Ben Chambers

I hope you like the venue I have chosen. As I am sure you are experiencing, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is very impressive and the staff have been amazing. I am certain they will look after you all brilliantly.

Today’s venue continues our tour of Premier League stadiums, having staged the British Demolition Awards at the King Power in Leicester last year and Brighton’s Amex in 2021.

We once again co-host the demolition awards with the asbestos removal community, presenting the 2nd British Asbestos Awards, sponsored by Empire Asbestos. We have increased the number of award categories to an industry we support through Asbestos Hub Magazine.

I must thank our team of judges. For demolition, we have Richard Vann, Dr Terry Quarmby and Wayne Bagnall MBE. Wayne is also covering asbestos alongside Dr Yvonne Waterman and Craig Evans, COO of UKATA. All have gone through a record number of submissions diligently and they have come up with 13 deserved winners.

Thank you for supporting us

Here we go again. For the fifth time, we celebrate the industry with The British Demolition Awards, sponsored by Liugong – the best opportunity for the British demolition industry to get together, talk shop, socialise, do business, pick up an award and have a thoroughly good time.

The Demolition Hall of Fame continues here in London, honouring both former NFDC CEO Howard Button as our choice for Demolition Person and Dr Yvonne Waterman as Asbestos Industry Pioneer for the class of 2023.

Thank you for your support with Demolition Hub and Asbestos Hub this year and for continuing to help us in our goal of #championingdemolition and #asbestosawareness.

I hope you enjoy your evening and do come and say hello.

Demolition Hub’s story… so far

This month we enter our fourth year. Over this period Demolition Hub has flourished, establishing itself as the industry’s powerhouse magazine and demolition industry media brand.

We can proudly state that we are the only demolition media covering British demolition as frequently as bimonthly as well as being printed and circulated globally with an average of 100 pages each issue of quality industry content.

With more site visits, interviews and case studies than any other media, and with an unwavering commitment to promoting demolition, we truly have and will continue #championingdemolition.

Earlier this year Demolition Hub orchestrated a partnership with construction mental health charity Mates in Mind to create DEMOLISTEN, offering mental health support to the demolition industry and unsurprisingly this is our charity of choice for the 2023 awards.

In 2024 we are releasing a series of six Demolition Hub Specials in between the regular issues focusing solely on: Attachments, Alternative Powered Construction Equipment, Contractors, Excavators, Used and Hire Equipment and Waste and Recycling.

Last year we established an industry Hall of Fame to celebrate those individuals truly deserving of one all-encompassing accolade.

Four successful British Demolition Awards; here’s to making it five. We welcome you to join us…

Asbestos Hub’s story… so far

A bespoke solution created in June 2021 to fully serve the asbestos removal and remediation industries as our coverage was getting bigger and bigger within Demolition Hub, the asbestos abatement industry deserved its own independent magazine.

Received quarterly by almost all British asbestos removal contractors no matter what association they belong to, we have a growing reach of 3,000 industry professionals who receive Asbestos Hub in March, June, September and December each year.

For the past 15 months we have been partnered with leading asbestos training association UKATA, allowing us to showcase its dedication to improving the quality and standards of asbestos training, with its goal matching our own of protecting workers and the public from the risks associated with asbestos exposure.

The second annual British Asbestos Awards, celebrating those working with and alongside the asbestos industry, continues to be held alongside its demolition cousin as the synergy between the two industries allows plenty of crossover business opportunities and support.

We are supporting the Mavis Nye Foundation at the 2023 event, with a fitting tribute to its founder, Mavis Nye BEM, to all be revealed on the night.

Auction for the Mavis Nye Foundation

During the evening, a separate auction will take place to raise funds for the Mavis Nye Foundation. The Mavis Nye Foundation was created to inspire and give hope to victims of mesothelioma, an asbestos related terminal cancer.

How your kind donations will help:

• The Foundation’s primary aim is to reach out to as many potential donors as possible,

• Aiming to provide a hardship fund and support, and financial grants to aid newly diagnosed victims of mesothelioma in the UK,

• Provide short term travel expenses to reach treatment, when unable to claim these expenses elsewhere.

• To offer grants to smaller research labs to pursue the development of new drugs for mesothelioma research in the UK (which are now being advertised),

• To support university students studying to become mesothelioma doctors,

• To offer grants towards securing more CNS nurses in the UK.

Mike Shaft your MC for this evening

For the third successive year Mike Shaft will be the MC for our awards. Mike is an award-winning TV and radio broadcaster based in the north-west of England. He has broadcast for BBC Radio Manchester, Jazz FM, and many other independent radio outlets, presenting shows of all types, but he is particularly associated with soul music. On television, he was a host on BBC1’s Open

Air, has been a regular contributor to BBC Breakfast, presented ITV’s One World and had a cameo on Coronation Street interviewing Alec and Bet Gilroy at the Rovers Return.

As well as music, Mike has an interest in sport, having been lead basketball commentator for Sky TV, covered the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Canada and performed at the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

Mike is a practicing Christian and presents the Sunday morning breakfast show on BBC Radio Manchester. This won the 2017 Jerusalem Award for the Best Radio Strand.

Coinciding with this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week, Demolition Hub orchestrated a joint venture with construction mental health charity Mates in Mind to create the demolition-specific mental health fund, DEMOLISTEN

As the proud publisher of Demolition Hub Magazine I have got to know a lot of people in the industry, many of whom have been featured over the 18 issues. Many of you are now friends.

My team and I enjoy conducting site visits with ever more contractors, learning about and publicising their work all the while building and maintaining relationships.

We have been well supported and as we approach our fourth year and with our reach ever growing, it is time for us to put something back, in line with our #championingdemoliton mantra.

In light of the prevalence of mental health issues in the industry, the objective of DEMOLISTEN is to support those working in demolition.

We are not here to rip up the rule book and do things differently. We think Mates in Mind has got it spot on. Our role is simply to help them in targeting demolition.

All monies raised under the DEMOLISTEN banner go directly to Mates

in Mind. We want to use our demolition reach to get behind the only mental health charity specifically for the UK construction industry and to listen to those otherwise suffering in silence. Ultimately, this means saving lives.

So, I ask readers, contractors, OEMs, ISPs, associations and individuals to help make this a huge success for this industry. The dedicated website is www.demolisten.info and for now please register your interest with me by email (ben@globalnews.media) as we work around how you can support DEMOLISTEN.

We offer three recognised tiers for those wanting to support DEMOLISTEN on an ongoing basis:

• GOLD – £2,000 per year,

• SILVER – £1,000 per year,

• BRONZE – £500 per year. Mates in Mind will receive 100% of your donation.

The DEMOLISTEN banner allows us all to be able to see what the UK demolition industry has raised. Those choosing to donate on an annual basis will receive branding for email signatures, signage for vehicles and hoardings as well as being listed on the DEMOLISTEN website.

This just leaves me to thank Managing Director of Mates in Mind, Sarah Meek

for sharing Demolition Hub’s vision of a dedicated fund for the demolition industry.

Asbestos Removal Project of the Year

Sponsored by Asbestos Hub

Asbestos Hub magazine was born out of Demolition Hub magazine’s desire to expand and give due coverage to this important sector, closely related to demolition.

The debut issue in June 2021 was an enormous success with us sending a hard copy to all ACAD and NFDC members, companies signed up to our construction and construction equipment brand Diggers LIVE and many other partnerships we hold in the construction industry.

Asbestos Hub has a circulation of 4,000 confirmed sends each issue, published quarterly in March, June, September and December.

Asbestos Hub works in media association with the UK-based trade association UKATA, which supports the training of those working throughout the asbestos industry.

HALL OF FAME

The inaugural class of the Demolition Hall of Fame was last year, originating in an idea from Demolition Hub to have a long-term marker to celebrate deserved people within demolition.

Class of 2023

This year we celebrate Yvonne’s campaigning with the European Asbestos Forum, which she set up in 2014 with the aim of improving international relations and knowledge regarding all matters related to health and safety and asbestos.

Class of 2022

Asbestos Pioneer

The indefatigable industry pioneer Mavis Nye took part in the inaugural event and was deservedly named as Asbestos Pioneer of the Year for her work with the Mavis Nye Foundation and her determination to spread the word of the dangers of asbestos globally.

Universally loved and respected in equal measure, Howard has for two decades been at the head of British demolition as the CEO of the NFDC.

Howard stands down fully from all roles in the NFDC this year and we celebrate his enormous contribution to British and indeed global demolition.

Demolition Person

During the last few months of his NFDC Presidency, William Crooks of Cawarden was named Demolition Person of the Year for his stellar performance as President in difficult times as well as his ongoing commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility with his own company.
