AREA BRIEFS Town Hall Meeting at City Honors To Explain How Survivors of Tops Massacre Can Apply For Part of $3 Million Donation

On May 14, 2022, the Buffalo community suffered a devastating act of violence when a gunman opened fire at the Tops Friendly Market on Jefferson Avenue, killing ten people and wounding three. In partnership with Tops, the National Compassion Fund has established the Buffalo 5/14 Survivors Fund to provide direct financial assistance to the survivors of the deceased and those directly affected by the recent massacre. One hundred percent of the contributions donated to this Fund will go directly to survivors and victims of this tragedy. Donations made to this Fund are tax deductible. A steering committee of more than two dozen community and business leaders led by co-chairs Rev. Mark Blue, president of the Buffalo Branch NAACP and Paul Vukelic, president and CEO of TrIt Distributing Co., will determine how to split the $3 million raised. A Town Hall will be hosted by the local Steering Committee on July 21, 2022 at 6:00pm at City Honors High School, 186 E. North St. to hear public comment on the Draft Protocol and explain the application process. The meeting will be held in-person and streamed live on Facebook. The National Compassion Fund is a subsidiary of the National Center for Victims of Crime, the nation’s leading resource and advocacy organization for crime victims and those who serve them. The National Center for Victims of Crime is a 501(c)3 nonprofit and a leading authority in compensating victims of mass casualty events.

Public Safety Measures Opposed By County Minority Caucus At a recent session of the Erie County Legislature, the Democratic Majority Caucus called on the United States Senate to improve gun safety, including universal background checks and raising the age to purchase certain firearms to 21. Erie County Legislature Chair April Baskin introduced the measure at the session, hoping to send a unified message of support from the county’s legislators to their counterparts in the United States Senate. The resolution received the support of all her Democratic colleagues. “I was honestly disheartened when I saw four hands rise in opposition to a resolution that supported measures to improve gun safety and to protect our community,” said Legislature Chair April N. M. Baskin. “Especially considering the loss of elderly members of our community in the shooting at Tops, and the deaths of the children in Uvalde, Texas. The minority’s vote was a unified stance against providing protection for the public. There has been such a showing of unity in response to the mass shooting on Jefferson Avenue. So many individuals and organizations have stood united with the victims and their families. I believed that most people felt that this was an attack on our community. Their vote tells me that what happened three weeks ago on Jefferson Avenue did not affect them. If it had, they would have voted for simple safety reform. I want to thank the Majority Caucus for their support and responsible approach to governing.”

Face To Face With A Racist Killer: A Survivor's Terrifying Account

T

error doesn’t begin to describe the account that Robia Gary gives when she was shopping on May 14tat Tops Market on Jefferson Avenue and encountered Payton Gendron. She had already checked out when she saw Gendron come through the door at Tops. She witnessed two people get shot and she started running with her 14-year-old daughter. She fell on the floor and wasn’t sure how to get out, so she took a pile of clothes off a rack and laid on top of her daughter and covered themselves up. The account she gives brings tears to the eyes, as she talks about how she coaxed her “baby” to be quiet as they heard the gun shots approaching. Her foot was exposed, and Aaron Salter stepped in front of it to make sure Gendron couldn’t see her. She witnessed Salter shoot Gendron – firing multiple times. She described how the bullets just fall off and hit the ground. Salter stood face to face with Gendron before he became a martyr, but Robia’s encounter didn’t end there. Gendron lifted some of the clothes from her head using the gun. It wasn't until later that realized a burn mark was left, she begged for him to take her life and spare her daughter. Gendron carried on, scoping out who to shoot. His targets were very specific. Some people ran past, and others were hunted down. She described how she took her daughter to a different hiding spot in the store and hid her daughter under cover again. The shots had stopped for a moment, and one of the Tops workers saw her and pointed at a door, she saw someone look out and usher for her. She grabbed her daughter and ran for safety, recognizing him to be a young Black man from her community. The police never announced themselves when they barged into the room with their guns drawn, they only demanded “hands up,” with no regard for the trauma that these people were still going through. Taisiah Stewart has lived in Buffalo for just a short period of time. He moved here with his mom and just got hired at McDonalds. He was in tops when Payton Gendron committed the racist terror attack on the community. Taisiah saw the first two people get shot and bullets flying through the front window. He ran towards the back of the store falling and losing his slides. He dropped his backpack which included his work clothes, shoes and Bluetooth speaker and he dropped his cell phone somewhere along the way. He ran out the back door and ran home barefoot through Dodge and a few other side streets and was treated at the hospital later for injuries to his feet. McDonalds replaced his work clothes and he started working again, he purchased a new cell phone and had some difficulty navigating the resources that are available to help provide some type of assistance with his situation, he doesn’t have insurance for the hospital or mental health that comes along with a traumatic experience. He hasn’t received any of his property back from the investigation, even though it said to have been concluded, at least the crime scene at Tops. Robia is a proud member of the community, and believes God intervened for her that day. She has a good job that has given her time off to deal with the trauma that she has experienced. Her concern is for those in her community that aren’t as fortunate, as in Taisiah’s case. She doesn’t understand why Tops has delayed in refunding her the money that was spent and lost while shopping and both her and Taisiah have questions about property and when it will be returned. Some with medical bills mounting, and others unable to leave their homes due to the trauma, more than anything the surviving victims are people that feel as though they have been forgotten and that Buffalo has turned the page. If you or a loved one is a surviving victim from racist terror attack that took place on 5.14.2022 and in need of advocacy contact BuffaloVictims@gmail.com

The History of Juneteenth According to the Emancipation Proclamation, signed by President Abraham Lincoln, all slaves were declared free as of January 1, 1863. However, those enslaved in Texas remained so until the fall of the Confederacy, and the arrival of U.S. Army general, Gordon Granger at Galveston, TX, on June 19, 1865, where he announced the official end of the heinous crime that targeted those of African descent. The announcement prompted the free men and women to celebrate the total liberation of Black people who were still bound, but living in the “land of the free”. Today, the event is celebrated across America, during the last ‘teen’ week in June, and, in Galveston, TX, June 19, has been an official state holiday, since June 13, 1979.

The Benefits of a Traditional African Diet The traditional African diet the young people are now shying away from had kept older generations better protected nutiritionally thanks to: High Fiber: In their least processed forms, traditional foods are mainly vegetable and plant-based, such as corn, cassava, millet, barley and plantain. Fiber is brilliant for decreasing cholesterol and protecting the digestive system and bowels. It can also be helpful for weight control. Low Sodium traditional cooking relied on herbs and spices. Now with the advent of table salt, it is used in pretty much everything increasing sodium levels which is detrimental to African health as people of African descent are genetically prone to diseases caused by high levels of sodium in the blood such as hypertension. Low Fat Starches, fruit and vegetables contain no fat while meat is leaner than western meat due to the animals living environments being more organic and natural. Natural/Organic Traditionally, organic seeds are used to grow crops; seeds are harvested from the previous year. GM seeds are rare. Animals live free on farms feeding on the pasture side-by-side. Pesticides are rarely used, therefore, chemicals rarely ingested by human consumption. Wholesome Cooking Methods African cooks traditionally did not rely on deep fat fryers and microwaves. African’s steam food in leaves, boil, grill, roast or bake in a fire. Nowadays palm oil cooking has become the norm with young people relying on fast food instead of learning to cook in the traditional way. Variety From Egusi to Pumpkin leaves, plantain, yams to beef to wild game, food choices have always

been well varied, providing an adequate balance of nutrition, ensuring that the body receives all the vital minerals and vitamins needed from general health and well being. source: African Pot Nutrition/Planet Fem.com

5 Ways Black-OwnedByBusinesses Can Secure a Loan Robert Lowery

T

he struggles black business owners experience when accessing capital are nothing new. Minority-owned companies have consistently faced more issues than white-owned businesses when it comes to financing. But that reality can’t stop African Americans from confidently pursuing their entrepreneurial dreams. While the road may be difficult, there are five paths black-owned businesses can take to access capital. 1. Online Lenders Typically, online loan lenders are more flexible than traditional banks regarding eligibility requirements. In some cases, online lenders will provide capital to business owners and startups with bad credit. The Federal Reserve also indicates that minority business owners have a higher chance of accessing capital through online lenders than banks, but the loan will probably cost more. Additionally, loan amounts usually range from $1,000 to $500,000. 2. Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) A CDFI is a great way to access capital. This type of lender is a bank, credit union, or other financial institution that offers loans to minorities and other underserved and economically disadvantaged communities. An excellent example of one is The National Minority Supplier Development Council Business Consortium Fund. It offers minority business loans that range from $100,000 to $750,000. 3. Small Business Administration Lenders The U.S. Small Business Administration offers various types of SBA loans, all of which are issued by banks and other lenders. One of the best financing options is the SBA Community Advantage loan program. This offer is specifically for businesses in underserved communities, and borrowers can access up to $250,000. 4. Nonprofit Microlenders It may sound unconventional, but it’s possible for minority-owned businesses to receive a microloan from a mission-based nonprofit organization. The SBA also works with these nonprofit organizations to provide microloans of up to $50,000. This program can be ideal for black entrepreneurs and minority business owners with imperfect credit scores. 5. Credit Unions and Banks Of course, credit unions and banks typically provide the best business loans. Some of them even have lending programs that are specifically designed for minority-owned companies. But because this route usually includes many obstacles, black business owners need to get creative with how they approach it. Some have found it easier to access capital through credit unions and banks by establishing strong relationships with them as soon as possible. For example, getting a smaller loan and then contacting the institution regularly to develop a relationship can help minorities borrow higher amounts of money in the future. -Black Businesses Are A CornerstoneWhile the road to getting capital may not be straightforward or easy for black entrepreneurs and business owners, it’s worth it. Black-owned companies are a cornerstone of the U.S. economy. The Department of Commerce indicates that these businesses grow faster than non-minorityowned companies, are vital pillars in their communities, and help create well-paying jobs. Hopefully, these benefits will one day show lenders that they should treat black businesses fairly and make access to capital equitable. But until that day arrives, black-owned companies mustn’t give up on confidently pursuing financing and every option available to achieve their entrepreneurial goals. (Mr. Lowery is founder and CEO of RL Experience and host of EmPowwer 716 for

Entrerpreneuers.)

Breaking Myths About Black Fatherhood This Father’s Day

oo many sermons on Father’s Day seem to focus on the Black father’s need to engage his children because he’s shirked responsibility. This viewpoint about black fatherhood is a well-established structure of thought, with a host of supporting beliefs that reinforce it like rebar in a concrete slab: society is devastated because the majority of African American fathers are not at home nor involved in the lives of their children. The solution, therefore, is for Black men to return to their responsibilities. These statements are stereotypes, fabrications and completely wrong. And the impact of these thoughts is girded in the foundations of American society, from systems of education, to access to employment, to incarceration. Fatherlessness is not defined by living arrangement. Josh Levs’s article, “No,

Most Black Kids are not Fatherless” deconstructs the “70% of Black children are fatherless” myth. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report, “Fathers’ Involvement with Their Children” (yes, the CDC tracks data & researches topics like this), verify that the majority of Black fathers actually live with their children (2.5 million versus 1.7 million who don’t). Furthermore, whether living in the same home or not, Black fathers are the most involved of all primary recorded race

and ethnic groups. Many fatherlessness statistics utilize marital and housing statuses as cornerstone metrics, resulting in highly inflated figures. These stats do not account for the fact that men have died or passed away, couples may live together while unmarried, couples may be divorced, and, let’s not forget, that, due to the system of incarceration, men are not only separated from their families but often even prevented from staying in the homes with their families if the housing is federally provided. The New York Times’ 2015 analysis, “1.5 Million Missing Black Men,” gave credence to this shocking reality, presenting loud and clear how our country’s mass incarceration industrial complex has claimed more men than were enslaved in 1850. Statistics about white males with a nearly 40% divorce rate, and significant numbers choosing to have and/or adopt children independently, are entirely immune to the views levied upon African Americans. Research by scholars like Waldo E. Johnson Jr., Ph.D., professor at the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration, leads in efforts to re-educate about Black fatherhood, and also brings notice to the men who stand in as genuine, authentic father figures for children who have lost fathers for whatever reasons. When it comes to conceptualizing African American fatherhood, stereotypes and

Author and Filmmaker Natalie Baszile, a Champion of Black Farming in the United States, to Join Local Black, Immigrant, and Refugee Farmers for Virtual Event, June 21

By Kyle Semmel You may be familiar with Ava DuVernay’s popular television series Queen Sugar, the story of three siblings who inherit their family’s 800-acre farm in rural Louisiana when their father unexpectedly dies. The show, now in production for its seventh and final season to air later this year, is produced by Oprah Winfrey for the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). It’s less well known that Queen Sugar is based on a critically-acclaimed novel of the same name by Natalie Baszile. Like most writers, Baszile faced a steep climb on the path to publishing the novel; if it weren’t for her steely determination, she might’ve given up long before it became a beloved book and TV program. She began writing Queen Sugar in 1999, but didn’t complete it until 2009. During those ten years, she explains, she “had written and revised the novel more than a dozen times.” But it would take hundreds of rejection letters from literary agents and several more drafts before the novel was finally published in 2014. Natalie Baszile In the process of writing Queen Sugar, Baszile, a San Francisco-based writer and filmmaker with Louisiana roots, became deeply invested in issues involving Black farming and food production in the United States. Her work is a celebration of Black farmers, their deep connection to the land, and their significant contributions to agriculture in America. Her latest book, We Are Each Other’s Harvest, which Ibram X. Kendi (Stamped from the Beginning, How to be an Antiracist) called “groundbreaking and amazing,” is a collection of essays, poems, photographs, quotes, conversations, and firstperson stories that reveal the long, rich agricultural history of Black farmers and their connection to American land from Emancipation to today. “How,” Baszile asks pointedly, “could the produce in the market near her university campus where all the white students shopped be so bountiful while the produce in the same supermarket chain just a few blocks away where the Black people shopped be so inferior?” She explores this question at length through the many Black voices in We Are Each Other’s Harvest, including a poem (“Cutting Greens”) by Buffalo’s own Lucille Clifton. And she will join local Black, immigrant, and refugee farmers Allison DeHonney (Buffalo Go Green/Urban Fruits & Veggies), Mahamud Mberwa (Bwedo Farm), Dao Kamara (Liberian Community Farming Project), and Hamadi Ali (Providence Farm Collective) in a special conversation on this question—and more—during a special virtual event on Tuesday, June 21 at 7:00 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Western New York Land Conservancy and Providence Farm Collective (PFC), who are partnering this year on a joint fundraising campaign to provide equitable access to protected farmland for farmers who could not otherwise access land and who have been historically excluded from farmland ownership. When: June 21, 7:00-8:00 p.m.Where: Online. This event is free and open to the public, but in order to receive the link to attend, registration is required.]How to register: visit https://www.wnylc.org/nataliebaszile For further information, call the Western New York Land Conservancy at 716.687.1225.

In The Face of Overwhelming Tragedy, This Yearʼs University United Festival an Undeniable Showing of Unity and Resilience By Matt Bauer

“We are not terrorized and we are not afraid. We are safe, proud, Black and ready to have a good time,” proclaimed Erie County Legislator April Baskin at the commencement of the long-awaited return of the University United Festival this past weekend. And the crowd that packed UB’s Rotary Field for both the R&B-centered Saturday and gospel-themed Sunday received a most welcome dose of musical healing. A short memorial video for the ten lives lost to the racist, domestic terrorist attack on Jefferson Avenue played on the jumbotron screen before Buffalo’s own Uncle Willie rocked a short tribute to classic soul with takes on Maze & Frankie Beverly’s “Joy and Pain” and Marvin Gaye’s “I Want You.” Regrettably, Saturday headliners MYA and The Whispers didn’t appear due to Airline issues, a factor that also resulted in Sunday headliner Fred Hammond not taking the stage, either. But the organizers had an ace up their sleeve with a surprise appearance by the one and only Keith Washington, who caught the red eye from Las Vegas to Buffalo on only a day’s notice. The Detroit-bred Washington sang early 1990s classics like “Kissing You,” “Believe That” and “Stay in My Corner” for the appreciative females in the crowd. Pulses further raced with UNITY: National recording artist Joe accepted a surprise procheartthrob Bobby V (aka Bobby Val- lamation from the City of Buffalo Common Council presented entino) who dropped gems like “Slow during the United Festival by Chairwoman April Baskin and Down” and “Anonymous.” A lovely Councilman Wyatt. photo. A. Dorcely summer sunset was the ideal backdrop for one of R&B’s premier modern day lover men, Joe. His headlining set didn’t disappoint with “I Wanna Know,” “All the Things (Your Man Won’t Do)” and “More and More.” At one point during his set, he noted that he sang his songs for AfricanAmerican women, “to feel better and appreciated”-- a timeless message that seems more urgent than ever. The threat of rain couldn’t dampen the spirit on gospel Sunday. Buffalo’s own D’Mott and Pastor Darius G. Pridgen co-hosted the program. Darcel Blue rendered a poignant, spiritually tinged cover of Mary J. Blige’s “Everything,” before ten balloons were released for those lost while D’Mott delivered a powerhouse set through the rain. The Season Three winner of the BET gospel singing competition show “Sunday Best” and Grammy Award winner Le’Andria Johnson brought the sun out with a transcendent performance. Opening with Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come,” Johnson then turned her set into a “Holy Ghost Party” with an invigorating mash up of “Jesus” and Ray Charles’ “(Night Time is) The Right Time,” which featured Niagara Falls Music Hall of Fame inductee Marsha McWilson among the background singers chosen from the audience. Bishop Cortez Vaughn closed out the afternoon before Fred Hammond appeared via pre-taped video to offer his apologies and a few songs. In the face of overwhelming tragedy, this year’s University United Festival was an undeniable showing of unity and resilience.

Domestic Violence Walk

Baskin and Johnson’s Quest to Make Juneteenth an Official Erie County Holiday Succeeds Erie County Legislators April Baskin and Howard Johnson are pleased to announce that their goal of getting Erie County to acknowledge Juneteenth as an official county holiday has been achieved. Johnson, who represents the 1st Legislative District, and Baskin, who represents the 2nd Legislative District and serves as Chair of the Legislature, first proposed making Juneteenth an official county holiday in June 2021. Their resolution received unanimous support from their colleagues in the Legislature and was forwarded to the Poloncarz administration. Last week, Poloncarz announced that Juneteenth will be recognized as a county holiday beginning on June 20 of this year. As with other county holidays, county buildings will be closed and county employees will receive a paid day off. “I am thrilled Juneteenth will be observed by Erie County as an official holiday,” said Erie County Legislature Chair April Baskin. “May 14th shed more light on the fact that Black and African American residents need their local government to act with urgency when it comes to protecting Black residents and preserving Black culture. I believe that Erie County should have taken this step back in 2021 via executive powers. I am looking forward to celebrating Juneteenth as an official countywide holiday, and I look forward to Erie County doing more to honor the history and contributions of Black citizens.” “The Juneteenth Festival has been a cornerstone of Buffalo’s Black community for almost half a century,” noted Erie County Legislator Howard Johnson. “I am happy that Erie County will be joining Buffalo and New York State in marking it as an official holiday. This is about more than just another day off. Our official holidays speak to our values as a community, whether honoring the lives of individuals or acknowledging the contributions of groups who have made a singular impact on our history and way of life.”

In honor of Allison Michelle Turner (Allie) the community is invited to come together and support our girl. Stand up against Domestic Violence ! The Path Forward from May 14: Insights from Black leaders within Roswell Park Part 2 Conclusion‘Racism will not be tolerated’ Michael Johnson, Director of Government and Community Relations, helped work with then-State Senator Byron Brown to ensure that the Tops location on Jefferson Avenue was built. His wife grew up in the neighborhood around the store, which “holds a very special place in my heart,” says Johnson.

“(That Tops is) a community gathering place. I’m very sad and angry that someone chose that place to inflict this horror on this community,” he says, noting the importance of Roswell Park’s commitment to assist and support our neighbors, “not just those fighting cancer but the people who live nearby.” “In this horrible moment, we have the opportunity, all of us, to stand together, shoulder to shoulder, and present a united front. When America has faced shocking tragedy before, we have been united in our grief and committed to making our world a better place,” says Errol Douglas, Senior Vice President of Human Resources. “It is time for that same response, to meet hate with love and division with unity and support. “ “What’s important right now is for people on the East Side of Buffalo to know that we are with them and to acknowledge the racism behind this and that it’s wrong,” says Craig Pridgen, Organizational Development Advisor, who spoke out passionately during a moment of

silence held at Roswell Park the Monday following the tragedy in tribute to the lives lost and community shattered. “Racism will not be tolerated. We’re here for you and with you in this time.” This month, Roswell Park hosted a drive with the Resource Council of Western New York to collect food and in-demand supplies for those most closely affected by the May 14 attack. FATHERS DAY continued about Black fatherhood, and also brings notice to the men who stand in as genuine, authentic father figures for children who have lost fathers for whatever reasons. When it comes to conceptualizing African American fatherhood, stereotypes and anecdotal experience pair with inflated data to produce a dish that is as superficial as the fraudulent images of fast food we see in marketing ads. The dish is served, and sadly consumed, so often that even gubernatorial and presidential candidates eat it up and perpetually reserve it to audiences. This must stop. The impact of this superficiality makes its way into policy and law formation, curriculum access and discipline in our education systems, law enforcement profiling and use of force, biases in court-based custody decisions; and many more unknown and unseen implicit ways in which society perceives Black males. And, rather than focusing on the root cause of structural, institutional and implicit racialization, violence, poverty and general lack is scapegoated onto the backs of Black fathers. As we approach Father’s Day, when the horrific 70% statistic is utilized so often, I urge our religious and congregational leaders to respeak the narrative. Speak to the power of how millions of African American men and dozens of programs are shedding light on the actual truth: most Black children are not fatherless and Black American fatherhood is very much alive! Buffalo’s Juneteenth History

A

ccording to Juneteenth of Buffalo former president Marcus Brown, the original vision for a Juneteenth celebration was inspired by members of the BUILD organization, who were unsettled and disparaged with America’s version of freedom, celebrated across the United States on July 4. Mindful of the fact that the ‘freedom’ afforded the colonists did not include those of African descent who remained enslaved by Europeans in this new, ‘free’ nation, the BUILD team committed to research until they discovered an event in American history that celebrated the freedom of Black people. The events in Galveston, Texas in June 1865 surfaced and the BUILD team got busy, educating the community about that period; and the rest is history. This team, the founders of Juneteenth of Buffalo, included among others, Judson Price, Doug Ruffin, Sr., Claudia Sims, and Mary Robinson. They organized and implemented the first Buffalo Juneteenth celebration in June 1976, on Jefferson Ave. – the “main street- of Buffalo’s Black community. Black Buffalo celebrated with their families in an atmosphere of festivities, food, fun, live music, and street dancing; all aimed toward improving our cultural awareness. The group blocked off Jefferson where Murals were painted and vendors set up booths to sell ethnic foods and wares. Entertainment and festivity was abundant. However after several years the festival outgrew the Jefferson festival corridor and the event was moved to Fillmore Ave. and ultimately to Martin Luther King Park where it remains to this day. The park covers approximately 50 acres (2,178,000 sq. feet!) with activities and entertainment for all ages; cultural consciousness events; a health fair; book giveaway; and a kick-off parade that is unmatched by any other parade of its kind.

IT CAN BE DONE!!!! Often you hear us on We the Parents Radio Show and Podcast discuss issues that we believe are affecting our children in a negative way. We use our platform to inform and discuss with parents and concerned citizens the things we believe they need to know. One of our biggest issues we have been focusing on recently is attendance. Flat out we have an attendance problem in our schools. Aymanuel But that’s not true for every student RADFORD and when we find the parents and students who do understand the importance of attendance it’s our job as a community to shine a light on them as the example for all the community to see. Israel Wilson a student at School #81 has not missed a day of school since Pre-K!!!!! You read that right pre-k! Israel is an outstanding young student athlete in our community who plays football, basketball, bowling and baseball. He has been a merit roll student throughout his entire academic career and has been accepted to Timon, St. Joes and Da Vinci. Israel is a shining example of what we want our students to be, and we want to make sure we take this time to appreciate him and tell him job well done. We hope Israel and his mom Latrice Martin gets the recognition they deserve not only from the community but also from the Buffalo Public School System. Israel Wilson Job well done Israel and Mrs. Martin we look forward to big things from you in the future!!

Reflections on the Massacre of the Buffalo 10 & Racism

T

he moment I learned of the shooting at Tops Friendly Market in Buffalo, I was shocked and saddened, which turned to anger and then disgust. I knew many of the persons killed and even campaigned door to door with Kat Massey and gave her a ride home in my car. In fact, going to the site of Tops was beyond painful. The Massacre of the Buffalo Ten took the lives of innocent people, shattering the lives of their families and the community. The Massacre shed a much-needed national spotlight on the severe neglect of the area, far beyond the fact that there was only one major supermarket in the neighborhood. Tops on Jefferson Avenue located in Buffalo’s Black Belt In the late 1990s as a young 27-year-old activist and community leader, I attended numerous neighborhood meetings and forums about bringing a supermarket to the East Side of Buffalo. For many years, residents tried to start a food co-op called “Our Market.” While the plan for the food co-op was unsuccessful, their persistence would lead to Tops opening on the historic Jefferson Avenue in 2003. Jefferson Avenue was once the economic and cultural center of Buffalo’s Black Community. The heart of Buffalo’s Black community is located in zip code 14208. According to the U.S. Census, over 75% of the zip code’s residents are Black and it has a high concentration of Black churches and Black led institutions. This area is vote rich for candidates, often providing the boost needed to elect Black candidates to the school board, city council, mayoral office, state legislature and judgeships. It is not uncommon to see political leaders, clergy, and business leaders shopping or campaigning at the Tops on Jefferson Avenue. In fact, this is the very neighborhood where I launched my own political career as a Buffalo Council Member and NY State Senator. Racism, Redlining Rampant in Buffalo & Around Tops Anyone that googles Black and Buffalo will quickly learn that Black residents top many of the worst lists for health issues, homes with lead paint, and racial disparities in homeownership and business ownership. There are only two banks in 14208, despite all of the political influence in the neighborhood. Residents struggle to get access to mortgages for the purchase of a home, and those that do get approved often get outbid by out-of-town investors and speculators who seek to make them renters instead. According to data from Compliance Tech, Black homebuyers in Buffalo are twice as likely to be denied a mortgage loan compared to White homebuyers. Housing rehabilitation loans and grants from the public and private sectors are also difficult to obtain, driving residents to surrender their properties in housing court, tax foreclosure sales or investors. A quick drive or walk down Laurel or Landon, streets that are adjacent to the Tops on Jefferson, and one can clearly see the need for an infusion of public and private assistance to help property owners fix roofs, porches, siding and perform general upkeep on countless homes. This problem of disinvestment is not unique to Black Buffalo, it is a national crisis. Time to Restore Hope Many Black residents in Buffalo have been waiting for Buffalo’s so-called social and economic renaissance to reach areas like 14208. Since 2004, over $10 billion has been invested by the public and private sectors in Buffalo. Unfortunately, as one of the most politically powerful areas of the city of Buffalo, and state of New York, 14208 is lagging in investment and economic growth. Hopefully, Jefferson Avenue will not be left behind like it was after the Riots in 1968 following the Assassination of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. Today, just as it was back then, many hearts are heavy, spirits are broken, and the community is weary. It is time for leaders to offer a bold vision to Restore Hope and deliver results that transform lives, families, and communities. In the 1970s it was the Jefferson Commercial Urban Revitalization Area (CURA), in the 1990s it was the Jefferson Renaissance. I ask you, “What’s the bold vision this time?” Antoine M. Thompson is a native of Buffalo, a former NYS State Senator (Buffalo, NY), a former Buffalo City/Common Council Member. Dear Editor: As we think of it, our other local racist massacre of Our Black Beloveds, was one in which the perpetrators were INVITED to commit the heinously atrocious act. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner's distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services.
