How can six partners from across Northern France, Belgium and the UK raise awareness of the First World War Commemoration together? By selecting six common themes and presenting them within six travelling exhibitions: music, family, British troops, total war, hidden stories and military logistics. By placing these exhibitions in public spaces we bring the history of the Great War to you. This exhibition is part of the European’Great War - Between the Lines’ project, which aims to raise awareness of the Great War and its Centenary commemorations.

1916, THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME For the British Army, 1916 undeniably remains attached to the Battle of the Somme which began on 1 July and mobilized the majority of troops. De 1ste slag van Cambrai

De eerste slag van Cambrai vond plaats van 20 november tot 7 december 1917. Tijdens dit offensief van de Britten, werd voor de eerste keer gebruik gemaakt van Mark IV tanks. Op dat moment was de meerderheid van de Duitse troepen gemobiliseerd op andere slagvelden zoals Vlaanderen en de Chemin des Dames. In de Pas-de-Calais Terwijl 1916 vooral in het teken stond van het Somme-offensief, vonden er in 1917 opnieuw grote offensieven in Pas-de-Calais plaats. Tijdens de Slag bij Arras (april -juni 1917) onderscheidden de Canadezen zich in Vimy. Het Australische leger stuitte op hevig verzet bij Bullecourt.

Tijdens de Duitse aanval in de lente van 1918 streden de Britten aan het Leiefront. De geallieerde tegenoffensieven, die vanaf de zomer van 1918 werden ingezet, kondigden het begin van de Duitse terugtrekking aan en leidden uiteindelijk tot de overwinning.

While 1916 was mainly noted for the Somme offensive, 1917 marked a return to major offensives in the Pas-de-Calais region. During the Battle of Arras (April-June 1917), the Canadians came to the fore in Vimy, and the Australians faced violent opposition at Bullecourt.

During the German offensive in spring 1918, the British fought on the front line in the Battle of the Lys. The allied counter-offensives launched in the summer of 1918 marked the beginning of the German retreat leading to final allied victory.

Alors que 1916 est principalement marquée par l’offensive de la Somme, l’année 1917 marque le retour aux grandes offensives dans le Pas-de-Calais. Lors de la Bataille d’Arras (avril-juin 1917), les Canadiens s’illustrent à Vimy.

Moeder, vader en kind in de Groote Oorlog

Tijdens de oorlog wisselde het dagelijkse leven van de infanterist tussen periodes aan het front en periodes die in de achterste linies werden doorgebracht. In de loopgraven waren het gevaar en de dood alomtegenwoordig. De bombardementen zaaiden dood en vernieling, en hun psychologische impact was al even verwoestend. Ook de weersomstandigheden bemoeilijkten in grote mate het leven van de soldaten. Vooral de koude en de vochtigheid waren gevreesd.

THE DAILY ROUTINE OF A TOMMY ON THE FRONT...

During the war, the daily routine of an infantryman alternated between spells on the front line and periods spent in the rear echelon. In the trenches, danger and death were constant companions. Often deadly, the artillery bombardments had an equally destructive psychological impact. Climatic conditions also greatly complicated the lives of the fighters.

Cold and damp were especially feared.

Durant la guerre, le quotidien du fantassin alterne entre séjours sur le front et périodes passées à l’arrière.

Dans les tranchées, le danger et la mort sont omniprésents. Souvent meurtriers, les bombardements d’artillerie ont un impact psychologique tout aussi destructeur.

Les conditions climatiques compliquent aussi grandement la vie des combattants. Le froid et l’humidité sont particulièrement redoutés.

Behind the lines, the troops worked in stationing and training areas. There were nevertheless a few relaxing moments in the life of a Tommy. Many of them liked the conviviality of the French taverns and enjoyed taking part in sporting activities.

In augustus 1914 werden de Britse troepen door de Franse bevolking enthousiast onthaald. De soldaten waren over het algemeen voorkomend jegens de inwoners, en organiseerden feesten en liefdadigheidsmanifestaties. Ook bij de jeugd waren de tommy’s populair.

Burgers en ingekwartierde militairen gingen vaak vriendschappelijk met elkaar om.

Dès août 1914, les troupes britanniques reçoivent de la part de la population française un accueil enthousiaste. En retour, les soldats se montrent souvent prévenants à l’égard des habitants en organisant des manifestations festives ou caritatives. Le Tommy est aussi apprécié des plus jeunes. Chez l’habitant, des liens d’amitié se créent avec le militaire hébergé.

Régulièrement, l’armée britannique apporte son aide aux autorités françaises dans des domaines variés: main d’œuvre, attelages, soins. Sur le plan financier, des accords franco-britanniques permettent à certaines municipalités de bénéficier de droits d’octroi.

La présence de plusieurs milliers de soldats sur le territoire contribue aussi à alimenter le commerce local.

LE SOUVENIR DE LA PRÉSENCE BRITANNIQUE

Na de wapenstilstand in november 1918 moesten er voorbereidselen worden getroffen voor de repatriëring van de Britse troepen die aan het westelijk front hadden gestreden. Vier jaren van Britse aanwezigheid hebben tal van sporen nagelaten op het grondgebied, dat een van de belangrijkste plaatsen is geworden voor de Britse nagedachtenis aan de Grote Oorlog.

Het Cambridgeshire ‘Coming Home’ Memorial Het Cambridgeshire ‘Coming Home’ Memorial werd opgericht aan het einde van de weg naar het station. Een locatie waarlangs alle Cambridgeshire troepen zouden gepasseerd zijn bij hun terugkeer naar huis. Het monument toont een soldaten die terugkijkt naar Cambridge Station terwijl hij naar huis wandelt. Het werd ontworpen door de architect George Hubbard en de beeldhouwer dr. Robert Tait Mckenzie.

As soon as Armistice was declared in November 1918, preparations for repatriating the British troops who had been fighting on the Western Front got underway. After four years, many traces of the British presence remained on the territories, and many sites have become important for the remembrance of British victims of the Great War.

CAMBRIDGESHIRE “COMING HOME” MEMORIAL The Cambridgeshire “Coming Home” Memorial was erected at the end of Station road to mark a location that all Cambridgeshire troops coming back from the Front would have passed on their return home. The memorial shows a soldier looking back towards Cambridge Station as he walks home. It was designed by the architect George Hubbard and the sculptor Dr Robert Tait Mckenzie. HRH the Duke of York unveiled the memorial on the 3rd of July 1923.

Au lendemain de l’armistice de novembre 1918, l’heure est désormais à la préparation du rapatriement des troupes britanniques qui ont combattu sur le front ouest. DE LAATSTE REIS VAN DE BRITSE ONBEKENDE SOLDAAT In 1920 beslisten Frankrijk en Groot-Brittannië het stoffelijk overschot van een onbekende soldaat te verheffen tot symbool van alle doden van de Grote Oorlog. Begin november werden op de slagvelden van het westelijk front verscheidene lichamen van nietgeïdentificeerde tommy’s opgegraven. Een van hen werd door het lot aangeduid om alle Britse onbekende soldaten te belichamen. Het stoffelijk overschot werd eerst naar Boulogne gebracht en vervolgens ingescheept richting Dover. Op 11 november 1920 om 11 uur werd het lichaam van de Britse onbekende soldaat in Londen in de hoofdbeuk van de abdij van Westminster begraven.

FINAL JOURNEY OF THE UNKNOWN BRITISH SOLDIER In 1920, France and the United Kingdom decided to honour an unknown dead soldier to represent all those who died in the Great War. At the beginning of November, the bodies of several unidentified Tommies were exhumed from various battlefields on the West Front.

Then one of them was designated at random to represent the unknown British soldier.

The body was escorted to Boulogne, where it was put on board of a ship for Dover. On 11 November 1920, at 11 hours, the body of the unknown British soldier was interred in the nave of Westminster Abbey, in London.

L’ULTIME VOYAGE DU SOLDAT INCONNU BRITANNIQUE En 1920, France et Grande Bretagne décident d’élever au rang de symbole des morts de la Guerre la dépouille d’un soldat inconnu. Début novembre, plusieurs corps de Tommies non identifiés sont exhumés des différents champs de bataille du front ouest. L’un d’entre eux est alors désigné au hasard pour devenir celui du soldat inconnu britannique. Acheminée vers Boulogne, la dépouille est embarquée à destination de Douvres. Le 11 novembre 1920, à 11 heures, le corps du soldat inconnu britannique est inhumé à Londres dans la nef de l’abbaye de Westminster.

MILITAIRE BEGRAAFPLAATSEN EN MONUMENTEN De begraafplaatsen, die beheerd worden door de Commonwealth War Graves Commission, zijn zowel architecturaal als landschappelijk steeds bijzonder verzorgd. De tommy’s die geen eigen grafzerk hebben, worden herdacht op gedenkstenen, volgens het principe dat elke gesneuvelde individueel geëerd moet worden.

MILITARY CEMETERIES AND MONUMENTS The military cemeteries are managed by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, and they are still characterized by very fine architecture and landscaping. Those Tommies who have no known monuments are recalled on memorial plaques, there by respecting the principle that each dead combatant should be honoured individually.

Le mémorial « Coming Home » (« Le retour à la maison ») du Cambridgeshire a été érigé à la fin de la rue de la gare pour marquer l’endroit devant lequel toutes les troupes du Cambridgeshire revenant du front passeraient lors de leur retour à la maison. Le monument représente un soldat regardant en arrière vers la gare de Cambridge alors qu’il rentre chez lui. Il a été conçu par l’architecte George Hubbard et le sculpteur Dr Robert Tait McKenzie. Son Altesse Sérénissime le duc d’York a inauguré le monument le 3 Juillet 1923.
