Annual Lion of Judah Luncheon The gold lion-shaped pin they wear is a recognizable symbol of a woman’s commitment to her community, the Jewish world, and philanthropy. The 17,500 women nationwide who have the privilege of wearing the pin are Lions of Judah who pledge an individual leadership gift of at least $5,000 annually. They demonstrate their belief in our Jewish Federation and their dedication to making a difference. On January 29th, twenty-five of Charleston’s Lions of Judah gathered together for a luncheon at Tristan’s Restaurant to hear Anita Zucker address her family’s philosophy towards philanthropy and how it has impacted The InterTech Group’s dedication to giving back. This year the Lions also plan to glean for the Kosher Food Pantry, as well as take a trip to New York. Charleston is proud to welcome four new Lions this year: Sandra Brett, Fran Grossman, Sara Rittenberg, and Mindy Seltzer! PRESIDENT I am in awe of what the Charleston Jewish community does each year as a result of the funds raised through the Annual Campaign.

Both locally and globally our impact is great; consider the 5,000+ meals distributed through the Kosher Food Pantry in 2012, the 230 Charleston children who receive monthly PJ Library books, and the fact that we are funding the vital renovation of a bomb shelter at a senior citizen apartment complex. We support all of the local synagogues, Addlestone Hebrew Academy, the JCC, BBYO, and the Coming Street Cemetery, ensuring that Jewish life in Charleston remains strong and vibrant. Campaign dollars go to vulnerable populations in Eastern Europe, to educational resources in Israel and beyond, and to perpetuating Jewish life across the globe. The Annual Campaign is your way to play a role in developing the Jewish community for future generations to come. Please join me today— together, we do extraordinary things.

CJF welcomes Idit Klein, executive director of Keshet, an organization that promotes the full inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Jews in Jewish life. Under Ms. Klein’s leadership, Keshet developed a curriculum that has trained hundreds of Jewish educators in LGBT inclusion. Ms. Klein will discuss progress towards LGBT inclusion in Israel, the U.S., and Charleston after the 12:30 p.m. screening of the acclaimed film ‘Yossi’ at the Terrace Theater. ‘Yossi’ premiered to acclaim at the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival. This moving sequel to ‘Yossi & Jagger’ revisits an Israeli commander whose gay lover was killed in Lebanon 10 years earlier. An encounter with a young soldier reignites his romantic feelings.

Proclamations to Commemorate the Holocaust Each year, local city and county councils issue Proclamations that commemorate the Holocaust and honor Holocaust victims. In very moving ceremonies during their scheduled council meetings, a member of the Council reads a Proclamation, followed by a candle lighting ceremony. It is crucial for members of the Jewish community to support these proclamations by attending the council meetings at which the proclamation is read. The schedule of the readings of the Proclamations for 2013 is as follows: February 26th at 5 pm - Charleston City Council March 12th at 6 pm - Mount Pleasant Town Council March 14th at 6:40 pm - North Charleston City Council April 9th at 6:30 pm - Charleston County Council

YAD kicked off 2013 with a full calendar of events in February, featuring the introduction of a new kind of Shabbat dinner! Members were broken up into 3 separate dinners for singles, couples, and young families; these proved to be a great way for YADdies to get to know other members who are at the same point in their lives, and will certainly be repeated again in addition to our regular monthly Shabbat dinners. YAD also took to the lanes for a bowling happy hour at Sparian in Mt. Pleasant, celebrated Purim with BSBI at Southend Brewery, and hosted a real estate seminar with Carolina One agent and YADdie Barnett Greenberg. The TOM (Tikkun of the Month) for February was the making of mishlach manot baskets (including home-made hamentashen!) for the families served by Social Services through the Charleston Jewish Federation, which were greatly appreciated.

YAD has recently received local publicity for the programming it provides to young Jewish adults in the Charleston area.

LowCountry Live • On January 31 YAD was featured on ABC News 4’s show LowCountry Live, where board member Joseph Beker and CJF Program Director Sarah Roshfeld discussed the programs YAD offers, shared upcoming events, and re-introduced the Charleston Jews program.

Charleston Magazine • In February, YAD was featured in Charleston Magazine as a way for local young adults to meet through faith-based organizations.

As a result of Alan Dershowitz’s visit on October 14, 2012, our community raised $50,000 to donate to the project of our choice in Israel. The committee selected the Abu Hoshi Seniors Home in Haifa, which is in dire need of renovations to their bomb shelter. The following was sent to us from the director of Abu Hoshi, expressing his appreciation of our efforts. THANK YOU to everyone who made this project possible—we look forward to visiting the newly renovated shelter during the Gesher Mission to Israel this fall!

Shalom, my name is Hanukah Solomon and I am the director of the Abu Hoshi Seniors Home in Haifa, Israel. I am writing to say thank you on behalf of all the residents here. Thank you to the Charleston Jewish Federation and thank you to the Jewish community of Charleston for your support of our residents.

Two years ago the Abu Hoshi facilities were repurposed from living quarters for new immigrants to a residential facility for the vulnerable elderly. Our facility has 181 apartment units housing our residents who are senior citizens and almost all are single (windowed) and have no family in Israel. The majority are immigrants from the Former Soviet Union. Many are survivors of the Second World War and the Holocaust.

When I took over the Abu Hoshi facility, it needed lots of work. The building was 40 years old and had not had any renovations. The needs of young, new immigrants who were “passing through” created units that simply did not have acceptable living conditions for the senior citizens now living here. In the past two years, I have overseen extensive renovations to the building to make it accessible to our residents and to ensure our residents have pride in their apartments, regardless of how modest these units are.

What has eluded me, however, is the renovation of our current bomb shelter, which is of critical importance to the safety of my residents. The current bomb shelter is in bad shape. Yes, it is large and structurally sound. But it lacks any running water, has no toilet, no basic furnishings, the electric system is unsafe, the walls are depressing and, frankly, it smells. It is a place unfit to live in for more than a few hours.

If Haifa were to come under attack today, it is hard to imagine how my residents will be able to live in the shelter for more than a few hours in its current condition. If our fears of a dirty weapon are ever realized, our residents would need to live in this shelter for days for protection.

My residents and I are thrilled that your community and the Charleston Jewish Federation stepped up to raise the funds we need to do a very critical and needed renovation to the shelter.

I learned recently that the construction will provide us with a water system that will give us clean water and toilets.

We will have the electric system updated, the walls painted, basic furnishings brought in, and an air filtration system that will allow our residents to remain safe in the shelter in case of a biological or chemical attack.

This is all the result of you, and for this my residents and I send you our deepest appreciation.

Jelf Application for Interest-Free Educational Loans Available March1 Applications for interest-free loans for post-secondary education (college, graduate school and vocational programs) will be available to Jewish students in the Charleston area for the 2013-2014 school year from the ( Jewish Educational Loan Fund, in partnership with Charleston Jewish Social Services.) The loan application will be available March 1 – April 30 on JELF’s website at www.jelf.org. JELF loans are need-based and offer “last-dollar” financing, meaning that JELF provides the final dollars that bridge the gap between a student’s total financial resources and the cost of attending school. Applicants must be enrolled full-time in a program leading to a degree or certificate at an accredited institution that is located in the United States, be a U.S. citizen or have lawful immigration status in the U.S., and be able to demonstrate financial need (FAFSA application required). Circular Congregational Church was full of acapella fans on Saturday night, February 6th as the Duke Pitchforks and the School of the Arts Singers impressed an audience of over 150 guests with their musical talents. Crowd favorites included “Carolina in my Mind”, “Somebody to Love Me,” and “Coney Island Baby” and were followed by a cake reception and mingling with the Pitchforks. This year’s event drew more attendees than ever before, with all proceeds going towards HALOS to enable them to provide resources to needy and abused children in the tri-county area! If you missed the stellar performances this year, be sure to join us in 2014 for a fabulous concert to benefit a great cause!

Daniel has previously worked for the City of Charleston Recreation Department and the Charleston Riverdogs before joining the JCC in January. Daniel received his Bachelors Degree from The Citadel in the field of Sports Management. Daniel has experience working with both youth and adults across a wide spectrum of sports and activities. On March 5th 1989, KidsFair opened its doors as one of Charleston’s most loved family events. It is an event that began as a tremendous effort undertaken by the Jewish Community Center and one that required the cooperation of approximately 200 volunteers. This event has continued to grow each year with the joint help of the Jewish Community Center as well as community members and so many wonderful volunteers. It has become an event that families, all over the Charleston area, look forward to attending each year. It is a day of family fun that is cherished by all and so valuable to each of us in today’s world.

We owe much of this continued success to Sharon Toporek who inspired us with the idea of KidsFair, which she first learned about through the JWB Circle. KidsFair had been produced by the Worcester, Massachusetts Jewish Community Center. Sharon brought the idea to the attention of Past President Herb Rosner and the JCC board.

She realized the possible potential for a KidsFair to be held in Charleston, and with JCC board approval and direction, the KidsFair Steering Committee was established.

Today, twenty-five years later, KidsFair is still celebrated as a great family event and we would like to thank and honor Sharon Toporek this year. It is her many efforts, contributions and innovative ideas that has made this event such a community success! Sharon, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all you have done and continue to do for KidsFair!

The Charleston JCC seniors want to give a huge thank you to The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Charleston for providing a delicious dining experience at the restaurant 24 North Market. This restaurant provides culinary students with real-world experience in food preparation and dining room management. 24 North Market opens for lunch service on Thursdays and Fridays from 11:00 am to 2:00pm. Our seniors dined on the restaurant’s pre-fixed, rotating menu, which included an appetizer, entrée, and dessert, for only $12. The group left with full bellies and great memories!

248 Pound Weight Loss

October 16, 2010 was a pivotal day in Ken Dangerfield’s life. It was the day that he lost his beloved mother and the day that he finally decided to take control of a problem that had plagued him since early adulthood.

Obesity. Ken was 68 years old and weighed in at 410 pounds. Let that sink in a moment...410 pounds! That is well over twice what one adult male normally weighs. Not only was Ken dangerously obese, but he was on fourteen different prescription medications to manage conditions brought on or exacerbated by his weight. He had no energy, couldn’t get a restful night’s sleep and battled with feelings of worthlessness and guilt. Ken had also been his mother’s primary caretaker for the past 17 years. Putting himself first was a foreign concept and feeling that he deserved to be healthy, fit and happy was a constant struggle. “I used to tell myself that I wasn’t worth it, that even if I did lose weight, nobody would care. I don’t believe that anymore.” Ken says. What changed? Ken’s mother had always been concerned about his health and wanted him to try to lose the excess weight. In her death, he saw his own mortality and gained the courage to try one more time to lose the weight. Ken had tried other diets. Every diet. He would lose weight, only to turn around and gain it all back, plus some. Something told him that now was the time to make it stick. This time there would be no excuses, no escape clauses and no shortcuts. Ken made an appointment with his doctor and together they decided that he would follow The Diabetic Diet. With the advise of a nutritionist, Ken began the plan. Smaller portions, adequate protein, lots of vegetable and tons of water (he drinks a gallon a day!) became the norm. No more fried foods, processed snacks and sugary sodas. Ken had to learn about proper portions and the importance of planning meals in advance. These lessons have served him well and helped him to consistently lose weight every week. At his doctor’s direction, Ken tackled the first hundred pounds through dietary changes alone, but he knew that exercise had to become a

part of his life if he wanted to continue to see results. So, he began walking.

At first it was a struggle to walk a half-mile, but soon that half-mile turned into one and then two. Before he knew it, Ken was walking up to seven miles a day, six days a week.

Fast forward to January 2013 and Ken is a fit 162 pounds and is down to five prescription medications, with the goal of being reliant on no medication at all. Asked what his happiest moment has been since losing the weight, he didn’t hesitate. “Oh that would be the day my doctor said ‘No more insulin shots for you!’. We both cried.” Boundless energy, an incredibly positive attitude and inspiring everyone around him, are just a few other things he can now add to the growing list of benefits he has experienced on his weight loss journey.

Ken follows a maintenance version of The Diabetic Diet and can be found every day, twice a day, at The Charleston JCC Fitness Center getting in his seven miles of walking on the treadmill. He has grown to love the JCC, not only for its affordability and proximity, but also because of the support and friendships that he has made.

Ken also credits good friend Donna Bailey, manager at Sherman House where he resides, for encouraging him every step of the way. “She’s my biggest cheerleader and always tells me how good I look, how great I’m doing.” he says.

These days, the former English teacher also speaks to diabetic support groups and encourages everyone around him to be active and make good decisions about what they put in their bodies. “I used to think that I couldn’t make a difference, but then I look around and see all these obese people and watch them overeat and make such bad food choices. I see myself in them. You know, I’ll always be that fat guy in the back of my mind. I KNOW that if I can do it, they can too. My story can help them and if I help just one person, just one, then it’s all been worth it.”

Ken’s fit tips Give yourself time to adjust to your new way of eating and exercising. It took me about three weeks before I began to feel confident that I could do it.

Don’t let missteps discourage you. We all stumble. Get back on track with the very next meal or workout.

Do it for yourself. It’s great to have a special event to motivate you or another person to inspire you, but in the end you’ve got to do it for YOU. No negative self talk. Would you say it out loud to another person? Then don’t think it to yourself.

Kosher Baking BSBI

M

My husband and I have been in Charleston for six months now and there are three things we’ve learned about BSBI that were not advertised in the job description we read a year ago: A) BSBI is incredibly friendly. In fact, I challenge you to attend our shul without being greeted with a warm smile when you walk in. And grab some delicious cholent while you’re there. (*Cholent served for Shabbat lunch only) B) There are dolphins only a short walk away C) This shul is the most active place I’ve ever heard of!

January was a whirlwind of activity at BSBI. Our first-Sunday of the month hot breakfast brings people from a variety of ages from college students, YADees, families with small children, empty nesters and seniors, all eating together as one extended family. And since we’re all one family, we take advantage of each other once a month at a special Shabbat Kiddush-Lunch, in which we celebrate our members’ birthdays with cholent and a special parsha-designed birthday cake! for baking and designing our latest cakes, and Zohar MacDowell, Tovi Admon, Joyce Haber, Johanna Feldman and Judy Appel- our cholent chefs.

We had a fantastic Scholar in Residence Shabbaton with Rabbi Daniel Cohen, which included a Friday night dinner and Shabbat lunch that attracted over a hundred people. We followed that with a well-attended kickoff of the “Women in Judaism” series, which will be taking place every month on Tuesday nights- please check the BSBI website for details. To cap off that busy week, we hosted a fantastic TriSisterhood program the following Sunday morning and finished the day with a moving program in which we installed the new BSBI officers and honored four of our members for their incredible dedication to our shul. Mazal tov to Eric Schaeffer, Elaine Brabha, David Kirshtein and Barbara Schwartz on their well-deserved awards, as well as Robert Molony, who was awarded the Aaron Solomon award by Mayor Joe Riley. Thanks to Barbara Schwartz, Sara Beth Rosen, Sara Finkelstein and Joyce Haber for all of their hard work on those programs. And, as always, much thanks to the indefatigable, Fay Graben, for just about everything.

In February, Mellow Mushroom invaded the BSBI kitchen and provided a delicious kosher feast. Based on the excitement from that event, we are preparing to unveil more kosher events and establishments in Charleston. We encourage you to check our facebook page or website for further kosher announcements.

While kosher night was a blast at BSBI, we ventured out of the synagogue and brought kosher with us to SouthEnd Brewery on Purim night when we threw a huge party complete with megillah, drinks, amazing hor d’oevres and a “Purim shpiel”. Much thanks to our hard-working programming committee! And after months of hard work and hamentashen baking, we so enjoyed our Mishloach Manot, thanks to Barbara and Fay for spearheading the project, and of course, all of our many hamentashen bakers!

We are looking ahead to Passover when we will be having a lively communal seder on the second night (frog cake?). Space is limited so please call the BSBI office immediately to reserve a spot.

Those interested in hosting a stranger and those seeking a place to celebrate Pesach were encouraged to complete First Night Passover Matching forms.

Ritual Committee members compile the names and locations of Passover hosts and match them to the names of those eager to share the Passover feast with new friends. oth of Synagogue Emanu-El’s main auxiliary groups will be in the spotlight in March. The Sisterhood will hold its annual Ladies Night Out at 6:30PM on Wednesday, March 13th. As always, the program will include cocktails, a raffle, and the men of the Synagogue serving as waiters. The feature entertainment will be led by accomplished blues musician Gary Erwin and the backing group “Shrimp City Slim.” Rest assured, the band will be the only shrimp on the premises!

The Men’s Club takes its turn that weekend during the annual Men’s Club Shabbat. On Friday night, March 15th, Erev Shabbat services will take place

Third Graders AHA Thank you for giving us hope. Students in Third and Fourth Grades at Addlestone Hebrew Academy sent letters, pictures and even handmade gifts to students at two schools who are dealing with the trauma and aftermath of surviving Hurricane Sandy.

In turn, the students in New York and New Jersey sent letters of thanks and gratitude.

Hurricane Sandy caused much destruction physically and left many families without homes, electricity and normalcy for weeks. With the help of their Second Step teacher, Coach Candace Vanderstelt, the Third and Fourth Graders showed that Addlestone’s students care by sending a special care package.

A few days ago, a packet arrived in the mail from Atlantic City filled with letters from Chelsea Heights Elementary School written on January 22.

“Thank you for giving us hope. Thank you for all of your drawings, they were great. Thank you for caring….Erica” Storms, such as Sandy, are unpredictable and unpreventable. We often feel helpless and alone. We have friends and family who were without electricity for 2 or 3

months. So much that we take for granted was literally washed away. While funds for rebuilding are critical, emotional support is also an essential aspect of healing.

“My name is Damilian. I am in third grade at Chelsea Heights School. Thank you for all of your drawings, they were great. They are the best and only cards we received.

Part of building community is to create ways to share empathy, to construct pathways of communication.

“My name is Lance….Thank you for caring for our school. Thank you for your letters and cards-- they made us feel so much better.”

Second Step is a curriculum that teaches core social-emotional skills such as empathy, emotion management, and problem solving. Coach V.’s Second Step lesson on caring included sending get well cards to show how compassion, through receiving cards, made people feel better.

The lesson occurred during the week Hurricane Sandy hit the New Jersey/New York coast and the children were all very aware of the devastation in the area. With a discussion of caring came the connection to the victims of Hurricane Sandy.

With growing excitement, students asked: “Why don’t we send cards to students in the area?” Coach V. found two schools, one in New York City and one in New Jersey and sent their letters. One Fourth Grader made a bracelet for each school as a physical token of her caring. A Chelsea Heights’ student wrote: “Thank you for sending us the bracelet.

My teacher has it hung on our board as a sign of hope and good luck.”

Four hundred Hadassah Associates traveled to Israel for the Centennial Convention and the dedication of the Sarah Wetsman Davidson Hospital Tower.

Individually, many Associates have donated generously to the building of this new structure. Collectively, Hadassah Associates have completed their commitment to the 10th Floor (East Wing) Internal Medicine Department Medication Room and are currently more than half way to their $36,000 goal to equip and furnish a Cardiology Department Double Patient Room in the hospital tower.

While visiting the new building, Associates had the opportunity to view their recognition for these rooms. They were filled with pride.

Everyone: Some recent Hadassah initiatives reflect our values: Zichronam Livracha: For Their Memory Shall be a Blessing In response to the tragic events at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Hadassah launched a campaign to plant trees in the Be’er Sheva River Park. Hadassah has raised over $66,000 for the planting of 3,700 trees and counting.

Gun Control and Improved Mental Health Services The Hadassah community has also spoken out for gun control and improved mental health services, in order to help prevent further tragedies such as these. Hadassah encourages its members, associates and supporters to visit the Hadassah National Action Center and the Zichronam Livracha petition, of which Hadassah is a sponsor.

Besides serving as chair of our membership committee Evaline was indispensible in making the Amanda Jo Kalman Walk / Run / Family Fun Day an enormous success-- raising more money than ever before.

In addition to NCJW and her commitment to Synagogue Emanu-El, Evaline and her sister, Phillis Mair, are Co chairs of the Remember Committee allowing them, as children of a holocaust survivor, to promote tolerance and support Holocaust education.

On March 3, 2013, NCJW Charleston will celebrate the success of our campaign against domestic violence. In a reception at the Holiday Inn Riverview, we will honor Sarah Finkelstein for her amazing work in raising awareness (and funds) for the epidemic of domestic violence in our state. We will also be making a serious financial commitment to My Sister’s House’s, Inc. (the sole domestic violence shelter based program serving the Trident area) capital campaign as they undertake to construct a new, modern, facility to serve women and children whose lives have been shattered by domestic violence.

Upcoming Events Helene Berr Exhibition: Helene Berr, A Stolen Life

The exhibition will run from March 1-27, 2013 in the rotunda of the Addlestone Library (corner of Calhoun & Coming Streets) Helene Berr, A Stolen Life gives life anew to its subject, a budding French scholar of English and literature whose life was brutally cut short in the Holocaust. Berr left behind a journal of extraordinary beauty and value both as literature and history, one that provides a rare view of how French Jews perceived persecution.

Theodore Rosengarten: Why Do We Continue to Read Holocaust Journals?The Case of Helene Berr

Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at 6:00pm in the Addlestone Library, Room 227

Helene Berr was a student of English at the Sorbonne, in Paris, when the Nazis invaded France. In 1942, at age 20, she began writing a journal describing a world that brutally ostracized her for being a Jew. She wrote in her journal every day until March 1944 when she was deported to Auschwitz.

Berr died in Bergen-Belsen in 1945, just days before the camp was liberated. Her journal surfaced seven years ago and instantly became a “classic” in France, both for the beauty of the language and for the rare view of how French Jews perceived persecution during the German occupation.

Berr’s life and journal, and the exhibition that has been built around them, in the context of contemporary Holocaust representation. He will attempt to answer the question: why do we continue to read Holocaust journals?

EDUCATION: At Addlestone Hebrew Academy, 8th grader, Nate LeRoy, son of Lara and Scott LeRoy, was the first place winner in the school’s National Geographic Bee. Aaron Levine and brother Elan Levine were second and third place winners. Aaron and Elan’s parents of Abby and Norm Levine.

Judah Ellison, son of Deborah and Morris Ellison, won this year’s competition for his essay sponsored by the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The topic was “An Unsung Hero of the American Revolution”. Six students from the Addlestone were included in the program on the USS Yorktown on January 25th. Judah Ellison, Maxim Fisher,Zack Allen, Noa Leigh Hubara, Aaron Levine, and Jacob Gleaton participated in the program reading letters to introduce each part of the program.
