Federal Lawsuit Filed Against Buffalo Police Department A federal lawsuit has been filed against the Buffalo Police Department charging racial discrimination. Black Lives Matter-Buffalo and a coalition of area residents are asking the state attorney general to investigate the department for a “repeated, persistent and widespread pattern of unconstitutional policing” that targets people of color.” For roughly a decade now the Buffalo Police Department has enforced a Zero Tolerance, Broken Windows policy according to researchers from the University at Buffalo and Cornell law schools. "What this policy represents is kind of a blanket unconstitutional designation of suspicion based on race," co-author of the study UB professor Anjana Malhotra said. According to the study, since 2006 police have systematically conducted search and seizures in minority neighborhoods, intensifying the policy in 2012. In that time, activists said it’s become significantly more likely a person arrested is Black or Latino and less likely that person is White. Malhotra said their data “establishes clear racial disparities adversely impacting African Americans and Latinos – and sharp increases in these disparities as Buffalo has moved further towards its most recent urban renewal program." A Spokesperson for the Buffalo Police and Mayor Brown deny the allegations. The Attorney General's Office is already investigating the deaths of two young men of color while under Buffalo police custody. On the steps of City Hall last week, advocates called for a comprehensive AG investigation of the department's activity based on the study.

Community Set to Celebrate the Completion of The Freedom Wall! Celebrate the completion of The Freedom Wall with talented artists John Baker, Julia Bottoms Douglas, Chuck Tingley, and Edreys Wajed and the community on Sunday, September 17 from 2-6 p.m. rain or shine. The event takes place on Michigan Avenue between East Ferry and Main Streets. Enjoy a free cookout in partnership with Buffalo United Front and performances by Drea d'Nur, the African American Cultural Center, the Performing Arts High School Choir, and DJ Reazon. Today, if you stand at the corner of Michigan Avenue and East Ferry Street in Buffalo, you will find yourself standing at a critical cultural crossroads of our region, but you might not recognize it as such. This corner is the northern entrance into the Historic Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor. You will see Bethel AME, Buffalo’s oldest Black religious institution, organized in 1831 and a critical station on the Underground Railroad. You might even notice that the intersection announces in small signs the junction of the honorary intersection of Richard Allen Way and Harriet Tubman Way. At the corner of this same intersection is a large concrete wall, nearly eleven feet tall and 300 feet long, surrounding the property of the NFTA Cold Spring Bus Maintenance Depot. The NFTA approved this location in collaboration with the Albright Knox Public Art Initiative as the ideal space for the “Freedom Wall” project. “My hope is that the wall establishes a space that is visible in a way that is hard to ignore with impactful imagery that sparks dialogue about the things that matter in our community, not just about the importance and history of our civil rights leaders, but as a catalyst to talk about other issues that confront communities of color in general and citizens of the East Side in particular” stated Albright Knox Public Art Curator Aaron Ott. The leaders are depicted on the wall were chosen by conducting interviews and public meetings in collaboration with members of our community, consulting with faith-based organizations, through conversations with local and national historians, partnering with local stakeholders and agencies, and through research conducted in conjunction with curriculum responding to this project developed at SUNY Buffalo State.
A
Permanent Memorial honoring the victims of enslavement was unveiled on March 25, 2015, marking the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. The memorial, located on the United Nations Visitors Plaza in New York City, invites people everywhere to contemplate the legacy of the slave trade and to fight against racism and prejudice today. Visitors can pass through The Ark of Return to intimately experience three primary elements. The first element, Acknowledge the Tragedy, is a three-dimensional map that depicts the global scale of the triangular slave trade. The second element, Consider the Legacy, is a full scale human figure lying in front of a wall inscribed with images of the interior of a slave ship. This element illustrates the extreme conditions under which millions of African people were transported during the Middle Passage. The third element, Lest We Forget, is a triangular reflecting pool where visitors can honour the memory of the millions of souls who were lost. In 2007, the United Nations General Assembly agreed to establish a Permanent Memorial in the grounds of the United Nations in New York City to honour the Victims of Slavery and the TransAtlantic Slave Trade. In 2011, together with UNESCO the Permanent Memorial Committee launched a Continued Page 11

NATIONAL + WORLD + LOCAL Obama Assails President Trump’s Reversal of DACA
Opposition supporters praise court's ruling.
In Historic Ruling, Kenyan Court Voids President’s Re-Election: Orders New Vote NAIROBI, Kenya — In a historic ruling and a first in Africa, Kenya’s Supreme Court nullified on Friday the re-election of a sitting president, ordering a new vote to be held within 60 days after finding that the outcome last month had been tainted by irregularities. A new election was ordered to be held October 17. It was a stunning moment for Kenya, one of Africa’s most populous nations, and for democracy in general. Kenya’s disputed presidential election in 2007 set off bloodshed that left at least 1,300 people dead and 600,000 displaced around the country. But this time, figures across the Kenyan political landscape, including the president whose victory was wiped away, appeared to accept the decision and called on supporters to do the same. Both the opposition leader Raila Odinga and President Uhuru Kenyatta called for calm. The ruling also offered a potent display of judicial independence on a continent where courts often come under intense pressure from political leaders, analysts said. “It’s a historic moment showing the fortitude and courage of the Kenyan judiciary,” said Dickson Omondi, a country director for the National Democratic Institute, a nonpartisan organization that supports democratic institutions and practices worldwide. He said it was the first example in Africa in which a court nullified the re-election of an incumbent. The election on Aug. 8 was conducted peacefully and was largely praised by international observers. But David Maraga, the court’s chief justice, declared the result “invalid, null and void” after siding with the opposition, which had argued that the vote had been electronically manipulated to assure a victory for President Uhuru Kenyatta. Mr. Kenyatta, 55, had been re-elected with 54 percent of the vote, easily surpassing the 50 percent threshold needed to avoid a runoff. His main challenger, Raila Odinga, 72, who petitioned the Supreme Court to nullify the election, had received about 44 percent, a difference of about 1.4 million votes. A parallel tally by domestic observers endorsed the official result. The Supreme Court decision came as a surprise, even to Mr. Odinga and his supporters, who had complained about election irregularities. A top election official in charge of voting technology was killed about a week before the election, and although the casting of ballots went smoothly, the electronic transmission of vote tallies was flawed. -.NYT
For the first time since leaving the White House in January, former President Barack Obama has issued a full statement in response to an action by President Trump. On Tuesday, Sept. 5, in response to Trump’s reversal of the “Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals” (DACA), Obama issued a lengthy Facebook message. Obama expressed deep disappointment in the overturn of his June 15, 2012 executive order, which was intended to protect young adults brought illegally to the U. S. as children. Trump, calling the executive order illegal, reversed it and asked Congress to act on it with legislation, throwing the lives of more than 800,000 people into limbo. Trump claims to have “great love” for the youth who have become known as “dreamers”. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, making the announcement, said, “We are a people of compassion and we are a people of law. But there is nothing compassionate about the failure to enforce immigration laws.” Obama called it a “cruel” action. He posted the following response in part: Immigration can be a controversial topic. We all want safe, secure borders and a dynamic economy, and people of goodwill can have legitimate disagreements about how to fix our immigration system so that everybody plays by the rules. But that’s not what the action that the White House took ... is about. This is about young people who grew up in America — kids who study in our schools, young adults who are starting careers, patriots who pledge allegiance to our flag. These Dreamers are Americans in their hearts, in their minds, in every single way but one: on paper. They were brought to this country by their parents, sometimes even as infants. They may not know a country besides ours. They may not even know a language besides English. They often have no idea they’re undocumented until they apply for a job, or college, or a driver’s license. Over the years, politicians of both parties have worked together to write legislation that would have told these young people – our young people – that if your parents brought you here as a child, if you’ve been here a certain number of years, and if you’re willing to go to college or serve in our Continued Page 11

Iraqi-American Family Racially Profilled; Detained by Police for Police for No Reason
The Root -- An Iraqi-American family is outraged after three members were detained by police, all because they were attempting to deposit a large check that was acquired through the sale of their home. Something that should have been simple as A, B, C turned into two adults and a teenage girl being held at a police station for three hours. And because of that, Sattar Ali is wondering if he made the right decision to move his family back to Wichita, Kan., claiming that the experience was a result of racial profiling. Sattar Ali family. According to KAKE, the Ali family had recently sold their home in Dearborn, Mich., so that they could move back to Wichita, where Ali has plans to finish out his doctoral degree in mechanical engineering at Wichita State. “I went to the bank to deposit the check and I took all of the documents with me to verify,” Ali explained to the news station. The check totaled just over $151,000, and literally all Ali wanted to do was put it in Emprise Bank for safekeeping until he found a house for his family But even despite his affable approach to the situation, Ali soon found himself in handcuffs. “I was talking to them for less than five minutes and I found the police behind me, handcuffed me, confiscated everything and took me outside,” he explained. Ali said more than 15 police cars showed up for his arrest. To make matters worse, two other members of Ali’s family—his wife, Hadil, and their 15-yearold daughter Hawra, who were not even in the bank at the time of the incident, but waiting in the car outside—were also taken into custody for reasons beyond comprehension. The police even took it upon themselves to call the private school that Ali’s 11-year-old son attends and tell the school to hold the child because the family was in police custody. When all was said and done, the family was in custody for almost three hours, bewildered as to what was going on.“They didn’t read me rights or anything.,” he said. Ali now believes that he was racially profiled and called out Wichita for the actions taken against him and his family.“They jumped to conclusions,” Ali told the Sunflower, because the check was “presented by someone named Sattar Ali, not James or Robert.” The outraged father said he plans to take legal action in response to the arrests.

Weight Loss Tips... 1. Cut down on carbs You don’t have to cut out carbs, but cutting down on carbohydrates will definitely help you drop pounds faster. The main thing a low carb diet will do will help you to curb your cravings. You will find that the longer you go without sweet treats the less you will crave them. 2. Eat foods that are high in fiber Foods that are high in fiber will help you stay full longer. Fruits and vegetables are great choices because they are mostly fat free and low in calories. 3. When you are hungry reach for protein High protein foods help to keep you full while keeping your blood sugar levels even. When your blood sugar goes up and down, your mood will be erratic and you will end up overeating because your glucose levels are all over the place. 4. Walk 30 minutes at least 3 times a week There is no disputing that diet and exercise go hand in hand. The exercise will help you burn off excess weight faster plus you will feel better each time you set out on your walk. This is one area that will improve to the point that you will look forward to getting more active movement. The results will show up within a few weeks as well and that will motivate you because your plan is actually working. 5. Drink plenty of water a day Drinking water on a regular basis is good for your body and when you drink a glass of water before you eat you may find that you are full quicker and end up eating less. Drinking water also helps you to flush toxins out of your body and it will prevent you from becoming constipated, which could slow your weight loss. 6. Keep a food journal This is the key to successful weight loss. Keep track of everything you eat. The more honest you are with writing down your food intake, the more weight you will lose. Y 7. The Five "A's": A Back to School Messsage to Parents
A
By Benjamin Willis s the new school year rolls around I wanted to take the time to reflect on my childhood and thank my momz (the z is intentional-it's in my phone like that-lol).
As a child I can always remember her stressing the importance of school. Constantly speaking of the importance of having a good education, telling me I could do it. Waking me up in the morning (I'm still not a morning person-hence penning this at 2:50 am). All the trials and tribulations we go through as parents is no comparison to the joy that our children bring us and it comes with the territory of having kids. I hope that I have become someone that she is proud to say she had and more importantly proud to say she raised. I have been fortunate enough to have a strong village that also reinforced the importance of education. Shout out to all those who did, from my grandparents to competing with my cousins to see whose report card was better and to all my aunts and uncles in between. Thank you. Sometimes we think we need to be perfect as parents which is ironic because there are no perfect people therefore no perfect parents, but guess what? You are the perfect parent for your child just like my parents were for me when I was growing up. However if i can offer any advice, I would just say reinforce the value of education. Work hard to do your best in getting them to school on time and more than anything else, when they are wrong do not support them! As an administrator, that is often the most frustrating part of building a relationship with parents, the “my child can do no wrong” syndrome. “Not my child”----yessss your child! There are no perfect children, just as there are not any perfect parents but I say this: Raise your child to have manners, common courtesy and a hard work ethic and they will get farther and achieve more than most. I will leave you with this….I have had the pleasure of being in the midst of great people. One of them was Howard Lewis who directed the Office of University Preparatory Programs in Diefendorf Annex on UB’s south campus. I was an Upward Bound student in high school and later did my work-study in the America Reads program. In a moment of weakness and struggle I expressed to him that I was going to drop out of college, stating it wasn’t for me and Id rather work. He leaned back, then leaned forward and said to me very calmly (although I could see he was upset). He simply stated that it would be a mistake, and that I needed to finish what I started. He then said if I was struggling to find success, to focus on the five A’s. I have made it a point to share it with students and parents and families whenever I can. I even have it on my door at work as a constant reminder! Mentors are everywhere. When I look over my life I see wisdom guiding me through so many doors and around so many mistakes. I hope to do the same for those in my path. So here it is parents the five A’s as told to me by Howard Lewis: 1)Be in ATTENDANCE…..number one factor for success in school. Limit absences and tardiness and your child will be more successful guaranteed. The 480 minutes they can miss in a day of instruction can never be made up or accounted for. 2)Pay ATTENTION: when you get there…take notes, be actively engaged, study for tests, do your homework…all part of being a participant in your education not just a part of the roster. 3)Have a positive ATTITUDE about school. If you’re speaking negative about school or a teacher or a principal your child will internalize that and it may hinder their success/potential. Make sure they think positively about school and understand the benefits of having a good education. 4)Find and develop your ASPIRATION…what do they want to be? Who do they want to be, what do they want to become. Usually kids say a famous entertainer or pro athlete. As a counselor I always wanted kids to think beyond their pro career or their hit album. Never crushing dreams but having a practical plan B, which is often plan A, if the dream isn’t manifested. 5)Last but not least is ACHIEVEMENT…hard work ethic to achieve the plan, the goal, and the aspiration. No thing can replace hard work and putting the time in, no matter what it is we choose to do! When we experience authentic achievement (intrinsically) there isn’t a better feeling in the world! God Bless good people hope this was helpful! Ode (owed) to Howard Lewis!!! Stay tuned for more mentor knowledge and wisdom in this column and the forthcoming Book from Angels and Dreams Publishing entitled: Straight FAITH no f.e.a.r. I can be contacted by phone at 716-3823000, by email at benjamin0824@icloud.com. The I Ching: SHIH HO / BITING THROUGH The I Ching teaches us to forgive but not to forget...It means that weare wise to pay conscientious attention to the waxing and waning of truth in ourself and others. When truth predominates, we can progress. Whenit is eclipsed, we are obligated to withdraw and surrender the matter to the Sage.

THEY DID IT…AND WE SALUTE THEM!
E
very year in September we do something special to remember the September 13th uprising at Attica State Prison in 1971. We have hosted guest speakers, some who were at Attica in 1971; screened films, including some documentaries; and hosted panel discussions. One year, we walked from Buffalo to Attica, educating people along the way, and ending with a prayer vigil for those who died as a result of NY State –sponsored violence. This year, along with other prisoner justice organizations and campaigns, we endorsed the Alliance of Families for Justice’s “March for Justice,” from Harlem to Albany, which started on August 26 with an ending planned for a rally to be held on September 13 in Albany’s West Capitol Park. PRISONERS ARE PEOPLE TOO, INC. is planning to live stream the rally via SKYPE at the Rafi Greene Center, 1423 Fillmore @ Glenwood at 4:30pm. The rally starts at 5:00pm. We salute the brave men, prisoners at Attica in 1971 who stood up for their humanity against overcrowding, racism, and brutality. We salute the citizens who just marched 180 miles from Harlem to Albany to call attention to the need for prison reform and the urgent need to close Attica. We salute Soffiyah Elijah and her team, The Alliance of Families for Justice, which is dedicated to ending abuses behind the walls of New York State prisons and helping families of prisoners on the other side. Join BaBa Eng, PRP2’s Program Director, TOMORROW, Wednesday, September 13 at the Rafi Greene Center at 4:30 for the Albany rally at 5:00. (Karima- 716-834-8438; BaBa – 716-491-5319.)
OBAMA RESPONDS continued military, then you’ll get a chance to stay and earn your citizenship. And for years while I was President, I asked Congress to send me such a bill. That bill never came. And because it made no sense to expel talented, driven, patriotic young people from the only country they know solely because of the actions of their parents, my administration acted to lift the shadow of deportation from these young people, so that they could continue to contribute to our communities and our country. We did so based on the wellestablished legal principle of prosecutorial discretion, deployed by Democratic and Republican presidents alike, because our immigration enforcement agencies have limited resources, and it makes sense to focus those resources on those who come illegally to this country to do us harm. Deportations of criminals went up. Some 800,000 young people stepped forward, met rigorous requirements, and went through background checks. And America grew stronger as a result. But today, that shadow has been cast over some of our best and brightest young people once again. To target these young people is wrong — because they have done nothing wrong. It is self-defeating — because they want to start new businesses, staff our labs, serve in our military, and otherwise contribute to the country we love. And it is cruel. What if our kid’s science teacher, or our friendly neighbor turns out to be a Dreamer? Where are we supposed to send her? To a country she doesn’t know or remember, with a language she may not even speak? Let’s be clear: the action taken today isn’t required legally. It’s a political decision, and a moral question. Whatever concerns or complaints Americans may have about immigration in general, we shouldn’t threaten the future of this group of young people who are here through no fault of their own, who pose no threat, who are not taking away anything from the rest of us. ...It is precisely because this action is contrary to our spirit, and to common sense, that business leaders, faith leaders, economists, and Americans of all political stripes called on the administration not to do what it did today. And now that the White House has shifted its responsibility for these young people to Congress, it’s up to Members of Congress to protect these young people and our future

Bills Defeats Jets 21-10; Start Preparing for Carolina Panthers
T
he Bills running game picked up where they left off from last season. It was like watching wet paint dry. I hope you had something better to do during this snooze fest. The Bills must start to roll Tyrod Taylor out of the pocket. Tyrod’s one yard TD pass to Charles Clay finally put the Bills on the scoreboard. The Bills dominated in most statistical categories but only up by seven. The Bills McCoy ran for 110 yards on 22 carries, while the team overall had 190 yards total which was very impressive. Bills offensive line can run block but has serious problems with pass protection. Tyrod Taylor is most effective in a moving pocket and throws his best passes when he is moving his feet which is very unconventional. Tyrod is not a pocket passer and should be allowed to do what he does best. The Bills win over New York Jets 21-12 was one of the most boring opening day games I have ever seen in Buffalo. Thank goodness the Bills defense was up to the task and held an inferior team and QB Josh McCown to 38 rushing and GEORGE 187 passing yards respectively. It looks like a very long season in store for the Jets. RADNEY Bills linebacker Alonzo Alexander said: “We did very well, a good first start, our defensive held them to only 9 yards in the first half. I personally had some mental errors as well as the other guys but it’s always good to do that in a winning fashion. Our players must win the one on one matchups and study properly for next week in Carolina“Whoever plays the longest and hardest with the least mistakes will probably end up winning the game. This win means a lot for our young guys to build confidence and continue to win in order for later in the year to make a push to be where we want to be.” Bills starting middle linebacker Preston Brown said: “We had to go out there and play our fundamentals to take care of business. Everybody on defense was communicating and playing fast and getting to the ball because we all knew our play calls. Last year we did not play as fast because of the breakdowns in terminology. It’s going to interesting playing Carolina as they know (Sean McDermott’s) defense and challenges with their receivers, quarterback and running backs catching the ball out of the back field.” It’s going to be a good week of preparation, with them probably changing terminology for this week with several players on our team knowing their system.” Yes, I see a good chess match in Charlotte, NC for the upcoming NFL game between Buffalo Bills v Carolina Panthers. I see the Bills pulling an upset with our defense coming up with more take away than the Panthers defense. Prediction: Buffalo Bills winning 17-14 in a tightly hard fought game where both teams know each other’s tendencies very well.
