Champasak cultural landscape from the main sanctuary of Vat Phou

ocated in the southern part of Laos, Vat Phou, a World Heritage Site, showcases Hong Nang Sida Temple, which bridges Laos' past and present. “Despite its importance, many remain unaware of the temple's nature and its location. Hong Nang Sida Temple, which held a thousand-year-old secret and remained dormant for a long period, is now undergoing restoration with the support of the Korean government. I hope that more Lao and foreign tourists will visit Hong Nang Sida Temple and witness the restoration site of a key chapter of Laos' illustrious past,” said Amphol Sengphachanh, Deputy Director of the Champasak Department of Information Culture and Tourism. The Champasak Plain in southern Laos spans the Mekong River, and it is here that the globally renowned Vat Phou Temple is situated. In 2001, UNESCO registered this temple as part of the "Vat Phou and Associated Ancient Settlements within the Champasak Cultural Landscape." Every February, the Vat Phou Festival draws in 200,000 visitors. Yet, many remain unaware of another enchanting temple in the vicinity: Hong Nang Sida Temple. This temple, long in ruins, was not as widely recognized as its counterpart. According to local legend in Champasak, Princess Sida, the daughter of the king of Kammatha, once decided to sacrifice herself to a monster to save her kingdom and her father from crisis. Thankfully, with the bravery of Katanam, the princess was rescued. The two are believed to have married and lived happily ever after. It is said that Hong Nang Sida Temple was erected in honor of Princess Sida's noble willingness to sacrifice herself. NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2023

Hong Nang Sida Temple is believed to date back to the 11th to 12th centuries. Built of sandstone, the temple had completely collapsed, obscuring the interior of the main shrine. Currently, the ruins of Hong Nang Sida Temple are undergoing restoration by the Korea Cultural Heritage Administration and the Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation, slowly returning it to its original state. The restoration project of Hong Nang Sida Temple in Laos, Korea's first overseas cultural heritage restoration project, began in earnest in 2013 after the signing of an agreement between the Republic of Korea and Lao governments in 2011. For a systematic restoration, the initial four years were dedicated to detailed planning through humanistic, scientific, and engineering academic investigations, which included monitoring, excavation, and ground stability studies. The subsequent four years focused

on infrastructure development such as improving access roads, establishing stone conservation treatment facilities (often referred to as “stone hospitals”), providing crane equipment, and restoring the platform and mandapa. During the first phase of the project in 2019, we discovered a goldplated yoni, which has the potential to be designated as a national treasure of Laos. Additionally, the restoration of Hong Nang Sida gained international recognition for its integrity. The second phase of the project began in 2021, with plans to complete the restoration of the Hong Nang Sida main shrine by 2025. The goal of this project is to restore Hong Nang Sida Temple and foster self-reliance of the Lao government and the Vat Phou World Heritage Office for the sustainable growth of the Lao cultural heritage sector. As such, the restoration process emphasizes

15

strengthening Laos' capabilities and transferring crucial technologies for cultural heritage restoration. Various processes are involved in the restoration of Hong Nang Sida Temple. Stones from the collapsed structure are carefully dismantled one by one. Each dismantled stone is documented using 3D technology, and those requiring preservation are treated at a specialized facility known as the Stone Hospital. The entire process, from before the dismantling to after, is meticulously documented using digital technology. The Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation is providing full support to enable the local Vat Phou World Heritage Office to oversee and execute the process directly Hong Nang Sida Temple can be accessed from the entrance of Vat Phou Temple by following the sign to the left (south) for another 2 km. Since the road has been cleared for restoration work, you can easily reach Hong Nang Sida Temple by various means, such as car or motorbike. After arriving at the entrance of Hong Nang Sida Temple, follow the crushed stone path to reach the Stone Hospital. For transportation, park near the Stone Hospital and explore Hong Nang Sida Temple.

Hong Nang Sida Temple is a significant site where a new chapter in Korea's cultural heritage overseas development assistance project is unfolding. By leveraging Korea's advanced technology to enhance the skills of the Lao people, tireless efforts are being made to awaken Princess Sida, who lies dormant. If you visit Hong Nang Sida now, you can witness this historic scene firsthand. By the end of the project in 2025, the newly restored Hong Nang Sida will be unveiled. If you wish to be part of a moment where the splendor of Khmer culture comes to life, we recommend visiting Hong Nang Sida Temple now.

The Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation, a public institution under the Cultural Heritage Administration of the Republic of Korea, specializes in promoting and preserving Korean traditional culture through international exchange and cooperation. NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2023

THE TOWN THAT TIME FORGOT (AND WE'RE GLAD IT DID) Savannakhet is much more than a pit stop TEXT & PHOTOGRAPHS BY MICK SHIPPEN

N

ot so long ago, Savannakhet was seen as little more than a town to pass through, or at most a necessary one-night rest stop to help break the monotony of the long straight road that runs from Vientiane to Pakse. Trying to get people to linger longer has always been a hard sell. A few kilometers north of the town, the 1.6-kilometer Friendship Bridge spans the Mekong to Mukdahan in Thailand. It opened in 2006, and although it’s an important trade route between Laos and its neighbor, the much-anticipated boom for Savannakhet failed to fully materialize. But in many ways, this has been of benefit to visitors who can still enjoy the town’s ramshackle charms and quiet streets. The draw for many is the old quarter, a compact area that has almost as many French colonial era (1893-1953) buildings as Luang Prabang. Unlike the over-manicured UNESCO World Heritage town in the north, Savannakhet has been left to age gracefully. There are numerous terraced shophouses that flank a one-time market square called Talat Yen, offices, public buildings, and St. Theresa's Catholic Church, all of which bear the trademark French architectural style and motifs. Without any UNESCO funding, not only has there been no restoration, there’s also thankfully been no construction of faux buildings on vacant land as there has been in Luang Prabang. In Savannakhet, what you see is what you get and it’s all the more real for it.

Coffee Culture Of course, there’s a fine line between the attractive patina imbued by time and the unstoppable slide toward decrepitude. One can but hope for a series of controlled and sympathetic restorations, rather than the architectural equivalent of full cosmetic surgery and Botox. Yet though the appeal and potential of the crumbling old buildings has clearly been lost on the older generation, it’s not so with young local entrepreneurs. For a glimpse of what is possible, head to Le Corbeau, a characterful café and cocktail bar (and the nearest thing to a hipster joint you’ll find in Savannakhet, but don’t let that put you off!) run by Khounepaserth ‘Bie’ Siaksone, a key figure on the Lao artisan coffee scene. Housed in one of the town’s grandest centuryold buildings, the fabulous interior is one that could have only been created by the steady passage of time. Its lofty five-meter ceilings with lazily turning fans, shuttered windows, atmospheric lighting, and peeling paint add to the venue’s allure. It has been renovated just enough to make it functional and remains exquisite in all its faded glory. Here you can enjoy a selection of excellent coffees throughout the day and cocktails by night. There are also light bites and pizza available. Savannakhet’s youthful energy has also manifested itself through art that uses the old buildings as canvases. It’s fun to wander the streets and discover the many wall paintings that depict scenes of daily life as well as enormous psychedelic dinosaurs.

Breakfast of Champions Diners in search of Lao food may find Savannakhet challenging. Hospitable to a fault, ‘Savannite’ restaurateurs mainly cater to their neighbors’ tastes who venture over the river on day trips, meaning it is easier to find Thai food than local dishes. The town’s considerable Vietnamese population dominates the daytime dining scene with a proliferation of pho shops. The ‘breakfast of champions’ is to be found at Nga’s Pepperlunch. Tucked away at the bottom of a narrow alley off Lasavongseuk Road, this unassuming eatery serves up sizzling hot plates of eggs, pork, and xin mai meatballs, accompanied by a crusty baguette and tea, to a steady stream of appreciative and loyal fans from 7 a.m. until they sell out (usually by midday). At night a huge floating restaurant on the riverfront serves standard Thai fare, while French cuisine can be found at Restaurant Chez Van Som. There are also several cafés, bars, and restaurants in and around the Talat Yen area. A popular night spot is the old 1960s Lao Chareun Rama cinema and its environs which house a handful of boutiques and coffee shops. There is also a night market here and the popular alfresco Bang Bar. You can tap into more of the town’s history with a visit to the home of Kaysone Phomvihane (1920-1992), the first prime minister of Lao PDR, who was born in the province. Savannakhet also achieved fame when French geologist Josué Heilman Hoffet unearthed fossilized dinosaur bones in 1936 and in subsequent excavations during the ‘90s by a Lao-French team. A tiny tworoom museum, complete with flashing multicolored lights, is overseen by the enthusiastic and extremely helpful Mr. Vath, who will allow you to handle fossils and fragments of meteorites, is a must for any itinerary.

Other cultural highlights within the town include Wat Xaiyaphoum, the largest and most colorful temple in Savannakhet, and at sunset, the enormous riverfront Naga that faces menacingly toward Thailand. Located 15 kilometers from town, the ancient That Ing Hang is worth the drive. The stately and beautifully carved stupa here was restored in the mid-16th century. It stands at the center of a large quadrangle, covered on three sides and lined with dozens of Buddha images. The site has been of great religious significance for 2,000 years and is known as a place where the Buddha rested and received alms. A festival of worship is held here every December. After visiting the stupa, if you are of the mind to push on another 15 kilometers, you can enjoy lunch at Xeno which is famous for grilled chicken. More than 60 vendors will be vying for your business here. Today, Savannakhet is so much more than a stopover en route to Vientiane or Pakse. Take time to discover the unique character of ‘The Town that Time Forgot’. You’ll be glad you did.

HMONG NEW YEAR Enjoy this colorful tapestry of traditions TEXT BY JASON ROLAN PHOTOGRAPHS BY PHOONSAB THEVONGSA

T

he Hmong New Year festival is an important cultural celebration observed by the Hmong people, an ethnic group with a rich history and cultural heritage in Southeast Asia, particularly in the mountainous regions of China, Vietnam, Thailand, and Laos. The festival typically occurs at the end of the harvest season, usually in November or December, depending on the lunar calendar. The Hmong New Year is a time for the Hmong community to come together, celebrate their cultural identity, and pay homage to their ancestors. It serves as a way to preserve their traditions and pass them down to younger generations. The festival includes various rituals and ceremonies, such as traditional dances, elaborate colorful clothing, and the playing of traditional musical instruments like the qeej. These elements are integral to the celebration, reflecting the Hmong people's spiritual beliefs and folklore. Unique in Laos, this festival often includes nonlethal bull wrestling matches, where local cattle spar against each other for points, with the first one to run away declared the loser. Local youths also challenge each other in games of top-spinning and archery. The Hmong New Year festival is also a time for young people to socialize and potentially find romance. It is a common practice for young men and women to participate in courtship rituals during the festivities, with the hope of forming new relationships, particularly through a ball-tossing game called pov pob. This festival is celebrated over much of northern Laos, but the largest event occurs in Xieng Khouang in mid-December.

iles from nowhere, in remote Laos, grandmothers, mothers, daughters, sisters, and wives forage, grow, and prepare natural cotton, hemp, jungle vine, and silk yarn for weaving at the Marcelline & San (M&S) “Fabric for Life” looms in Vientiane and Vang Vieng. These skilled women are part of the M&S initiatives commenced with the objective of preserving age-old traditions and developing a cottage industry in Laos’ unique handwoven fabric sector. M&S is the handwoven fabric business of Lanjan Holdings Sole Company Limited, founded in 2016 by Sri Lankan-born Laos resident Jeetendra Marcelline. Jeetendra’s passion for weaving heritage began on his first visit to Laos in 2013. During extensive travels in the mountainous northern regions, he was mesmerized by the weaving skills in traditional villages. The beauty, durability, and malleability of natural fibers set alight Jeetendra’s creativity and he was inspired to design fabric comprised of only natural yarn and natural dyes. Observing life and patterns in Mekong lands, India, Sri Lanka, Japan, Egypt, Persia, Europe, and North America, particularly from the ancient world and modern romantic era, and from cricket, M&S created the collections Saeng, Whiter Shade of Pale, Palanquin, Mae Nam Kong, Vieng Chan, and Savan.

Women are at the heart of the weaving tradition. Since its inception, the team has traveled extensively to remote areas and learned of the constraints and challenges facing the weavers. Together with the villagers, the team commenced programs to ensure supply and build capacity. In doing so, M&S eliminated the technical, financial, and commercial risks that growers and weavers typically face, and household income was supplemented. The M&S Outgrower programs in Luang Prabang and Houaphan support partners with up-front working capital and purchase of all yarn produced at a pre-agreed price. The M&S Home Weaver program was designed with the objective of providing weavers looms, yarn, and training to work at home, with the freedom to attend to their day-to-day responsibilities. To ensure quality, the process is supported by video calls and regular visits. M&S incentivizes staff to grow professionally and personally. All of the team are provided with opportunities to develop their craft, learn foreign languages, and innovate. Regular study tours to heritage sites are aimed at learning about weaving heritage and improving design. Facilities are developed after consultation. The site of the looms, Hor Tamhuk, was chosen considering travel distance, ensuring that journeys are less than thirty minutes from home to work. Fabric is craft, symbolism, creed, tradition, persona, and identity. “Protecting nature, NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2023

culture, and tradition are key drivers in our activities. Our weaves depict the tangible and intangible heritage of Laos, its intellectual property, and our common human heritage,” says Yom, Head Weaver at M&S. These underlying values are imbued in the team, with passion and pride prerequisites at every stage. For every type of use, a suitable and affordable texture could be woven, which is part of the ethos. The modus operandi focuses on the empirical patterns with the correct mix of natural yarn and technique, allowing for innovation, adaptation, and scalability to meet bespoke customer needs. Every texture and motif has been developed over many years with careful research. Tests at international laboratories are carried out at various times during the entire process to ensure that all yarn, tear strength, and shrinkage meet or exceed industry standards. A seamless value chain design, planting, procuring, preparing, spinning, weaving, and finishing is based on prudent organization at every step, coupled with in-parallel guidance and supervision. Yom, the Head Weaver, supported by Jeetendra, is involved at every stage. Experienced eyes, binary minds, and dexterous hands produce rolls of fabric that meet the desired quality, durability, and style. M&S' vision is couched firmly in the precept that in order to survive and grow, creating a cottage industry, with efficient supply and economies of scale, is vital. Securing raw materials on a regular basis together with in-time production is critical for building a competitive business, meeting timelines, and riding the cycles of international markets. Demography and lifestyle changes threaten the weaving heritage. As Laos rapidly transforms

from land-locked to land-linked, the sector faces changes caused by increased trade, including cheaper synthetic yarns and textiles, rising freight costs, wage inflation, and competition from better-organized economies. As the young seek more lucrative job opportunities in Laos and the region, the baton is not being passed to the next generation. Lessons “learned by doing” are many. Jeetendra shares “There is much to do for weaving to survive and grow. The overriding aim should be to grow Laos’ weaving sector by encouraging longterm investment and support for all stakeholders in the fledgling years. Fiscal incentives, such as access to finance for training and working capital, are some policy measures that would help enormously. Registering trademarks and securing geographical intellectual property certification would enhance the Made in Laos brand, protect natural competitive advantages, and garner higher value for handwoven fabric. Ethical and accurate labeling would build trust in domestic and international markets and showcase authenticity. Exemption from certain taxes and duties would help relieve some of the budgetary constraints and free up working capital for all weaving businesses, and in turn, allow them to support weavers and growers at a grassroots level.” A Lao proverb notes, “Before you walk, you must crawl.” M&S has crawled through many challenges since its inception. Today, against the backdrop of the magical sound of looms at Hor Tamhuk and in the villages, with the collective experience of its staff and partners, including over 30 women, M&S is positioned for expansion, supporting the livelihoods of all stakeholders, and championing the incomparable weaving heritage of Laos.

CK TRAVEL

Where hospitality meets innovation TEXT BY AMRITA PAUL PHOTOGRAPHS BY CHRIS BARTH above: CK Travel allows travelers to see the real beauty of Laos 1. CK Travel founders Chris Barth and Kevyn McGraw 2. Helicopter charters are available for incredible sightseeing journeys by air

A

new but ambitious entrant in the Lao tourism market, CK Travel is a company that aims to revolutionize travel within the country by offering an array of customized services for every kind of traveler. So, whether you are a budget backpacker, an eco-conscious tourist, or a luxury traveler, CK Travel has got you covered. The brainchild of entrepreneurs Chris Barth and Kevyn McGraw, who have lived in Laos for 16 years and 12 years respectively, CK Travel's tagline, "Relax, we got it", aptly sums up the extensive list of services the company wants to provide an increased number of travelers expected next year during Laos' ASEAN Chairmanship and Visit Laos Year 2024.

"Since we have lived in Laos for a long time, we hoped to address the gaps in the country's tourism sector that can be improved. Through CK Travel, we want to promote the hospitality of Lao people and Lao hotels internationally and be the link between the services that exist here already and the tourists that are coming," says Kevyn, who is also the founder of ASEAN Contact Center, a call center development company with over 350 staff, servicing customers from Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, and Brunei. To ensure seamless travel and stay even in the most remote locations, CK Travel has become the first Affiliate Partner of Agoda in Laos, to personally certify and list less traveled destinations on their website (www. cktravel.vip), which might not be available directly on Agoda. "We will also have a 24/7 helpline number, accessible across multiple mobile messaging apps like WhatsApp, Line,

Kakao, and WeChat, to offer live translations for foreigners across eight different languages, while they are traveling around the country," says Chris, who also runs the company Chris Barth Expat & Visa Services, offering documentation and visa services to expats and companies in Laos since 2012. Additionally, CK Travel has already appointed representatives in seven cities spread across the country namely Vientiane Capital, Houay Xai (Bokeo), Luang Prabang, Phonsavanh (Xieng Khouang), Vang Vieng (Vientiane Province), Thakhek (Khammouane) and Pakse (Champasak), to provide tourists with special access to CK-certified local tours and events that they might not know of otherwise. "Unifying the traditional physical model of travel agencies in Laos, with our online and social presence, we also wanted travelers to be able to meet a real person settled and well informed about Laos' most traveled provinces to know what's available to see locally and discuss cool tours, events, local live music, which we recommend as the most interesting and safe things to do in the area," adds Kevyn. Alongside providing full support to tourists with varied budgets, like five-star hotels, private jets for the luxury traveler, or nationwide charter flights for groups of up to 10 people to visit heritage destinations in no time, CK Travel will also provide quality medical insurance for its

customers which covers both land and air evacuation in case of an emergency. Chris informs, "Even for those already traveling with insurance, it might not cover medical evacuation. Hence, we will provide affordable insurance options that will ensure a prompt medical evacuation to Thailand, in case of a health emergency." The entrepreneurs feel that although inflation is currently skyrocketing in the country, it's a good time for foreign tourists to visit since their money will now get them further in Laos. "It's fair to say that it is an advantage for a tourist, enabling one to see much more of this beautiful country, and CK Travel is here to provide you with all the information and all support you need," says Kevyn. Following the CK Travel website's official launch in November, the company will aspire to curate even more unique experiences for visitors in the future like collaborating with a village to help them experience authentic rural life in Laos and expanding to more physical locations. Most importantly, the enthusiastic founders want to keep learning from their mistakes and continuously improve on the experience that they have set out to build. "Laos may not have beaches but it has beautiful rivers, villages, wonderful people, and much better infrastructure than it did 10 years ago. It is a laidback and safe place and through our company, we want to make it easy and accessible for tourists to experience the natural beauty of this country and the wholehearted nature of Lao people which is just unique and so special," concludes Chris. hiang Mai, Thailand's “Rose of the North”, has long been celebrated for its impressive arts and crafts. Quaint textiles, silver, and ceramic studios dot the walled city’s picturesque and temple-lined lanes, and the creative energy even extends to Chiang Mai’s neighboring Lamphun and Lampang Provinces. The opening of the MAIIM Museum of Modern Art further enhanced Chiang Mai’s reputation as the country’s contemporary art and design hub. At once laid back and adventurous, Chiang Mai creatives are known for their willingness to experiment and innovate. The best time to tap into the city’s creative milieu is December, when Chiang Mai shows off its creative energy with three crafty, design-centric events.

Chiang Mai Design Week 2-10 December 2023

Slated for 2-10 December 2023, the ninth edition of Chiang Mai Design Week is a dizzying line-up of workshops, talks, installations, crafts and food markets, and live music. This year’s theme — “Transforming Local” — encourages exhibitors and attendees to mull over ideas related to adapting, growing, and innovating within and beyond local boundaries. Over 150 creatives are expected to take part, and exhibitions, popup crafts, food markets, and music shows will be held across key ‘creative districts’ or neighborhoods, including the Three Kings Monument in the old city, Chang Moi (near Thapae Gate), San Khampheng, and Nimmanhaemin. facebook.com/chiangmaidesignweek

Nimman Arts & Design Promenade (NAP)

5-11 December 2023

Nimman, a hip neighborhood with charming boutiques, restaurants, cafés, and bars, is home to NAP, one of Chiang Mai’s best-loved crafts fairs. During the fair, decorative lights, street food trucks, and stalls teeming with locally-designed handicrafts, clothing, jewelry, ceramics, and hill tribe textiles line the length of Nimman Soi 1 and spill into One Nimman open-air mall. The family-friendly event includes plenty of food, music, and hands-on craft workshops. This year, the annual festival is scheduled from 5-11 December and promises to be as exciting as years past. facebook.com/nimmansoi1

Muan Muan Market @ Jing Jai Central Market 14-17 December 2023

Nearly two years ago, Thai retail powerhouse Central Group took over the homegrown, bohemian Jing Jai Market and transformed it into a thriving creative district. The 28-acre market boasts over 500 Thai and international boutiques and restaurants, galleries, an expansive food hall, and a sea of pop-up stalls selling contemporary and traditional handicrafts, textiles, apparel, lifestyle, and home goods. The best time to visit the market is on the weekends and during the annual Jing Jai Muan Muan Market, scheduled this year from 14-17 December 2023. During the MuanMuan amps up the market’s standard offerings with even more craft vendors, along with a smorgasbord of local food hawkers and music venues. facebook.com/jjmarketchiangmai
