Local Leaders React to News of Indictment Against Rochester Officer in Beating News of an indictment against a Rochester police officer in the May beating case of Christopher Pate drew praise from Council President Loretta C. Scott. Officer Michael Sippel was indicted on the misdemeanor charge of assault in the third degree. Charges were not filed against Officer Spenser McAvoy, the second officer accused in the beating which took place in May. While he was handcuffed, Pate said, the officers repeatedly punched him in the face. As a result, he sustained a fracture to the occipital bone, a fractured jaw, and other injuries that have required surgery. City Council President Loretta C. Scott released the following statement: Today’s announcement from Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley that the Grand Jury has issued charges against an officer involved in the arrest of Christopher Pate is significant. It shows that we are a community that will not tolerate injustice. The Rochester Police Department exists to serve and protect the people of this community; that is their sole function, and when actions like those that were inflicted on Mr. Pate occur it erodes public trust in law enforcement and furthers the divide between police and people of color. While I am still incredibly saddened by Mr. Pate’s experience, I am encouraged that the wheels of justice are beginning to move in the right direction.” Pate suffered fractures to his skull and jaw as a result of excessive force by the officers. Shortly af ter the incient Mayor Lovely Warren said she saw the body camera footage of the arrest and was troubled by it. In the wake of the indictment the Mayor Warren called the grand jury's decision "the first step in the judicial process. We must accept these decisions and allow the criminal justice system to take its course." Reverend Lewis Stewart of the United Christian Leadership Ministry expressed disappointment in the grand jury’s decision and criticized Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley for not doing more to ensure felony indictments against both officers in the May 5 incident with Pate. The community , he said, did not receive the justice it hoped for. In a grand jury situation, the D.A. is the coordinator," Stewart said. "And, as in the past with other criminal cases involving people in the community, could have fought strongly for a more severe indictment and could have steered it in a way in which both cops should have been indicted. She failed to do so in this case." "There is a history of black men who are given bogus charges after being physically assaulted by the police." Stewart said. "No person, whether a suspect or a perpetrator, should be subjected to a beating." Stewart has long championed the call for an independent civilian police review, a more robust body-worn camera program, and an end to what he calls racial profiling and stop and frisk policies. What happened to Pate, he said, happens too often in this community.
Play it safe. It’s the smart thing to do.
Pegula looking for a Black Figurehead? Yes, according to Carolina Panther Safety Eric Reid’s interview with the Carolina media, he mentioned that Bills owner Terry Pegula wanted a Black figurehead to end the anthem protest last season. Mr. Pegula did not deny the comments and with that lets you know how he truly views Black people. Mr. Pegula likes the old school scheme of divide and conquering Black folk. It’s painfully obvious that he is responsible for running Tyrod Taylor out of town and Buffalo Sabers leading scorer Evander Kane. The Sabers traded Kane for little of nothing and San Jose Sharks signed Kane to a 7 year 49 million contract because teams who are looking to win will pay top dollar for outstanding players. Terry Pegula does not want a Black person to be the face of his franchises. Rex Ryan, former Bills Head coach, told the New York media that Terry Pegula told him to bench Tyrod Taylor or he would be fired and Rex told him to kiss where the sun don’t shine. It’s long overdue for the City of Buffalo and especially Black ommunity to question the hiring practices of Pegula Sports & Entertainment. It’s a shame but according to their website of Pegula Sports & Entertainment, very few to no Blacks or people of color are in any type of leadership roles for the company. This emphasis has transferred over to his pro sports teams and especially the Buffalo Bills have cost them the most due to poor hires. Terry Pegula fired Doug Whaley and replaced him with Brandon Beene, who had no experience at being a General Manager or any type of administrator in an NFL position. He and his next door neighbor Head Coach Sean McDermott have sunk the Buffalo Bills football to levels never seen before. Yes, we have had 2-14 season before yet those teams were able to put points on the board. This 2018 Bills team is not even competitive in most games and it all goes back Terry Pegula not wanting a Black quarterback or General Manager. It was Doug Whaley’s job as General Manager to hire a Head Coach but twice Terry Pegula went behind Mr. Whaley’s back and hired Rex Ryan and then Sean McDermott. Mr. Whaley had no power as an NFL General Manager. It’s obvious thisis how Terry Pegula likes and wants it to be. Mr. Pegula has his coaches are looking for the best White QB they can find no matter how many loses this franchise will suffer under his ownership.

Sixty-seven years ago, Paul Robeson and William L. Patterson, two giants of the struggle for African-American equality, delivered to the United Nations a petition titled “We Charge Genocide: The Crime of Government Against the Negro People.” “Out of the inhuman Black ghettos of American cities,” the introduction began, “out of the cotton plantations of the South, comes this record of mass slayings on the basis of race, of lives deliberately warped and distorted by the willful creation of conditions making for premature death, poverty and disease … ” Among the signers were the eminent African-American historian and freedom fighter Dr. W.E.B. DuBois, George Crockett Jr., later a distinguished judge in Detroit who went on to serve many terms in the U.S. Congress, New York City councilman Benjamin J. Davis, Jr., Ferdinand Smith, Black leader of the National Maritime Union, Dr. Oakley C. Johnson of Louisiana, Aubrey Grossman, the labor and civil rights lawyer, and Claudia Jones, a Communist leader in Harlem later deported under the witch-hunt Walter-McCarran Act. Also signing were family members of the victims of “legal lynching”: Rosalee McGee, mother of Willie McGee, framed up on rape charges, and Josephine Grayson, whose husband, Francis Grayson, was one of the Martinsville Seven, framed and executed on false rape charges in Virginia. In the section titled “Evidence,” hundreds of cases of lynching were documented. The petition charged that since the abolition of slavery at least 10,000 Black people had been lynched. The full number, it stated, will never be known because the murders were often unreported. The petition exposed a conspiracy to deny Black people the right to vote through poll taxes, literacy tests and outright terrorism. It brings to mind the “vote scrubbing” of 87,000 Black voters in Florida that enabled George W. Bush to steal the 2000 election.

With the Name of God the Gracious the Merciful
The Straight Path
-A Message of Divine GuidancePeace be unto you.
W
e will continue with verses of the previous scriptures dealing with the beginning of the Children of Israel . (Genesis 9, 18) This verse speaks of the progeny of Noah: the father of Shem, Ham, and Japhet. This is of great significance because the Children of Israel came from Noah by way of Shem and from Shem came Abram who was later called Abraham. This is important is because it does establish the fact that we are not Jews there is nowhere in the Torah where the term Jew is mentioned as a referral to the children of Israel and that the word Judah is where the term Jew may have originated. Judah is the fourth son of Israel. Now Abraham was the father of Isaac who then was the father of Jacob. (Genesis 17, 15-19). Not only was it mentioned that the coming of Isaac was a miracle but an everlasting covenant was also established when Isaac begot Jacob - a very interesting story where the birth of two nations occurred. (Genesis 25, 19-26). Later on in the life of Jacob his name was changed from Jacob to Israel not only was it a name change it was a blessing. (Genesis 32, 25-28). However that was not the only time that name change was mentioned. (Genesis 35, 9-11). There was also a second occurrence of name change and also more blessings. We are a nation of twelve tribes and their names are mentioned in (Genesis 35, 23). None of the tribes were called Jews. Further on in the lives of the Children of Israel, we were enslaved in Egypt and stayed for four hundred and thirty years but were still referred to as the Children of Israel. (Exodus 12, 40). The reason we forget our own names is because we broke the covenant of God. (Deuteronomy 32, 26-35). It is very easy for the world to know who we are just look anywhere in the four corners of the earth where we are scattered you will find us. We will be there until (Isaiah 43, 1-28), a chapter which has laid out the plan of the most High God, until then come and study with us in preparation for the enactment of his plan.

Award Winning Director Ed Smith Returns to Buffalo To Direct August Wilson's King Hedley II “I will go anywhere in the world to direct any of Mr. Wilson’s plays…It’s an honor to be back home in Buffalo!” -Ed Smith
E
dward G. “Ed” Smith, a celebrated, awardwinning director who helped establish Black theatre in Buffalo, returned here several weeks ago to direct August Wilson’s King Hedley II which opens this weekend at the Paul Robeson Theatre on Friday, November 9. No stranger to the genius playwright’s works, it was back in the 80’s that Ed directed another August Wilson masterpiece Joe Turners Come and Gone, with the Stephen B. Henderson at the Studio Arena. Ed pointed out that Studio Arena was first theatre in this area to produce an August Wilson play. In 2016 Henderson appeared in the film adaptation as a co-star with Denzel Washington in another popular August Wilson masterpiece, Fences. “It’s good to be back in Buffalo," Ed said acknowledging the talent this area has produced over the years. “I like the cast of King Headley II” he continued, adding that he was glad to have the opportunity to be here to work with them. “I did this play in St. Louis ten years ago. The story takes place in 1985 and it is one of his (Wilson’s) last plays. It’s a good play and the longest play of the 10 he’s written.” The audience will be able to appreciate the significance of King Headley II he continued, because even though the story takes place in 1985…and this is 2018, “it shows how nothing has really changed for us and how we still have the same problems,” he said. “It’s really about Black folks trying to get ahead and always being pushed back by the establishment.” -LegacyEd’s first gig in Buffalo was in 1967 where he traveled from New York and became a member of the Children’s Theatre at Studio Arena. In 1969 he permanently moved to Buffalo and started the Buffalo Black Drama Workshop in 1972. In the '70s, he also helped to start Black Canada in Toronto. Armed Extremists Group Threatens Violence on Eve of Election
A
fter weeks of contentious campaigning, threats, and racially charged attacks, Democratic candidate Stacey Abrams took on Republican Brian Kemp to become Georgia’s next governor and America’s first female African American governor. At press time the winner had not been announced. But it is notneworthy to report that an extremist group calling themselves “III% Security Force Intel” threatened violence is she emerged the winner. According to numerous posts made to their Facebook page, the group has long stood against Abrams and her platform. In recent weeks, the group seems to have grown more and more radicalized by the approach of the midterms, and the widely predicted “blue wave.” In a recent post, which was later edited, according to The Root, the group wrote to tell the world that they “have President Trump’s 6,” military slang for having his back. “Monday you will see III% Security Force tell the world that We have President Trump’s 6. If commies win Tuesday and go forward with usurping and impeaching, you gotta come through III%. We will defend our President,” the post reads. “We want President Trump to kick the sh&#@ out of deep state / police state. And Stacy (sic) Abrams for Governor in Ga, you flag burning, gun grabbing, socialist bit%#..we will defend our state from you, f--- you. Tune in Monday for the exclusive. Guns Up !” The leader of the Georgia branch of III% Security Force Intel told Danish news outlet TV2 that, “Democrats are far more dangerous” than Islamic extremists. “They want to remove our weapons, and all we have to say is that they can just try.” These threats of violence follow numerous attacks on Abrams and her campaign that have lasted the entirety of her run. The past few weeks alone have seen malfunctioning Georgia voting machines switching votes from Abrams to Kemp, a series of racist robocalls, and even an investigation into the state’s Democratic party by none other than Kemp himself. These threats are the latest of the attempts to derail her campaign.

A Little Motivation...
et up and take a step towards your dreams today. We spend so much time supporting other people’s dreams. When you put on your sneakers you are supporting the owners of Nike’s dreams. When you get in your car you are supporting the car designer’s dreams. When you turn on a song, you are supporting that artist’s dreams. But what are you doing to support your own dreams today? We only get this one life, spending it doing something that matters to you. Just think, however much time you have in your life, one third of it you will be asleep, one third of it you will be at work that doesn’t leave a lot of time for you to be wasting days. You can decide that you are going to live each day as if you won’t get another chance at it. It doesn’t matter what happened to you last year, or what opportunities you didn’t get. What matters is what are you going to do now. It’s easy to blame someone else, it’s easy to complain or tear down people on Facebook. But it takes courage to act. It takes guts to work day in and day out for something that is important to you. Creating change is difficult and messy sometimes, and you are going to make mistakes. But that is the beauty of life, you don’t have to be perfect or even pretend to be. Everyone is flawed, and the people that own it usually are the ones who have the most joy in their lives. So you have to decide, are you going to do average things, and have an average life, or are you going to dream big and make an impact on the world. Every day you say no to your dreams, you could be pushing

your dreams back a whole 6 months. – Eric Thomas. Fear isn’t real !!!! Fear is an illusion that we create. It is insane that we will create fear in ourselves and then act on that illusion that we made up as if its real. I’m not saying that we won’t have hard times, some ups and some downs. But giving up on yourself, giving up on your dream is easy. The real challenge is what do you do when you get knocked down, how do you persevere when nothing is going right or your back is against the wall. I encourage you to love yourself like you love your children, believe in yourself like you believe in the hope you have for your children. The final chapter of your life hasn’t been written. You are not too old to still accomplish something great. My mother Iris Kirkwood motivates me
so much. She is 64 and she is actively perusing her dream of becoming an artist. She Duncan dra ws Kirkwood t h e s e beautiful pieces of fantasy art and submits them to galleries across the country. It isn’t easy, and she is just now starting to see the success and recognition that she has been working towards. But she could have hung it up after she retired from nursing, but she keeps chasing her dream every day. That is what we all have to do. Find our purpose, and then fight like hell to fulfill it. I challenge you all to take a step toward your dream today!

tarting at 11am Friday November 9 at One Canalside in Downtown Buffalo, the Subsidy Tour, hosted by OUR CITY as part of Anti-Displacement Month, will provide an opportunity for the public to better understand how our tax dollars are being spent. The tour will highlight the abuse of the City's tax exemption program 485-a that has been reported on by the Public Accountability Initiative and the Buffalo News, most recently. It will also include examples of communitydriven development that should be better funded through public dollars and supported by elected officials. Speakers include: John Washington, Director of Organizing, PUSH Buffalo; Rob Galbraith, Senior Researcher of the Public Accountability Initiative; Dennice Barr, President, Fruit Belt Advisory Council; Andrew Marcum, Member, Buffalo Transit Riders United; and Harper Bishop, Director of Equitable Development, Open Buffalo Amid a growing housing affordability crisis, the City of Buffalo has been compelling taxpayers to subsidize the construction of luxury housing through a state property tax exemption program called 485-a. The program, which was approved by the state government in 2002 and opted-into by the Buffalo Common Council later that year, excuses property taxes on properties converted from non-residential to mixed use over a period of 12 years, forcing other property owners in the city pick up the tab. Tour is free, participants must sign up ahead of time. Reserve your seat for the tour through the Eventbrite site. Lunch will be provided by Golden Cup. This is your money. For Student Athletes by A Former Student Athlete: Part 3 The Art of Competition It’s the last home game of my senior season. It’s the last time I’ll play on the University at Buffalo’s Alumni Arena wood floor as a Bull and we are on the brink of a championship, something the school had never done before in the Mid-American Conference. Unfortunately for us, the MAC player of the year showed up to play and we went into half time of this game down 13 points. Our head coach was giving us a halftime locker room speech and all I could hear was my own voice on top of white noise. “I’m not losing today.” Then I blurted out, “Coach, I got em’!” For a split second, I thought about how many excuses I could use to validate my decision in choosing not to guard AT THE POINT him. I was the point guard and I needBY ed to have energy on the offensive end GREGORY L. GAMBLE II to keep things moving. He was bigger than me by about 5 inches and he was stronger than me. I hadn’t come out of the game yet and had a feeling that I wouldn’t be anytime soon. I didn’t know if the MAC player of the year was a winner or a loser, but I knew I wouldn’t be subject to him making that decision on that day. Immediately following those thoughts, I made a decision to rid myself of the thought of defeat and that’s when a solution came to me, “Don’t even let him touch the ball, no excuses.” The game resumed and we went on to defeat our opponent in overtime and the MAC player of the year was withheld from scoring a single point the rest of the game. What is the power that an excuse possesses? An excuse provides the door to make an escape from the weight of responsibility. When you replace your obligation with an excuse, you give yourself the opportunity to find a reason why you “can’t” and you alleviate yourself from the pressure of being right or wrong. The word ‘compete’ has a very simple and direct definition; to strive to gain or win something by defeating or establishing superiority over others who are trying to do the same. But there is an art to this because you will fall short making an attempt to establish superiority. The difference between a winner and loser is their mindset. No matter the sport, no matter the circumstance in life, winners don’t lose. Winners either win or they (L)earn. There are no losses to winners. Losers accept defeat and repeat the actions that got them there. What is the Art of Competition? The Art of Competition is finding the solution that equates to victory despite favorable or unfavorable conditions. The Art of Competition exist when your will and your desire to win is greater than your desire to accept defeat. Excuses literally do not exists to a true competitor and winners don’t follow paths, they blaze trails.
RISE UP RIGHT!/ Highlights in Sports I want to thank everyone for supporting Rise Up Right and the Challenger Community News. Let's get right into the highlights. UB Football News On a night where most people ask for a trick-or-treat, beggars night turned into a treat for the growing and loyal fans of the Bulls stampede as UB defeated the Miami OH Redhawks 51-42. The Bulls showed us why it is important to play four quarters of football. They out-scored the Redhawks 9-0 in the final quarter and the defense held their ground by shutting the Redhawks out after giving up 42 points in the first 3 quarters. Tyree Jackson had another stellar performance throwing for 358 yards and three touchdowns. Jaret Patterson run for 96 yards and a score and Anthony Johnson who in my opinion is the best wideout in the country had a historic night scoring 3 touchdowns and racking up 238 yards of receiving. Can the Bulls finish 9-1 and win the MAC Conference Championship? The answer lies on the road ahead.

Jack Eichel also added 3 assists as the Sabres need to continue to get production from their first line. The Sabres visit the Montreal Canadiens, and will be playing at home against the Vanucover Canucks, and the Tampa Bay Lightning this week. Can the Sabres move up spots in the Atlantic Division as they currently sit in 5th place.
