MLK COMMISSION & ROC ROYAL FOUNDATION PRESENTS 2ND ANNUAL JUNETEENTH BLACK EXCELLENCE FAMILY FESTIVAL
JUNE 15, 2019
Martin Luther King Jr Memorial Park at Manhattan Square PARADE STARTS AT 11:00AM ( MLK PARK) SHOW BEGINS AT 12:30PM Roc Juneteenth 5K Wed, Jun 19 – Thu, Jun 20 Genesee Valley Park 1000 E River Rd.
The purpose of the African American Culture Club is to explore, reinforce, and celebrate the African American heritage, culture and historical contributions. At Edison Career & Technology High School, we promote diversity among our students and staff. Our goal is to provide social support while fostering student development and success through cultural awareness, leadership, and community service. Each meeting provides students with a safe place to talk about and share personal experiences as well as address and discuss the cultural and social issues surrounding African Americans in our country. The club is open to all Edison Career & Technology High School students who are interested in learning more about the history, traditions, and customs of African Americans. Some of our activities will include field trips, workshops, voter registration drives and the Black History program. We look forward to you joining our club with open minds and fresh ideas! The two student club members, who were recently honored by The National Honor Society, for their Academic achievements (pictured left) are Abdelrahman Albultamori (male student) and Africa Lee (female student). NACA Brings Four-Day "Achieve the Dream" Home Ownership Event To Western New York Thousands of homebuyers attend NACA’s Home Ownership events in cities across the country, and many are pre-approved for the NACA Mortgage in a single day! This week, NACA will bring the organization’s four-day “Achieve the Dream” mortgage event to the Western New York area where NACA will highlight home ownership opportunities. Attendees can attend home buyer workshops, meet with housing counselors, submit documents and have their files underwritten to be pre-approved for NACA’s mortgages. The 15-or-30-year mortgages have fixed interest rates below market. Bank of America has committed $10 billion to the mortgage program. It's been described as a one-stop mortgage operation, That means that people come in and the same day they can be pre-approved, and everybody gets access to the same mortgage product. NACA underwriters evaluate each borrower based on their individual circumstances, instead of the traditional risk-based lending criteria. NACA does what is called "character-based lending.” Rather than looking at someone’s credit score, they look at the credit reports to see the payments that they control. The initiative officially kicks off Thursday, June 13 at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center and runs from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day through Sunday June 16. For more information see their below. (In photo above a homeowner interacts with a Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America counselor during an event . NACA Photo )

Traffic Enforcement, Fines, and Fees:
A Community Conversation on Excessive Traffic Ticketing and Its Impact on Low-Income Communities Buffalo residents will gather to share personal experiences with spiraling traffic debt along with a new coalition of local grass-roots organizations who will provide data-driven context about aggressive traffic ticketing practices in Buffalo, and the devastating effects that it has on communities of color and the poor. The meeting will give voice to individuals affected and an opportunity for experts to provide facts about traffic enforcement patterns in Buffalo and in New York State all in an effort to create solutions. A meeting will take place on Wednesday, June 19 from 6:00 to 8:00p.m. at the Merriweather, Jr. Library, 1324 Jefferson Avenue. Anyone who has ever been cited with an expensive traffic fine can identify with this issue. Each year thousands of Buffalonian's risk losing their driver’s licenses, their jobs, their homes, and even their freedom simply because they can’t afford to pay traffic fines and associated fees. By New York state law, courts do not waive or reduce fines and fees or offer payment plans. Black and Latinx people in particular are disproportionately stopped and ticketed. These practices create a cycle of debt and punishment that especially burdens low-income communities of color. All Buffalonians and WNY residents are welcome. The conversation is hosted by The Fair Fines + Fees Coalition, a new group of grass-roots organizations and concerned residents coming together to address these issues. Researchers and advocates from the Western New York Law Center and the University at Buffalo School of Law will offer data and other contextual information on the scope of the problem and potential solutions from other states and localities. Mission of The Fair Fines + Fees Coalition: The FFFC believes that transparency and accountability are essential to fairness in our justice system, and that ticketing should not be used solely to generate revenue. FFFC brings together advocates, researchers, government actors, and communities directly affected by disparate ticketing to ensure fines are fairly imposed and enforced, to eliminate fees, and to end exploitative traffic enforcement practices in Buffalo. FFFC members include: The African American Health Disparities Task Force; Western New York Law Center; Center for Employment Opportunities, Buffalo; National Federation for Just Communities of WNY, Inc.; Open Buffalo; Partnership for the Public Good; SEIU 1199 Funds; Western New York Peace Center; and concerned citizens .https://www.facebook.com/FairFinesFeesBuffalo/
Legislator Howard Johnson Secures Van Donation for Community Members in Buffalo Erie County Legislator Howard Johnson (D-Buffalo) has worked with the administration of Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz to secure a surplus van from the Erie County Department of Senior Services. The 12-passenger van was previously utilized by the County’s “Going Places” program and will be donated to the Buffalo Urban League for their use in transporting members of the community. “I am thrilled that I was able to work with the Erie County Department of Senior Services to make sure that residents of the 1st Legislative District and across the city of Buffalo have access to the transportation support they need. This donation will serve the elderly, the young, and many others who rely on certain community agencies for transportation to and from medical appointments or other needs in and around Erie County,” said Legislator Johnson. Constituents or community organizations in the 1st Legislative District with concerns or needing help with County services are encouraged to call or email Marietta at Legislator Johnson’s district office. A Brief History of Juneteenth Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of the enslavement of Africans in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that Blacks were now free. This was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive Order. However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger’s regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance. General Order Number 3 One of General Granger’s first orders of business was to read to the people of Texas, General Order Number 3 which began most significantly with: "The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and free laborer." The reactions to this profound news ranged from pure shock to immediate jubilation. The celebration of June 19th was coined "Juneteenth" and grew with more participation from descendants. 2019 marks the 154th anniversary of the first Juneteenth celebration as well as Buffalo’s 44th consecutive year of celebrating this historic event. Juneteenth is a celebration of Freedom, Heritage and Humanity.

A FATHER’S GIFT TO HIS CHILDREN Actor, writer, director, and entrepreneur Peter Johnson has published a book about helping children survive divorce and separation. He wrote The Cow on Two Farms, A Children’s Guide of How to Cope with Divorce and Separation as a creative way to remind his children that fatherhood does not end with divorce and to help them live with the fear and confusion of a divided household. On Sunday, June 2, Peter provided a short reading and Q&A followed by an interactive panel discussion about how adults can assist children experiencing family divorce and separation during a book signing at the Merriweather Library. Peter explains. “I want children to see the benefits of living in two homes. I wanted my children to understand that I loved them, and we were going to remain a family despite the separation. It was important for them to know that this experience does not necessarily have to be a scary memory but a childhood adventure where they feel loved and share a few laughs with their loved ones.”

Elders Griot Village Something New at Juneteenth
B
uffalo's Elders will finally have a place of their own where they can rest, relax and enjoy the Juneteenth Festival under this year's Elders Griot Village tent. This is a new addition to the Juneteenth Festival this year and may be considered as a permanent feature in future Juneteenth celebration.Griot ( 'greeo' pronounced with a silent t), is an African word used to describe the wise men or women or elders of the village who were charged with keeping an oral or written history of the culBetty Jean tural and community event of a specific group GRANT of people through spoken words, stories, art and music. All elders, 62 and older, will be welcomed to spend time with other senior citizens in a restful, refreshing and quiet environment. We are also asking elders to dress in white or Africaninspired attire and to march behind a beautiful Elders Griot Village banner during the Juneteenth Parade. These elders can march the whole route or they may join the parade near Calvary Baptist Church parking lot for the final block of the parade route A traditional Libation Ceremony will be held at the griot village tent immediately after the parade. Also, for the elders' convenience, designated shuttle services to transport the elders within the festival area will be provided at no charge for both days of the Juneteenth Festival. Free water, juices and snack refreshments will be provided for our esteemed elders while they are in the 'Village'. Please call Betty Jean Grant, 716-602-5877 to sign up to join us in the parade or for additional information
Join Juneteenth of Buffalo, Storycorpos, SUNY Erie, NPR and the Library of Congress as we listen to, honor and share the life stories of our elders.
As we pause to celebrate Juneteenth 2019, reflect on the Emancipation Proclamation and the delayed message to our ancestors in Texas, let us rededicate ourselves to the pursuit of education knowing that knowledge will truly "set you free".

'Ain't Too Proud' Shut Out At Tony Awards But Still Brings Down the House! THE TEMPTATIONS MUSICAL EARNED 12 NOMINATIONS, BUT ONLY TOOK HOME ONE DURING SUNDAY'S TONY AWARDS. The critically-acclaimed musical, based on the Temptations, Ain’t Too Proud may have been snubbed at the Tony Awards last Sunday, but the show’s cast still brought down the house. The production was nominated for 12 Tony Awards this year, including Best Musical and Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for star Derrick Baskin, but only took home Best Choreography. Despite being snubbed in multiple categories, the cast of Ain’t Too Proud put on a mesmerizing performance during the ceremony, performing a medley of Temptations hits. The nearly five-minute performance included songs such as “Ain’t Too Proud TO Beg” “Just My Imagination,” and “I Can’t Get Next to You.”

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!
Black Fathers Are Our Superheroes!
B
lack Fathers are our Superheroes. Period. Point blank. End of story. Actually, it is not the end of the story. On the contrary, it is a story that needs to be told constantly. A story that needs to be passed around from hood to hood, block to block, suburb to suburb, culde-sac to cul-de-sac, state to state, coast to coast. The word needs to be spread all over: there are an abundance of EXCELLENT Black fathers out there and we should be celebrated! There are currently several examples of great Black Fathers in the public eye. Athletes and their dads, actors, movie stars, comedians, and even President Barack Obama, all serve as great exemplars of what an extraordinary father looks like. However, this is only half of our story. The other half is the Black father who isn’t on TV or movie screens on a daily basis. The other half remains obscure and not celebrated the way it should be. The other half is underappreciated, often overlooked and even forgotten. The forgotten Black Fathers aren’t actually forgotten though. Very rarely are they left empty handed on Father’s Day, sad and gift-less. No. That wouldn’t be fair, to accuse of such a crime, all of the mothers, children, and others who love and appreciate the black men in their lives. However, the praises of Black Fathers continue go unsung. In a culture where too often the black man is absent from the household for various reasons, the current generation of Black Fathers set out to reverse that trend. The new generation is stepping up to the plate by any means necessary. Unfortunately, this home run of great parenting is often hit in a stadium full of empty seats. Where are our fans? What happened to our cheerleaders? Are we not worthy of being presented with trophies? These are all very valid questions that need to be addressed. I am Black. I am a father. I am a Superhero. We all are. I think it is time we be acknowledged. Black Fathers possess out of this world, larger than life qualities that need to be showcased more often. The father who never misses his sons’ basketball practice OR games. The dad who plays house with his daughter and her favorite dolls. The father who wouldn’t dare allow his son to sit in the barbershop with his mom and miss an opportunity to bond as males while waiting to get haircuts. The dad that reads to his kids every night, no matter how busy his schedule is. These are our Heroes. What are our super powers? Thought you would never ask! We possess the power of being there when our son needs us, faster than a speeding bullet. The ability to read our daughter’s mind and make her smile with telepathic abilities. The super human strength to lift our kids up to help them reach their dreams and the supersonic speed to run alongside as they chase them. The vertical ability to leap over stereotypes and misconceptions of Black Fathers in a single bound! Yes, like most superheroes, we have our weaknesses. This should not overshadow the fact that we are heroes. We need to be celebrated as such. I say we often because I am, in fact, a Black Father. I am a former single father. I am currently a father of three super cool kids for whom I would do anything in the world. I have friends who are also great fathers that could not fathom not being there to raise their sons. I have friends who would not allow another man to influence their daughter in a non-positive way. Friends that take pride in having a relationship with their kids that is the antithesis of the relationship they had with their own fathers. My friends actually frown upon our peers who are not involved in their kids’ lives on the daily basis. My friends cannot possibly befriend men who do not take fatherhood as seriously as we do.

The Importance of Transparency We Need A Woman's Democratic Party! and Honesty: Here Are The Facts... Dear Editor:
A
front-page article in a local community newspaper written by a local individual with political aspirations was published last week whose very premise is based on inaccuracies. If this individual is serious about being a community leader and representing his neighbors, he should stick to the facts, do his homework, conduct research, and stop engaging in falsehoods. It is very disappointing when community members aspiring to become leaders in government start engaging in “fake news” and misrepresenting the truth for political purposes. The community I represent deserves better. Legislator April This is the third time this year that this BASKIN individual has made false claims about Erie County government. Either he is outright lying or he is dangerously misinformed. In his latest false claims, he wrote “The County, which owns hundreds of vacant lots across the city of Buffalo, sells some land to a developer, who builds some luxury lofts on your street.” He also wrote “Erie County can give a large majority of the vacant lots that they own to neighborhood associations so that residents can have a say in the type of development in their community.” This individual’s claims about the County government owning “hundreds of vacant lots across the city of Buffalo” is flatly not true. Erie County government DOES NOT own such vacant lots. If he had bothered to check the Erie County Department of Real Property Tax Services’ online database, or call its director, or call BENLIC, the Buffalo Erie Niagara Land Improvement Corporation (the City-County Land Bank), he would have learned in minutes that his claims are not true. In fact, there are hundreds, if not thousands of vacant CITY OF BUFFALO-OWNED vacant lots across the city. Most of those lots are held by the Buffalo Urban Renewal Agency (BURA), an entity over which the County government has no authority or control. In his prior false claims about Erie County government, he erroneously stated that the County’s HEAP (Home Energy Assistance Program) office had moved from Main Street in downtown Buffalo to a suburban community, when it had only moved a few hundred feet to a different building off of Main Street. He also falsely asserted that the County administration’s relocation of the Child Protective Services (CPS) offices from Buffalo to Cheektowaga would negatively affect Buffalo residents’ access to appointments and visits, when in fact, the CPS caseworkers travel to clients’ homes in our community and most of the visits and work is conducted in the field at homes, and not the CPS offices. I encourage all of my neighbors, friends and constituents in the City of Buffalo to reach out to my office for factual information regarding their Erie County-based quality of life concerns. It is my goal as Chairwoman of the Erie County Legislature to be transparent and honest with all individuals.
My mission is to display Black Fathers in a light that we have rarely been shown in before. I am on an even greater mission to highlight the abilities of single Black Fathers and the super powers they possess: the ability to have a lifelong impact on our children. I am Black. I am a father. I am a Superhero. We all are. I think it is time we be acknowledged. - Stephen McGill II Mr. Mc Gill is a Children’s Book Author and Super Dad.)

There are elections for the Buffalo Common Council this year and if we would just look at the team the Erie County Democratic Party has endorsed, you would think that there are no qualified women to run for those nine seats or that no woman asked to be considered. That is the farthest time from the truth. I know because my friend, a highly qualified woman on the westside of Buffalo, circulated petitions along with other qualified women candidates, including many from the African American community.
dear editor
Not only were these women not considered, they were turned upon by our Democratic political party who worked illegally with the county Board of Elections to knock them off the ballot! There were women candidates who turned in petitions for the Niagara, Delaware, University, Masten, Fillmore, Lovejoy Districts and yet not one of these women were endorsed by the Democratic Party. The campaign team of my candidate went to court when she was knocked off the ballot by a technicality. She lost because lawyers who want to be judges and sitting judges who want to be elevated to a higher office, did the beckoning of a political party and board of elections out of control. But that is not hard for them to do that as they are controlled by the same guy. The women of Buffalo and maybe Erie County too, need to form their own political party to get a chance to run and be supported by our own Women Democratic Party. There are currently no women serving on the Buffalo Common Council. That will not change until we women across all ethnic groups unite and vote some of those men out and ourselves in. We are the largest voting bloc in the county. It is time we start acting like it! Antionette Bianca
I Shall Return….. Dear Editor: To the democrats who live in the City of Buffalo in the Fillmore District who signed my petitions, by now it’s obvious that after successfully making the ballot in the past, I did not make it this time. On Aril 4th I conceded the Fillmore District race to become a legitimate democratic candidate. I knew too many of the names collected were no good, and it made no sense to submit any petitions to the Board of Elections, when I already knew what the outcome would be. This was my fourth time running for the Fillmore District Common Council Seat. We, the Real Friends of Samuel A. Herbert, made the ballot each year that we ran, 2007, 2011, 2015, without the Erie County Democratic Party’s help, or any political community group’s assistance. Unfortunately, this year due to my personal handicap and the extremely cold weather, the petition process was often times brutal, unlike in the past when the election was held in September allowing us the benefit of warm summer months caused me to concede. Normally the petition process has always been in the summer months. When the N.Y. S. Board of Elections moved the Democratic primary to Tuesday June 25th it made the first day of the petition process February 26, the day of a snowstorm, and then we had seven days of severe cold and high winds. I started one and a half weeks late due to my handicap (I had polio as a child) and winter months sometimes makes it difficult for me to walk . I’m disappointed but still determined. I shall return! -Samuel A. Herbert
