BET WINNER HOLDS MBILO MBIL

These fans were very excited to witness the Mbilo Mbilo show

T

he hype has been building and last month August 14th was the day of reckoning as Uganda’s ‘International artiste’ was to finally gauge his stand among the elites of the trade at home having tasted success on the continental and global scene with tours all over the world.

Kenzo leads the East African connection in a dance

including local celebrities, socialites corporate and Big Talent followers with U.S Ambassador to Uganda Scott H. DeLisi leading a huge contingent of excited American fans who danced throughout the concert.

There were huge expectations from the local community and media fraternity as evidenced by the presence of the big number of journalists both local and foreign who came to witness the break through artiste who has made history by being the first winner of the BET(Category) he won in East Africa.

The attendance was good though parts of the Parking yard remained empty and most fans kept time as the gates were already cleared by 8:30Pm. And with curtain raisers taking to stage to warm up the floor, Airtel Uganda who are the official sponsors of the Mbili Mbilo concert took time off to give out some freebies and announced Kenzo as their official Brand Ambassador for all upcoming projects and campaigns.

And also as expected, there were a big number of fans who turned up from different parts of the world

Kenzo dressed in White and Gold then hit the stage at around 10.00pm backed up by a live band that also had

Kenzo divided his performances into 5 stages and by the time he came back for second last session after a break, artistes like Khalifa Aganaga, Gravitty Omittujju and King Saha had joined in the fun with a few performances of their own after which Kenya’s Amani and Tanzania’s Ommy Dimpoz joined Kenzo on stage in an East Africa-connect to sing ‘Sina Makosa’ which has become some kind of East African anthem. Kenzo then did some of his most popular and recent songs like ‘Stress free’, ‘Ogenda Kunziza’, ‘Maria Rosa’, ‘Kamungulize’, ‘Zigido’ and ‘Stamina’ after which his

Ghetto president Bobi Wine then sent the crowd into an overdose of ecstasy when he stepped on stage with vice president Nubian Lee and claimed he saw Kenzo grow up from having one shirt and one pair of shoes to an international superstar. Kenzo then concluded his performances with ‘Shake your body’, ‘Mbuuza’, ‘Nze Asinga’, ’Nice and Lovely’, ‘Jambole’, block buster hit song ‘Sitya loss’ and the concert theme song ‘Mbilo Mbilo’ before closing a few minutes past midnight.

KONSHENS AND JAMAICAN DANCE-HALL

J

amaican singing sensations Busy Signal and Konshens put up a splendid performance last evening at Cricket oval Kampala during the ‘Dance with the champions’ concert courtesy of Pepsi. The two artistes performed to the pleasure of their Ugandan fans and fully utilized their one and a half hours both spent on stage. Being his third time in Uganda, Konshens was the first on stage and like his signature tune every time he comes to the Pearl of Africa, he shouted “Uganda are you ready” and in response, the crowd in unison yelled “yes”. The lights dimmed, he took to the stage 15 minutes to 10pm clad in a camouflaged jacket,

44

Chano8. September 2015

tight black jeans and a black T-shirt with engravings of his name. The artiste then did songs like ‘Simple song’, ‘No retreat no surrender’, ‘Sidung’, ‘Do sum’n’ and’Gal a bubble among others. However, mid-way his performance, there was some sound anomalies that not only distracted him but also the highly excited crowd. At some point, the Jamaican artiste together with his close friend and backup artiste Dario were heard shouting “power, power”. It took Blaze events 15 minutes to restore the power problem and that is when he introduced Jose Chameleon on stage.

The “Bwerere” singer then worked up the crowd with his “Gimme gimme” song hence restoring the moods of the crowd.. When Konshens was done, Balaam then ushered in Mrs Justine Kasule Lumumba, the NRM secretary general to pass on a message from the President who was reportedly supposed to be the guest of honor. She called on the two Jamaican artistes on stage but after 20minutes of delay, it was only Konshens and Chameleon that approached the official. After a few hugs and short political talk, Konshens

45

Chano8. September 2015

asked everyone to clear the stage and ushered in his fellow Jamaican to perform. Although Ugandans didn’t relate to most of his songs, Busy Signal ensured that his performance was worth a mention. His vocal range was on point and the audience loved tracks like “Reggae music again, Missing you, Bedroom bully, Watch out fi dis, one more night and the redone version of gambler. The night also saw Ugandan artistes like Vampino, Fille, Maro, Ragga Dee and A-pass as well as comedians Patrick Idringi Salvado and Alex Muhangi share the stage with the two Jamaicans.

BEBE COOL ATTRACTS TYCOONS, CORPORATES , SOCIALITES AND GAGAMEL FANS

The Friends of Bebe Cool concert goes down as one of the best ever concerts held at Kampala Serena Hotel. With everything in the organisation on point, Bebe Cool kept time and did not keep fans waiting for too long as he embarked on a journey to register history in Uganda music industry with a superb performance

I

t’s not often that Gordon Wavamuno would get out of his chair and dance to a tune; neither would a renowned businessman Tom Mugenga request an artiste to redo a song he already done twice but that is exactly what happened when artiste Bebe Cool held his highly anticipated Friends of Bebe Cool concert last month Graced by millionaires, fans, friends, artistes, comedians and corporate companies, the show was a clear indication that Bebe Cool indeed has come of age. He started his performances at exactly 8:30pm like he had promised and it kicked off with songs mostly off his previous albums like Coccidiosis, Bogolako, Kasepeki, Cease and sickle among others. To prove how talented his family is, Bebe took some time off to call upon his only daughter Beata to

52

Chano8. September 2015

showcase her musical talent and indeed, the child melted the crowd with her piano playing skills. He also took some time to introduce his son son Alpha Thierry Ssali who is a footballer and also got a message from his heavily pregnant wife Zuena Kirema from US who wished him well.

Graced by millionaires, fans, friends, artistes, comedians and corporate companies, the show was a clear indication that Bebe Cool indeed has come of age.

The self-proclaimed big size changed his attire, four times and unlike before when he would put on twice and in things that perturbed the audience, Bebe was on point this time round, dressing in different all-white matching costume three times and putting on a black outfit in the final stages of his performance. Top cultural dancer Annette Nandujja was among the few other artistes who joined Bebe on stage to do their Kamungolo track as well as his manager and artiste Ticktah. Others who performed during the evening included his manager Tickitah, Michael Ross, Ragga Dee, and A-Pass, Among the songs that got people thrilled include Freedom, Anything for love, Mandela, Tokota, Go Mama and the people’s favorite Love you every day all off his Go Mama latest album. He concluded the show 30 minutes past midnight by thanking all his sponsors like Chano8, SMS ONE and Pepsi among others as well as his maid Aisha, fans and everyone who made the show a success.

This has therefore given artistes like David Lutalo and Bebe Cool an upper hand over their competitors because of spending a lot of time with their bands or having a backround of performing with a live band. Today skills and talent is judged by whether you are a good musician by your ability to sing on live band and the fans are now more exposed. Even people in other genres like King Saha, Eddy Kenzo, Bebe Cool, Jose Chameleone and many others have adopted live performances for their concerts. Much as there is growth and appreciation of live music, whether you like it or not, artistes still have to use CDs. Much as we are trying to be like Western countries and copying their ideologies, we have not yet reached their level to demand for value for money. For instance a producer suggests that you should use a guitar or a piano in your song at an extra fee but then an artiste will say no. At times musicians don’t want to rehearse for their live performances because of laziness or lack of proper planning. Take for instance Ziza Bafana who returned from Sweden three days to his concert to prepare for a live band performance. Although the concert was cancelled, it was going to be

For me I don’t think the growth of Jazz can be seen from the increased number of concert goers because most of these Kampala people follow jazz due to band wagon effect just to be seen as part. Very few people understand jazz music properly or even truly love it.

Very few television stations and radio stations play Jazz music like Radio One, Sanyu FM and after the jazz aimed shows, you never hear anything like jazz. We have very great jazz musicians but very few people actually understand jazz music to the core. People say Jazz is corporate but very few corporate listen to Jazz at home or embrace it in their private lives. In short, the truth is live music has always been here for long but faded away in a period of time and now is getting back on the scene. Although Jazz music as a genre, still has a long way to go in being appreciated.

Aided by technology, which is both a blessing and a curse to our music industry, these musicians continue to obtain money by false pretence. Whereas some are actually famous, they have been accused of lacking talent in the first place.

They are no longer swayed by a simple display of raw talent. They attend shows to watch a spectacle. It happened in 2011 when JamaicanAmerican music star, Sean Kingston performed at the Lugogo Cricket Oval. The crowds booed him and rightly so for miming his songs. According to Joe Tabula a musician and music critic, it takes a lot for a musician to perform live broadcasts for low budgets. This is why many musicians do pre-recorded versions disguised as live shows. He brands it theft for one to sing off CD. “I can never understand it when an international artiste flies in and doesn’t perform to a live band. That is robbery. They are lazy and unprofessional. He however admits that a live performance is very expensive especially on the part of the promoters. It is they (promoters) who insist on CD performances since it becomes expensive to pay a musician and their back up bands, security detail and what not. As such, many opt to have a backing track play in the background to minimize on costs. “Touring musicians are expensive, and backing tracks save money by replacing human performers with recordings. In fact, many booking agents of-

fer different packages to promoters and venues depending on how much can be shelled out to put on the show. Musicians offer to play with a full band (expensive) or do vocals over backing tracks (cheaper). Many opt for the latter,” he says. He further explains that there are cases when singing off CD could be acceptable. “First, if you are making a music video since there is no way to perform live and have it turn out sounding good. Secondly, there are singers who dance a lot and perform in the acts. For a singer like Coco Finger or Michael Ross, there is no way during their higher energy songs that they

Some use a performance track, which includes the instruments, backing vocals and hook vocals pre-recorded and playing in the background during a live show. UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL CLUB MANAGER, EVENTS PROMOTER AND FASHION ICON AND Lillian Mbabazi is a Ugandan Afro-Pop and Soul musician. She was a member of girl group Blu*3 and recently featured in season one and two of "Coke Studio Africa. Lillian started doing professional music in 2003 after the Coca Cola Pop star competitions that led to the formation of Blu*3.Together with her Blu3, they went onto win many awards and received international acclaim and recognition. Chano8: Tell us about the journey of Live Music In Uganda. How live music has evolved. Live Music in Uganda started long way back in the early 40s and when I grew up I was inspired by people who were playing live music. I started in 1967 as a singer and I was about 18 years old and I started up a band with some friends of mine who were also equally interested in music. We started off by playing for teenagers from around 2 pm till 8pm at a certain hangout. We went on and jazz was there by the time we started our band but most jazz musicians who were there known were playing in big hotels like Sheraton and were earning a lot from Jazz so we also wanted to be like them and earn from jazz. We started learning different instruments. I chose to learn an instrument called the saxophone and my tutor was the late Mansoor Bulegeya Akiiki who taught me the first note of the saxophone .Things have been changing and in this generation things changed to CD/ Playback music but for us we maintained our live music trend. Chano8: But we have seen again the emergence of many bands is it the re-birth of live music? I am glad the audience and musicians have changed to live music. Many young and talented people are coming into music. We are happy that we have a program that is being organized every year called jazz Safari which is a good program for people who love jazz. We therefore learn more about jazz because it is Fantastic.

86

Chano8. September 2015

Chano8: it seems there is a rebirth of live music and it is becoming more popular in this generation. What is it that you’re doing that is getting people more interested in Live Music? I think people have realized that jazz music is now lively. Music is like a graph. It’s not going straight like CD playback music. Live music has variations in volume for all the instruments and therefore you can control the music as you perform live. Live music isn’t static like playback music. A song sounds different every time you listen to it being performed. You can actually play your feeling in Live music sand people have come to realize this. Live music is lively and so interesting. Chano8: How do you rate Uganda’s Music industry today compared to the earlier 70s? By the time we started, there were awards. We are trying to cope up with the international community. The global village connection has added more value to our industry. Back then we had no corporate companies in Uganda and the population was low and therefore there was limited support from people but now we have more than that. I can’t say that now we are at the top but at least we are somewhere. Right now someone can

go for a show and if asked how the show was, most respond with comments like “People were many”. Chano8: So how did you get involved in Live bands? I started playing in a band called Thunderbirds. I then joined Cranes band in 1969 till 1974. Then when the band split we formed Afrigo band. Chano8: Do you have any upcoming projects you are working on in Afrigo band? Definitely we are composing many songs for our fans. We are going to celebrate Afrigo at 40 years later this year. I am also soon releasing a solo album called Katonda Tumusinzenga. It’s a gospel album. Chano8: You have seemingly seen some upcoming live bands and performers. What is your opinion about them? They are doing well and are promising but they are not practicing a lot. There are two different things. There is practice and rehearsal. Practice has to be very regular and should be done a lot. Most of these performers only practice abit prior to presentations and then rehearse shortly. This affects their perfor-

mances in terms of speed, accuracy and coordination. Upcoming live performers need to understand that live music is all about quality so they need to put more time in practice and rehearsal to perfect their performance skills. Chano8: Can you tell us more about the Qwela Junction and the Sax Aces? The Qwela junction is something good because they involve different and I was given a chance to perform. It is a taking place this Sunday 30th August at Serena Hotel. It’s a good thing because we musicians in this genre of music should cooperate in order to be more successful. There is no reason why we should fight or quarrel with each other. It’s actually pointless to do that so performing at Qwela Junction’s Sax Aces is a good friendly gesture and you should expect a superb performance from us. Any last words to the Chano8 readers and your fans out there? I thank Chano8 for being very dedicated in promoting local talent regardless of which genre. gandans are at a point where they are starting to experiment with different music genres and Jazz is one of them. Jazz and live music in have been receiving a lot of media attention recently. Not so far back, when people talked about Jazz music, the first name that came to mind was Kenny G. Today, Kampala nightlife’s is painted with theme nights at various clubs and hotels and some of the most popular nights are jazz nights. We have people who can tell different Jazz sub genres; from contemporary jazz synonymous with artistes like Earl Klugh, Groover Washington George Benson, Dave Koz, to urban and soul Jazz, they have shown awareness. This awareness according to TShaka Mayanja is a step in the right direction. “Jazz is receiving a lot of time and space in both the print and electronic media in Uganda these days. This is a good thing and write ups are becoming more accurate,” he notes. TShaka reminisces that five years ago, Jazz was marketed so badly, it was described as music for the expatriates, the show-offs and the super-rich. Today, jazz has become a social event! This is evidenced by crowds that throng the annual Jazz safari, now in its 8thedition. He says that whenever an artist played an instrument, most especially a horn, people called it Jazz. “Kenny G is the most

The jazz safari is the brain child of Jazz trend setter, Tshaka Mayanja and Radio One’s Elijah Kitaka. The festival brings together great international and local jazz talent annually. It started out as the sizzling jazz safari in 2008 featuring artists like Eric Marienthal, Oscar Seaton, Tshaka Mayanja, Michael Ouma and many others. them better and relate with them more easily. People have also actually acquired a taste for live music and now want more of it so they are willing to pay for shows whereas 10-15 years ago you couldn’t charge 50,000/= for a show, it has now become a fair amount for a live concert. So those are some of the factors that have changed the scope of live music. Any upcoming projects as an individual or with Qwela band? Qwela band is working on its 3rd album and as an individual, I put out an EP 5 months ago of my own music also coupled with a few other people but under my title. I plan on following that up with a personal album. We will look into doing some videos as Qwela band because videos have become a good vehicle for music. We are also looking at doing a concert in the future as Qwela band alone.

Any message to our Chano8 readers? I would like to ask people out there to support Ugandan music and therefore inspire people across the world to embrace Ugandan culture and therefore export our culture elsewhere. For example, Kenzo had Americans singing Sitya Loss and this was really amazing so we should be doing more of that so that we can actually grow our economy and also use creative arts to pave way for the breakout of other sectors of our economy like manufacturing and agriculture. All this can’t be executed without the support and loyalty of our fans therefore we need them more than ever by our side to support us so Uganda can grow in all aspects.

MEET UGANDA'S TOP FEMALE SAXOPHONIST

MoRoots "multi-talented instrumentalist singer-song Writer "

MoRoots real names Maureen Rutabingwa is a multi-talented instrumentalist singer-song Writer who is currently Uganda's best female saxophonist. She performs with the Qwela Band as a lead singer and Saxophonist and is a fan favourite not only because of her amazing music skills and talent but also because of her eye-catching and elaborate sense of style particularly the Mohawks that have become iconic. Who is Mo Roots? And why Mo Roots? I am a female musician who loves music and I am a multi-instrumentalist. My name is Maureen Rutabengwa and Roots comes in with my love for staying true to my African roots and heritage. Therefore Mo Rots is a combination of my name and love for African culture. When did you start music professionally? I have been playing with Qwela band for the last 3 years and in that time, I have also started my own band called Soul Deep. My individual band as Mo roots has grown to a higher level. So what inspired you to get into jazz music especially saxophone. I started in P7 and my music teacher thought I could do it really well so she introduced me to it and I ended up loving it. about jazz music. That is where I really grew my love and appreciation for Jazz. My love for jazz really grew while I was in University. About the evolution of Jazz. It seems to be growing and expanding. What is it that you are doing differently? People’s minds have been opened up to Jazz music and it’s because we are doing different types of music that are fused with jazz and people are starting to appreciate the different sound and the work and musicality. The love for Jazz is really growing and this could be the perfect justification for the evolution of jazz in this generation. You are a lady in a male dominated industry. Are you comfortable in this position? I honestly find it extremely comfortable because am representing for the ladies and I

wish there were more ladies. I feel very confident and am here as members to equally contribute just like the other guys. I don’t see myself as just one girl amongst many guys. We are all musicians and we all bring something very special to the table.

It is basically made up of Qwela Band in conjunction with 7 of Kampala’s finest saxophone players like Moses Matovu, Isaiah Katumwa, Brian Mugenyi, Joseph Sax, Happy K and so we will be showcasing the beauty and all the different things the saxophone can do. This collaboration of Qwela band and friends takes place

I do that during the day and sometimes over the weekend. Where do you see yourself in the coming 5-10 years? I see myself as an accomplished musician and as an inspiration to many girls who want to pick up musical instruments and start playing. I think I can be that beam of light that inspires other girls. Rising Star

BRIAN MUGENYI

Brian Mugenyi is an accomplished Musician, Composer, Singer and song writer who came to the lime light after working with some of Uganda's leading bands Qwela and Code 9 until he decided to go solo in 2012. He started music at a tender age of 8 where he started by learning how to play different instruments from his local church and later perfected the art at the Africa institute of music where he dedicated five years to perfecting his lifetime passion and talent in music and majored in classical piano and minoring in Saxophone. Who is Brian Mugenyi? Give us a hint at your background. I am a Ugandan saxophonist. I have been a musician since I was 8 years old. . I grew up in Bwaise and that is where I started playing instruments. I was raised by my grandmother who was and still is a church leader. I had always been a church boy playing instruments in church and the instruments were stored in our house and that’s how I got exposure to most instruments and learnt how to play whenever I could. I started playing the bass guitar in 2004 and in 2008 I joined a music school called Africa Institute of Music in Muyenga. I did a course in music for 5 years and I still plan on going back to pursue a masters’ degree soon. This is where I learnt a lot and I majored in classical piano and minored in Saxophone. In 2009, I joined Qwela band and then in 2010 I joined Code 9 Band. I then later went solo in 2012. In 2009, I went to South Korea for intensive training and that is where my saxophone technique improved a lot. In 2013 I did my first album entitled “Take Time”. With that album I’ve toured a lot. I went to Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia. I am working on my second album entitled ‘Dawn’. It is a 15 track album I recorded in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. I hope my fans will love it.

Tell us about the evolution of Jazz music in Uganda. What are you people doing differChano8. September 2015

ently that is skyrocketing Jazz music to the top? I believe jazz music has changed. Live music has picked up before like in the days of Moses Matovu when live music was very popular in the country. It had recently dropped abit but it’s picking up again and rising partly because the quality of music has changed. The young generation is doing live music in a wiser format. They have put a lot of effort into learning and mastering their instruments. The marketing strategies for shows have also been greatly improved to the extent that shows can now be marketed to wide spectrum of music lovers. A live show can currently be easily marketed to a reggae or RnB music lover which is a good thing for us. Live music has evolved and changed and people easily pick interest in new and innovative musical concepts and I think this is the evolution point of Uganda’s live music.

Many people get it twisted when it comes to genres. What genre do you major in? The music I do isn’t entirely Jazz. I have elements of Jazz in my music but my music is a fusion of African traditional elements with Western music elements. I love to do Afro –Pop, Electronic Dance music, Soul and RnB so I write music from all those categories. I can’t say am a jazz musician but I don’t only play saxophone.

to Sri Lanka to do a concert. That way, People are starting to realize that Ugandan Music is growing so I think in 5 years time it’s going to be so enormous.

Tell us about the upcoming Qwela Junction Sax Aces.

Many local artistes in mainstream music are performing on CD. As opposed to live music, what do you think about CD performances?

Joe had this concept of having different musicians coming together once in a while to perform while backed by Qwela Band just like the recent Guitar Maestros. I think Sax Aces is about saxophone players from Uganda coming together to play while backed by Qwela band. That is why it is called Qwela Junction Sax Aces. I am going to do 3 songs and also collaborate with other artistes.

In most cases, setting up a live performance is more costly compared to CD performance which is a cheaper option. Most artistes opt for playback performance because they find it costly to cover the costs of setting up a live band and at times one requires a lot of practice, time and dedication to rehearse and properly execute a live band performance.

In the coming 5-10 years, where do you see live music in Uganda?

I have previously performed in CD and it’s still a good performance. Entertainment is all about putting some creativity to work in order to have a good performance. You can do that with or without a band but if you have the resources to do it you should.

It’s going to grow so fast. 10 years is a long way and people all over Africa are recognizing that there is talent in East Africa. I am doing a tour in many more African countries. I have been invited

Her View

Relationship

I am a twenty-year-old girl at campus and I’m a bit confused. My boyfriend is two years older than me although he is broke and has no money. He has ambition and is good at studies.

There is a professor who wants me too and although he is married with grown kids, he has money and has been giving me things my boyfriend cannot provide. I love my boyfriend but I have needs, which he cannot take care of. I don’t love the professor but he promises to take care of me if I become his woman on the side. His only condition is that I leave my boyfriend and I think I will do just that. I’m I making the wrong decision?

ell this is a classic and this dilemma has been around since way, I mean way back. Just saying it is as old as the time humanity discovered barter trade. Hehe. I am going to try and not be a prude even if its against my principles seeing as am married but you are young, too young to be making a commitment to anyone one of them. At the age of twenty, you are starting to experience life why would you want to be locked down to a guy. At university you are supposed to get more than the educational experience you are supposed to party, be silly and maybe (just maybe) get into a little trouble. You don’t owe any of them any answer I am actually thinking they could both have a role to play in your life. I understand it is not easy to live comfortably without a job or a ‘sponsor’ so I don’t judge you for even considering it. I am sure 80% of the girls at campus are doing it. My advice is be smart about it understand the kind of relationship you’re getting into. He is not going to marry you, he won’t hold you at night or be there to soothe you through the night No! All he wants is sex and a young pretty girl that enlarges his ego. That is your role in his life. Anyone can say ‘I love u’ they don’t have to mean it. Don’t be persuaded by

Chano8. September 2015

his romantic gestures understand he is using you so why not use him too, get all the things you need, a car, rent free apartment and spending money. Again I must emphasize side chicks need to be clear about their role in a married man’s life. Don’t get it mixed up. Now the boyfriend who is in school with you is also someone you should be with. These brainy guys with a lot of ambition are the ones that bloom into the rich married guys that have it together and later on will be picking up side chicks because he has a little more money to spend on useless habits. At school he is great to be with because he will give you the emotional relationship you need the support you will require as you persue your education, better yet he might be the one that gives you that extra push to your educational finish line. He will be reliable at all times so yes am all for the ‘broke and ambitious’ boyfriend because with him you will end up being the wife, the queen with the keys to the mansion rather than the side chick picking up lose change. Bottom line is Who are you? What kind of girl are you? Are you ok juggling both men? Are you the serious type that is looking to put up roots now or you are still having fun? Either way, life has presented you with a buffet of choices. You can even mix it up. It’s all upto you.

You don’t owe any of them any answer I am actually thinking they could both have a role to play in your life. I understand it is not easy to live comfortably without a job or a ‘sponsor’ so I don’t judge you for even considering it.

His Take

ell I do sympathize with you on one hand and on the other a part of me wants to say you should know better. There is an old saying that runs like ‘all that glitters is not gold.’ You boyfriend may not have money now but clearly you do know that that is a state that can change in a matter of months or a few years. Love should be the determinant in this case. You love him and that my dear should be enough for now. He is not working just like you, so expecting him to have lots of money is not only unfair it is being a bit short sighted. You said that he has ambition and he is good at his books and I think that for now those are promising qualities to look for in a mate. If he didn’t attend class and wasted his time sports betting or engaged in some other worthless activity then you would have reason to worry. But he is not. Let me let you in on a little secret. The majority of relationships that have ended into marriage start at university. You may be passing this young man up now but believe me in the near future when you are looking to settle down, you may regret this when no worthy suitors show up. He has the potential of being your husband in the future keep that in mind. We have weighed the options with you boyfriend. Lets do the same with the professor for matters of fairness. The possibility of this gentleman taking you on as a wife are zero in a million years because that would raise eyebrows with his peers due to the age difference. You haven’t said how old this guy is but most professors are at least past forty years. Does this man love you? Probably not. You see I can bet on the fact that this man simply wants you for carnal reasons period. He is attracted to you and simply wants a piece of that. But when he rubber hits the road, I doubt how genuine these affections are. He has a wife at home and children and you merely will be an occasional distraction that he can call on when the humdrum of life gets uninteresting. You probably will have to keep this relationship secret since he probably will be exposed and you may be embarrassed canoodling around with a man fit to be your father. You also have to ask yourself whether you are the first student that he is trying to have a clandestine liaison with or if there have been many more in the past. You see men of this caliber rarely wake up one morning and decide to date their students. It

You haven’t said how old this guy is but most professors are at least past forty years. is a habit that they have been cultivating for many years and granted, he is likely to have some experience in this field. Finally I want to ask you why you would consider taking on somebody else’s husband as your man. This I’m sure is not how your mother raised you to be and trust me this is not an arrangement that you are worth investing in. Money never satisfies and in the end you will end up with a bunch a toys but sense of guilt and question your self worth. Focus on studying hard and this will bear fruit in the long run. Do not leave your boyfriend for this old gentleman. You may have to lie in the bed that you have made after all. Good luck. May 2014

any people secretly hate their jobs and end up feeling trapped with no place to go. Interestingly most people think their friends jobs are way more rewarding than their own in a typical the grass seems greener on the other side scenario. But this is far from the truth. You friends are probably envying your job just as much as you envy theirs. When you look at work as means to make yourself better, you will find it more satisfying aside from the experience you gain. Learn new skills It is almost by default that most jobs bring with them Internet access. The beauty of the Internet is that there are thousands of online courses you

can take that will equip you with new skills. Most workplaces support their staff to improve on their skills provided they are still able to deliver on their core deliverables. The list of things you can learn are endless. From web design, to writing, to algebra and programming, you would be spoilt for choice. Learning a new skill enables you to gain from your job. If you do this then are you are adding value to yourself and if an opportunity presents itself you are better prepared to take it up. Network with different people. The workplace is a melting pot of people which different skills and educational orientations. On a daily basis you are interacting with clients and other personnel and from this can stem career networks that could just give you your big break.

COFFE BREAK

I know someone that worked in a bank and they got into contact with a successful businessmen in the city that banked with them. From this stemmed a working relationship and he eventually floated a business idea to the guy that he was willing to help finance. They started a venture that turned out to be a remarkably successful up to this day. Without the background of a workplace, it is almost impossible to meet such people. Rise up in the ranks. We all want to be somewhere in life and the better that your position in the company helps you achieve this, the more contented you generally feel. A workplace provides enormous opportunities for growth and career advancement. According to Robert Mwesigye an

HR consultant in private practice, working hard and demonstrating great delivery in day-to-day assignments can bear fruit for you. Promotions are given to individuals that are deserving and should you choose this path, you can rise up in ranks in a number of years. Remember that nothing good comes easy and may probably take time of continued exertion on your part. Join the work saving sacco. Most workplaces have saving saccos and a few employees have discovered the true blessing that these provide. I know a guy who diligently saved with a work sacco for a year and was able to get a loan to buy his first car. You may think that there’s nothing remarkable about that but

this guy got the loan at an interest rate so low he only paid Shs 500,000 as interest after two years. The same loan taken from a bank would have attracted an interest of over Shs2,500,000 after the same period. With a work sacoo, you are able to develop yourself by acquiring loans at interest rates so low you cannot get that kind of service else where. Another man I work with used the same sacco to buy his first plot of land and proceeded to build his house. While work can be draining feel vain sometimes, these few ideas can help you make better choices regarding your employment and catapult you to where you need to be. Good luck!

KALIBATANYA Juliana Kanyomozi

J

uliana Kanyomozi is one big diva you can never rule out from the music scene. She has gone through some tough times in recent times but trust me she has bounced back stronger with some decent songs already dominating airwaves. Her song ‘Woman has become some kind of anthem for women related affairs.

She has followed that with some promising projects too and one such is ‘Kalibatanya’ a typical Juliana song with all the RnB and Afro soul fusions she is known for in full play. Done by the ever reliable producer Crouch at Jeeb Records, the audio screams ‘Juliana is back’ Done in her usual mid tempo rhythm, the song can pass as a sit and listen type because of the strong love message in it or can be a strong danceable club banger as well. The music video strikes the viewer straight at the intro as Juliana’s innocent gaze sets a magnetic field that keeps the viewer strongly glued as the wait for what happens next hightens the excitement and expectation and because of the carefully planned smooth interplay and flawless scene transitions the songs tends to wind up so fast. It is only the masculine dancers who can awaken the viewer from the slumber and fantasy world. Directed by Meddie Menz at Mirage concepts, the video’s crystal clear picture gives it a pass even before other technical aspects that make a video tick, are looked into. For starters I always look at the story-line to try and connect the audio with the video and see what message the artiste is trying to convey and how effective it is in this world where technological advancement has made things a little bit easier for the directors and in Juliana’s case, she chooses a simple concept of singing directly to the viewer while occasionally bring an image in the background of a couple that hangs out on a date which starts with a shopping spree. Her makeup is on point as usual complimenting well with her dresses and the gold accessories. It is a song that can get one grooving or simply glued to the screen if you are the type who likes the visual impressions.

And Radio enters the mix with some lovely combination of poetic words and rhymes at the hard beats pound on before Weasel cools things down to introduce the climax that peaks with a go down ‘Paka Chini’ session. Some lovely keyboard works from Washington and we are off. The song is basically a club banger which sets the party moods rolling. Ugandans are already dancing to the tunes as te talented stars have given them something a bit different but sweet to enjoy.
