Camp Baker is... • A wide variety of exciting and engaging programs • Flexible to meet the needs of your family—with varying hours and bi-weekly and weekly registration options • An environment that promotes camper success through creativity and enrichment • The highest quality camp in Charleston • Your child’s home away from home, where we have been creating memories for 65 years

Why Choose Camp Baker? Because we offer something for everyone… and all in your own backyard. We are camping professionals, educators, social workers, and experienced child care staff, all committed to giving your child quality summer experiences, year after year. Camp Baker is housed on the grounds at the Charleston JCC, conveniently located in the heart of West Ashley. Our parents have consistently rated us the #1 summer camp in the Lowcountry! Campers return not only because of the fun they have had and the friends they have made, but because of the staff who return year after year to give them the summer of a lifetime. For 65 years, Camp Baker staff have been helping campers grow, develop, and create memories that will last forever.

Meet our Team Tamar Sternfeld JCC Program Director

Shalom (that means Hello, Goodbye, and Peace in Hebrew). I am delighted to be back for a second summer as your Camp Baker Director. For those of you whom I have not yet been able to meet, I would like to take a moment to introduce myself. I moved back to Charleston in the spring of 2011, along with my husband and our three children, and I am so glad to be home. 2012 promises to be an amazing summer! As a parent, I only want to give my children the best, as every parent does. Look no further—you have found it! Year after year, Camp Baker has been voted as the #1 Camp in the Lowcountry and we continue to strive to maintain that level of excellence for your child. This year, we are introducing new programs that bring our camp programming to a whole new level! Be sure to check them out on pages 15 and 16. From generation to generation—L’Dor V’Dor—Camp Baker has been inspiring children on their life’s journeys. Let us inspire your child this summer and we will give them an experience they’ll never forget. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns you might have. I look forward to sharing this 65th summer of Camp Baker with you and your child.

Alexis Bailey

Assistant JCC Camp Baker Director

Shalom chaverim (friends)! My name is Alexis Bailey, and I am excited to serve as your Assistant Director for Camp Baker 2012. I have a bachelors degree in Psychology from Winthrop University. I have worked with children and youth programs for the past seven years, and I have developed a passion for providing quality care for children. Having grown from a camper to a counselor to camp management, I can truly say that Camp Baker is a wonderful place to be. I am proud to be a part of such an amazing community and I can’t wait to see the new and returning faces for Camp Baker 2012!!

Lauren Dumas

Sports, Wellness, and Aquatics Director

My name is Lauren Dumas and I am the Sports, Wellness, and Aquatics Director for the Charleston JCC. I am so happy to be coming back for my second summer as Aquatics Director at the Pearlstine Pool. I have been waiting all year, working hard on taking classes and getting new certifications to be the best that I can be for you and your children this summer at the pool. I cannot wait until May, when we open one month earlier to show you everything we have in store! Get ready to splash into the summer of 2012 at Camp Baker!

What you need to know: Logistics

Group assignments

The camp day is from 8:30am-5pm for full day campers and from 8:30am-1pm for preschool half day campers. Morning Carpool begins at 8:20am and ends at 8:40am, so that campers can attend the Morning Assembly. Afternoon Carpool begins at 4:30pm and ends at 5:00pm. Any children not picked up by 5:00pm will join the PM Care campers.

We assign groups based on enrollment and we divide them as evenly as possible based on age. We define “age” as the age the child will be as of 9/1/12. We define “grade” as the grade the child is “rising” into.

AM/PM Care Does your family start early? Sign up for AM Care. We are here from 7-8:30am. All children dropped off before 8am will be offered breakfast. Fee: $35/session Need some extra time in the afternoons? Sign up for PM Care. We are here from 5-6 pm for families who need just a little more time. Fee: $25/session *AM and PM Care are not eligible for any early bird discounts.

Enrollment Camp groups are limited in size, according to space. Priority is given to JCC members and once a group is filled, we will begin a waiting list. We will notify you if a space becomes available.

Transportation This year, Camp Baker is offering transportation for all Camp Baker campers. We will have two bus routes this summer: Route 1: East Cooper and North Charleston Route 2: James Island and West Ashley. To reserve your space on the bus, contact the Camp Office at campbaker@charlestonjcc.org or 843.571.6565.

Field trip transportation Any time that Camp Baker campers will leave camp on a field trip, they will be transported on a JCC van, rental van, or a bus, driven by an insured, qualified, and authorized driver. Only children in Noar A and above will participate in field trips.

Food At Camp Baker, we are a kosher camp, under orthodox supervision. As a kosher camp, we do not allow any outside food on the premises. We will provide snacks daily for each child, along with a healthy, kosher lunch for all campers. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are always available as an alternative at every lunch. In order to make any accommodations for food allergies you must alert the Camp Office in writing by 6/1/12.

Swimming Teaching a child to swim is a core value in Judaism. All campers will be given swim lessons taught by American Red Cross-certified Water Safety Instructors. Skill assessment sheets will be sent home at the end of each session. Additional swim lessons are available. For more information, contact the JCC front desk at 843-571-6565.

T-Shirts Every camper will receive one t-shirt with their registration. Additional t-shirts are available for $10 each. Contact the Camp Office for more information.

Forms Every camper must have a medical form on file, along with an up-to-date immunization form. For the safety of your child, this form must be on file prior to your child beginning camp. These forms will be mailed out in early May and are due back by June 1st. Please Note: We can only accept children whose paperwork is completed and up to date.
