CHARLOTTE
GENERAL MANAGER A LETTER FROM THE
Dear Members,
Summer is definitely in full swing here at Charlotte Country Club, seen in full tee sheets and a bustling pool deck. The season started strong with golf tournaments and another successful year of swim team in our beautiful pool complex. Watching members enjoy all of the Club's facilities is a wonderful site to see.
This year's campus updates continue to progress as we witness the construction of the Indoor Tennis Facility and the Mack Ferguson Golf Facility. I am anxiously awaiting the completion of these projects and the ways they will greatly enhance the member experience at Charlotte Country Club.
We have had a busy year so far at the Club and we expect the trend to continue with our extended pool hours this season and the incredible condition of our golf course and tennis facilities. As you will find in this issue, we have several club events coming up, including a Napa vs. Sonoma Wine Tasting, and a handful of events taking advantage of our wonderful pool complex including a 4th of July Pool Party and Sunday Splash events, just to name a few! Our Golf and Tennis calendars are lively this summer as well, with member favorite events such as the Golf Member-Member Tournament and a new Ladies' Golf and Tennis Mix Sticks Event.
In addition to details on all our upcoming events, you will also find tips from the tennis pro to strengthen your mental game, the recipe for pool snack bar member favorite Summer Ceviche, and helpful information on Club safety, campus facility hours of operation, and more!
Please never hesitate to reach out to me or a member of my team if you have any feedback, suggestions, or information you'd like to share in the next issue.
I look forward to seeing you enjoy your Club this Summer!
Respectfully,
Priscilla Eich GM/COO

We have engaged a security consultant, Chris Swecker, to further analyze and improve our campus security and safety procedures. The presence of CMPD officers on CCC grounds has been increased with both morning and evening shifts. We have also included additional procedures in our communications plan for emergency situations, including a direct line for all staff to access our on-campus CMPD officer at all times.
In the event of an emergency, we want to remind members to first call 911, then find a CCC team member who will help to alert our on campus officer.

MIX UP YOUR
CENTERPIECES
fun, creative ideas to liven up your tablescape
One of my favorite aspects of event planning is brainstorming new and creative ways to dress up a tablescape. Of course, you can never go wrong with fresh florals and candlelight to provide an elegant ambiance for any occasion – but I have also really enjoyed sprucing up tables with unique and fun touches that help incorporate my overall theme!
I love adding fresh plants to my décor whenever I can –especially in the spring and summer seasons. Succulents, terrarium gardens, air plants, palms, and moss are all items that I enjoy sprinkling in to add a natural and charming touch. Not only is this a bit more practical and can be reused several times for events, but it also requires very minimal maintenance, so you don’t have to worry about wilted or mis-colored florals throughout the night. The next unique centerpiece that I love to rotate through is adding fresh fruit and vegetables into my tablescapes. Who says centerpieces can’t be both beautiful and delicious? Especially in the summer season, I enjoy using bright citrus colors (such as grapefruits, lemons, and limes) and use them either as compliments to my floral arrangements, or as the main focal point. Display them as either whole fruit or cut them into slices
or wedges for a fun pop of color.
Lastly, I like to use vintage-inspired trinkets to dress up my dining centerpieces. This can either be books, frames, jars, or antique silver that adds a bit more character to a table-set up. I love to find vintage, mismatched pieces and make them work together. This idea is especially fun for small themed-dinners, cocktail receptions, and book clubs.
From my table to yours, I hope you have just as much fun with your summer centerpieces this year as I have with mine!

AN INTERVIEW WITH
GARY GAUTHIER
Assistant Clubhouse Manager Sam Brookshire sat down with the friendliest face at Charlotte Country Club, Gary from the Greeting Center! Rain or shine, you can always count on Gary to greet you with a wave and a smile as you pull up to the Club. Gary is an integral part of our team and we are excited to share more of his story with you! Next time you pull into the Club, be sure to roll down your window and give him a wave back!
SB: Tell us a little about your background.
GG: I’m from New York, and got into the industry at the age of 14, when I was the first tee starter at my parents’ club. I immediately loved the atmosphere and being around golf. While bar tending in various restaurants during college, a family friend reached out and asked me to come bartend for him at his club. I moved right away, and was so excited to be back in the business. About a year later, a team member I had become good friends with left his role at the Club. Upon his departure, I was approached by a Board Member who said “Gary, I think you could do his job,” and at 25 years old somehow became the Clubhouse Manager. Safe to say that opportunity kick started the rest of my career in the industry.
SB: What are some other fond memories from your career in private clubs? GG: I actually owned a club with my brother up in Auburn, New York, for about 12 years. The club was about to go under when we were approached by the owner to see if we were interested in buying it. We had to take out a loan, so right off the bat, we were in the hole about $200,000, but grew the club from 50 members to over 250 within three years, and it ended up being a great learning experience. I loved being my own boss!
I was also the General Manager of Skaneateles Country Club in Syracuse, New York, which was a great club with great people. One of the biggest projects during my time there came when the clubhouse burned to the ground. The fire broke out on Mother’s Day night, but we worked quickly and were able to reopen the clubhouse the following year on the Fourth of July. It was an eye-opening experience; I sat with all of the committees and worked through the plans for rebuilding. At one point I asked myself “what am I doing here, in the same room with all these millionaires and billionaires,” but I could offer important operational insight that they didn’t have. For example, I had to fight hard for a bigger kitchen on the blueprint and worked with Chef to map out every piece of equipment by hand with a ruler. The kitchen still has the same layout to this day, so I guess we did something right.
SB: What brought you to CCC?
GG: My kids had all moved to the Charlotte area, so I moved down from New York without even having a job lined up. I just knew I wanted to be closer to my kids. I found an opening as a bartender in the Men’s Locker Room at CCC and only worked a few weeks before the manager at the time said I’d probably be better suited as a Greeter. 12 years later, and here I still am!
SB: 12 years is a long time! What has kept you here for so long?
GG: I really love the people here. The people I work with, the people I work for, and of course the members. For most of my career, I’ve been the boss. That's not the case here, but I still feel valued and respected by both teammates and members. I also enjoy working on a team where everyone wants to make things better.
The members are great too, and I’ve loved building relationships over the years. There’s a member who stops to say hello every time he comes by the club, and used to always be accompanied by his young daughter. She is grown and driving herself now, but still always stops to say hi. There’s a time I remember a little boy crying at the end of his driveway nearby after falling off his bike. Now he’s 25 and out here playing golf all the time. I also love the dog walkers! Giving the dogs treats and petting them is a highlight of my day.
SB: In your mind, what set's CCC apart from other clubs?
GG: I think it’s the overall atmosphere of excellence and teamwork. Everyone has a lot of pride in what they do, no matter what department they work in. I met one of my best friends through CCC, Howard, who retired last year, we still talk and have lunch regularly. He will be a lifelong friend. We also prioritize hiring the best people. It’s not a rush to fill an open position, we wait until we find the right person for the job and team. The membership is also truly caring and appreciative of the team. The BOG golf outing is one of the best events that we do because it allows teammates to bond with members in a different way. The future of CCC is very bright because of this, and we will just continue to get better and better. What else could you want from a job?

BARTENDER COMPETITION
Last summer, our bar tending team was given the opportunity to showcase some of their favorite recipes in a friendly team competition. Each bartender had creative flexibility to build a cocktail and have it featured for one week in all of our dining rooms. A wide variety of cocktails were featured, and our team had lots of fun featuring a new special each week!
Our winner last year was Kalynn who took home first with her “Peachy Keen Bourbon Bliss” cocktail which was crafted 46 times campus-wide during the week! In second place came Danny’s “Jalapeno Diablo” cocktail, and Sandy came in third showcasing the ”Casafresca” cocktail! This fun competition will be making a comeback this summer! Our team of bartenders will be featuring their creations for one week each during the competition, running from mid-July to mid-August.
We hope you'll come support your bar tending team, and maybe find a new favorite beverage!

AN UPDATE ON INDOOR TENNIS
Construction is continuing to progress on our Outdoor Tennis Facility! The steel framing of the structure has been erected, and the structure is really starting to take shape. We have also begun building a foot bridge which will connect the tennis shop to the future indoor tennis facility.
Building crews are making great progress and are currently on track to finish by the end of the year. Next time you find yourself near the tennis shop, be sure to take a look over and see all the progress that has taken place on this exciting new addition to our campus!
TENNIS SHOP CORNER
Tennis Shop Corner turned Swim Corner! Come check out this new section of the shop to fulfill all your summer swim needs. This will be a fun section of the shop for both ladies and children. The ladies’ section will feature Sand Cloud products which include beach towels, cover-ups, and bags. This company is known for its 100% organic cotton products.
The children’s section will feature colorful CCC rash guards, and, of course, pool toys! We look forward to this fun addition to the tennis shop for our members
June is the month to update your shoes and tennis bags. The entire month they are 25% off! Come check us out!
Whether you are hitting the pool or hitting the courts this summer, be sure to stop by the tennis shop for everything you could need!

TIPS FROM THE PRO
CHRISTIAAN LEE DIAGLE, Tennis Professional
Have you ever been in a close match and suddenly crumbled under pressure? Have you won the first set and thought: "Golly, I'm going to win!", only to lose the next two sets? As much as technique and strokes are important in the game of tennis, the mental side is just as crucial. Let's cover some focus points to help strengthen your mental game:
Rituals and Routines | Rituals and routines are great ways to help focus, calm yourself, or pump you up at various times during a match. Fixing your strings between points to calm your nerves, bouncing the ball before serves to get "in the zone", fist pumping after an important point to re-energize, these are all great examples of things players do to help them stay in the moment.
Stay in the Moment | It is so important to stay in the present moment on the tennis court. If you dwell too long on a point you should have won, or a volley that you should have made to win the point, or you worry about letting your teammates down if you lose your match, it will consume you and your positive energy throughout much of the match. The same thing goes when you are winning and get overconfident. A player could be up a set and then easily lose the next two if they start thinking that they have already won the match. Instead, focus your mental energy on winning one point at a time in order to stay present and stay in control.
Control What You Can Control | The wind, the sun, the court conditions, bad bounces, let cords, construction behind the courts... These are all examples of things you cannot control. Focus instead on things you can; keep your footwork active to get in better position when it is windy, toss the ball in a different spot when serving in the sun, expect bad bounces to happen and accept that it may happen again, focus on listening to the ball hit your strings or exhale loudly to drown out the construction noise.
Think Positive | Tennis can be the most wonderful sport in the world some days then feel like the most difficult and grueling the next. Remember that you are there to compete and have fun. Enjoy the thrill of the competition and build yourself up. Thinking positively will allow you to relax and to play with confidence. Remove the self-doubt from your mind and tell yourself "I've got this!" before your next big point.
All in all, these tips will help you throughout your matches if you are consistent in applying them. Continue practicing your technical play on the court to build confidence in your strokes. Stay strong, build endurance, and add flexibility to maximize your physical abilities. All of these skills together will help you to become a more "complete" player as you grow all parts of your game.
Good luck in your upcoming matches players! Stay mentally strong out there and be confident!

AN UPDATE ON THE MACK FERGUSON GOLF FACILITY GOLF
As our members are aware, golf cart storage and member golf bag storage will be moving from the current cart storage facility and bag room facility to the new Mack Ferguson Golf Cart Storage Facility located adjacent to the Golf House. This is exciting news for the Golf Staff as we will be able to better service our membership in many ways. Here are a few highlights that the new facility will bring:
1. We will increase our current cart fleet from 55 carts to 72 carts. We will also have two more of our transportation carts (6 and 4-seater carts).
2. All member golf bags will be stored in the new building. We plan to have a communication system that will enable members to directly contact the Golf Cart Facility Manager to get his/her golf bag on the cart before their arrival to the club.
3. The daily staging procedures for our golf carts/golf bags will take place on the stone wall at the practice area (similar to a shotgun start during golf events).
4. The Outside Golf Operation staff will now be focused on the range vs. on the 1st tee. This will allow us to service everyone on the range in a better fashion while also improving our 1st tee experience, relieving the clutter and noise that you currently experience.
5. After your golf round, carts will be returned near the staging area allowing for better flow for players going to the locker rooms or dining areas.
We are excited to present this experience to everyone and we look forward to improving the service to our members!

Summer is the perfect time to update your golf shirt collection! Every brand usually offers a couple of different performance fabrics perfect for the warm weather. A jersey fabric has a smoother feel, while a pique (sometimes called "mesh") is another option with more of a texture. Both will be breathable and moisture-wicking, but you may have a preference between the two. Be sure to stop by the shop and find your favorites, we've stocked both options for you to try!
Ladies, as you work on your golf game this summer, we wanted to give a quick reminder on the dress code. This is a common question, and we want to help you feel comfortable in your apparel selection. If your shirt has a collar, it does not need to have sleeves. If your shirt has sleeves, it does not need a collar. We've carefully selected some great options for sleeveless, short-sleeve, and
long-sleeve sun protection tops to cover your every need.
Back-to-School shopping will soon be on the mind as summer soon comes to an end. We always offer youth apparel in the golf shop, but can also help special-order more shirts (with or without a CCC logo) to get the kids ready for the school year!
Special ordering is a breeze, and I'm happy to help find whatever it is your closet is lacking! Please reach out at LSusen@charlottecountryclub.org
