CHAMPION ACADEMY RECEIVES $1 MILLION GIFT Largest Donation in Initiative’s History Kicks off Fundraising Campaign Rochester, NY– The Champion Academy Extreme Mentoring & Empowerment Initiative (Champion Academy), led by NFL Super Bowl Champion and Rochester native, Roland Williams, kicked off its first-ever fundraising campaign this week titled, Champions for Change, seeking to raise $5.2 million to ensure the program’s groundbreaking success continues to help teens in poverty long-term. To kick off the campaign, the Champion Academy was given a $1 million lead gift from the William & Mildred Levine Foundation to help underwrite program elements including student transportation, program technology, extra-curricular activities, student apparel, staff and food expenses.
Steppin’ Up to Solutions is a day-long event during which youth will go through various workshops, dialogue on the state of the community and learn about what they can do to bring about positive change. This year’s theme was suicide awareness. The conference started with service learning project presentations by R-Center Youth Councils which were judged by community partners. The youth council competed for $300 to $500 to go toward their project. These projects will increase inclusiveness and benefit the community in various areas.

SUPPORT OUR
“This transformative gift from the William & Mildred Levine Foundation is providing the Champion Academy with the critical support we need to grow into a sustainable part of the region. We are extremely grateful for the opportunity to continue our much-needed work with hundreds of teens in poverty," said Roland Williams, President & CEO. Additionally, the first William & Mildred Levine Foundation Senior Scholarship was awarded to one Champion Academy senior who best exemplified leadership, citizenship and outstanding academic achievement. Raven Jess, a senior at Integrated Arts and Technology High School, was this year's recipient and will receive a $1,000 scholarship to underwrite college expenses. "We want to work with The Champion Academy because there are so many parallels between the challenges these children are facing and what my grandfather experienced growing up on Joseph Avenue," said Todd Levine, President of the William & Mildred Levine Foundation. "Lack of opportunity and hardship could have kept my grandfather from achieving greatness, but he was fortunate to have role models that helped him realize his potential and find his path to success. We hope this gift provides a launching pad that will transform The Champion Academy and empower Roland and his team, so all of Rochester's challenged youth can find their path and realize their greatest potential." Champion Academy is inviting members of the Rochester community and beyond to participate in this fundraising effort to help more than 300 teens in poverty to become successful contributing members of the community. To make a donation to this campaign or to get involved as a volunteer, please call 585.571.7057, email Donate@ChampionAcademyRoc.org, or visit www.championacademyroc.org.

TRAGEDY ON FILLMORE REVISITED
Family Seeks Justice For Ida Murphy As City Moves to Have Case That Resulted in the Death of Two Innocent, Unarmed Black People, Dismissed
I
t’s been five years, and there is still no justice in the tragic accident that claimed two lives on Fillmore Avenue on Dec. 6, 2012 – a tragedy that didn’t have to happen . On that fateful evening, then 48-year old Issac Parker was pulled over by Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority police for what authorities described as a “routine Stop” for a minor traffic violation” for having his high beams on. What followed was a classic “diving while Black” textbook scenario. At some point, according to court documents obtained by The Challenger, Parker, a former Marine, “responded appropriately,” turning off his high beams as well as his car and providing a NYS identification card. The officer who was questioning him claimed he could smell alcohol . Parker denied having anything to drink. He was asked to step out of the vehicle. Then everything went south. A struggle ensued as the questioning officer tried to physically remove him. Parker was shot by the questioning officer’s partner, but managed to drive away. (The officer who fired the shot in a deposition testified that he did not detect any odor of alcohol on Parker and could not tell if the driver was slurring his words or not). A high speed chase ensued. Parker lost control of his car, crashing into several polls including a traffic light. One of the polls crashed down on Ida Murphy near Pike’s Peak Market at 1318 Fillmore across from Antioch Baptist Church, where she was a devoted member. The gunshot proved fatal for Parker. Both she and Parker died at the scene. The family of Ida Murphy filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the City of Buffalo. But the city most recently filed a motion for summery judge-

Glownia at 9:30 a.m. in Erie County Court. “It’s been a nightmare,” said Carpacio Murphy, the son of the late Ida Murphy. “You can’t start the grieving process till justice is done…right now there is no justice…no closure.” Continued page 10
To and From 1967: A Rebellion with Martin Sostre 2 Day Event
T
o and From 1967 : A Rebellion with Martin Sostre, is a two day series of screenings and discussions, that will take place at Frank E. Merriweather Library, 1325 Jefferson Ave Saturday November 18 & 19 with local scholars, artists, storytellers and activists who respond to Sostre’s work and history with stories and conversations on local prison issues and Buffalo’s living history of racism. including Karima Amin, Max Anderson, Ephraim Asili, Paris Henderson, Savion Mingo, Obsidian, Elisa Peebles, and Brett Story. The event remembers Sostre, the African-American owner of a political bookstore on Buffalo’s East Side, who was falsely imprisoned during the rebellion, and, from jail, taught himself law, won two landmark cases and worked tirelessly on prisoners’ rights. Sostre was imprisoned for nine years—six of which were served in solitary con-
finement—and was deemed a “political prisoner” by Amnesty International in 1972, his name resounding in rallies around the world demanding for his release. Sostre’s story and commitment act as a prism for this event series, refracting the ways in which incarceration envelops society at large, situating 1967 in Buffalo, and exploring possible futures rooted among a celebration of the African diaspora, among other discussions The event also marks the installation of Reviving Sostre, a participatory artwork centering Martin Sostre. Local artists Paris Henderson, Savion Mingo, and Obsidian have hand-made custom bookshelves with the goal of recreating Sostre’s presence where his store once stood on Jefferson Avenue. Sostre’s store carried progressive, leftist and Black radical literature. In order to make this revival true to his legacy we call on you to donate your books of these genres. Bring your books to

I
n their ongoing campaign to curb speeding, The Arden Newburgh Block Club would like to acknowledge the sincere dedication of University District Councilmember Rasheed N.C. Wyatt. Due to his lobbying efforts, Mayor Byron Brown last week announced the pilot phase of new speed hump installation on Newburgh Avenue, part of the Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program. "Councilmember Wyatt has been tremendously receptive and supportive of our complaints and concerns about the safety of our streets,” said Arden Newburgh Block Club president Sandria Banks. “Our problem was addressed as a top priority and he consistently kept us on his radar following up and providing speaking opportunities to publicly address this issue. We appreciate his representation of this problem and of the people in our district.” This initiative is part of Mayor Brown's joint traffic-safety initiative between the Department of Public Works and Buffalo Police to slow traffic in high speed areas of Buffalo. Newburgh Avenue is the first to receive a speed hump and four other locations are part of this initiative, including: Woodward Avenue, Bissell Avenue, Florida Street, and Roesch Avenue. Speed humps are being installed in these areas because of 311 and 911 calls, as well as neighborhood complaints of high speed traffic.

"OPEN MIC in BLACK and WHITE"
H
ello Beautiful - Wonderful readers, welcome back to my next "Open Mic in Black and White" ... I Sincerely Appreciate You All for your support and attending ... Please give yourselves a round of applause (clap).
Pictured at last year's Athletlic Greats event (l-r) Richard ("the Lion Hearted" Clark, LeRoi Johnson, Assemblywoman Crystal Peoples Stokes, Mayor Byron Brown and Lum Smith.
Greatness Matters!
On Wednesday November 22 from 8 p.m. – midnight Buffalo’s “Athletic Greats” will NOT gather at Arthur’s Pub as was previously reported. THE NEW LOCATION IS THE METROPOITAN CLUB, 1670 Main Street. Organized yearly by Richard “The Lion Hearted” Clark, the historic gathering is now in its 18th year. One of the highlights is the tribute to those “greats” who have made their transition; tremendous athletes like Zellie Dow, Fred Foster and Al Brown. A lot of the guys have gone on but the Athletic Greats Gathering continues to bring everybody together. The tributes date back 30 and 40 years for some. The public is invited to attend!
It's a pleasure for me to introduce this weeks special guest, coming to the page {stage} put your hands together [applaud] for Dave Stewy !!!!!!! David Steward Jr. was born April 15, 1983 with music running through his veins. Hailing from Buffalo, New York Dave chose to follow in the performing footsteps of his father Mr. David Steward Sr. In an indepth interview, Stewy tells me how he looks up to and loves his father David Sr. He said he vaguely remembers stories of his dad being a former member of a local group called "Gratitude" formed in the early 70's, playing gigs in clubs like the "Peppermint Lounge." Steward is the eldest of three, two younger sisters and himself ... Dave's mother is a huge supporter of her son, reminding her of his father with his singing abilities, but also continuously reaching higher levels as an artist ... Some of his biggest influences include the late great Michael Jackson ( when Stewy first heard MJ's voice he instantly became a fan), Stevie Wonder, Donnie Hathaway and R. Kelly . Brandy Norwood tops his list for favorite vocalists. He sees Brandy as a female version of himself - her style of lyrics as well as vocal delivery. Monica and Lala Hathaway, are a few of the artists he listened to coming up . Dave participated in his first talent show at the age of 9. He was in the 4th grade attending school #6 at that time. Steward was enrolled in Performing Arts from the 5th grade up until completion of 12th grade. Stewy has been writing and performing since the age 11 or 12 ; writing on any and everything, for example the lid of a shoebox which one of his cousins still brings up 'til this day. He began to take writing more seriously around 17 or 18 years of age .
“Knowing when to stop, you can avoid any danger.” -Tao Te Ching
After graduating from high school he attended Canisius College where he studied Physical Education. It was at this point in his life when he started digging deeper into his singing
GOODNESS - writing and music even the more. Dave Stewy wasn't always a solo act. Near the end of his high school term he was in a 5 piece band called "The Smooth Assassins" with singing lead vocals. The group performed at area colleges and institutions like: Buff State, UB and of course Canisius . It was a fun experience and the band members are some of his best friends, but eventually everybody started branching off doing their own thing and are still pursuing their passions . Performing before crowds both large and small, Dave commands the stage with his smooth voice and romantic lyrics, bringing back the essence of R&B . Over the years David has taken his talents across state lines, living in various places such as North Carolina and Virginia acquiring a fan base wherever he's touched down. Locally he has performed in a variety of staple events here in the city for instance the Annual Juneteenth Festival, the Hip Hop Connection, and Twenty-Two Two's. At every performance, this artist tends to soothe his audiences with his authentic R&B vibe . About 10 years ago, while residing in Virginia Dave was homeless for a year and it took him to a state of a mental and physical breakdown, but focusing on his love for music enabled him to bounce back . A divorcee, he is very involved as a father and says his son Lil' David the III who is now 8, is a music lover like himself and loves to sing, which tells me this gift has touched yet another generation of his bloodline! Dave recently released his official, most heartfelt project to date called "I Got Sumthin To Say" on June 30, 2017 on his independent label "Good Stewards Music." I Was personally given a copy of this singer/songwriter, professional performer and entertainer’s CD. I listened to it in its entirety and readers let me just say, I was very well entertained. The material is awesome. I could hear how he put his whole life into his work and I was highly impressed . Track #10 "Red Wine" is my FAVE ... but Track #2 "Preach" is where you can really hear his testimony - telling
his own truths ... David began his tour for this project September 9, 2017 with a kickoff performance in his hometown of Buffalo at Milkie's on Elmwood Avenue. You can also see him performing in the 14th Installment of my "CITYWIDE YOUTH OPEN MIC" {Black Familiez Matter} Edition ... Saturday, 11-18-17' ... from 2- 5 pm at The Rafi Greene CAO Center, 1423 Fillmore Avenue, free and open to the public ... In closing I asked Mr. Steward
Jr., if he had any last remarks or a message to give to our readers (audience) and his response was to simply let people know that he delivers real music feel good music and that he would like people to rest assure that Rhythm & Blues is still alive and doing well ... Dave says that if it wasn't for music, his heart would beat differently, he wishes to at least touch someone's life or soul with his artistry. Such a humble artist, he's an open book ! Again many thanks Dave Stewy for being my featured in the spotlight ... "Get 'Em"! Follow Dave Stewy on his social media platforms, on Facebook - ITunes and SoundCloud: Dave Stewy ...

GENERATIONS
Jr. League Bowlers Enjoy Community Support!
B
By Nanette D. Massey
uffalo has always been a big bowling town. In the 1970's I remember my own mother never missing the t.v. programs "Bowling For Dollars" and "Beat The Champ." I often accompanied her to the bowling alley and spent my coins in the Pac-Man machines while she competed. Thanks to the Buffalo Bowling Senate Junior League, kids don't need to busy themselves in the back while the adults have all the fun. Every Saturday, forty or so kids as young as six gather at Voelker's Lanes on the corner of Amherst and Elmwood to take advantage of the practice time and solid coaching available to them. The coaches are all long time bowlers themselves. Head coach Joe Warr has been working with these juniors for thirty years. Through bowling, Joe has the opportunity to teach kids discipline, teamwork, and how to cope with adversity. Joe himself held the Buffalo record for a three game score (867) nearly twenty years. For only ten dollars a week, this is the caliber of tutelage and guidance available to budding bowlers through this Pictured above: Alivia Morgan (left) Michael Mostiller (middle) junior league. and Justin Spentz (right).
That coaching is evident as you watch 16-year-old Elijah Wood pick up a one pin spare by sending his ball diagonally across the lane with absolute mathematical precision. Elijah has been bowling with the league for six years and owns the bragging rights to an impressive 200 average. He has enjoyed meeting lots of new bowlers over time, and watching them progress as they too stayed on with the league. Elijah can see himself perhaps going pro in the future, winning prize money and using his bowling skills as a source of income. Sonya Cardwell is a parent introducing the fourth generation of her family to bowling through involvement with this junior league. She continues to bring her progeny to the lanes because it is important to her that black children uncover more than the slim hopes offered them through just basketball and football. "There is way more out there and they need to be exposed to that." Kayla Prince, 14, doesn't necessarily consider herself the competitive sort. She describes her bowling average as "all over the place" in the nine years she's participated with the league. Meeting new people and traveling for out-of-town tournaments are their own rewards for her. "I was surprised to hear that the coaches don't even get paid to teach us, they just do it out of the goodness of their hearts. I really appreciate that." The 24 week program starts in September, and benefits from sponsorship by several local businesses. Long time sponsor Ahmed Saleh, owner of Jefferson and E. Ferry's Mandela Mart, has his store's logo proudly emblazoned across the backs of the kids' uniform shirts. He stresses that when young people have activities such as this, they are kept busy and out of trouble. David Pawlick of CSS Construction remembers spending time with his family at Amherst Bowling Lanes near Central Park Plaza. "It's such a positive, family driven sport." When asked to contribute, "it seemed like a natural tie-in from when I used to be involved." The league also owes a great debt of gratitude to Strike Force Bowling (social) Club, and International Wine and Spirits for their support. Individual donations of retired shoes, balls, and other equipment are always welcomed and needed too. In his second year with the program, 8-year-old Zhen Abrams is already noticing that what he's learning about paying attention and aligning the ball just so are also proving to be useful in basketball. With an average score of 104, Zhen swept first place at least year's season closing banquet in all the individual categories for his age group. Zhen, too, is a third generation participant. Velva Baylor, the Buffalo chapter's president, emphasizes that it's not all just fun and games. People don't realize that, just as with any other sport, many colleges offer full scholarships for accomplished bowlers. Ms. Baylor is already entertaining feelers from some historically black colleges looking to fill spots on their teams. Imagine that, bowling skills can potentially save your family sixty, maybe seventy thousand dollars annually in tuition. Interested in finding out more? Contact Lori at Volekers Lanes, (716)876-6020. You can also stop by at 686 Amherst Street Saturdays at noon.

TRAGEDY ON FILLMORE continued from page 3
The death of his mom, he continued, was “devastating.” At the time of the accident I was living with my mom and she was everything to me at that point. We had just talked (before the accident) and I was rushing out to work. “Since her death my sister had a daughter who is now two…but he will never know her grandmother.” Carparcio said the city’s response, especially the mayor, is the biggest disappointment. “My mom was the mayor’s biggest advocate,” he recalled. “She was always speaking up for him, always supporting him…and now she believed he could change the city around, and that was often unfairly criticized…now this situation…. “Next month will be five years and nothing from the city…it’s really a hard situation.” He continued: “the only person who has been consistently sticking up for us is Attorney John Elmore…all these motions…all the legal paperwork…stacks and stacks of legal papers. He is really fighting for us.” “My mother’s death was a total injustice and I believe that it is going to be resolved.” -An Expert’s Conclusion-in arguing against the city’s attempt to have the case dismissed, attorney for the Murphy family is confident that testimony from an expert, will be critical to the upcoming hearing. Walter Signorelli a retired member of the New York Police Department who served in numerous capacities and now teaches police science and criminal law courses at St. John’s University and the John Jay college of Criminal Justice, after reviewing all the facts concluded in a sworn affidavit that among other things, the officer “should have attempted lesser levels of enforce before discharging his weapon”; and that the officer “violated proper police practices and procedures by entering the Parker vehicle and placing themselves (and pedestrians) in a dangerous situation and by shooting Mr. Parker while he drove a moving vehicle and thus causing the subsequent crash of the vehicle and the death of Ms. Murphy.” Their actions also endangered the Fillmore Avenue community with what some witnesses back then called reckless; actions that would never take place in a residential neighborhood in the suburbs. They killed Ida Murphy but they endangered everybody in that neighborhood. -He Was Not ArmedShortly following the tragedy, Fernando Parker said it was not fair that his brother, a former Marine, was getting the share of the blame for the deaths. “Actually the police killed the lady,” he told the media . “My heart goes out to the other family.” According to sources, the city is also attempting to have his family’s wrongful death suit dismissed as well. Ha said had his brother not been shot he would not have crashed his vehicle. “He was not armed…” Fernando lamented. -A.B.

Is Africa Where the Next US Oil Wars Will Be? Cosby Conspiracy Comes Home to Roost... by Bruce Dixon Part 2 Conclusion
Doug Lyons, an African American columnist at the Orlando Sun-Sentinel is one of those ugly Black Americans who see, in the ratcheting up of merciless exploitation of humanity's motherland, great career and business opportunities for a few black henchmen and women. "AFRICOM shouldn't be shunned as another appendage of our nation's military industrial complex, even though it is. It also offers a unique opportunity for Black America. "There's potential for those individuals who have interest in African and African-American heritages to become more knowledgeable about Africa, and its links to the United States. "That knowledge should lead to better cultural understanding and greater business opportunities for blacks on both sides of the Atlantic, in addition to expanded opportunities for African-Americans in world trade and the diplomatic corps. "...imagine the possibilities. The vehicle is about to be put in place, and for a select few, the chance will come to make even more black history. " "AFRICOM will indeed open new vistas for a handful of qualified black Americans in the corporate, military and intelligence establishments." The imaginative need look no further than GoodWorks International, the business consulting firm founded by former Atlanta mayor, UN ambassador and colleague of Dr. Martin Luther King, Andrew Young. GoodWorks is making black history indeed, along with buckets of cash from clients like Barrick Gold, a Bush-connected operation whose Congolese mines help fuel a bloody civil war with 5 million dead and counting so far. Young's firm enjoys intimate and lucrative connections with the shadowy Maurice Templesman , a prominent figure in the trade of African blood diamonds for decades. It's the registered lobbyist for the Nigerian government in Washington, and implicated in at least one money laundering scheme for Nigeria's president Obasanjo, in addition to fronting for various multinational oil and mineral companies on the African continent. "There's an increasing number of...a class of African Americans who...feel no sense of responsibility, no shame, no ties to the continent, who are incapable of playing any kind of role. I think we see that with Condoleezza Rice. We see it even more clearly in some of the other appointments which have been recently made, like for example the new assistant secretary of state for Africa. She seems...an individual to be very concerned about given her past, and her military background, with regard to what type of role she will play in the system. So we see African Americans often emerging as functionaries of the system, the gendarmes, if you will, of the system for the recolonization of Africa both by corporate and military establishment in the United States." Nesbitt seems to agree with Doug Lyons, in a twisted sort of way. AFRICOM will indeed open new vistas for a handful of qualified black Americans in the corporate, military and intelligence establishments. Andy and Condi were first, but they may not be the last. There are plenty more African gold mines, oil tankers and mass graves waiting to be named after black Americans. We asked Dr. Nesbitt what the Congressional Black Caucus and ordinary Americans here ought to be doing to stall imminent US military intervention on the African continent. "We need a stronger voice from the Congressional Black Caucus. It needs to become much more enraged about these developments and help to politicize and educate the masses of the black American community across the country so that we don't let this constant history of the United States [allow them to feel] that they need not worry about any ramifications...from the population that is most concerned... those of us in the African diaspora in the US. I think we are at a very important passage point with regard to the relationships of the African American community in general with the continent of Africa. "Africa is a part of the world that has immense resources and immense riches. But...the history has been nothing but the capitalist system sucking Africa dry of those riches. I think that the particular challenge facing Americans - Americans who care about other human beings, who care about the planet - is what steps will they take to help African people stop this continual rape and plunder of the African continent." George Bush, Big Oil, Andy Young and the Pentagon are already implementing their plan for Africa. It looks like Nigeria, the classic case of a rich country full of poor people. It looks a lot like the impoverished, poisoned, festering wasteland of the Niger delta, where they've had a free hand for decades. And when Africans resist, as they surely will, the backup plan is to declare Africans who want to control their own resources "terrorists", and through AFRICOM, deploy US military might to lock down Africans and African resources. It's time for black America and the Congressional Black Caucus to take Dr. Nesbitt's advice, and come up with a couple of our own plans to end more than five hundred years of Western pillage of Africa, and to keep AFRICOM and the US military off the African continent. “When you dig one ditch, you’d better dig two, ‘cause the trap you set…just might be for you…” (Gospel, “Holding To My Faith)” Since the deluge of women accusing movie producer Harvey Weinstein of sexual abuse poured out into the headlines, many more women have come forward to make long silenced claims of abuse against actors Kevin Spacey, Steven Segal, George Tekei and Dustin Hoffman, comedian Louis C.K., and most recently, Republican senatorial candidate Roy Moore. At least 20 high profile men are now facing charges of abuse. These accusations follow the de-frocking of Bill O’Reilly and Roger Ailes of Fox News, and court settlements with accusers of actor Casey Affleck. Even former child actor Corey Feldman, who came forward years ago with testimony about a Hollywood rife with pedophiles has resurfaced in this new, more responsive environment for victims. How ironic it is that this bold new season of reckoning was ushered in by the wicked conspiracy to humiliate and destroy Bill Cosby! Yes, conspiracy. Yes, they lied. Yes, the combined might of police, politicians, courts and the media were used to destroy yet another one of our greats, take his money, his life achievements and destroy future projects he had in the works. And yes, we fell for it. Again. If we had thought for just a moment, the most obvious question of all would have occurred to us: Since when in America, has a White woman claimed to be raped by a Black man, and found herself alone and powerless, at the mercy of his money and position? Since when? We forgot that just a rumor of the rape of a White woman resulted in the destruction and massacre of the town of Greenwood in Tulsa in 1921. We forgot that the same rumor resulted in the annihilation of Rosewood, Florida in 1923 and the massacre of its residents. A rumored whistle at a White woman left Emmett Till with an eye gouged out, his penis chopped off, and his entire body mutilated. Just a few years before the assault on Cosby, we had participated in the destruction of Michael Jackson, accused of pedophilia, and totally innocent. But centuries of conditioning has left us far more likely to believe the worst of ourselves – than to believe the best. We heard about the deposition in which Bill Cosby admitted to adultery, and concluded he must be a rapist. By the summer of 2014, America was reeling at the brink of anarchy after the rapid succession of killings of 17-year olds Trayvon Martin and Jordan Davis, the Ohio car chase where police fired 137 bullets into the car carrying Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams, the beating death of 17-year old Kendrick Johnson in Valdosta Georgia, the police shooting of 24-year old Jonathan Ferrell in Charlotte, North Carolina, and the shooting of 19-year old Renisha McBride on the porch of Theodore Wafer. She had gone looking for help, just like Jonathan Ferrell after a car accident. Soon after, news broke of Bill Cosby making a television comeback, with Netlix and road projects in the works. But on the heels of that news, we watched the police choke 43-year old Eric Garner to death in New York, and 22-year old John Crawford shot without warning on camera in an Ohio Walmart. Four days later, 18-year old Michael Brown was slaughtered in broad daylight in Ferguson, and left bleeding in the street for five hours. This is the backdrop against which the assault on Bill Cosby began. Protests were erupting everywhere. The entire country had suddenly begun to see the Black man as a victim, and something monumental was needed to turn back the tide, restoring his identity of perpetrator. Cosby wasn’t first to be trotted out. First were NFL unfortunates Ray Rice, Adrian Peterson, and Greg Hardy, all of whom had committed acts of domestic abuse that the NFL had ignored – until they were needed. They were dragged out into the public to be lashed and humiliated, and then, it was time for another volley in a decades old war on “America’s Dad.” The Black man with the most gentle, wholesome image since Michael Jackson was next to face a coordinated assault from every institution in the society, and once again, Black folk could be counted on to turn on him as well. They lied. In this new climate of belief in the stories of victims of sexual abuse, someone must have the courage to say: they lied. Chloe Gaines either made up or was given a detailed, disgusting narrative to describe her alleged attack by Cosby, and was proven in court to be a liar. Cos was in New York when Gaines said she was assaulted in California. Kristina Ruehli had to drop her suit against Cosby when she messed up and told two different stories in different interviews. Louisa Mortiz claimed that Cosby assaulted her on the Tonight Show set while they were both waiting to go on stage – until it was discovered that they never appeared together on the same show. Janice Dickerson says in a 2002 biography that Cosby didn’t want to be bothered with her and put her out of his hotel room – the same one he supposedly raped her in. The evidence of a vast conspiracy to destroy Bill Cosby is there – in plain sight. But as scores of true predators twist and writhe in the trap that was set for him, there’s great news on the horizon. The re-trial that was scheduled for November 6th has been postponed until April 2018, by request of famed powerhouse Attorney Tom Mesereau, who has now taken over his case. No slight to Brian McMonagle and Angela Agrusa who tried the first case, and whose withdrawal just might be the calculated move that earned the delay in the re-trial. But Mesereau is the attorney who snatched Michael Jackson from the jaws of conspiracy, orchestrated by Santa Barbara County DA Tom Sneddon, who was obsessed with destroying him. With hope, the nightmare will end soon for William H. Cosby. With hope, we as a people will find the courage to stand with ourselves, and with those who have dedicated their very lives to us. With hope, a new era of zero tolerance for sexual predation will have been ushered in by the very hands of those who sought to destroy our brother. And may they receive the full measure of what they planned for him.

Buffalo State BENGALS open 2017 season vs Cross Town Rival Villa Maria
NEW BUSINESSES LLC
Youth, quickness and toughness looks to be the hallmarks of this year’s team
T
o long time Buff State Assistant Men’s basketball coach Kevin Glover (and many of us), it “seems like just yesterday” when the BENGALS fell one point short in the semi-finals of the SUNYAC Men’s Basketball playoffs, to eventual Champ SUNY Oswego. However that was nearly eight months ago. A new season is upon us and the excitement at 1300 Elmwood has never been higher! Gone from last year’s team are four starters who contributed to nearly 70% of the BENGALS scoring. However, fear not for your beloved BENGALS because their cupboard is stock full with “goodies!” Let’s start with the preseason SUNYAC (State University of New York Athletic Conference) Player of the favorite, and likely All-American, Mike Henry. This 2nd team all SUNYAC player basically does it all. Mike finished 2016-17 season in the top three of BENGALS stats in scoring, rebounding, assists, free throw attempts and steals last year. Many expect him to be the premier player in the conference, if not the nation! This 6’ 5 senior, from West Genesee Syracuse NY, has all the tools. It’s just a matter of how bad he wants to leave Buff State a winner. He’s accompanied by sharpshooter Zak Ciezki (aka “Bulldog 44”). This quiet 6’ 0 assassin, from Cheektowaga H.S., gave conference foes just a glimpse of what he’s capable of last year. His three point shooting should be top five in the SUNYAC this season, if he can stay healthy. Inside with Henry, will be J. O (“Josh”) Spence, a 6’3 senior from Lima, Costa Rica. Early season reviews see a much improved game from this young man who had some highlight games last season. “Consistency” will be the key to “Josh’s” success. Many within 1300 Elmwood, consider Spence to be the BENGAL “X Factor.” A BIG addition to this year’s team is new comer (6’8 265 lb.) Sophomore Sir Quinton Campbell (Kenmore East H. S.). Quinton should play a major role in helping the inside game of the BENGALS become the dominant front court in the SUNYAC. “Q” (as he affectionately called by his uncle, Buffalo State Assistant Men’s coach
and defensive mastermind Malik Campbell) should be one of the most dominant big men in the east, if “Q” he plays up to his potential. Also inside is freshman Zion Guzman. This 6’ 7 freshman (from Valley Stream South H. S., Valley Stream NY), is a raw talent with a tremendous upside. The son of a Buffalo State BENGAL alum, Zion (aka “Z”) has the Buff State bloodlines and the desire. The rest should take care of itself. “Versatility” will be the name of the game for this year’s BENGALS. This year there are no less than 4/5 players that can fill in anywhere from the two (shooting guard) to the four (power forward) position. Let’s start with Steven Calvo. This 6’ 3 sophomore from Riverdale Kingston Academy (Bronx NY) spent a good amount of the off season in the weight room and the gym. And it shows. You can find Steven playing multiple positions this year, and being effective at all of them. This quiet and well-mannered youngster doesn’t say much but he, much like Ciezki, lets his play do the talking. The same could be said for another product from the Bronx, J. C. Christopher. This 6’ 2 frosh from Mott Haven H. S., has quietly moved up the BENGAL s depth chart by showing that’s he is willing to do whatever needs to be done. Whether it’s bringing the ball up or guarding an opponent’s top scorer, J. C. has shown fearlessness that coach Fajri Ansari’s teams are historically known for. Tyrone Adeyeye, the 6’ 4 transfer from SUNY Potsdam (originally from famed Benjamin Banneker H. S., Brooklyn NY), should step right in and see considerable playing time. Being no stranger to the physical nature of SUNYAC basketball, “Ty” should be able to make an instant impact on the BENGALS fortunes. Add the name of Bryan Harrell to the long list of versatile BENGALS for 2017. This 6’ 3 freshman from Early College, Rochester NY, has “some serious “hops,” and should surprise some folks early on. Bryan is another player who can fill in anywhere along the front court. Freshman Joe Zemon, 6’ 5 from White Plains Hs (White Plains), is another raw talent with size. Joe does whatev-
er is required. No questions asked. He just gets it done. Many believe that he, Milton and Harrell will be the cornerstones of a BENGAL front court that should be dominant, for years to come Do the BENGALS have “Quickness” you ask? That’s like asking are pig feet, pork?? The BENGALS have an abundance of quickness! More than this writer can ever remember. Let’s start with senior Malik Turner. In the running for the starting pointguard for the BENGALS, this 6’ 0 senior (from NIA prep – New York, NY), has shown an uncanny knack at getting to the hoop and running the team. If not Malik then 6’ 2 freshman Kareem Holmes (The Knox School, New York, NY) has shown that he can step in and provide direction to the fast paced BENGAL offense. Kareem has shown a tenacity seldom seen by this writer in first year players. And let’s not forget returning point guard Gabe McQueen. This 5’ 8 dynamo has shown massive improvement since his sophomore season. Stronger, quicker and more aggressive than he was last season. Gabe off-season work should pay big dividends this season. Need a shooter, with quickness, who can also handle? Buff State has plenty of those too. Let’s start with freshman Sheldon Adams. This 6’ 1 combo guard from Bishop Kearney, Rochester NY, has shown it all. He could be a difference maker this season. Add local hoops star, Daniel Reid (Olmstead H. S., Buffalo NY) a 6’ 0 frosh who can add instant firepower at either guard position. This writer believes that Daniel could prove to be a special player as the season moves on. All in all, many BENGAL faithfuls are as excited as they have ever been, with the prospects that the season’s team has. In the tough SUNYAC (a top 12 conference - amongst 46 Division 3 hoops conferences), you don’t have too much time to learn. It’s a quick study for these young men. However they have the best teacher of young men that this writer has ever seen in Head Coach Fajri Ansari. If anyone can help these young men understand that, in basketball ball terms, there will be “live bullets” flying Friday

night vs Villa Maria, coach “Faj” can. His teaching tools that catapulted Turner Carroll to multiple State titles, have only expanded since his arrival at Buffalo State. If should be noted that there are very few places in Buffalo New York, where you can see student athletes, the majority who come from inner cities in NY state, who are not only excellent students, but also are hard-working young men who also double as exceptional athletes. Come to the Sports arena at Buffalo State this year and you will see 15 young men who are exactly that (good students…exceptional young men…talented athletes and very respectful people)… and then some. Hopefully Buffalo and surrounding communities embrace these young men this season. These young
men are great role models for our young boys, some who look to television and/or the streets for their role models. No need for that when these 15 student-athletes are right in our backyard. And it costs nothing for our area youth to see these young athletes in action! If you have a community group, church group or youth group that would like to be guest(s) of the Buffalo State Men’s Basketball Team this season, then please contact Coach Fajri Ansari at 8786519. You won’t regret your visit to 1300 Elmwood and the BENGALS newly remodeled Sports Arena. Season opener is this Friday, November 17th 8 p.m. versus the Villa Maria Vikings, game 2 of the Coles Tourney. Go BENGALS!!
