Guaranteed Basic Income (GBI) Program for Qualified City Residents

Mayor Malik D. Evans announced the launch of the City of Rochester’s Guaranteed Basic Income (GBI) Program. Qualified city residents will be able to apply starting at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 22, through 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, June 29. Financed by $2.2 million of the City’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, Rochester’s GBI program will provide a monthly payment of $500 to 351 individuals for 12 months.

The payments are unconditional, which means that there are no strings attached, no work requirements, and no restrictions on how the money can be spent. “Rochester’s GBI program has the potential to create significant opportunities for our residents to not only survive, but to thrive,” said Mayor Evans. “We continue to work to take our city from a poverty mindset to a prosperity mindset, and to prioritize the well-being and economic stability of our community. GBI is one more program helping to do that.”

Applicants to the GBI program must meet all qualification criteria:

•Must be 18 years of age or older;

Niagara Falls Mayoral Candidate Demetreus Nix: An Agent For Change

Astone’s throw away from Buffa lo, a young Black man is shaking things up in Niagara falls.

Far from your traditional political office seeker, local contractor Demetreus Nix could well be a poster child for resilience.. Having overcome his troubled past, he paid his debt to society, returned home to the Falls and has since spent his time giving back to a community he both loves and understands.

THE GRAND FINALE

Few took him serious when he first announced he was running for mayor earlier this year. Then he and his team collected 700 signatures –only to have them thrown out by the Niagara County Board of Elections. That’s when Hicks went into action.

The founder of WAWG (“WE ALL WE GOT”) and the Entrepreneur School of Thought in the heart of the Black community, he took his case to court and won after a judge validated their nominating petitions, giving him and his running mate, city council candidate Uniquia Lewis, spots on the June Democratic primary ballot.

The purpose-driven Nix makes it clear that he is not running as a traditional candidate with support from traditional political parties. He sees himself as an advocate/agent for change for the people of Niagara Falls. If he should win, he said the first thing he would do is request more money from Albany for the Falls. His platform also includes solving the crime issue

Demetreus acknowledges that its been “a battle from day one where every obstacle was thrown in my way.”

But he and his running mate overcame and are very much in the race. According to his Facebook page, they are currently busy getting out the early vote, and have registered up to 1,023 new voters. An impressive number to say the least.

Early voting ends Sunday, June 25. Primary Election Day is Tuesday June 27. Nix faces incumbent Mayor Rob Restaino and Glenn Choolokian, a city worker

Ribbon Cutting Held for the New Headquarters and Visitor Center for Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor

The Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor recently held a ribbon cutting for the Corridor’s new headquarters and visitor center. Establishing a home for the not-forprofit Commission in the Corridor at 136 Broadway—a key objective of the Corridor’s Strategic Plan completed in 2022—will make it easy for people to navigate the various historic sites in the corridor and participate in a variety of events and activities. Those sites include the Michigan Street Baptist Church, the J. Edward Nash House Museum, the Colored Musicians Club, and the WUFO Black History Collective.

Miss Barbara D. Glover, founder of Miss Barbara's School of Dance, is celebrating the final farewell to the iconic dance school after 57 years of service to her community and the City of Buffalo. "The Grand Finale," will be held Friday June 30 from 6-8 p.m. at 1832 Main Street in the Delavan Station Plaza. It will be hosted by the Hon. Rose H. Sconiers and Trustee Ernestine Green.

The Ocoee Election Day Massacre: The Nation's Worst Instance of Election Day Violence

New York State provided a $2.3 million grant for acquisition of the 20,433 square foot mixed-use building, which contains two commercial storefronts, three upper floor apartments and an adjoining parking lot. The building will include offices and workspace for Commission staff, a visitor center, public restrooms, and a small pop-up gift shop.

The parking lot will serve the headquarters and will also facilitate hosting events and activities of the corridor’s anchor institutions and Corridor-wide events, including a weekly farmers’ market, food truck events, small concerts, and fundraising activities. A mural highlighting Black history is also planned to be commissioned on the east side wall of the building, which faces Michigan Avenue. Terry Alford is Director of the Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor Lillie Wiley-Upshaw is Chair of the Heritage Corridor Commission Board.”

A prominent Ocoee resident, July Perry was beaten, shot and lynched as a warning to other Black citizens who dared to vote. He was one of the 30 to 80 residents killed and whose homes were burned down during the Ocoee massacre in 1920.

In 1920 the nation’s worst instance of election day violence took place in Ocoee, Florida known as the Ocoee Election Day Massacre.

In the early 1900s, Black people were moving in from the Carolinas, Georgia and Alabama to Ocoee, Florida. They found opportunity in the fruit-bearing land of Orange County and bought parcels of citrus groves and made them flourish.

By 1920, some Black Ocoee residents were driving nice cars and planning to send kids to college. One of them, July Perry, had become a prominent businessman who would help broker land deals and arrange work for people. He also began registering Black residents to vote.

The test of acceptance came with the 1920 presidential election: Republican Warren Harding versus Democrat James Cox. The NAACP actively registered Black voters throughout Florida. John

HEALTH MATTERS

Welcome Summertime!

June 21 Marked the Beginning of Summer. Here’s What it Means Beyond Warm Weather and Sunny Skies!

The Summer solstice represents the transition from action to nourishment, which is exactly what the Sun gives us during the long nights of summer, both to our actual crops but also to the continual journey we travel from darkness to light. Summer reminds us that there is hope in the world, that the light within can spread to the far reaches of the globe and inspire others.

We can nurture others, just as the Sun nurtures us. Summer becomes a time to work on ourselves and our ability to be the light and find meaning in our journey, even when it seems uncertain. This is the rhythm of nature; new beginnings transition into a period of uncertainty. During this time, it is easy to fall prey to anxiety and worry. Big shifts also cause old energies to surface and darkness can easily take over our mind.

Summer is the time to develop faith in our life, squash the darkness with light, and trust that just like the Sun, we will rise each day no matter what life brings us.

-Express Gratitude-

Expressing gratitude is a good thing to do any day, but especially on a Solstice. Write gratitude statements for everything that you already possess and everything that you want to come your way. Part of the manifestation process is to actually feel gratitude for what we want before we even have it. Through this act, we are telling the universe we trust that our wishes will be fulfilled and the very act will call in the energy we desire.

SUMMERTIME HEALTH!

Summer is a time of joy, celebration, expansiveness, connectedness, reaching outward as we thrive on the sun’s light and the increase in yang energy. Take advantage of this with outdoor exercise, socializing, visits to the beach, nature hikes, outdoor festivals and travel. Also take advantage of fresh produce which is now readily available – especially watery foods such as ripe fruit and leafy green salads to balance the excess yang of sum available.

The organs associated with summer, which we should be careful to look out for, include the heart (the center of compassion which stores the spirit reflected in the brightness of the eyes and is associated with insight love, faith and creativity), gums, small intestine and blood vessels.

FOODS FOR SUMMER

Here are some health summer foods: Apples, watermelon, salads, sprouts, fruit, cucumber, lemons, limes, Mung beans , mung bean sprouts, tofu, tempeh, lentils, rye, oats, amaranth, radish, other legumes and peas, garlic, cabbage, spinach, dandelion greens, kale, broccoli, parsley, asparagus, bell pepper, rosehips, tomato, celery, seaweeds, almonds, hazelnuts, flaxseed walnuts, raw honey, peppermint.

Foods to Avoid: When possible avoid heavy foods in summer or at least cut back on meat, eggs, fatty foods. Be your best healthy self this summer season!

JALIL MUNTAQIM ATTENDS CONFERENCE IN

VENEZUELA: Rochester-based activist Jalil Muntaqim was recently invited by Camilla Saab, the spouse of the kidnapped Venezuelan Diplomat, Alex Saab, to attend the international conference titled: "LAWFARE ARE AGAINST VENEZUELA: THREE YEARS AFTER THE KIDNAPPING OF DIPLOMAT ALEX SAAB." This conference, sponsored by the Free Alex Saab Movement, brought activists and revolutionaries from as far as Canada, Slovenia, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Spain, Nigeria, England and the United States, to name a few. Jalil is pictured with Carlos Ron, Venezuela's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for North America and President of the Simon Bolivar Institute for Peace and Solidarity Among Peoples.

Justice Department Finds Civil Rights Violations by the Minneapolis Police

Confirming widespread suspicions, an investigation by the Department of Justice (DOJ) has determined that the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) as well as the city of Minneapolis have not only been engaging in a pattern of racist behavior but have also done so while being abusive to mostly Black and brown people.

The DOJ findings come more than three years after city police officer Derek Chauvin used his knee to apply deadly pressure to the neck of George Floyd, who was handcuffed at the time and insisting he couldn’t breathe as stunned onlookers recorded video footage of the murder.

In particular, the DOJ found that MPD routinely employs “excessive force, including unjustified deadly force and unreasonable use of tasers; Unlawfully discriminates against Black people and Native American people in its enforcement activities, including the use of force following stops;” and “Violates the rights of people engaged in protected speech.” As a result of its findings, the DOJ said that it and the city of Minneapolis have entered into a consent decree “to resolve the [DOJ’s] findings.”

Ahead Of Juneteenth, DeSantis Slashes Funding For Black History Programs In Florida

He also vetoed $5 million in funding that was secured for antigun violence groups by state Democrats.

NEWSONE -- Ron DeSantis the good governor of Florida slashed his state’s approved budget on last Thursday, even though he apparently didn’t need to, and the casualties of his veto pen included millions in funding for Black history projects and gun violence prevention programs. According to Tampa Bay Times, DeSantis cut about $510 million from a $117 billion budget, which was approved unanimously by the state Legislature. Ultimately, what he cut regarding Black history programs was only a tiny fraction, but that does beg the question: Why cut it at all?

I’m writing on behalf of my daughter Ke’Aira Hudson who was ignored by the Cheektowaga Police despite crying out for help multiple times. Ke’Aira was gunned down by her husband - who was abusive towards herand shot and killed in front of her three children in her SUV on the morning of October 5 , 2022. My daughter deserves justice and so do her children. Prior to being murdered she did the right thing by calling on the law – even sharing video of the abuse inflicted upon her by her husband and expressing the fear that she might die. So why did she get used as a pawn? Where is the Justice for my sweet daughter KeAira Hudson? We the family will not give up! We will love you always and forever Ke’Aira!

POETRY homage to my hips

these hips are big hips they need space to move around in. they don't fit into little petty places. these hips are free hips. they don't like to be held back.

these hips have never been enslaved, they go where they want to go they do what they want to do.

these hips are mighty hips. these hips are magic hips. i have known them to put a spell on a man and spin him like a top!

Where's the Emergency Snow Plan?

The Buffalo Blizzard placed a huge toll on residents which caused a tragic loss of life, to the residents of our city who lost loved ones during the Christmas Holiday. What lessons were learned from this storm? City officials say the same thing: it was a huge mess to clean up.

I had the opportunity to review the BFD union 282 report of the killer storm that ravished our city. A question on the report simply asks, “is no one responsible for what occurred during the blizzard, that took its toll in lives lost?” Community members, I request that you if you are able, to go online and see with your own eyes the information presented by the fire dept.

As we all know snow storms are nothing new to Buffalo. However The BPD, states that they were not prepared for this storm. The report also states that Buffalo Fire and Police were ill equipped to house stranded residents. Also fire officials state due to the lack of preparations, trucks were stuck in snow and ice. Staffing was also effected due the storm.

The BFD believes that the city should develop a command center to connect city departments with the Emergency manager to coordinate inter departmental efforts. That can be done if the city starts taking money that comes from the federal government and use it for its intended purpose and stop wasting tax payers dollars on certain select parts of the city. I call on the Buffalo Fire Dept to further explain to the residents the neglect of the fire commissioner who was on vacation in Florida when the storm hit. Let's ask him why he has never established an emergency plan for the killer storm of 2022? I’m Just Saying.

BLACK HISTORY: THE OCOEE MASSACRE continued from page 3

Cheney, a White attorney and former judge running for U.S. Senate, strongly encouraged Black residents in Orange County to exercise their right.

India Walton is Qualified to Lead the Masten District!

One should vote for India Walton for Masten District Councilmember if they want a Councilmember who will work with them to improve the quality of life for all who live or work in the district.

I am voting for India Walton because I know she will fight for our fair share of resources from City Hall.

I am voting for India Walton because she has been on the battlefield, side by side with me, as we fought for Cariol Holloman-Horne's Buffalo Police Department's pension and the exoneration of John Walker, Darryl Boyd and the Buffalo 5.

I am voting for India Walton because she marched, hand in hand with me, as we protested the vicious murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis and the murders of numerous, young, Black men in Buffalo.

I am voting for India Walton because my home is now in the Masten District and I want a Councilmember who will fight for my family and community and not align themselves with out of town, special interest groups.

I am voting for India Walton because she is Unbought and Unbossed and will not allow herself to be controlled by corrupt or compromised politicians who do not have the interest of our Eastside communities at heart.

Lucille Clifton remains one of the most important poets of the 20th century. Born in Depew, Clifton grew up on Purdy Street on Buffalo’s East Side and graduated from Fosdick-Masten Park High School (now City Honors). In her lifetime, Clifton published 14 collections of poetry and a memoir edited by Toni Morrison, as well as 18 books for children. Her numerous awards include three Pulitzer Prize nominations, an Emmy Award, a Coretta Scott King Award, and the National Book Award. Clifton was the first Black woman ever to receive the distinguished Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize for lifetime achievement.

The “Spirit of Inspiration” dedication, designed by internationally acclaimed artist Olalekan Jeyifous, inspired by the life and legacy of Lucille Clifton. will be held today (Thursday, June 22 ) at 5:30 p.m. at The Reading Park at Central Library, 1 Lafayette Square.

Cheney received a letter saying if any Black residents attempted to vote “there will be serious trouble.” The daughter of a prominent white Ocoee official would tell a researcher nearly 50 years later that “90 percent of all law enforcement officers, judges, public servants and lawyers in Winter Garden and Ocoee were Klan members.”

The KKK held parades around the state in a show of intimidation three days before the election,” according to historians. The cultural touchstones of the time were being threatened — White supremacy among them. When that happens, it creates angst, sometimes in the form of violence.”

The exact sequence of events on November 2, 1920, but most accounts agree on this montage: Mose Norman pulled his car up to the Ocoee polling precinct that morning to vote. He was denied and drove to Orlando to tell Cheney, who told Norman to go back and take the names of anyone suppressing his right. When Norman returned to Ocoee with Cheney’s message, gunshots were fired. Norman escaped. That night and into the next morning, Col. Sam Salisbury rallied a mob of as many as 200 white men from around the region to find Norman. They surrounded the home of Norman’s friend, July Perry. More gunfire ensued. The people living in Ocoee’s Black community ran for safety. Some were caught. Some were shot. Some were never heard from again.

Perry was beaten, shot, jailed, dragged and lynched.

Stories over the years have said between 30 and 80 Black people died that night. Armstrong Hightower hid in the citrus groves with his sister. His description 80 years later would paint a vivid picture of the particulars and substance: “That’s the night the devil got loose in Ocoee.”

The fires set by the mob burned a hellish hole right through the Black community. Norman fled to Stuckey, Florida, and then to Harlem. Perry’s wife escaped to Tampa with their teenage daughter, Coretha. Another man, John Hickey had to abandon his 120 acres and his dreams.

The 1920 census says 255 Black residents and 560 white residents lived in Ocoee. With-in months of the Election Day massacre, no more than two Black residents remained. From the 1930s into the 1970s, not a single Black person lived in the city. Few would even go near it as the eerie silence permeated the entire region.

Author Zora Neale Hurston penned a story in 1939 titled The Ocoee Riot, which wasn’t published until 1989.

(Excerpted from “The Truth Laid Bare,” a report from Pegasus, the magazine of the University of Central Florida By Robert Stephens)

I am voting for India Walton because she, along with this writer, warned the community about the negative effects of gentrification long before it happened and now many potential homeowners have been priced out of the housing market regardless of whether they want to rent or own their homes. ... Currently, many struggling, low income household families are paying up to 50% of their budget on housing. That is unacceptable, especially when many of the city's poverty stricken children are eating their first and last daily meals at school because the measly allocation of food stamps has long been spent and consumed.

In conclusion, I am voting for India Walton because Masten Matters and it is, once again, time to have a Masten District Councilmember like former Councilmember Antoine Thompson, in Making Things Happen and Getting Things Done.

Early Voting began Saturday, June 17 and continues thru Sunday, June 25th. A voter can vote anywhere there is a voting site in Erie County during the Early Voting period. The Democratic Primary is Tuesday, June 27th. Voters must vote in the election district they reside in, during the primary.

VOTE INDIA WALTON!

EFFECT OF FILING: All persons having or claiming to have an interest in the real property described in the List of Delinquent Taxes are hereby notified that the filing of said List constituted the commencement by the County of Erie of a proceeding in the County Court to foreclose each of the tax liens therein described by a foreclosure proceeding In Rem. Pursuant to Section 11-7.0 of the Erie County Tax Act, the filing of such List of Delinquent Taxes constitutes and has the same force and effect and is deemed to have given the same notice of such foreclosure proceeding as the filing and recording in the Erie County Clerk’s Office of an individual Notice of Pendency of a Tax Foreclosure Action and of the filing in the County Court of a separate and individual Complaint by the County of Erie against the owners of the real property proceeded against and

described in the List of Delinquent Taxes.

NATURE OF PROCEEDING: This proceeding is brought against the real property only and is to foreclose the tax liens described in the List of Delinquent Taxes. No personal judgment will be entered herein for such liens/taxes or other legal charges or any part thereof.

PERSONS AFFECTED: This notice is directed to all persons having or claiming to have an interest in the real property described in the List of Delinquent Taxes. Such persons are hereby notified further that a duplicate of this Petition and the List of Delinquent Taxes has been filed in the Erie County Clerk’s Office and the Office of Real Property Tax Services and will remain open for public inspection up to and including the date specified below as the last day of redemption.

Payments shall be made to: Director of Real Property Tax Services, Rath Building, 95 Franklin Street, Buffalo, New York, 14202, by CASH, CERTIFIED CHECK, BANK CHECK or MONEY ORDER. In the event that such tax liens are paid by a person other than the record owner of such real property, the person so paying shall be entitled to have the tax liens affected thereby satisfied of record or to receive an assignment of such tax liens evidenced by a proper written instrument.

LAST DAY OF REDEMPTION: The last day of redemption is hereby fixed as the 5th day of July, 2023.

SERVICE OF ANSWER: Every person having any right, title or interest in or lien upon any parcel of real property described in the List of Delinquent Taxes may serve a duly verified Answer upon the attorney for the Tax District, as set forth below, setting forth in detail the nature and amount of his or her interest, and any defense or objection to the foreclosure.
