The South is experiencing the emergence of a new spirit, and we are excited to tell the stories of the movers + shakers who are carrying the torch. Southern Renaissance is inspired by a diversity of flavors, cultures, and people. Our festival finale will feature chefs who are pushing the boundaries of what has been called “traditional Southern” cuisine. Expect artists whose voices + sounds fill your soul with a spirit that is electrifying, and artisans + makers who share their talents through bespoke items inspired by our landscapes + people. Embark with us on this journey as we introduce you to our South. Change is a-comin’.

DID YOU KNOW? Gospel Brunch, supported by Taste of the South, is back for the ultimate encore. This year, guests will dine at this family-style feast under the century-old oak trees at Legare Waring House.

Rodney Scott of Rodney Scott’s BBQ made an appearance in the 2019 Charleston Wine + Food creative campaign to promote the 14th installment of the festival. This year’s campaign tagline, Experience Our Story, is all about people. They’re at the center of everything we do. Their stories influence our story. Their stories are our story. This year’s campaign told the stories of a diverse group of food and beverage talent that individually and collectively have shaped + influenced the story of Charleston’s culinary + hospitality community. Each one of these individuals featured in our campaign represents the ideas + values of Charleston Wine + Food. Their stories – where they came from, how cooking makes them feel + what food means to them, and how they want their stories told to the world – were interpreted through doodles + illustrations that embellished their portraits.

DID YOU KNOW? This year we challenged our Signature Dinner hosts, who help us create the foundation for our talent lineup, to tip the scale and cultivate a more diverse roster for the 2019 festival by inviting a guest chef who doesn’t ‘look like them.’ Even more exciting, with International Women’s Day falling on the Friday of the festival, our team rose to the challenge by having all programming on March 8, 2019, highlight women. You will see this reflected in many ways on the schedule. Female winemakers + guest chefs will collaborate with local chefs at Signature Dinners. Events will highlight + celebrate female farmers, purveyors, artisans, chefs, mixologists, winemakers, and musicians as talent.

Marcus Amaker, Poet Laureate of Charleston, SC

We’ve come here to feast on the flavors of the Lowcountry: To breathe in the ocean’s salty safe haven, where serenity and shellfish are served every day. To learn about the after taste of our history’s fresh lessons, built on the backs of West Africans. To appreciate farmers and fishermen whose passion feed the entire city. We’ve come here to raise our glasses to the spirits of the South and drink carefully crafted cocktails inspired by the coastline, to sip wines that crossed the sea. We are free to pour pints and drown in our love of libations. We’ve come here for conversation. To realize that food is more than just the ingredients – food is family, food is community, food is our soul. We break bread to bond with our sisters and brothers, to be mindful of the alliance we’ve formed with mother earth and thank her for her gifts of nourishment.
