Children’s Academy.

Rene Petties-Jones Named President of National Conference for Just Communities WNY President After a nationwide search, The National Federation for Just Communities of Western New York, Inc. (NFJCWNY) one of the region’s oldest human rights organizations announced the appointment of Rene Petties-Jones as President.

The appointment, which was made in late October, followed the retirement of longtime President Lana Benatovich, who had served as President of the organization for 29-years.

Petties-Jones has been with the NFJCWNY for 14-years serving in roles as the Director of Community Engagement and Special Events/Fund Development Coordinator.

“Rene is the right leader at the right time for the NFJCWNY as our community focuses on social justice issues” said Bernie Tolbert NFJC WNY Board Chair. “We are confident with her depth of Rene Petties-Jones knowledge of Western New York, community connections, compassion for others, and commitment to justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion, Rene will be the perfect person to lead us as we face the range of equity issues that confront our region and nation in these difficult times.”

Petties-Jones received her dual B.A. in Psychology and Human Services from the University at Buffalo and is a graduate of Buffalo City Honors School. She has received numerous recognitions and awards including the Business First Women of Influence award and serves on several local and regional boards of directors.

“I’m honored to be given the awesome responsibility of leading this important organization.” said Rene Petties-Jones. “Assuming the mantle from Lana is an honor that I take very seriously. Mayor, Lights Up City Hall, Orders Flags Flown at Half Staff in Honor of George K. Arthur On Tuesday evening (January 5) Mayor Byron W. Brown paid special tribute to honor the late George K. Arthur, one of Buffalo's most prominent leaders and a major figure in the City's African American community. Brown directed the dome atop Buffalo City Hall to be lit white overnight in Arthur's honor and called on the Buffalo Landmark Illumination Team (LIT) to also light their structures in the local icon’s memory.

Additionally, for the first time in City of Buffalo history, Mayor Brown directed every light to be illuminated in each window of Buffalo City Hall, in honor of Mr. Arthur's lasting, positive impact on our community. The date was selected to honor the former Common Council President because Tuesday January 5, marked the first Common Council meeting of 2021.

Brown stated, "George K. Arthur was a beacon of hope to the City of Buffalo, which is why this first- of-its-kind tribute is a fitting memorial. He fought for equity, opportunity and fairness every day of his life, and the City of Buffalo is a better place because of his efforts.

We must ensure that future generations never forget George K. Arthur's legacy. He is yet another example of how the actions of one person can be a spark to ignite positive change in our community."

The mayor also ordered City of Buffalo flags lowered to half staff December 31, 2020 Through January 4, to Mr. Arthur, one of Buffalo's most prominent government, political and civic leaders, and a major figure in the African American community.

Black History In Buffalo: The Niagara Movement In early 1900s, the charge to change the culture surrounding the acceptance and treatment of Black people in this country took on a new face under “The Niagara Movement.” Initiated by W.E.B. Du Bois, it began as a group of leading African-American activists, publishers, intellectuals, writers and others—known as Niagarites—who met in both Buffalo and across the border in Erie Beach, Ontario, in Canada to adopt a constitution and by-laws that ultimately became a cornerstone of an early civil rights era. The movement is credited with providing a framework for many of the Black entities that formed in Buffalo and the surrounding region, and within five or so years became the basis of the newly formed NAACP. Integral locations and organizations associated with the Niagara Movement include the Michigan Avenue Baptist Church. Built in 1845, it was an important place for abolitionists, enslaved Africans escaping to freedom, anti-lynching activists and dignitaries of the day, such as Booker T. Washington, Frederick Douglass and Du Bois, and still stands today as one of the oldest properties in Buffalo continuously operated by African-Americans.

5 Valentino Dixon Receives Praise from Former President Barack Obama for His Artwork Buffalo-based artist Valentino Dixon was recently commissioned by former First Lady Michelle Obama for a 20″ x 30″ drawing of the 12th hole of Augusta National Golf Club as a gift to Barack Obama for Christmas after seeing his interview with Bryant Gumbel on his Real Sports HBO Special This exact drawing also happens to be the very first golf course Dixon drew when he was incarcerated at Attica and was the first of hundreds of drawings he would create before being released in September of 2018 (as featured in the cover of the challenger news) from prison after serving 27 years for a crime he didn’t commit and has been exonerated as another man confessed to the crime.

Dixon’s national attention, Sports Illustrated feature meeting Tiger Woods and Real Sports HBO special and now being part of the Obamas collection is just the beginning for this 51-year-old Buffalo artist. Dixon says that the drawing would be hanging in Barak’s office. As part of the gift, he recorded a video to accompany it with a special message for Barack.

Recently, in response to receiving the gift from Michelle, Barack Obama applauded Dixon in a message to his 34 million Instagram followers.

Obama Wrote on his Instagram Page: “For Christmas, Michelle surprised me with this drawing of the 12th hole at Augusta National by the terrific artist @ Valentino Dixon. It’s an incredible piece, but the story behind it is even better,” Obama posted. “Valentino grew up in Buffalo, New York and developed a great skill and passion for drawing from a young age. Unfortunately, when he was 21, he was wrongfully convicted for a crime he didn’t commit and sentenced to a minimum of 38 1/2 years in prison.”

Obama also wrote about Dixon’s release from prison and the work he has done as an advocate for prison reform. “Today, Valentino travels extensively to share his story and promote the need for criminal justice reform. And thankfully, for me and for so many others he continues to draw.”

In a quote by Dixon found on his website the artist proclaims: “It weighs heavily on my mind that we need change in the system, so my mind is not at peace until we get something done.”

Since being released from prison he has spoken about Justice reform at universities, schools, golf clubs as well as speaking engagements overseas and around the world not to mention being featured in countless national newspapers and magazines.

Not long after his release, Burchfield Penney Arts was the first to sponsor a solo show of Dixon’s incredible golf course originals among other works from the artist’s archive.

This year's annual GYC Ministries Christmas Toy Giveaway was another success! Despite the tremendous snowfall, the fire inside of Pastor Tim warmed the hearts of young and old in this effort to bring joy to kids in the community of Buffalo, NY. This free event was done with help from Kente Clause, Mayor Byron Brown, Otis Barker, and other volunteers from the surrounding community.

PRAYER VIGIL 2021 For The Buffalo Five

On Monday, January 18 starting at 5:30 p.m. and lasting for approximately 30 minutes John H. Walker, Jr. and Darryl Boyd, collectively known as 'The Buffalo 5', will convene a PRAYER VIGIL that will be broadcast on Legendary Mix WUFO1080 AM and Power 96.5FM. Numerous local clergy will be joining them; filling the broadcast with powerful prayer that will support the men concerning their court battle to gain a thorough exoneration of their wrongful 1977 murder indictments and convictions.

The five members of 'The Buffalo 5', are: John Walker, Jr., Darryl Boyd, Darryn Gibson, Floyd Martin, and Tyrone Woodruff.

Both Walker, Boyd, and Darryn Gibson (prior to his death), have persistently proclaimed their innocence of the robbery and murder of William Crawford, an elderly gentleman who

The Buffalo 5 are a group of five African-American men who, as 16 year old teenagers in 1976, were falsely accused and wrongly arrested, indicted, tried (in 1977) , convicted, and imprisoned for a brutal crime that they did not commit.

•What did their original 1977 trials concern?

The original trials of The Buffalo 5, were for the murder of a man named William Crawford. Crawford was beaten to death and robbed in the early hours of Jan. 2, 1976.

•Why are The Buffalo 5 important?

One of The Buffalo 5, Tyrone Woodruf, after being mercilessly interrogated by Bufalo Police, turned State's Evidence against himself and his four friends, falsely implicating himself and the others. Another of The Bufalo 5, Floyd Martin, was exonerated at trial. However, three of The Bufalo 5, John Walker, Jr., Darryl Boyd, and Darryn Gibson were all convicted. Moreover, evidence that could have exonerated these three, was withheld from their (public defender) defense attorneys, during tme of the 1977 trials.

Finally, all five of The Bufalo 5 were actually innocent!

•How many years did The Buffalo 5 spend in prison?

Roswell Park Brightens the Holidays for its Neighbors

Roswell Park is not only a world-class cancer center — it’s a family of people offering a helping hand to others in the City of Good Neighbors. The hospital and its staff promote the overall health and wellness of everyone who calls Buffalo home, providing assistance and good cheer.

That’s especially true during the holiday season. Between November and December holidays, Roswell Park employees came together to help make the season brighter for our neighbors who are struggling financially. In the days leading up to Thanksgiving, Roswell Park organized a collection of turkeys and nonperishable foods that filled a total of 40 large boxes, distributed by FeedMore WNY to Buffalo families so they could enjoy a special holiday meal together. (Earlier in the year, Roswell Park employees donated $11,000 to FeedMore WNY.) In addition, and in partnership with MIX 1080 WUFO and Power 96.5, Roswell Park collected and distributed 110 turkeys to the families of students at PS #53 Community School on Roehrer Avenue. In December, a life-size sleigh appeared in the lobby of the Roswell Park hospital as the centerpiece of a toy drive for families across Western New York. Employees donated 2,500 toys, which were added to more than 200 boxes of toys from Fisher-Price and additional donations from the Buffalo Fire Department. The gifts, which filled more than 20 pallets, were distributed to area children with the help of 20 community agencies and centers all over Buffalo.

Mayor Appoints Phillip Dabney To City Court

ayor Byron Brown appointed Phillip Dabney Jr. as a Buffalo City Court Judge on December 31.

"Mr. Dabney is a knowledgeable, fair and skilled lawyer. Throughout his years of public service and experience in private practice, he has demonstrated a deep commitment to community, and a belief in justice for all. I am confident that Mr. Dabney will be a leader in our continuing pursuit of a more equitable and just City of Buffalo as a City Court Judge," said Brown.”

Dabney, Jr. Begins Tenure On the first day of Judge Phillip Dabney Jr.’s tenure as Buffalo City Court Judge, he refletced on being appointed by Mayor Brown and sworn-in by Chief Judge Craig Hannah at City Hall on New Year’s Eve. Dabney took the oath of office on his late-father’s bible, held by his wife Crystal Rodriguez-Dabney. Dabney’s mother, Jessie May Dabney, and his children attended the socially distanced ceremony.

Judge Dabney has more than 15 years of legal experience which includes service to the community as a litigator, criminal defense attorney, and prosecutor. Dabney was born and raised in the Trinidad neighborhood of Buffalo’s East Side. He is the oldest in a family of six siblings and a proud graduate of Bennett High School, Canisius College, and the University at Buffalo Law School.

His commitment to advocacy, justice and equity began at an early age, nurtured by his father’s ministry. As a child, Phil loved engaging in philosophical and theological conversations with his father and grandfather, both beloved pastors of Church of God in Christ in local churches.

Dabney also credits his high school sophomore English teacher, Paul S. Feinstein for inspiring in him the confidence to pursue a legal education. Phil had not imagined that a kid who looked like him could successfully manage academic rigors of earning a law degree. It was Mr. Feinstein who directed Phil academically, placing him in several

advanced placement courses. Mr. Feinstein would later write Phil's letter of recommendation for law school.

After graduating from Bennett High School, Phil achieved his first degree from Erie County Community College as he supported his young family while attending college and earning an Associate of Arts degree in paralegal studies, only to be followed by his undergraduate education at Canisius College, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy.

It was during this time that Phil and his first wife unexpectedly lost their seventeen-month-old son, Phillip Brandon Dabney, affectionately known as Philby. Phil and his first wife worked hard to care for each other and their children, Tia and Jeremy, in the wake of their heartbreaking loss.

Phil entered law school in 1999, and worked at a retail store as he pursued his education at the University at Buffalo Law School in 2000, as he continued to provide for his family. He graduated in 2002 and went on to build a successful legal career which has included serving as Assistant District Attorney in Niagara County in, an administrative law judge with various New York State

Chief Judge Craig Hannah took the opportunity to thank Mayor Brown "for having the foresight to appoint such a diverse bench.

WavyKid Kev: Full Time Teen Barber is a Cut Above the Rest!

igh school seniors face a wave of emotions and COVID-19 makes matters worse.

But 17-year-old Kevin Northington - popularly known as ”WavyKid Kev” knows a lot about waves - as in “hair” that is!

He also knows a lot about focus and determination.

Currently an honor student at Burgard High School, basketball team captain, and viral well known Youtube sensation, Kevin is one of the youngest and hottest barbers in WNY. He is also a member of the Raising a Mogul Community and a brand ambassador for companies like 3 Kings Merch & Swagga Hair Care just to name a few.

When former President Barack Obama was featured in a famous photo titled “Hair Like Mine,” it showed a five-year-old Black boy touching President Obamas hair, proving that hair can send a powerful message.

false perceptions people may have about waves, and I am working to change that narrative,” said Northington, a full-time barber at Al’s Unisex Hair Design at 1849 Genesse Street where he currently works under owner Al Parks.

The waves hairstyle for Black men and women uses curls to highlight the spiral around the head. Waves, he explains, takes patience, planning, and persistence.

Kevin has all three covered.

Black men enjoy a variety of hairstyles from short cuts to twists and dreads. Waves is one of the most popular.

He shared that he was always eager to learn, from Pre-K all the way through 8th grade.

He grew up in Buffalo, attended school in South Buffalo, and was well aware that he was in the minority as he struggled to connect with his fellow students. His father Anthony Collins provided him with guidance and

love during this tough time.

After frustrations with his hairstyle, Kevin wanted to make a change, “When I was 12 years old I had a Mohawk and wanted to work on getting waves so I got a short haircut,” he said. His two brothers Alex Collins and Anthony Collins Jr., encouraged him to follow his passion. With support and a family willing to allow him to train on their heads, Kevin started learning about different hairstyles and hair cutting techniques.

“I got better cutting my own hair, so I started on my brother and dad, and kept focusing on my waves," he said.

At 14 years old he was on track to be a self-taught barber. He researched what tools he would need and asked his mom to buy him clippers.

“I got an Oster Fast Feed and a corded T Outliner,” he said. Due to good maintenance and persistence Kevin still uses the same clippers.

Meanwhile he worked on his waves nonstop, brushing and wearing a do-rag, in an effort to improve the quality.

After building his confidence, Kevin wanted to showcase his talent and started his own social media pages : YouTube (Wavy Kid Kev) – Instagram (WAVYKID_KEV) – Facebook (KUTSBYKEVLLC).

Kevin earned a NYS barbers license within two weeks of turning seventeen.

He obtained a drivers license and bought his own car in order to keep up with his steady list of clients. As a high school senior, he understands that COVID-19 has created a unique senior year experience that no one could have predicted. Kevin continues to focus on his goals.

COVID-19 delayed an event he planned through his nonprofit “Waving Hope to my Community” - where barbers and youth could celebrate waves and unique hairstyles in a positive safe space. He hasn’t given up on the idea.

Waving Hope also partnered with Kuts by Kev LLC for its support for their 1st annual Holiday Toy Giveaway.

Unapologetically Imperfect: NaTania B. Parker Launches A Brand With Purpose

lthough it’s never a smooth road to arrive at divine inspiration, Dancer NaTania B. Parker found hers facing an unexpected storm of challenges to start not only a fresh new brand in the face of adversity but also her legacy.

Growing up with a very supportive family and active childhood, NaTania , the daughter of Desiree Parker and the late Don Allen Jr., explored interests in sports, pageantry, martial arts and dance. Dance was the one activity that stuck. She was even winner of the Young Miss Buffalo Pageant and by the time she entered college she found herself venturing into Musical Theatre, dancing acting and singing. The stage was her oasis.

“My family wanted the world for me, and I took that on.” Said NaTania Coming out of college straight into challenges of knee surgery and two years recovery, she was accepted into the American Musical and Dramatic Academy that was followed by the pandemic, the loss of her father, car theft and being involved in a car accident.

“All of this happening while I was enrolled full time in school with a 10-12 class course load. This is not to mention the adversity that came with COVID, live performance and Broadway being shut down, etc. I give so much credit to God, my family, friends and teachers for really helping me keep it together through it all. “she told Voyage LA magazine in 2020. “ I know that I had two options, to succumb to the depression of it all or use it as a springboard to jump into the next phase of my life.”

And so she jumped, and the next phase would be the NaTania B Parker Brand that she launched starting with a line of merchandise specializing in activewear and cute comfort clothing. “You can wear them to the gym or throw some heels and nice accessories on for a night out. The best part about my company is that all the designs are created by me.”

She has plans for the brand and its beyond just cute clothing.

“I was inspired to brand myself, both as an artist and beginning to create my legacy.

The NaTania B Parker brand right now is my merchandise line, but it will go on to be the name stamped on everything I’m involved in from performing, to teaching, to producing, and eventually to my foundation to give more artistic opportunities to underprivileged kids, mainly from my hometown.” She continued “My biggest theme is being unapologetically imperfect. It took some time, but I am so secure and confident in who I am, and I wish that kind of peace on everyone in this world.

Dr. Umar also holds degrees in education and political science. And as a child therapist, he works with depressed and behaviorally-challenged males.

He is founder and president of the National Independent Black Parent Association (NIBPA) organized to fight against educational and academic racism.

Dr. Umar is currently working on building his new school, The Frederick Douglass & Marcus Garvey RBG International Leadership Academy for Boys, America's first residential academy for Black boys founded upon the principles of PanAfrikanism and International Economics.

Erie County, NY — The 4-H Program of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Erie County welcomes all young people ages 13 to 18 in Erie County to join the 4-H Teen Ambassadors. The mission of the Teen Ambassador program is to build confidence, develop life skills, teach leadership and promote teamwork. In 2021, the 4-H Teen Ambassadors are leading a project focused on our local food system that aims to bring the 4-H community together. As part of this group, teens will earn service hours by supporting Erie County 4-H events like the Erie County Fair and 4-H Public Presentation Day. They will also have fun getting to know other young people from across the county. Applications can be found at http://erie.cce.cornell.edu/4-h-youth-development. Teens not already enrolled in Erie County 4-H will need to complete a 4-H application to participate.

Council Member Nowakowski Sponsors Virtual Assemblies with Young Audiences and the Harriet Tubman School Students at the Harriet Ross Tubman School hosted three virtual performances last month with assistance from Young Audiences and Fillmore District Council Member Mitch Nowakowski. Two virtual assemblies were held, including one for PK-3rd grade and another for 4th grade-8th grade.

Additionally, Young Audiences will provide residency workshops for the Music and Art Classes. Each grade level will receive a 4-5 week residency with dance and visual artists during the Music and Art Classes.

“Funding arts programs for our public schools is crucial to a well rounded education,” said Fillmore District Council Member Mitch Nowakowski. “I am proud to partner with Young Audiences to make sure that, even during this global pandemic, children in Buffalo Public Schools have an opportunity to experience and participate in arts and cultural activities.”

Rice, 12, was shot and killed outside of a recreation center by then-Cleveland police Officer Timothy Loehmann, who authorities said mistook a black, toy airsoft pistol for a real firearm. The death of Rice, who was Black, in November 2014 grew to exemplify the allegations of excessive use of force by police that have defined the Black Lives Matter movement.

Minnesota Residents Speak Out Against Whites-Only Church Earlier in December, The Root reported that in Murdock, Minn.—a small city of around 280 residents—white nationalist group Asatru Folk Assembly was granted permission via city council vote to turn an abandoned Lutheran church into a whites-only church for worshipers Well now, only weeks later, members of the community and others are speaking out against the church and they’re making it clear that racism is not welcome in their town. According to NBC News, people collected 50,000 signatures on an online petition to stop the group and their church from calling Murdock home.

Asatru Folk Assembly has been designated by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a hate group. According to NBC, the SPLC said the group masks its “bigotry in baseless claims of bloodlines grounding the superiority of one’s white identity.”

Mr. Arthur passed away Christmas Day following a lengthy illness at age 87. He was buried January 2, 2021 at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Bills Continue to Blow out Opponents by Squishing the Fish 56 – 26 Buffalo Bills 2020 NFL season has turned out to be a record setting one offensively and now the team has emerged a serious Super Bowl contender.

The Bills, playing their best football of the year, finished the season 13-3. Josh Allen became the first player in NFL History with at least 4,500 passing yards, 35 touchdown passes, and five rushing touchdowns in a single season. The Bills season scoring total of 501 points surpassed the previous mark of 458 set in 1990 – 1991. They scored 28 points off turnovers against the Dolphins which is the most by any team in the NFL 2020 season. These records tell us that the entire Bills team is hitting on all cylinders at the right time.

The Bills slot receiver, Isaiah McKenzie , starting in place of injured Cole Beasley, stepped up with a 3-touchdown performance with one coming on a punt return. McKenzie said: “I’ve been watching Beasley, Brown, and Diggs on how to improve my route running each week and knowing I have the skills to do it. Once I see them do it, it gives me the confidence to do it myself. They are always encouraging me to be the best I can be and that’s what you saw on the field.”

The Bills offensive lineman Dion Dawkins: “We have a mindset that we go out to win by playing a physical game and played with our foot on the gas. Our Coaches know what they are doing and put the best players out there to win. We handle business and that’s our purpose. We are going to run it and pass the ball. This is what you’re going to get when you play us.”

Bills defensive linemen Quinton Jefferson, Vernon Butler, Jr., and Ed Oliver are playing at a very high level; stopping the run and forcing opposing quarterbacks to release the ball early. They are the unsung heroes on the defensive front , contributing to a winning season. T his team does not have high profile stars on it like the 90’s Bills - Bruce Smith, Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas, and Andre Reed. Instead, it’s a combination of role players working together for the same goal and it has produced a 13-3 season with Super Bowl LV aspirations. This team developed during a pandemic without fans in attendance and Zoom meetings with media and very little interaction with fans. It has turned into a very special football season in Western New York. Bills Special Teams Coach Heath Farwell unit has performed very well all season long. He must be given credit for having a unit that gives good drive starts for the offense without being penalized.

The Bills punt returner Andre Roberts leads the league in punt return yardage and has made the Pro Bowl two years in a row. That’s a serious testament to what a fine job Special Teams Coach Heath Farwell has been doing with this unit.

Buffalo Bills Head Coach Sean McDermott, when asked about teams over all discipline said, “It’s an everyday approach and to place value on discipline the guys, coaches and position Coaches all work on it; because it’s hard to win when you beat yourself.”

The Bills will play The Indianapolis Colts on Saturday at Bills Stadium. I think it’s a good matchup for The Bills and I see our defense forcing Colts QB Phillip Rivers into at least two turnovers and the offense continuing to put pressure on a good Colts defense leading to another big passing day for Josh Allen. Keep an eye on Colts running back Jonathan Taylor getting off early in the game and Bills defensive front must find a way to slow him down. The key will be putting pressure on statue QB Phillip Rivers, forcing him into those turnovers. Josh Allen must show his maturity in the win and not be reckless with the football. The Bills will go as far as Josh Allen’s arm is going to take them and this week it should take the eam to a 31 -21 win.

Baseball’s Racist Legacy : Major League Baseball Finally Recognizes ‘Negro Leagues’ : Major League

Baseball first announced on Dec. 9 that it would finally incorporate all of the players, statistics and records from the “Negro Leagues” (NL) into its present-day records. Many said it was about time and that this recognition is long overdue. Both sentiments are justified.

Yet the truth is that this announcement was another reminder of one of the most heinous periods in U.S. history: the segregationist Jim Crow era.

The NL, with over 3,400 Black players, existed from 1920 until 1948. The legendary Jackie Robinson had broken the color barrier of the MLB in 1947 when he signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Andrew “Rube” Foster was founder of the original seven teams in the NL, which grew into multiple professional and semi-professional teams in many states.

Segregationist rules barred these thousands of talented players from joining the mainstream MLB, founded in 1903, which remained all-white. The Black players were forced to play in stadiums where Black and white seating was segregated and were relegated to stay in all-Black hotels and eat in all-Black restaurants while traveling in the Deep South.

The Community Remembers George K. Arthur: Mentor, Activist, Artist, Politician, Statesman and Friend

F

or former Council President James Pitts, the loss of George K. Arthur was especially painful.

They had known each other for some 47 years - before Pitts was even thinking about getting into politics.

“I knew him from our activism in the Fruit Belt,” he recalled. “Out of everybody, George was our favorite because he was always there.”

Mr. Arthur made his transition peacefully on Christmas day at age 87. ”I’m going to miss him," said Pitts.

Their professional relationship began after Jim was hired as a Community Coordinator for the city. Little did he know that would also be his personal entry into politics.

When he decided to run, "the person who supported me outwardly and regardless from that point on was George,” he recalled. “When I first walked thru those doors at City Hall I had a clear understanding of what was happening in the community; but the person who know this stuff (the workings of City government) backwards and forwards was George K. Arthur. George was a master and he became my mentor.”

The Hallmark of successful mentoring he reflected, is when the student reaches a point where they understand all the knowledge and insight they can get from their mentor, and that mentor then starts listening to them.

As time went on, he said, they could communicate just by looking at one another. “We knew each other inside out… and that’s the thing that continued thru the course of our careers and even after we left city government.”

“I don’t’ think there was anybody….who could have known as much about this city and its neighborhoods (and the workings of government) like George,” he said.

He had intimate knowledge about every part of the city, Jim continued. No matter where they ventured he knew names and faces and histories. “George knew them all.”

He was especially and always concerned with lifting up the community Pitts said. “He really wanted to build a foundation for recognizing the African American community…for George, the Michigan and Broadway area was Ground zero ."

For example, Arthur worked hard on developing and saving the Nash House…even up to a couple of months ago and they had been in talks about its expansion.

“There was nobody who knew the history of this community like George…he studied it…he lived it…”

What can Black elected official today learn from his example?

“It’s very important for the leadership on the local level to be completely engaged with the community,” said Jim. “George personified that. Even when he retired he stayed involved.”

“George used to hold court at GG’S and Matties and he would always say, 'the community needs to see us working together…unified even if we have differences...the key is to be visible and let the community know you care. We always need to show the community that we’re working for them.”

Over the course of a political career that lasted almost half a century, a Buffalo native George K. Arthur dedicated himself to ensuring equality and promoting unity in a constantly changing city.

Arthur’s public service began in 1964, when he ran for and subsequently won a seat on the Erie County Board of Supervisors. He later served as the Ellicott District Common Council Member from 1970 to 1977. George K. Arthur served as Buffalo Common Council President from 1984 to 1996, and was appointed as a director of the Buffalo Fiscal

In December Buffalo activists displayed various pieces of artwork in front of the Legislative Building at 65 Court St.in Buffalo demanding the passage of the Climate and Community Investment Act (CCIA) in the start of the 2021 NYS legislative session. This action is one in a series of CCIA art actions that took place December 13th to December 15th across New York State.This art action focused on making polluters pay for the harm corporations cause onto communities, people, and the planet for the sake of profit and greed.

Activists also called attention to the need to protect Buffalo from further climate gentrification and degradation, and provided intersectional city, county and state solutions to address these harms.

Stability Authority in 2007, where he was still serving until illness George served as the lead plaintiff in Arthur v. Nyquist, a federal suit that brought to an end segregation and unequal resources in Buffalo schools that spanned from 1981 to 1996.

George has worked with many groups like the NAACP, The Colored Musicians Club, and the Michigan Street Preservation Corp, where he was instrumental in preserving the home and archives of Rev. J. Edward Nash, Sr., as the Nash House Museum. He is featured on the Freedom Wall commissioned

by Albright-Knox Art Gallery.

He was an active member of The American Legion No. 430 and Prince Hall Free and Accepted Masons, St. John Lodge No. 16 and was Grand Inspectors General of Bison Consistory No. 29, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Mason, Prince Hall Affiliate.

George was often found in the community with a camera around his neck as he was a passionate photographer. He spearheaded an annual reunion of the Pine Grill Nightclub from the 1950s and 1960s, along with the late Agnes Bain, both always enjoying the music and the crowds. He was Honorably discharged from the United States Army as a Corporal.

George is survived by his wife, Frances (Bivens), three children Hugh (Linda) Arthur, Janice (William) Towns, and George Jr; Grandchildren: Stacey, Dominique, George III, Ashtyn and Jasmine.

Funeral services were held privately at the convenience of the family. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery.

We also appreciate the comments by Republican Legislator John Mills, who spoke out in favor of HALT. I am personally thankful, after spending more than seven years in solitary myself, that our local legislators were courageous, empathetic and progressive enough to support an end to the torture of people in Erie County jails,... and in prisons across New York State. Hopefully now we can put an end to this chamber of living death," said Wright.

More of the Community Needs to be Involved in the Next Buy Black Buffalo Week

Dear Editor: I was curious as to why Lion Blyden and his UNIA Black Business App was not included in the planning process for Buffalo Black business Week.

When I inquired about it the person I contacted t said she was unaware of who Mr. Blyden was and not familiar with his app. I shared with her a link to the app as well as a bit of history in reference to t he UNIA as being one of the oldest Black organizations . It was founded by Honorable. Marcus Garvey to unify the diaspora of Black people. I truly feel this organization should be involved in planning , along with the NAACP, Urban League, and local NSBE chapters, to effectively fuel advancement of the Black community and to address other systemic issues. Also, Pam James, the Business Development officer for CAO of WNY can assist with referencing Black Businesses for the grand occasion that has been organized to support Black Businesses.

I think the campaign that was supplied is a great start, but more of our community needs to come together to optimize the effectiveness of the campaign to buy locally from Black Businesses .

It would be greatly appreciated if there was more transparency in regards to the future of the campaign to inform others of how they can participate and influence its growth.

Corrupt, Criminal Agenda Against The Homeless Community Of Buffalo New York

, Kelvin Seay (Buffalo nNew York born and raised) have been a member of the Homeless Community of Buffalo New York since January 2020. I 'm bringing to your awareness the corrupt criminal agenda of government public officials (Federal,State and Local), property owners, businesses, the local theater and arts community,the local media,fraudulent agencies/organizations and the collective churches at large of Buffalo against The Homeless Community Of Buffalo New York.

Throughout this experience I have seen the onslaught of neglect, oppression exploitation and cruel barbaric mistreatment towards myself and many others within this community. The makeshift homeless shelters (Lincoln Field House- 10 Quincy St, Holy Cross Church- Niagara and Maryland, Harbor House-Genesee and Michigan Ave.) along with the Restoration Society Inc.(Englewood Ave.) and The Empowerment Academy (Elm And Michigan Ave.) Marshaun L. Quinniey are under the umbrella of the .Department of Housing And Homeless Services. Up to 70 homeless residents only can receive shelter on any given day. These facilities do not provide showers. Residents must go to a facility across town to take a shower and wash clothes.

The homeless are dictated to regarding meal times (hours apart) and then given small rations with little if any nutritional value. The staffing of these facilities are blatantly and extremely disrespectful to residents i.e. talking loud while residents try to sleep, taking donations for themselves, watching television on residents time, talking on phones to outsiders about conversation not job related and using desktops for shopping browsing while residents are put "The other day… the 82-year-old hands that used to pick somebody else's cotton picked her on hold with specific needs. BACK HISTORY continued from page 3 is an important tourist attraction, the former home of the Rev. J. Edward Nash Sr., pastor of the Michigan Avenue Baptist Church from 1892 to 1953. Nash was also one of the early personalities involved in the Niagara Movement and founding of the NAACP, and one of the most widely known and respected African-Americans by both Blacks and the city’s white leadership back in the day.

Across the street, you will find the Colored Musician’s Club of Buffalo, N.Y., which came into being because of the segregationists practices of the day. It was here that members of the all-Black musicians Buffalo Local 533, formed in 1917, established their own identity as a result of being excluded from the sole, all-white Buffalo musicians union.

Despite Prohibition and the Great Depression, the club was able to serve as a transportation hub for the Black community with music, top national acts, venues and entertainers, including Louis Armstrong, John Coltrane, Dizzie Gillespie, Lena Horne, Duke Ellington, Art Blakey, Miles Davis, Gene and Albert Ammons and many other jazz legends, while simultaneously providing a social gathering place for this historic Black community.

Today, visitors to this designated Historical Landmark can enjoy performances by local, regional and national jazz, blues, swing and other acts, open jam sessions, upstairs in the original club.

The lower level has been transformed into a fabulous new museum that opened in 2013, featuring music memorabilia, historic photographs and more.

Ceiling Fans Are Recalled After Blades Detach More than 190,000 ceiling fans sold at The Home Depot have been recalled after it was found that their blades could detach while spinning, causing injuries and property damage.

The Hampton Bay 54-inch Mara Indoor/Outdoor fans were sold in stores and online from April through October this year, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. About 182,000 of the fans were sold in the United States and about 8,800 were sold in Canada, it said.

There have been 47 reports of blades detaching from the fans. Two of those episodes involved the detached blades hitting people, and there have been four reports of the blades causing property damage. It was unclear if the people hit by the blades had been injured.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission said the recall involved fans in matte white, matte black, black and polished nickel finishes.

It instructed consumers to immediately stop using the fans, adding that if they notice “blade movement or uneven gaps between the blades and fan body,” they should contact the distributor of the fans, King of Fans, for a free replacement.

Honor A Veteran With A Brick At The Nation’s First African American Veterans Monument

H

onor a veteran or active-duty military servicemember with a commemorative brick at the African American Veterans Monument.

To be located at the Buffalo & Erie County Naval and Military Park, the Monument is the first in the nation to recognize the contributions of African Americans who have served and are currently serving in all five branches of the military, during war and in peace times.

“What many may not realize is that African Americans have fought in all 12 of the United States’ military conflicts since the country’s first, whether they enlisted voluntarily or were drafted,” said Warren Galloway, African American Veterans Monument Committee Chair.

“We hope everyone will use this holiday season as an opportunity to recognize the men and women in their life who have fought for our freedom and ability to enjoy this time of year with loved ones.”

The design of the African American Veterans Monument will boast 12 black 10-foot concrete pillars that represent each of the country’s 12 military conflicts. The ground surface will feature custom bricks, with a design that is reminiscent of the dog tags that military personnel proudly adorn on the battlefield.
