As they grow up, young Jews will face challenges to their beliefs and identity. We believe the best way to protect our children against ignorance and hate is to educate them. From the pride of a preschooler learning his first Hebrew words to the confidence of a college student prepared to grapple with anti-Israel sentiment on campus, we’re strengthening Jewish identity and inspiring a life-long connection to Jewish values. But we need your help. Donate to the Annual Campaign today at www.jewishcharleston.org or by calling 843.571.6565 www.charlestonjewishvoice.org

A Letter From the
PRESIDENT Playing golf one Sunday afternoon, I mentioned to one of my friends that I was the incoming President of the Charleston Jewish Federation and Jewish Community Alliance of Greater Charleston ( JCA) President. They asked me why I wanted to be the President of another organization, especially a Jewish organization. I have grown up in Charleston, raised my children in Charleston and I want to make sure that the Jewish community continues to thrive for other people’s children and “perhaps” one day my children and grandchildren if they move back to Charleston. We live in an amazing city that has been nationally recognized as being a wonderful place to live. We have an opportunity to work together to make our Charleston Jewish Community. In 2012, The Charleston Kosher Food Pantry provided over 5,000 meals! Ninety percent of those meals (groceries) were distributed to Jewish members of our community. We have neighbors, family and friends struggling to make ends meet and keep a roof over their heads. In 2012, Charleston Jewish Social Services paid utility bills, mortgages, rent, medical bills and many other expenses that community members needed help with. At Charleston Jewish Federation and Jewish Social Services we do not look for band aid solutions; rather we look at ways to provide long term positive and productive results for individuals, families and our community. In 2013, I ask you to join me, the JCA Board, Judi, and the staff and make a meaningful contribution to our community and the CJF Annual Campaign. When the phone rings…please answer the call. -Spencer Lynch

FEBRUARY 2013 SHEVAT/ADAR 5773
The 2013 CJF Campaign Chairs have been hand-selected to represent the spirit of giving in our community. They are volunteers who are dedicated to raising awareness of the responsibilities of Federation, while securing the necessary funds to fulfill the needs of our community and the world at large. Through innovative and enriching programming, they will inspire us as a community to achieve Tikkun Olam. However, they cannot do it alone, and will be reaching out to the entire community for support. Please join the Federation; we are counting on everyone to make 2013 a momentous year of giving.
Ellen Hoffman is a Charleston native who just recently realized her full potential for getting involved, beyond making an annual Federation campaign commitment. Once Jeffrey Buncher asked her to join the JCA board in 2010, she accepted as a way to honor and reflect the value of philanthropy her parents, Marilyn and Howard, had instilled upon her. Ellen then took Anita Zucker’s Lion of Judah Challenge and is now an active Lion of Judah, as well as the Federation Treasurer. Ellen is excited about the 2013 Federation Campaign and honored to be the CoChairperson for Women’s Giving.
Ruth Goldberg has held board positions on numerous Jewish organizations in Philadelphia, and currently sits on the board of KKBE Sisterhood. She co-chaired the relocation, renovation and design of the Jack M. Barrack Academy (formerly Akiba Hebrew Academy) in Bryn Mawr, PA. She has been a Lion of Judah for many years and is a board member of the Charleston Kosher Food Pantry. Ruth owns a design and renovation business, Roz and Ruth Designs, and maintains her legal practice. Ruth and her husband, Harry, who is Vice-President of the Charleston Jewish Community Alliance, reside on Kiawah Island. They have two daughters, Sarah and Jennifer.

I will be participating in a Jewish Federations Mission to Cuba as part of the 2013 Small Federation Executives’ Institute February 12-18. Every five years the Small Federation Executive’s Institute goes overseas in order to learn firsthand what our campaign dollars are providing and to learn with and from another Jewish community. We have been asked to collect items for the trip which will greatly benefit our fellow Jews, who live under extreme financial circumstances. A typical monthly income for an individual is $10 per month. The items found on our website are extremely difficult to obtain in Cuba, so please help me to collect the needed items and drop them off at the JCC to my attention. I look forward to sharing my experiences upon my return. Thank you in advance for your help. Judi Corsaro JCC/CJF CEO

YAD
Ending 2012 and Ringing In 2013! December was a busy month for YAD, featuring both new events like the successful Dog Date, and some old favorites like visiting with the seniors at the Sherman House, our Chanukah Shabbat dinner, and participating in Chanukah in the Square festivities. Our 5th Annual Matzo Ball was also held on Christmas Eve and attracted 81 young adults to Tsunami’s for vegetarian fare and a night of schmoozing with local YADdies and some from Columbia! To kick off 2013, YAD helped the HOPE Lodge organize their kitchen and donations, held a wine tasting at Uncorked in Mt Pleasant, and partnered with the College of Charleston’s Jewish Studies Program for a Tu B’Shevat Shabbat!

YADShabbat
In February, YAD is excited to introduce a new way to celebrate Shabbat! For what will certainly be the first of many, February’s Shabbat dinners will be separated into three groups: singles, couples, and young families. Each dinner’s specifics will be determined by the host(s), and will be open to any YADdie interested in meeting others who are at the same point in their lives as the host.
Couples Shabbat, hosted by Ricky and B. Jay Novit Friday, February 1 in West Ashley
Singles Shabbat, hosted by Rachel Hershenberg Friday, February 8 in James Island
Young Family Shabbat, hosted by the Sternfeld family Friday, February 15 in West Ashley
Please contact admin@charlestonyad.org to RSVP and receive more information about the dinner of your choice.

YADdies and their pups gathered at the East Bay Dog Park on a beautiful December morning for some socialization and a release of pent-up energy – for both the canines and the humans! 4. YAD hosted cornhole at the 8th annual Chanukah in the Square and it was a hit among children and adults alike! Our set, painted to look like a frying pan with ‘latke’ bean bags, was even borrowed by the Addlestone Early Childhood program the following week!

Holocaust Memorial Maintenance
Proclamations in Commemoration of the Holocaust
The Charleston Holocaust Memorial, dedicated on June 6, 1999, will undergo maintenance thanks to generous donors, committee members and the City of Charleston. The scope of work contracted by the City of Charleston includes restoring the floor of the Memorial back to its original condition and improving the existing lighting. An ad hoc commitee consisting of Sandra Brett, Judi Corsaro, Jennifer Phillips, David Popowski, Jeffrey Rosenblum and Anita Zucker worked closely with City of Charleston Deputy Director of Parks Jason Kronsberg. Contributions to the City of Charleston from Holocaust Survivor Joe Engel, the Sam Greene Family Foundation, and the Renee Kolender Endowment will off-set a portion of the cost with the City of Charleston paying the remainder. Special thanks to David Popowski who spearheaded this very important project. Our community has lost another Holocaust survivor, Sam Greene. Sam Greene (OBM) dedicated his life to the perpetuation of Holocaust education as well as the development of the Holocaust Memorial at Marion Square. His passing illustrates the importance of maintaining this memorial and continuing to create initiatives and programs which insure that the horrors that took place during the darkest period in mankind are never forgotten.
Every year, local city and county councils issue Proclamations that commemorate the Holocaust and honor Holocaust victims. In very moving ceremonies during scheduled meetings, a member of the Council reads the Proclamation, followed by a candle lighting ceremony. It is crucial for members of the Jewish community to support these proclamations by attending the council meetings at which the proclamation is read. Proclamations will be held on February 12th in Charleston County, February 26th with the City of Charleston, March 12th in Mount Pleasant and on March 14th in North Charleston. For more information, please contact Tamar Sternfeld at tamars@charlestonjcc.org.

OUR COMMUNITY
New President BSBI
A
As you read this, I have just entered office as the new president of BSBI, and I must admit that for me, this is the most unlikely of events. Most of you do not know me and perhaps this is a good time to introduce myself and explain how I came to BSBI. I was born and raised in New York, as my accent immediately betrays. We spent a career working on Wall Street and made the switch a few years ago to the quieter life of a shul officer. Some would call it retirement, others would say a glutton for punishment. I am a Charlestonian, not by birth but by choice and my wife, Joyce and I, love this city and consider it a privilege to serve the Jewish community here. We have lived here since 2005 and we are so grateful to all our friends who have been so welcoming. We have experienced the warmth of BSBI and are struck by its commitment to Torah values. As president, I have no doubt I will make mistakes, but I hope to listen and I will try my utmost not to disappoint you all for the trust that has been shown me. In the short time that I have been in office, I have been
delighted by the number of people who have offered their time, ideas and enthusiasm for involvement in our synagogue and its myriad of programming. Although it is now months later, our various Chanukah events are still fresh in our minds… our lively Friday night dinner at the Minyan House and the memorable sight of all our children lighting their own menorahs at our Sisterhood Chanukah dinner followed by a spirited dreidel game. On January 17th, we had a panel discussion on the Black/Jewish experience during a key time in the civil rights movement and then immediately following, we had a Scholar in Residence Shabbaton with Rabbi Daniel Cohen of Stamford, CT. Both events were enlightening and communicated powerfully to all the participants. In this issue of the Voice you will see an advertisement for the various classes we offer each week. We have striven to ensure they speak to all elements of the Charleston Jewish community. The classes are held not only in our synagogue, but also at the JCC and even at a Barnes & Noble, where coffee is readily available. The classes take place throughout the day and are an excellent opportunity to learn something new with friends, some perhaps old and others new. We should also mention that these classes are a wonderful time to make the acquaintance of our new Rabbi, Moshe Davis and his wife Ariela. We’d suggest you’ll not regret taking the opportunity. We love them and they are enriching all our lives. Beyond classes, we are striving to enrich our Shabbat service and maybe fatten you all up too. Our birthday/anniversary of the month kiddushes have been a huge success, possibly due to the vegetarian cholent and ice cream cake we serve. We also serve up a great hot breakfast on Sunday mornings. Free, by the way. Keep your eyes open for our Purim event on Saturday night, February 23rd… taking place in a location you’d least expect! ~Larry Haber

Celebration
in Marion
Square Chabad
Charleston’s Chanukah in the Square is an annual gathering to commemorate the energy of light and miracles of long ago. It pays tribute to mankind’s long fight for religious freedom, when a small band of Jews, led by Judah Maccabee, miraculously overcame the powerful army of King Antiochus in the wake of the Hellenization and conquests of Alexander the Great. In victory, the Temple was retaken and a tiny flask of oil was found to light the menorah. There was only enough oil for one day, but it remained lit for eight days, until more oil could be purified. On Sunday’s festival, which fell on the second night of Chanukah, Marion Square was filled with delightful sights, aromatic smells, tempting tastes, sounds of singing, and lots of people. The celebration was called for 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, but there were crowds lining up at the respective booths by 3:00, to make sure that they would be in line at opening and get their portion of goodies. The smell of cooking Latkes (potato pancakes) was complemented by traditional sufganiot (donuts) popping out of a special donut-maker. There were hot dogs, burgers, chicken noodle soup, hot pretzels, cotton candy, chocolate gelt, Chanukah jellies, coffee and soft drinks. The many booths also offered
The second night of Chanukah, Marion Square was filled with delightful sights, aromatic smells, tempting tastes, sounds of singing, and lots of people. an array of entertainment including dreidel (a spinning top) playing and menorah making especially for the younger children. There were two human drediels walking through the crowd distributing dreidels along with Chanukah gelt (money) in the form of chocolate coins. The Yaschik Arnold Jewish Studies Program, the City of Charleston and Chabad of Charleston and the Lowcountry would like to thank our generous sponsors Piggly Wiggly Carolina, Berlin’s Restaurant Supply, the Hyman family, and the T-Bonz Foundation. Additionally, we would like to thank our many wonderful co-presenters; Addlestone Hebrew Academy, Bnai Brith Youth Organization of Charleston, Charleston Chapter of Hadassah, Charleston Chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women, Charleston Jewish Community Center, Charleston Jewish Federation, CHARLEY, Congregation Brith Sholom Beth Israel, Congregation Dor Tikvah, Hebrew Benevolent Society, Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim, the PJ Library, Synagogue Emanu-El, and the Young Adult Division of CJF. It was a special tribute to Gucia Markowitz who passed away earlier this year and to the remaining Holocaust survivors—Joe Engel, Charlie Markowitz, Dientje AtkinsKalisky, and Tsipi Wagner-- who lit the second candle. The well over a thousand persons present honored their miraculous journey from the horrors of the Holocaust to a celebration in Charleston’s Marion Square, with Mayor Riley and Lt. Governor Glenn McConnell giving impassioned talks about Charleston’s long history of religious diversity and the special contributions of Jews to South Carolina for the last three hundred years.

Dor Tikvah Over the last few months Congregation Dor Tikvah has interviewed and hosted numerous rabbinic candidates to lead our new congregation. We hope to finalize our decision very soon. Our members are very excited about hiring a rabbinic leader to take us forward. Congregation Dor Tikvah participated in its first Chanukah in the Square festivities on December 8, 2012 (see photo). A team of Dor Tikvah members cooked and distributed one thousand delicious soft pretzels. The booth seemed to be a hit with the crowd and as a result our workers made a lot of new friends.
Our congregation continues to thrive as we welcome new regulars. Jason Daniels and Jonathan Sigman started a weekly D’Var Torah program on the Introduction of Prayer. These mini-lectures help us all to better understand the meaning of prayer and related insights from past or present Jewish scholars. Jason and Jonathan also help us to relate these prayers to modern day occurrences, challenges and situations. Check our website: www.DorTikvah.org for more information.

Sunday with Strad and Guarneri, Rare Violins, Magical Music: February 17 at 4:00 pm Maybe once in a lifetime the stars align so Charlestonians can hear two of the world’s finest violins played by remarkable artists in a stunning setting. Happily, the stars will line up perfectly on Sunday, February
17th at 4:00 pm in KKBE’s historic 1840 Sanctuary at 90 Hasell Street in downtown Charleston. Friendship started it all, with two boys at camp in Wisconsin. Jim Klein, now a member of KKBE, met Bill Sloan and a lifelong friendship was forged. Today, Jim is an attorney teaching at Charleston School of Law and Bill is a urologist living with his wife, Judy, in Los Angeles. Bill and Judy are renowned music lovers and talented musicians. They own a Stradivarius violin and a Guarneri de Gesu which they offered to bring on a visit to share their magical sound with Charleston and KKBE. What makes Bill and Judy’s offer remarkable is the rarity and history of their violins. Antonio Stradivari, a genius 17th and 18th century violin maker, crafted instruments regarded as the finest violins in the world. Only 600 now exist. Bill and Judy’s violin is from Stradivari’s Golden Period. Some experts believe Giuseppe Guarneri’s de Gesu violins rival Stradivari’s. Fewer than 200 exist. Sometimes acts of generosity like the Sloan’s spark other generous acts. The Charleston Symphony Orchestra’s Concertmaster and Acting Artistic Director, Yuriy Bekker, volunteered to play the Sloan’s violins for a concert at KKBE. As a critically acclaimed soloist, Mr. Bekker has performed throughout the United States and abroad. Recent appearances include New York, Chicago, Miami, Asheville, Flagstaff, Scottsdale, Orlando, and Austria. The Concert’s musical selections will range from Bach, Bartok, Vivaldi, and de Bariot to Vaughan Williams, Korngold, Kreisler and more! Purchase tickets at www.kkbe.org. Limited Seating: $18/ Balcony Seating (only 40 available), $36/ General Admission, and 100 premium seats reserved for optimum sound at $100 each. Those purchasing premium seats are invited to a private champagne reception with the artists and instruments following the concert. www.charlestonjewishvoice.org

“We are grateful for being
Jewish!”
Thankful
Third Graders AHA I have the privilege of praying with our classes. One morning, the morning of my birthday, I joined our third grade. After we sang, “Modeh ani,” thanking God for the blessings of our lives, I asked the children what they had to be grateful for. Only a few children could think of anything to say. We continued with our prayers and after we ended, the children put their sidurim (prayer books) away. I came back to my earlier question. How could we find things we could be grateful for? One boy went back to get his siddur and looked up the morning blessings. Now the students were on a roll! “We are grateful for being Jewish!” “We are grateful for seeing!” “What does it mean to straighten the bent?” “We are grateful for water!” We are grateful for waking up each day! I asked one girl on crutches if she was now grateful for the ability to walk easily. She thought for a moment and then nodded slowly, knowing she would be walking and running soon. We talked about being thankful for food, for family and siblings (this had some faces
from a few students!). Each day brings aches and pain, accidents, loss and disappointments. How do we remain grateful each morning? How do we move beyond despair, frustration and anger? Yesterday, a dear friend had passed away after a long illness. Friends contacted me and I was able to send a meal to be used during the shiva by the family. Yesterday, a teacher fell and broke her ankle—she would need surgery. Our staff immediately rallied around her—bringing meals, helping carpool her child at school and calling to give hope and encouragement. Now these two items were not happy news yet they brought me a sense of profound gratitude. We have the power to hurt, to spread nasty rumors and to destroy. Each of us also has the power to share, to reach out, to support and to behave ethically. Our traditions give us the strength to make good choices and to perform mitzvot. We are reminded to do good deeds through prayer, through the strength of our traditions and through the good people in our communities. I am most encouraged to see the goodness in the world when I see our children: the little ones who rush up with a hug; the older ones who write me special birthday cards that I will keep for years; and the Middle School students whose thirst for fairness, and have such high hopes for their futures. At Addlestone, we support the development of goodness and compassion through our leadership program, through our tzedakah projects, through our 2nd Step and through learning from role models. Teachers and staff, parents and family friends and community members are all important role models for our students. More important than any book learning are the lessons that children learn from the actions of those they see. Children emulate us, for good or bad. This is our challenge and our greatest task. -Susan Weintrob, Head of School

Todah Rabah Hadassah It’s almost time for one of Jewish Charleston’s best programs: A Woman Who Makes a Difference. We hope that everyone will be at the JCC on Tuesday, March 5, 7-9pm. Who will be Hadassah’s honoree? We promise it’s someone with as generous a heart as her smile. We also hope to see you at a wonderful, thought-provoking play, The Whipping Man. The Village Rep on Woolfe (formerly Village Playhouse). This is a story about the relationships and interactions between a Southern Jewish Confederate officer and his former slaves just after the close of the Civil War. Set at Passover 1865, the wounded officer returns to his ruined Virginia home to find his family missing and only 2 former slaves remaining. The three await the family’s return. We have blocked a set of tickets for Saturday, March 2, 8pm show. Tickets purchased through Hadassah will be $36 and include a Wine and Cheese reception. If you are already a Village Playhouse subscriber, please
Wondering about the photo? Recognizing Hadassah’s Centennial we collected 100 animals for 100 years. (Naturally, we overachieved and there were more than 100!) The animals have been donated to MUSC Children’s Hospital. Thank you to all our donors.

Special opportunity to build a city. Be’er Sheva, known as the Capital of the Negev, is home to 200,000 residents. Through it runs Nahal Be’er Sheva (Be’er Sheva River), a muddy trickle of water except on the few days a year when flash floods run down its banks. The city’s image has mirrored the landscape. Despite its historical significance, many have seen Be’er Sheva as a stagnant backwater, culturally and geographically isolated from the modern miracle of modern Israel. To thrive, the city must double its population, by keeping students from Ben Gurion University after graduation and convincing commuters from Jerusalem and elsewhere that Be’er Sheva is a desirable place to live. Jewish National Fund is providing the means for a renaissance for this Negev metropolis. The centerpiece of our efforts is the Be’er Sheva River Park, a massive water, environment and economic development project that is transforming the riverfront into a 1,700acre civic paradise. You can make this vision real. Contact Bonnie Silverberg at 556-5670 for more information. Sunday, February 17, 2013 at 10:00am in Arnold Hall, Jewish Studies Center What challenges and benefits do being the “other” pose to our Jewish identity? In what ways has “otherness” led us to assimilation and acculturation? How do Jews balance our obligation to the “other” as opposed to the rest of the Jewish community? Jewish T
Life at Porter Gaud
his fall, Jewish Life for Upper School students journeyed through many areas of Jewish thought under the leadership of Jason Daniels and with assistance from PG teachers Dr. Aaron Lehman and Mr. David Myer. We began with welcoming Rosh Hashanah and studying the meaning of the shofar as well as what the process of Tshuva (Return) is all about through the eyes of the Rambam (Rabbi Moshe Ben Maimon, 1135-1204). During the fall months we delved into what it was that Avraham and Sarah really discovered, what it meant to be Jewish then and to have our beliefs at that time. This allowed us to have a clear understanding of the core world/spiritual view of Judaism. Winter came quickly and Chanukah arrived, we were blessed not only with a great gift exchange with the Middle School students but also with the blessing that we, the remnant of Israel, have been brought to this time and season to light the menorah. Middle School Jewish Life spent the fall months looking at current events and how they relate to Israel, which was led by Porter-Gaud teachers Deborah Reinhold and Bryan Daigle. The students have proven to be wonderful debaters and enjoy taking different sides of an issue and forming their opinions based on both personal experience and external factors. In December they joined with the Upper School students for a spirited gift exchange and enjoyed hearing from Jason Daniels about the legacy of the miracle of Chanukah and why we have shared it L’Dor V’Dor for so many years. The Middle Schoolers look forward to learning about the election season in Israel with Rabbi Adam Rosenbaum in January.
