“White Privilege?”:

One can only imagine, had DA Doorley been a woman of color, what the result might have been. Backup called? Tackled to the ground? Handcuffed? Brutalized? Maybe even shot… Activists in Rochester, decrying a blatant example of “White privilege,” are calling for the resignation of Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley.

The protests come in the wake of the release of body cam footage from a traffic stop involving Doorley – who refused to pull over until she arrived at her home, and a body-cam showing her combative actions with a police officer in her garage.

“Our demand is that she resign effective immediately, removed from office and disbarred,” said Mike Johnson, an organizer with Save Rochester Inc.

“Had this been, an average citizen, they would have been met with a lot more force,” he added. The protest highlighted the need for accountability among public officials. The organization has started a petition asking for her to be removed from office; some calling for her to be disbarred.

The Take It Down Planning Committee activist group, also calling for her removal released the following statement in part:

“In our humble but unequivocally staunch and informed view, District Attorney Sandra Doorley should be removed from her position immediately… as an example should be made to confirm that none of us are above the law.

“We believe that many local …. Regional…and state leaders and and lawmakers are being mush-mouthed about this egregious situation, and are pushing extremely soft, evasive, unacceptable, so-called "investigatory" nonsense, or they are silent altogether. There Really is Nothing to Investigate!!! That is to say, a plethora of clear and indisputable evidence is contained in the … video.

“None of this should be acceptable to the Rochester, Monroe County, New York State communities, especially when considering the number of lives, particularly Black ones, that Ms. Doorley has had profoundly-negative impact over. Clearly she has violated public trust to the degree and extent that it cannot possibly be repaired or restored even before this incident.

“Clearly, Ms. Doorley has a reputation and history as one who supports individual, institutional, and structural racism, which is (in and of itself), a reason why she should never have held the position of Monroe County District Attorney in the first place. … However, it is clear that many are fully aware regarding backgrounds and histories of folks like Sandra Doorley. In fact, in many cases, she represents exactly what they want. Thus, this is NOT purely a matter of ignorance.

However, it is also clear that widespread apathy is part of the equation, which is one reason why this type of situation is so very important. That is, it presents an outstanding opportunity to drive home the point that chronic apathy can be very detrimental and even dangerous, which represents a bottom line in the Doorley Case. She IS dangerous, and must be removed (with all deliberate speed). If this widely-siloed community ever needed Full Unity --- it is Now!”

Former Public Defender And Civil Rights Attorney Scott Hechinger stated the following: “Cruel DA Sandra Doorley, who had long abused her power to influence elections, kill bail reform, mass jail Black & brown people, & prosecute innocent people, just committed a felony by fleeing a traffic stop, then berated an officer while pledging to dismiss her case. Disbar her.”

Bed Bug Infestation In Buffalo Public Housing

Senior residents say their apartments are overrun with bed bugs, roaches and rodents. The problems don't end there.

Bed bugs are out of control at the Buffalo’s Municipal Housing Authority’s Lyndon B. Johnson Apartments, according to tenants who say the infestation is just one of many problems at the 10-story building at Main Street and Humboldt Parkway.

“Everyone in this building has bed bugs,” said Erma Ecford, a tenant representative in the 206unit building who has lived at LBJ the past 10 years.

Many tenants are struggling financially because of the cost of replacing furniture and buying pest control products, she said. The median income of tenants in the LBJ Apartments is $16,531 according to a demographics report from BMHA.

“We have a lot of people who are throwing away their furniture and now we have to sleep on floors,” Ecford said. “We can’t afford to buy anything else.”

LBJ is the housing authority’s largest senior development. Seventy percent of tenants are elderly and many of them are disabled, making a bed bug infestation, among other problems, particularly troublesome.

“We have blind people in the building; they don’t know what they’re sitting on, they don’t know what they’re eating,” said Ecford. “They could be laying on bed bugs. They could be eating roaches.”

Another tenant, Tina Moore, who spends most of her time in a wheelchair, said she didn’t know her apartment had bed bugs until she had to be relocated to another unit within the building. Movers discovered the insects crawling out of her mattress and boxes of her belongings.

“I don’t want to get ate up,” she said.

BMHA Executive Director Gillian Brown said that he’s aware of, and sympathetic to, the bed bug issue and that BMHA is doing its best to eliminate bed bugs and other pests and rodents across its complexes.

“We have spent hundreds, and hundreds, and hundreds of thousands of dollars at LBJ alone doing extermination inspections, actual exterminations,” he said.

“Bed bugs, as everybody knows, is a nearly intractable problem. Once you get them in a building, it is extremely difficult to get rid of them,” he said.

Brown said the authority is asking residents to help address the problem by eliminating clutter and complying with exterminators’ instructions when bed bugs are found, but he also recognizes many tenants at LBJ are having a particularly difficult time.

“We have a very fragile population at LBJ. We have a lot of frail elderly and it is very difficult, and we are working through it,” he said.

The building is 85 percent occupied, with a current hold on leasing while kitchen and bathroom renovations are underway Brown said. Nearly 80 percent of tenants are classified as “extremely low income,” with over three-quarters claiming government assistance as their main source of income. Seventy percent of tenants are Black and 17 percent are of Hispanic/Latino ethnicity.

Cases Across Complexes

This isn’t the first time bed bugs have become a problem at LBJ Apartments, tenants said. Ecford relocated from Missouri and moved into the building about 10 years ago to take care of her father, who was also a tenant at the LBJ Apartments. She said she immediately encountered the pests.

“I took care of my dad there, and I found out that we had to throw his whole bed out because of the bed bugs,” she said, adding: “I just recently had to throw my brand new mattress out for bed bugs.”

Infestations at the LBJ Apartments are not limited to bed bugs.

Major Taylor: The First Black World Champion Cyclist

More than 100 years ago, one of the most popular spectator sports in the world was bicycle racing and one of the most famous racers was an American man named Marshall Walter “Major” Taylor.

Born in November 1878 in the rural outskirts of Indianapolis, Indiana, he was the first Black world champion in cycling and the second Black athlete to win a world championship in any sport. He overcame racial barriers in an overwhelmingly White field bent on stopping him.

Major Taylor was given a bicycle at the age of 12. His first job was in a bike shop in Indianapolis where he performed bike tricks to entertain customers while dressed in a military uniform. This uniform is the source of the nickname “Major,” which stuck with

In 1929, Taylor self-published his autobiography, The Fastest Bicycle Rider in the World. He died penniless in 1932.

2024 Marks 50 Years of the Afro-American Historical Association of the Niagara Frontier!

Fifty years ago, five young scholars and community leaders came together to establish an organization focused on the collection, preservation, and dissemination of Buffalo and Western New York's African-American history. Dr. Monroe Fordham, Dr. Shirley Harrington, Mr. Frank Mesiah, Mr. Melvin Watkins and Dr. Lillian S. Williams' vision resulted in The Afro-American Historical Association of the Niagara Frontier, Inc. The Association's primary mission "to preserve historical sources that pertain to AfroAmericans in Western New York and to promote research and scholarship that has to do with the life and history of Afro- Americans in New York State" is as relevant today as it was in 1974.

Over half a century, the Association through its Board of Directors and members has developed a legacy as an organization that has steadfastly worked to fulfill its mission. Yet, just as we often take people, whom we rely on for being trustworthy, efficient, and competent, for granted, we have a tendency to overlook an organization like the AAHANF that has a reliable record and a long list of significant contributions to our community.

In its 50-year history, AAHANF has saved and preserved the records of countless individuals and organizations that are no longer active and would have been irretrievably lost. These records are available in microfilm to researchers and students, at no charge. Since 1977, we've published Afro Americans in New York Life and History, a scholarly journal. The journal is cataloged in libraries throughout the country and is subscribed to by a national and international readership. We also produce a local newsletter, "Historically Speaking" that continues to raise awareness about the importance of our local historic gems.

A major component of the preservation of regional history requires that you engage the community in the preservation process. The Association offers a number of programs that encourage community historians. The Annual Carter G. Woodson Essay Contest provides elementary and high school students an opportunity to research and write on a history topic; the Annual Family History Dinner features a local family historian, who speaks on their research experiences and outcomes. We also participate annually at Juneteenth as a contributing member of the Heritage exhibit. Through the William Wells Brown Award, the Association honors individuals and/or organizations that have contributed to the promotion of historical scholarship and/or the preservation of regional African-American history.

The Association continues to utilize innovative mechanisms for teaching and sharing our history. One such innovation is the Ancestral Tour. In partnership with the Forest Lawn Cemetery, members of the Association's Board of Directors developed a lecture and acted as guides as they took participants on a tour of the final resting places of numerous pioneering Black Buffalonians. A few years ago, under our previous president, the late Dr. Felix Armfield, we initiated an annual program that commemorates the birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Partnerships are critical to the sustainability of any organization, especially in our current environment amid the attacks on Black History. We have formed partnerships with numerous educational, cultural, faith-based, and community groups. We are especially excited about our partnership with the Buffalo Genealogical Society of the African

Diaspora, which has resulted in a comprehensive funeral programs' archive that has recently been digitized.

Our most significant partners, however, are our members, who have sustained and supported the work of the Association for these 50 years. We request your continued support and urge you to share our history with others and ask them to join us as we begin the next 50 years!

On Saturday, May 4th, the Association will observe the 50th year of our existence at a Gala Luncheon at the Acqua Restaurant, 2192 Niagara Street in Buffalo. Mr. Douglass Ruffin, Jr., founder of the Buffalo History Channel will be our keynote speaker.

Buffalo Bills Were Drafting on Strict Budget

Buffalo Bills General Manager Brandon Beane had a strict budget due to salary cap woes entering into the 2024 NFL season. They had no intention of selecting a player in the first round due to a lack of money to spend on the entire draft class and bring in undrafted free agent signings. The cash-strapped Bills first selection in the second round of wide receiver Keon Coleman out of Florida State will help the passing game giving Josh Allen another target. The hard-hitting safety Cole Bishop from Utah State will be our starting safety of the future once he learns this safety driven Bills defense system.

The Bills will start Mike Edwards and Tyler Rapp at the safety’s positions. Buffalo’s next pick was Duke defensive tackle Dwayne Carter, a massive man with speed that can give Ed Oliver a breather throughout the season.

The Bills selected Kentucky running back Ray Davis in the fourth round and a low to the ground back will add speed and depth to the unit. The Bills then selected Georgia Bulldog Center/Guard Sedrick Van Pran-Granger, my favorite pick of this Bills 2024 draft because a much younger Center has been needed for several years. It’s about time Bills GM Brandon Beane has finally addressed the position.

The Bills also selected linebacker Edefuan Ulofoshio out of University Washington Huskies out west is an eager kid still learning the game and probably a practice squad player to begin his career. Javon Solomon from a small school Troy in Georgia seems to be hungry and could make a run for one of the edge rusher positions behind Von Miller, and AJ Epenesa. Solomon will most likely make the special team unit. In the sixth round Tackle from UCF Tylan Gable, and Corner Back Daequan Hardy from Penn state were selected. Gable can add depth to the offensive line unit and Hardy could be our Christian Benford from last year getting a chance to play against multiple receiver sets.

The Bills final pick was Travis Clayton, an international player who would add depth to an experienced offense line that did not suffer any season ending injuries during the 2023 NFL season. The Bills will sign a veteran wide receiver before and probably after training camp depending on how well the rookie class progresses with the game plan.

I also see the Bills packaging together next year draft picks and work a trade deal for San Francisco 49ers wide receivers Brandon Aiyuk or often injury prone Deebo Samuel. I would prefer Aiyuk but keep in mind Bills salary cap woes would mean more creative writing of contracts in order to give Aiyuk a new deal that he wants as part of a trade out of San Francisco.

This is going to be a very interesting season because Beane and McDermott hate to start younger players but are forced to and look forward to the ones that gain their trust and meet their goals. I think rookies Keon Coleman, Jayvon Solomon, Cole Bishop, and Sedrick Van Pran-Granger will be key contributors to the team this upcoming season. It’s going to be a time will tell situation and I look forward to training camp at St. John Fisher College in the summer. Please continue to be a good sport of all sorts!

NBA Playoffs Summary!

In the Eastern Conference the #1 seeded Celtics are up 2-1 over the Butler-Less Miami Heat. I don’t know about you but the services of a good Butler can be hard to replace. #2 seed New York made themselves at home in Philadelphia. They beat the 76ers on their home court surrounded by a slew of Knicks’ fans on Sunday, April 28 to go up 3-1. #3 seed Milwaukee hasn’t seen much of Giannis or “Dame time” lately. Both Lillard and Antetokounmpo were in street close Sunday as All- Star guard Tyrese Haliburton helped the #6 seeded Pacers go up 3-1 on the Bucks. Also, in the East the #4 seed Cleveland Cavaliers have “witnessed” the magic of the youth from #5 seed Orlando. The Magic tied that series up 2-2 on Saturday, April 27.

Meanwhile, the showdowns in the Western Conference were far from at high noon. But the duels have been contentious. #1 seed OKC Thunder are leading the #8 seed Pelicans 3-0. The Thunder are led by MVP candidate Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The Pelicans are without the aid of “Mount” Zion(Zion Williamson is injured). #2 seed Denver Nuggets a.k.a.

The Reigning World Champions have seen themselves down by double digits in three of four games. Denver was able to comeback in the second half of each game on King James and the Lakers. But Los Angeles was able to stave off elimination on Saturday, April 27th with another historic performance by LeBron “39 is the new 29” James. #3 seed Minnesota Timberwolves won their series 4-0 over #6 Phoenix Suns Sunday, April 28. Setting the Sun on Phoenix’s season with a trio of “Nuclear Scoring Weapons”. Lastly, #4 Los Angeles Clippers facing off against #5 Dallas Mavericks with a cast of stars has all the makings of a Hollywood ending. That soap opera is knotted up at two a piece.

East Side Bike Club Kicks off 2024 Season!

“EIGHT years ago there were no organized bike clubs based in Buffalo’s East Side,” said George Johnson, founder of the East Side Bike Club. “Learning and sharing together, as well as finding ways of including folks, is how we’ve grown East Side Bike Club to what it is today.”

The club, which was founded in 2016, will kick off its 2024 season of weekly Saturday morning10-mile leisurely-paced rides around the city next Saturday, May 11. Bikers will gather at 9:30 a.m. at Monument Plaza in MLK Jr. Park. The ride begins promptly at 10 a.m. and meets at the same time and place every Saturday.

“We’re also asking everyone in the biking community to join us on Saturday May 18 for our Solidarity ride in recognition of the 5/14 Massacre, “ said Johnson. “In addition, we’re planning a number of other special excursions this season, including upcoming Black History Rides highlighting the Underground Railroad, a planned Freedom Ride, and others.”

As part of the Clean Mobility Initiative, the East Side Bike Club will soon announce the grand opening of the E Bike Library, designed to provide E Bikes to residents of the East Side.

The East Side Bike Club, which focuses on promoting cycling on the East Side of Buffalo, has been instrumental in encouraging more people of color to adopt biking as a viable means of transportation. This endeavor challenges the notion that biking is exclusively for certain demographics and seeks to create a more inclusive and diverse cycling community.

“We have fun and a lot of great exercise,” said Johnson. “It’s important, especially right now, to get people riding together and coming together.”

George noted that bikes have a unique ability to bring people together that other activities do not possess. Biking also gives people a “Buffalo Strong” sense of community he added. They’re also great for health.

For more information about the East Side Bike Club, please visit their Facebook page. Better yet, join them on Saturday for a nice bicycle ride with new friends!

Mayor Brown's Financial Crisis: Make Developers Pay

Mayor Byron Brown presented his city budget recommendations for the upcoming 2024-2025 budget year this week. In the past that has coincided with his annual State of the City address, which provides the mayor with the opportunity to tout the accomplishments of the past year and unveil his priorities for the coming year.

Over the course of the state budget season, Mayor Brown has made headlines advocating for increased state aid to Buffalo. The new state budget increases Aid and Incentives to Municipalities (AIM) by $50 million for the first time to help local governments combat rising costs. Buffalo’s allocation will be $5 million. Brown’s response to the announcement was “grave concern” instead of relief.

That’s because over the years, the City of Buffalo’s budget has been balanced with unrealistic revenue projections, borrowing from the Buffalo Public Schools, and spending down the City’s reserves.

Due in large part to an unprecedented amount of American Rescue Plan (ARP) dollars from the federal government, $331 million to be exact, the City of Buffalo has been able to fill budget gaps inconspicuously. Not unprecedented nationally but highly relevant for what’s ahead, Buffalo has spent about 50% of its ARP funding in this way. Those funds run out at the end of the year, and that means that the bills will begin to stack up and the revenue generation - namely raising property taxes - that Brown so harshly criticized his former political opponent India Walton for - will become hypercritical in any attempt to balance the City’s budget.

So, what now? Per the City Charter, the budget must be adopted by May 22nd. From now until then, you’ll hear plenty about how there was no alternative. While the Brown administration will attempt to scapegoat the state and provide a narrative that justifies the sudden and substantial increase, the City of Buffalo - led by Byron Brown - have made policy decisions that have manufactured this crisis. Despite repeated calls over the years for repealing, opting out of, or reforming the 485-a property tax exemption, a November 2019 report from the Public Accountability Initiative estimated that the cost of the 485-a exemption was at least $66.9 million through 2030. And yet, there has been no attempt by any elected official to fix the broken system that would make developers pay their fair share and unburden poor and working-people with an additional tax liability this year and in the years to come.

In short: the City of Buffalo could actually have a surplus and instead is struggling to remain financially solvent and provide basic City services to residents.

The month of May will be filled with updates on the 2024-2025 City budget in an attempt to educate the public and bring greater accountability and transparency to the process. The only public hearing on this year’s budget will be held on Wednesday, May 15th at 5pm in Council Chambers. We’ll also respond to this year’s State of the City with resident voices about what’s really going on in Buffalo from their perspective and release a special two-part episode of F/ACT UP through Power 96.5/WUFO 1080AM dedicated to the issues that matter most to you. Family Of Dexter Reed, Killed After Chicago Police Fired 96 Shots Files Wrongful Death Suit

Family Of Dexter Reed, Killed After Chicago Police Fired 96 Shots During Traffic Stop, Files Wrongful Death Suit

The family of a Chicago man killed when four plainclothes police officers fired their guns nearly 100 times

during a traffic stop reportedly over a seatbelt violation, have filed a wrongful death lawsuit , accusing the department of “brutally violent” policing tactics.

The 81-page federal complaint alleges the officers violated multiple laws and police

department policies during the “predatory, violent, unlawful traffic stop” on March 21 that left 26-year-old Dexter Reed dead An Autopsy revealed that Reed was shot at least 13 times.

One officer in particular, reportedly fired at least 50 times, including three shots while Mr. Reed lay motionless on the ground. The 41 seconds of shooting, gave three of the four officers time to reload.

Police claim Reed shot first, and four different officers returned fire approximately 96 times , including after he exited his vehicle without a gun ”

Andrew M. Stroth, a lawyer for the Reed family, said the family was asking the Chicago police to disband tactical units that he said have been “terrorizing” residents. He said he was also asking for criminal indictments against some of the officers.

Do New York’s People of African Descent Deserve Reparations?

An On-Going Series By Soldier For Buffalo

Crimes Against Humanity

United States political leadership, as well as the leadership of most countries around the world have failed to respond with outrage or to demonstrate firm action to end these atrocities. Sadly, the stark results of these refusals to act fan the flames of the institutions of racism hence a polarized nation. There has been practically deadly silence from governments around the world on this crime against humanity as indeed the four hundred years of pernicious history must be treated. The vast role of enslavement can only be coined as crimes against humanity.

From 1882 to 1968, 4,743 lynchings occurred in the U.S., according to records maintained by NAACP. The highest number of lynchings during that time period occurred in Mississippi, with 581 recorded. Georgia was second with 531, and Texas was third with 493.

Unbelievably, the United States ranks countries around the world each year on the levels of action taken by them to prevent and end such crimes as current day human trafficking while seemingly refusing to admit their sins of the past. Sins that include the institution of slavery, Jim/Jane Crow, KKK Terrorism, Lynchings and Mass Incarceration among others against People of African Descent. On this issue the expected moral outrage by the United States is absent. We applaud the Governor of New York for doing the right thing even as the White House whose moral leadership has been questioned constantly remains mostly quiet. Unfortunately, there is also no outrage from the U.S. Congress nor from members of the Congressional Black Caucus. We can boast of the largest special interest caucus and even so, there is not one Black female in the US Senate. One can only hope that the Commission will agree that Reparations are due to People of African Descent in New York.

Massa Still Welcome…

What Was Good For Rochester, Syracuse, Niagara Falls Deemed Not For Buffalo...

Most times, fate allows one no opportunity to correct misdeeds or mistakes. Once a deed or action is done, it usually cannot be corrected, changed or revisited. However, sometimes, because of advocacy, faith, courage or even luck, a bad decision or mistake can be reversed.

Over 70 years ago, Buffalo politicians put forth what they self-proclaimed called progress, in what they labeled as urban renewal, to divide thriving, cohesive and connected neighborhoods around Humboldt Parkway by putting an Expressway in the middle of it. Tall, magnificent trees were cut, over 600 homes were taken through Eminent Domain and White Flight put the icing on that process that led to Buffalo's urban and Black neighborhoods' decline. This happened not just in Buffalo but in Black and poor urban neighborhoods all across the United States.

So, in Buffalo and other cities, community groups emerged to fight for the restoration of parks, parkways and lake side properties by campaigning for the removal or remediation of those expressways that were known to be impairing the health of residents and homeowners living near them. Fortunately, for cities in New York State such as Rochester, Syracuse and Niagara Falls, they were blessed with enlightened politicians that worked together with NYS Governor Kathy Hochul to remove the expressways from their collective cities. The governor who worked with those politicians in the three cities I just named, is the same governor who is denying the residents of Buffalo and Humboldt Parkway to live in a healthy environment by not removing the 33 Expressway and doubling down by insisting on putting a tunnel under Humboldt Parkway that will make people sicker than they are now.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death.”

-DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING

Morehouse College Says It Will Not Rescind Biden’s Invitation to Speak at Commencement

When word spread that President Joe Biden would serve as Morehouse College’s 2024 commencement speaker, a loud contingent of students and alumni demanded that the Atlanta-based Black college rescind the invitation. They argued that Biden was on the wrong side of the Israel-Hamas war and that he was using Morehouse as a prop to increase his sagging poll numbers among Black male voters.

However Morehouse College says it will not rescind Biden’s invitation despite criticism. Controversy began to bubble up in the Morehouse community in recent days, amid a broader period of protests on U.S. college campuses. More than 1,000 people have been arrested at student-organized protests of Israel’s war effort in Gaza on campuses across the country.

In the nearly seven months since the war began, Israel has killed more than 34,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, mostly women and children, according to the local health ministry. U.S. student protesters frequently note there are no universities left in Gaza — earlier this month, the United Nations decried the “systematic destruction” of the Palestinian education system in Gaza, reporting 5,800 students and teachers had been killed. Over 80% of schools in Gaza were damaged or destroyed, U.N. experts said.

“They have killed in the last six and a half months, 33,000 Palestinians, wounded 77,000 — two-thirds of whom are women and children. They have destroyed over 60% of the housing. They have destroyed that health care system. They have destroyed the infrastructure, no electricity, very little water. And right now, we are looking at the possibility of mass starvation and famine in Gaza,” Sen. Bernie Sanders, said recently on CNN’s “State of the Union” when asked about claims of anti-Semitism at the campus protests. “When you make those charges, that is not anti-Semitic. That is a reality.”

Dr. Martin Luther King was a graduate of the 157-year-old historically Black college. King, a 1964 Nobel Peace Prize winner for his civil rights advocacy, said the award was “a commission” that compelled him to oppose the Vietnam War in particular and “militarism” generally. One Morehouse alumni who supports rescinding Biden's invitation to speak, wrote that the college should "reconsider its attachment to Dr. King if "they cannot affirm this noble tradition of justice."

Another stroke of luck for Buffalo and other urban cities was the election of a President of The United States, Mr. Joseph Biden, who believed in reconnecting communities in areas decimated by racist decisions to situate expressways in Black neighborhoods all across this country, in the 1950s and 1960s. Those of us who never thought luck, fate and/ or common sense would put Buffalo in the position to rid itself of the intrusive and divisive 33 Expressway, are elated and we are fighting hard to make sure that Buffalo takes advantage of correcting the mistake that was made so many decades ago. The decision to put the expressway on Humboldt Parkway was wrong in 1963 and it would be wrong to allow it to remain now, to continue to make people sick or to hasten their demise.

We can restore Humboldt Parkway by filling it in for 1/2 of the 1 billion dollars or more, cost of putting in a tunnel on 1/4 of the length of the Parkway. We need to be mindful of the fact that 3/4 of the Expressway on the Parkway will not be covered and will remain as it is right now. Let us work to have the Expressway removed to save the lives of those residents who bought their homes in the 1960s without the knowledge that they would soon be living next to a carbon monoxide emitting, cancer causing, anti- community monstrosity called the Route 33, Kensington Expressway.

Tune In To "We Are Women Warriors" with host Betty Jean Grant and Sherry Sherrill on WUFO Radio, 96.5 FM every Thursday from 11:30-12 noon. The show's call in number 716-837-1112.

THE SOVEREIGN CITIZEN

Dear Editor:

Our federal government has instructed our federal, state and local police agencies that everyone who purports to be a SOVEREIGN should be TREATED as a TERRORIST! They have also brainwashed the American public into believing that being a SOVEREIGN is anti-American and unpatriotic! Perhaps this is: "The POT calling the KETTLE black?"

WHAT IS SOVEREIGNTY? It is the inherent right and prerogative of a civilized people to rule itself, and to dictate all of the forms and conditions of the institutions it sets up to carry out this rule. Ironically, the U.S. SUPREME COURT agrees with those people who claim to be SOVEREIGN citizens of the American Republic!

Bond vs. UNITED STATES, 529 US 334 - 2000, The Supreme Court held that the American People are in fact Sovereign and not the States or the Government. The court went on to define that local, state and federal law enforcement officers were committing unlawful actions against the Sovereign People by the enforcement of the laws and are personally liable for their actions.

God Father Promotions Dane R. Smith Reflects On Upcoming Pre-Mothers Day Musical Extravaganza

Dane

R. Smith is super excited about the upcoming Pre-Mother’s Day Musical Extravaganza May 11.

“I feel that you have to believe in what you promote,” said the CEO and founder of Godfather Promotions . “And this show will be spectacular!"

Gracing the stage will be top notch local talent featuring Allen Carrier, Dee Paris, Charisse Freeman, Rodger Sapp and Bobby Bonner and the Untouchables.

Not only is the extraordinary talent home-grown , the venue – The McCoy Convention Center at 653 Clinton Street – is in the heart of the community as well.

It’s all a reflection of Buffalo born and raised promoter Smith’s connection to the East Side.

Dane is coming out of semi-retirement with the upcoming show and is looking to produce many more in the future. The last concert he produced was the Stylistics six years ago.

“Now that I’m back in the game, we’ll be doing more shows at the McCoy as well as other venues around the city,” he noted.

-Quarter of a Century In the Business-

“At one time everybody was going to Rochester for entertainment– because promoters Al Haymon and Freddy C left here and went to Atlanta,” recalled Dane . ’So there was a need.”

God Father was created to fill that void.

“For first year Jimmy Coble and I were partners. Our first concert was Blue Magic at the Tralf. We did four shows that year….after the fourth show we split and Jimmy went to Vegas.

"At that point I went solo. That was 25 years and 10 months ago.”

-Old School for Life-

Dane said his focus has always been old school. And to this day he credits the Dells - the legendary R&B singing group - for giving him the motivation he needed to keep going forward when he first got started.

“Although I didn’t have the money to book them, they were every encouraging,” he recalled. “They told me, ‘young blood, don’t be discouraged…you got your foot in the door, so go out there and do it!"

Dane said over the years he’s been blessed with support from the community and expressed sincere thanks and gratitude to everyone who showed him favor.

The May 11th Pre-Mother’s Day Musical Extravaganza affirms that support.

“This will probably be a sell out,” he said enthusiastically. “Tickets are selling very well but we still have a few tables left.”

The show starts at 7:30 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.) Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 the day of the show and includes dinner. There will also be a cash bar and 50/50 raffle.

“By me being a tenant rep, I get to see firsthand everybody’s apartment, and it is disgusting the way we are living,” Ecford said. “We have roaches walking down the hallway. They try to beat you in before you even get into your own apartment.”

Added Jeannine Threet, a tenant at LBJ for about four months:

“This is ridiculous; all of these roaches coming down from the ceiling and then fall-

ing on me. I can’t stand it, you know?”

There’s also a rodent problem, residents said. At the time of Investigative Post’s visit, there were mice droppings in an armchair within the apartment building’s community room, which Ecford said had been there for about a week. There was also a rat trap at the building’s exterior.

The problems aren’t limited to the LBJ Apartments, however.

OGS Design & Construction Group

A tenant from Slater Courts confronted BMHA commissioners at a board meeting recently about bed bugs in his Seneca Street apartment. Martin Mlodozeniec said he has been living with the bugs for over a year, even after trying to solve the problem himself.

frequently break down even though they were replaced in 2019 to the tune of $2 million.

“I have mental scars, I have physical scars and I have financial scars,” Mlodozniec said.

The housing authority recently announced a new “proactive strategy” to eradicate bed bugs and other pests by conducting a “BMHA-wide inspection of all apartments.”

The authority said it has partnered with Erlich Pest Control to identify and eliminate bugs and pests.

“This authority in the last two years has done more to combat roaches, bed bugs, rats and mice than had been done by this authority for probably 15 years previous,” Brown said. “We have some $600,000 allocated just towards pest removal over the course of this year and next.” Other Poblems

In addition to infestations, LBJ tenants say they have concerns with bad plumbing, faulty facilities and a lack of security.

“Upstairs floods all the time,” said Ron Washington, a tenant since 2003. “It leaks down into the light fixture in my bathroom. When I turn my faucet on in my tub, the water runs on the floor from behind the wall where the faucet and the knobs are. My toilet only flushes every now and then.”

Residents are also concerned about intruders. Ecford says homeless people have unscrewed lightbulbs and cut wires to alarm systems to sleep in stairwells and on the rooftop. Trespassers throw parties on the rooftop, do illicit drugs and defecate in the stairwells, residents said.

About three weeks ago, an intruder broke into the community room, destroyed recently installed arcade machines and stole security cameras off of the walls, residents said.

“I don’t think it’s fair to us elderly people in our golden years to have to live this way – unsafe and in deplorable conditions.” Ecford said.

Tenants also report leaky ceilings, and defective washers and dryers in the community laundry room. Elevators

“It’s not good for those elevators to break down like that when you have people in wheelchairs, walkers, some people can’t get up or down the stairwell,” said Donna Colbert, a resident substitute maintenance worker and resident of the LBJ Apartments since 2010.

“It’s like we’re the last house on the block. There’s nothing being done at all,” Colbert said.

That isn’t the case, according to Brown.

“LBJ is a building that is very important to the housing authority,” he said. “It’s not some forgotten little island that gets no attention. I assume there are tenant councils in the city who will say LBJ has gotten far more attention than any other developments that we have in terms of the amount of work we’ve done there and the amount of attention we’ve paid to the physical conditions.”

That work, Brown said, includes re-paving the parking lot and renovating kitchens and bathrooms.

Brown said he wasn’t aware of some of the problems tenants raised with Investigative Post.

“I haven’t gotten those calls,” he said.

“We’ve had eyes on most of the units in that place in the not-distant past so if there is a persistent problem or if someone has a work order for something that they feel is not getting attention, they should contact me; they should contact their manager,” he said.

Tenants say that hasn’t worked.

Ecford said many tenants are fearful of retaliation if they speak up, but she and others felt they have been left with no other choice.

“I told them as long as their rent is paid, we shouldn’t have a problem, but if I have some repercussions behind this, oh well, but I’m not going to keep living like this,” she said.
