A LETTER FROM THE

GENERAL MANAGER Dear Members, As we say farewell to 2023 and welcome in a new year, we have much to be grateful for: a beautiful new pool facility, a bright and friendly casual dining outlet, and a family center for all to enjoy. With so many new amenities open and bustling, opportunities to gather at your club abound, and we look forward to creating many more memories with you in 2024. Our leadership team has been diligently planning the 2024 calendar packing it full of favorite member events, family activities, and tennis and golf tournaments. Please review the schedule in this issue and make note of the events you’d like to join us for. A few highlights include the widely requested tequila tasting in March, new Pickleball tournaments throughout the year, and a special leap year speakeasy cocktail reception. I would like to highlight the Annual Meeting of the Membership, taking place Tuesday, February 20. This is a wonderful opportunity to receive updates and stay informed on Club operations, governance items, and strategic plans on the horizon. Your Board will discuss membership levels, finances, capital planning, and more. Directly following the meeting is the New Member Party. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet our newest members and warmly welcome them to the Club. I hope you enjoy this first issue of 2024, from tips on golf fitness to finding the perfect beer for your Superbowl party. As always please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any feedback, suggestions, or information you would like to see in the next issue. I look forward to seeing you at the Club and am excited to welcome another incredible year with you! Respectfully,

Priscilla Eich GM/COO

STAFF NEWS STAFF SPOTLIGHT: HOUSEKEEPING TEAM When other club professionals visit Charlotte Country Club, they often comment on the pristine conditions of our Clubhouse and surrounding buildings. How do we keep such a large operation beautifully clean? If you can believe it, we have three ladies that consist of our housekeeping team, keeping the Club sparkling. Roselia (center) has been on our team longest – 17 years! She is originally from El Salvador. Also hailing from El Salvador is Marisol (left), who has been with the Club for 14 years. Our newest addition to the team is Olinda (right). She joined the team in March 2023 and is from Peru. Together, they have a big job! They perform a variety of cleaning assignments throughout the entire clubhouse such as sweeping, mopping, light dusting, and so much more. To give a glimpse into just one of their many roles, these ladies make sure the member bathrooms in the Clubhouse, pool complex, Family Center, The Porch, the Tennis Shop, and the Golf House are clean and well stocked with toiletries. Overall, our campus has 23 restrooms and three cabanas that our Housekeeping team is responsible for. On top of that, they also help with additional duties such as cleaning baseboard and sconces and helping out in the laundry facility with folding towels, pressing linens, and more. Needless to say, these are some of the hardest working ladies at the Club! Thank you Rosalia, Marisol, and Olinda!

LOOKING BACK

ITALIAN WINE DINNER

Mid-September in Charlotte is a time to soak up the last few days of summer and prepare for the bustling fall season ahead. However, on the Amalfi Coast, September is the peak time to visit. A traveler can expect beautiful weather without the summer crowds. For our Italian Wine Dinner this past September, we transported attendees to the Amalfi Coast to create a memorable evening

for all. The event began with an al fresco aperitif and music on the terrace. There’s nothing like a spritz cocktail to make you feel like you’re in Italy! The dinner continued in the Pine Room with Orsini Wines and a wonderful Italian inspired menu. Our team is passionate about creating a special ambiance, and we look forward to continuing to create memorable evenings through our wine dinners. KATY DINGMAN Event Planner

DINING & SOCIAL LOOKING BACK AT THE GAME DINNER UNDER THE OAK

Brainstorming and planning the details for a wine dinner is always a fun and creative outlet for the Event Planning team, but perhaps one of the most challenging, yet rewarding wine dinners to date was the Game Dinner Under the Oak this past October. As with any wine dinner event, the Event Planners first drafted up what they call a “mood board” to gain inspiration for décor, entertainment, and the overall event vibe. We then collaborated with other departments and vendors to bring the vision of the event to life!

FROM MOOD BOARD

In this case, the Game Dinner was inspired by a beautiful, cozy, bohemian fall dinner with market lights, mismatched rugs, and a combination of dried and fresh autumn florals. With the helpful hands of four outside vendors, two managers, nine service team members, nine culinarians, and six facilities team members, the Event Planning team was able to take a once-digital mood board and create a magical evening for members to enjoy!

DINING & SOCIAL WHAT'S YOUR PERFECT SUPER BOWL BEER? NATHAN LAMB, Assistant Clubhouse Manager

As February closely approaches, the Super Bowl is looming large. Will it be a rematch of Chiefs vs. Eagles, or will a new contender take the crown? Although the teams for the main event aren’t certain quiet yet, you can always count on beer to make an appearance. It is believed that across the United States, there are approximately 325 million gallons of beer consumed during the Super Bowl; that equates to 3.47 billion 12 oz. beers countrywide! Lucky for us, we have quite a few terrific options to choose from here in Charlotte. With over 75 breweries in the city, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Here are a couple favorites from the team.

DINING & SOCIAL ADULT POOL BAR PROGRESS REPORT

Although the pool season just came to a close in September, we are already starting projects for the 2024 season. Most notably, the construction of a permanent bar at the Adult Pool! The addition of the bar will allow for more seating around the pool – with the 10 barstools around the bar and four high-top tables. This new feature will also allow Members an alternative location to order poolside beverages without leaving the Adult Pool. Construction started in October and is well under way – a finish has been chosen for the inside of the bar, the backdrop, the outside paneling of the bar and the bar top itself! We are confident that the addition of the bar will enhance your pool experience and we look forward to showing construction progress along the way!

ONE YEAR AT THE PORCH It’s hard to believe that The Porch has been open for one full year! We have loved seeing our members and their families utilize this space. Ever since it opened in February of 2023, this new restaurant has been a smashing success. The Porch has especially been a hit with lunch and brunch. In its first year, this venue had 11,280 covers between opening day and October. This is especially impressive given the fact that the Grill and Patio combined only served 6,571 covers the year prior. The Porch has also been a great revenue source for the Club. From February to October, this restaurant has generated $1,012,777! Thank you to all our members who have supported this restaurant. We look forward to offering you many more memorable meals in year two!

TIPS FROM THE PRO JOHN MEYER Tennis Professional

When our opponent misses their first serve, we can assume the second will be more conservative to avoid double faulting, providing a great opportunity to attack. Returning the second serve is all about taking control of the point and putting pressure on your opponent. Adapt your strategy based on their weaknesses and your own strengths as a returner. 1. Be aggressive – the second serve is typically weaker / great opportunity to attack. 2. Returner should move up in the court – look for a short serve. 3. Pay attention to the opponent’s service motion and anticipate where they might serve. 4. Aim deep and cross court to minimize your opponent’s angles. 5. Mix up the return - occasionally go down-the-line /at the net player to keep them guessing. 6. Stay balanced to generate power and control your shot.

TENNIS CCC THROUGH THE YEARS

AN INTERVIEW WITH JULIE FRANCIS Julie Francis has been a member of the CCC tennis team since 1984! With a 39year tenure, she is an institution at the Tennis Shop and is known and loved by our members for her tenacity, quick wit, and warm hospitality. Julie provides a recollection of some of her favorite CCC memories.

How did you become a member of the team? Mr. Keith Stoneman was the tennis committee chairman who was responsible for hiring Bill (Julie’s husband, the Tennis Director for 36 years). The tennis committee flew Bill up here from Florida and after his initial interview they flew me up as his wife during his final interview. Mr. Stoneman walked me around the Clubhouse and showed me the Men’s Grill. I went “What?? Where do the women and kids eat? That doesn’t seem fair.” Meanwhile, Bill is nudging me to stop! Mr. Stoneman laughed, as I'm sure he saw the nudge. When they hired Bill, he asked if his family could play tennis at the Club. So, Mr. Stoneman went to the Board and made us honorary members so we could use the facilities. Our children grew up here…our daughter was on the swim team; our son learned to play golf here, and now is the lead instructor at Sawgrass Country Club. I was able to play on our Ladies’ Interclub teams for years. We really were treated like part of the CCC Family, the Club embraced our entire family. Later, Mr. Stoneman asked if I would like to work here, and that he would go to the Board and make it happen. I am not sure he was expecting 39 years! What did the Tennis Facilities look like in 1984? Well, we were over in the old shop (near the squash courts) and this (current shop) was all grass and trees. The new shop opened in 1989 during the same week as Hurricane Hugo…we didn’t have power for two weeks!

The only tree lost was the one we built the deck around, and it was laying over the fence. Bill had to take a chainsaw and cut the branches so we could move everything from the old shop to the new shop. It was quite an experience! The walkway was all dirt before we had cement put in. There were benches out in front of the clay courts where you could go and watch play…we’ve come a long way. What is one of your most impactful memories? When I first started at the Club, I met a wonderful member, Mrs. Mayer. She and Dr. Mayer were incredible people. I asked her about the Carriage Club, and told her my 95 year old grandmother was new to the community…you know, just making conversation. Dr. Mayer in his early 90s himself was still playing tennis and asked if my grandmother played, saying they could always use a fourth! A few days later I was visiting my grandmother, and she said a wonderful woman had stopped in with flowers and welcomed her to Charlotte. Of course, they were from Mrs. Mayer. She had gone out of her way to go to the residence and find my grandmother. That was my first experience with the members at CCC, and it really set the tone for the special relationship we have with our members. We were home! What is your favorite part about working at CCC? The best part is working with the members every day. It’s just been a great life. Mr. Stoneman always told us “If you take care of us, we’ll take care of you,” and that’s the way it’s always been. They have really embraced me as I get older. Members will ask when I’m retiring and if I’ll make it to 45 years at the Club. I’ll joke about needing a walker by then and they always say “that’s okay, we’ll help you! We don’t want you to leave!” That’s the kind of love I’m feeling…I feel it every day. What does hospitality mean to you? It’s a friendly service. It’s taking care of people and things with love. It’s making sure people get what they need, but is also a very friendly thing. Hospitality is warmth, making people feel at home… and that’s what I try to do in here. I’m not afraid to talk to anybody and make them feel welcome.

TIPS FROM THE PRO: GOLF FITNESS

There are many times swing flaws and inconsistencies come from our physical limitations and weaknesses. Physical barriers can keep us from swinging and playing our best, and often lead to pain and tightness after or during the round. The first step in improving your golf fitness is identifying the areas of weakness that may be causing poor swing mechanics. Many people struggle with posture and balance throughout the swing. These are great examples of physical dysfunctions that can cause swing flaws and compensations. If we are not in an athletic posture at address, it will be challenging to make a dynamic and balanced turn. If our balance is off or inconsistent, it will be difficult to rotate properly and create speed. We need to have mobility and stability to maintain proper posture and balance throughout the swing. Taking time to stretch and do dynamic movements before you play will prepare you to perform at your best. By taking your body through a true physical “warm-up” you will gain fluidity, speed, and maintain energy on the course. This will not only help you to swing your best but will also prevent injuries as well. Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) is a great resource that has a collection of drills, exercises, and stretches that are golf specific. The website (www.mytpi.com) is a great educational tool to better understand how your body functions in relation to the golf swing. You can also have a TPI screening done to test your mobility and stability, and come up with a specific golf fitness plan that is right for you. DREW PERRY, Golf Teaching Professional
