VISION 2O2O BRINGING LATIN’S FUTURE INTO FOCUS

Thank you for contributing your time and thoughts to Vision2020, Charlotte Latin’s capital campaign. That’s right, Vision2020! We believe that, as we approach the School’s 50th anniversary, this theme is fitting. It is important for our School leaders to have a clear vision for the future, while building upon the strong foundation established in 1970 by the founders of Charlotte Latin School. Charlotte Latin strives to pay close attention to the evolving needs in the classroom and beyond so that we continue preparing our students for life after Latin. We look ahead with excitement, yet also with careful consideration of the School’s most fundamental needs. This first campaign newsletter is our opportunity to share with you our success thus far. To date, we are pleased to report that more than $9 million has been pledged in this nucleus, or “silent”, phase of our campaign and we are grateful for those who have made early and generous commitments. The plans for the future are in clear focus. Your support makes it possible to carry out this vision.

INSIDE THE CAMPAIGN

with Campaign Chairs Heather and Tom Finke P ’13, ’17, ’19, ’20 What about the campaign plans inspired you to say yes when called to serve as chairs of this effort? Our family knows that a fine K-12 education is the first step toward self-sufficiency, as well as for community and global prosperity. The leadership component of Vision2020 is vital. Just as Latin is led by many outstanding people prompting our School’s success, so too do our communities and the world need fine leaders. Intentionally focusing the Student Leadership Program in the center of campus allows opportunities for lower and middle schoolers, as well as their upper school mentors. Why is now a good time for Charlotte Latin to launch a capital campaign? With anxiety increasing virtually everywhere, it is our responsibility as a School to assess our programs and facilities. After doing so, we feel it is critical to: • Provide space for additional classes and expanding curriculum, as well as student/teacher meetings and tutoring. • Add practice fields and look at resurfacing at least one field to address the growing number of student athletes and provide flexibility, accessibility, and options for inclement weather impact. In some cases, this will help shorten the school day so athletes can get home earlier to focus on homework and family time. • Create permanent space for our Hawks Club Extended Day program which supports the School’s growing number of dual-working families. • Increase security measures within our 128-acre campus. What are you most excited about in Vision2020? There is something for everyone in the Vision2020 Campaign. The priorities have been analyzed in great detail and planned with great thought. Input from parents, teachers, students, alumni, administrators, and trustees has been considered throughout the process. We are excited because we feel that this is an effort that all of the School’s constituencies can get behind and will be pleased to support. The end result will mean an even better School for our children, our children’s children, and for generations to come.

BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS UPDATE Charlotte Latin School is in the design phase of the Upper School/Administration building and has conducted initial meetings with Little & Associates, our campaign architects. They also presented early design concepts around campus security, athletics, student leadership, Hawks Club, and Media Center upgrades. Choate Construction has been retained as our general contractor for the projects. On September 12, a milestone meeting was held for the Buildings and Grounds Committee of the Board when Little presented preliminary design, budget, and permitting needs. There was no vote, but it was the first meeting that conveyed the building and schematic work completed over the summer. This report was also presented to the full Board of Trustees on September 19. The Buildings and Grounds Committee reconvened on October 26 for a presentation from Little where concerns noted and questions raised at the September meeting were addressed. They presented options for the Hawks Club Extended Day facility and an update on the most current design process for the Upper School/Administration building. Little also addressed parking options and storm drainage issues. A report was again presented to the Board of Trustees on November 7. During the nucleus phase, the School will work with lead investors to raise a significant portion of the construction costs. Depending upon the results of the concurrent fundraising and facilities planning tracks, the construction will begin in either June of 2017 or 2018. As in previous campaigns, “transition” plans will be developed once the architectural plans and construction schedules are confirmed. Because some of our projects involve the renovation or replacement of classroom facilities, we will likely have to employ temporary classrooms during the construction period. Due to the extensive Upper School course expansion for 2016-17, the School has already contracted the use of a 6-classroom modular building to accommodate the additional classes.

THE THURSTON COLLECTION PREVIEW EVENT Former Latin Parents and Alumnus Support Vision2020 Through Their Estate Gift

More than 200 people, including members of the Charlotte Latin community, gathered at The Duke Mansion on September 7 to preview The Thurston Collection. All members of the Latin family with an interest in the collection were encouraged to attend. Stella and Doc Thurston were early supporters of Charlotte Latin School, as their son, Doc (1964-2015), was a member of Charlotte Latin’s Class of 1982. Several of Doc’s classmates were in attendance. Charlotte Latin is one of three beneficiaries of The Thurston Collection and the estate gift will support the Vision2020 Campaign. The private collection of Stella Thurston (1925-2015) and her husband, D. Jones “Doc” Thurston, Jr. (1908-1993), will be offered through Doyle in New York City during the Fall 2016 auction season (visit www.Doyle.com and search “Thurston” for auction dates and offerings). Mr. Thurston was a captain of industry in the motor carrier and aviation fields. Mrs. Thurston devoted herself to philanthropic work and her carefully curated collection. The Thurston Collection is comprised of the contents of the Thurston’s historic Eastover and Grandfather Mountain homes, where Mrs. Thurston entertained family and friends with warm, southern hospitality. “The Thurston family members were generous and devoted supporters of Charlotte Latin School. Doc Jr. served on the Board from 1979-1982, coinciding with Doc III’s graduation from the School. After Doc Jr.’s death in the mid-90s, Stella and their son Doc III remained devoted to Latin through volunteerism, philanthropy, and event hosting. To those of us who planned the opening of Charlotte Latin School, Stella’s home will always be a warm memory, as it was just a stone’s throw away from that brick wall in Eastover where the idea of Charlotte Latin began over casual conversations. We are so grateful that Charlotte Latin will benefit from the sale of the Thurston estate.” - Mr. Bob Knight, Founding Trustee of Charlotte Latin School
