Rochester's Dr. Aycock Named To National Commission on Mental Health
Monroe County Executive Adam Bello has announced that Dr. April Aycock, director of the county’s Office of Mental Health, is among 14 mental health professionals from around the country chosen as part of the National Association of Counties’ (NACo) new Commission on Mental Health and Wellbeing.
The group is tasked with leading the development of policy and program recommendations at the federal, state and local levels to address systemic issues contributing to the nation’s growing mental health crisis.
“Dr. Aycock’s experience in behavioral health, substance use disorders and in health care settings makes her perfect for this role. She will help shape a nation-wide response to the growing issues of mental health in our country through an equitable lens,” said County Executive Bello. “Monroe County is proud to have Dr. Aycock represent our county and effect lasting change in our mental health systems.”
According to NACo, the commission will:
*Raise national awareness around the challenges and innovations associated with addressing mental health at the county level
*Pursue federal policy action around Mental Health Parity standards, reforms to policies that limit Medicaid spending on inpatient mental health care services, ensuring states have the option to provide Medicaid coverage for behavioral health treatment of pre-trial detainees
*Create an intergovernmental partnership that connects mental health leaders at the local, state and federal levels *Lead a con-

MASTEN MATTERS
So far so good. It appears the race for the Masten District Council Seat will be hard fought yet civil. Although it’s still early and we expect others to enter the race - right now all eyes are on the two front runners – Zeneta Everhart and India Walton.
“We've always had a good relationship. The thing is I'm running for Masten. I'm not running against India. She is not running against me. ... This seat belongs to the people of the Masten District."
-Zeneta Everhart
This is my city, Masten is home, and this is where my family is,” said Zeneta Everhart when she announced her candidacy for the Masten District council seat.
“I never thought I would find myself putting my name forward, but I know that I can make a difference for my community. Buffalo is rebounding, but when 27% of our city lives in poverty, that’s not enough. These past few years have pulled back the curtain on the inequities that permeate through and divide our city. I want to bring us together, to unite our communities, and to look forward to a new, fresh, vibrant Masten that improves lives for the families who are here now and who have stuck it through the hard times. My pledge to my community is that I will never forget where I came from or how I got here, and I will fight every single day for the community that raised my son.”
In addition to her son Zaire, parents Paula and Charles, sister Janita, and brother Charles Jr., Zeneta was joined by community leaders including Stephanie Barber-Geter who have seen firsthand what she has accomplished.
“Zeneta Everhart represents an emerging new voice of activism for this generation,” said Stephanie Barber-Geter, Chairperson of the Restore Our Community Coalition. "We have witnessed her bravery, clarity, and courage through her roles as a parent and a neighbor. Her razor-sharp focus on issues that matter most to families and community affirms our confidence in her ability to represent the Masten District with distinction and results.”
At her announcement, Zeneta was endorsed by New York State Senator Tim Kennedy.
“Zeneta has planted deep roots throughout Masten District. She has spearheaded critical policy in my office, including shaping legislation that would create the Office of Racial Equity & Social Justice. But more than her public service, Zeneta is a mother, a friend, a sister, and a compassionate, glass-half-full eternal optimist. She’s a leader, a listener, and a changemaker. It’s because of that I know she will be an amazing representative for the residents of Masten District, and I’m so incredibly proud to endorse her.”
Zeneta Everhart, a Buffalo native, community advocate, and single mom, has established herself in the community with the founding of Senator Kennedy’s Single Mom’s Club. In the wake of the domestic terror attack at the Jefferson Avenue Tops, where Zaire was shot while at work, Everhart has rededicated herself to combating gun violence locally, statewide, and nationally. She testified before Congress, voicing a demand from moms across the nation. With

-India Walton
When India Walton decided to run for Mayor in 2021 she said she did so because she was tired of seeing her community in the condition that it was in.
The nurse and community activist, who ran as a progressive, was a newcomer to electoral politics. However she succeeded in making a name for herself after defeating entrenched incumbent Byron Brown in an upset primary victory during the hotly contested race; even gaining national attention and support.
The campaign was brutal. Although she lost in the general, she still managed to win in three of the city’s seven council districts. One of them was Masten, Brown’s home base.
“I decided before the smoke cleared that November that my next move would be to run for Masten,” she recalled. “I won Masten. It’s the Blackest district in the city. Everything I’ve ever done in my professional and personal career has been for Black folks. People who look like me.”
“I’ve learned a lot in these last two years,” she continued, noting that she’s been mentored and coached by people on city, county, state, national and federal government levels and abroad. The experience she feels, puts her in an even better position to be “a strong representative…an independent voice and thinker” for her community. India, who is 40 years young, has been doing consultant work and lectures around the country, and has a speaking engagement at Harvard later this month. A first time home owner, she recently closed on a house in the Masten District in Hamlin Park where she lives with her four sons.
“I’ve been quiet but I’ve been busy,” She said. But never too busy for her community she added. "People still call and I show up and make sacrifices...and I stand proudly on that."
When the current councilmember Ulysees Wingo announced he was not running for re-election it came as a surprise to many. But not to India.
“I wasn’t shocked at all,” she said. “I’m not this rogue thug they tried to make me out to be. Before I even made the final decision to run for Masten I talked to him. I told him first.”
Shortly after he made his announcement, Zeneta Everhart threw her hat in the ring.
Most recently Everheart received the endorsement of the

CORA P. MAHONEY
Elected Buffalo's first female council member, first Democrat ever to be elected in the Masten District, and the first Black to be elected in the district in twenty years.
Born in Kansas City, Cora P. Maloney had been active in Kansas Democratic politics before moving to Buffalo with her husband and becoming involved in the Democratic Party in this city. In 1957, she was sworn in as a committeewoman in the Sixth District of the 13th ward. She made history, when in the same year; she was elected as Buffalo's first Councilwoman, the first Democrat ever to be elected in the Masten District, and the first African American to be elected in the district in twenty years. She did not have the party endorsement for her first election. She was re-elected in 1959. Several months prior her death, Mrs. Maloney was endorsed by the Democratic Executive Committee for Councilmanat-large, making her the first African American to be endorsed by a major political party for a city-wide elective office. Mrs. Maloney expressed her political creed as follows, "I'm a feminist. Women are the watchdogs of civilization. It's always a feminine voice which cries for better government and better social laws."

Roswell Park, Tops Team Up For Community Outreach Sessions
Furthering our commitment to the Fruit Belt neighborhood, and the Jefferson Avenue community, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center is pleased to announce a new outreach effort at the Tops Friendly Markets on Jefferson Avenue beginning in February.
On the first and last Thursday of each month, representatives from Roswell Park’s Community Outreach and Engagement team will set up tables inside the Tops vestibule, near the memorial waterwall, from 12-2 p.m., and provide information on a variety of health-related topics, from cancer screening and prevention to nutrition and ways people can provide their feedback on innovative research.
“We at Roswell Park will be collaborating with Tops on Jefferson Avenue in partnership to provide a continuation of the service we have provided in the past. From food donations to health services, Roswell Park remains committed to providing health information, screenings, and other needed services,” says Ellen Grant, PhD, LCSW-R, Executive Director of Corporate Social Responsibility at Roswell Park. “We are one community and we are looking forward to continuing to be part of our City of Good Neighbors.”
The events, offered twice a month, will be consistent, but the information presented will change based on community interest. “We will be responsive to the needs and interests of the community members we meet, and we will allow the specific focus to evolve based upon the requests and questions we hear,” says Nikia Clark, a Senior Community Outreach and Engagement Manager in the Department of Cancer Prevention and Control at Roswell Park. “I’m excited about the opportunity.
When we talk about effective communication and outreach that gets results, this is what we’re talking about. This neighborhood, and this Tops location, they’re addressing a need and they’re investing in it. The best way to do community outreach is to do it on a routine basis. That way we can learn from each other, and community members know they can count on us being there as a resource.”’
Tops’ partnership with Roswell Park is longstanding, so forging this additional outreach together was a natural collaboration. “After the tragedy of 5/14, we learned that the most important thing to do was to lead with our hearts and to listen,” said Kathy Sautter, Tops’ director of corporate communications and public relations. “In engaging the community in important conversations and services like those offered by Roswell, we continue to provide the community with programming essential to their continued health and well-being.” Health, nutrition, other information is also available.
Additionally, there will be a representative from Roswell Park’s Survivorship program, offering information on the support services available to those who have completed their treatment and are learning to live and thrive again. A member of our caregiver support group also will be ready to help people caring for a loved one going through treatment.
This is an important opportunity and a great way for Roswell Park to further its commitment to the community and neighborhood, Clark says. Coming less than a year after the horrific mass

shooting inside the store, this outreach activity is one of the ways that the Roswell Park team is working to better serve members of the community.
“After any tragedy, after the cameras go away, when it’s not in the forefront of the news anymore, people can forget. But in this neighborhood, for the people of this community, they live with it every single day,” Clark says. “We want them to know we’re committed, that we’re going to show up and we’re here for the long haul.”
Free Kidney Screening, Health Screening Fair This Weekend
A free Kidney Screening and Health Screening Fair will be held on Saturday, March 4 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at Gerard Place, 2515 Bailey Avenue.

Physicians, medical staff will be on-site conducting blood pressure, urinalysis, education awareness and scheduling cancer screenings. The Buffalo Urban League, Buffalo Hope will offer resource information for the community affected by the recent blizzard and more.
The event is being hosted by Majority Leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes, the Kidney Foundation of Western New York, Kidney Health Together and Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Wellness Fair, and Free Sports Physicals for Community
University at Buffalo health sciences students are hosting a free sports physicals and wellness fair for members of the community from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 4, at the Seneca-Babcock Community Center, 1168 Seneca St., Buffalo.
In addition, the UB students will be providing free sports physicals for K-12 students; a parent or guardian must accompany the child and bring their school’s physical form.
Dental, medicine, pharmacy and public health and health professions students and faculty will be staffing the event, providing free health information and screenings for community members of all ages.
Vaccinations will not be provided at this clinic.
The spiritual message of the Full Moon March 7 is "That whatever happens now is nonnegotiable," so be prepared to take a big leap of faith, and look toward your path forward with excitement and clarity.
The Virgo Full Moon comes at the beginning of an incredibly busy energetic month, giving us a dose of whatever medicine is needed. It carries a healing vibration, guiding us to seek out the elixir that will be most beneficial to us right now.
This is a time when self-care is paramount. The more we can show up for ourselves and take care of our own needs, the more we will move in harmony with this Full Moon. We may also feel the desire to clear away the clutter, tidy up our spaces, and make them a stronger reflection of the person we are becoming. Creating a safe space that fuels your creativity and productivity is a powerful way to use this Full Moon energy.
So let’s remember the gifts that this period brings and trust that this is a good time of reflection and revising your journey in life. In the grand flow of life, these inward moving energies are conducive for fine tuning and helping to bring greater clarity, awareness, and focus.
Spring is the Best Time to Clean Out Your Life — Start With:
•Cleansing Your Spirit.
•Clean out closets and drawers. Let go of what you no longer need. Clutter is a sign of negative energy and you want to remove any negative energies from your home.
•Clean off the clutter around your sleeping area. This is really important as when you sleep your subconscious mind is still active and you want it to have freedom to move in positive directions.
•Clean out old papers and receipts. Why hang onto a receipt from three years ago. Unless it’s for taxation purposes let it go. You can take your time and do this cleaning over the next few weeks. It will benefit you enormously on your spiritual path.

“No More Tears At Last” A Conversation With Founder Tina Sanders
The No More Tears at Last, Inc. organization will celebrate its 10th Annual Homicide Awards Event on March 11, at the Grapevine Banquet Facility, 333 Dick Road from 7 to 11p.m.. This year the Organization will be honoring Individuals and groups locally as well as throughout New York State, and across the United States, who have dealt with traumatic deaths.
Former Fire Commissioner of the Buffalo Fire Department and social justice advocate, Garnell Whitfield will deliver the keynote address.
The following Q and A is a conversation with Tina Sanders, the President/ Founder of No More Tears at Last, Inc. Organization.
Q: What makes No More Tears Stand Out?
A: We have the Passion for the people. We are willing to go above and beyond. All of our families, that we engage with, no matter the trauma or the circumstances, they always appreciate that we come through with what we say we're going to do, and the biggest part they appreciate, is the follow through, keeping up with them. We are there to serve.
Q: What is a normal day for No More Tears?
A: To be honest, no day is a “normal” day, or the same. A day with No More Tears could range from helping a youth that may be in a crisis situation or an entire family in need. And we don't just stop there. We stay around even after the issue has been resolved and we don't pass our youth over to anyone else, unless we know for sure they will take care of them. As far as our families that have experienced a homicide or any type of loss, we are there from the beginning, and even years later, if the family allows us. We assist with paperwork, prayer vigils, even clothing for family members, and immediate necessities if we can. We mentor and do grief counseling, we have even assisted with living arrangements, depending on the situation. We're not there to judge, we are there to serve. To provide as much assistance as possible. Each and every family is different.
Q: What do you look for when selecting individuals and groups to honor at the annual Awards Banquet?
A: When we look to honor families we have assisted or have been in touch with No More tears in some way. When we look at organizations we look at the longevity of the group, also the work they do along with the collaboration of different Organizations. I can say we have worked with countless families, but unfortunately we can't honor them all at once.
Q: Why are you honoring Individuals and groups from different States this year?
A: Although a person or group may not be local, these are individuals and groups we have worked with hand in hand. We have to say that No More Tears has been given the opportunity to travel and assist others in different areas, and they appreciate the support we offer.
Q: What are some of the immediate needs of No More Tears?
A: No More Tears does not have the resources to operate effectively. Some of the needs to operate would be funding, office materials, and an office and housing for our domestic violence victims. However our most urgent need is funding.
Q: What are some long term goals for No More Tears?
A: We would like to be able to have No More Tears organization in as many states as possible; to be able to assist the community with no hesitation and not be limited because of lack of funding; to build a legacy so that No More Tears is still around long after I'm gone.

INDIA WALTON: "MASTEN MATTERS" continued
Erie County Democratic Party.
“Zeneta is an honorable and classy woman. I’ve known her beyond this (politics) for many years. What I do know is what she says is true – we’re not running against one another. We’re both running for Masten and I am running against the establishment… again.
“I don’t believe there is going to be any negativity coming out of her mouth," she continued., " but I know that it’s going to surface from somewhere. Hopefully we’re going to talk about the issues because that’s what I am going to focus on…. what’s important to this community.”
Walton says she is not naive about Buffalo politics.
“…There are forces trying to stop me …but this is about our neighborhoods and our community…and now we’re coming back to get what rightfully belongs to us and they are afraid someone is going to be spearheading to make sure that happens. They don’t want me to be in any seat of power.”
She concluded: " I love my people unequivocally, hands down and whether I win the primary or Zeneta does or whomever is enters the race and wins the primary, my hope and wish and dream for Masten and for Buffalo is that we have somebody in leadership that is going to actually lead and govern with and listen to and seek out the needs and opinions of the people that live here.”
ZENETA EVERHART: "Masten Matters" continued
Zeneta’s support, Congress and President Biden enacted the first real substantive gun control legislation in decades.
Following the shooting at Tops, Zeneta and Zaire channeled their grief into action, forming Zeneta and Zaire’s Book Club and soliciting donations of books that promote diversity, inclusion, and understanding for distribution to children across Western New York.
“After the shooting at Tops, my mom saw what I needed, and was there for me on the worst day of both of our lives, and every single day since, just like she always has been,” said Zaire Goodman, Zeneta’s son. “She was there for me, and she saw what our community needed and was there for them too. We both grew up in Masten, and I know this is where her heart is. I can’t wait to see what she does to make our neighborhood and all of Masten a better place to call home.”
She recently received the unanimous endorsement from the Erie County Democratic Party. Democratic Party.
“I know as well as anyone the great challenges faced by Buffalo’s children and families, as well as the hope and possibilities that can be realized if we join together to meet those challenges. There is no one more committed to that fight than I am, and I truly thank my fellow Democrats for their endorsement. They have placed their trust in me, and they will not be disappointed.”
Everhart,41, earned her associate’s degree from Villa Maria College and her bachelor's from Canisius College. She is also a former photojournalist and producer.
When asked earlier this month by a news reporter about the upcoming Primary and the candidacy of India Walton, she replied: “We've always had a good relationship. The thing is I'm running for Masten. I'm not running against India. She is not running against me. ... This seat belongs to the people of the Masten District."
Say Yes Announces Three Key Promotions
Three longtime and distinguished colleagues of color have been promoted into key leadership positions inside the leading education and workforce development nonprofit. Buffalo, N.Y. – February 13, 2022 – Say Yes Buffalo announced today that three longtime employees of the agency will be promoted into key leadership roles.
The former Senior Director of Postsecondary Success and Communications, Daphne Ross, has become Chief Impact Officer, a newly created role which will oversee the agency’s development, strategic partnerships, data, and fundraising efforts for the scholarship endowment. This move will place Ms. Ross as the second-in-command at the nonprofit, which currently employs over 150 people. Ms. Ross has been with the agency since 2013 and most recently oversaw the creation of the CareerWise Greater Buffalo modern youth apprenticeship program. Before that, she steered the creation of the Buffalo College Success Network to improve persistence metrics with Say Yes scholars.
Stephanie Peete has become Director of Workforce Development, continuing the strong work she has performed in her role as Business Partnerships Manager. Stephanie has been with Say Yes Buffalo since 2014, serving as Family Support Specialist and Internship supervisor. Ms. Peete has for years worked to develop relationships with the business community in the effort to link skilled, young graduates of Buffalo public and charter schools with internships and workforce development opportunities to the current employer demand.
FEEDMORE! Spectrum recently donated $15,000 to FeedMore WNY in Buffalo to support the creation of 3,000 BackPack kits filled with nutritious food that will be distributed to local area students facing food insecurity. “I’d like to thank Charter/Spectrum for their contribution. As the inflation rate increases, money doesn’t stretch as far, so it’s great to know that Charter and FeedMore WNY are working hard to help take care of our most precious and at-risk youth. Food desserts and access to nutritious food continue to be a challenge for many residents in my Assembly District on Buffalo’s Eastside, so I’m happy to see these two organizations answer the call to combat hunger,” commented Assembly Majority Leader Crystal PeoplesStokes. After American Idol Audition Buffalo’s Matt Wilson on His Way to Hollywood!
Matt Wilson, of Buffalo, a day care teacher turned singer, wowed the judges on American Idol during week two of season 21 auditions this past Sunday.
When Wilson, a 21, a gradate of Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts, walked into the audition room, he immediately tugged at judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan’s heartstrings when he announced he works with young children at a day care center.
“That’s a special human being right there,” Bryan noted.
Wilson also shared that he put his music dreams on the back burner, but with the help of his wife Melisa, he decided to audition for Idol. “It’s been a long time since I’ve really dreamed. I didn’t think it would even be possible,” he said of why he lost his dream of music. “If it wasn’t for her, then I wouldn’t be in front of you guys.”
This sentiment led into his audition song, “For Tonight,” by Giveon.
Wilson’s smooth voice brought a smile to all the judges’ faces. The tune showed off his melodic range, and the judges rewarded him with a standing ovation.
“You have a purity and believability–I just love the fact that it’s genuine,” Richie praised. “You just had a conversation with us…I love your presentation. Sky’s the limit my friend.”
“I’m just so glad that your wife said, ‘give it one more shot, you’ve got something,'” Perry said, emphasizing the tone of Wilson’s voice.
“That was one of the most genuine, honest, real performances I’ve ever witnessed,” Bryan raved.
“This is like a dream come true,” Wilson professed, bringing his wife into the audition room at Perry’s request. Melisa revealed that the first time she heard Wilson sing was in middle school. “He blew my mind and he still does every day,” she said. “He has so much talent and I just want the world to see that.”
The judges agreed, with Richie first awarding Wilson with a “yes,”solidifying Wilson’s slot in the Hollywood round.

James Starks Inducted into the Niagara Falls High School Athletic Hall of Fame
On Thursday February 23 Former Green Bay Packers running back James Starks was officially inducted into the Niagara Falls High School (NFHS) Athletic Hall of Fame at the Board of Education Auditorium Niagara Falls City School District Administration Building February 23.
A 2005 graduate of NFHS, Starks played college football at the State University of New York at Buffalo. The Packers drafted him in the sixth round of the 2010 NFL Draft. Starks brought the Super Bowl back to WNY that year, finishing his rookie season with a Packers win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLV. Selected for the NFHS Athletic Hall of Fame in 2018, Starks was unable to attend that year’s ceremony, so his induction will be recreated tonight. The star athlete is also being recognized for his basketball and track success.
Two Coaches With Buffalo Bills Connections Honored With Johnnie L. Cochran Salute to Excellence Award
The Noon time reception theme for 2023 Fritz Pollard Alliance Foundation 18th Annual Johnnie L. Cochran, Jr. Salute To Excellence was "Black Resistance, Building Bridges, and Navigating Barriers." That’s exactly what Black people have to do while working for the NFL and many other professions in America. This event is always the highlight of my Super Bowl Week each year. It’s where distinguished Black folks and everyday people meet and honor our own bright shining lights.
Two of the Honorees are familiar names to Western New York sports fans. The Johnnie L. Cochran, Jr. Salute to Excellence Awardees were Perry Fewell, Senior Vice President, NFL Officiating Administration and Leslie Frazier, Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator, Buffalo Bills.
Perry Fewell was Buffalo Bills Defensive Coordinator under Head Coach Dick Jauron. When Jauron was fired with seven games left in the 2009 season, Bills Owner Ralph Wilson turned to Fewell to be the interim Head Coach. Fewell did not get the Head Coaching position the next season as the Bills opted to go with his Offensive Coordinator at the suggestion of Chan Gailey. That was a typical Ralph Wilson move not wanting to hire a Black Man as Head Coach of his football team. Fewell went on to win a Super Bowl as Defensive Coordinator of The New York Giants and his current responsibilities include overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Officiating Department, including outreach to the league’s Head Coaches and General Managers, and compliance with the collective Bargaining Agreement between the NFL and the NFL Referees Association. He also serves as a liaison to the NCAA on officiating related matters. Fewell said, “I’m very honored to receive this Award and thankful for being able to Coach for over 35 years with 22 years in the NFL.” When asked about Rochester native and first African American female Referee Maia Chaka, Fewell said,” She’s making excellent progress and you must understand it takes almost 4 to 5 years to truly understand all the rules and become comfortable with the speed of the game. She’s going to be a good official, it just takes time.”
Under Leslie Frazier’s watch the Bills consistently ranked among the league’s best defensive units including total defense, takeaways, passing defense, points per game allowed, and opposing passer rating. It’s amazing to me that Frazier’s consistent defenses does not get the real credit due him. Keep in mind Bills offense averaged 29 points per game but only could muster 10 points against the Cincinnati Bengals playoff game. If offense would have held up to their end of the bargain the Bills would have won the game 29-27. The point is this: stop blaming the defense for the loss, as the offensive unit is very much to blame as well. The Fritz Pollard Alliance Executive director Rod Graves said, “Although ownership doors remain open, in many cases, the results remained barren of inclusive successes.”
The Fritz Pollard Trophy College Football trophy went to the player who earned accolades for his Community Service, Deslin Alexandre a defensive end for the University of Pittsburgh. Alexandre earned his Bachelors degree in Communication and has enrolled in the University of Pittsburgh’s Katz Graduate School of Business.
The John B. Wooten Award went to the San Francisco 49ers for their diversity in the front office. The Paul J. Tagliabue Award was presented to the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). Taj McWilliams-Franklin, Player Relations & Development Manager, WNBA accepted the Award for the league. The WNBA continues to be on the forefront of diversity and inclusion by supporting their own and standing up for them when push comes to shove. I really enjoy the direction in which the WNBA is going and wish them continued success!
NATIONAL & WORLD NEWS Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot Loses Bid for Re-election
Mayor Lori Lightfoot of Chicago lost her bid for a second term on Tuesday, a resounding defeat that reflected widespread dissatisfaction from voters over her handling of crime and policing in the nation’s third-largest city.
Bola Ahmed Tinubu Declared Nigeria’s President as Opposition calls for New Polls
Bola Ahmed Tinubu was on Wednesday declared the winner of Nigeria’s controversial presidential elections, as opposition leaders decried the polls as rigged and called for a fresh vote.
Tinubu, 70, represents the ruling All Progressives Congress party, which received close to 8.8 million votes – about 36.6% of the total
He defeated vice president Atiku Abubakar of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and popular third force candidate Peter Obi, who has gained in popularity among young people in particular. Videos from the capital Abuja showed Tinubu’s supporters cheering and celebrating the win.
After decades spent behind the scenes, Tinubu will become Nigeria’s fifth elected president since 1999.
As Bola Tinubu emerged as the winner disillusionment dominated among the millions of young voters who had placed their hopes in Peter Obi, a surprise challenger who led in some polls throughout the campaign and managed to pull off an upset victory won 12 of Nigeria’s 36 states, including Lagos state, where Mr. Tinubu had served as governor.
Nigeria’s two major opposition parties had called for the presidential election to be canceled and rerun, saying it had been compromised by vote rigging and widespread violence. The election was marred by charges of voter suppression, long waits at polling stations, along with days of counting the votes which opposing candidates said were a sure sign of ruling party corruption and a “sham.” A reporter for NPR reporting from Nigeria said he witnessed gunman storm a polling place and steal the ballot box filled with votes. In other instances, voting was delayed or people didn’t get to vote at all, as election officials failed to show up.
An NBC News reported commented, “This election will be felt beyond Nigeria’s borders” because governance can be contagious – good elections can inspire neighbors – and bad elections can set a bad example for them to follow.
Nigeria, which has the largest population and economy in Africa, is nicknamed “the Giant of Africa.”
Four years ago, Ms. Lightfoot made history as the first Black woman to be elected mayor of Chicago when she swept all 50 of the city’s wards. Ms. Lightfoot, who is the first sitting mayor in Chicago since 1989 to lose reelection, said in a concession speech late Tuesday that she “will be rooting and praying for our next mayor to deliver for the people of this city for years to come.”

FAMILY OF MALCOLM X FILES $100 MILLION LAWSUIT
The family of Malcolm X formerly has announced plans to file a $100 million wrongful death lawsuit against the CIA, FBI, New York State and the NYPD for allegedly concealing evidence in connection to the assassination of the civil rights leader, reports CBS News.
At a press conference at The Malcolm X & Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center in New York City on February 21, attorneys Ben Crump and Ray Hamlin announced the lawsuit accompanied by two of Malcolm X’s daughters, marking the 58th anniversary of Malcom X's death.
“For years our family has fought for the truth to come to light concerning his murder, and we'd like our father to receive the justice that he deserves,” Ilyasah Shabazz said. “The truth about the circumstances leading to the death of our father is important—not only to his family but to many followers, many admirers … And it is our hope that litigation of this case will finally provide some unanswered questions. We want justice served for our father.”

Is It Going to Be Affordable Housing Or an Unaffordable House?
Iwas again contacted by Nate Boyd, along with Joe Mascia regarding plans for the BMHA’S recently announced $400,000,000 plans to tear down and redevelop The Marine Drive Apartments. It’s my understanding that the initial plans were to renovate the apartments, but the project to renovate was considered too long to complete and too costly. However whether rehabbing or totally rebuilding, there are some important questions that need to be asked. If they demolish the property, what will become of the over 1,000 residents? Will rents remain the same once the new buildings are built? Or is this one of the city's and developers scheme to move out the residents to build unaffordable housing? Right now the Marine Drive Apartments are considered low income housing, located in a beautiful section of the city, Canal side. So once the Marine Drive apartments are demolished would the current residents be able to move into the renovated or rebuilt complex or will the wealthy move in? What’s the real long term plans for the Marine Drive Apartments?
The tenants of the Marine Drive Apartments have been meeting with developers, and there is a Community Benefits Agreement (CBA) being worked on by an attorney. This CBA as it is called is to benefit the community and not the developers. It will allow the community have what it would like to have in it and not what the developers want. Which is a win for the community. Now meetings that have been held were private. Up coming meetings will be open to the community. I will post meeting times and locations. These public meetings will be very important and benefit every community greatly. What is a Community Benefit Agreement? It’s basically a contract between a developer and COMMUNITY BASED ORGANIZATIONS representing the RESIDENTS interests. The contract will stipulate the benefits of the community in return for supporting the developer. Some of the benefits of such agreements are guaranteed minimum local hiring and inclusion of affordable units and improving and developing parks and community facilities. These agreements can be very equitable for a community, it will enable residents to benefit from new activities and opportunities in neighborhoods threatened by GENTRIFICATION and displacement.
As I get information on the meetings being held in regards to the Marine Drive Apartments I will most surely do my best to get the time dates and location to you all in a timely manner. Let's get what we want in our communities and lets rebuild the east side. And speaking of East Side, in closing, I’d like to make a motion to the people that EAST SIDE remains our designated name/ reference of choice and that “East Buffalo” nonsense be dropped. What do you all think? It's always been the EAST SIDE and a tragedy like the one on May 14 can’t change that! I’m Just Saying…

Why It's Important That the Truth About Our History is Taught in School
BY SAMARIA HICKS
Something I have started to think about recently is how traumatic it is for Black people to have to sit through learning only the negative parts of their history in school for several years, and the lack of representation in the American history we are taught. The only historical figures in Black history that teachers have touched upon in school consists of Harriet Tubman, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Frederick Douglass, Rosa Parks, and maybe Booker T. Washington or W.E.B. DuBois if we get lucky. But overall, African American children have to teach themselves most of their history which is very unfortunate. Having to sit in school and be fed such negative information regarding the history of African Americans is extremely exhausting and takes a toll us. I feel like a lot of Black kids are desensitized to it because we have been experiencing this since elementary school. In school, history is my least favorite subject because of the way that it is taught. As a Black kid growing up in the American public school system, I can say that I am hurt by the fact that this is how it is and we just choose to deal with it.
African Americans had such a huge role in the creation of this country. The only thing that Black people in American history seem to be attached to is slavery. The fact that the main way students learn about Black history is through slavery is so shameful because Black people are way more than that. Slavery was extremely inhumane and no person ever deserved to have to experience that. The "good" effects that slavery had on American history were: holding up the economy of the South for so long, and also some of the nation's most monumental buildings were built by slaves (i.e. the White House). Black people are amazing, we have broken so many stereotypes that were established by the majority race in this country and shown that we are superior to the standards they categorized us under. I wish that people took more consideration into how we feel. I also don't understand how the curriculum can just be structured to only highlight the great things that White people have done in American history when African Americans have made such a huge contribution too. My people and ancestors have made such huge contributions to the creation of this country and it's not recognized enough unless Black people take the initiative to let it be known.
I wish that the importance of African American history in this country was taken more seriously because it is just as important as European American history. I hope that from my story, you can understand who I am a little better from this general idea along with my thoughts on it. I am a person who loves discussing topics that need awareness, or coming up with new ideas and talking about them as well. Overall, I hope that one day Black history in the United States will be valued just as much as White history because Black history influenced everyone's history.
Too Many Merchants In And Around Our City Do Not Respect Us – And that Has to Stop!
Dear Editor,
My wife Kenya, a hard working, law abiding citizen, recently experienced the most humiliating accusation you could label a person - being called a thief.
The incident took place at a nail supply store on Niagara Falls Blvd. After purchasing over $100 worth of supplies, she was accused of stealing a bottle of nail polish! The merchant claimed there was footage, yet nothing occurred beyond the accusation. Nonetheless, my wife was very upset, and understandably so! But here is my point. We have to realize as a people that, many merchants in and around the city DO NOT RESPECT US. I would ask of you to first of all, help me put the word out for our people TO NOT PATRONIZE those who do not respect us – specifically this nail supply store. .
Secondly, I would like to find out who OUR Black beauty suppliers in Buffalo are and support them instead. If you could provide a listing in a future article, that would be helpful. We cannot succeed as a community without FIRST circulating OUR money, with OUR people through OUR businesses. I appreciate your time and God Bless.
Respectfully,

Dear Editor:
As we wind down on Black History Month. We must do everything in our power to keep Black and Brown bodies at home. The next advocacy day for #Communities NotCages will be Virtually on March 6th. We encourage you to lend your voice to the movement as we look to reform a broken system. This is an opportunity to right the wrongs of generations past and the big bang of the prison system of the 1970's. While also doing away with the impacts of the 1994 crime bills. We can no longer wait on the sidelines as our communities are under attack.
