As part of the Visit Laos Year 2018 campaign, Champa Meuanglao magazine held the My Favorite Place Photo Competition in April and May, which drew hundreds of entries by both Lao citizens and foreign residents. Phoukhoun is a place with cool temperatures throughout the year. The time of year when the scenery here is most beautiful and captivating is during winter. Nature is plentiful here and I am very glad each time I can experience this atmosphere.

This place always brings peace to my heart whenever I visit, while the beauty and purity of Lao nature is always breathtaking. Even though there are some man-made aspects at this location, this place still brings out the best in the natural scenery of Laos.

This photograph was taken in Vang Vieng from a hot air balloon in the morning. Vang Vieng has such beautiful natural scenery that I travel there several times every year when I need to take a break from work in Vientiane. I have a love of nature, photography, canoeing and hiking, and I can do all this in and around Vang Vieng, so it is most certainly my favorite place in Laos.

busan Gamcheon Culture Village

Set on a steep hill on the outskirts of Busan, this was a poor village until an art project revitalized this community in 2009. Artists began to paint murals and add street art throughout the maze of alleyways. Now the community is a living art piece and a draw for tourists to explore.

Beomeosa Temple

Located slightly north of the city on the edge of Geumjeongsan Mountain, this has been a religious site for over 1300 years. Beomeosa represents some of the best of Korean traditional architecture and even offers overnight temple stays. Nearby mountain springs, pine forests, and a grove of wisteria aid contemplation of one’s place in the natural world, giving a sense of peaceful calm.

Songdo Beach

A haven for swimmers during warm months; even off season this beach is great to visit. Extending from the sand is a large elevated walkway over the ocean to get snapshots of the lighthouse in the harbor and to see the clear blue water below. Flying overhead is a cable car affording amazing views of both sea and city that ends at Amnam Park – a protected forest reserve overlooking rocky cliffs on the water.

Taejongdae

Haedong Yonggung Temple

A stunning seaside natural park of rocky cliffs, evergreen trees, a lighthouse, and an observatory overlooking the ocean. Visitors can enjoy a walk through the hilly park, or ride on a tram which stops at several areas. From the dining deck of the observatory, one could spend hours watching ďŹ shing boats and gazing over the rocky crags jutting from the water. The lighthouse also offers some iconic photos.

Unusually, this famous temple is built along the seaside and was constructed centuries ago to alleviate a drought. This place is popular with locals and foreigners alike, as there is a large statue of the Goddess of Mercy who is rumored by worshippers to bring success, as well as a large Buddha that is said to cure physical and mental illness. It is also worthwhile to visit the vendors on the walk down to the temple, as they offer an impressive array of delicious foods to try.

Geumgang Park

This is a lovely spot for hikers in an amazing pine forest. From the bottom, a cable car affords scenic views over Busan on a ride up to a clearing popular with locals for weekend picnics. From here, treks around the park are possible; visiting ancient Geumjeong fortress gates and secluded temples. JULY / AUGUST 2018

BIFF Square

This area has been renovated to commemorate the world-famous Busan International Film Festival. Handprints of visiting stars have been immortalized in bronze in the pavement. Lining the walkways are many street food stalls catering to a variety of tastes. This is a great way to sample Korean food!

Songjeong Samdae Gukbop

While the name is a mouthful, the rice soup with slices of pork, dipping sauces, and side dishes of vegetables are very satisfying. This restaurant is famous with locals and tourists alike, and prices are very affordable, so beware of potential queues. The proprietor also speaks English to help explain how best to eat it.

Jagalchi Market

The ground floor is a huge fresh fish market offering an exotic array of seafood; such as huge crabs, fish, octopus, anemones, eels, clams, and marine worms. Vendors are happy to prepare them on the spot for you. Upstairs restaurants also offer fish options, some so fresh they are served squirming on your plate!

Novotel Ambassador Busan

Opening directly onto Haeundae beach, families will really love the convenient access. Nearby, is the Sea Life Busan Aquariam, and a plethora of restaurants to satisfy all tastes. Service standards are well up to Novotel levels and most of the rooms even have sea views.

Lotte Hotel Busan

Perfectly located for families or business travelers in downtown Busan, this hotel offers great views of the city. With four international restaurants, a lounge bar, and a bakery, guests can enjoy many tastes from the comfort of the hotel!

PACHYDERM’S PA R A D I S E

T

hrough dawn’s mist they appear, their giant monotone silhouettes rolling slowly from the jungle hills towards the lake. One by one, they enter the tranquil waters of Xayaboury’s Nam Tien Lake to bathe. They are joined in near silence by other members of the herd. The gentle procession’s stillness is broken only by the distant sound of the calves’ trumpeting. Laos, formerly known as The Land of a Million Elephants, has seen its elephant population decline due to loss of forest habitat and illegal wildlife trade. Created in 2011, by ElefantAsia NGO co-founder Sébastien Duffillot, a French elephant conservationist who has been working and living in Laos for 20 years, the Elephant Conservation Center (ECC) is taking steps to reverse this trend by bringing awareness to the plight of elephants, as well as offering an opportunity for a respectful visit to see these great beasts in their natural environment. Elephants at the center are here to rest, either waiting to give birth or recovering from an exhausting life in logging or mass tourism industries. Do not expect to see package tours of people riding or bathing with elephants all day long – here, elephants are simply elephants!

Overall, the center is a place that focuses on animal welfare, observation and learning. There is no interaction with elephants, as one of the goals here is to avoid close contact with humans, which would affect their natural behaviour. As the ECC hopes to be able to release these elephants into the wild, eventually, it is important that they enjoy being elephants without being subject to unnatural activities and encounters. Visitors can observe elephants from a number of stations, one of which is a tree-top platform set in the forest surrounding the Socialization Area. The center is home to the only elephant hospital in Laos, where biologists can answer all of your questions about the life cycle of these majestic creatures. Other activities include visiting an elephant museum, kayaking on the breathtaking Nam Tien Lake, and helping take elephants into the lush forest at night to their sleeping grounds. The Elephant Conservation Center is a place where you can get up close with the elephants in their traditional natural environment. Away from mass tourism venues, the center offers a holistic approach to the conservation of Lao elephants. This is not just another elephant camp, as the ECC does not relocate elephants into tourist areas. On the contrary, it takes you to them, in their natural habitat. JULY / AUGUST 2018

I

first visited Muang Champasak only as a quick layover on my way to Wat Phou, but once there I was enchanted by its scenic tranquility. Situated 33 km south of Pakse and just 10 km from Wat Phou, Champasak is generally seen as just a gateway to the ancient Khmer temple, which is truly an injustice. Sandwiched between the Mekong River and mountains, this charming town is steeped in history dating back to 1713 when it was a once bustling ancient city and the prosperous Champasak Kingdom that formed one-third of Laos. Champasak is a worthy destination location all on its own, but for me, one of its main attractions is simply the atmosphere. To thoroughly appreciate its ambiance, rent a bike or take a leisurely stroll through the town’s single road. You will discover modest wood-shuttered shop houses, restaurants, and traditional Lao homes intermingled with decaying colonial mansions that were once royal residences. You will be surprised by the modern, vividly painted homes, lovingly enhanced with local flowers and shrubs. Head down to Wat Muang Kang – a crumbling architectural treasure and one of the loveliest temples in Laos. Shop for handicrafts from all over Laos at Chez Maman, clay art at Champasak Pottery or bamboo handicrafts throughout the town. Be sure to rest along the way to watch the locals fish on the magnificent Mekong River. You can indulge in a half-day spa treatment at the Champasak Spa where you will be pampered by a team of skilled locals trained in traditional massages. In between treatments, you are provided with fresh fruits, herbal drinks, and relaxation time in the garden overlooking the Mekong. Additionally, you will feel altruistic knowing that the spa is non-profit development project established to create jobs for local residents and promote and develop sustainable tourism in Champasak. For something different, spend an evening watching the Shadow Puppet Theater perform under the stars on the bank of the Mekong River.

Accommodations range from upscale hotels to a wide variety of budget guesthouses – from $7 to $75 USD per night. The Nakorn Hotel has amazing views, lovely, modern rooms, and a good restaurant with a distinctive outdoor dining room area – all run by a friendly, helpful family. $35 USD for a double room with a river view. The Inthira Hotel – stylish, well run and reasonably priced, with attractive rooms, free breakfast, a garden, and an excellent restaurant, with friendly, professional and helpful staff. $49 USD for a double room. If you need further incentive to add Champasak to your itinerary, the surrounding cultural landscapes and magnificent daytrips provide an authentic Laos experience. Take a locally crafted ferry to Don Deng, a car-free island directly across the Mekong River from Champasak, and only accessible by boat – the crossing is one of many amazing highlights of the trip. From the ferry dock, you may find yourself greeted by water buffalo lounging in the river. You then board a unique Lao tractor and ride up the 500 meter beach to the spectacular La

GETTING THERE Travel 33 km south of Pakse on a new road on the west bank of the Mekong. The traffic is light and the scenery is gorgeous. Rent a motor bike, car, tuk tuk or arrange a bus through a travel agent. One the way, be sure to stop off at the Wopakok Hotel Restaurant and Bar for a great meal and visit with owners Naly and Sean. The beautiful deck overlooking the Mekong has one the best unobstructed views in Champasak.

Folie Lodge. There you can take a refreshing dip in the pool, lounge and eat poolside, spend the night at a beach-front chalet – each with its own deck to enjoy a spectacular sunset shimmering on the Mekong. Explore the island by foot or bicycle along its single bumpy, tree-lined trail around the island. Along the way, stop and enjoy fresh fruits and coconut or sugar cane juice. Visit traditional Buddhist temples, an ancient forest stupa and basket weaving villages. Alternative accommodations include a Community Lodge – run by a group of villages, or very rustic homestays. These can be arranged through the local tourist office or travel agencies. Located 10 kilometres from Champasak, UNESCO World Heritage-listed Wat Phou is an impressive Khmer temple and a highlight of southern Laos. Explore the ancient temple, then climb the precarious, narrow stone steps – with an occasional frangipani tree offering some much needed shade. At the top you will be rewarded with a stunning view. Trails to the main sanctuary include a carving of the Buddha's footprint on the cliff face, and boulders sculpted to resemble elephants and a crocodile.

hailand has often been described as a ‘food culture’, a statement that implies that food is more than simply sustenance but the centre of almost every aspect of the social life. Indeed, one only needs to wander down any Bangkok street to realise just how true that statement is. Almost everywhere, enterprising vendors have established regular pitches on the pavements throughout the city. Many specialising in one particular item, while others are able to turn their hand to numerous dishes. Yet they all have one thing in common; the food they serve is cheap, tasty and ready in minutes; the very definition of fast food. Whether you are looking for a quick al fresco breakfast, a fullblown lunch, a tempting in-between-meals nibble, dinner with friends, or something to soak up the ale after stumbling out of a nightclub, the street vendors have it all, and almost 24 hours a day. The availability of food and the mind-boggling range of delicious bites on offer are part of the very fabric of this vibrant city, making it a truly exciting place to dine. One of the most frequently heard greetings in Thailand is ‘kin khao yang?’, or ‘have you eaten yet?’ Thai people are communal diners and grazers, seldom eating alone and never satisfied with just one dish. After work, street stalls swarm with office staff and the air is filled with the irresistible aroma of stir-fried chilies, lemongrass scented soups and grilled meats. Although the typical Chinese noodle or chicken and rice stall is still very much part of Bangkok’s culinary street scene, the majority of the street traders come from the northeast of Thailand, economic migrants from the hot and under-developed Issan. As part of the Asian tiger economies much of Thailand’s boom time growth and investment during the early 90s focused on Bangkok, by-passing the rural areas. Resilient and hardworking, Issan people moved in droves to the big city to work as taxi drivers or as labour on construction sites, bringing with them their distinctive music, culture and of course, food. Far from egalitarian, Thailand’s hierarchical social structure meant that Bangkok’s elite and middle classes dismissed Issan as ‘baan nok’, the back-of-beyond with language and culture strongly influenced by neighbouring Laos. In the not too distant past, it was rich coconut milk curries, the

much-lauded royal cuisine or the food of Chinese immigrants that dominated the diet of Bangkok Thais. But as the labour came to build Bangkok so did their culinary skills and the adaptable Issan workers soon established street stalls selling northeastern delights across the entire city. The simple yet fiery food proved a hit with everyone. Som tam, a spicy raw papaya salad, is the most well-known dish from the northeast, so much so that it is almost an institution. If anything could now be considered the national dish of Thailand, it is som tam. Made in a large pestle and mortar called a krok, som tam sellers pepper the streets of Bangkok, with the familiar pok, pok, pok sound made as the dish is mixed alerting passers-by to their presence. Accompanied by the equally famous gai yang, or grilled chicken and sticky rice, a glutinous variety, steamed and eaten with the hand, Issan food is now a regular feature on restaurant menus. Indeed, Issan and Lao restaurants like Hai on Convent Road are packed day and night.

STREET FOOD FUTURE UNDER FIRE Street vendors provide a great service and create a very special atmosphere, not only within the environs of Bangkok but across the entire country. The price of food is kept low due to minimal overheads; most pay a small fee for their pitch to shop owners if they are in front of a business and a weekly backhander to the police. Vendors are such an integral part of Thai life it is hard to imagine the city without them. Bangkok authorities, who have said that they believe there to be more than 40,000 street stalls throughout the city, declared Monday to be a vendor-free day. It is when they are absent that you truly realize how much the city’s character is defined by these amazing roadside chefs. Yet their wonderful cooking and easy availability of cheap and tasty food is increasingly threatened by continued development and gentrification of neighourhoods. In recent years, campaigns by the authorities have attempted to remove them from certain areas, blaming them for contributing to traffic problems, or stating that they are a nuisance for pedestrians. When international dignitaries visit the country stall owners are often banned from

selling on the street in order to ‘clean up the city and create a good impression’. Keen to enforce the rules and regulations that blight many western nations, the authorities seem oblivious to the fact that most visitors love to see and savour Bangkok’s remarkable street food. The modest rural beginnings of professional ballerina Maria Sascha Khan makes her story all the more relatable for Lao youth.

M

aria Sascha Khan grew up in a small farming town with few prospects, but followed an unwavering dream to become a professional ballerina. Through sheer determination and a few strokes of good luck, she was discovered by a former Bolshoi Ballet dancer, and was able to study ballet in England, Monaco, and abroad. Since then, her education and talent has propelled her career to the international stage and beyond. Not satisfied with fame and acclaim alone, Maria Sascha says she’s always been fascinated by the ability of the arts to transform people’s lives. “Much of my passion for my art form is based on how I can use it to help other people. At the moment, it is an exciting time for ballet in Southeast Asia, a place in which until now ballet has been relatively unknown,” she says. Her visit to Laos saw her cover an array of events, including working with Lao children (many of whom had never met a ballerina or had any kind of ballet experience before), speaking as a keynote speaker at a Global Shapers community event, and holding a performance and demonstration at the Lao National School of the Arts. “The welcome and enthusiasm with which I was received and the reception of what I had come to share was so overwhelmingly beyond any expectations. I was moved to tears.” Maria Sascha's time in Laos saw her reaching out to Lao youth, and showing them that following a dream is not only possible, but practical as well. She says that the young people she met seemed eager to expand their horizons and help their country forward into the future.

"It will be exciting to see how they can preserve the cultural traditions of the past while bringing them forward into the future. It has been extraordinary to see the enormous interest in ballet." Being the first ballerina to visit Laos in this capacity, Maria Sascha hopes to grow the art form in partnership with the non-profit arts organization Youth Arts in Action, which is run by her mother and siblings, all of whom are professional artists and dancers. Maria Sascha hopes to bring a ballet masterclass program to Laos, and even perform a ballet she is developing called "Warrior of Light," which recently premiered at the London Coliseum. The ballet is a story focusing on uniting all cultures and people, and her goal is to include the different dancers she has worked with in Southeast Asia and abroad in various iterations of the performance. While ballet is a physically demanding performance art that requires a lot of discipline, it can take performers around the world, expanding horizons and making dreams a reality. As with any classical art form or craft, it takes years of training and dedication to perfect it. And nothing can unite people quite like the arts. "My point has always been that you may not be able to fix the whole world, but you can make it a more beautiful and better place than it was before," she says.

The

NATIONAL DISH of LAOS

A

round the world, diners of all stripes have come to know larb as part of the Thai culinary tradition – evidenced most recently by Aunt May’s (portrayed by Marisa Tomei) "I Larb You” Thai restaurant scene in Marvel’s Spiderman Homecoming. But the dish actually originated in Laos. While it hasn’t yet been nominated for UNESCO Intangible Cultural Asset standing, larb is considered unofficially to be Laos' most prized dish. If you ever needed an ambassador of Lao cuisine, this savory meat salad ensemble would be your best bet. In its simplest form larb is a dish comprised of minced meat seasoned with lime juice, fermented fish sauce, and a variety of other ingredients such as finely ground roasted sticky rice, chilli, mint leaves, onions, herbs and spices. When tossed together, they create a deliciously sophisticated blend of sour, spicy, salty and bitter flavors.

Virtually any meat (bleu, medium, or well-done) can be minced and larb-ed. While pork, beef, chicken, duck, turkey and fish are the more household larb meats, special circumstances – whether it be economical or adventure-derived – call for other more exotic meats to be used. The likes of squirrel, rabbit, venison, horse, offals of all the above, quail, salmon, tuna, crab and many more have been enjoyed by larb enthusiasts in Laos. Even vegetarians need their dose of fresh tofu larb! Larb is typically served with sticky rice but it is also enjoyed by many with steamed rice. And larb should never be eaten without raw vegetables, especially green beans, lettuce, cabbage and cucumber – whatever can be found in season.

ate helped us find this remarkable place. After a visit at the nearby zoo, we meandered down the road and spotted the rather innocuous sign. Paying our 10,000 kip admission to a smiling beret clad man in a camouflage uniform, we were suddenly plunged back in time. In front of us a pre-industrial setting of smoke, heat, and hard work. Men and women handling baskets of salt weighing in at 70–85 kg. Warehouses filled with the coarse, gleaming white salt crystals looking like ski slopes. And smoke everywhere; drifting lazily around. A mother fed her baby wreathed in smoke, while kids scooted down hills of sand on plastic bikes. The air smelled of salt and wood. Everywhere were the lines of wicker baskets used to carry the salt to be weighed, upon which their wages depend. Men and women worked alongside each other stoking fires, changing salt baths, and stirring the precipitating salt crystals. Unhurried, timeless, and perhaps exhausting. I had almost forgotten that Laos floats on an ancient salt water aquifer dating back hundreds of millions of years to when the nation was part of the sea bed. The limestone karst of places like Vang Vieng is testimony to the land’s marine fossil origins. Even in the uplands of Phongsaly one can find fossilised shell beds. It’s ironic that Lao, now famously landlocked, was once under the sea. JULY / AUGUST 2018

In the south of Laos around Savannakhet, salt can be the bane of farmer’s lives, rendering some areas unsuitable for agriculture, while fisherfolk love it, as salt provides the ideal medium to preserve the catch. Lacking refrigerators, Lao people instead salted and fermented fish. The stinky star of Lao cuisine padaek is one that travellers will become acquainted with. In the salt works of Ban Keun it is focal to their lives. The saline water is pumped 100 meters up from below the ground into overhead tanks, the water so saline that crystals gather like stalactites on the side of the structural work. It is then put into wide tanks, under which fires quietly blaze. The water evaporates, leaving the crystals of salt gathered like coral. A man devoid of speech shovels hot salt and gestures for me to try. I gingerly extend my hand. The salt fresh out of the hot bath is surprisingly cool. Ms. Nang with a small child hanging off her hip takes us to the back area where the sun does the hard work. Large shallow pools reflect the clouds. The supervisor strolls casually down between the rows seeming oblivious to the haulage of the women around him. Ms. Nang shows me her hand etched with deep lines by the salt, the skin blackened by charcoal. There are many myths and tales associated with the salt, like most tales about thwarted love, monsters from the deep and of course ancient royalty. These tales some say are universal to all the salt works as salt is linked so inextricably to life and death. Ms. Nang was reluctant to share her stories as the sun rose hotly and her child became agitated. Five families were

rowing up reading adventure novels by authors such as H. Rider Haggard and Jules Verne, I never dreamt I would find a real place that evoked such feelings of exploration and awe. Spring River Resort left me astonished at its amazing service, devotion to sustainability, and the stunning nature it aims to protect. Nestled in a scenic bend of the Nam Hinboun River, Spring River Resort was one of the first hotels in the Konglor area many years ago. Since 2015, it is under the management of a Swiss-Thai couple, Thomas and Vicky, the newly-renovated resort is heaven for Lao and foreign tourists looking to get away into the uncanny karsts of the Phou Hin Poun National Protected Area. The landscape looked so much like The Lost World that I half-expected to see dinosaurs rumbling through the thick foliage. Boarding a local fishing boat, Thomas took me out to see what really makes this hotel a special find – a secret lagoon! Situated directly across the river from the hotel was the mouth of a small blue stream. When I arrived in the late afternoon, a mysterious fog had developed over this inlet. As we paddled into it, I dipped my hand into the water. “The water is about 4 degrees cooler here, so on humid days this cold water lowers the dew point in the air just above it, creating a layer of fog in mornings and evenings,” Thomas explained. As we paddled onward up the lagoon, Thomas mentioned that the stream is a retreat area for diverse aquaculture, with over 21 different species of fish just in this one area. Mammals, such as bats and small primates, known as langurs, also make their home in the area. Pristine forests flanked

both banks. The water was so clear that I could easily see huge fallen trees lying several meters below the surface. They brought to mind sunken treasure ships, lying unconstructed at the bottom of the lagoon. Arriving at the source of the spring, we could see the sapphire water welling up to the surface. Local villagers row boats here to collect fresh water from the source for their daily use. Looking at the imposing boulders near the spring, I noticed something moving – small freshwater shrimp scuttling away from me! The friendly owners are passionate about the area and want to see it develop and prosper in a fair and balanced way. “We bought most of the surrounding land, so that we could turn this area into a nature preserve and protect it from tourism exploitation. We want to conserve this beautiful lagoon and the forests around it, so that future generations will continue to be able to enjoy it,” Thomas added. Visitors also like to visit the humongous Konglor Cave, so the resort has created a unique water taxi service which supports local communities by using local boats to take guests 30 minutes up to the cave entrance. Along the way they can see local life and impressive nature hidden from the road. The resort has two levels of comfort: Garden View bungalows, which are cozy bamboo structures with shared facilities; and River View bungalows, which perch above the clear blue river and have en suites. I

t is an uncontested fact that Lao farmers know their trade. And when it comes to tobacco, these hardworking individuals produce some of the country’s best leaves. While these are very much prized in Laos, many are unaware that they are much sought after outside the country as well. As with other commodities like rubber, coffee, minerals, and electricity, the tobacco leaf grown by Laos’ farmers is of export caliber. With the support of Lao Tobacco, these golden leaves have been sent as far afield as Germany, Holland, Poland and even Madagascar. In order to qualify for these markets, the exporter must possess the right skillset: growing, curing, and selecting the right leaf, with the perfect color, aroma and texture. And only the finest leaves are chosen to make the journey to lands where they are appreciated by those with a taste for the exotic.

F

rom humble beginnings, Inthy Deuansavanh has become a titan in the Lao tourism industry as founder of both Inthira Group and Green Discovery. Educated in Russia and working in Laos as a salesman, Inthy never thought about tourism as a career path, but in 1998, his family began a small restaurant in their French colonial house. “At that time, the country was just opening up and we hadn’t seen many tourists before. We were serving only Lao food at the restaurant, and due to our location next to Nam Phou, we were getting a steady stream of foreign customers.” This restaurant became Khop Chai Deu. Growing over the years from 36 seats to over 300, the original 1923 building is still there, but much has been added and changed. “The decor of the building is similar to our menu in that it evolves and has absorbed other influences, but the core is still very Lao.” Khop Chai Deu became the cornerstone for Inthira Group, a hospitality company which owns three popular standalone restaurants and two charming hotels. In conjunction with the growth of Inthira Group, Inthy also opened Green Discovery, an adventure tour operator, in 2000. Currently covering Laos with 7 offices, it offers the best adventure itineraries available, including trekking, kayaking, cycling, rock climbing, and ziplining. These trips have a focus on sustainable travel as Inthy believes that “tours must be meaningful for both locals as well as travellers, they must preserve the local environment and culture, and must benefit local communities.”

Reflecting on the past two decades in tourism, Inthy has seen many changes and warns that “with more tourists coming in, we need to make sure that sites are well protected and are not ruined for future visitors.” He contends that current arrival numbers could really benefit Laos if it could target longer-staying and higher-spending tourists. If his advice is heeded, then Laos and Khop Chai Deu could be “where the world meets” well into the future. JULY / AUGUST 2018

Lao Airlines Charms Students on Children’s Day On the recent occasion of Children’s Day, Lao Airlines held activities for students to learn about airplanes at Wattay International Airport. The educational event was held on the morning of June 1st and was attended by students and their guardians who were able to learn first hand about airplanes. Under the leadership of Mr. Soutsakhone Lounsengchan, mechanics for Lao Airlines Engineering Co. (LAECO) and airline staff warmly welcomed the students and guardians. The event was very exciting for students as it was the first time for many of them to be close to a real airplane. Lao Airlines organizes this event every year in order to spread information and inspire children to become pilots and work with airlines. Giving them an opportunity to approach and realize these dreams also helps engineer future manpower for the airline as well.

“WHEN I HEARD THAT LAO AIRLINES HAD OPENED A NEW ROUTE TO INCHEON, I IMMEDIATELY APPLIED FOR A POSITION.”

A

s Yoon Sora poses gracefully before the camera, unconsciously making the tiny, elegant move ments of a flight attendant, she looks every bit the part in her silk sinh, or Lao skirt, which is part and parcel of the Lao Airlines uniform. Although conspicuously Korean among her colleagues, she tells us her story in flawless Lao. Arriving in Vientiane eighteen years ago from Korea, after her father was transferred to Laos for work, Sora recalls a difficult transition to the developing country. “It was very different from my hometown. The culture was different, the food was different, and I couldn’t understand anyone. At that time many people in Korea had not even heard of Laos,” Sora says. But, after completing both high school and university in Laos, Sora is now proud to call the country home. She’s also more

than proud to have become a representative of Laos on board the national carrier, Lao Airlines. “Every woman dreams of becoming a flight attendant. When I heard that Lao Airlines had opened a new route to Incheon, I immediately applied for a position.” At first the airline was accepting applications from Lao nationals only, however later Korean citizens were encouraged to apply. “It was like a dream come true when I heard that my application had been accepted,” she says. There are now five Korean flight attendants traversing the skies with Lao Airlines. While the others are all based in Incheon and fly back and forth from Korea, Sora is a special case. Effortlessly switching between English, Korean, and Lao, she is able to work on all domestic and international routes offered by Lao Airlines. “My favorite part about the job is that I can travel to so many different places and meet so many different people. My favorite city in Laos is definitely Luang Prabang; it is so peaceful and the people there are very friendly,” says Sora. Sora has been working as a Lao Airlines flight attendant for the past three years, and plans to remain in Laos. JULY / AUGUST 2018
