2013 Annual Impact Report

AnnuAl RepoRt 2013

The Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA is a nonprofit animal welfare organization. Our mission is to provide a safe and nurturing environment for the lost, abandoned and homeless animals of the City of Charlottesville and the County of Albemarle by providing the pound services for the region, maintaining three bustling adoption locations and providing subsidized spay/neuter surgeries. Since embarking on a No Kill Mission in 2005, with community support our SPCA has achieved a better than 90% save rate, found homes for over 26,800 animals, spayed/neutered over 45,500 animals, provided life-saving medical care for more than 16,000 animals, and reunited more than 5,300 lost pets with their grateful guardians, all while providing the many wonderful programs and services you will read about in this report.

In 2013, building on the SPCA’s 2012 focus on Pet Retention, we began to look at new ways to keep pets out of the shelter and with their families by beginning our opeRAtion Ruby SlippeR pRogRAm, aimed to increase the number of lost pets reunited with their families, because we all know there’s no place like home! This new program was launched by committing to send every newly adopted pet home with a Save This Life Microchip that includes lifetime registration and a custom identification tag. This was followed up with improvements to the SPCA’s lost and found website and additional staff training on lost and found procedures.

The SPCA also helped the public protect their pets by holding two public low-coSt RAbieS And micRochip clinicS where more than 640 pets received a low-cost rabies vaccine and/or microchip. Free and low-cost spay/neuter appointments were also scheduled during these events.

2013

In an effort to further reduce the number of unwanted puppy and kitten births in our community, the SPCA also took to the streets. We went door-to-door in areas with high stray intake to reach under-served neighborhoods, providing education and access to free or AffoRdAble SpAy/neuteR for pets and free-roaming community cats. When needed, transportation for pets and trapping assistance for feral cats was provided. In 2013, the SPCA altered 5,762 pets in our community, preventing thousands of homeless animals.

incReASing the quAlity of cARe eAch AnimAl ReceiveS.

In 2013, our SPCA made improving the standard of care for all animals that passed through our doors a top priority. New medical protocols were put in place, we began to identify critical clinic needs, and started fundraising for and replacing or adding much-needed equipment to allow for improved diagnostics and care. At the end of 2013, a second full-time Veterinarian and Certified Technician were added to the SPCA’s medical team. Increased staff training was also made a top priority.

bRinging petS And people togetheR. 2,739 pets left our adoption centers for new homes in 2013. In an effort to ensure that our most vulnerable pets are given the best possible chance at a new home, the Angel Adoption pRogRAm was born. The Angel Program offers free/reduced cost medical care in the SPCA clinic for the life of the adopted Angel Pet, giving them a better chance at a loving home. Our main Berkmar Drive facility is open for adoptions seven days a week to ensure everyone has an opportunity to adopt a pet. Adoptable SPCA pets can also be found at the SPCA’s Rummage Store on Preston Avenue, at the PetSmart in the Hollymead Center, and on most weekends you can find our adoptable pets at off-site adoption outings anywhere from Fashion Square Mall to the local pet stores, or at a number of fairs or festivals. We go through great efforts to bring our pets to the people, increasing their chance of finding a home.

The SPCA publishes statistical information under nationally recognized guidelines known as the Asilomar Accords. The Asilomar Accords were developed in August 2004 by a group of animal welfare leaders for the purpose of building bridges across varying philosophies, developing relationships and creating goals focused on significantly reducing the euthanasia of healthy and treatable companion animals in the United States. The collection and publication of this data is sponsored by Maddie’s Fund®.

The terminology used contains definitions prescribed by the Accords. The statistics focus on “Live Release Rate,” the percentage of pets that leave a facility alive. Because the
contracts
the local animal control facility and
the only facility
the community, the SPCA Live Release Rate is the rate for the Charlottesville-
community. Our financial supporters, community partners, foster families and dedicAted volunteeRS continue to make our No Kill Community possible. In 2013 alone, more than 1,223 adult volunteers gave in excess of 29,000 hours of their time to save lives, not including the hundreds of foSteR fAmilieS that opened their homes to provide love and care for our most vulnerable animals. More than 20 community gRoupS including locAl buSineSSeS And SeRvice oRgAnizAtionS like Madison House, service fraternities and student life clubs at UVA brought hundreds of student volunteers, and more than 120 junioR volunteeRS from local schools earned their community service hours at the SPCA while gaining valuable work experience.

In addition to our Junior Volunteer program, the SPCA has engaged the next geneRAtion of AnimAl loveRS with our popular humane education programs, including SPCA Summer Camp, birthday parties, and educational tours, serving approximately 2,500 local children each year.

As part of our volunteer/humane education programs, the SPCA continued to provide valuable work experience for the young and developmentally challenged. In 2013, our SPCA began planning its new pet theRApy pRogRAm And expAnded itS educAtionAl offeRingS, allowing us to share our love of pets and the joy they bring with others in the community. Our Pet Therapy Program will send trained and certified pet therapy teams into elder care and rehab facilities for spirit-lifting visits.

As part of the Pet Therapy Program, we will partner with local libraries and schools, giving children who struggle with reading skills a chance to read to the animals, a program with proven success.

The SPCA also began planning for a pet theRApy clASS offering and dog life SkillS clASSeS to be offered weekly in the SPCA’s Education Center.

All of the SPCA’s educational offerings are designed to help foster love And ReSpect foR compAnion petS, improving their lives in our community.
