EVENT CELEBRATES 23 DIFFERENT CULTURES One of the most anticipated school events, the 2018 edition of the International Festival happened on March 24. The festival included the cuisine, music, and culture of 23 countries. Among this year’s novelties was a passport given to festival attendees. Guests received a unique country stamp inside their passport upon visiting each of the booths. All booths were decorated with signs complete with interesting facts about the represented country. Several performances took place during the event, which boasted the highest number of volunteers on record. “Many families participated in the festival and we had never had so many parent volunteers as this year” celebrated Carla Cajueiro, PTA secretary. Graziella Hariz Rahal, PTA Treasurer, highlighted the presence of many alumni, “Several families whose children have already graduated came to participate and worked at the booths.” Chapel students were very hands-on during the event. “High school students distributed the passports and guided guests on how to use it,” explained superintended Lucy Nunes. The festival also received visitors from other international schools from Sao Paulo including, Graded and PACA. The American School of Campinas sent representatives to Chapel. These students were able to familiarize themselves with the event and learn how the PTA makes it happen, according to Ms. Nunes

Each student displayed about ten pieces of work using different techniques including, acrylic, oil and watercolor painting, linoleum printmaking, mixed media sculptures (ceramics, polymer clay, glass and wire), photographs, and installations. IB Art teacher, Ms. Sylvia Almeida stated that this year’s exposition was, “One of the most impressive art shows because the works of art presented powerful and meaningful concepts.” According to her, the trip to Inhotim (MG) in October 2017 played a major role by influencing students’ work. “I am fascinated by the quality of the works every year, but this year’s DIGITAL CHAPEL 50

FASHION SHOW MUSICAL GENRE IN SENIOR FASHION SHOW The fashion show entitled Chapelpalooza on April 7, marked several end-of-year senior events. This year, the pre-graduation event was themed musical world as students danced and performed on the catwalk. The students designed all of the outfits and accessories. Additionally, students facilitated all of the musical productions as well as the image projections. “The fashion show is a farewell event, rather than an academic one. The class works as a whole for a common goal and they have lots of fun in the presentation,” explains the event coordinator, Ms. Sylvia Almeida. The show not only provides students with a good time together, but the event aims to gather funds for the senior prom. Which will be attended by 34 seniors.

MODEL UNITED NATIONS STUDENTS TRAVEL TO THE NETHERLANDS FOR THIMUN From January 28 to February 2, nine high school students participated in THIMUN (The Hague International Model United Nations Conference) in Haia, Netherlands. Chapel was invited to the conference because of their impressive performance in the previous Brazilian and Latin American competitions. “It was a great accomplishment for us. We have worked hard for four years to have the privilege of being invited again,” states Chapel’s MUN coordinator, Donald Campbell. He complimented all club members and former advisor, Mr. Benjamin Vaughan, who left MUN last year to become Chapel’s IB Coordinator. THIMUN is the main United Nations Conference in the world, gathering more than 3,000 students from 100 different countries. Two Chapel students, Neil K. and Arthur S., were chosen to be session leaders. “It was a significant leadership experience for them. Now we must keep up the good work,” commented Mr. Campbell. Chapel MUN team is comprised of 25 students who have already attended four conferences this year. The next conference will take place at Chapel in May. This conference will continue to strengthen the aspect of teamwork while promoting the integration of new members.

MATH AND PHYSICS Bruno D’Elia | High School Math and Physics Teacher The new high school math and physics teacher has a major in architecture from the Universidade de São Paulo (FAU/USP). However, his true calling is to be a teacher. Bruno’s skills with numbers since his early years of college, lead him to become a math and physic tutor. As a tutor, Bruno had the opportunity to come to work with Chapel students. Bruno has an old connection with the school as he is a Chapel alumnus. He studied at Chapel from first to twelfth grade, with a three year interval when his family moved to the United States. Now back as a teacher at Chapel, he went through a brief period of re-adaption, “I am glad to see many things have changed at Chapel since my graduation in 1997. However, one thing never changes – the food, which has always been fantastic,” he jokes. D’Eia, who is currently studying to receive a teaching license in physics, states he is truly appreciating the experience, “Despite being a constant challenge, I am enjoying it, and just like the students, I am learning a lot as well.”
