While 2021 brought its own set of challenges, I will remember it as a time when the community stepped up and showed stronger support than ever before.

From those who welcomed an animal in need into their home either short term through foster or long term through adoption to those who donated to make our lifesaving work possible, we could not have placed as many animals in caring homes without you. You can share in the celebration that 3,267 healthy pets are now living the lives they deserve with families that love them

One of our main goals for the year was to keep pets out of the shelter and with their owners. We worked toward this by increasing the number of Compassionate Care Clinics per year from seven to 24. These clinics can help reduce the sense of financial insecurity that causes loved pets to be surrendered to our shelter. During each Compassionate Care Clinic, we provide a wellness exam, pet care education, rabies and other vaccinations, and routine wellness care at a very reduced fee for clients showing proof of public assistance. We were able to provide services for 302 pets and 213 families last year In order to advance our mission of increasing pet retention, we will be offering 36 Compassionate Care Clinics this year. As a result of improving pet retention in our community, we have been able to increase the number of pets we rescue through transports from other communities. This is something I have been passionate about since stepping into the position of Executive Director five years ago. In 2021, we rescued 1,173 animals through 144 transport trips We strengthened our existing partnerships with neighboring shelters and shelters beyond our state lines in an effort to save even more animals at risk of euthanasia. Since the start of our transport program in July 2017, we have traveled over 71,154 miles and have saved 5,849 lives. This lifesaving work would not be possible without our Compassionate Care A Van, which was purchased thanks to our community’s support

“I could talk about these two all day. My husband and I love them so dearly and they have brought so much joy to our lives. They are both such joys to live with and we are so happy that we made the decision to adopt them together Watching their love for each other, they often groom each other, or help each other out of sticky situations like getting their head stuck in a box, has been so fun. They even did a cross-country road trip with us over Christmas!”

Apollo (previously known as Snow) was extremely ill with an upper respiratory infection when he arrived at our shelter. His eyes were almost completely closed and were barely functioning. He was immediately placed with a foster to help nurse him back to health Meanwhile, back at the shelter, a litter of kittens was brought in that also needed a foster home Apollo’s foster took them in as well After continued treatment, our veterinary staff saw no improvement in the function of Apollo’s eyes. In August, he was brought to our shelter to have a double enucleation, and both of his eyes were removed Apollo’s surgery was a success! He returned to his foster home with his other friends. While Apollo was recovering, his foster parents noticed he began depending on one of the other kittens, Ares (previously known as Land Ho), and Ares started supporting Apollo around the house

You’ve Got a Friend in Me

As time went on their bond grew stronger, and soon Ares was not only Apollo’s best friend but his support animal. Our team decided to make the two kittens a bonded pair They were adopted together by Andi and her husband, Andrew.

The improvements to the facility and a commitment to saving lives allowed the SPCA to increase the number of animals treated and placed in foster care The SPCA was better able to treat and find homes for many sick and injured dogs and cats as well as older, blind, or deaf animals, or those with unique needs. In 2016, the SPCA had been at the forefront of lifesaving efforts for over a decade Looking into the future, we knew it was time to expand our lifesaving efforts to pets living outside the shelter’s walls. Our vision for a mobile unit became a reality thanks to a $73,500 challenge grant from the Perry Foundation and our community of generous supporters

About Us

Founded in 1914, after unofficially operating out of the basements and garages of concerned citizens since the early 1900s, the Charlottesville Albemarle SPCA has come a long way In 1955, the SPCA acquired eight acres of land with a chicken coop, which, with some conversion and remodeling, became the first animal shelter in the region. Over the next 40 years, the shelter building was never remodeled and became a hazard. In the late 1990s, it no longer met state building code requirements and was on the verge of being shut down Planning for a new facility began in 2000. In 2004, after a community wide capital campaign, the SPCA moved into our current home: a 32,000 square foot building on a six acre campus, which houses one third more animals than the former facility and contains a veterinary surgical suite.

The Compassionate Care A Van has made it possible for the SPCA to rescue animals near and far. Our priority is to support our neighboring shelters Since 2020, the SPCA has rescued 3,389 pets We are proud to have created a transport relationship with Rescued Pets Movement, which allows us to save homeless pets from Houston, Texas, which has one of the worst animal overpopulation issues in the country. The SPCA made 144 rescue missions in 2021, transporting animals from overcrowded shelters where the animals were at risk of being euthanized

We met Gumbo on May 31, 2021 He was brought to the shelter after being abandoned and reportedly abused. Gumbo, a wiggly, wrinkly chunk, immediately stole our hearts. A staff member quickly stepped up to foster him. His personality was unique; he was happy to be alive and nothing could bring him down, not even his unfortunate past As our veterinary staff examined Gumbo, they noticed he was limping on his left hind leg. Radiographs showed an old fracture had not healed properly In order for Gumbo to live a pain free life, he needed to have surgery Fortunately, our clinic staff was able to perform a femoral head and neck ostectomy at the shelter in June. The successful surgery was the beginning of a pain free life for him and a second chance at finding a safe and loving home. Melanie, who fostered Gumbo while he underwent physical therapy after the procedure, ended up adopting him! She reports that Gumbo is thriving

“He is doing amazing!!! You would never know he had to have hip surgery. He loves to run and play but is just as content to lay upside down on the sofa. Such a silly boy full of craziness but we wouldn’t have him any other way ”

Dash had been through a lot, but his luck was about to change Samuel adopted Dash in September, and they’ve been together ever since!

Dash was given his name before he made it to our shelter For weeks, he had been spotted roaming around Barracks Road by several people. The woman who found him was able to catch Dash but had a tough time getting him into a carrier. When she finally got Dash in her car, he got loose and became stuck in her dashboard She had to take her car to a mechanic in order to get Dash out When Dash arrived at the SPCA in April 2021, he was about five years old. Our veterinary staff noticed he was drooling during his intake exam They soon realized he had an upper respiratory infection and a mass under his tongue

Once Dash was prescribed an antibiotic, his blood work improved and the mass went away! Dash was made available for adoption in September.

Thank you to the kind woman who caught Dash and brought him in to be treated, and to Samuel for welcoming Dash into his home!

The blood work results did not look good. They showed that Dash could have renal insufficiency, meaning his kidneys could be poorly functioning due to a reduction in blood flow

The ultimate goal of the Community Cat Program is to reduce the population of uncared for felines by ensuring all owned cats are spayed or neutered and that free roaming cats are trapped, altered and returned to their habitats by their caretakers

Community Cat Program

In 2011, the SPCA, in partnership with the city and county, launched the Community Cat Program, a program aimed at reducing the number of unwanted kittens being born in the area In locations with community (free-roaming) cat populations, the staff works with caretakers to trap their outdoor cats and kittens. Through Trap Neuter Return, we are able to provide these felines with necessary vaccinations and health checks before sterilizing them and returning them to their homes The SPCA provides this resource at no cost and works diligently with members of the public to help manage the community cat population.

The SPCA provided sterilization surgeries and veterinary care for 801 community cats and kittens in 2021. Since we started the Community Cat Program in 2011, the feline stray intake has dropped by 53%, allowing us to increase feline transport to save more lives!

Rummage

In 2021, the SPCA Rummage Store generated 9% of the SPCA’s revenue! By implementing creative ideas and through hard work, the Rummage Store’s staff and volunteers have made the store a staple for shopping in Charlottesville. New items are always arriving, and prices drop on older items, ensuring that there’s always a reason to stop by the SPCA Rummage Store and support the shelter! The SPCA Rummage Store is located at 364 Hillsdale Drive, Charlottesville, Virginia.

Rummage sales to benefit the homeless animals in the care of the SPCA have been around for a long time, starting with the first one in 1940, which raised $40 For 60 years, the rummage sale was a six week long annual event As the sale grew in popularity, it raised more and more funds necessary for the care of the SPCA animals. In 2007, a coalition of board members and staff opened the first brick and mortar SPCA Rummage Store on Preston Avenue After nearly a decade, the store outgrew its original location It moved to Seminole Square Shopping Center in 2016 The new location has a larger area for sorting and organizing donations and space for specialty sections, such as the popular Boutique The Rummage Store continues to be a popular revenue generating arm of the SPCA

Additionally, visitors filled our blue tubs with donations for the shelter, such as cat food, bleach and dog treats It was wonderful to have such a show of community support!

20 Third Annual Critter Lift

On October 30, 2021, the SPCA Rummage Store held its Third Annual Critter Lift & Rummage Store Extravaganza. Fresh merchandise was set out, Joe Thomas of WCHV AM was broadcasting live, there were door prizes donated by Animal Connection and adoptable dogs were on-site You may have seen the scissor lift outside the store! It was a fantastic day for people to support the pets at the Charlottesville Albemarle SPCA. Every purchase made at the SPCA Rummage Store adds resources to care for the homeless animals at the SPCA. And on that day, over $7,300 was generated through purchases at the store!

Bobby was so severely affected by the virus that he started to show neurological symptoms. It was difficult for him to open his mouth to eat. After two very emotional months, Bobby was approved to go into an experienced foster home to isolate and recover The next day, Bobby’s foster said he was navigating the stairs well and pulling Eleanor, his foster, around the yard. This may not seem like much, but it was a relief for our staff to hear that he was regaining his strength We started to have hope Finally, Bobby was cleared from the virus in October. By that time, Eleanor had developed such a bond with Bobby that she decided to adopt him. Eleanor said Bobby is enjoying himself despite his neurological quirks caused by the virus She said he has a puppy-like curiosity and enjoys the snow

When Bobby arrived, our staff noticed he had some discharge around his eyes, which is a sign of infection While awaiting lab results, our staff decided to isolate Bobby to prevent a possible virus from spreading to our shelter population. The results came back and showed that Bobby was positive for the canine distemper virus, also known as CDV. CDV is a highly contagious disease that is contracted primarily through respiratory inhalation

Beating the Odds

Bobby (previously known as Red) traveled quite the distance to get to our shelter He made the trip from Houston, Texas, in May 2021, but that was just the beginning of his journey.

She Just Knew

In February 2021, we rescued a sweet mama and both of her three week old, five pound puppies from Houston, Texas. Little did we know that Hera, the mama, would steal not only our hearts but her adopter’s as well Hera was the definition of a “ mama bear” when she came to our shelter with her itty bitty babies. She struggled being around so many other dogs at the shelter while she was raising them, so she was sent into a foster home until her babies, Vega and Ares, were weaned. When Hera returned to our shelter, she started to decline and had to be put on anti anxiety medication to help her feel more at ease Soon after, Hera was adopted, but she was brought back to our shelter a month later. Our staff continued to help her adjust to living in a shelter. They took her on outings to help with her anxiety and found out just how loving and silly she is once she feels safe.

In December, Tammy and Daniel came to the SPCA to meet Hera after seeing a video about her on our Facebook page. There was an instant connection!

“It’s like she’s lived here all of her life.” Tammy said she has made herself right at home since day one and has no flaws “She’s pure love!” In the mornings, she wakes up when Daniel makes the coffee and snuggles in bed until they both get up to start their day. Tammy said, “We cannot imagine life without her now; she rescued us. ” Tammy even said Hera and Daniel have grown so close that they facetime Daniel on his lunch break

Tammy said Hera just knew to be gentle with her from the second they met Now, Hera is settled in and loving life in a home!

Each person plays an important role in serving our community’s pets and our organization’s mission. Working with animals is a dream job, but animal welfare is also a very challenging and emotional industry Staff work long days, the work is hard and dirty, and tears of joy and sadness are shed, but performing lifesaving work is just one of the many rewarding aspects Healing animals’ wounds, both physically and emotionally, and seeing them run into the arms of their new adopters make us want to work that much harder.

What can we say other than the SPCA’s employees showed incredible resiliency over the past two years! This talented and diverse group of over 60 employees all share the same passion, dedication and commitment to helping the thousands of animals who come through our doors each year With over 30 different positions, the staff members work tirelessly as part of a team, all with the shared goal of improving the lives of animals Jobs include caring for each animal’s needs and finding them a loving home, working at the SPCA Rummage Store, and organizing fundraisers that support the lifesaving programs at the SPCA.

Meet Our Staff

Cost of Care COST OF CARE FOR SPAY/NEUTER SURGERY: CATS $65 / DOGS $100 30 It costs $22 a day to care for just one healthy animal at our shelter. COST OF EXAM AND TREATMENT: $60 PER ANIMAL

Treatment: Our veterinarian performed a specialized procedure to remove both ear canals, preventing Kaliki from further suffering from ear infections A dental procedure to remove broken and diseased teeth was also performed in our clinic.

Vet Cost: $4,047

Kaliki Condition: Kaliki arrived at our shelter in a great deal of pain due to recurrent ear infections and dental disease. She would excessively scratch and shake her head and had difficulty eating.

Vet Cost: $10,225 Condition: Lorelai came to our shelter ready to give birth to her 16 puppies, but labor wasn’t all she would have to survive. She also had lungworm, kennel cough and pneumothorax, which is an accumulation of air trapped around the lungs.

Vet Save Stories

Treatment: Lorelai was sent to Virginia Veterinary Specialists for CT imaging and then sent back again to have surgery to remove a portion of diseased lung. Today: Lorelai has been adopted and is living her best life! Lorelai

Today: Kaliki’s adopter met her while volunteering at the shelter and knew she had to add her to her family Kaliki now lives a comfortable life full of love!

Snow White

Vet Cost: $13,112 Vet Cost: $4,063

Condition: Lainey arrived at the shelter as a stray with a huge mass on her abdomen Our veterinary staff discovered she had a life-threatening inguinal hernia. In other words, her intestines were outside her abdomen, creating a large mass.

Condition: Snow White was brought to our shelter back in 2019 When she was dropped off, she was claimed to be feral, but that didn’t end up being the case. Unfortunately, she struggled with many urinary tract infections as well as hair loss around her ears, which was due to solar dermatitis.

Treatment: Lainey was immediately sent to Virginia Veterinary Specialists to have a lifesaving inguinal hernia repair surgery. Today: After recovering at VVS and in a foster home, Lainey was adopted by her foster, who loves her dearly Lainey

Treatment: Our talented veterinary staff performed a bilateral partial pinnectomy, which removed part of each ear, to prevent cancer. Today: After recovering from her surgery, Snow White finally found her forever home in May 2021! 32

In 2021, the SPCA performed 1,195 lifesaving surgeries!

Unfortunately, when kittens are outdoors and in an unhealthy environment before getting all of their vaccinations, they are susceptible to a number of infections and viruses

In May 2021, we welcomed Ghost (formerly known as Britt) to our shelter along with his two siblings The trio was incredibly cute but incredibly sick. The fluffy kittens were full of sneezes and ulcerations on their eyes. We were fortunate enough to have a staff member open their home to foster and care for the three kittens Since their eyes were ulcerated, they were on antibiotics and had to be given special eye drops to help them heal.

Ghost was scheduled for bilateral enucleations and recovered well! He was adopted shortly after by Sarah. “He likes to hide around corners and do sneak attacks on my feet, and his favorite toy is a wand that has three mice attached and a bell at the end He will carry it around the apartment, and when he wants me to play with him he brings it to me and waits for me to pick it up. Ghost also likes to play fetch, and we will usually play with one of the catnip mice I have or his favorite wand He also likes to be held where he can put his head either under my chin or on my shoulder when I walk around “

A Chance to Live

It’s unfortunate that we didn’t meet Ghost in time to save his eyes, but we sure did save his life. We are thankful that he was adopted by Sarah and is living such a happy life!

In Ghost’s case, all of the antibiotics and donor serum given wasn’t enough. He wasn’t brought to us in time for us to save his eyes, but that wouldn’t stop us from saving his life Although Ghost’s life may look a little different, he still has the chance to know what being in a loving home feels like.

2021 followed 2020 with obstacles created by the pandemic. It pushed us to think outside the box in order to continue holding our events. In 2020, we quickly moved to virtual events, but as circumstances began to shift, we had to continue to be swift and creative with what our events would look like. With the ever-changing environment that 202 presented for everyone, the SPCA wanted to provide the best experience while keeping everyone safe We reimagined our annual bow WOW walk and came up with the Pet Purrade!

CRITTER BALL

Participants were encouraged to decorate the and drive in our Purrade with their pets. Of cour there were competitions to raise funds for the shelter. Wonderful animal friendly sponsors m the event possible. The Ninth Annual (Pet Purrade) bow WOW walk generated nearly $60,000 to benefit the anima at the SPCA!

Our 2021 Critter Ball was held at the Clifton Inn. There was a live and a silent auction as well as dancing to support animals in need. Together we raised over $300,000 in net proceeds! People were able to bid on incredible live auction packages and donate toward key initiatives, including our Compassionate Care Clinic Fund, Rescue Fund and Spay/Neuter Appeals. To top off the night, guests grooved to Motown performers Kustom Made and enjoyed a gorgeous moon 3poolside!

We track and compare our progress through our annual live release rate, which is the data of live outcomes for all cats and dogs who leave our care In 2021, we were proud to achieve a live release rate of 97%. The SPCA is defined by the Code of Virginia as a “private animal shelter” whose purpose is finding permanent adoptive homes for animals. Legacy Giving

The SPCA relies on donations to purchase muchneeded equipment, hire top notch staff, and provide crucial programs and services to the community. None of the work we do would be possible without the various forms of giving we receive Ways you can give include donating to our Rummage Store, making a monthly recurring gift, giving in memory/honor of a pet or person, and offering a general contribution. You can also sponsor a pet, adopt a kennel or purchase one of our memorial bricks Whichever way you have offered support in the past or choose to contribute in the future, we thank you and value your gift, as do the many animals helped every day at the SPCA.

One of the most crucial gifts we receive is a legacy gift a planned gift that costs donors nothing now but will provide essential support to the SPCA and our programs for years to come In 2021, legacy gifts made up 6% of our total donations and were vital to our operations, enabling the highest standard of care for thousands of animals in need.
