Chief Cynthia Herriott-Sullivan announced her resignation, effective Oct. 13, during a Wednesday appearance on WDKX radio. The city later sent out a release, formally announcing her retirement. Deputy Chief of Operations David Smith will replace Herriott-Sullivan as interim chief. Smith, 53, has been with the department since Cynthia Herriott-Sullivan 1992. Herriott-Sullivan, 61, became the first woman to lead the RPD, after the entire RPD command staff resigned their positions, and Mayor Lovely Warren later fired Chief La'Ron Singletary. Warren appointed Herriott-Sullivan in late September of last year. Her first official day was Oct. 14, 2020. She initially agreed to serve in the position through June 2021. During a press conference Wednesday afternoon, HerriottSullivan said she intends to return to the Rochester Housing Authority, where she worked before accepting the interim chief position.

“THANK YOU ROCHESTER!” Mayor Lovely Warren to resign as part of plea deal Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren agreed to resign shortly before her term ends as part of a deal to settle charges she violated campaign finance rules during her 2017 reelection campaign. Warren was scheduled to go on trial Monday on felony charges she and two assistants took steps to evade contribution limits. Instead, Warren and her two co-defendants each pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of accepting campaign contributions that exceeded legal limits, according to the Monroe County district attorney’s office. The deal also resolves separate charges related to unsecured firearms in her home. She did not answer questions from reporters as she left court, but later in the day posted a statement on Facebook. “Leaving the past behind and looking forward to a brighter future. Thank you Rochester,” Warren wrote. “We’ve accomplished a lot together, but in the end, I thank God that I’m able to choose family over everything.”

Market Days at the International Plaza Now Sundays Only The International Plaza, 828 N. Clinton Ave., will now host Market Days on Sundays only, from 1–5 p.m. The season will continue with the Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations and a grand closing will take place on October 17.

Simran S. Gordon, 24, was shot and killed by Rochester police last Wednesday evening during an armed robbery attempt at the Family Dollar store on West Main Street. Police report that Gordon died in an exchange of gunfire. On Tuesday (Oct. 12) City Councilmembers Council President Loretta C. Scott, Vice President Willie J. Lightfoot, Northeast District Representative Michael A. Patterson, and Northwest District Representative Jose M. Peo released the following statement regarding the Family Dollar Attempted Armed Robbery: "Today, the City Council viewed the body worn camera footage from the October 6 attempted armed robbery at the Family Dollar on West Main Street. We would like to start by offering our condolences to the family members and loved ones of the deceased, Simran S. Gordon. "Chair of Public Safety and the Roc Against Gun Violence Coalition, President Lightfoot said, “I will continue to pray and work toward a Rochester where our citizens do not resort to such violent acts, and where no lives are lost as a result of gun violence.” "Nevertheless, the officers involved in this incident upheld their duty to protect innocent bystanders and kept the customers and employees safe from harm, and we must commend them for that. The bravery of the staff who called 911 and the heroic acts of the responding officers saved any additional lives from being lost. We encourage anyone impacted by the trauma of this incident to seek support by calling 211, or by talking to a trusted family member, loved one, or professional. "While we often focus on the complexity of policecommunity relations and the need for reform in our public safety system, we also need to acknowledge the difficult nature of a police officer’s job and their willingness to step into the line of fire to protect citizens."

he Buffalo Bills had to not only deal with a Kansas City Chief football team, but the elements came into play with a one hour fourteen-minute weather delay due to lightning and heavy downpours at Arrowhead Stadium. It seemed both teams were served Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches during the delay and most importantly the team remained focused and exploited a poor Chiefs defensive unit. I was surprised to see the Bills have a quality tight end in Dawson Knox, who had 3 passes for a career high of 117 yards. That was the second most yards by a Bills tight end since Paul Costa had 163 yards against the Oakland Raiders in 1967. WOW, that’s almost shocking that the Bills teams in the last pass happy decade has not had a dominating tight end. It looks like that University program that Bills Dawson Knox attended is beginning to pay off huge dividends for him and the Bills. Josh Allen is starting to mature and not allow the moment to be too big for him. Allen did take one unnecessary sack in the game. He seems to have a very strong desire to win and win at all cost which you don’t see in most quarterbacks. The intangibles on Josh Allen are his determination to be the best player he possibly can and continues to work on his short comings to be the best player at his position. Allen was 15 of 26 for 315 passing yards, 3 TD’s and 59 yards rushing for 1 TD. The key items to take from Josh Allen is not throwing the ball a lot and much more running plays are now being called. The Bills ran the ball for 121 yards rushing and this will continue to be a key factor going to the next level. The Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll is finally finding out you don’t need to have the ball in Josh Allen’s hands all the time and spread things out with a string running game. The move of Spencer Brown to right tackle and Daryl Williams moving inside to right guard seems to be working and gives the Bills a much bigger offensive line. The running backs can only get better behind this huge line. The Bills defensive unit is having an outstanding season and held Kansas City to 20 points, their third lowest regular season total since the beginning of the 2018 season. Bills Defensive Coordinator Leslie Frazier has his unit playing fast and getting to the ball. Bills defensive back Taron Johnson had 12 tackles and 1 pass defense. The newly signed Bill continues to be an unsung hero who plays outstanding in the biggest games. The Bills front office is finally signing players to extensions before they become free agents, which

ore than four decades after they were profiled, wrongly blamed, falsely accused, and then wrongly indicted, tried, convicted, and sentenced to spend more than two decades in NYS prisons, The Buffalo 5's John Walker and Darryl Boyd have arrived nearly full-circle. On Tuesday, October 5, inside Buffalo Common Council Chambers, in downtown Buffalo, they were presented with a special proclamation from the City Of Buffalo's Common Council. The proclamation paid tribute to John's and Darryl's 45-year long struggle to gain the dismissal of their wrongful 1976 indictment, and the vacation of their wrongful 1977 convictions. John Walker and Darryl Boyd are two of the United States of America's most recent Wrongful Conviction Exonerees! The proclamation they received duly acknowledged their having achieved that crucial social justice victory, and cite their having been selected for inclusion in the internationally renowned National Registry of Exonerations [NRE]. John and Darryl will join three other Buffalonians who are currently listed in that database, along with the year of their Wrongful Conviction Exoneration. It focuses on those that have occurred in the USA, since 1989. Now administered by the University of California At Irvine's Newkirk Center For Science & Society, the University of Michigan Law School, and the Michigan State University College of Law, the NRE contains information concerning some 2870 individualswrongly convicted of crimes. Altogether these individuals were deprived of more than 25,600 years of their lives, due to this nation's criminal justice system remaining in dire need of reform. According to the NRE, African Americans, who are just 13% of the U.S.'s population, are a majority of the innocent defendants who are wrongfully convicted of crimes, only to be exonerated often decades later. In 2016, these persons constituted more than 47% of the 1,900 exonerations that were listed in the NRE. That is nearly 900 individuals! John and Darryl are indeed very grateful for the progress they have finally been able to gain. They hope their many supporters situated throughout the Upstate Western New York community will share in this very momentous occasion, and incredible honor.

He previously served as Sports Director for Power 96.5 radio. Freeman is also a sports Freeman feature writer for the Buffalo Criterion Newspaper. Dr. Freeman is the author of “The Art of the Interview.” A campus police officer from 1990 until 2019, he is also the co-owner ATL Philly Steak Sandwich food truck. He was elevated to a 33rd and last degree in masonry and elected as the District Deputy Grandmaster (Emeritus) of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of New York in 2015.

Cathay Williams, The First Known Woman To Enlist In The United States Army, And The Only Known Female Buffalo Soldier Cathay Williams (18441894) was the only female known to serve as a Buffalo Soldier, and the first woman and African-American woman to enlist in the United States Army. Cathay Williams was born to a free father and an enslaved mother, making her a slave. She worked as a house slave during her youth on the plantation near Jefferson City, Missouri. Prior to her voluntary enlistment, she was captured by Union forces in 1861 along with other slaves, and forced to serve as military support. She traveled with the infantry and was present at the Red River Campaign and the Battle of Pea Ridge. In 1866, Cathay Williams enlisted in the U.S Regular Army as a man under the false name of “William Cathay” because women were prohibited from serving in the military. She went through the recruitment process which included a physical examination – which she passed. The recruiter assigned her to the 38th U.S. Infantry, Company A as William Cathay, a 22-year-old, 5’9, black-eyed Continued Page 12

Coronavirus Update

Coronavirus cases are declining in the US. But the number of new infections in children remains "exceptionally high" with 148,222 cases reported in the week ending October 7, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. It said, children represented nearly a quarter of weekly reported cases. Nationally, Covid-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths have been dropping. In the past week, an average 87,676 people reported infections and 1,559 people died of the virus a day, data from Johns Hopkins University shows. The infection rate is still well above what's needed to get con-

trol of the pandemic, with Dr. Anthony Fauci saying it should be below 10,000 a day. -CNN.

This is in regards to the necessity of having a "Home Inspection." Purchasing a home is your personal investment. With that thought in mind, your best interest of "being a proud homeowner as an asset", becomes a reality. Congratulations! 1. Home inspection: Inspection fees range from an estimate of $200.00 to $575.00. A referral for a "Professional Inspector" is always useful. The inspection should reveal information about the condition and systems. This is where the Purchaser(s) will be aware of necessary costs, items requiring attention earlier

and in the future. The purchaser should review the report with their real estate agent and decide what is best and if they should decide to move forward with the purchase. 2. Health / SafetyFocus: Be mindful of mold, gas, radon and carbon monoxide. If detected by the Inspector, tests should be conducted and results issued in the report. In addition smoke detectors/all others should be on board and in working condition. If not, this should be cited in the report. Lincoln United Methodist Women Community Conversation on Interrupting the School to Prison Pipeline with India Walton

he United Methodist Women of Lincoln Memorial United Methodist Church are hosting a Racial Equity and Social Justice Town Hall on Tuesday October 19 at 6 P.M., 641 Masten Ave. in the City of Buffalo. This community conversation will focus on one of the UMW’s mission focus on racial justice and interrupting the school to prison pipeline. They have invited India Walton, the first African – American woman to earn the Democratic Nomination for Buffalo Mayor, to share her vision and thoughts on this issue. This Town Hall will focus on the need to address racial equity in housing, business development, education and criminal

justice as a means to interrupt the school to prison pipeline in the region. The United Methodist Women have been engaged in progressive causes for over 150 years taking positions on social justice issues and working to change legislation, systems and practices they consider unjust or oppressive. They continue to build on this foundation as they work to end maternal mortality, fight for a living wage for all, interrupt the school-to-prison pipeline, and ensure justice for all. The theme is" Ending Nuclear Weapons for People and The Planet." This year’s guest of honor will be The King’s Bay Plowshares (KBP7) featuring Clare Grady and Mark Colvill who will both speak and receive the Peace Center’s Peace Education Award. The WNY Peace Center supports and is inspired by many of the issues raised by the KBP7. The Kings Bay Plowshare 7 are a faith based Catholic activist group which centralize disarmament of nuclear weapons as a symbolic demonstration that peace on earth and unity among all is not only possible but essential. Their continued nonviolent efforts give life to the responsibility to humanity and each other which we all carry. Because the work that they do at times results in their incarceration, members of the Kings Bay Plowshare 7 also maintain communication with those that find themselves in prison, and support them and their families in all the ways that they can throughout the process of liberating them. The WNY Peace Center has a long and intertwined history with the KBP7 which includes being co-defendants with KBP7 members in a number of actions, as well as partners and friends in the work, through the Upstate Drone Action – The Upstate NY Coalition to Ground the Drones and End the Wars and Witness Against Torture - Campaign to End Torture & Close Guantánamo. We are honored to welcome the Witness Against Torture program as a new addition of the Center and invite all to make donations to said program through the website or by mail. Chanon Judson to Lead First Urban Bush Women Residency at UB

B alumna Chanon Judson, co-artistic director of the Urban Bush Women (UBW) dance company, has joined the faculty of the Department of Theatre and Dance. Judson, BFA ’01, a highly esteemed choreographer, performer, educator and community leader, will take a lead role in overseeing the comparative jazz dance curriculum, as well as contributing to the educational excellence of the MFA dance program and collaborating with the greater UB and Buffalo communities. The first UBW Dance Residency is taking place at UB this week, with company members teaching classes and workshops for students and developing new work for UBW in the Center for the Arts’ Black Box Theatre. can American root systems,” says Judson, visiting associate professor. “This study asks for the interrogation and reframing of my lens, in regards to jazz dance history and my own formation story that is as much a product of African American form and founding as it is of colonized-codified form, where White men are championed as the genre’s ‘pioneers.’” The Department of Theatre and Dance’s collaboration with UBW helps to fulfill an educational priority to give new and upcoming student-artists exposure and access to professionals in the field. The engagement between the groups will not only

expand opportunities for student and faculty research and creative activity, but will also bring a diverse array of artist-scholar-collaborators to UB. “This new partnership feels like a gift,” says Anne Burnidge, associate professor and department chair. “I can’t wait to see how it grows and develops, and how our students, university and community are expanded by the opportunity to work with and learn from Chanon and these amazing artists.” UBW galvanizes artists, activists, audiences and communities through performances, artist development, education and community engagement. With the groundbreaking performance ensemble at its core, and ongoing programs including the Summer Leadership Institute (SLI), BOLD (Builders, Organizers & Leaders through Dance) and the Choreographic Center Initiative, UBW promotes artistic legacies; projects the voices of the underheard and people of color; brings attention to and addresses issues of equity in the dance field and throughout the United States; and provides platforms and serves as a conduit for culturally and socially relevant experimental art makers. Two Burchfield Penney Exhibitions Amplify the Legacy of James G. Pappas and Black Arts in Buffalo The artwork of highly respected artist James G. Pappas, and his visionary leadership as a co-founder of the Langston Hughes Center are the subject of two new exhibitions at the Burchfield Penney Art Center.

he exhibit "James G. Pappas: Relative to Music," spans his prolific career. Pappas’s abstract expressionist style pulls strong influence from his love of jazz music, while contending with the sociopolitical realities of American life for Black communities. Like jazz, his work is a lasting testament to experimentation, innovation, and improvisation, breaking the mold to imagine new possibilities. The second exhibit, "Founders," explores the early history of the Langston Hughes Center for the Visual and Performing Arts, which Pappas founded with fellow artists Allie Anderson, Clarence Scott, Wilhelmina Godfrey, and Hal Franklin. Opening at its 25 High St. location in 1971, the arts center offered an expansive range of workshops, exhibitions, performances, and lectures. Providing access to the arts and technical training, its organizers championed social change. While the pandemic stalled planning for a Pappas solo exhibition, it opened the doors to something far greater. “During earlier discussions we talked about the photograph of five of the six artists showcased in the 1968

exhibition 'Six from the City.' Pappas explained the importance of each person and their involvement in the formation of the Langston Hughes Center in the early 1970s,” said Tullis Johnson, Burchfield Penney manager of exhibitions. “After looking for information about the center online, it became clear that this story needed to be shared more broadly, even more so because of the parallels between that time in American history and today,” he said. Co-curators Tiffany Gaines and Tullis Johnson, with assistance from archivist Heather Gring, embarked on an extensive research journey. Locating lost archival materials, documentation, and building relationships with community members, they mapped the history of the center which extends beyond the City of Buffalo. The Challenger Community News also helped connect the dots. “We learned how these artists were so committed to creating a space to uplift and empower communities. Their ideas and action fulfilled needs, laying a blueprint for the next generation of cultural changemakers,” said Tiffany Gaines, Burchfield Penney curatorial and digital content associate.

“So much of this history is at risk of being lost and underlines the importance of archiving and documenting this important work, particularly in marginalized communities,” noted Gaines. “The exhibition is an unprecedented opportunity to give Pappas, a longtime friend of the Burchfield Penney, and the leaders of the center well-deserved recognition and interpret their stories to larger audiences.”

"Founders," focused on the center from 1968-1975, only begins to scratch the surface of its history within the cultural landscape of the region. “The accomplishments of that early iteration of the center and its founders, would only begin to tell the story we wanted to share. With plans to focus on some of the other founders, teaching artists and friends in exhibitions and programs, our hope is to eventually tell a larger story that our community can be proud of,” said Johnson. “This is the beginning, an introduction to a significant history with many more layers to unpack and Black artists to recognize going forward,” said Gaines. A $500 startup business grant was awarded to 17-year-old Machi Gibbs, a Hutchinson Central Technical High School senior and founder of Buffalo, NY-based fashion brand Brytelife. Colorfully designed durags, bonnets and fashion accessories fill Machi’s book bag. He sold his first piece of art at the age of 15, starting his entrepreneurial journey as a graphic artist and painter who created logos and designs for local businesses. During the pandemic, his inspiration for launching Brytelife was identifying the problem his friends had finding protective, fashionable and customized durags.
