A NEWSLETTER FOR PARENTS OF CHARLOTTE LATIN ALUMNI

Greetings, Parents of Alumni, When my older child, Griffin, decided to study abroad this year at Radboud University in Nijmegen*, the Netherlands, I was thrilled for him. Nevermind that I hadn’t heard of the university or the town – much less know how to pronounce it! After bidding him farewell on August 13 – while trying to hide my nervousness - and posting the obligatory picture on Facebook, I received a message from Peggy Kane Thies ’96 saying that she had also studied abroad at Radboud and loved her experience. That immediately set me at ease. Then in September, as we honored the second class of CLS Athletic Hall of Fame inductees which included Elizabeth Barnhardt ’91, I of course talked about Griffin being abroad. Coincidentally, Elizabeth lives in Nijmegen six months out of the year. She was my number one resource as I planned our family’s Thanksgiving trip to this lovely place. Griffin returned to Charlotte two days before Christmas. Before heading back to Chapel Hill, he visited with the Latin history department to share stories of his travels. And wouldn’t you know it – Upper School history teacher Karen Glenn’s former in-laws live in Nijmegen. There so many Latin connections to this small city 4,000 miles from Charlotte. We are all part of the Charlotte Latin family and it’s an interesting pattern we weave across the globe. Let’s do a better job of keeping in touch. Go Hawks! TRIBUTE TO FOUNDING TRUSTEE

Founding Trustee Bob Knight, Trustee Ruth Knight Gammon ’77, and Chris Gammon Last October, nearly 75 attendees joined in fellowship and celebration at the annual CLS Board of Visitors Social. Part of this meeting was designated to recognize our last living Founding Trustee, Mr. Robert V. Knight, Jr. who turned 88 on October 27! Mr. Knight was surprised as he watched a short video prepared in his honor. It was very special to share in the moment, not only with Mr. Knight, but all of those surrounding - family, friends, and the many familiar faces of a community to which he gave whole-heartedly. STUDENT SERVICE LEADERSHIP SPOTLIGHT: MOLLY GREEN ’17 Molly Green ’17 is a standout student service leader at Charlotte Latin and in the community. By February of her senior year she has completed more than 570 hours of community service during her four years of high school, a number that will continue to grow in the days and months ahead. Molly’s main focus is supporting the Humane Society of Charlotte (HSC), a passion she discovered early on as a young child. Initially, Molly earned money to donate by doing chores and setting up lemonade stands. Wanting to do even more, but too young to volunteer in a shelter and too allergic to be able to adopt an animal herself, Molly graduated to organizing a dinner and silent auction under the moniker “Paws for the Cause.” Her first event, held when she was only 13 years old, raised nearly $1,500. Last summer, the fourth year of the now annual dinner and auction, she raised more than eight Last spring, the HSC honored Molly with an award for times that amount. To her lifelong commitment to this organization at the date, Molly has raised third annual Women for Animal Welfare Luncheon. nearly $25,000 in Pictured (left to right): Event Host and WBTV anchor support of the HSC. Maureen O’Boyle, Dr. Topher Gee, Molly Green ’17, and HSC President and CEO Shelly Moore. But Molly did not stop at fundraising. As a junior at Charlotte Latin School, Molly created a “Paws for the Cause” student organization which focuses on raising awareness about pet ownership and care. Her teacher and club advisor, Dr. Topher Gee, calls Molly a shining example of passion and compassion. He shares, “Molly’s warmth and gentle nature foster collaboration, while her organizational skills efficiently maximize impact. What I have seen in Molly is a harbinger of a lifetime spent making a difference.”

OBSERVE & SERVE The Observe and Serve Senior Project provides members of the Senior class with an opportunity to extend learning beyond the walls of Latin into the greater community. It is a three-day, unpaid internship during which Seniors can explore a career area of interest or volunteer for a non-profit organization. The 2017 project dates are May 22-24, and the students are required to work or serve a minimum of 15 hours. This program is a wonderful opportunity to connect with current Latin students and show the strength of our greater Charlotte Latin network. Please contact Sally Smith, ssmith@charlottelatin.org, if you can sponsor a Latin senior for this 3-day project in May.
