This year the theme for the free one-day event, is "ONE LOVE" Enjoy a day of live music, food, vendors, cultural history & displays, activities, health activities/information, and much more. Mayor Evans Declares Gun Violence State of Emergency Last Thursday, July 21, Mayor Malik D. Evans declared a Gun Violence State of Emergency in the City of Rochester in response to a surge in shootings and deadly shootings. “The City and our partners in government will dedicate all possible resources to bring an immediate end to this violence and prevent it from expanding further,” said Rochester Mayor Malik Evans at podium, declaring a gun vioMayor Evans. “We know lence emergency in the City of Rochester. these shootings are directly tied to a deadly cycle of disputes and retaliations and we will do all we can to disrupt these disputes before they reach critical mass.” Just hours after the proclamation, a Rochester police officer was shot and killed and his partner wounded .The slain officer was in a parked vehicle with his partner when 17 rounds were fired into the vehicle from behind, Rochester Police Capt. Frank Umbrino said at a Friday news conference. The two were part of the department’s plainclothes tactical unit and were investigating a murder. Police have arrested and charged a 21-year old man from the Boston, Massachusetts area second-degree murder, attempted murder, assault and weapons counts. -The ProclamationEvans said the city had, before the officer’s death, recorded 41 homicides this year and more than 200 people had been shot. The homicide count was one less than at the same time the previous year. The mayor said recent shootings were “directly tied to a deadly cycle of disputes and retaliations.” The Proclamation gives the Mayor broad powers to protect life and property and to bring the emergency under control. With each 30-day renewal of the Proclamation, the City will continue to assess violence patterns in city neighborhoods to develop and launch a suite of violence-prevention strategies enabled by the expanded authority it provides. These strategies will build upon the work that is already underway across City departments in the areas of violence prevention, intervention and suppression. In addition, Mayor Evans has asked our Federal, State and County partners for further resources to provide more mental health and violence disruption services to actively attack this crisis from all angles. Mayor Evans also implored city residents with information on disputes and criminal activity to come forward and cooperate with police and, or the Office of Violence Prevention Programs. “Our most powerful tool in this fight against violence is information and cooperation from the community,” said Mayor Evans. “It is in times of crisis that we see the true heroes of our community and this is a time of crisis. We need our own local heroes to rise to the occasion. Charles LoTempio, a Rochester police investigator ,suspended with pay earlier this month after a video showed him handcuffing a Black EMT and taking her into custody while she was pushing a paten’s gurney into the emergency department at Strong Memorial Hospital. Since then its been reported that he has been a defendant in five federal lawsuits alleging misconduct between 2012 and 2018. He was previously suspended for use of excessive force and received a reprimand for conducting a strip search without first obtaining a search warrant.

Innovative Home Economist And Advocate For The Underserved, Audrose Mackel Banks, Passes At 93 Audrose Mackel Banks, formerly of Buffalo, recently of Mumford, New York, transitioned into eternal life in Chicago, Illinois on Wednesday, July 6, 2022. The eldest of five children, she was born in Natchez, Mississippi on February 9, 1929, to the late Dr. Audley Maurice Mackel, Sr. & Rosetta Lloyd Mackel. She lived in Natchez, and briefly in Monroe, LA, until adulthood, after which she resided in Philadelphia, PA, and Rochester and Buffalo, New York. Later, she moved with her husband of 55 years, the late Charles JL Banks, to his hometown of Mumford, where she became a beloved and respected resident while Audrose Mackel Banks actively enjoying life with family, friends, and neighbors. She was an active member of Mumford’s historic Second Baptist Church. Mrs. Banks earned a BS in Home Economics from Bennett College in Greensboro, NC, and a MS in Home Economics and Adult Education from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. She did postgraduate study at SUNY-Buffalo, Cornell University, The University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, and Southern Illinois University. During her career, she served as an Extension Home Economist with the Erie County, New York State, and Cornell University Cooperative Extension Departments. Mrs. Banks received numerous awards and citations as an adult homemaking education professional where she taught and advocated for equal opportunity in housing, financial literacy, and consumer affairs. A private graveside service will be held at her final resting place, Natchez City Cemetery in Natchez, MS. A virtual memorial celebration of her life will take place in September. "And I want to especially thank Mr. Peter Reese," she added Reese the seasoned attorney who filed an Amicus Brief on Mrs. Grant’s behalf and exposing what he called prosecutorial misconduct. Attorney McLeod said from the beginning that the case was a travesty, and he previously filed motions to have it either resolved or thrown out. “I just regret that it took the District Attorney’s office this long to see what we saw” said McLeod. What happened last Thursday he pointed out, should have happened day one rather than seven months later. “Sometimes the wheels move slow but as long they move in the direction we want them to move in that’s ok.” “All Betty was attempting to do,” said Attorney McLeod, “ was to record for the sake of giving to authorities what was illegal activity …that charge should never have gotten this far.” The women, he continued “wasn’t harassed, wasn’t annoyed and wasn’t alarmed. The case is one that should never have gotten this far but it did. It’s taken a long time, but we got what we were looking for and that’s all that counts.” Mrs. Grant said she just wants to put it all behind her.
ANCIENT MALI Malian sailors from Africa got to America in 1311 AD, 181 years before Columbus. An Egyptian scholar, Ibn Fadl Al-Umari, published on this sometime around 1342. In the tenth chapter of his book, there is an account of two large maritime voyages ordered by the predecessor of Mansa Musa, a king who inherited the Malian throne in 1312. This mariner king is not named by Al-Umari, but modern writers identify him as Mansa Abubakari II. On a pilgrimage to Mecca in 1324 AD, a Malian ruler, Mansa Musa, brought so much money with him that his visit resulted in the collapse of gold prices in Egypt and Arabia. It took twelve years for the economies of the region to normalize.

Nanny’s Nook Celebrates Expansion!
Nanny’s Nook Quality Day Care Center at 1495 Jefferson Avenue is one of the city’s best kept business success secrets on the East side. During an interview with the Challenger last Spring, owner and Director Michelle Frazier enthusiastically shared her vision and expansion plans for the center. Last Wednesday she cut the ribbon to celebrate the completion of those plans which houses a Gross Motor Room (indoor play), Kitchen, classroom, two bathrooms, conference room, main office, storage room, and office (NOOK Foundation). The center's Playground will be reconstructed before the Fall of 2022. On hand to help celebrate the occasion was Erie County Legislature Chairperson the Hon. April Baskin, and Black Achievers CEO Herb Bellamy. Also, Shannon Johnson, Eric Feldstein (M&T Bank), Donna Wilson-Habeeb, Sydney Brown , Kathy Driscoll, and Anne Gorman (Kiddie Corner Childcare Center). Not only are Ms. Frazier’s efforts a plus for those in need of child care, enhancing the building helps instill pride and beautify to the neighborhood, and plays a role in the revitalization of Jefferson Avenue. Hats off to this enterprising young entrepreneur, who opened Nanny’s Nook’s Jefferson Avenue location eight years ago (she’s been in business for a total of 22 years and Nanny’s Nook has an A+ Better Business. Bureau rating). Wrote Michelle on her factbook page regarding completion of the project: "Patience is a virtue. This project has taught me....Not in my time, but HIS! Amen!”

Embracing Buffalo: Four Days of Hope, Healing and Renewal
E
mbracing Buffalo is a collaborative effort between two trios of women healers – three who live in Buffalo, and three who simply love the place that you call, “Home.” It is not only a response to the May 14th shooting– it is an attempt to address the horrors that preceded it, and to serve in addressing the myriad of symptoms that will continue to emerge in the massacre’s painful aftermath. The three in Buffalo are Deidra EmEl, Executive Director of the WNY Peace Center, Buffalonian, doulah, COI; Kathleen Heim, Director of Continuing Education at UB School of Social Work; and Victoria (Vicki, or Victory) Ross, WNY Peace Center Board Chair. The three who love Buffalo and are coming to help in this time of special need are Dena Adler, Family and Art Therapist who works in Rochester as well as Buffalo; Dr. Sabrina N’Diaye, a healer, story-teller, and peacemaker; and Dr. Carol Penn, medical doctor and movement, meditation, and mindset coach who has also danced and choreographed with Alvin Ailey Dance Theater. The trio has specialized in facilitating healing work after mass shootings, including Las Vegas, Houston, the Pine Ridge Reservation, New York City, Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, and the Capitol insurrection. The Embracing Buffalo team understands the emotional, physical, and spiritual toll of service on the servants, survivors, and community. Our intention is to replenish the community, especially those most heavily impacted; and the leaders and healers serving them, contributing to expanding their capacity for continued service to humanity. he Colored Musicians Club and Jazz Museum are taking jazz back to its roots for their 18th annual Queen City Jazz Fest in Downtown Buffalo on Saturday July 30 at the Downtown Public Library Lafayette Square from 1-8pm. With Buffalo having produced some of the world’s best Jazz music for over 105 years, CMC board member George Scott says 87 of those years The Colored Musicians Club has been its home and location of the Queen City Jazz Fest since 2004. With that much tenure it’s no wonder why the lineup this year for Queen City Jazz Fest is a full day of outstanding talent who hail from the City of Buffalo. Headliners hitting the stage include 10time Grammy Award winning group Take6! If you always wanted to hear and see these vocal genius talents live, here’s your chance to experience the most awarded a cappella group in the history of music on the Queen City Jazz Fest stage! With voices emulating the sounds and rhythms of musical instruments, Take6 has awed both jazz and gospel listeners with immaculate harmonies and stirring vocal arrangements. Of its 6 members, Claude McKnight (the oldest of 4 boys including his brother award winning singer Brian McKnight) is a Buffalo born and raised talent who has been with the group since its inception in 1988. He gained his musical influences from his grandfather Fred Willis Sr. who was the choir director at his church. Known as a total package in the music industry, Buffalo born fly girl bassist Zuri Appleby and the Millennial Montage will gear it up with Progressive jazz fusion featuring Zuri Appleby on bass, Arianna Powell on guitar, Timothy Dowdell on Keys, Rod Bonner on keys and Aaron Blackmon on drums. Zuri was awarded Best Jazz Bassist of 2016 in Buffalo and proven the sky has no limit as it relates to her incomparable versatility and countless collaborations. This year’s festival location at Buffalo Public Library in Lafayette Square was chosen due to current renovations underway at the normal 145 Broadway location. A $2.95million renovation project that began earlier this year that will add a well-deserved expansion to the CMC of over 2,000 square feet. The Colored Musicians Club origins date back to 1917, when the only musician’s union in Buffalo, Local 43, refused to admit any African American musicians. A group of Black musicians decided to form a union of their own, Buffalo 533, to make sure Black musicians who came to the City had somewhere to go after they played. The club became the “after spot” for greats like Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Lena Horne and Dizzy Gillespie among many others. Juini Booth, Rick James Stone City Band Inducted into the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame The Buffalo Music Hall of Fame is excited to announce a special television broadcast honoring the Hall of Fame Class of 2021. A one-hour TV special will be aired on July 30, at 12 PM on WKBW Channel 7 ABC. Juini Booth and Rick James’ Stone City Band will be among those inducted and featured in the upcoming special. The late, great Juini Booth, a master jazz bassist, international and world-class musician, was a versatile and widely renowned force on both the acoustic and electric bass. His recording and performing credits read like a who’s who of jazz greats and spanned the spectrum of many jazz styles. Rick James Stone City Band was formed in 1978 by The King of Punk Funk, Rick James. The Stone City Band was Rick's exclusive recording and touring band from the beginning and through the height of his career. They were responsible for hits such as You and I, Super Freak, Mary Jane, Bustin' Out, the Mary Jane Girls All Night Long, Boys, In My House, and more. Additional Hall of Fame inductees include: Edie Lehmann Boddicker, Scott Celani, Steve Fister, Robin Grandin, Bob Leatherbarrow, Richie Merlo (President’s Award) and Maria Sabastian. The 2021 Inductees were officially entered into the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame during a banquet event at the Seneca One Tower and a performance concert at The Cave on December 1 and December 2 of 2021. In order for the Bisons to get back to the top of the East division they will need to put it forth a consistent effort on both ends. This will be a difficult task as Jeff Ware has become the interim manager of the Buffalo Bisons. Recently the Toronto Blue Jays announced that Buffalo Bisons manager Casey Candaele has been promoted to the Blue Jays ball club as interim bench coach. Last week The Buffalo Bisons shut out the Rochester Red Wings 1-0 in their fight back to the top spot in the East. Buffalo Sabres The Buffalo Sabres have been super busy in the offseason as the 2022-2023 NHL season approaches. The Buffalo Sabres this past week moved a plethora of players to new teams.. •Colin Miller was signed by the Dallas Stars on a 2-year $1.85 million contract. •Goalie Dustin Tokarski got a one year, $775,000 contract from the Pittsburgh Penguins. •Goalie Aaron Dell also got a one-year $775,000 contract from the San Jose Sharks. •John Hayden will become a Seattle kraken as he received a one-year $750,000 contract. •Marcus Johansson joined the Washington capitals on a oneyear 1.1 million dollar deal. •The New York Rangers acquired Jaroslav Halak for oneyear, $1.55 million dollar deal. •The Buffalo Sabres also signed a few players as well.... I ended up dated yet excited about being a freshman at East High . with eight of them in basketball, football, and track. Plus, I earned A lot of the people that I looked up to were upper class- three All-High medals and an All-Western New York track honor. One of my most memorable moments was when our class demates already and I knew I wanted to be a part of that pride of going to the City of Buffalo's only all-Black high cided to change the school colors and the mascot. My classmates and I came together in unity and voted to change the colors from school. One of the requirements to be a student at East high blue and gray to black and gold and the mascot to the Black Panschool was you had to dress. I had my first summer job at thers. I remember the excitement at the pep rally when we pre14 and bought my own school clothes for the first time. I miered our new black and gold football uniforms. While in prison, BaBa began to develop a work ethic defined by love and justice. This collection is a testament to his meditations and contemplations. His reflections are sincere, real, and heartfelt, encouraging the reader to stop, for a moment, and think about the things that matter most. His essay on "Critical Resistance" is a thoughtful "call to arms" that urges us to take an in depth look at the systems that have created the social, political, and economic circumstances that define our present condition. According to BaBa, change is possible if we commit ourselves to the unrelenting task of working together to create justice and equity for all. Whether we are examining the educational system or the prison system, there is a justifiable need to dismantle everything and anything that denies anyone's humanity. Our future depends on honoring the Divine in every human being. As an advocate for Restorative Justice, it is no surprise that BaBa concludes his book with a quote from Seba Kheti: "Every day is a donation to eternity and even one hour is a contribution to its future." Coming Soon: A New Dictionary — The Oxford Dictionary of African American English A new dictionary — the Oxford Dictionary of African American English — is a project of Harvard University’s Hutchins Center for African and African American Research and Oxford University Press The dictionary will not just collect spellings and definitions it will also create a historical record and serve as a tribute to the people behind the words, said Henry Louis Gates Jr., the project’s editor in chief and the Hutchins Center’s director. The project was announced in June, and the first version is expected in three years. “Just the way Louis Armstrong took the trumpet and turned it inside out from the way people played European classical music,” said Gates, Black people took English and “reinvented it, to make it reflect their sensibilities and to make it mirror their cultural selves.”
Mississippi Police Chief Boasted "Shot That N-Word 119 Times," According To Leaked Recording On Wednesday, white Mississippi police chief Sam Dobbins was fired after a recording leaked where he boasted about killing 13 people as a law enforcement official. He constantly used the n-word on the tape. He also used the epithet to describe a Black man who he claimed to have shot at least 119 times. According to the Washington Post, the 16-minute tape, which was uncovered by the Mississippi Center for Investigative Reporting, was recorded by a Black officer who resigned named Robert Lee Hooker. He left the Lexington Police Department last week due to it being a toxic work environment. The recording of a Mississippi police Chief's confession was leaked in April. On the recording, which was acquired by The Washington Post, Dobbins tells about all of the people he killed when he worked as an officer. “I’ve killed 13 men in my career, justified,” Dobbins can be heard saying. “In my line of duty, I have shot and killed 13 different people.” He also said he “saved 67 kids in a school” by shooting a Black man more than 100 times. “I shot that [n-word] 119 times, okay?” Dobbins said. “The vehicle was shot 319 times, but he was hit 119 times by me.” Lexington has a population 1,600 people, with 80 percent being Black. The board of aldermen voted 3-2 Wednesday to get rid of Dobbins.
Brooklyn Bishop Robbed In Pulpit The armed assailants who robbed a Brooklyn bishop and his wife after storming a livestreamed service Sunday made off with $1 million worth of jewelry, police said, after initially saying the value was believed to be around $400,000. Bishop Lamor Whitehead was in the middle of delivering his sermon at the Leaders of Tomorrow International Ministries church in Canarsie when three gunmen burst in around 11:15 a.m., the NYPD said. The armed assailants "displayed firearms and demanded property" from the 44-year-old bishop and his wife, 38, police said. The bishop- who drives a Rolls Royce - also pushed back against comments and headlines that described him as "flashy" with his jewelry in his livestreamed services. "It's not about me being flashy. It's about me purchasing what I want to purchase," he said. "If I worked hard for it, I can purchase what I want to purchase."
What happens when police violate your ‘right to remain silent’?
Dear Editor: The Supreme Court decided recently that people cannot sue police officers for failing to read them their Miranda rights before questioning. In 1966, the Miranda warning became a constitutional rule that the Supreme Court created to protect people’s 5th Amendment right against self-incrimination and 6th Amendment right to counsel. Miranda requires police officers to issue the following warning before questioning suspects: “You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be provided for you. Do you understand the rights I have just read to you? With these rights in mind, do you wish to speak to me?” While law enforcement is welcome to do more to ensure people’s constitutional rights are protected, it cannot do less without violating their constitutional rights. This Vega decision does not change the fact that police are still required to read suspects a Miranda warning before questioning them and, if they don’t, the prosecution will still be barred from using any self-incriminating statements that were compelled by the police at trial. What the Vega holding affects is the right to sue the police under Section 1983 for failing to read a Miranda warning before questioning. This ruling gives police additional qualified immunity. -The Drum

A Response to: “Healing by The Water” Broderick Park, “Sacred Ground” Ignored by the City The views expressed in the Challenger Community News July 7, 2022, edition is not the opinion of Ms. Lillion Batchelor nor of the Batchelor family although the use of her image and that of Dr. Virginia Batchelor suggests otherwise. After receiving a number of phone calls, we felt it was important to set the record straight regarding Buffalo Quarter Historical Society’s involvement in the recent events at Broderick Park. Presently, the organization is not involved in the planning and decision-making for the events that have transpired this year and are therefore unable to respond to the concerns highlighted in the article. However, Dr.Virginia Batchelor media misrepresentation is not the way to build trust. What we can speak to is that our desire for Broderick Park to be a place of edutainment is now a reality. Speaking for Mom Batchelor and Buffalo Quarters Historical Society (BQHS/BQ), I assert that the City of Buffalo has made Broderick Park a priority. An investment of 11 million dollars confirms that Broderick Park’s historical significance as a gateway to freedom is not being ignored (seehttps://www.visitbuffaloniagara.com/businesses/ broderick-park/). Further, by the invitation of Mayor Byron Brown, BQHS was welcomed to sit at the table alongside all of the illustrious organizations to discuss possibilities for creatives to provide visual enhancements that celebrate the history as it pertains to the Underground Railroad Movement (see https://bnwaterkeeper.org/projects/broderickpark/). This project is sure to entice the community and bolster national and international visibility. The activities that have and are taking place in Broderick Park serve to entice visitors to come and leave with a spirit of wanting to know more about the importance of this gateway to freedom. I hope as a community, we will continue to treat Broderick Park like the jewel it is for generations of learning circles, especially for our children to enjoy. I look forward to seeing more funding that ensures safety, maintenance as well as the completion of future projects that are sure to communicate that it is one of the last stops on the Underground Railroad before crossing over into Canada. n July 16th a birthday lunch was held for Constance “Connie” Eve inside The Eve’s beautiful Flower Garden at their Jewett Avenue home. The most lovely flower however, was Mrs. Eve herself, an amazingly accomplished, educated and resilient woman, who spent her life giving to her family and her community. Her conversation was not about meetings and events and organizing, rather she spoke about being grateful to be able to finally enjoy life’s simple pleasures and how she finds, for example, joy these days just sitting on her porch listening to the birds and watching the squirrels. White was the color of the day and her lovely daughter Leecia was the best hostess! Love, blessings and hats off to Mrs. Eve, who is gently gathering her “flowers” in the winter of her life, joyfully and at peace. (Her birthday was actually July 14) -a.b.
Jerry F. Daniels: 90 Years of Fearing God and Loving People

ongratulations to Jerry F. Daniels a long standing business owner and contributor to our community. A Master Barber, he has graced the corner of 859 Jefferson Avenue at his Carl-Jeff Barbershop for 63 years. On August 11 he will turn 90 years young and his family is busy planning to celebrate and honor him at a reception at a later time. A true “people person, ” he is best described as living “90 years of fearing God and loving people.” He’s always said that “every person who walks through that door is my favorite.” And his favorite quote: “Be good to the man in the mirror.”Although he’s packed away his clippers, he remains a true community treasure. He once said in an interview that his work - which he loved - was more of a ministry.” Barbering he declared, was his “passion.” Blessed Birthday Greetings to a true and wise gentleman! -a.b.
