SMITH & DAVIS: 56 Years of Selling Shoes and Clothing–and Still Growing!

When Ronald Davis and Fred Smith bought out Jud’s Trading Post in 1965, they were both already successful retailers selling carpets and home furnishings. They named their new venture “Smith & Davis”—a clothing store specializing in work clothes, shoes, and dress apparel for the mostly rural surrounding communities. The store was located on the then, not too busy, two-lane Highway 54 running between Fayetteville and the new town of Peachtree City.

In 1973 Smith sold his portion of the business to Davis and headed south just as Fayette County was beginning to explode economically.

Smith & Davis Clothiers has been in its present location since 1988. It is still a family run business with Ron Davis, his sons Tony and George, and his daughter Beth, working every day. The family is a team that provides their customers with a personal service and brand knowledge in a broad array of shoes and merchandise.

Tony Davis reminisced recently about how the family took a chance years ago on a startup company—they took on a new line of running shoes known as Nike! That story is the essence of what enables Smith & Davis to keep so many happy customers today in a time when so many brick and mortar stores are failing. Continuing to keep that leading edge on shoes and fashion, the family has added some “younger buyers” to make sure that they continue to introduce new customers while keeping their older customers.

“We listen to our customers,” says Tony, “and we work at giving them what they want!”
