KNOWLEDGE BOWL NEWS
Get to know the highlights of the Chapel-hosted knowledge tournament
From February 22nd to 24th, 9 international school teams competed in Chapel’s Knowledge Bowl tournament and participants were hosted by Chapel students and teachers. Despite the fierce competition, sportsmanship and the school’s hospitality prevailed in the event. ‘Regardless the fierceness of the competition and the end results, on the last day, all students had dinner together. Rivalry is big, but their friendship is greater.’ States Chapel’s Knowledge Bowl coach, Ms. Teresa Sollero. Chapel’s team counted on seniors Arthur S. (captain) and Davi A., juniors Josh L. and Felipe M., and the sophomore Neil K. According to Ms. Sollero, each of the participants stood out in one knowledge area, making a strong and united team. ‘Arthur knows the game very well and he is one of the school’s best Social Studies students, Davi is our Physics and Math guy and acts calmly even when under pressure. Felipe knows a lot about Biology and general knowledge, being an asset to several diverse topics, Josh is the Literature and Math expert, besides being very proactive in the event organization and Neil, the team’s youngest student, is so excellent at technology that he even designed a website for the event to show the score in real time’, explains a proud Ms. Sollero. Students Rhea K. (10th grade) and Maria Luiza S. (12th grade) did not participate in the game, however, their participation was fundamental for the event organization. This year’s Knowledge Bowl winner is the International School of Curitiba (ISC). Our Lady of Mercy (OLM), from Rio de Janeiro got second place, and Graded, from São Paulo, got the third one.

Even though NJHS is a stepping stone to reach NHS, the organizations are independent and being a NJHS member does not grant a free pass to an NHS membership. The first requirement for a NJHS membership is the high academic performance, and this is the first of the many required skills to participate in the meetings and activities. To run for a spot, candidates face a routine of weekly morning meetings with plenty of dedication and planning to contemplate the pillars which sustain both organizations. NJHS selection process happened from August 15th and ended on November 14th. Eventually, only eighteen candidates from 6th, 7th and 8th grade fulfilled the requirements and were inducted in the ceremony on February 27th. “The key factor for a NJHS student is not becoming member but remaining as one. Being a leader brings the responsibility of becoming a role model, and this is not an easy task. NJHS is one of the few organizations in which the entrance door is smaller than the exit door”, states Érico Padilha, NJHS adviser.

Adriana Marques, responsible for the admission of new students and members at the marketing committee, states that the use of social media is important to integrate different grade levels at school: “it is a way to share information with families whose children are at different grade levels, so they can get to know what happens in the school”.

Denise Bais | ES English Reading Teacher Sabbatical year to take care of her child As soon as her son was born, Denise Nunes Kobara Bais decided to take a break from working to fully dedicate herself to her baby. With a major in Languages (Portuguese-English) from Universidade de São Paulo and a teaching license in Pedagogy, Denise had been continuously teaching for 15 years at language institutes and private schools (Escola da Vila and Consa – Colégio Franciscano Nossa Senhora Aparecida) to early elementary. ‘I wanted to fully participate at that moment of my child’s life, and I also wanted to make a change in my professional career, getting ready for a new phase’, she explains. To do so, Denise took Education and Language Teaching courses and acquired a CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from Cambridge last semester. ‘With an open mind to learning, I prepared myself to teach at an international school’. Her dedication paid off. Sandra Moreira | HS Spanish Teacher Searching for new stimuli The new High School Spanish teacher has a 20-year teaching experience in teaching languages at Brazilian schools (Bandeirantes, Dante Alighieri, Porto Seguro, Pueri Domus), bilingual schools (See-Saw Panamby) and universities (Unifieo) despite her young looks. Sandra has a major in Languges (Spanish-Portuguese) from Universidade de São Paulo, a master’s in Spanish Literature from the same university and she has started her PhD in Spain, where she lived for 3 years. During her time in Valladolid and in the Canary Islands, she was a private Spanish and Portuguese teacher. Her connection with the Spanish language and culture is so tight that fate lead her daughter to be born in Spain. Sandra learned about Chapel through Mr. Erick Santana, Chapel teacher and a former co-worker from previous schools, and she believes the invitation for the job selection process was a fortunate coincidence: ‘I was looking for new stimuli to my career after two decades working at Brazilian schools’. Sandra explains that an accident was also responsible for many changes in her life: after injuring a knee ligament, she became more interested in sports. Today she does not miss any opportunity to ride her bike at Ibirapuera or Villa Lobos parks, her favorites. She also used her recovery time to study English and get some of her PhD credits. ‘I rethought my life and I have changed my perspectives. That is the reason why I am here’, she reveals. The teacher has had a good impression of Chapel and she has noticed many positive differences: ‘The school is extremely organized, everything here works very well. Students are more responsible and independent, and I am enjoying it very much’, she comments excitedly.
