he is the Princess of Africa and she is a darling of Uganda and commands a big fan base here but more importantly she loves Uganda with all her body and soul and loves the people of Uganda. So what exactly keeps this relationship flourishing to the extent that, one of Africa’s greatest artistes Yvonne Chaka Chaka keeps coming back to the Pearl of Africa? Well that’s the subject of discussion for another day but for now, let’s go back to what brought Chaka Chaka back this time round. The princess of Africa whose music rocked the airwaves in the 80’s and 90’s was in town as the chief guest at the ‘I am Kansiime’ One Woman comedy show at Imperial Royale Hotel. This was Anne Kansiime's biggest night and therefore, the guest of honor had to measure up. So Chaka Chaka who did not only still look charming and sweet, but also looked so fresh and elegant as ever made a grand appearance. Anne Kansiime the host and main act of the show

had invited her as guest of honor at the show and she gladly honoured the invitation having met in the U.S and South Africa in previous engagements. The show kicked-off immediately after she had taken her seat with her entourage and the fans itched to have a piece of her as soon as the MC announced her presence in the crowd and immediately brought life to the well attended show. There was some warmth and love in the air as Kansiime took to the stage to entertain her fans and cracked them up with joke after joke as Chaka Chaka laughed her heart out and could not hold back her tears as Kansiime narrated her story of growing up from a poor family in Kigezi. Kansiime was a dynamic performer, entertaining her fans through music dance and drama which she puctuated with cameo appearances by her Funfactory family. She crowned it all by cracking the fans with stand up comedy where she vividly painted her life's journey to stardom.

Her first move was to hand over a special gift to Kansiime whom she confessed to being a big fan of amidst cheers and a graceful dance from her. And when she was done handing over the beautiful necklace, she encouraged fellow women to work hard and emulate Kansiime and Ugandans to support their own talent. However, she drew the loudest applause when she asked the MC who happened to come from Zimbabwe to go back and tell his president Robert Mugabe aka Uncle Bob to take leave and rest. "When you go back, tell Mugabe to rest & start writing books. I love Mugabe & I love Museveni but they should not keep here for long – it’s their time to go write books. Tell them to leave." She said amidst wild cheers from the crowd. She also thanked Captain Mike Mukula for introducing her to Uganda after he first brought her here for her maiden visit and performance. She invited him to join her on stage as they did the ‘Umkomboti’ dance together and described him as a ladies’ charm.

MANYA CONCERT '16

DAVID LUTALO ARTISTE CEMENTS PLACE

wondEr' NOW once thought to be a 'one hit SEEN AS A STAR with many hits to his name

F

or those who had doubted the ability of David Lutalo to rise to the top artistes' list in Uganda, you were wrong. Lutalo proved his worth at his Manya concert by pulling a record crowd at Hotel Africa Parking space that shocked and excited him in equal measure. The dimunitive singer who came to prominence at only 19 years in 2007 with his blockbuster hit song ‘Kapapaala’, was being fronted as a one hit wonder by some sections of the media then. He however hang in and gave it a push that paid off with more hit songs that dominated the airwaves and went on to release 4 albums Yamba, Gyetugenda, Kapaapala, Mapenzi, Far Away that climaxed with his major concert for ‘Akantu’ that attracted a massive crowd at Hotel Africana in 2014 which some critics still counted as a one off. The Luwero born Afro-pop singer did not however rest on his laurels and allow the success of his first album launch and successive hit songs cloud his focus as he went back to the drawing board or rather sketch book and in 2014 released hit after hit that unofficially made him the top artiste of the year with songs like, Pretty, Far Away, Nandikulese Mukyalo, Hellena ft Goodlyfe and Mubbi Bubbi ft Maro.

24

Chano8. May - July 2016

So after putting his critics and haters in their place what was next on the agenda for Lutalo was a massive concert to send a strong everlasting message that would cement his place among the Crème de la Crème of Uganda’s music industry and oh boy did he do it in style. Not only did the fans that included popular Kampala politicians and local businessmen turn up in big numbers, they were also visibly excited throughout the concert. The father of two stepped up on stage at around 9.45pm after a flurry of performances from curtain raisers that were limited to only 1 song per artiste. He had assembled a live band to accompany him on the well constructed, spacious and well-lit stage courtesy of Silk events and boy, the sound was on point too as his dancers warmed up the stage for him. When he finally appeared looking calm and fresh in a military black suit, he took the crowd on a musical journey that included his old songs like ‘Kapapaala’ to the more recent ones like ‘Mubbi Bubbi’ where he was joined on stage by Maro. The fans sang along to his sweet melodies. He left the fans disappointed and yearning for more as he could not perform his popular song ‘Ujuwe’ because of time and security concerns.

ast year’s Nile Gold Jazz Safari was an evening of pompous glitz and glamour as Jazz enthusiasts congregated at Kampala Serena’s Victoria Ball room for an evening of smooth Saxo-Jazz-funk and sultry soul ballads at the annual Nile Gold Jazz Safari from celebrated international artistes; Saxophonist Kirk Whalum and RnB crooner Karyn White. The two did not disappoint as the classy mostly high end crowd was kept on its feet through-

ASK RWAMITI

What IS YOUR TAKE ON THE 'BOYCOTT' OF TUBONGA NAAWE ARTISTES? Miles Rwamiti is a presenter on NTV’s program ‘Kona ne NTV’.He is an authority on music and Ugandan celebrity lifestyles. Every month we select questions from the public about the music industry for him to answer.

ASK RWAMITI

I

t is true there is a call for a boycott on the artistes and some people are implementing it especially in Kampala and other neighbouring towns. But I think Ugandans are now moving away from the boycott. The boycott has mostly been in the central region with a few artistes affected but up country it is not there. Even the story of Goodlyf being thrown out of a concert in Dubai is a hoax and propaganda. But for me I think it is about the music and trust me if an artiste has good music regardless of which side he or she is politically, people will always turn up for his/her show. The Goodlyfe are having a concert soon but trust me people are going to show up. For me this is what I think about the whole saga, artistes were making money just like any other person that’s why they jumped on the band wagon while others who didn’t like it like Kiwewa, Walugaka abstained but the question is are they making money? However, some sections of the Tubonga Naawe artistes genuinely supported NRM and a section of the masses was not happy with them especially Bebe Cool and Chame-

leone who openly supported NRM and Museveni yet the likes of Haruna Mubiru who was also part of them have moved on with Mubiru holding a sold-out concert recently. Ronald Mayinja and Stecia Mayanja have big songs so am sure they will make it big. There were also artistes who made money off the situation and I am very sure a big artiste who supports FDC asked for a lot of money to join Tubonga Naawe but was not successful. So this thing has been motivated by money and was about who was making what amount of money. There was a strom when Bebe Cool cancelled his annual Easter show when some perople

However, right now the storm is settling and in a short time, people will get back to their normal businesses and a few artistes who were affected by the so called boycott are getting back to work because some of them like Stecia Mayanja have produced good music and have hit songs as we speak and are organising concerts. Let’s get this straight, an artiste can only have a concert if he has good music whether you are in Tubonga Naawe or not. The Goodlyf crew has a good album that’s why they are confident to enough to plan concert at Africana Hotel on May 13 2016 and believe me or not, they will pull it off. For me it is about the music and good music will always be appreciated. In music that's what it comes down to!

THE HOVERBOARD CRAZE

Walking Is getting old: Celebs turn to futuristic toys For celebrities, walking per se is a thing of the past. Thanks to the envy-inducing nature of social media, many have fallen for self-balancing scooters like the hover boards and Segway machines just to make a statement.

G

oodlyfe crew of Radio and Wizo have performed off hover boards, Bobi Wine recently bought his wife one and more remarkably Haruna Mubiru fell off one at Namboole stadium as he tried to show off. Jose Chameleone owns several hover boards but he upped his game with a grand statement when he bought the Nike Air Mag, back to the future.

Additionally, a fully charged Phunkeeduck will travel anyone under 136 kilograms for 10 miles. It may sound ridiculous, but it actually looks like a lot of fun. During the NBA Finals, J.R. Smith of the Cleveland Cavaliers introduced the PhunkeeDuck to millions when he rode into the locker room before Game 6. In recent months, Justin Bieber posted an Instagram video of himself zooming around a living room on scooters.

The investment reportedly set him back by Uganda shillings 85million. Cue the snide remarks from the detractors. “Why doesn’t Chameleone buy more land or something? Isn’t he mad to spend sh85m on just two pairs of shoes?” They queried on social media after he posted the new silver grey and black with gold Nike Air Mag shipped by DHL. The incensed Chameleone retorted “For those of you advising me about financial discipline, give me a chance to advise you too. I can’t compromise on my desires. We live once,” he wrote. Interestingly, only 1500 pairs were made and proceeds for these shoes go to Hollywood actor Michael J. Fox’s Parkinson’s disease charity. Apparently, Chameleone speaks for many current generation celebrities. These futuristic self-balancing scooters and shoes are the newest status-affirming accessory for young musicians, athletes and celebrities who have embraced the celebrity trend. “Everyone loves a new gadget, and when you’re a celebrity, you have just a little bit more pocket change to throw at the coolest electronic items when they hit the market. And I’m talking about the future of transpor-

tation, because walking is getting old,” Justin Beiber said in an interview. Unlike Ugandan celebrities who are still getting to grips with the Segway, Beiber and his fellow Hollywood A-listers have moved a notch higher. They are now rolling with the PhunkeeDuck — the skateboard-like gadget that puts the Segway to shame. And Hollywood A-listers love it. Mostly because they can afford it; it costs $1,499.99. (Sh6m) With a maximum speed of 12 mph, the PhunkeeDuck allows users to wheel around without moving their feet. The device weighs only 8 kilogrammes according to the PhunkeeDuck website.

These latest battery-powered toys come with alternative fancy names like IO Hawk, UWheel and MonoRover R2 and they still use the technology used by Segway although it is of an advanced level. The original two-wheel scooter (and United States patent holder) is called Hovertrax and it retails at $1,495 (shs5.8m) although the Chinese factories now offer a similar version at $350 (sh1.1m) “It’s the hot thing out right now, everybody wants one,” said Andre Drummond, the 7-foot center on the Detroit Pistons, who owns several and used one while bowling a strike, a video of which is on Instagram. “It just makes you not want to walk anywhere,” he revealed. NANA KAGGA EXCLUSIVE

Interview

Nana Kagga THE DIVA BEHIND UGANDA'S MODERN FILM REVOLUTION

Nana Kagga is a force of nature, breaking barriers with her pen and presence. As an Engineer, writer, producer, mother, entrepreneur and wife, she excels. From the TV screen from shows such as ‘CSI New York’, ‘Hitchhiker’, ‘He is not that into u’ and ‘Star trek’ to behind the camera writing and producing quality Ugandan films. Under her whip she is sculpting the next generation of global Ugandan actors. Chano8: Who is Nana Kagga? I am Nana McPherson Kagga, a wife, mother, daughter, entrepreneur, actor, director and an all round dreamer. I also work at Tullow Oil as a petroleum engineer.

Chano8: You do a lot of things. What was your main influence behind all this? Many people settle for one career path but I chose to be different. I personally believe limits like fear are just an illusion. I tend to indulge in my passions and also identify things that I think I could do better. The reason I do for example petroleum engineering is because I did a degree in chemical engineering and I have worked in the oil and gas industry so I found myself better suited when Uganda started producing oil and this is an industry that has a lot of potential to change this country’s future. I do directing and script writing because people live in my head.

Chano8: About your role in the film he’s not that into you. The way I got that role was very hilarious. I had just returned from a night out while in Las Vegas and a friend of mine called me up and asked me to get to downtown L.A and I made up a lot of excuses to not show up. I told him I had malaria or something and he insisted saying the casting director liked my look. I actually went there in my pyjamas and everyone was looking at me with a funny face. When my turn came for the screening, the casting director just burst out into laughter and we both started laughing. She then thanked me for coming in for the screening. I left awaiting her call and 3 days later, I got a call saying I had got the part. That was it.

Chano8: Background I was an attention seeking kid when I was young and I loved dancing, drama, singing and all in all entertaining. Even when a visitor came home, I would jump onto the table and dance for them. I man-

38

aged to convince the drama teacher to let me do drama by bribing her with my sandwiches. I was also really an entrepreneur while growing up. I still am. To me drama is about escaping to another world. Its like when you feel powerless in your everyday life and you get to become a superhero. Drama give you a chance to confront your sadness. I would get As in some subjects, but when it came to others, I got low grades. I always liked choosing what I want to do.

Chano8:You have done several commercials/adverts for big companies. How did that start out? I was in Mexico and was working on weapons research for the US government and this creepy guy walked up to me, introduced himself as Steve Jobs. He asked if I would like to be on the billboard of the new IPod. I asked to think about it and later gave him a call about it, auditioned against 20 other black girls. I got the role and from then on, I was the black African girl on billboards and commercials for companies like Mc Donalds, Pepsi, KFC, and countless others. I started featuring in music videos too and then series like CSI: New York which I auditioned against Lupita Nyongo’ and got the role. So what started as IPod billboard ended in all the rest.

Chano8:Is Nana Hills sort of an alter ego? Yeah, (laughs) it actually is one. To be a successful actor/ ess, you can’t take yourself as you are and expose yourself in set with all your vulnerabilities. When you take on an alter ego you have created, you can break down doors and you feel invincible. People don’t end up judging and criticizing you as Nana Kagga. They judge Nana Hills so you personally remain intact and unscathed.

Chano8 NANA KAGGA EXCLUSIVE

Chano8: Tell us about the Beneath The Lies Series. Beneath The Lies was born when me and Cedric Babu were seated at my verandah chilling and were talking about how we can bring something new to the Ugandan series which were limited in content at the time. We wanted something that had intrigue, suspense and a lot more and we noticed that people in Kampala would do anything to drive a Range Rover, have that Brazilian weave and go out to all the nice places but in doing that lots of people are selling their souls so I thought to myself, what if I write this script of a psychological thriller that portrays all this?

Chano8: What’s your vision for Beneath The Lies? We had a home on Urban before but we are not there anymore so my vision for it is to make it a web series that doesn’t limit audience so someone doesn’t have to tune in at 8:00pm to watch it but can do so at their own convenience on their laptop or phone and wherever they are. This is to fulfil our aim of releasing the content to a bigger audience. Beneath The Lies is a series made in Uganda for the world and we aim at breaking boundaries. We have a very dedicated cast that loves what they do and can withstand the long and hectic filming hours and work relentlessly for result not just for the money but with passion. Like Flavia who is dedicated and can make it to set on time, get the job done and not complain same as Salvado who at times is flying in from a comedy show somewhere and gets on set as soon as he touches down while still doing what he does to perfection. With this we are bringing to you a well executed piece of work that is to break boundaries.

Chano8: Rate the Ugandan film industry in its current state. The industry is still lacking. We need to pay people what they are worth and learn to think outside the box. We have very few script writers in Uganda who actually think outside the box. The industry will grow though its still in its infancy. We as Ugandans should challenge ourselves and urge each other to bring out quality content otherwise if we continue to watch crap, we will never progress.

Chano8: Any final words to those out there looking to have careers like yours? Confront your fears. Its just that simple. Just open your mind and say impossible is just a word. We are powerful beyond limit but people just don’t know that. We shouldn’t condition ourselves to accept average and conventionality. Your dreams will look impossible to those with a small mind and you need to shake off negative people and expose your mind to the people that tell you that everything is possible. Success might not come today, tomorrow or next year but you will get there. That’s when everyone will believe you have their answers on how to succeed and they forget that there is no single path to success. Your dream tells you what to do. When you wake up in the morning, imagine you had one more hour to live, what would you do with it?

STUDIO DIARY

Studio Diary

never been loved before Who is Maurice Kirya?

MAURICE KIRYA IS ONE OF UGANDA'S MOST SOUGHT AFTER ELIGIBLE BACHELORS. HE IS A SINGER, SONGWRITER, BUSINESSMAN AND ACTOR. HIS NEW SONG 'NEVER BEEN LOVED BEFORE' IS ALREADY DOING WELL ACROSS EAST AFRICA.HE TELLS US THE SECRET BEHIND THE SUCCESS OF THE SONG IN THIS EDITION OF STUDIO DIARY.

50

I am a musician, actor and businessman. I have been in music for many years. I started when I was 14 years old and am now 30 years old. All I can say about myself is I'm the real sh*t. (laughs)

Personality. Those who know me as a musician find me very reserved while my personal friends think I say some of the most hilarious things. I guess am half me and half Vampino.

INSPIRATION I wanted to write a song that was more of Pop but also very easy on the ears and anyone can sing along to it easily and also get the topic right away. I wrote the song 2 years before I actually recorded it. In the process of recording it, we wanted to find beats that people were rocking to at the moment but also bring back the soul of the music that people were rocking to back in the day and show Ugandans that as much as I am very experimental, I still got my head screwed on tight for RnB. The first time most people heard the song, it changed

Chano8. May - July 2016

STUDIO DIARY Chano8 and the same way I am on stage, I am just like that in the studio so challenges encountered are very minimal when one has that kind of spirit while recording. I just put on those headphones and just start singing. I could sing for up to 8 minutes and my guys are like you have just given us 4 songs. So we end up keeping some verses for other songs. We recorded that song at the time when we were doing the Mwoyo album and did so mostly on late nights because am always free at night.

their perception of Maurice Kirya’s music. It was a different kind of music.

Story behind the song? I have fallen in love many times but just like anybody else, I feel the same way about any relationship. Its like when you are trying to get a girl, the first thing a girl is going to get in her head is that she wont trust you that much because she thinks you are just trying to get the cookie which is sometimes true. (giggles) This song talks about a guy putting himself in a very vulnerable state whereby you are actually in love and you really want to make it work. This comes to a point whereby you can’t actually be poetic enough to explain it to her but its as easy as keeping it simple and saying that I will make you feel like you’ve never been loved before. The song actually took me about a night to work on then I took it to my friends, sang it for them and we brainstormed about it. The song was dedicated to someone at the point I wrote it and by the time it came out, it just didn’t suit her anymore. She was a beautiful girl I was dating called Jemimah. When I wrote the song, it wasn’t actually for her but I ended up writing it for her because I could easily relate to her.

Recording the song As usual, I go into the studio, sing the song and we start debating about it with the team. I bring up ideas on what I want the song to be like and sometimes they love it while at times they disagree. Recording the song plus the album took probably 6 weeks. We had to bring in people to play all the different instruments you hear in the song. I have a team. We call ourselves the ghosts because these are people that are always in public but nobody really knows them and they understand me and the brand. Above all these are people that I trust because they are very smart and I have worked with them for 8 years. I did the song from BlackSmith studio in Nabulagala. It was produce by a producer called Sam Bisaso.

Challenges We mainly had technical challenges in the production whereby we wanted to achieve certain tones with a certain instrument and it was kind of hard getting that right.

The Video

The song actually took me about a night to work on then I took it to my friends, sang it for them and we brainstormed about it. The song was dedicated to someone at the point I wrote it and by the time it came out, it just didn’t suit her anymore.

One of the challenges we normally have as artistes is actually getting your head in the game and focus or else you will be just another person singing a song. You actually have to stop thinking that this song is going to be big and is going to make me a lot of money eventually. Its like when I get on stage am a beast. I don’t think anyone can take on what I do on stage. I actually forget about everything else around me and get down to business. Regardless of what deal I have with you, I forget about the money, my problems

The video was shot and directed by Enos Olik, we met a couple of times in Nairobi and discussed the scripts. The scripts changed over time until we settled down on one. They were very professional and really expensive. Everything was very well organized at the video shoot which was in a little forest in Kenya. Enos knew I love vintage cars so they incorporated one in the video. We rehearsed the scenes for about 2 hours and went on to shoot. The video took about 11 hours to film which was amazing. That’s the shortest time I have ever taken shooting a video.

Achievements I managed to do one of the best albums in Uganda and this song played a big part in that. Its abit braggatory but given where I have come from as an artiste, I can confidently say that the music I do as an artiste is ahead by like 10 years of most musicians though I love their stuff. Given that this was a rough year for me when I lost my mum and I was struggling a lot that I ended up cancelling some of the stuff I had planned to do since at that point I came first. Not the music. I was amazed about how that turned out for me and for the song too and the album at large. The song was one of my biggest. It was number one in Nigeria for 1 month and in Uganda it was Number 1 on many stations. It received a lot of airplay too on Trace Tv and MTV. The song wowed me when it moved across boundaries to West Africa.

Muhangi

ALEX

The man from Kigezi who has put the region on the map. The Ugandan Chris Brown look-alike whose comedy is taking him places. Chano8 caught up with him at his Naguru based studio to discuss his career in stand-up comedy and production as well as his other projects. Chano8: Who is Alex Muhangi?

But most importantly I would really want work with the latest recruit in the comedy industry, His Worship Former Presidential Aspirant, Sir Jose Elton Mabirizi

Iam a Stand Up Comedian/Producer (as in Music not Children) but for the non-Ugandan I'm a Father from Kampala, Uganda. To the Ugandans, I am truly from the Source of Bakiga.

Chano8: How would you rate Ugandan comedy on the world comedy scene?

Chano8: When did you start doing comedy?

Ugandan Comedy is the real deal, we just need a little push from our journalists & we will be "from down to up there." Trust me the world is yet to see how much gold our comedy industry holds, the cream of comics here are nowhere else. The future is here.

Professionally it was May 15th of 2008 it was a Thursday morning at 8am as I went past Theatre Labonita as I went to Campus, I saw a line of people auditioning, being a Mass Communication student at the time I said to myself, "Time to join the Ebonies" The "Ebonies" the likes of Dr. Bossa & Team were a hot cake at the time.

Chano8: You have a wild fan base in Uganda, what’s that special thing that you do to keep such a fan base, what’s unique about you? Comedy audiences want new material all the time as opposed to our musicians. So to survive in the industry, you have to keep writing. I guess that's why I have a following.

So I joined the queue only to find they were auditioning stand up Comics for a DSTV Show "Stand_Up Uganda", so I went in told a joke, they liked it & the rest is history. Chano8: What inspired you to do comedy and who are some of the people you look up to? I had no inspiration at all, it was all by accident, today I look up to people like Trevor Noah, Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" host. Now, that right there is inspirational.

52

Chano8. May - July 2016

Chano8: Who are some of the people you would like to work with both international and local? I like to work with Salvado, Anne Kansiime, Pablo, Mcvex, Omara & all other Ugandan Comics, Chano8 this a racist Question. Leave me alone heheh.. I like Kevin Hart & Chris Rock probably the most hardworking Stand_Ups of all time.

Comedy audiences want new material, all the time as opposed to our musicians. So to survive in the industry, you have to keep writing. I guess that's why I have a following! Continues to Next Page

STAR PROFILE Chano8

Chano8: What else do you do apart from comedy? Thank God this question says "What" not "Who" Well I'm a music producer by profession, I run my own record Company "Masters Music". Please check us online Facebook especially. I'm a farmer too. I rear a number of goats & cows, I'm a Brand Ambassador to Club Beer & Mirinda Uganda Respectively, I'm a Family Man, I have a beautiful wife, mother of a Princess (emoji had to come) & I like to play soccer & running Marathons, I also do Social Media for fun. Chano8: What are your most favorable moments in the comedy industry, any big achievements so far? Sure, the highlight was when I signed up with the Uganda Convention UK to host for five years & the day I performed at "The Improv" Dallas Texas and ended up performing in 5 other States after they saw what I'm capable of. Chano8: What are some of the major challenges faced in this industry? Well apart from Besigye, you know when he walks to work people fear and run home hence no show, comedians have become a bit comfortable because we have many gigs we tend to sit back & repeat, after all they're booking us, which is an issue to deal with. Also we're not paid that much, but this is okay, I don't want to annoy the people after reading this story they stop booking me. "You pay me what you want wama I'm kawa". Chano8: If you are given an opportunity what would you trade comedy for? Get serious, even Dr. Ian Clarke of IHK refers patients to my shows, there's absolutely nothing you can trade with comedy, not even a beautiful woman. Chano8: Where do you see Ugandan comedy in five years? Good question, you may use this answer as a headline to this interview, because it's going to make us work harder. Uganda comedy will overtake music and many other forms of Art in Uganda by 2021. Chano8:. What are some of your addictions? Wait, Oswadde (shame on you) I'm not into sports betting haha, but they are not many, I'm addicted to my phone (social media) and watching Manchester United play. Chano8: Tell us about your family? Why? Shya.... leave my Super Model & Princess Jehu out of this.

Chano8: What do you think has not been done well and can be changed in Ugandan comedy? New jokes have not been done, journalists should start selling us out there, like you just did here. Those two will change Ugandan comedy 16. Where do you see yourself in Five years? I will be boss meaning less hustle, no Rolex, I'm the next Host of "The Daily Show". I also want to be the first comedian to go the moon, by the next Presidential elections. The views expressed above are not necessarily those of this Magazine but for me & mine alone feel free to contact me for Business, Alex Muhangi is a great comedian, show host, wedding Mc kwegamba I can do anything as long as the money is good. Follow me on Social Media too as Alex Muhangi

Chano8: How do you find fatherhood, and how do you balance between your career and being a dad?

Long Live Chano8

I am the greatest dad ever. Like I mentioned above I make time for my family.

CAREER CORNER Chano8

I have a number of people I work with. Usually the artist will handle studio, and I promote where I have anumber of people handling distribution. With the band, well there is a lot to be done. There is someone in charge of everything. I mainly find gigs and venues then hand out payments. So I don’t have a permanent team hired to me but I do work with a lot of people in the industry by then I guess. That is how I got into events organizing. I then joined Talent 256 with Ali did some work with them. It later became a part time job as I was still working with musicuganda. com. I am most likely the longest serving employee they had. Hehe Chano8: When did you start managing artists? I started that when Blu3 had just broken up. I think that was in 2010. Jackie Chandiru was the only artist by then. We did Agassi together and I remember promoting it was a challenge, people believed her career was over before it began. There was ‘gwo yagala’ with Rabadaba and then 'Gold digger 'which did amazingly well. So far she has done 2 full albums, her first being ‘to live and to die’ and ‘chapter 3’. Chano8: What were the challenges managing an artist from a popular girl band? The first challenge that came up was that her song Agassi was in her local language which most people had trouble understanding. They had hoped for an English song. Later on it got her respect in the north and here too. When she started out the audience expected more Blu3 like music. Every song she did was to be compared with her music from Blu3. Identity was also an issue seeing as she was associated with a band and never really had the microscope on her as an individual or solo artist so in the begining it was hard and we had to explain who she was. We then took a step back and started rebranding her from scratch. It worked!

to listen to what all the members of the band would want and merge it into one thing yet an artist its just one person one goal. i.e a drummer, a keyboardist, a vocalist, a basist and so on. So I have learnt to be patient, learnt to listen and read people. I have learnt to appreciate live music more. I have had to learn the little simple basics about sound. Chano8: What are you currently upto? Which artist are you working with? Certain individuals whose management call upon me for my help. I also do some farming. Right now I work with DEG as well as Joseph Sax the lead Saxophonist in Janzi Band. Chano8: You are now working with Iryn Namubiru right? Yes, I am. She is now signed with the UK based Johnson Mujungu but I coordinate her business locally here. I work with Johnson and communicate when she is needed to be here and which business needs her attention that way there is no conflict in her scheduling.

Chano8: So do you have a company, or team you work with? Well that is complicated. I have a number of people I work with. Usually the artist will handle studio, and I promote where I have anumber of people handling distribution. With the band, well there is a lot to be done. There is someone in charge of everything. I mainly find gigs and venues then hand out payments. So I don’t have a permanent team hired to me but I do work with a lot of people in the industry. Chano8: It seems you travel a lot, you were in Nairobi what work are you doing there? Hehe. Some times companies call on me to handle some coordination work with artists. I am contracted by other firms which I won’t name to help get artists and negotiate and ensure they perform. So in Kenya I was doing that. Am sorry I can’t discuss who the client was or who the artist is either. Chano8: OK. What is your view about talent Management in Uganda so far? Well I believe we are still grasping as to what a good manager is to do. Its 50/50 percent gig. If you and artist aren’t on the same page and don't respect each other then you fail. A manager will look out for the artist and the artist needs to allow to be managed. If one of the parties is poorly treated it will reflect in their work. When it comes to music promotion, I believe a good song doesn’t need a lot of pushing and will be appreciated by the public so I don’t believe in people paying for a song’s popularity.

Chano8: what was your experience managing aband? There is very little difference between managing a band and an artist because all of them the end of it their struggles and fights are the same. The only difference is the number of people thus here you have

Chano8. May - July 2016

As a young artist coming up in the industry, what are the challenges you face? Most times it about the money, when you decide to take it on a career in Uganda currently, you shouldn’t expect any money. Producers and directors exploit us a lot mostly because we are many. A lot of girls are fighting for the same job s o if you wont take the little money being paid another girl will.So at the end of the day you will forget poor pay just to be on the screen. So if its not putting bread on your table why pursue it? For me its passion, I have loved acting since I can remember. I chose it because its my love and am good at it. Am still pursuing my degree as a backup plan, if acting doesn’t pan out I can always go pursue a career in journalism. Am working at succeeding in acting though hehe What was your biggest Payday? That was ‘The Coffee shop’. Hehe the money was good, I was paid per episode and I get continued appearances on TV which is very rewarding. I also did a stage play with John Segawa called ‘Gasuuze ntaate’ that paid well too. Which producer or directors would you love to work with? Wow, that is easy. Nana Kagga! The best part is she has already casted me in her upcoming film. I am so excited and can’t wait. That is pretty much it.

UHURU

THE FOUR MAN MULTI - TALENTED SOUTH AFRICAN MUSIC GROUP ARE ALSO MANY OTHER THINGS. Uhuru (Swahili for freedom) is a four-man South African music group best known for producing the hit single by Mafikizolo titled "Khona". The group, consisting of Themba Sekowe (Maphorisa), Nqobile Mahlanu (Mapiano), Sihle Dlalisisa (DJ Clap) and Xelimpilo Simelane (Xeli), is signed to Kalawa Jazmee. Maphorisa is the producer for the group while DJ Clap, Mapiano and Xeli are the DJ, pianist and vocalist respectively. Chano8: How did you come up with the name Uhuru? Uhuru is a simple Swahili word that means freedom or independence. We got that name because of the track we did as a crew. We had been looking for a name for like 3 months. So one day Oskido came and said we should name ourselves Uhuru which means freedom. So that’s how we ended up calling ourselves Uhuru. Chano8: How did you come to form the group Uhuru? It started between Dj Clap, Maphorisa and Xeli. We were 3 back then. Starting out, me (Dj Clap) and Maphorisa used to deejay a lot in Angola. After that, we brought Xelimpilo on board to try something with us we needed a vocalist who could push for us, he was doing drums and vocals at the same time. We started a band and Oskido decided that we must have a short name because the name we had at the moment was Clap, Maphorisa and Xelimpilo. We needed one name hence Uhuru. Chano8: When did you break out? We got known by the track Y-Tjukutja in 2013. We got noticed as Uhuru on our 2nd album. Chano8: What genre do you sing? We do Afro House. We mix it up with Kwaito, western music, hip-hop and we don’t limit it. We are defining Afro House as a genre that can blend with many other genres. We have collaborated with other artistes from other parts of Africa and we are using this genre to make Africa one. So all in all, we represent the root of Afro House.

Chano8. May - July 2016

Chano8: Which languages do you normally incorporate in your music? They are actually several languages. We have a total of 12 languages in South Africa like Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho, Tswana, Pedi and many more. We try to accommodate those languages and we also try to accommodate many other African languages in the music so we can make this one big African movement. Chano8: Which artistes have you worked with? We have worked with Davido, Wizkid, Diamond Platnumz, Fally Ipupa, Sifo Petro, Victoria Kimani and many others. We’re going to work with Chameleone...(Laughs) Chano8: Which of your songs do you like most? Khona ft Mafikizolo, Y-Tjukutja, The sound ft Davido and In My Bed. We consider most of our works to be big songs for us because everything we touch turns to gold. Chano8: Who are your role models? Our major inspirations are the legends like Feli Kuti, Salif Keita and many more. We are inspired by the legends who have brought the music to where it is today. Chano8: What accolades have you won since you started doing music? We won an MTV award, Channel O award, Metro Awards, MTN Awards and we are still getting more. Chano8: Have you been to Uganda before? And what is your perception of Uganda and its people.

CHANO8 MAGAZINE Chano8

This is our first time in Uganda and at first, we thought it was a quiet country because we saw the houses far from each other before landing at the airport but when we got here, we found it to be more like South Africa. There is no language barrier because we all speak English majorly. Chano8: Which Ugandan artistes do you wish to work with? We would like to work with Chameleone, Bebe Cool and Kenzo. We are already working on something with Chameleone. Chano8: How was your experience at Blankets and Wine? It was nice performing for a calm crowd that appreciated our performance. It was a special experience. Chano8: There are lots of festivals in South Africa, huge and some take 2 to 3 days. How do you rate them to the Blankets and Wine? Its more or less the same feeling but we party harder and host close to 20,000 to 30,000 people. We actually don’t have any event where we lay blankets and listen to music like at Blankets and Wine. This is mostly with Jazz music festivals. Experiencing something like that here with our House music was a very good experience. Chano8: So do you think if I brought Blankets and Wine to South Africa as a new event, it would work? Yeah it would work, we are talking of 4 to 5k people, its intimate, nice, people come sit on the grass with their drinks. We would definitely like to have it in South Africa too given the chance. Chano8: Your group consists of 4 people but only 3 of you came to Uganda. There are also rumours of a split going on in Uhuru. Is that true? When we started the group, it was me (Maphorisa) and Dj Clap first. I introduced Xeli and we released our first album. We then did another project added Mapialo and Dj Bucks. That is when we did Y-Tjukutja. In most cases, Dj Bucks has always been counted as a Uhuru member. Our group became successful and kept growing and like any crew,

This is our first time in Uganda and at first, we thought it was a quiet country because we saw the houses far from each other before landing at the airport but when we got here, we found it to be more like South Africa. There is no language barrier beacuse we all speak English some of the members were not active and they are putting more emphasis on their solo careers than the group Uhuru. We are one of the best groups ever and have inspired many like Mafikizolo which came onto the scene because of us. Me and Clap produced their whole album. We have produced music for very many artistes and we are trying to secure our brand because we do so many things and we have gone so far. We are trying to fix things with the other members to see that we get back on the same terms. Chano8: What you didn’t know about Uhuru We are some of the biggest producers in Africa and have produced so any songs like Oskido, In My Bed by Wizkid, Tchelete by Mafikizolo, The Sound and many more. We are also a group but many people don’t know that. We are teaching young people how to properly produce their music and also how to make it in music. We are more of an Africa focused brand than a South Africa focused brand. We love listening to country music. Is there anything else you do apart from music? We do a lot of things. We have an event on 28th May, we are organising a music festival and 3 days before the festival, we are going to have lots of people guiding youths on how to improve and nurture their music. We are also bringing Pioneer to train aspiring deejays and producers too. We are doing a lot of this to share knowledge we have learnt in several international conferences about music. We are also investing in property. Any last remarks to your fans out there? We have many more big projects coming up that we wouldn’t want to disclose now but our fans would be thrilled with the surprises. We also thank them all for the support.

GROWING UP Growing up as the youngest of three siblings, my late father instilled this idea in my head that I was his princess and that I could do anything I put my mind to. Then he passed on and it was just my mother, sister, brother and I. Being raised by single parent forced me to grow up very quickly. It also taught me to know exactly what it is I wanted and what I knew would be a waste of my time.

INSPIRATION

In the beginning I wasn’t too sure if I would pull it off because it isn’t your usual type of hip-hop you would hear coming out of S.A, but my love for dancehall music couldn’t resist. GENDER BALANCE

Yes I do, in most professions women always have to work extra hard just to be on the same playing field as the men. Especially now my particular industry, which is extremely male, dominated, but I wont let that get me down. I have something they don’t have and I'm not just talking women’s intuition.

UGANDAN MUSIC

I have listened to Moze and Wizo and of course the amazing Bebe Cool. For me Bebe Cool takes the cake.

FIRST SINGLE

High Fashion was my very first single to be released and was produced by House music maestro Culoe De Song. The direction I took with that song was different to what other artists were putting out. That why I thought it was best suited for me, because it showcased my crazy, colorful and energetic personality.

WORKING WITH BEBE COOL

I actually met him for the first time when he came down to South Africa. That was when we shot the Music video for “Killin It”. A very modest man. The advice he gave me when we were shooting the video was just what I needed. I loved working with him.

FASHION SENSE

Some people would say I have a very weird sense of fashion but its just because you have so many options, lol. What I like to do is fuse classic, vintage pieces together with whatever craze is going on in the world right now.

SOUTH AFRICA'S NICKI MINAJ?

Wow ! I wouldn’t say that just yet, but I am definitely well on my way.

Finishing off my album. I’m having lots of fun working with different producers and going through the writing process. I can’t wait to put it out sometime this year. Patty Monroe was speaking to Chano8 in an exclusive interview. Send comments to info@chano8.com

RELATIONSHIP DILEMMA

Relationship

Dilema

Her View

Gloria Batuta

R

elax Lucy, every woman who is married now or in a serious long term relationship will tell you what you’re going through is normal. Men are like diamonds when you get them they are stones in the rough, absolutely not perfect and as ladies it is our job to polish them and cut out the rough edges. The thing you are doing wrong in my opinion is letting him be, you found him like that and you are letting him stay that way which implies to him that you are okay with it. If you don’t like it, then change it. Financial problems are in every relationship and are easily handled. Start by talking to him, tell him about the future you envision with him, create a future for you both and point out that it requires saving and wise investment for both of you to have that dream home or take your kids to the international school you want.

64

Chano8. May - July 2016

I have dated this guy for five years and I was hoping to get married to him someday. The problem is that he is totally irresponsible with his money. By the 15th of the month, he is totally broke despite earning considerably well. I'm not sure if this is the kind of husband I envision yet I’m not sure if this is reason enough to break up with him. Am I being rational? Lucy

THE THING YOU ARE DOING WRONG IN MY OPINION IS LETTING HIM BE, YOU FOUND HIM LIKE THAT AND YOU LETTING HIM STAY THAT WAY WHICH IMPLIES TO HIM THAT YOU ARE OKAY WITH IT. IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT THEN CHANGE IT. FINANCIAL PROBLEMS ARE IN EVERY RELATIONSHIP AND ARE EASILY HANDLED.

If you live together and he is the not listening to you or diverts off the journey as soon as the money comes in (oh yeah men do that) then create shopping lists and collect all the utility bills and give them to him as soon as the money comes in, that way the basics are covered by 15th. I don’t think you should dupe him now but it is something you need to sort out now while it’s still just the two of you. When you have kids then it’s a different ball game and the responsibilities are endless, you will need some financial stability. Usually when you meet a man who has got it all together look for the woman responsible. Take off time and work on it together and go on to live the future you envision for yourselves.

RELATIONSHIP DILEMMA Chano8

H

i Lucy, well I think you are being rational only that you need to give this guy a chance to redeem himself. You have not mentioned if you have raised this issue with him and the response he has given you. It may come as a surprise but many men struggle with effectively managing their finances. That is why you will come across a man driving an expensive car yet he doesn't have any real assets like land, a house or savings. Women generally tend to have better financial management skills and that's why this comes off as an issue to you because you feel that there is a better way. You need to talk to your man and find out why he acts like that with money. There could be an underlying reason like say paying off a loan, taking care of his family or even trying to keep up appearances with his peers. After finding out the root cause you should work from there with a more informed perspective. But I’m a little curious. How come you have been with him for five years and you are realizing that this is an issue now? You honestly cannot say that you have just realised this. Some women accustom their men to spending a huge portion of their earnings on them and living the good life especially during the earlier stages of the relationship. When things get more serious and marriage seems to be in the offing, they expect the man to switch gears and become more of a saver than a spender. This may not be a very wise living and there is a saying that you cannot teach an old dog new tricks. If this was the case in your relationship then it may be unrealistic for you to expect your man to act any different. Granted, that is how things have been for the last five years. I would like to say that only you may care enough about him to help him through this and people have more pressing needs. So passing this onto his buddies or his family may not necessarily take the direction of the results that anticipate. So you have to be involved 110%. If he doesn’t have anything afore mentioned like a loan of family needs then you need to tell him that it is embarrassing for a grown man not to be able to control his cash flows and it doesn’t add clarity to both your plans of marriage. One of the things that you can do that will guarantee him saving is starting a joint account. This will enable the both of you put aside some money every month and remember that any penny saved is a penny earned. When you both have this underway he may realize that it's not a bad idea after all. You can check the account statement together after say six months and you may be both shocked at how much you have stashed away.

His Take

Mark Kawalya When things get more serious and marriage seems to be in the offing, they expect the man to switch gears and become more of a saver than a spender. This may not be very wise living and there is a saying that you cannot teach an old dog new tricks. If this was the case in your relationship then it may be unrealistic for you to expect your man to act any different. While you may not learn too much of a lesson from this kind of action your man may learn an indelible one on the benefits if saving. If he doesn't listen to you and you feel like it's something you should be worried about then tell him why this is important to you and the future that you both are working towards. If he doesn't care and wants to spend his money willy nilly then it’s probably an early warning about the kind of marriage that the two of you will have. So you may need to exercise some caution before uttering those “I do” words that many couples are itching to say. Good luck to you.

UG HOT Hottest Songs & Artistes # 1 Musawo WINNIE NWAGI

There is no artiste who is currently being talked about more on social media than Winnie Nwagi thanks partly to her curvaceous body but mostly because of her run-away song Musawo. The love song done at Swangz Avenue has all the attributes to dominate the airwaves for a long time. From the vocals, instrumentation and the choregraphy in the music video, everything seems to be on point.

# 2 Linda REMA AND CHRIS EVANS

This song about a wife seeking the attention of her busy husband got the attention of listeners at the end of the year and has since been on the airwaves topping local charts on Radio and TV as well as a regular on DJs play lists in most major night clubs. This quarter of the year it has remained strong even on caller ring back tunes (CRBT)

# 3 Nkwatako SHEEBAH KARUNGI

This song from Team No Sleep is a late entrance into the count down but shot straight to top three courtesy of the new ballistic video which Sheebah released in April and premiered at a well attended event at Laftaz in Centenary park. Although the debate is centred on the message and story line in the video, it is a well executed piece .

# 4 Walk To Work NUTTY NEITHAN

With events of the country unfolding so fast in the election period, the title of the song sounded so political. However whether the message had political connotation or not was swiftly forgotten by the fans as the beats and rhythmic flow of dancehall took over

# 5 Ddembe BOBI WINE

At the heart of the elections and the resulting tensions, there was only one artiste who took advantage by strategically selling himself as the 'people's voice' and that's none other than Ghetto president Bobi Wine. In this song that became instantly popular, he sings about the plight of the poor and ordinary Ugandans. Visit our facebook page chano8 or send an email to info@chano8.com

We present the hottest songs and artists that dominated air waves. # 6 Ujuwe DAVID LUTALO Last year was his year as he dominated airwaves and awards with his songs. Ujuwe in particular has been played on many radio stations across the country and is still a big hit. The video is no different as TV stations are still rotating it on our screens. Besides Ujuwe, Lutalo also still has Manya, and So nice doing well on many charts.

# 7 Baala DAXX KARTEL

This song took Ugandan night clubs by storm and also brought this former street and bar boy to the lime light. He won 3 awrds at Zzina Awards this year courtesy of this song which has propelled him high. The video is a story of it's own and usually keeps fans dancing with wide smiles.

# 8 Omwana Wa Baandi MOZE AND WIZO RADIO AND WEASEL

The exctremely talented Dunamic duo always have something up their sleeves. This year has however been a bit different because of the saga surrounding the Tubonga Naawe project as some sections of the public called for a boycott of the music by artistes involved in the project. However the duo have drawn mixed reactions as their music has kept playing on almost all radio stations.

# 9 Killin It BEBE COOL AND MISS PATTY MONROE

Voted as the 'song of the year' as well as 'Best collabo' in Africa by MTV Base, this song took time to get massive airplay back 'home' in Uganda. But the release of the video helped push it a step higher. South African rapper Monroe and Uganda's Bebe Cool teamed up for this with production by Michael Fingaz and Bushingtone.

#10 Bubble PALLASO

Pallaso has been seeking a balance between a local and international hit song and this particular dancehall tune seems to be close to that as it has been widely appreciated across Africa. To cast his net even wider, Pallaso decided to do a collabo remix of the song featuring Nigerian rapper Vector giving it more reach especially in West Africa. James also known as Sewa like most of his band members is a multi talented artiste who has learnt to play many instruments both traditional like the Adungu, Akogo, Endongo, Amadinda, Endigida which they usually seamlessly blend with modern instruments including the guitar, keyboard, saxophone and others to produce music for the world from the traditions, cultures and lifestyles in Uganda and Africa as a whole.

This driving force resulted in the introduction of a unique style that this young group of artistes developed and built a niche based on representation of music which is not tied down to a specific genre and style but rather an ever changing, evolving style which blends genres

Music Video

Well, it didn’t need that kind of campaign for this video to catch my attention because I was already familiar with the audio having listened to it and appreciated a few weeks earlier and I must say this is a song that deserves any music lovers ear for it is well crafted and will take the Team No Sleep diva places. But back to the video which is the subject of discussion here, it is action packed as expected and full of choreographed dances which is understandable considering Sheebah’s background with the Obsessions. Just like most Shasha Vybz videos is also full of rich color and illusion of light as well as motion effects which is always creatively well executed. However the issue of story line or lack of it has been raised even by some of the die hard Sheebaholics themselves and I agree with them entirely because this song deserves one. When you carefully follow the lyrics of the song, there is a deep lying message in there that was not brought out well in the story. But overall it is a good eye catching piece. SERENA RESORT-KIGO Bar, Restaurant and Lounge

T

he Serena hotel in Kampala is regarded among the finest and most prestigious hotels in the 256 area code. This is because of their fine dining and impeccable services. Although, first timers are usually concerned about the distance, the Resort is twenty minute's drive (30 km) from Entebbe International Airport and twenty minute's drive to the centre of Kampala (15 km). The Serena Hotel Kigo is indeed special and totally worth the 15 minutes drive on a bumpy dusty road. The most spectacular part is the view, the lagoons are beautiful and watching a sunset at the marina is just like a scene from a romance novel. Some of the best features include the recently opened 9-hole (soon to be 18-hole) Lake Victoria Serena Championship Golf Course, Club House and Golfing Boutique. The Marina is ideal for a wedding and is well furnished with a fully stocked bar and restaurant for all catering needs. You will find a wide selection of indoor and outdoor event

spaces such as the World Class Maisha Mind, Body and Spirit Spa, Gift shop, news-stand and travel requisites kiosk. Did I mention they have a helipad, as in if you seriously must fly your chopper over to play some golf, tennis or enjoy the evening breeze an sunset with your date, you are covered. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out why The Serena has become one of the most coveted places to hang out, this is where you will find the who is who of the country enjoying golf on most weekends. Management says they have 100 rooms which is why they are well equipped to handle bookings by large congregations and their calendar is busiest after the month of August until end of year. The hotel is open to everyone, the rooms range from anything above USD 230 but if you are not staying, you could have the entire mouth watering buffet from the citadel restaurant for UGX 60,000. There are villas standing next to the coliseum for sale and soon Serena is planning on opening apartments for their clients to have a homey feel during their extended stay with their families. It is heart breaking leaving the Serena.

ALBUM REVIEW

RUDEBOY MUSIC THE ALBUM

Sabiiti Bryan Mckenzie a.k.a Kella Mckenzie has been working on this project for about 10 years and his efforts finally paid off with the release of his RudeBoy Music The Album. This maiden album under his RudeboyMusic a Ugandan Hip-Hop project is intended to work with different talents in the country from mentoring, production and promotion.

F

ollowing the successful release of two mix tapes and a number of hit singles, McKenzi embarked on this project with determination as a celebration of Hip-Hop and to help pave away for the many young Ugandans that would love to get their message across using the art of HipHop. “This album is a light at the end of the tunnel for Ugandan HipHop. However, it’s beyond HipHop, it’s about getting the cream of Ugandan musicians and giving them reason to work together, something not so common thanks to the stiff competition.” McKenzi Said The 14-track album produced by McKenzie himself features some top Ugandan artistes and MCs like Ruyonga, APass, Lilian

Mbabazi and The Mith collaborating on different songs centred on the theme of celebrating Hip-Hop Uganda. Different producers including Sam Lamara aka Samurae, Baru Frank and sound engineers from Talent Africa, Dustville Records and Aethen music.

and Ruyonga exhibit dynamism in different genres put together in a flowing fusion of Afro-soul, RnB and Hip-Hop that uniquely blends in a captivating harmony. It is the epitome of the album and summarizes what the album is all about.

One thing that stands out is the distinct clarity in the sound manifested right from the opening song 'Winners circle' which features budding RnB singer Ivory Namara and dance-hall and Reggae star APass whose rhythmic mellow combination sets the trend for the rest.

Uganda’s Hip-Hop icons Navio and Keko team up in ‘Crazy’ that brings the old school gangster hip-hop feel to the album with the two interchanging in a power-beat relay style.

Just as McKenzie says, this is not about Hip-Hop only because in Ndakwikundira (I love you), the collaborating artistes The Mith, Lilian Mbabazi, Kahiri

Other big names who did a good job include Bigtril, GNL Zamba, Rabadaba, Mun G,Don Mc and Enygma others are Pryce Tebba, Tucker HD, Niki Nola and Flex D’Paper among others.

T

he night most Hip-Hop fans had been waiting for finally arrived and was more important to none other than the man of the night McKenzie Bryan Sabiiti. It took him a good number of years to make his mark on the music industry but he finally did and in a huge way. Bryan’s Company Kella Music premiered their heavily anticipated 'RudeBoy Music the Album' Gatto Matto a few weeks back. The entire evening could be summarized as a celebration of not only Hip-Hop, but a fusion of various genres of music on the same platform. McKenzie partnered up with Talent Africa, SMS ONE, Chano8 and Radio city to achieve this feat. If you didn’t know what was happening and just stumbled in you would have thought it was the biggest congregation of

RUMOUR HAS IT! Chano8

Rumor Has It! Sheila Don Zella in love again!

Zari, DiAmond Romance On The Rocks?

For sure Sheila Don Zella is a woman of means and with needs. After moving on from Big Eye and trying failing to be a musician, Sheila has decided she can as well concentrate on loving the musician. Rumour has it she hooked up the struggling artist Papa Cidy who has failed to get out of the shadow of Chameleone. With Sheila’s resources we expect the singer to rise up from the ashes. Sheila introduced Papa Cidy in April in a hash-hash ceremony.

Apparently, all is not well in the love nest of bongoflava star Diamond Platinumz and Ugandan socialite Zari Hassan. Since the rife with Diamond’s ex Wema Sepetu , Zari and her fans seem to have met a new foe. The well-known vixen Lynn is not only a fan of Diamond’s music but also a fan of his affection. The war is on social media and Wema is most defiantly in Lynn’s corner.

KATs and Douglas rival each other on camera These young and hip presenters have been friends for ages, they have worked together on numerous events. The problem was, while Douglas' star rose for his show ‘The Beat’, Kats stayed in the shadow with his not so popular show ‘Xposed’. When NBS came sniffing around NTV for presenters, Kats couldn’t allow to be left behind. He now hosts the new ‘After 5’ which is similar and airs the same time. What is brotherly love without a little rivary!?

Ivan’s prop Money can’t pay bills Rich Gang’s CEO Ivan Semwanga has been well photographed with a lot of prop money and a new skin colour but all these new assets are not any use when NWSC comes knocking. He was recently called upon to clear his water bill arrears. After the water being disconnected he went on to illegally connect it which forced the authorities to raid his residence in Muyenga. Well it’s not easy to maintain a pool at home and times are hard! Even on the Rich Gang!

Queen Bey makes Lemonade out of heart break. If you are a Beyonce fan and you have been rooting for her and Jay Z, there seems to be a serious new headline on all tabloids. It says her new album confirms tht Jay Z has been cheating. Is the relationship on the rocks? Lemonade is about what a dog Jay Z is, it’s about that infamous elevator fight, it’s about Beyoncé being mad at Jay Z, it’s about Beyoncé’s heartbreak over Jay Z. It is everywhere, but who cares anyway, All in all the album is Dope!

Catfight Hudda and Fabiola Just like the real housewives of AtlantaUgandan and Kenyan socialites Fabiola and Huddah Monroe are getting down and muddy gravelling about who looks better than who. Childish right? But to socialites it all about looks, popularity and lifestyle. It all started when Hudda’s picture was mistakenly placed on an article about Fabiola. She went on to blow a fuse saying they are nothing alike, but Fabiola fans insist Fabiola looked better. What is your take? Fabiola or Huddah?
