Honoring Jalil Muntaqim

nderstanding history from a diversity of perspectives is essential if we are to understand the world. Today, with book bans and curriculum bleaching, It’s more important than ever that we counter neofascism with deep education. Last month was also known as Black August, a time of reverence for the political prisoners and martyrs in the Black freedom struggle. Begun in 1978 to mark the assassination of the imprisoned Black Panthers George Jackson, Jonathan Jackson and Jeffrey Khatari Gaulden, Black August recognizes how the struggle for emancipation has been met with violence from the state, especially the forms of police violence, hyper surveillance, incarceration. The Black freedom struggle is rooted in love for people, and the vision, tenacity, and resilience in this tradition has a lot to teach us all. Here at Citizen Action, one of our very Jalil Muntaqim own organizers was a political prisoner. Jalil Muntaqim is a respected elder, veteran Black Panther Party and Black Liberation Army member, and one of the longest held political prisoners in the United States. During the nearly 50 years that he was incarcerated, Jalil never stopped organizing, educating and being a force against racial, colonial and imperialist oppression. We honor Jalil’s struggle and that of his comrades. Freedom fighters play an important part in our history - especially at a time when there are so many attempts to rewrite history. And as Citizen Action celebrates its 40th year, it’s important that this organization is doing the work to achieve racial justice. Now more than ever, it’s critical that we build multi-racial, multi-ethnic and multi-cultural coalitions to protect each other and achieve the change that liberates every last one of us. Please invest in our work and be part of this change with us. It’s our 40th anniversary and I invite you to donate $40 - one for every year. Every contribution, large and small, helps keep us door-knocking, phone-banking, hosting community events and organizing. The struggle for freedom continues. I hope you’ll join us in continuing to embracing Black August and immerse yourself in the rich history of Black resistance to oppression, from the Haitian Revolution to the Ferguson uprising and onward. Black August is a reminder of the power of our solidarity in the face of state violence, racism, and all forms of oppression. In strength and unity, -Rosemary Rivera

Basketball Great “Mel” Montgomery Dies Melvin “Mel” Montgomery died on Friday, September 15, 2023 at Absolut Care of Westfield, NY following a long illness. Montgomery starred for Canisius in the early 70s, after graduating from Buffalo's Kensington High School. The 1970s was said to have had the greatest depth of talent in Western New York high school basketball history. Montgomery was among that group. Wrote one sports reporter: “Mel Montgomery, a 6-foot-5, 210-pounder from Kensington who may have been the ultimate "man among boys" player ever in Western New York. Montgomery was the Moses Malone of area big men in the '70s. He dominated and intimidated inside on offense and defense. He didn't have any shooting range beyond 8 feet, but he didn't need it. He set a record for points scored in Yale Cup games as a senior with 384 (32 ppg) and averaged 20 rebounds a game. Kensington won the Yale Cup and the sectional titles and went 18-0 overall.” Howard Garfinkel, Godfather of the famed Five-Star Basketball Camp praised Montgomery. "He was a human scoring machine inside, and he was a fantastic kid.“ -Submitted by Jerry Brown

by Ku Klux Klan members ripped through a Birmingham Alabama church, killing four little girls and injuring dozens of others in the assembly. The bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church was one of the deadliest acts of violence to take place during the Civil Rights movement and evoked criticism and outrage from around the world. In the aftermath of the bombing, riots and violent demonstrations broke out throughout Birmingham, resulting in the death of two young African American boys. Following a tainted investigation by the FBI, Robert Chambliss, an active member of the Ku Klux Klan, was arrested and charged with murder and the possession of dynamite without a permit. Chambliss was acquitted of murder charges until 1977 when the reopening of the case resulted in his conviction, 14 years after the bombing. Later, two additional conspirators, Thomas Blanton and Robert Cherry, were tried and convicted for their roles in the church bombing.

Artist XIII Illustrates 2023 COLTRANE Celebration Poster This year the 2023 COLTRANE Celebration commemorative poster was illustrated by outstanding Buffalo-based artist XIII. XIII is a multidisciplinary artist, whose work is inspired by the relationship between the human experience, futurism, spirituality, and tradition. This inspiration is reflected in the materials used, as well as the subjects chosen. XIII uses rich and vibrant colors in both her physical and digital work to depict ideas through a mystical and/or supernatural lens. XIII was interested in the arts at a very young age, claiming the desire to pursue drawing and fashion in grade school. She artist XIII attended the Buffalo Academy for Visual & Performing Arts as a visual arts major and Daemen College as an Illustration major. XIII is a freelance creator who has worked in the area for several years and hopes to expand her creative reach across a variety of realms. “My hope for this illustration was to capture the cool energy and magic that John Coltrane’s work embodies. His music manages to inspire a unique kind of excitement while also being relaxing and modest. I wanted to depict him in the colors of the tones that I hear: deep violets, magenta, and gold. Hanging stars are used to represent the enchanting nature of songs like ‘Blue Train’ & ‘In A Sentimental Mood,’” shares XIII. Previous COLTRANE Celebration posters have featured the work of artists Monet Alyssa, Phillip Burke, Stacey Robinson, Edreys Wajed, and Julia Bottoms. Limited edition prints will be available for purchase in the Burchfield Penney Art Center Museum Store. morning of Sept. 6, two Sudanese teens - Dhal Apet, 17, and Lueth Mo, 15 - were shot and killed by a White Onondaga County sheriff’s deputy responding to a call of suspicious activity at a parking lot in neighboring DeWitt, N.Y The Onondaga County sheriff, Tobias Shelley, has justified the shooting, saying that Deputy, 34-year-old John Rosello, had acted in selfdefense after the car drove toward him. However, New York’s attorney general has released a video of the upstate deputy firing into a fleeing car and killing the two teens, raising questions about whether the officer needed to use deadly force to avoid being run over. Rosello did not activate his body camera before the confrontation. But video shot by a surveillance camera across the street recorded the incident. The video released by the attorney general doesn't appear to show the deputy, who is White, trapped or unable to get away as he claimed. Nor was he struck by the vehicle. “These two teenagers should still be alive," New York Civil Liberties Union As-

sistant field director Deka Dancil said. “It is clear from the footage that the officer needlessly escalated to fatal force, and did so with a rapidity that is too readily deployed against young Black New Yorkers.”

The Congressional Black Caucus: Is The Peace In Ukraine Now! We Are All Affected!!! “Conscience of the Congress” Unconscious? VOICES

Dear Editor: What: PEACE IN UKRAINE!! gathering as part of the Global Days of Action by the Peace In Ukraine Coalition, calling for: an immediate ceasefire; peace negotiations; and no more weapons from US. When & Where: Saturday, Oct. 7, at Noon to 1p.m.; Bidwell & Elmwood, Buffalo NY 14222. Who: Organized by the WNY Peace Center (WNYPC), and hosted by Women In Black WNY. All are welcome. The WNYPC has been working for peace and against militarism since its inception as part of Rev. Dr. King's Clergy & Laity Concerned in 1967 (one of the first 12 such chapters!). It pursues its mission of "Peace through Justice at home and abroad" through a wide range of activities. Women In Black is an international movement started in Israel and Palestine in the 1980s by Jewish and Palestinian women who were protesting the violence and vigilling for nonviolence and peace in their region. It has spread worldwide, and the WNY Chapter was started during the run-up to the war on Iraq (2001/2) and its hour-long Noon Saturday vigil at Bidwell & Elmwood has occurred weekly ever since. WHY: The war in Ukraine has caused: •A greatly increased danger of Nuclear War and annihilation, bringing the Doomsday Clock to 90 seconds to midnight; •A worldwide grain shortage, and associated shortages •Environmental catastrophe from the military activity (forest fires; bombed gas lines [by the US]; bombed out buildings, towns, and infrastructure; massive greenhouse gas emissions •Huge opportunity cost of the $75 Billion spent by the US, in addition to the human effort and monies squandered on this devastation by all sides. It is way past time for #diplomacy and #negotiations for a #ceasefire, and an end to fueling the fire through massive provision of more arms. #PeaceNow #InternationalOrganizations #UN #PeaceInUkraine

he Congressional Black Caucus has strayed far from the politics of its original members. Once called the "conscience of the congress," the group is made up of Democratic Party loyalists living off of a now undeserved reputation. “Even though we think first of those we were directly elected to serve, we cannot, in good conscience, think only of them—for what affects one Black community, one poor community, one urban community, affects all…,” Letter from Congressional Black Caucus to President Nixon in 1971. In the 1960s, Rep. Charles Diggs (D-Mich.) established the Democracy Select Committee (DSC) to bring the nine elected African American House members together. They were organized in order to help them strategize around their common issues and develop policy initiatives that would address the problems facing their African American constituents. “The sooner we get organized for group action, the more effective we can become,” Diggs said. The operative words in Diggs’ statement are “group”, “action” and “effective”. Is the current iteration of the CBC as a group taking effective action? By the beginning of the 92nd Congress, (1971-1973) the number of African American Representatives had risen from nine to 13. Rep. Louis Stokes (D-Ohio) said, “In addition to representing our individual districts, we had to assume the onerous burden of acting as congressman-atlarge for unrepresented people around America.” Those 13 African American members founded The Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) in 1971. It was from that above referenced 1971 letter to Nixon that the CBC became known as The Conscience of the Congress . Ossie Davis was the keynote speaker at the first CBC fundraising dinner in 1971. The title of his address was, It’s Not The Man, It’s The Plan. In this address he challenged the members of the CBC by stating, “…the time has…come when rhetoric will begin to take a back seat…Give to us a “Ten Black Commandments,” simple and strong…” He closed by saying, “Let us stop making history by ad hoc methods and impromptu improvisations. Let us plan the whole thing out…” He directed the CBC members to give people their assignments and hold them strictly -WNY Peace Center responsible if they don’t carry them out. Now is the time for the African American community to take stock, not of the original 13 wnypeace.org members of the CBC, but of the current 58. Are they in fact addressing the problems facing the African American community? Are they taking effective “group-action”? Has the “conscience of the Congress” become unconscious? Have they devolved into a comprador class of relatively privileged, wealthy and educated natives of a colonized land that have been "bought" by the colonizers? More simply put by the late Glen Ford, have they become “the Black Misleadership Class”? cation in prison thanks to those brave men who understood According to the CBC website, “…the Congressional Black the value of education to Mr. Robinson’s family and comCaucus (CBC) has been committed to using the full Constimunity. The Governor refused to negotiate said in his address, “…the name of the game is power-and if with the prisoners. Encouraged by the president, Richard M. you ain’t playing power, you’re in the wrong place.” Is the Nixon, Rockefeller and Oswald agreed that it would be best CBC using its power as a 58 - member potential voting bloc to send in law enforcement. REMEMBERING ATTICA, 1971 This is a title that I have used before as PRISONERS ARE PEOPLE TOO, INC. has taken time every year to remember a prison rebellion, an uprising …. not a riot…. that took place at Attica State Prison from September 9 through September 13 in 1971. I have later used the term MASSACRE to describe what happened when government took control on the final day and law enforcement’s gunfire resulted in the deaths of 43…33 prisoners and 10 corrections officers and other civilians. I prefer to use the words “rebellion” and “uprising” as this describes what happened when prisoners put forth a determined effort to stand up and speak out against inhumane living conditions, i.e. overcrowding, poor food, substandard medical care, little opportunity for education or rehabilitation and violation of their civil rights, protected by the U.S. Constitution. These men knew they were being denied certain basic rights, including the right to free speech, the freedom to practice their religion, and the right to access the courts and counsel. We have remembered Attica in the past, celebrating the men who shouted, “We are MEN! We are not beasts and will not be treated as such!” Our programs have screened documentary films about Attica Prison, some old (ATTICA, 1974) and some newer projects (ATTICA, 2004). We have hosted individuals who are the children of those brave men, Lion Blyden, son of Herbert X Blyden, one of the recognized leaders of the rebellion, and Chiquita Archie, daughter of Thomas Robinson who was privileged to further his edu-

On Second Thought . . .

What a Difference a Week Makes!

I

n a 38 – 10 dismantling of the Las Vegas Raiders, the Buffalo Bills again returned to at least a semblance of themselves from last season, let alone, the disaster of last week. The Bills and Josh Allen, in particular, have shown cause for alarm, as to the future state of affairs this current season. Last week, the Monday Night Football world witnessed a classic display of the ‘good’ Josh Allen’ and his nightmare twin, the ‘bad’ Josh Allen.’ The ‘Bad Josh’ had been rarely seen since the early days of his career in Buffalo. It was then, that we first saw the impressive physical displays, including the strong arm, the great escapability in the pocket and the reckless abandon running style. But too often, the ‘Bad Josh’ would take over where he’d start to play so-called “hero ball,” whereby he over relied on his considerable physical talent, but not enough on his brain. However, steadily over the last three plus seasons now, we’ve seen his maturation process, whereby he became more of a student of the game; better able to dissect complex NFL defenses, but still able to rely upon his great physical gifts. It has been this maturation which propelled Allen to the top rank of NFL quarterbacks. Against the Jets, however, we witnessed an unwelcome incarnation of the ‘Bad Josh’ – he of the reckless “Hero Ball” mentality that helped his opponent with bonehead interceptions and careless play. The four giveaways against the Jets was the work of a rank amateur, who we all hoped, had gone away for good. Indeed, it was very reassuring to see the return of ‘Good Josh,’ as the Bills – after a slow start – began their systematic dismantlement of the Raiders. Once again, the maturation that we thought we saw in Allen’s evolution to becoming a superstar QB was on full display. Frankly, I was not surprised by the turnabout. In my book, Allen is easily a Top Five QB and a rare talent by any standard, in any era. That’s because Allen is a hard worker and still growing as a student of the game. The element of his game that still needs work is all between the ears. And that is something, I am convinced, he will figure out. Right now, for starters, he needs to figure out how to do the ‘electric’ turf slide. Allen seems temperamentally unsuited to safely sliding away from oncoming defenders. For some reason, he feels he has to leap, hurdle and deliver a blow on every improvised running play. But the man really needs to learn a ‘cool’ slide that will prevent angry defenders with bad intentions from taking his head off. Make no mistake about it, Josh Allen is the one indispensable component of Buffalo Bills football team. As long as he remains upright and playing like ‘Good Josh,’ the Bills have as good a shot as any team to walk the Super Bowl walk. Of course, Allen was not the only Bill who did work. In addition to the usual suspects, like Stefon Diggs, Gabe Davis and Dawson Knox, the Bills also got big contributions from James Cook, Damien Harris and Dalton Kincaid. Unlike the Jets game, those contributions made the Bills two-dimensional in both the run and pass game. Certainly, it was too much for Las Vegas to handle. Not to be left out, was the Bills defense, which also stood out, especially the play of all-pro LB Matt Milano. Milano made a highlight reel interception of an outlet pass intended for Josh Jacobs, the Raiders vaunted RB. On the play, Milano just jumped over the man’s back and simply “Bogarted” the football away. In the end, Milano and the rest of the Bills interior defenders put a skirt and high heel cleats on the normally hard running Jacobs, who was held to the lowest rushing output of his career. Next up for the Bills, are the tough, up and coming Washington Commanders. They are a hardnosed team with a defensive line that is first rate. The Commanders are still trying to make their bones in the ultra-competitive NFC East, which features the Eagles and Cowboys. While they have the defense to play with the big boys, the question for them is whether they can hang enough points on the scoreboard with their second year

Bills Demolish Raiders 38 - 10

A

t the start of Sunday’s game against the Raiders, the Bills defense came out slow and Raiders running game exploded for a long run-down field setting up a Raiders TD. The turnover on downs at the goal line was head shaking because of Offensive Coordinator Ken Dorsey not calling for power football in that situation. The Raiders continued to turn the ball over and the Bills made them pay with TD passes to Dawson Knox and Gabe Davis respectively. Josh Allen took what the defense gave him and he finally threw the ball away on a few plays instead of chancing an interception. That’s smart football and Allen James Cook averaging 7.2 yards per carry bode well for the Bills running game. The Bills had 35 rushes for 183 yards with an average 5.2 yards per carry - a recipe for winning football. The Bills are unbeatable when Josh Allen does not turn over the football. The Bills defensive front was outstanding with Ed Oliver and DaQuan Jones dominating (former Bill) Raiders guard Greg Van Roten and their Center Andre James. The Bills edge rushes Leonard Floyd and Greg Rousseau picked up where they left off from last week with steady play on the outside. Rousseau especially seemed to be improving each week and his confidence level was sky high even after not making the play on the Raiders opening drive. Rousseau had two tackles and one assist along with forcing runs back into the middle of The Bills defensive line. The Bills new starting middle linebacker Terrel Bernard looked much more comfortable and his fluid moves to the runners were good. After Bernard’s interception of a tipped pass his confidence and play increased. Bernard said: “Greg Rousseau made a great play tipping the ball and play was going to my man in coverage and I was able to make the interception. The crowd noise made a huge difference, and I look forward to going out and making plays.” It’s a long season and Terrel Bernard is a work in progress, but if this unit can stay healthy through Thanksgiving and Von Miller returns this unit it could easily become a dominating defensive unit during the stretch drive and into the playoffs. Micah Hyde aggravated his hamstring and had to leave the game. This looks like another season of nagging injuries for Hyde. I think Damar Hamlin might see his first week of regular season action against the Washington Commanders. The Bills must address the safety position in next year’s draft or bring in another quality player via free agency. This year’s free agent Safety Taylor Rapp had a very good game and will probably start in next week’s game. That’s when The Bills travel to Washington DC and face a furious defensive front with Montez Sweat, Chase Young, and Jonathan Allen. They are undefeated with wide out Terry McLaurin, and running back Brian Robinson Jr. will be a big challenge for this Buffalo Bills defensive unit. I see Bills offense - as long as Allen continues to take what the defense gives him - exploit the Commanders secondary on short to midrange passes to tight ends which will open up the field for Diggs and Davis. Bills will win in a highly contested game 27-21.

BILLS continued QB, Sam Howell. That is where the Bills defense has to step in from the jump and not give the young QB any hope at all. For the Bills, the lingering question this season – until it isn’t – is which Josh Allen we will get? Will it be the ‘Good Josh’ or the ‘Bad Josh?’
