Buffalo Board of Ethics Meeting

Set: Open to The Public!

The City of Buffalo Board of Ethics review will be holding a Board of Ethics meeting Thursday, July 27 at 1 p.m. at Buffalo City Hall, 65 Niagara Square, Room 1417.

This meeting is open to the public. For questions or further information regarding this meeting please contact the Common Council Staff Office by phone at (716) 851-5105 or email at councilstaff@buffalony.gov.

Responding to an Investigative Post report, Mayor Byron Brown and the Common Council reactivated the city's dormant ethics board last September after being inactive for two and a half years.

According to the city charter, the ethics board is charged with investigating violations of the city’s code of ethics and monitoring potential conflicts of interest for city employees, including elected officials. It has the power to subpoena documents and testimony, though there is no record of it having used that authority

Small Business Owners, Concerned Citizens, Share Their Struggles and Concerns During Council Hearings Regarding the Braymiller Market Funding Issue Council Delays Vote On The Matter Again

There were a few people who spoke in full support of the council voting to bail out Braymiller Market to the tune of $562,000 during Tuesday’s Finance Committee meeting in the Common Council.

Some sat on the fence.

Most were clearly against it.

And Council members Darius Pridgen, in whose district the controversy and the market lies, along with Finance chairman Chair University district Rasheed Wyatt stood firm and showed uncompromising compassion for and commitment to the city’s small business community.

In the end no action was taken, leaving the administration with another week to convince council members to support an initiative that has laid bare the kind of inequity and politicking that has become synonymous with this administration for almost two decades.

Community activist and former council member Betty Jean Grant said her business has been consistently ignored over the years by elected officials.

“I’m not saying that Braymiller should not get the money, but those who have been here and supported this city when it was…not viable…we stayed…all races, creeds and colors, but nobody is advocating for us and everyone needs help…the people at Braymiller did not vote for you. Take care of your own before you take care of someone else!” she said.

One business owner said he agreed that a grocery store downtown was a good idea, “but no one asked for a food warehouse downtown,.”

“Don’t understand why BURA wants to help Braymiller so much… BURA and council members and other city hall departments need to help small businesses for… many reasons… ..$562,000 for one business? It’s simply unfair…to the residents and business owners in Buffalo…I don’t understand why it’s even a request to bail out Braymillers. ”

A Grant Street business owner whose family has been in business since 1961, said the Ferry Grant district is dying and desperately in need of help. He said they have been turned down twice for funding and they were in great need of help.

A few of the young community business owners said they had no idea what funding sources were available, and one long standing entrepreneur said he had applied but was denied, which raised questions about the application guidelines.

“I’m ready to leave town,” lamented a former business owner who once had a thriving uniform store in the Main Place Mall. “I just can’t do business here.”

“I was here when we had the first discussions about Braymiller,” lamented Denise Barr. “We’ve done this already…we were here already and had a full blown conversation and made a decision (not to fund it) and here we are again! When Ciminelli says ‘I will give you $500,000 if the city gives you $560,000’ that makes me wonder what condition is their business really in?”

Ellicott District resident Archie Brooks has taken the issue a step further. He said that he’s been researching and found that there are full fledged grocery stores who would be willing to come into the city, and that he plans to share his findings with Council member Pridgen.

Lovejoy District Council member pointed out that two business people from his district - representing Miss Goodies’ Restaurant and Kern’s Bowling – were there to share their concerns. He said the session was good, and that it confirmed that the needs of the small businesses in his district clearly matter.

“I’m glad that’s the path we’re moving toward (equity)and that’s where I would support this vote moving forward.”

“I’m still concerned,” said Pridgen. He said he wants to see the same energy and commitment

Cancer Warning: Avoid Aspartame If You Possibly Can!

A committee of 25 international experts has determined that aspartame may "possibly" cause cancer in people, according to a report released recently by the World Health Organization.

This new classification, which is based on a review of "limited evidence," is for "high consumers" of diet soda or other foods that contain aspartame. "But the red flag has been raised and more research is called for.

Meanwhile back at the USA Ranch where cancer rates continue to soar, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration says it disagrees with WHO’S classification, pointing to evidence of safety. In a written statement, an FDA official told NPR that aspartame being labeled by the WHO "as 'possibly carcinogenic to humans' does not mean that aspartame is actually linked to cancer."

Really? Better safe than sorry.!

So in addition to the cancer warning, WHO also advised against using artificial sweeteners for weight control, saying a review of studies did not show long-term benefit in reducing body fat in children or adults. The review also suggested that the sweeteners were tied to an increased risk of Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

This year, researchers at North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill released a study that found a chemical formed after digesting another sweetener, sucralose, breaks up DNA and may contribute to health problems. Aspartame may also cause headaches, seizures and depression, some studies have shown. Follow the Money

Most food and beverage companies that use aspartame are reluctant to switch partly because aspartame is less expensive than other alternatives and is 200 times as sweet as sugar, meaning a little goes a very long way.

And above all, manufacturers don’t want to lose consumers, who are “loyal” (addicted?) to the taste, considering the fact that in 2020, the US retail diet carbonated soft drink market hit $11.2 billion dollars.

-Become an Avid Label ReaderHere are some common foods and beverages that contain aspartame:

• Zero-sugar or diet sodas, including Diet Coke

• Sugar-free gums, such as Trident gum

• Diet drink mixes, including Crystal Light

• Reduced-sugar condiments, such as Log Cabin Sugar Free Syrup

• Sugar-free gelatin like Sugar-free Jell-O

• Tabletop sweeteners sold under brand names including Equal and Nutrasweet

On July 9 hundreds gathered in the Canisius Spillman Lot at the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Florida Street for the second Buffalo Still Standing concert. The event was organized by the Upper Room Church of God in Christ (COGIC) Food Pantry in partnership with Canisius College and Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York. Buffalo Still Standing is a high-energy outdoor community event featuring inspirational music and dance performances by local and national acts. The event began last year in response to the May 14 shooting at the Jefferson Avenue Tops Market. It promotes joy, healing, and resilience on Buffalo's eastside.

Following last year's shooting massacre, The Upper Room Church of God in Christ Food Pantry increased operating days and hours to accommodate the overwhelming need for nutritious foods for families and community members affected by the closing of the only major neighborhood grocery store. After weeks of collective anguish, members of the food pantry created Buffalo Still Standing to feed the community in another way that would encourage them.

Entertainment “Educate Your Ear…Listen to Jazz!”

28th Annual Pappy Martin Legacy Masten Jazz Festival Sunday July 23 and Sunday July 30!

In 1996, inspired by the Nation of Islam’s historic Million Man March in Washington, D.C. when one million Black men were given the charge to return home and create something to improve their communities, James “Pappy” Martin came up with the idea to start a festival which would perpetuate the culture of the world recognized art form, jazz.

He collaborated with then Council member Byron Brown, Darryl Peebles, Council President James Pitts and Steve Porter to implement an innovative community enhancement program entitled the Masten Jazz Festival. It’s goal was to introduce an event that would highlight the contribution of jazz in the archives of international history and culture and they were committed to keeping the festival in the heart of the city... and free...so that it is accessible to everyone.

Yusef Salaam Member of the Exonerated “Central Park Five” Wins Harlem Democratic Primary

Yusef

Salaam, a member of the exonerated “Central Park Five,” has officially won the Democratic primary for a seat on the New York city council. Salaam had a significant lead over his opponents, New York Assembly members Inez Dickens and Al Taylor, for the nomination to represent Council District 9 in Central Harlem. His win in the Democratic primary should assure him of a win for the seat in the general election in a heavily Democratic district.

Salaam gained national attention after he and four other Black and brown teenagers were wrongly accused of raping and beating a White female jogger in 1989. They were tried, convicted and sentenced to multi-year terms in prison. They served between 5 and 12 years in prison before a confession from the real culprit caused prosecutors to look into the case again. DNA evidence proved that they were not guilty, and their convictions were vacated in 2002.

The city of New York eventually agreed to a settlement of $41 million in total with the five.

Tyler Perry Makes History As 1st Black To Acquire 2 Major TV Networks

In a major development for the entertainment industry, BET has become Blackowned once again after 21 years, while VH1, for the first time, now boasts an African American owner.

Last month Tyler Perry has cemented his place in history by acquiring the two major television networks, making him the first African American to do so. Perry, who had already enjoyed tremendous success in collaboration with BET, partnering with his Tyler Perry Studios banner to create the popular streaming service BET+, was no stranger to the network.

NEWS UPDATE

Help All Small Businesses Not Just Braymiller!

On Tuesday, July 18th, the Buffalo Common Council Finance Committee met to consider Mayor Byron Brown's request to give Braymiller Market a $562, 000.00 forgivable loan/grant to assist them in remaining open. Although this initiative was supported by a few residents who spoke, the majority of the speakers, owners of small businesses themselves, felt that all struggling Buffalo Businesses needed the same opportunity that Braymiller was getting. Many of the Council Members, who are on the finance committee, felt the same way. They voted to send Braymiller's request to the full council meeting on Tuesday, July 25th where it will be either approved, referred back to the Finance Committee or voted down.

To sweeten the opportunity for passage, the city administrators have found a pot of resources amounting to 3 million dollars in grant monies and 2 million dollars in loans to help out other struggling small businesses in Buffalo. This Braymiller's assistance push by the Mayor will probably be approved at this July 25th meeting as the Buffalo Common Council goes on August Recess until September 5th, after this last session.

I want to thank Council member Rasheed NC Wyatt for holding the Finance Committee meeting on July 18th and for voicing his support for funding for the other struggling small businesses in Buffalo. Council member Wyatt was adamant in his decision that his vote for Braymiller hinged on other businesses in Buffalo receiving the same opportunity for financial assistance.

But my ' hat' goes completely off to Council President and Ellicott District Council member, Darius G. Pridgen . He fought for the other businesses in Buffalo to be included like the warrior and people's champion he has always been. We, the residents of the City of Buffalo, will miss his wise and informed stewardship of the Buffalo Common Council over the past years, after he leaves the Buffalo Common Council on December 31, 2023.

The last, official meeting of the Buffalo Common Council, before Recess, is next Tuesday, at 2 PM, in council chambers, 13th Fl..Please be in attendance but be sure to call your Council member if you are a business owner and need financial assistance.

To find out who your Council member is, please call the city's 311 number. Good luck and I shall see you in the Buffalo Common Council Chambers next week.

BRAYMILLER continued from page 3

for small businesses “if the administration is serious about helping them.”

He said he was also concerned about the changes Braymiller was supposed to have made in their business model. And he added he wants everything in writing.

Council member Pridgen striking a note of caution, and said that before he changes his vote he has to be assured that fairness, equity and transparence prevail and ha small business are treated equally.

He called Brown out for “campaigning for Braymiller,” and hosting a “cash mob for the store” complete with a press conference. That’s also where Ciiminelli made the announcement to invest the additional $500,000 if the city approved the $560,000.

“It shouldn't have taken this Braymiller (issue) for us to be doing the right thing for the businesses in our city,” concluded Wyatt, “The mayor is campaigning for Braymiller, but (for) the people that are suffering, he says nothing.”

The Council will meet again next Tuesday June 25. Will they vote on whether or not to bail out Braymiller? Stay tuned.

MartinSostre (1923-2015) was a Black political prisoner, jailhouse lawyer, of Puerto Rican descent. He has been an inspiration to many current and formerly incarcerated individuals involved in revolutionary organizing. This year marks the 100-year commemoration of his birth. -Buffalo Connection-

Martin served time in Attica prison during the early 1960s, where he embraced doctrines as diverse as Black Muslimism, Black nationalism, Internationalism, and finally anarchism. In 1966 Sostre opened the first Afro-Asian Bookstore at 1412 Jefferson in Buffalo, New York. For its somewhat short existence, Sostre's bookstore was a center for radical thought and education in Buffalo's Black community. As Sostre details:

"I taught continually - giving out pamphlets free to those who had no money. I let them sit and read for hours in the store. Some would come back every day and read the same book until they finished it. This was the opportunity I had dreamed aboutto be able to help my people by increasing the political awareness of the youth."

Sostre and his coworker, Geraldine Robinson, were arrested, at his bookstore on July 14, 1967, for "narcotics, riot, arson, and assault," charges later proven to be fabricated, part of a COINTELPRO program. He was convicted and sentenced to serve forty-one years and thirty days. Sostre became a jailhouse lawyer, regularly acting as legal counsel to other inmates and winning two landmark legal cases involving prisoner rights: Sostre v. Rockefeller and Sostre v. Otis. According to Sostre, these decisions constituted "a resounding defeat for the establishment who will now find it exceedingly difficult to torture with impunity the thousands of captive Black (and White) political prisoners illegally held in their concentration camps."

Sostre was placed in solitary confinement for more than 5 years. In earlier legal activity, Sostre secured religious rights for Black Muslim prisoners and also eliminated (in the words of Federal Judge Constance Motley) some of the more "outrageously inhuman aspects of solitary confinement in some of the state prisons." He was responsible for de-legitimatizing censorship of inmates' mail, invasive bodily exams, and penal solitary confinement

In December 1973 Amnesty International put Sostre on its "prisoner of conscience" list, stating: "We became convinced that Martin Sostre has been the victim of an international miscarriage of justice because of his political beliefs ... not for his crimes ."

In addition to numerous defense committees in New York State, a Committee to Free Martin Sostre, made up of prominent citizens, joined in an effort to publicize Sostre's case and petition the New York Governor Hugh Carey for his release. On December 7, 1975, Russian Nobel Peace Laureate Andrei Sakharov added his name to the clemency appeal. Governor Carey granted Sostre clemency on Christmas Eve of 1975. Sostre was released from prison in February 1976.

He died on August 12, 2015.

In November 2017, the Frank E. Merriweather Jr. Library hosted To and From 1967: A Rebellion with Martin Sostre, an event commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Black rebellion on Buffalo's eastside. The event included an installation created by local eastside artist called Reviving Sostre. The installation consisted of three bookshelves painted by the artists and placed in the lobby of the Merriweather Library, which was built on the same location where Sostre's bookstore used to stand.

Why Is the East Side Hobbed With So Many Speed Bumps?

Dear Editor:

Welcome summer, Buffalo’s road construction season! Mayor Brown’s compulsion to punish us for his brief embarrassment at the ballot box last year began with the removal of drivable traffic lanes and bump-outs and continues to this day. At this current pace by winter every residential street on the Black side of town will be hobbled by block after block of speed bumps.

If Jimmy Griffin had done this to us on his watch we’d still be complaining, and justifiably angry. After the first house fire or the first emergency vehicle not to arrive in time it would be clear to the rational observer what a bad idea this was – and is.

Maybe we’ll be “lucky” again this coming winter. Otherwise, just write down Byron Brown.

It’s cleaver and it rhymes.

RESPECT

Dear Editor:

Sincerely. Glen Tate, Buffalo

I told a friend that I would never go to the Asian owned nail salon in the Harlem Road plaza again. She asked why. I said because when I asked the male nail technician where his step-daughter was who helped in the shop, he said that she was “LAYING UP WITH SOME NI!#@A”. I very calmly asked him “Well what kinda ni!#@ga was she laying up with, a Black one, a White one, an Asian one?”

I let him finish my nails and I vowed to NEVER give one more cent of my money to that business.

The same friend who I told this to told me that she went to a different nail salon at first, but it was too crowded. Instead of making the “sacrifice” and driving one block to a different nail salon, she CHOSE to go to the one I warned her about. I told my friend in no uncertain terms that it is largely because of Black people like HER that our race will NEVER have anything. We have a bad habit of always doing what is most “comfortable” and “convenient”.

Just like any other city, Buffalo has a gazillion nail salons, especially where there is a high concentration of Black people. She could have driven up the street to a different nail salon but she CHOSE to go to THAT one even though she KNEW how disrespectful they were. She said, “Well I like the way they do my nails.” I said, “LIKE SOME DAM BODY ELSE”.

As the Editor of the Buffalo Challenger News Alnisa Banks always says:

“DON’T SPEND YOUR MONEY WHERE YOU ARE NOT RESPECTED!!!

Universal Hum

An international consortium of research collaborations has revealed compelling evidence for the existence of a low-pitch hum of gravitational waves reverberating across the universe. These gravitational waves are the collective echo of pairs of supermassive black holes — thousands of them, some as massive as a billion suns, sitting at the hearts of ancient galaxies up to 10 billion lightyears away — as they slowly merge and generate ripples in space-time. -NYT
