A Letter From the
PRESIDENT On Sunday, April 21, our CEO, Judi Corsaro had the pleasure of being the guest speaker for the Shalom Y’all group at Del Webb Charleston. Our Jewish community is growing so fast and one of our top priorities at Charleston Jewish Federation is to reach out to, and engage, all Jewish members of our community. Judi had a wonderful time meeting all the members of the Shalom Y’all group and spoke about what the Charleston Jewish Federation does. Together they discussed ways to provide services and programs for Shalom Y’all. As you can see from the article below, written by Susan Meyer, a resident of Del Webb Charleston and a member of the Shalom Y’all, the group is very active and several members have already become involved with CJF by supporting the Kosher Food Pantry and serving on the Jewish BookFest committee. Shalom Y’all group--we are so happy to welcome you into the Charleston Jewish community!
Shalom Y’all Group at Del Webb Charleston By Susan Meyer Del Webb Charleston isn’t exactly in Charleston. It’s located in the Cane Bay Plantation outside of Summerville. The community is an active adult community with the focus on active. It’s not your grandma’s retirement community. The only requirement to live there is one member of the household needs to be 55 or older. At present there are almost 600 homes and there will be 1000 when it is complete. About 45 of the residents have formed the Shalom Y’all Group. Most of the members are new to the Charleston Area. The group is social and spiritual in nature. It has rabbis speak at the monthly meetings and most recently Judi Corsaro, Executive Director of the Federation. Holidays are celebrated together. Members have Seders in their homes and make sure every Jewish person in the community has a place to go. The whole Del Webb Community is invited to the Chanukah Party. The choral group sings, the Chanukah story is told and of course latkas and other Jewish goodies are served. Members of the group have started the Publix Penny Item program. On Wednesday there is a coupon in the paper for a 1 cent item at Publix. We’ve asked the community to get and donate the item for a food bank. We alternate between a Catholic Church, Lutheran Church and the JCC Kosher Food Pantry. It has been highly successful. Anyone can do this. Just clip the coupon and bring the kosher items to the JCC. If you would like more information about the Shalom Y’all Group contact the President, Les Rosen at fdcsrfun@aol.com.

S
asha, 13, lives with her mother and her grandparents in Kiev, Ukraine. When she was only four, she was diagnosed with severe scoliosis and needed to get a back brace. The family would have to take her to St. Petersburg, Russia, to have it made, but they had no place to stay there and no means to pay for a hotel room. Sasha’s family was also told that seawater baths were essential for her health—but how could they afford trips to the ocean? They couldn’t even afford to fix the leaks in their dilapidated house, the same house in which Sasha’s grandmother group up. The Joint Distribution Committee’s Beteinu program, funded by Federation Annual Campaign dollars, came to the rescue. Beteinu’s staff found lodging for the family, helped them pay for the brace, and assists them with health-related trips to the ocean. But that was just the beginning. The family also receives clothes, and they participate in a food card program that helps struggling families pay for healthy groceries. And Sasha has learned all about Jewish values and traditions from Beteinu’s summer camp and year-round programs. The family’s connection with Federation goes back even further than Sasha’s childhood. Her grandfather, Grigoriy, explains that he himself was able to explore his Jewish roots thanks to a program funded by Federation. Growing up in Kiev in the 1950s, he learned nothing about his heritage at his Soviet school. It wasn’t until he had reached middle age that he began to educate himself about Judaism. “I went to the Israeli cultural center,” he says. “I was a grown-up man, over 50 years old – I started all that from the very beginning.” Since the women of the household work long hours every day, Sasha’s grandfather is her primary caregiver. When she was five, he took her to the Beteinu center in Kiev, where she could learn not only about Judaism but also acquire basic school-readiness skills. “When she first came there, she could do absolutely nothing. She couldn’t socialize with kids or adults. She was a shy girl;
it was painful. And now, thanks to her teachers’ efforts… the child has changed completely. She went to school well-prepared. She could read very well; she could do everything. And she wasn’t scared of anyone.” And as her grandfather had hoped, Sasha’s knowledge of Judaism deepened. “Every year Beteinu goes to build sukkahs on Sukkot,” she begins her list. “They celebrated all Shabbats there. Thanks to Beteinu, well, I know traditions… In Beteinu everyone gathers together. All my friends come to celebrate these holidays. And this way everyone remembers when these holidays take place and what they are.” The program has also strengthened her relationship with her grandfather. “We go together to all of Beteinu’s camps,” she says. “He developed a love of football in me.” “And chess,” he adds. “And a love of chess,” Sasha concludes. The family is thrilled with the program and its impact on Sasha. “Now she continues her quest for knowledge on her own,” her grandfather says. “It helps develop children’s spirits and gives them hope for the future.” Your contribution to the Annual Campaign supports partner programs like the Joint Distribution Committee, which helped Sasha. We directly make an impact on the lives of hundreds of thousands of Jews in the Diaspora and in Israel each day, and are committed to sustaining Jewish life in Charleston as well. To make your pledge and support our Annual Campaign, please fill out the pledge card on the back cover and return to the Charleston JCC, make a pledge online at www.jewishcharleston.org, or call 843-614-6487.

Social Services Members of the Charleston Jewish community attended a very special birthday party for a local four year old girl named Kenna May. This family has worked with the Jewish Social Services department of the Charleston Jewish Federation over the past year while Kenna has been in treatment. Kenna was born with quadriplegia and has battled with numerous health issues since birth. While she is non-mobile and nonverbal, her energy and love is felt by everyone she meets. After spending time getting to know Kenna and her mother Jaimie at the birthday party, we opened presents filled with clothing and supplies to carry Kenna into the upcoming summer months. It was a very happy birthday celebration for the May family, and one that our community will never forget. In order to help support Kenna’s medical expenses, Jaimie May is selling handmade hair bows. For more information on how to purchase a hair bow and receive more information on the Jewish Social Services department of the Charleston Jewish Federation, please contact Sara Sharnoff at SaraS@JewishCharleston.org

As the school year comes to an end, and the weather warms up, children wait anxiously for summer. Summer is all about singing camp songs, laughing merrily down the halls, splashing in the Pearlstine pool and cooling off with a freeze pop. What better place to enjoy summer than at the Charleston JCC’s Camp Baker? As we approach our 66th summer, we know that we have consistently provided quality care, an extensive range of extracurricular activities, great swim instructors, and a safe, loving environment. As former campers, we can truly attest to the fun and fond memories that we’ve enjoyed at JCC camps. It is that love, diversity, and welcoming arms from the Jewish community that has brought us back summer after summer. The goal of the Camp Baker Management Team is to ensure that your child comes home sharing tales of their fun-filled adventures and to wake up excited and ready for another day at Camp Baker. BBYO
Finishes
School Year
Strong By: Ethan Cohen
A
s the 2012-2013 school year comes to a close, BBYO Southern Region; Dixie Council prepares to say goodbye to a small but special group of seniors from Charleston. Alex Berlinsky, Max Landsman and Jonathan Buncher have poured their hearts and souls into Jewish teen life in the Charleston community for the past four years. Each of them has contributed to Dixie Council in countless ways. Berlinsky, Buncher and Landsman have embodied the dedication and commitment of model members, from attending almost every event and convention to offering their help in any way, they’ve been incredible. Additionally, Max served as vice president of communications (Mazkir) for Charleston’s CHAZA #143 and Alex Berlinsky served as vice president of recruitment and then president of CHAZA, and was the co-president (Godol) of Dixie Council. The leadership of these teens has helped provide meaningful Jewish experiences for hundreds of teens. In 2011, Alex personally planned the annual Charleston Labor Day Dance, which was a smashing success. While he’s just finished his term as Dixie president, Alex will long serve as an example for future leaders in BBYO. As we say goodbye to the outgoing seniors, we’re looking forward to a fabulous year ahead for Dixie Council. With Charleston’s own Tamar Sternfeld now leading our ranks as Dixie Council Director, the future is bright for Jewish youth in Charleston. Working with Tamar will be Dixie Council’s 50th Council Board including five teens from Charleston. Led by Seth Pinosky and Caroline Kalinsky (Presidents, AZA and BBG, respectively), Ethan Cohen (VP Programming), Melanie Weintraub (VP Recruitment), and Tiffany Dye (Treasurer) were also elected. This group has engaging programs planned, both in Charleston and in conventions around the Southeast. With a couple of top notch events to end the school year, including CHAZA’s Second Annual Father’s Day Softball Game, the end of the year will be a strong finish to what’s been a great year and a great four years for our seniors. Ethan Cohen is Dixie Council’s S’gan (Vice President of Programming) and CHAZA #143’s Kohane Godol (Immediate Past President). For any questions regarding BBYO, Tamar Sternfeld, Dixie Council Program Director (843.619.3613). About BBYO BBYO is the leading pluralistic Jewish teen movement aspiring to involve more Jewish teens in more meaningful Jewish experiences. For almost 90 years, BBYO‘s leadership programs the Aleph Zadik Aleph (AZA, high school fraternity) and the B’nai B’rith Girls (BBG, high school sorority) have been providing exceptional leadership programs and identity enrichment experiences, shaping the confidence and character of more than 400,000 alumni who are among the most prominent figures in business, politics, academia, the arts and Jewish communal life. Now, BBYO’s network of Jewish teens, alumni, parents, volunteers and philanthropists serves as the Jewish community’s most valuable platform for delivering to the post Bar/Bat Mitzvah audience fun, meaningful and affordable experiences. With year-round activities in hundreds of local communities and inspiring world-wide travel experiences, BBYO’s broad program menu enables teens to explore areas of leadership, service, civic engagement, Israel education and Jewish values. Davies Family Dor Tikvah Congregation Dor Tikvah successfully held its first full complement of Passover services this spring. A special “thank you” to our congregants for leading all aspects of services - including davening and Torah reading, and for sponsoring and producing exceptional Shabbat and Yom Tov kiddushes with a broad selection of tasty Passover treats! Starting around Purim, but now in fullswing since Passover, the Programming and Education Committee has launched a new, weekly Tot Shabbat service. This effort has been spearheaded by congregant and school-teacher, Samantha Goldberg and primarily targets children between 3 and 8 years old (though it is open to children of all ages). The program includes parsharelated activities and singing and has been a hit with the youngest members of Dor

(Luncheon reservations can be made by emailing info@ DorTikvah.org). The Davies will move from Oakland, California in July, with the Rabbi beginning full-time rabbinic duties at Congregation Dor Tikvah on August 1st. Shavuot Retreat BSBI
“I didn’t know there was a Jewish community in Charlotte SC”, this common refrain which we hear from many of our northern brethren, is being heard more frequently now, almost on a daily basis, as calls and emails come in to us. Why? Because BSBI will be sponsoring a Shavuot Retreat. A Retreat? For Shavuot? Yes, a complete package of tours, lectures and meals that all tie into the holiday of Shavuot which celebrates the giving of torah at Mount Sinai. Shavuot, as a two-day holiday, is a perfect opportunity for us to invite a large number of out of town guests to join our community as we learn, pray and have our meals together. For the out-of-town guests, we have reserved a block of rooms at the Francis Marion and have made arrangements
for a full array of southern delicacies prepared by Dolce Caterers of Atlanta. Imagine the look at on the faces of these Yankees as they indulge in the glories of deep fried okra, red velvet cake, cheesy grits and real southern brisket for the very first time in their lives. Plus, we will regal them with tales of the Jewish South along side a serious program of torah learning. It will be quite a yom tov, you can be sure. For those of us, native or adopted here in Charleston, you can also avail yourselves of much of these attractions and at a dramatically reduced cost. Just call our office for the details and please join us for an experience not to be missed. Speaking of experiences not to be missed, have you ever tried Shabbat services at our satellite minyan in South Windermere at 8 Lord Ashley Drive? Established many years ago as many in the Jewish community drifted across the river into West Ashley, the Minyan House is a full component of BSBI. Providing a needed service to those who wished to live in the suburbs but who also wanted to walk on Shabbat and yom tov to services, the Minyan House offers more than just the convenience of the shul round the corner. It is a warm, vibrant environment, filled with song and ruach and inspires all who attend. It does have a slightly different “accent” to our services Downtown at Rutledge Avenue. The walls there reverberate with enthusiasm and joy each Friday night as we welcome the Sabbath and continues through with the full cycle of services each and every Sabbath and holiday. And, if you want the full immersion into Minyan House life, try one of their famous Friday Night Dinners, when we pack almost 90 souls into the Minyan House. Be with us as the ruach reaches all the way to heaven.

srael is on our minds at Addlestone this month. As I write, our 8th grade is traveling in Israel. This month, our school community is planning a commemoration of Yom Ha-Zikaron (Memorial Day) and celebrations of Yom Ha-Atzmaut (Independence Day) and Yom Yerushalyaim ( Jerusalem Day). Israel education begins with our youngest children through the Hebrew language, songs and stories. The curriculum continues each year, until the 8th grade Israel trip, now an important annual event, a culmination of our Israel educational program. Ted Levin, grandfather of 8th grader Noa, told me that the Israel trip “creates a link, a relationship with Israel that makes concrete the land and people.” Addlestone 8th graders develop personal relationships through our twinning and communication with a sister school in Netanya. Our students have skyped with 8th graders from the Rigler School, beginning relationships that will be continued on the trip to Israel. Personal connections to Israel naturally flow from these relationships. We frame Israel materials and activities in the language of global education; this our student learning. International travel deepens our understanding of the world. Travel to Israel adds another dimension. Shari Allen, mother of 8th grader Zach, said that this trip was “back to our roots, our heritage. This is where it all began.” Phyllis Katzen, Board Member and Addlestone alumni parent, told me. “It enables us and our children to relate to another country and culture that is part of our faith. The Israel trip provides a beautiful gift at the end of our students’ education here at Addlestone, to connect them with the heritage that they have learned about since pre-school in their synagogues, homes and school.” It also provides an opportunity to connect to the State of Israel and its people on a very personal level, through meeting students at our sister school and visiting its sites. The trip creates a sense of unity among Jewish teens and it is
By: Gail Silverman certainly a life changing experience for our 8th graders. Holidays connect Israel to our students and help them understand Israel as a link in a chain of history and as meaningful for the present and future for the Jewish people. With parallels to our own Memorial Day and Independence Day, our students see two democracies achieving much success yet struggling with problems and challenges some similar and some different. At Addlestone this year, we celebrate Yom HaAtzmaut with Israeli food, music and a special celebration when our first and second graders receive their first Siddur in first grade and their first Chumash in second grade in front of students from Kindergarten through seventh grade (our eighth graders will be in Israel). On Yom Yerushalayim, we become Kibbutz Addlestone with our own animals (a petting zoo is coming), cultivating our garden and having stations where we will have real “jobs.” Jewish peoplehood and Israel are cores of our journey, whether physical, education or spiritual journeys. Recognizing the special relationship of Israel with the US, each president from the time of Israel’s establishment has supported the State of Israel. Harry Truman, the President who recognized the State of Israel, stated on the day Israel was established and recognized, “I had faith in Israel before it was established. I have faith in it now.” (May 14, 1948)
NCJW
On March 3, 2013, NCJW Charleston celebrated the success of our campaign against domestic violence. We donated the proceeds of our “Untying the Strings of Violence” Race/Walk/Family event to the Mt. Pleasant Police Department Victims Services Unit for their use in supporting victims and their families. Additionally NCJW Charleston Past Presidents joined together to make a $30,000 donation to My Sister’s House for their capital campaign to construct a new, modern, facility to serve women and children who have been victimized by domestic violence. At the same event, Sarah Finkelstein was honored with NCJW’s prestigious Hannah G. Solomon award for her amazing work in raising awareness (and funds) for the epidemic of domestic violence in our state. Our Annual Meeting and installation of Officers is scheduled for Sunday, June 2, at 2:00 pm at the home of Linda and Maurice Krawcheck. Please join us as I turn the gavel over to incoming co-presidents Marsha Greenhill and Linda Krawcheck. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the dedicated, hardworking Board who served with me these last 2 years. It has been a privilege.

Dear Incredible Jewish Community, With a humble heart, on behalf of my family and myself I want to thank you for your outpouring of support and prayers during my most desperate time of need. There really are no words to express my gratitude for all the friends, family and unknown good Samaritans that tested in hope of being a donor or for those that wanted to test and could not. You gave me hope, strength and renewed my spirit during a very bleak time in my life. The kidney transplant in February was a success and I am getting stronger day by day. I am blessed to have been given the gift of life and most important my children will have a healthy mommy to nurture them into adulthood. Each of you individually and collectively are in my prayers, that your days will be plenty, full of good health and much joy!
Warmly, Dana Rothschild

Major Projects
Hadassah
We had a great time at our April Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. In addition to a “speed-dating” update about Hadassah’s major projects, we all had a good laugh at the various hats and creative substitutes for hats. More “girl’s night out” programs will be coming your way….and we’re even planning some daytime programs this fall. Watch for the announcements. Speaking of fall –In a joint effort to help women around the world learn how to better protect themselves against heart disease, Irene Pollin, founder and chairman of Sister to Sister, has donated to the Hadassah Medical Organization to establish the Linda Joy Pollin Cardiovascular Wellness Institute in Jerusalem. Seeking to expand on its groundbreaking work empowering women throughout the United States, and
educating both federal lawmakers and the international community. Pollin’s gift will be the launching point of an alliance with Hadassah that will help both Middle Eastern and even more American women get heart smart. Heart disease is the leading cause of death among women. Although one in three women are currently dying from heart disease, simple lifestyle changes can have a major impact in reducing their risk. According to Pollin, “For a century, Hadassah’s inclusive approach to women’s health has broken down barriers and saved countless lives. Ours is a natural partnership, one built on a common notion of universal sisterhood. Since making my decision to establish the Institute in Jerusalem, my heart has been telling me how right this is.” Our Charleston Chapter is planning a major Sister to Sister Heart Health program this fall. If you’d like to help plan and deliver this important program, contact Sharon at 843-259-1710. Summer is fast approaching and that generally suggests a gentle interlude in the cares of the world and we take vacation, head for the beaches or the hills, and spend time with family and friends. But the world keeps spinning and needs don’t go away. Hadassah’s Keepers of the Gate are special women and men who make an annual pledge of at least $1000 to support Hadassah’s life lines. This year, the Southeastern Region is fortunate enough to have an “angel” who has committed $18,000 (yes, a BIG Chai) in matching grants for NEW Keepers of the Gate, for any Keepers who step up to the next giving level, and even for any Keepers who have lapsed in their payments.
Emanu-El
All are welcome at Emanu-El at all times, and especially on Friday nights. We alternate programs so you can choose the one that’s best for you:
Friday, May 3rd, “Family Shabbat”, 5:15-6:00PM A brief service geared toward younger kids and their parents, but everyone can attend (the service will be abbreviated, but long enough so that mourners can say Kaddish). Friday, May 10th, “Tour d’Emanu-El”, 7:30PM Services are held at a different location each month, where will we meet this month? Stay tuned. Friday, May 17th, “Friday Night LIVE”, starting with 6:00 PM services Friday Night LIVE is when we offer an out-of-the-ordinary Shabbat experience. It’s meant to surprise, excite and inspire you in new ways each time. Follow updates to find out the program and dinner menu for this month! Fridays, May 24th & 31st, “Late Night”, 8:15PM service followed by a congregational Oneg Shabbat potluck.
What does this mean? If you commit to $1000 and become a Keeper in 2013, your net donation to Hadassah is $2000. Wow! Two of our local members have already taken a step up to Chai Keepers – a commitment of $1800 per year. Please consider this opportunity to make your donation even more valuable. Contact Dorothy Weiner, Keepers Chair, at 766-1339 to say “Yes!” W hat ’s ahead at Hadassah’s Camp Judaea in Hendersonville, NC this summer? “The Past as Prologue: Jewish Genealogy Looks to the Future” May 18-19, 2013, College of Charleston Jewish Historical Society
While genealogy looks to the past, the study of our families and our cultural heritage may be a reliable guide to the future. In a world that moves in forward gear with lightning speed, the conference invites us to look back at where we have come from, to marvel at the transformations of occupation, wealth, and status Jews have experienced in relatively few generations, and to imagine where this momentum will lead. The conference title alludes to novelist William Faulkner’s famous quote: “The past is never dead. It’s not even past”—a view of time that lies at the heart of Jewish continuity. Guest speakers: Karen S. Franklin, an exhibit researcher for the Museum of Jewish Heritage, is co-chair of the Board of Governors of JewishGen. A past president of the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies and chair of the Council of American Jewish Museums, she is currently a vice-chair of the Memorial Museums committee of ICOM (International Council of Museums). She serves on the advisory board of the European Shoah Legacy Institute and was awarded the 2012 ICOM-US Service Citation. The citation is the highest honor of ICOM-US. Ms. Franklin is a juror for the Obermayer German Jewish History Award Steven M. Cohen is research professor of Jewish Social Policy at Hebrew Union College– Jewish Institute of Religion and director of the Berman Jewish Policy Archive at NYU Wagner. He has written or edited a dozen books and hundreds of scholarly articles and reports on such issues as Jewish community, Jewish identity,

and Jewish education. His current research interests extend to emerging forms of Jewish community and identity among younger Jews in the United States. In 2011 he was cited for the second time as one of the Forward Fifty. Sacred Strategies, of which he is a co-author, won a National Jewish Book Award in 2010. Following presentations by our guest speakers, a panel representing several South Carolina families will set the stage for viewing their antiques and artifacts on exhibit in Special Collections at the College’s Addlestone Library. Panelists will demonstrate how objects from everyday life are vessels of untold stories. Our forebears become our contemporaries as we discover the uses and meanings of things from the past. Mounted in conjunction with the conference, Family History Roadshow will be on display from the beginning of April through the third week of May. On Sunday morning, May 19, all attendees will have a chance to try their hand at researching their own family trees in a workshop led by Karen Franklin.
