Rochester Sorority Launches Yellow Tea Rose Service Foundation
T
he Yellow Tea Rose Foundation, Inc. is a 501c3 tax exempt, non-profit organization that serves as the charitable arm of the Theta Omega Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. The Foundation, in collaboration with Theta Omega Sigma chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., provides programs and services to the most economically and educationally marginalized members of our community. Through action, education, and service, the foundation seeks to create an equitable Rochester by furthering Sigma Gamma Rho's motto, "Greater Service, Greater Progress." Bills Squish the Fish 35-0 in Old Fashion Beat Down
T
he Bills came out and jumped all over the Dolphins with a two-play 46-yard TD run by Devin Singletary and a Josh Allen to Stefan Diggs TD reception. It’s no accident that scoring is way down in the NFL compared to last season mainly due to live crowds are back in stadiums along with the offense can’t hear the defensive signal no longer. You can see that’s a major difference in the game. The Bills defense was the real story with Defensive Coordinator Leslie Frazier pitching a shutout with the right calls in order to stop The Dolphins offense. Everybody played well like rookie Greg Rousseau, who became the first Bills rookie since Ed Oliver to record a multi sack performance. Once Rousseau learns the proper techniques of an edge rusher, he could become the franchises next Bruce Smith. We have not been able to say that for over 30 years. The Bills second year defensive back Dane Jackson made a critical stop on a Dolphins fourth and two play by making a shoe string tackle one yard short of the first down. He was subbing for Levi Wallace, who left the game with cramps. Levi got his fifth career interception in the first quarter off Dolphins QB Jacoby Brissett. Everyone on the defensive unit had a good game including former top draft pick AJ Epenesa, who sacked and injured Dolphins fragile QB Tua Tagovailoa. Tua is a good QB, but his body was not made for the punishment given out in the NFL. The Bills offense is now starting to evolve into one where a running game is going to be the key to their future success. Bills offensive Coordinator Brian Dabool must continue to run the ball which will allow Josh Allen to move into play action passes which are more dangerous than the plays he’s been calling for the team. Bills running back Devin Singletary carried the ball only 13 times for 82 yards. Devin Singletary and Zack Moss should be getting the ball more often and how about giving the ball to Singletary at least 20 times Continued Page 12

Women For Walton Announce Rally To Protest False Campaign Ad Released By Brown Campaign The Women For Walton will hold a brief rally in Niagara Square this Friday, September 24 at 1 p.m. to protest the Brown campaign and the media for continuing to air a false political campaign ad on local TV, even after it has been verified by the media to be untrue. The ad claims that Ms.Walton plans to fire 100 police officers and that women and minorities will be the first fired if she becomes mayor. The truth is Ms. Walton has said repeatedly that she will not , nor has she any intention, of laying off a single Buffalo police officer if elected. The community is welcome to attend!

he Chairman of the Erie County Legislature, April N.M. Baskin, proudly stepped to the plate Monday and endorsed India Walton for Mayor of the City of Buffalo. Baskin, a respected and highly regarded lawmaker who represents the 2nd Legislative District, is the youngest Chair in history and the only first term Legislator appointed to this position of leadership. “We’ve heard a lot of talk this election season about experience,” Legislaor Baskin began. “They say what’s a candidates experience? Why didn’t she seek more of an entry level office position then work her way up? These were some of the questions that I faced when I ran for office just four years ago. No one knew who I was and many questioned my lack of a traditional path. Government, especially local government, is about about building relationships with your elected officials, partners and understanding the struggles and needs of the multitudes. Government, especially local government, needs to break down barriers and make resources acceptable for all. Solidarity Walk Saturday in Honor of Brother Neal Dobbins' Fight to Reduce Gun Violence

o keep our neighbors safe and unite our city, MVP (Most Valuable Parents) has planned a Solidarity Walk on Saturday, September 25, to honor the late Neal Dobbins (pictured), founder of the Most Valuable Parents of Buffalo and to raise the community’s awareness of two legislative amendments which are hindering efforts to reduce gun violence. The rally/march will start at E. Ferry and Fillmore at 2 p.m and is expected to arrive at the MLK, Jr. monument in MLK Park by 2:55p.m. There will be a few brief remarks from selected members of the community and elected officials. The march will end in prayer by 3:30 p.m. "We must come together and work together to provide services and support for the community at large." Vendors with resources and information for the community will be on site. “We want to provide solutions to the violence in our city!” said Mia-Ayers Goss, Executive Director of MVP. Le Mozart Noir: The Black Mozart Submitted By Henri Star Muhammad
B
orn into slavery on the Island of Guadeloupe in 1745, Joseph Boulogne excelled as a youth in his violin studies. When the slave owner took notice of his exceptional musical abilities he was relocated to Paris, France where he became a violin virtuoso, composer, champion fencer and athlete, and military battalion commander in the French Revolution. His music was said to have rivaled that of his contemporaries including Mozart, and he was often referred to as ‘Le Mozart Noir’ or ‘The Black Mozart.’ In an article published in 1990 in the Black Music Research Journal, Gabriel Banat points out that Mozart, who stayed briefly under the same roof as Boulogne may have “borrowed” music from Boulogne, citing remarkable similarities between an excerpt from a Boulogne violin concerto (Op. 7, No. 1) from 1777 and a passage from Mozart’s K. 364, a difficult sequence climbing to the highest register of the instrument, immediately followed by a dramatic dip — but had never appeared Continued Page 5

On My Mind
Simone Biles and the Importance of Self-Care
W
e recently witnessed an Olympics like no other. There were many thrilling moments like Alysson Felix’s remarkable two gold medal performances and Sydney McLaughlin breaking the world record in the women’s 400-meter hurdles. But the one that stands out to me, was seeing Simone Biles win the bronze medal on the balance beam. For the alltime greatest female gymnasts, this may even seem like she wasn’t at her best. But I beg to differ. What led up to this event is what makes this achievement remarkable. The previous week in her floor routine and vault event, Simone experienced what is described as the “twisties” which is a mental block when an athlete loses their spatial awareness during an intense routine, which could lead to serious injuries. As a result, she made the decision to pull out of competition. "I have to put my pride aside. I have to do what’s right for me and focus on my mental health and not jeopardize my health and well-being. That’s why I decided to take a step back,” Simone said. "It's OK sometimes to even sit out the big competitions to focus on yourself, because it shows how strong of a competitor and person that you really are, rather than just battle through it. Mind and our body, rather than just go out there and do what the world wants us to do." This is a profound statement that is a lesson for all of us. What Simone has said is that we need to make our mental health a priority and do what we need to do to take care of ourselves. Also, having someone who has such a high profile speak out on this topic helps to raise awareness and further the dialogue of what has become a front and center issue, especially as a result of COVID and all of its associated effects. What do you do to preserve your mental health? There are many tools that we can employ to improve our emotional wellbeing: exercise, meditation, utilizing our social supports - including family, friends and faith community, incorporating a healthy diet, listening to music, and getting proper sleep, among many more. These are all things that help to support us physically as well. Our minds and bodies are intrinsically connected. You cannot have good physical health without also having good mental health. Ultimately, Simone ended up re-entering the competition and securing the bronze medal thereby truly making her the G.O.A.T. not only because of her contribution to the sport of gymnastics, but also because of how she has shone a light on mental health. What I have discovered is that what Simone is saying is that we must take care of ourselves, otherwise we suffer. And while you (or I) are not an Olympic athlete as Biles said, we’re all human. And by acknowledging this, we can take the necessary steps to become the best version of who we can be.

he Ketogenic diet has grown in popularity in recent years as an effective weight loss method. Despite its popularity, the Ketogenic diet is not a safe or healthy way to lose weight. In fact, it can be quite dangerous to one’s overall health and wellness in the long run. What is the Ketogenic Diet? The Keto diet is a very low carb, high fat diet. You drastically reduce your carb intake and replace carbs with fat such as meat and poultry, fish, eggs, and nuts. The two most popular keto diets are the Standard ketogenic diet (SKD): •70% fat, 20% protein, 10% carbs And the high protein ketogenic diet: •60% fat, 35% protein, 5% carbs The Purpose of Keto The purpose of keto is to put your body into a metabolic state where it burns fat instead of carbohydrates. This is called ketosis and it occurs when the body uses ketone bodies that the liver produces from stored fat instead of carbohydrates. Ketosis can only occur by depriving your body of carbohydrates. This goal is to lose weight quickly and reduce cravings. Why You Should Never Try Keto Carbohydrates are not the enemy and not all carbs are created equal. Complex carbohydrates such as fruit, vegetables, whole grains, beans, and lentils are the preferred and most efficient energy source for the body. They are packed with vitamins, nutrients, antioxidants, and phytochemicals. The profound benefits of complex carbohydrates on the body are indispensable. Keto requires an almost complete elimination of complex carbs from your diet. It also promotes the consumption of high amounts of fat. Fat from beef, pork, bacon, and eggs, which greatly increase the risk of hypertension, high cholesterol and heart
disease are promoted with Keto. Ultimately, the Keto diet encourages individuals to do the two things one should avoid: consuming animals and animal by products and eliminate complex carbohydrates. The keto diet deprives the body of essential nutrients and to quote famed personal trainer Jillian Michaels when asked about keto, “why would anyone think this is a good idea”. A ketogenic diet has the following risks: •Nutrient deficiencies from not consuming a variety of complex carbohydrates (fruits and vegetables) •Liver problems •Kidney stones •Constipation •Mood swings •High cholesterol •Increased risk of heart disease The ketogenic diet is just another lose weight quick scheme and fad diet that will cause more harm than good in the long run. It is unsafe and unhealthy. Sure, you
may lose weight initially, but the ketogenic diet is not a lifestyle that can be maintained indefinitely. Intermittent Fasting, eating food as close to its natural state as possible with minimal ingredients, and eating a wide

The JRWI event at canalside this weekend will be free to the public, from 3pm to 7pm. Guests must register in order to participate. There will be free skate rental, games, and food trucks, along with a ceremony recognizing the participants of the skate clinic. Roller Skating has deep roots in the African American Community and has become a remerging theme for everyone at La’Movement Fitness. The popularity of roller skating has grown across the country, especially through the pandemic, but in the African American community it has always been more than just something trendy to do.

However, the hidden history is that we were always present as master performers, composers, and those who excelled to the top of this genre. The story of Le Chevalier de Saint Georges being born into slavery, yet rising to become a master of the violin and classical music is a story we hope to bring life in our performance of his music. Under the direction of musical director Christopher Weber, the Camerata di Sant Antonio Chamber Orchestra will present a program featuring the works of various black classical composers including William Grant Still, Samuel Coleridge Taylor, Florence Price, and others. his year’s artwork for the annual John Coltrane celebration, co-presented by the Burchfield Penney Art Center and Pappy Martin Legacy Jazz Collective, was designed by artist Julia Bottoms.
Releasing his first project titled #4Ant in early 2020 as an honorary project fully dedicated to his brother, the work was a strong introduction to Brother Tom Sos’s sound for many of his now dedicated listeners. The 4 – track EP not only displayed his witty wordplay, but also his artistic explorations through r&b, hip-hop, and gospel.
Dropping 2 more EPs during 2020 (Big Brother, Modus Vivendi) catapulted the rising artist into Buffalo’s limelight. In a matter of a year, the rapper has been featured on major regional platforms like Buffalo Rising, Music is Art Festival, and Creative Mornings, propagating his message of hope and strength through rap. "The influence that music carries…it has the power to make or break one’s life. And I feel like with my music- I want it to kind of come with the big brother effect,” mentioned Brother Tom Sos. Often referencing “the big brother effect,” Brother Tom Sos’s main goal with his music is to uplift his listeners while still relating to them. As someone who grew up in rougher parts of Buffalo, the rising lyricist wants to create a “space of motivation” for “Buffalo’s dreamers.” With plans to drop an EP each month starting next month, a clothing line in the works, and a single with well-known vocalists Lindsay Niccs and Jesse Ray Miller titled “Beyond” that dropped last week, Brother Tom Sos hopes to connect with young people through his music and honor his brother’s legacy. Discover the World of Afrofuturism at CEPA Gallery: Ascension of Black Stillness on View The Center for Exploratory & Perceptual Arts (CEPA) is excited to announce the opening of a new exhibition, Ascension of Black Stillness, in collaboration with guest curator and artist Stacey Robinson, The National Endowment for the Arts, and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.

Ascension of Black Stillness will be a multimedia exhibition with the common thread of Afrofuturism. “Afrofuturism, (a genre of multimedia practice that merges the arts and sciences through sciencefiction and fantasy) looks at speculating Black futures through examining past and present cultural phenomena," said Stacey Robinson, graphic design professor and guest curator of the ambitious show. “This exhibition consists of 10 multimedia artist’s collections that look at Afrofuturist philosophy through a multi-lens discipline. As an exhibition the works can tell a variety of stories that imagine parallel universes, alternate realities, and what-if scenarios that stem specifically through the idea of still photography and its alterations. With media consisting of holograms, motion graphics, animation, and print images the exhibition will highlight various conversations Black artists are having about the need for agency in actualizing our own liberated futures”, Robinson stated. The repurposing and reimagining of still images act as a recontextualization of oral and visual traditions that center Black agency through narrative storytelling. Exhibition catalogs are available for purchase. CEPA will be hosting various free programs for people of all ages to take a deeper dive into the work and explore the theory of Afrofuturism and how it intertwines with art. Hip-hop pioneer is in residence at UB, working with university students for the first time in his groundbreaking career.

randmaster Flash, one of the virtuoso creators of hip-hop and leader of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, the genre’s first act to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, will be in residence at the University at Buffalo this fall. He will direct the next Working Artists Lab as part of a full semester of hip-hop inspired programming presented by the university’s Arts Collaboratory. As hip-hop approaches its 50th birthday, the UB Arts Collaboratory is celebrating the birth of a movement that has left an indelible mark on music, dance, visual art, fashion, literature and film. The centerpiece of the AC’s latest Grandmaster Flash Working Artists Lab is the residency of hip-hop royalty Grandmaster Flash, the Bronx native universally recognized as one of the genre’s originators and innovators. “The residency at UB gives me a chance to tell hip-hop’s whole story. The sights. The sounds. The places and the moments,” says Grandmaster Flash. “It’s important that we get this history right. For the next generation to take music and art in new directions, they have to know where that music and art came from, who made it and how." Grandmaster Flash’s semester-long UB residency includes collaborations with UB and Buffalo State Students, area artists, DJs, musicians and dancers. Students will engage with one of the masters of hip-hop through a variety of classes, workshops and private sessions. s most of you know, I am supporting Kimberly Beaty for Erie County Sheriff and India Walton for Mayor of the City of Buffalo. Over the past several months, voters have asked me why I made a decision early on, to support these two candidates who were running without the endorsement of the Democratic Party. I, as a Black woman in politics, have not been endorsed by the Erie County Democratic Party almost as much as I have been endorsed. Being female is sometimes a difficult hurtle to overcome in this maledominated Erie County/ Buffalo political arena. Now add, as it is in Kimberly Beaty's and India Walton's cases, their ethnicity to the gender pool and you have candidates that, even though they both are as qualified as any of their opponents, certain persons are still going to see gender and skin color and then use that as an excuse not to vote for either one of them. India Walton may have an easier time due to the fact that the mayor she is trying to succeed is African American. But then, when there are nine Buffalo Common Councilmembers and none of them is a female, it may be that both India and Kimberly will have to work extra hard to ensure that voters look at their qualifications before they look at the humanity that houses those qualities. he Haiti Support Project (HSP) has condemned the brutal treatment and mass deportation of Haitian migrants who have gathered at the Texas border seeking refuge from the devastation of the recent earthquake, a series of hurricanes and tropical storms and a deepening political crisis following the mysterious assassination of President Jovenel Moise two months ago. Plagued for decades by grinding poverty, Haiti’s economy has virtually ground to a halt as a result of the natural disasters and chronic political instability. Kidnappings and turf wars between rival gangs have also terrorized the population. Taken together, these cruel living conditions have spurred yet another exodus from Haiti by people desperate for a safe place for their families only to be further brutalized by U.S. Border Patrol Agents. “We are absolutely outraged by the images of Haitians being herded and whipped like cattle” complained Dr. Ron Daniels, Founder of HSP. “In the minds of African Americans, it conjures up traumatic images of water hoses turned on Black children in Birmingham and horses trampling protesters on the Edmund Pettis Bridge. No human being should be brutalized like this. It must stop immediately.” HSP is demanding an immediate halt to the mass deportation of Haitians and the granting of Temporary Protective Status. The Haiti Support Group, founded by Dr. Ron Daniels, HSP is calling on Congressman Gregory Meeks, Chairman of the House Foreign Relations Committee, who has taken a particular interest in resolving the political crisis in Haiti, to mobilize the Congressional Black Caucus, Civil Rights and Human Rights leaders to support the demand for Temporary Protective Status and Humanitarian Assistance to Haiti. In the meanwhile, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley of Boston, Co-Chair of the House Haiti Caucus and Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez of New York are also appealing to the Biden Administration to immediately halt deportations and take urgent action to provide massive support to assist the Haitian people in the wake of the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that devastated Haiti last month. “The Biden Administration cannot claim it is doing everything it can to support the Haitian community while continuing to unjustly deport Haitians as the island weathers its worst political, public health and economic crises yet,” said Congresswoman Pressley. “We have a moral obligation to lead with compassion. That means immediately halting the cruel and callous deportations of our Haitian neighbors and leveraging every resource available to support those fleeing the humanitarian crisis on the island.”
“Seeking asylum by individuals who may be facing prosecution, imprisonment and even death because of political affiliation or membership in racial, national, sexual or religious groups is a recognized requirement under international law. We included coverage of the mayor’s race produced by other media outlets in our newsletter Sunday. Here’s a recap, starting with a sew story posted Monday morning in City and State NY by Justin Sondel, an occasional contributor to investigative Post, including this story that published last week. Justin’s piece for City and State, written for a statewide audience, recaps developments since the waning days of the Democratic primary in June and brings us forward to today. Of particular interest are comments from Larry Quinn, a developer who is supporting Mayor Byron Brown, and India Walton, who articulates her intentions for development if she’s elected. The Intercept has also posted a story written from a broad perspective on the mayor’s race. The story is based, in part, on reporting by Investigative Post and Rob Galbraith of the Buffalo-based Public Accountability Initiative. It’s a good read that covers a lot of ground and connects a lot of dots. A WGRZ story by Steve Brown took apart a Brown campaign commercial that claims India Walton’s plan to redirect a portion of funding presently earmarked for the police department would result in the layoff of 100 police officers. Good fact checking. And then there’s The Buffalo News. Rod Watson put Walton’s proposed 3 percent tax increase into context. Watson’s column appeared the day after a News editorial took Walton to task for her proposed tax increase. In that editorial, The News repeated Brown’s claim that the 3 percent increase in the tax rate would cost the owner of a house assessed at $100,000 an extra $300 a year. Wrong. The increase would come to $30. (The online version of the editorial had not been corrected as of this writing. That’s six days and counting.) This is the same editorial board that in June advocated the elimination of all minor parties from the ballot in New York state — voters should only have a choice between Republicans and Democrats — but then last week applauded Brown’s placement on the ballot as a minor party candidate thanks to the errant rulings by U.S. District Judge John Sinatra and State Supreme Court Justice Paul Wojtaszek. The paper’s logic: only 20 percent of voters turned out for the June primary. Left unsaid: Brown won his 2013 primary with an identical 20 percent turnout. And no, The News in 2013 did not call for the primary loser to get another crack at Brown in the November general election. Peace and Healing Circle a Success! On August 25 the Community Health Center of Buffalo, under the leadership of Dr. LaVonne Ansari, hosted a Peace and Healing Circle: Listening to the Voices of Our People. In attendance were staff from the Community Health Center as well as youth Baba from the "Y.O. New York Program" unENG der the leadership of Tracy Craig and Kali Williams. Karima Amin and I were co-keepers of the Circle and according to African tradition, Karima blessed the Circle with libation and a story about the importance of remembering who we are and where we came from. The entire atmosphere was designed to welcome our youth and community people and cause them to feel safe and welcomed. By God's Grace and the will of our Ancestors, we were able to listen to our young people along with the adults, as we talked about Violence, Drugs, Sex and Belonging. God willing, we will continue to hold these Circles at the Community Health Center here in Buffalo and will begin to hold them in Niagara Falls as well. We would like to thank everyone: Alnisa Banks of the Challenger and the Merriweather Family of the Buffalo Criterion for their support of our work along with everyone else involved in making this event a success. The three hour circle concluded with participants stating that they felt, "nourished," "energized," "peaceful," "at home," and "thankful." Cultural Center Board Responds to Accusations of Crisis
O
ver the past 64 years the African American Cultural Center (AACC) has been a beacon of hope, inspiration, and education for our community. Beginning with Malcolm Erni, through the passing of our beloved Agnes Bain last year, the center has been a gatekeeper for generations of our youth, developing their life skills and knowledge about the importance and impact of our culture in their development and success. Today the Board of Directors wants the community to know that its dedication and commitment to this mission is not in jeopardy considering the unfounded and unwarranted accusations that the AACC is in crisis. We are not in crisis and have been revaluating the Center’s needs and operations to strengthen and expand its programs, financial sustainability and develop a badly needed new building. In the past six months decisions have been made to finalize a strategic plan, seek additional funding, and improve administrative operations. Many of these decisions required re-evaluations of existing policies and staff especially at the managerial level. As a result, the Board has decided to conduct a search for a new Executive Director that has the vision and expertise in the performing and cultural arts to take the Center to a new level. While the search is taking place Jackie Mines will serve as the Interim Executive Director. Ms. Mines has served on the AACC Board and has extensive experience in managing community-based organizations. During the past year the void left by the passing of Agnes Bain coupled with the Covid 19 pandemic presented tremendous challenges for keeping the Center open. Although the transition has been difficult, we have come through these tough times this year with a successful, Pine Grill Reunion in August, reopening of the Paul Robeson Theater, and the restarting of our summer youth and afterschool programs. The drum and dance programs have been very active and key activities for this fall include Octoberfest, and the finalizing of the planning and development for the new cultural center. Because many of you will continue to have questions about the AACC’s status, we will provide more information and reports about our new plan of action and progress over the coming months. RADNEY/BILLS UPDATE continued a game. He had 6.3 yards per rush in Sunday’s game. I had people asking me all the time last season: “What’s wrong with Bills running game?” I always respond , “nothing is wrong it’s just that OC Brian Daboll refuses to run the ball more in games.” The Bills have run the ball very well just not enough, but it’s becoming quite clear that Josh Allen can’t carry a team like he did last season in those empty stadiums. He needs help with a consistent running game because in the 2021 NFL season Bills won’t make it to playoff on Allen’s arm alone. Free Registration Available for Boys on the Right Track Program at MLK Park in Buffalo Registration is open for Boys on the Right Track’s fall youth running programs, including its location at MLK Park in Buffalo. Thanks to a generous grant from the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Legacy Funds administered by the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, registration for this location is free for those in financial need, and open to boys ages 8-13. The program, running now through Wednesday, Nov. 10, meets from 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. It’s offered in collaboration with the Police Athletic League of Buffalo (https://buffalopal.com). The program will conclude with a 5K race on Sunday, Nov. 14 at the Outer Harbor in Buffalo.
