LETTER FROM THE INTERIM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA changed the lives of 8,425 animals in 2022, and it wouldn’t have been possible without your support. From tiny kittens who arrived at the shelter at just a few days old to terrified dogs that hadn’t received the treatment they deserved in the past, every pet was welcomed and lovingly cared for. Whether you adopted, fostered or donated, you impacted the lives of animals in need, and we can’t thank you enough for joining us on our mission of ending animal homelessness in our community and beyond. Last year was a year of many triumphs! We celebrated the 465 pets that were reunited with their families, the 1,213 dogs and cats who received lifesaving surgeries in our clinic, and the 3,806 homeless animals that became adored members of families through adoption. While we rejoice in our collective lifesaving, we also cheer for each individual animal who saw a life-changing transformation. You may not have seen the tears of joy from a staff member when you adopted their favorite long-stay dog or heard the shouts throughout the shelter when you took a senior cat to foster, but know the impact of your support touched us all. 44

As we continue to move through 2023, we have major goals in mind and we’re keeping our vision and mission at the forefront. We are completing a comprehensive review of shelter operations in order to determine the areas in which we’re excelling and the areas in which we can improve. We are also working diligently to revamp our volunteer program and invite our community to join us as we work to give homeless animals the second chance they deserve. We will continue to provide high-quality, low-cost veterinary care to the public through our Compassionate Care Clinics and spay/neuter initiatives, ensure lost pets are reunited with their families through our monthly microchip and rabies clinics, and place thousands of animals in loving homes — both temporarily through foster and long term through adoption. Released to Rescued: SAM’S STELLAR TRANSFORMATION

Sam, formerly known as Hambone, was one of 75 beagles we transported from Envigo, a mass-breeding facility in Virginia riddled with animal welfare concerns, last summer. On August 8, our team loaded up three transport vans and headed to Cumberland. We returned to the shelter that day with 50 beagles who had never known love or life outside of four metal walls. They were considered property, not family. Sam didn’t know it yet, but that was the day his life would be forever changed. He stepped off the van into a play park at the shelter where he got to run around with others just like him for the first time in his life. By the evening, Sam was sleeping in his first home with a foster family. A few weeks later, Sam met CJ, who would

become his dad, his favorite adventure partner and his protector. CJ says he and Sam have been inseparable ever since. “Within a week of his adoption, Sam joined me and six of my friends in his new home at James Madison University. There, he received more love and affection than a beagle could ever imagine. On the weekends I would take him throughout Shenandoah National Park and the National Forests that are around JMU, where we would hike and explore, and where Sam would exercise his nose. After I graduated from JMU, Sam and I moved back home with my parents, where my family dog, Norman, keeps him busy ALL day. In addition to hiking and playing with Norman, Sam loves the beach, getting zoomies when the sand touches his feet, swimming, lying outside, baying to songs that come on the truck radio and cuddling on the couch after a long day. From here, Sam and I will be moving to Alabama in early 2024, where he will accompany me as I will be in flight school for the US Army.”

About Us Founded in 1914, after unofficially operating out of the basements and garages of concerned citizens since the early 1900s, the CharlottesvilleAlbemarle SPCA has come a long way. In 1955, the SPCA acquired eight acres of land with a chicken coop, which, with some conversion and remodeling, became the first animal shelter in the region. Over the next 40 years, the shelter building was never remodeled and became a hazard. In the late 1990s, it no longer met state building code requirements and was on the verge of being shut down. Planning for a new facility began in 2000. In 2004, after a community-wide capital campaign, the SPCA moved into our current home: a 32,000-squarefoot building on a six-acre campus, which houses one-third more animals than the former facility and contains a veterinary surgical suite. The improvements to the facility and a commitment to saving lives allowed the SPCA to increase the number of animals treated and placed in foster care. The SPCA was better able to treat and find homes for many sick and injured dogs and cats as well as older, blind or deaf animals or those with unique needs. In 2016, the SPCA had been at the forefront of lifesaving efforts for over a decade. Looking into the future, we

knew it was time to expand our lifesaving efforts to pets living outside the shelter’s walls. Our vision for a mobile unit became a reality thanks to a $73,500 challenge grant from the Perry Foundation and our community of generous supporters. The Compassionate Care-A-Van has made it possible for the SPCA to rescue animals near and far, but our priority is to support our neighboring shelters. The SPCA made 131 rescue missions in 2022, transporting 1,635 animals from overcrowded shelters where they were at risk of being euthanized. The SPCA is fortunate to have the resources and ability to help animals in need in our region and nation. Without the Compassionate Care-A-Van, a dedicated foster family network, staff, volunteers and a very generous and supportive community, the rescue missions would not be possible!

With compassionate hearts, the staff at the SPCA will take your deceased companion and treat your pet with the utmost respect.

Clinics provide a wellness exam, pet care education, rabies vaccinations and routine wellness care at reduced fees. Clinics are held the second, third and fourth Sundays of every month.

Pet owners in need of help feeding their pets can pick up cat and dog food at the shelter or at one of the local off-site pet food pantries.

We offer free spay/neuter services for community cats living in Albemarle County and Charlottesville.

Seinfeld’s Send-Off We met Seinfeld in November of 2020. He was brought to the shelter after being found roaming the streets of Charlottesville. At that point, Seinfeld was already a senior cat at an estimated 11 years old. He was very thin, so our clinic ran additional tests after his initial exam. It was determined that Seinfeld had diabetes and needed insulin therapy. The shelter isn’t the place a senior cat with diabetes should have to spend his days, so we sent Seinfeld to a foster home. He was with an amazing foster, Jordan, who loved him dearly, for the majority of his time in our care. Jordan administered Seinfeld’s insulin twice a day every day for over a year, and while he had grown to love Seinfeld like his own, he knew he wasn’t able to take on Seinfeld’s care permanently, so we continued to search for Seinfeld’s perfect match. Seinfeld’s life changed in December when our veterinarian determined he was finally in remission and was no longer insulin dependent! We knew this would increase his chances of being adopted, but we couldn’t have dreamed that his perfect adopter would be right around the corner.

Just two weeks later, Grace submitted an application for Seinfeld after “cyberstalking” him for a while. She and her husband have a passion for adopting seniors and cats that have been at the shelter for a long time. In honor of their cat, Herbie, who had passed away a few months prior, they decided to give another shelter cat the golden years they deserved. They had experience with diabetic cats and thought they could offer Seinfeld a good home. A few days later, we were able to deliver the exciting news that Seinfeld was in remission, and they decided to make it official! Seinfeld now spends his days following his parents around their home and supervising diaper changes for their baby. Grace says, “He’s settled in very well! The little man just really wants to be near his people at all times.” He’s even become best friends with their other cats. We’re so grateful for the entire team of people who loved and cared for Seinfeld while on his journey to his forever home. We know his best years are still ahead of him!

Galaxy’s Journey Home Galaxy was brought to our shelter in June of 2022 after she was found running alone through downtown Charlottesville. Although she was young and sweet, Galaxy’s family never came to reclaim her. While examining her in our clinic, our team discovered she had an old injury to her right leg that was causing her to limp. Unfortunately, the bones in and around Galaxy’s knee had healed incorrectly, and her knee was unstable as a result. We knew that in order to give Galaxy a pain-free life, we needed to send her to a specialist for surgery. Our incredible community rallied and raised the money needed to repair her leg. Galaxy’s surgery was successful, and she landed herself an amazing foster family who helped her through the recovery process. For what may have been the first

time, Galaxy knew what life was like as a healthy and loved member of a family. After months of rehabilitation, Galaxy was finally ready to find a family of her own. It didn’t take long for Sarah and Jackson to spot Galaxy and fall in love. Now Galaxy spends her days running and playing with her fur sibling, and she’s finally able to keep up without feeling any pain. It takes a village to give animals in need a second chance, and we’re thankful for ours. Happy trails, Galaxy!

We knew that in order to give Galaxy a pain-free life, we needed to send her to a specialist for surgery.

Community Cat Program In 2011, the SPCA, in partnership with the city and county, launched the Community Cat Program, a program aimed at reducing the number of unwanted kittens being born in the area. In locations with community (free-roaming) cat populations, the staff works with caretakers to trap their outdoor cats and kittens. Through trap-neuter-return, we are able to provide these felines with necessary vaccinations and health checks before sterilizing them and returning them to their homes. The SPCA provides this resource at no cost and works diligently with members of the public to help manage the community cat population. The ultimate goal of the Community Cat Program is to reduce the population of uncared-for felines by ensuring all owned cats are spayed or neutered and that free-roaming cats are trapped, altered and returned to their habitats by their caretakers. The SPCA provided sterilization surgeries and veterinary care for 870 community cats and kittens in 2022. Since we started the Community Cat Program in 2011, the feline stray intake has dropped by 48%, allowing us to increase feline transport to save more lives!

SPCA Rummage Store In 2022, the SPCA Rummage Store generated 11% of the SPCA’s revenue! Rummage sales to benefit the homeless animals in the care of the SPCA have been around for a long time, starting with the first one in 1940, which raised $40. For 60 years, the rummage sale was a six-week-long annual event. As the sale grew in popularity, it raised more and more of the funds necessary for the care of the SPCA animals. In 2007, a coalition of board members and staff opened the first brick-andmortar SPCA Rummage Store on Preston Avenue. After nearly a decade, the store outgrew its original location. It moved to Seminole Square Shopping Center in 2016. The new location has a larger area for sorting and organizing donations and space for specialty sections, such as the popular Boutique. The Rummage Store continues to be a popular revenue-generating arm of the SPCA. By implementing creative ideas and through hard work, the Rummage Store’s staff and volunteers have made the store a shopping staple in Charlottesville.

Fourth Annual Critter Lift On October 15, 2022, the SPCA Rummage Store held its Fourth Annual Critter Lift and Rummage Store Extravaganza. Fresh merchandise was set out, there were door prizes donated by Animal Connection and adoptable dogs were onsite. You may have seen the scissor lift outside the store! It was a fantastic day for people to support the pets at the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA. Every purchase made at the SPCA Rummage Store adds resources to care for the homeless animals at the SPCA. And on that day, over $8,300 was generated through purchases at the store! Additionally, visitors filled our blue tubs with donations for the shelter, such as cat food and dog treats. It was wonderful to have such a show of community support!

Acorn Comes Out of Her Shell Acorn may seem like an unusual name for a cat, but in this case it seemed appropriate. Acorn arrived at the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA in September of 2022 with an acorn wedged in her mouth. The nut was lodged between her upper and lower canines and was preventing her from closing her mouth. Once our clinic team removed the acorn, it became apparent that she had a number of other medical concerns. Based on her initial exam and observations in her kennel, we discovered Acorn was suffering from neurological issues. She had minimal awareness of her surroundings — vocalizing for no clear reason, urinating and defecating in her food and water bowl, and sleeping in used litter. She would circle to the right side, often become unsteady, and use her left front leg oddly. Despite her neurological abnormalities, Acorn made substantial improvements through supportive care alone. After treating her for severe

dehydration and an upper respiratory infection, we placed Acorn in foster care. This was life-changing for her physical, mental and emotional health. Acorn’s mentation vastly improved, she stopped circling as often, and she started using her front leg more effectively. She also blossomed into a happy cat who enjoys pets and stimulation! Acorn’s foster mom, Francesca, said that after six months of nursing her back to health, she knew she wanted her to become a permanent part of her family. “After a few months of lots of delicious Meow Mix, several rounds of antibiotics, and half a dozen college students doting on her (and an eventful week of her being in heat before her spay), she sprang back to life. She came out of her shell entirely — she loves lying in the sun, cuddling in bed, and playing with her favorite toy rat. In April, when she was finally cleared for adoption, I knew I couldn’t part with her. I had a new furry best friend!”

Thank you, Fosters! “I first got into fostering through the suggestion of my girlfriend, Winnie. I hadn’t had a dog in years and had more availability to be at home during the pandemic. We first fostered one half of a bonded pair of hound girls who ended up being so depressed and scared until her sister was returned by another foster and we were able to reunite them. They both flourished immediately! They got adopted together soon after and it made such a positive impact on us both that we decided to keep fostering. I continue to foster because not only do I love providing a safe, comfortable alternative to a kennel for a dog in need, but I’m also so proud to help a dog overcome obstacles and get connected with their forever home. We love fostering hounds because they’re so sweet and are often overlooked.” — Richard Palumbo

“We have been fostering for about 20 years, starting in Houston at a point in our lives when we had no pets and knew we would be relocating to Virginia. We have mostly fostered cats for all kinds of reasons. Some may even just need a shelter break. Fostering kittens is a lot of work, but they bring so much joy; you can’t ever be in a bad mood when kittens are climbing all over you! I think we get as much out of caring for them as they do! We like that we can help get a cat/kittens out of the shelter for the busy staff at the CASPCA. Fostering was a great decision — knowing you are making a difference in an animal’s life and possibly giving it a better chance of being adopted!” — Anne and Tom Wild 29

Meet Our Staff We are grateful for a talented and diverse group of over 60 employees who all share the same passion, dedication and commitment to helping the thousands of animals who come through our doors each year. With over 40 different positions, the staff members work tirelessly as part of a team, all with the shared goal of improving the lives of animals. Jobs include caring for each animal’s needs and finding them a loving home, working at the SPCA Rummage Store, and organizing fundraisers that support the lifesaving programs at the SPCA. Each person plays an important role in serving our community’s pets and our organization’s mission. Working with animals is a dream job, but animal welfare

is also a very challenging and emotional industry. Staff work long days, the work is hard and dirty, and tears of joy and sadness are shed, but performing lifesaving work is just one of the many rewarding aspects. Healing animals’ wounds, both physically and emotionally, and seeing them run into the arms of their new adopters make us want to work that much harder.

Vet Save Stories In 2022, the SPCA performed 1,213 lifesaving surgeries — the highest on record!

Condition: Starla was brought to the shelter with a myriad of medical issues. She had masses in her ears that were causing chronic ear infections and inflammation. She also had two mammary masses and dental disease.

Treatment: Our veterinarian performed a specialized procedure to remove both ear canals, preventing Starla from further suffering from ear infections. A dental procedure to remove broken and diseased teeth was also performed in our clinic.

Starla Vet cost: $6,700

Today: Starla was adopted by her wonderful foster who cared for her for months while she underwent treatment, and she is now living a happy and healthy life!

Condition: Alka Seltzer has Manx syndrome which means he’s tailless, but when he arrived at the shelter with his brother he also had an issue with his anus that prevented him from being able to urinate and defecate on his own.

Treatment: Our veterinarian performed a lifesaving surgery on Alka Seltzer that allowed him to empty his bladder on his own.

Alka Seltzer Vet cost: $9,463

Today: Alka Seltzer was adopted with his brother, Nyquil, and now they have many siblings, including other cats, a dog and a pig!

Condition: Buzz arrived as a stray with a number of medical issues that required attention, including hernias where his pelvic and abdominal organs were displaced, disease in his teeth and gums, and heartworm disease.

Treatment: Buzz received hernia repair surgery, a dental extraction and a complete heartworm treatment in our clinic.

Today: Once Buzz fully recovered, he was adopted by an amazing family who is absolutely smitten with him!

Condition: Mickey arrived at our shelter with infections in his two front paws that resulted in complete destruction of the joint space. Mickey was in a great deal of pain and was struggling to walk.

Treatment: Our talented veterinary staff amputated multiple toes, which allowed Mickey to walk pain free!

Today: Mickey was adopted and is living his best life!

Events In 2022, the SPCA hosted two of its most successful signature events in the history of the organization! We are so grateful to everyone who gave through these events to support our animals in need.

BOW-WOW-WALK

We held our Ninth Annual bow-WOW-walk at the beautiful Boar’s Head Resort. Hundreds of walkers showed up with their furry friends to support the lifesaving work of the CharlottesvilleAlbemarle SPCA. The event featured a scenic walk alongside stunning ponds, canine competitions, and treats for our two-legged and four-legged companions. Wonderful animal-friendly sponsors made the event possible. The Ninth Annual bow-WOW-walk raised nearly $75,000 to benefit the animals at the SPCA! 36

CRITTER BALL

Our 2022 Critter Ball was planned for Montalto in September. When severe storms blew through the day of the event, the difficult decision was made to reschedule. Within weeks, our team had planned a wonderful new event at Keswick Hall! There was a live auction and a silent auction as well as dancing to support animals in need. Together we raised over $600,000 in proceeds! People were able to bid on incredible live auction packages and donate toward key initiatives, including our Compassionate Care Clinic Fund, Rescue Fund, and Spay/Neuter Fund. Then guests got to enjoy delicious food and dance the night away knowing they made a difference in the lives of homeless animals. 37

IS THE SPCA AFFILIATED WITH ANY NATIONAL ANIMAL WELFARE ORGANIZATIONS? Like most local animal shelters, the SPCA receives no ongoing funding from the ASPCA or the Humane Society of the United States. If you want to help the animals in your community, give to your local community shelter or animal welfare group. WHAT IS THE SPCA’S POLICY WHEN ACCEPTING PETS? Our doors are wide open to dogs and cats from Albemarle County and the City of Charlottesville, regardless of age or health.

THE SPCA IS A NO-KILL ORGANIZATION. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? We are committed to saving all healthy and treatable animals in our care, regardless of how long they’ve been with us. We are a progressive, solution-oriented animal welfare organization dedicated to saving lives.

WHAT IS THE SPCA’S ANNUAL LIVE RELEASE RATE? We collect and report our shelter statistics using a nationally recognized data matrix called the Asilomar Accords. We track and compare our progress through our annual live release rate, which is the data of live outcomes for all cats and dogs who leave our care. In 2022, we were proud to achieve a live release rate of 98%. IS THE SPCA A POUND? The SPCA is defined by the Code of Virginia as a “private animal shelter” whose purpose is finding permanent adoptive homes for animals. We also serve as the contracted public animal shelter for Albemarle County and the City of Charlottesville to impound or shelter seized, stray, abandoned, unwanted or surrendered animals. We are under contract and receive funding to serve as the city and county pound. 39

Philanthropy In 2022, 6,641 generous donors supported our animals. The SPCA relies on donations to purchase much-needed equipment, hire top-notch staff, and provide crucial programs and services to the community. None of the work we do would be possible without the various forms of giving from the community. Ways you can give include donating to our Rummage Store, making a monthly recurring gift, giving in memory/honor of a pet or person, and offering a general contribution. You can also sponsor a pet, adopt a kennel or purchase one of our memorial bricks. Whichever way you have offered support in the past or choose to contribute in the future, we thank you and value your gift, as do the many animals helped every day at the SPCA. LEGACY GIVING One of the most crucial gifts we receive is a legacy gift — a planned gift that costs donors nothing now but will provide essential support to the SPCA and our programs for years to come. In 2022, legacy gifts made up 5% of our total donations and were vital to our operations, enabling the highest standard of care for thousands of animals in need.
