Legal Action Announced Against The Proposed Billion Dollar Toxic Tunnel

East Side Parkways Coalition Urges Governor Hochul and NYS Assembly-

Woman Crystal Peoples-Stokes to take action and require NYSDOT to prepare a complete Environmental Impact Study!

The East Side Parkways Coalition (ESP) has announced the filing of legal actions against the proposed billion dollar tunneling of a small section of the Kensington Expressway.

“Our legal challenge is simple,” states the the Coalition's website. “The DOT did not properly follow the law in ramming through approval of a project of this scope. A full Environmental Impact Statement is clearly required.”

-Restore The Parkway!-

Eastside Parkways is committed to restoring the Humboldt Parkway and is opposed to the recent actions taken by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) to move forward with its plan to cover a portion of the Kensington Expressway and create a 4 lane,150foot-long tunnel between Sidney Street and Dodge Street. The organization has retained legal experts to challenge these actions and ensure that NYSDOT complies with all applicable state laws, as well as its own guidance.

The legal actions also include claims that the tunnel violates the Public Trust Doctrine and New York State’s Green Amendment. The East Side Parkways Coalition demands full restoration of the original Humboldt Parkway design running from Delaware Park to Martin Luther King Jr. Park.

June 24 is RJ Jackson Day in Buffalo

Additionally, they are challenging NYSDOT’s determination under the New York State Environmental Quality Review Act, that the Build Alternative will have no significant adverse environmental impacts. Given the size and scope of the project, as well as the insufficiency of the environmental review that has been completed thus far, state law requires the preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement before the project may proceed.

RJ Jackson Day will be declared in the City of Buffalo when the Common Council honors the award-winning motivational speaker, author and coach for women, RJ Jackson, inside City Hall. Known world-wide as “the Courage Giver,” the Southern California-based Jackson, a Buffalo native, is dedicated to empowering women and igniting their confidence. Be among the First 20 people to spot RJ Jackson in Buffalo on June 24 and say hello to receive an autographed copy of her book ‘Decisions Women Face and Make.”’ Her inspirational column appears monthly in The Challenger (See Page 16). RJ Jackson. Look for her in Bufalo June 24 and win an autographed copy of her book ‘Decisions Women Face and Make.”’

The East Side Parkways Coalition urges Governor Hochul and NYS Assemblywoman Crystal Peoples-Stokes to take action and require NYSDOT to prepare a complete Environmental Impact Study to guarantee a full analysis of the environmental impacts of the project along with a detailed examination of alternatives including the removal of the Kensington Expressway and full restoration of Frederick Law Olmsted’s original Humboldt Parkway design.

The Coalition’s recently held press conference took place on one of the last remaining green swaths of Humboldt Parkway, just north of the Science Museum, at Humboldt Parkway and Northampton Street.

Several ancient African cultures birthed discoveries in astronomy. Many of these are foundations on which we still rely, and some were so advanced that their mode of discovery still cannot be understood. Egyptians charted the movement of the sun and constellations and the cycles of the moon. They divided the year into 12 parts and developed a yearlong calendar system containing 365 1⁄4 days . Clocks were made with moving water and sundial-like clocks were used.

A structure known as the African Stonehenge in present-day Kenya (constructed around 300 B.C.) was a remarkably accurate calendar. Dogon people of Mali amassed a wealth of detailed astronomical observations. Many of their discoveries were so advanced that some modern scholars credit their discoveries instead to space aliens or unknown European travelers, even though the Dogon culture is steeped in ceremonial tradition centered on several space events. The Dogon knew of Saturn’s rings, Jupiter’s moons, the spiral structure of the Milky Way and the orbit of the Sirius star system. Hundreds of years

Maat E’s Mental Health Message

Create a spiritual support team. Life can be overwhelming on so many levels... work, family, relationships, friendships, kids. We all need people in our lives that we can call on for spiritual and emotional support. These are the people who help to remind us that the troubles we face will pass, the hurt we feel will heal and the confusion we have will turn to clarity. These are the peoplewho also tell us bluntly that we need to check our behavior or to be gentle with ourselves. Thank God for the support network you have or are about to create. Peace, Maat E.

Benefits of Bike Riding

Cycling can be a great way to tune up your body, mind and your immune system.

The Low impact exercise is proven to have many benefits . Studies show that cycling improves mental well being and can boost your mood and confidence especially if you ride with groups that are supportive if you are new to riding. More benefits like improved respiratory health, strengthened immune system, leg and body strength, and cardio vascular health come with pushing the pedal fast or slow. Although slower cycling may seem pointless if you are putting in 5 or more miles it does the job and soon your speed, skill and distance will improve. Cycling has long been linked to brain health and reducing damaging cognitive changes as it improves blood flow to the brain.

If you need a group to ride with try East Side Bike Club. They meet Wednesdays for beginners & safety 6- 7 p.m. and every Saturday 9:30 a.m. at MLK park head.

We Are Stronger Together: A Learning Series For The Faith Community

Mental illness continues to evolve in our communities. Sadly, mental illness impacts our youth and underserved communities to greater degrees. Chandra Redfern, CEO of the Buffalo Federation of Neighborhood Centers (BFNC), has made it a part of the agency’s mission to take a lead in healing our communities. One focus was establishing collaborative partnerships to reach a large segment of the community.

For the second year, the State of New York under the leadership of Governor Hochul and the Office of Mental Health, has supported the faith-based mental wellness initiative.

“It was clear to me that the faith-based community had to be at the planning table to help develop solutions to help communities of color heal,” said Chandra. “Although we continue to embrace learning about the various triggers of mental illness, each clergy and their congregation members are dedicated to creating a network of caring and informed community members committed to mental wellness.”

STRESSORS, TRAUMA, and GRIEF AFFECTS ALL

Research states that all races and ethnic groups experience mental illness, but people of color are less likely to receive treatment due to barriers such as stigma and accessing culturally sensitive mental wellness care. These disparities can have a serious impact on mental health in communities of color.

WHY THE FAITH-BASED COMMUNITY?

Further research has found that Faith-based community leaders are often the first point of contact when individuals and families face mental health problems or traumatic events.

HEALING IS POSSIBLE WITH A HELPING HAND

The BFNC leadership believes healing is possible, but there is a need for informed faith-based community leaders to work with experienced mental health professionals on the front line. Redfern adds, “Healing community requires all community members to be aware of the triggers and how to help.”

IT’S WORKING!

The faith-based mental health leadership sessions have been a success. There is interest! Faith community leaders are learning together and developing collaborative outreach solutions. Examples would include the attendance of clergy and congregation members for the new SOUL SHOP for Churches program and the BFNC-hosted Faith Based BIPOC mental health learning sessions.

The next free BIPOC session will take place Tuesday, June 25 from 6-8 p.m. at BFNC, 2365 Main Street (see their ad this page). For more information call (716)852-5065 ext. 183 or go to //bfncgriefandlos-givesmart.com

Celebrate to Elevate: Recognizing Your Wins

Welcome to our monthly column, where we provide success tips in a quick story form. In this column, we will share stories of individuals who have achieved their goals by implementing effective success skills.

Our aim is to share tips on how to achieve success in both personal and professional spheres.

A high school senior, Jada had just passed a tough physics course. With her graduation and Juneteenth around the corner, she felt overwhelmed. Her mentor, Mr. Thompson, noticed her stress and invited her to the school's Juneteenth celebration. This event commemorates freedom and resilience, and Mr. Thompson thought it might lift Jada's spirits.

During the celebration, Mr. Thompson shared a story about Carlos, a former student who became a successful engineer. Carlos once struggled in school but learned to celebrate his small victories. Each time he passed a difficult test or completed a challenging project, he took a moment to acknowledge his hard work. These small celebrations kept him motivated.

Inspired by this story, Jada decided to celebrate her own milestones. She hosted a small party with friends and family to mark her success in physics and her upcoming graduation. The celebration filled her with joy and renewed energy, preparing her for the next phase of her life.

By celebrating her achievements, Jada learned the importance of recognizing her progress. These moments of celebration gave her the strength and motivation to keep going.

Remember, celebrating your milestones, big or small, rejuvenates your spirit and prepares you for future challenges. Take time to celebrate your wins to elevate your success!

Curtis Lovell Named New Artistic Director of Ujima Company

The Board of Directors of Ujima Company, Inc. is proud to announce the appointment of Curtis Lovell as Artistic Director of the company’s ensemble effective July 1st, 2024.

Ujima is a venerable Black led theater company, founded in 1978 by the iconic Lorna C. Hill, and it is Western New York’s oldest repertory theater company. Lovell is Ms. Hill’s youngest child and a long-time member of Ujima Company.

An accomplished actor, singer-songwriter in their own right, Curtis Lovell has been appearing on stage since the age of four. Growing up in the theater has afforded Curtis an opportunity to develop skills in many critical roles, including stage manager, set designer, costume designer, director and producer. He is a multiple Artie Award winner and has appeared in over 30 Ujima productions, including fan favorites Passing Strange, For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enough, SPUNK and The Color Purple. Directing credits include the highly lauded Ujima productions Toni Stone, STEW, Choir Boy and Cullud Wattah.

In addition, Curtis has experience teaching both theater and music for afterschool programs of the Buffalo Public Schools and for Young Audiences of WNY.

In 2021 Curtis originated and directed a 5-part streaming digital series, Hair On Fire, based on pieces from their mother’s autobiographical choreopoem, Yalla Bitch and in 2022 they directed a commissioned video series of 45 shorts, based on Walt Whitman’s Calamus poems.

Board President, Patrice Cathey, had this to say about today’s announcement, “Curtis' experience, talent and dedication to Ujima is noteworthy, as is their lifelong dedication to the arts. We are confident Curtis will help propel Ujima to new, unimaginable heights and we look forward to continuing Lorna Hill’s legacy through Curtis’ vision and expertise.”

Sarah Norat-Phillips, Exiting Artistic Director said, “Curtis is a generational talent who fully understands the responsibility of leading this 45- year old theatrical institution into the future. I have been honored to watch them grow as an artist and I am very excited to see the company’s talents continue to develop under their stewardship.”

Lovell is also a popular and talented Buffalo musician. In addition to working on their own original recordings and compositions, he is an in-demand vocalist who has performed and recorded with many of the area’s best known musicians including Walter Kemp, David Johnathon, Bilal Abdullah, Karen Saxon, Rodney Appleby and many others.

"As the new artistic director, I'm honored to build upon the legacy left by my predecessors, " said Curtis Lovell, “infusing fresh ideas while honoring the foundation they've established. Thank you to Sarah and my mother Lorna for their love and unwavering support.”

Congratulations Curtis!

Juneteenth: Celebrating the Strength of Black Women: Navigating Struggles with Resilience

As we celebrate Juneteenth and reflect on the journey of Black Americans towards freedom and equality, it's essential to acknowledge the unique struggles faced by Black women today. From systemic racism to gender discrimination, the burdens can feel overwhelming. Even still, in the face of adversity, Black women have always displayed unparalleled strength, resilience, and grace.

In facing these challenges, let's explore three empowering steps tailored for us as Black women, to stand resilient:

1.Cultivate Sisterhood and Support:

One of the greatest sources of strength for Black women lies in the bonds of sisterhood. Building a community of support with other women provides a safe space for sharing experiences, offering encouragement, and uplifting one another. Whether through mentorship programs, support groups, or simply fostering meaningful connections, prioritizing sisterhood fosters resilience and solidarity.

2. Embrace Self-Care as a Revolutionary Act: Self-care is not just a luxury; it's a radical act of self-preservation and resistance. In the face of societal pressures and expectations, as Black women we must prioritize our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. This means setting boundaries, practicing mindfulness, engaging in activities that bring joy, and seeking professional support when needed. By prioritizing self-care, we reclaim our power and recharge our spirits to continue the fight for justice and equality.

3. Harness the Power of Resilience and Faith:

Throughout history, Black women have demonstrated unparalleled resilience in the face of adversity. Drawing strength from ancestral wisdom, cultural heritage, and spiritual practices, Black women have persevered against unimaginable odds. By tapping into this reservoir of resilience and holding onto their faith, Black women can continue to navigate challenges with courage, determination, and unwavering hope. Let’s continue trusting in the plans that God has for us to prosper and be in good health believing in His guiding light even in the darkest of times.

In closing, to every Black woman, I want to remind you of your immeasurable strength, resilience, and worth. Your journey is marked by triumphs and tribulations, but through it all, you remain resilient, unyielding, and beautiful. As we celebrate Juneteenth and honor the sacrifices of our ancestors, let us continue to lift each other up, amplify our voices, and advocate for a future where every Black woman can thrive. Hold fast to your faith, your family, and the promise of brighter days ahead. Together we heal, grow, and prosper as we pave the way for generations to come.

The ego is a monkey catapulting through the jungle: Totally fascinated by the realm of the senses, it swings from one desire to the next, one conflict to the next, one self-centered idea to the next. If you threaten it, it actually fears for its life. Let this monkey go. Let the senses go. Let desires go. Let conflicts go.

Let ideas go. Let the fiction of life and death go. Just remain in the center, watching. And then forget that you are there.

CSAT Commemorates Juneteenth

Special CSAT Project Merges History, Agriculture and Literacy

The Charter School for Applied Technologies (CSAT), a leading institution in innovative education, proudly announces the successful completion of a groundbreaking collaborative effort between plant science and special content educators. Inspired by historical facts and the poignant narrative of Anne Broyles' book "Priscilla and the Hollyhocks," students embarked on a transformative journey following the true story of Priscilla, an enslaved African American child from rural Georgia to her emancipation in Illinois along the Trail of Tears.

Throughout this enriching experience, students explored Priscilla's harrowing journey of enslavement while planting hollyhocks (Alcea rosea) and nurturing hopes for a brighter future. Under the guidance of dedicated educators spanning disciplines from music, library sciences, art, physical education, and technology, students engaged in multifaceted learning experiences, enhancing their understanding of history, agriculture, and literacy.

The highlight of this initiative was the innovative project led by award-winning elementary school teacher Ms. Cinde Cozad in CSAT Elementary’s greenhouse class. Ms. Cozad spearheaded a remarkable endeavor that merged the intersections of history, agriculture, and literacy. Leveraging sixth-generation seeds procured from the historic homestead of Priscilla in Mulkeytown, Illinois, students cultivated, nurtured, and harvested these seeds, connecting deeply with the narrative and the land.

"This project is important because it not only teaches history but also fosters critical thinking and innovation, essential skills for 21st-century learning," stated Ms. Cozad, emphasizing the project's significance in nurturing our well-rounded scholars.

The culmination of this learning journey was marked by a memorable Zoom meeting where students had the unique opportunity to interact with the esteemed author of "Priscilla and the Hollyhocks," Anne Broyles. Engaging in dialogue and posing thought-provoking questions, students gained valuable insights into the inspiration behind the narrative, further enriching their understanding of the historical context.

As the project draws to a close, students reflected on the poignant quote, "All that is lost will be found," encapsulating the resilience and perseverance embodied by Priscilla and countless others throughout history. As CSAT commemorates Juneteenth, the enduring legacy of resilience and determination resonates, honoring the sacrifices of ancestors like Priscilla who paved the way for future generations.

Our Mission Statement:

The Charter School for Applied Technologies prepares students to attain family-sustaining careers by integrating career exploration and a lifelong learning culture.

Minority Bar Association Of WNY Rates 2024 Judicial Candidates

Hon. Judge Barbara Johnson-Lee Receives Highest Rating of "Superior"

The Minority Bar Association of Western New York (MBAWNY) has completed its spring 2024 judicial ratings of candidates for Buffalo City Court and the New York State Supreme Court. The annual ratings are performed to provide voters with nonpartisan information on candidates running for judicial offices.

Using questionnaires and interviews, candidates were evaluated based on criteria deemed vital to hold judicial office including attitude, commitment, education, experience, fairness, integrity, professional ability, reputation, sensitivity, statutory standards, and temperament. Each candidate was then ranked as Superior; Well Qualified, Qualified, Qualified but Limited by Experience, or Cannot Recommend. The rating system used by the Minority Bar Association’s Judiciary Committee, although similar to that of other local bar associations, is unique in that it focuses on representing minority voices and perspectives.

The 2024 Judicial Ratings of candidates, which have been certified by the MBAWNY’s Executive Board, are as follow:

•NEW YORK STATE SUPREME COURT (EIGHTH JUDICIAL DISTRICT)

Robert Richardson, Confidential Law Clerk. Rating: WELL QUALIFIED

BUFFALO CITY COURT

•Erin E. Hart, Principal Counsel to the Appellate Division, 4th Judicial Department Attorney Grievance Committee, 8th Judicial District. Rating: QUALIFIED

•Hon. Barbara Johnson-Lee Acting Erie County Court Judge Buffalo City Court. Rating: SUPERIOR

•Rashied H. McDuffie Deputy Mayor of Operations for the City of Buffalo. Rating: QUALIFIED

“The judicial ratings from the Minority Bar Association of Western New York matter. This organization is the voice for legal issues affecting the Western New York minority communities,” said Kristen Elmore-Garcia, chair of the MBAWMY’s Judiciary Committee. “Candidates submit their applications to obtain ratings from the Minority Bar Association. They undergo extensive background investigations, and interviews in front of a diverse panel. Our ratings are accurate and educate the community during election season.”

Ifeoluwa Motunrayo Popoola is President of the Minority Bar Association of WNY.

Buffalo’s Juneteenth History

According to Juneteenth of Buffalo long time president, Marcus Brown, the original vision was inspired by members of the BUILD organization, who were unsettled and disparaged with America’s version of freedom, celebrated across the United States on July 4, a celebration in recognition of the liberty granted to the original colonies, by the British, as a result of their defeat in the Revolutionary War (1775-1783). Mindful of the fact that the ‘freedom’ afforded the colonists did not include those of African descent who remained enslaved by Europeans in this new, ‘free’ nation, the BUILD team committed to research until they discovered an event in American history that celebrated the freedom of Black people. The events in Galveston, TX in June 1865 surfaced; the BUILD team got busy, educating the community about that period; and the rest is history. This team, the founders of Juneteenth of Buffalo, included among others, Judson Price, Doug Ruffin, Sr., Claudia Sims, and Mary Robinson. They organized and implemented the first Buffalo Juneteenth celebration in June 1976, on Jefferson Ave. Black Buffalo celebrated with their families in an atmosphere of festivities, food, fun, live music, and street dancing; all aimed toward improving our cultural awareness. After outgrowing the Jefferson Ave. festival corridor, the event was moved to Fillmore Ave. and Martin Luther King Park, and covers approximately 50 acres (2,178,000 sq. feet!) with activities and entertainment for all ages; cultural consciousness events; a health fair; book giveaway; and a kick-off parade that is un-

matched by any other parade of its kind.

The Future of Juneteenth of Buffalo Brown, who has been a volunteer to the Festival since 1976, and has served as president of the Board of Directors for about 24 years, believes that the Buffalo fes-

tival’s growth, coupled with its longevity, is attributed to the commitment of the community’s support and volunteer force. They supply the tremendous amount of human power and energy that drives and electrifies the success of the, now, nearly 2-week event. His vision for the future of Juneteenth of Buffalo is to pass the torch; encouraging Board members and committee volunteers to follow the principle of ‘each one reaching and teaching one’ to move into those positions that make the festival happen, bigger and better, each year. He also looks forward to the festival reaching its full potential; expanding its outreach to provide community awareness programs that address health and fitness, finances, and history,

especially that which re minds us of who we really are and the rich heritage that flows through our blood.

Juneteenth 365 is the ultimate goal of the organization. Led by its committed and diligent Board of Directors, Committee Chairs, Volunteers, and supported by its numerous sponsors, the festival seeks to concentrate on the continual education, enhancement, and enlightenment of the community. The history of the AfricanAmericans is infinite and often ‘under-taught’ in our educational and religious institutions. Juneteenth Festival of Buffalo, Inc.’s hope is that, eventually, the organization won’t be viewed with only the “Festival” as its focus, but anticipate continuous, daily and weekly events sponsored by the organization, making it a yearround resource. The board is encouraging and seeking young people who are willing to carry the eternal torch of Juneteenth into the next quarter of the 21 century and beyond.

-A Father’s Day Message-

Black Fathers, Our Heroes! We Need You to Stay Healthy!

All Black men are not gangsters, killers, thieves, liars, drug dealers, child abusers, or dead beat dads. There are those who have beat the odds, who have achieved in their respective professions, who love their wives and families, who try daily to do the right thing. These men are not blazoned across our television screens (although they should be), but rather, they are our quiet heroes, who set examples daily by their good works, strong moral fiber, their leadership in their homes, their professions, and their communities. They are our daily role models - going to work every day, quietly setting positive examples for our youth, often without fanfare or reward. That’s why ...we’d like to give the good Black men out there a “standing ovation” and declare them our “heroes.”

Hero can be defined as “somebody who commits an act of remarkable bravery or who has shown great courage, strength of character, or another admirable quality”; somebody who is admired and looked up to for outstanding qualities or achievements. Who better to wear this honor than the Black fathers, sons, and brothers who get up each day, take on the days’ challenges, to make their place in the world - a world that is often suspect, hostile, jealous and resentful of their contributions. Make no mistake, being a Black man is hard work every day.

So, in celebrating all good Black Men, we salute you and encourage you to take on one more challenge: to get healthy and stay healthy. And if you’re in shape, encourage your male friends to get in shape too. You know the statistics: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Black men, on average live to age 69.7 years compared to White men (75.7 years). There’s nothing funny about the jokes told about Black men needing to collect social security at age 35 because they won’t live long enough to collect social security benefits at age 65. Vow to be one of the Black men that changes those dismal statistics.

There is no macho value in neglecting your health, carrying around extra weight, neglecting control of your blood pressure and blood sugar, smoking, doing drugs, practicing unsafe sex, not exercising, not visiting your doctor, not getting your check-ups, and not listening to your body. Real heroes respect themselves - and that includes their bodies. You can’t help anyone if you’re sick (or dead). We desperately need you around for as long as possible, healthy, clear thinking, and strong so that you can continue your good work and contributions to your families and to our community! -Dr. Mary S. Harris

WAR AND FAMINE IN SUDAN

Khartoum, the capital of Sudan and one of the largest cities in Africa, has been reduced to a charred battleground. A feud between two generals fighting for power has dragged the country into civil war and turned the city into ground zero for one of the world’s worst humanitarian catastrophes.

As many as 150,000 people have died since the conflict erupted last year, by American estimates. Another nine million have been forced from their homes, making Sudan home to the largest displacement crisis on earth, the United Nations says. A famine looms that officials warn could kill hundreds of thousands of children in the coming months and, if unchecked, rival the great Ethiopian famine of the 1980s.

Fueling the chaos, Sudan has become a playground for foreign players like the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Russia and its Wagner mercenaries, and even a few Ukrainian special forces. They are all part of a volatile stew of outside interests pouring weapons or fighters into the conflict and hoping to grab the spoils of war — Sudan’s gold, for instance, or its perch on the Red Sea.

US Pays Reparations Everyday Just Not to Black America

Japanese Americans - No article on Reparations for injured parties is complete without acknowledging our Japanese American colleagues. The Civil Liberties Act of 1988, August 10, 1988, a United States federal law granted reparations to Japanese Americans who had been wrongly interned by the United States government during World War II. This act served a dual purpose because it was intended to "discourage the occurrence of similar injustices and violations of civil liberties in the future.” It is key for the reader to note that in 1892, almost 100 years prior, the seated POTUS would give the Italian Americans $5000 more on his signature alone.

US Pays Reparations Everyday Just Not to Black America

Every day, someone somewhere in America is being compensated under the concept of what is known as restorative justice, a type of justice that instead of meting out punishment to a wrongdoer, seeks to make the victims or their families whole—or at least repair them as much as possible. Restorative justice is also known as reparative justice, or, in the context of the experience of Black Americans from the first slave ships in the 1600's through to today, simply reparations. But unlike those other, everyday reparations, Black reparations are seen by many as a highly charged political third rail. Harvard Kennedy School faculty members Cornell William Brooks and Linda Bilmes launched a research project to see if they could change the conversation. They found a situation that is, to put it mildly, perverse. Cataloging the harms suffered by Black Americans through the centuries from slavery itself through segregation, disenfranchisement, economic and educational discrimination, wealth inequality, and more, they found that no group was perhaps more deserving of being made whole.

They also studied and cataloged a huge system of American restorative compensation that works every day to make people whole for the harm they have suffered. What they didn’t find, however, was a connection between the reparative justice sorely needed by People of African Descent and the reparative justice everyone else receives every day further disputing Dave Horowitz’s claim that we simply put our hands out begging.

5 Strategies to Grow Black Homeownership

In 1865, over 159 years ago, the U.S. eliminated or outlawed slavery in the U.S. with the passage of the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. One of the promises and pledges to freed slaves was that each would receive 40 acres and a mule. This commitment would help former slaves with building a home, raising a family and growing wealth through land ownership and entrepreneurship. While some Black Americans were able to receive land in the 1860s and 1870s, unfortunately, many former slaves nor their descendants ever received land. In fact, many Black Americans that were given land were chased off their land with force and brutality from the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) and other white supremacy organizations.

Still to this day the dream of land and homeownership continues to be elusive for Black Americans from slavery, post slavery, the Jim Crow Era, the Civil Rights Era to the present. Whether it was the trick bag of sharecropping, land contracts, subprime loans, eminent domain policies or outright redlining of Black neighborhoods by banks and government organizations, it should not come as a surprise that there continues to be a persistent 30-point racial gap in homeownership rates in the U.S. Racial disparities in homeownership is at the core of wealth inequality in this country, you can’t separate the two. America is anchored in home and land ownership, always has been, always will be. In fact, for many years, only white men that owned property could vote in the U.S.

Below are several strategies to help grow Black homeownership in the U.S.: Federal Student loan forgiveness for purchasing a home. African Americans are disproportionately impacted by student loan debt forcing many to forgo homeownership. A program that addresses this disparity and forgives student loan debt would help many Black Americans achieve their homeownership dreams.

Create down payment assistance and federal Housing programs for Black descendants of slavery. Currently there are initiatives and dedicated federal housing and mortgage lending programs and incentives for Native Americans, similar efforts should be established for Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC), those that are descendants of slaves in America. Create federal and state homeownership zone programs in communities with persistent low rates of Black homeownership especially in formerly redlined communities. Intentional efforts to invest in rehabilitation of existing homes, coupled with infill housing, funding for homebuyer education, down payment and closing subsidies, special purpose mortgage credit programs, energy efficiency grants, and property tax incentives would have a huge impact on increasing Black homeownership.

Lower mortgage interest rates despite the current historically low rate of Black unemployment in the U.S., high mortgage interest rates are limiting the potential for increasing the growth rate of Black homeownership. According to data from Freddie Mac, there are over 2 million mortgage/credit eligible potential Black American homebuyers in the U.S.

Increasing the number of Black Real Estate Agents, Appraisers, Loan Officers and Underwriters the housing ecosystem sorely lacks diversity. Underrepresentation in these key professions plays a major role in housing discrimination, redlining, bias in mortgage lending, and the undervaluing of properties owned by Black Americans.

It’s important to note that Juneteenth and homeownership month are in the same month. Hopefully, one day, the promise of land and home ownership will be realized equally and equitably for Black Americans.

Praise The Red, The Black & The Green!

This writer was recently going through a lot of pictures and stories as it related to our newest designated national holiday - Juneteenth. Some stories had pictures of blonde, blue eyed, mothers and fathers holding cute, little blonde, blue eyed babies, smiling at the readers while waving a red & blue flag with a white star in the middle, wishing the rest of us a Happy Juneteenth!

Come on, people! What's with the (pardon my expression) whitewashing.of Juneteenth? Juneteenth is a Black celebration of Black people and their hopes and dreams since June 19, 1865, when enslaved Africans were finally told, one year after the fact, that they were free to leave the plantation! The Powers that be decided to reward the state of Texas with an extra year of free slave labor by traveling slowly to Galveston and other slave holding cities, in Texas, with the news of liberation.

The first Jubilation Celebration was held by the Black people of Galveston Texas on June 19, 1866. It has been celebrated in that Texas city every year since then. The Texas State Legislature made the Juneteenth Celebration an official state holiday on January 1, 1980.

African Americans in Buffalo started celebrating Juneteenth in 1976. The Buffalo Juneteenth Festival Committee chose the colors of the Pan African Flag, the red, black and green colors that were chosen by the Honorable President of UNIA, and universal leader, Mosiah Garvey, to represent Black People everywhere. The Buffalo Juneteenth Festival has been held continuously since 1976. During the deadly Covid 19 virus, the in-person street Festival was canceled in 2020 and was held via zoom and other online outlets.

The Juneteenth flag that the state of Texas and the United States Federal Government recognize, is a variation of the red & blue flag with a white star in the middle to represent the state of Texas as the Lone Star State.

In 1997, Ben Haith, the founder of the National Juneteenth Holiday Committee created that flag with the white star in the middle to recognize Texas as the 'home' of the inaugural Juneteenth Festival. The National Juneteenth Holiday Committee said that their flag's white star represents "A New Star For A New People." What new people are they talking about? Certainly not us. Black people have been a part of this nation long before 1620. We do not need the revised flag of the last state to free our enslaved ancestors, to validate our existence or worth.

I have no problem with Galveston Texas or any other cities using the red, blue & white revised flag of Texas to celebrate the holiday. However, this subject came up during one of last year's Buffalo Juneteenth meetings and the Juneteenth Committee voted, at that time, to stick with tradition.

May the glorious Red, Black & Green forever wave to us from flagpoles, lined in formation on Genesee St. and Juneteenth Way, every Juneteenth Holiday for years to come!

Supporting Rights of the Palestinian People is Not Anti-Semitism

Dear Editor:

I recently ran across the following statement in a national publication, which I feel needs to be shared:

“Anti[-semitic hatred was brought to life on October 7 of 2023,” Biden said, by Hamas militants “driven by an ancient desire to wipe out the Jewish people off the face of the earth.” At one point, he equated the attack on October 7 to the Holocaust. “Too many people are denying, downplaying, rationalizing, ignoring the horrors of the Holocaust on October 7, including Hamas’s appalling use of sexual violence to torture and terrorize Jews.”

“This statement is incorrect and dangerous for many reasons, as human rights advocates have pointed out. As a group, Hamas is far from “ancient” — Hamas was established 37 years ago by revolutionaries seeking to liberate Palestine from decades of violent Israeli occupation, ethnic cleansing and apartheid , with an opposition to Zionism, not the Jewish people, as the group established in their 2017 charter.

“Saying that there is an 'ancient desire' to kill Jewish people within the Palestinian resistance, then, implies that Biden believes that Palestinians have an innate desire to oppose Jewish people — an implication that many advocates for Palestinian rights have pointed out is deeply racist, and an accusation that has long been levied against Palestinians in order to justify their slaughter.”

“Our history did not begin in chains. It will not end in chains.”

LEGAL NOTICE

STATE OF NEW YORK COUNTY COURT : COUNTY OF ERIE

IN THE MATTER OF FORECLOSURE OF TAX LIENS BY PROCEEDING IN REM PURSUANT TO THE IN REM PROVISIONS OF THE ERIE COUNTY TAX ACT AND THE RESOLUTION OF THE COUNTY OF ERIE BY THE ERIE COUNTY LEGISLATURE AS SHOWN BY ITEM 4E-22 (2024) PAGES 145-146 OF THE MINUTES OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF SAID LEGISLATURE FOR THE YEAR 2024 PETITION AND NOTICE OF FORECLOSURE OF TAX LIENS BY THE COUNTY OF ERIE BY ACTION IN REM

IN REM NO. 172 INDEX NO. 2024-600166

Please take notice that on the 7th day of May, 2024 the County of Erie pursuant to law, filed with the Clerk of the County of Erie a list of parcels of property affected by unpaid tax liens held and owned by the County of Erie which on such date had been due and unpaid for a period of at least two years after the date on which the unpaid tax liens were sold. Such list contains as to each such parcel (a) a brief description of the property affected by each tax lien, (b) the name of the last known owner of such property as it appears on the latest tax roll in the hands of the Director of Real Property Tax Services or a statement that the owner is unknown if such be the case, (c) a statement of such tax liens upon such parcel of property including any tax sale certificates owned by the County of Erie which shall have been due for less than two years, together with the interest and penalties due as of the list date and (d) a statement that the amount required to redeem any such parcel of property, and the amount to be recovered by the County of Erie, includes all tax sale certificates owned by the County of Erie and affecting such property, together with all interest, penalties, additions and expenses as in this act provided, and also includes an “in rem fee” of $500.00 per parcel to cover the presumptive cost to the County of Erie for reasonable and necessary attorneys’ fees, abstracts of title and other disbursements in connection with such foreclosure pursuant to law.

The above-captioned proceeding was commenced to enforce the payment of delinquent taxes which have accumulated and become liens against certain property. The parcels to which this proceeding applies were identified on the List of Delinquent Taxes which was filed in the Erie County Clerk’s Office on the 7th day of May, 2024. Take further notice that the ownership by the County of the tax sale certificates set forth on the List of Delinquent Taxes is conclusive evidence of the fact that the taxes, assessments and other legal charges represented thereby have not been paid to the County.

EFFECT OF FILING: All persons having or claiming to have an interest in the real property described in the List of Delinquent Taxes are hereby notified that the filing of said List constituted the commencement by the County of Erie of a proceeding in the County Court to foreclose each of the tax liens therein described by a foreclosure proceeding In Rem. Pursuant to Section 11-7.0 of the Erie County Tax Act, the filing of such List of Delinquent Taxes constitutes and has the same force and effect and is deemed to have given the same notice of such foreclosure proceeding as the filing and recording in the Erie County Clerk’s Office of an individual Notice of Pendency of a Tax Foreclosure Action and of the filing in the County Court of a separate and individual Complaint by the County of Erie against the owners of the real property proceeded against and described in the List of Delinquent

Taxes.

NATURE OF PROCEEDING: This proceeding is brought against the real property only and is to foreclose the tax liens described in the List of Delinquent Taxes. No personal judgment will be entered herein for such liens/taxes or other legal charges or any part thereof.

PERSONS AFFECTED: This notice is directed to all persons having or claiming to have an interest in the real property described in the List of Delinquent Taxes. Such persons are hereby notified further that a duplicate of this Petition and the List of Delinquent Taxes has been filed in the Erie County Clerk’s Office and the Office of Real Property Tax Services and will remain open for public inspection up to and including the date specified below as the last day of redemption.

RIGHT OF REDEMPTION: Any person having or claiming to have an interest in any such real property and the legal right thereto may on or before the 8th day of July, 2024 redeem the same by paying the amount of all such unpaid tax liens thereon, including all interest and penalties and other legal charges which are included in the lien against such real property, computed to and including the date of redemption. Payments shall be made to: Director of Real Property Tax Services, Rath Building, 95 Franklin Street, Buffalo, New York, 14202, by CASH, CERTIFIED CHECK, BANK CHECK or MONEY ORDER.

In the event that such tax liens are paid by a person other than the record owner of such real property, the person so paying shall be entitled to have the tax liens affected thereby satisfied of record or to receive an assignment of such tax liens evidenced by a proper written instrument.

LAST DAY OF REDEMPTION: The last day of redemption is hereby fixed as the 8th day of July, 2024.

SERVICE OF ANSWER: Every person having any right, title or interest in or lien upon any parcel of real property described in the List of Delinquent Taxes may serve a duly verified Answer upon the attorney for the Tax District, as set forth below, setting forth in detail the nature and amount of his or her interest, and any defense or objection to the foreclosure. Such Answer must be filed in the office of the County Clerk and served upon the attorney for the Tax District, Margaret A. Hurley, Esq., Lippes Mathias, LLP, 50 Fountain Plaza, Suite 1700, Buffalo, New York, 14202, (716) 884-3135, on or before the 29th day of July 2024.

FAILURE TO REDEEM OR ANSWER: In the event of failure to redeem or answer by any person having the right to redeem or answer, such person shall be forever barred and foreclosed of all his or her right, title and interest and equity of redemption in and to the parcel described in the List of Delinquent Taxes and a judgment in foreclosure may be taken by default.

RISE UP RIGHT SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS

Let's Rise Up

Upstate Lady Predators Football

This past Saturday, Western New York history was made as the Upstate Lady Predators won their first game as a franchise 34-0 over the New Hampshire Rebellion. The players of the game were Charisse Everett, Janeice Love, and Lundyn Benjamin. Both sides of the ball excelled the play calling from the coaching staff was astonishing as the Predators continue to grow as a unit. Next Saturday, the Lady Predators look to add another win to the column against the Maine Mayhem.

WNBA News

The WNBA has been getting plenty of attention thanks to the likes of players such as Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark. The attention that women's basketball has been getting has been so unusual that people are actually now talking about players who should and should not be on the USA basketball team that will be playing in Paris this summer. The players that were selected for this years US basketball team are as follows: A'ja Wilson, Kelsey Plum, Jackie Young, Chelsea Gray, Sabrina Ionescu, Breanna Stewart, Napheesa Collier, Diana Taurasi, Brittney Griner, Kahleah Copper, Jewell Loyd, and Alyssa Thomas. There's a lot of controversy over the fact that Caitlin Clark was not selected but in all honesty she does not belong on the USA team and Angel Reese doesn't either. In order to be on the US basketball team you have to be the top two or three player at your position usually unless you're trying to pull a 1992 USA Dream Team move where you add Christian Laettner instead of Shaquille O'Neal, maybe Reggie Miller, or Tim Hardaway but I'll digress. There were only 12 spots for the team. And if there's anyone who should have been on this list who isn't it should have been Dallas Wings star guard Arike Ogunbowale who is averaging 26 points a game.
