From the Chief Executive Officer
I am proud of what the CharlottesvilleAlbemarle SPCA accomplished in 2019. And grateful to the staff, volunteers, fosters and donors who made everything possible. We found homes for 3,336 animals, the highest number of adoptions at the SPCA since we became No-Kill in 2006. Our live release rate in 2019 was 97%, the highest on record for the SPCA. I credit our successful year to committing to increasing adoptions, reducing pet intake through pet retention programs and saving lives through transport partnerships. As I am planning for 2020, those are still the goals the SPCA will work toward. This year, we will continue to provide a welcoming space for people to meet and adopt a new family member. It is something I experienced myself last year. There are many reasons why 2019 was a great year for the shelter, but for me it will always be the year that I adopted a puppy named Harrison with a genetic disease. I initially was just going to foster him because he had specific care needs, but it didn’t take long for his personality to shine through his disability, and he stole my heart. He may have had crooked legs and an awkward body but he loved more strongly than any creature I’ve ever met. Unfortunately, his health went downhill quickly, and he’s no longer with us. His fighting spirit will stay with me as a reminder to not give up just because something seems difficult. Regardless of age, breed, size or special needs, pets can bring us
so much joy. Harrison has rekindled my passion for pets who can be overlooked. Senior pets are also near and dear to my heart. We often have many senior pets available for adoption at the SPCA, and they have so much to offer. When I heard Ernie, an older, long-stay lobby cat had finally been adopted, I was so thankful that someone saw past his age to the amazing cat who was waiting for a home. Sharing stories like Ernie’s, and helping people understand how much value all pets have, is so important to increasing adoptions. As we work to find loving homes for pets, we also work to keep pets in their homes through pet retention programs. Pet retention is all about keeping animals in their homes, instead of loved pets coming to the shelter. We expanded our Compassionate Care Clinics to provide low-cost veterinary care for pets owned by low-income individuals by not only adding an extra clinic but also having our first off-site clinic, and we will continue expanding our reach in 2020. We will also find avenues to increase the number of pets in our community that we are able to provide spay/neuter surgery for. Our impact in our community will be increasing, as well as our impact beyond. Not only do we love transport at the SPCA (my sweet Harrison was a transfer) but we also work with shelters that are trying to move forward with their own lifesaving goals. We benefit from transports by getting amazing animals to adopt out. Other shelters benefit by having more space and less risk of having to euthanize for space. We all benefit from living in a world where more pets have a chance to find homes. By expanding our pet retention programs, continuing to promote the adoption of unique animals and transporting from our partner shelters, I am confident that 2020 will be another incredible year. On behalf of every animal who entered our care this year, I say, “Thank you” 4,126 times. You have been a vital part of creating a community committed to lifesaving. And you are a vital part of the SPCA’s future as we find innovative ways to save as many homeless pets as possible. I am so thankful that you are standing next to us as we look into a bright and exciting 2020. With sincere gratitude,

Arnie
After opening up her home to Arnie, Candy has one bit of advice to share with animal lovers: “I tell everyone to adopt grown up dogs.” We all know that puppies are adorable, but Candy knows that adult dogs need just as much love, especially the ones who take a bit of time to find their ideal homes. It took Arnie more than a year to find his forever family, but now Candy tells us, “He’s perfect.” He’s the loveable goofball who greets the customers at her in-home nail salon. He’s a great playmate for his Rottweiler sister named Brenda and his new puppy brother named Walter. He’s the couch potato who loves gnawing on some sweet potato jerky or a giant Nylabone.
Still, Arnie was having a hard time finding a place to call home, and after On Independence Day 2018, Arnie came more than a year in our shelter, we sent him to live at Muddy and Company, a into the SPCA as a stray. He quickly train-and-board facility in Northern became a staff and volunteer favorite. No one could resist his adorable smile or Virginia. There Arnie learned to live his wiggly cuddle sessions. And he was a happily alongside other dogs. He practiced cuddling, playing and even rock star during nose work sessions! eating alongside other pups. Arnie also Volunteers could hide smelly treats in enjoyed some fun adventures while the sneakiest of spots — under flower pots, on the tires of parked vans, inside living at Muddy and Company. He of shoes — but these silly humans could dressed up as Superman for Halloween, went for a dip in a pool and visited some not outsmart Arnie. His nose led him straight to the tasty snacks every time. ferrets at Petco.
Thanks to these great experiences, Arnie became a more confident and relaxed dog. In November 2019, the new and improved Arnie met his mom, Candy, for the first time. They’ve been enjoying each other’s company ever since. He perches on a very formal sitting chair where he gets to feel nice and important, he makes new human friends every day and he naps alongside his doggie siblings. Most importantly, Arnie now knows the comfort of a home of his own. 4
Compassionate Care-A-Van The Compassionate Care-A-Van is a state-of-the-art mobile unit that allows the SPCA to expand our lifesaving work beyond our physical shelter. The Compassionate Care-A-Van is made possible by community support and a matching grant from the Perry Foundation. You’ll see the Compassionate Care-A-Van on the road heading to another shelter to pick up animals, parked outside of a business for an adoption event, or set up for an event in communities in need of support.

Compassionate Care Clinics In 2019, the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA held six Compassionate Care Clinics. These clinics provide a wellness exam, pet-care education, rabies vaccines, other vaccines and
7
routine wellness care at a very reduced fee for clients showing proof of public assistance to qualify for care. We were able to provide services for 264 pets through Compassionate Care Clinics in 2019. By providing this service to our community, our hope is that all owners are able to have access to veterinary care for their beloved pets. “Unable to afford pet is one of the common reasons an animal is surrendered to our shelter, with medical issues being the main expense. Compassionate Care Clinics can help reduce the sense of financial insecurity that results in loved pets being surrendered to our shelter.
Pet Food Pantries
Over 1,250 dogs & 750 cats from over 700 families served in 2019
Early in 2019, we decided that revamping our Pet Food Pantry would be an important part of increasing pet retention in our community. The pantry serves as a resource to pet owners in need, providing a stable supply of both cat and dog food year-round. Prior to March 2019, the pantry was accessible only at our shelter location, putting those with limited transportation at a disadvantage. It became clear that increasing access points throughout Charlottesville and Albemarle County would be a key part of broadening our impact. Thanks to the hard work of several passionate volunteers, we were able to do just that. Longtime volunteer Karla McCollough spearheaded the effort, setting up partnerships with various food pantries throughout the community. Volunteers began attending pantries held at Buck Mountain Episcopal Church in Earlysville and St. Paul’s Church in Ivy on a monthly basis to pass out dog and cat food to anyone who might need it. The popularity of these two pantries then helped cultivate relationships with Loaves
and Fishes of Charlottesville, as well as Meals on Wheels. After offering several popular Pet Food Pantries, it was obvious how important and necessary this resource was to our community. One woman was visibly moved after realizing that cat food was now available at her regular food pantry. She expressed gratitude that she would not have to use the cans of tuna she had just received to feed her cats. She was not the only one who often felt the need to sacrifice her own dinner so that her pets would not go hungry; one gentleman had just opened his last can of beans to feed his dog when he was pleasantly surprised with a bag of dog food from the SPCA. We realized that by working to put food in pets’ bowls, we were inadvertently helping keep food on people’s plates. By the end of the year, we had served over 700 families in the community. The hard work of our amazing volunteers and staff members helped ensure that over 1,250 dogs and over 750 cats would have access to nutritious food, relieving owners of a potential financial
burden. Additionally, thanks to local businesses, we can now count on a stable supply of donated pet food. Costco, Kroger, Natural Pet Essentials, Petco, Pet Food Discounters, PetSmart, Pet Supplies Plus and Target give regularly, and we appreciate it so much. In the new year, we will continue to improve the lives of community members and pets by further expanding our pet pantry outreach. We will continue to strive to improve the lives of both pets and owners and work to create a more compassionate community, one bag at a time.

Foster Feature What is the best part of fostering? The best part??? The return! I just love giving the babies and moms a positive start... for the moms who have been mistreated, their newfound trust is so gratifying. Anything else you’d like to add? Fostering is FUN. I’ve met and become friends with so many wonderful people and families!!
Fostering is a vital part of our lifesaving work. Our incredible network of foster families give our animals a chance to relax or recover away from the stress of the shelter. One of our amazing fosters is Beth Marcus. Beth started volunteering at the SPCA in 2006, and soon after that, she learned that fostering was necessary to reduce euthanasia. She started fostering with a puppy named Chandler — and never stopped! At the time of publishing, Beth has fostered 274 animals from the SPCA. She still has her first foster. Chandler, whose name has been changed to Zak, has been with her since October 2007. Beth took the time to answer a few questions for us about fostering.
9
We are always in need of fosters for kittens and puppies who are too young to be spayed or neutered, nursing mothers, animals recovering from surgery or illness and animals that need a break from the shelter.
Why do you think that fostering is important?
One reason people say that they could never foster is that it would be too hard to let the animal go. What would you say to someone who was worried about that?
The simple answer is it saves lives, for several reasons. It makes room for other animals in the shelter and it’s a better and safer environment for newborns and young puppies. For older dogs, it gives them a chance to be evaluated in a home environment versus the noisy and stressful shelter.
Well, sometimes you can’t give one up... that’s OK! I’ve got six but only four were former fosters. Knowing you’re just there as a temporary “parent” becomes a part of fostering, especially with the babies. You know their new family can give them more attention and a better life.

Ernie
It was just a day shy of his one-year anniversary at the SPCA. Ernie had done everything right: charmed the adoption counselors, claimed some prime real estate in the lobby, checked out a few foster homes, and posed for tons of photo shoots. Okay, so maybe he stole a few breakfast sandwiches and maybe he lay across the keyboards while our staff were trying to work. But Ernie more than made up for this mischievousness with snuggles and winning good looks. But as much as he enjoyed his time in the lobby, 364 days in, Ernie was ready to leave shelter life behind. Then Brittany and Ayush walked into the SPCA looking for their first pet. They knew from their time volunteering at an animal shelter that they wanted to bring home an older, long-stay cat who needed a cozy place to snuggle up. When an adoption counselor recommended Ernie, a gray tiger charmer who lived in the lobby, Brittany and Ayush could not resist his charisma. 11
They knew immediately Ernie was the cat for them. Ernie settled into his new home quickly. That chair Brittany and Ayush bought for themselves? Yup, that’s Ernie’s now. The two steaks they left out to thaw? Also Ernie’s. And those blinds blocking his view of the birds outside? Totally unnecessary — don’t worry, Ernie got rid of them. But Brittany and Ayush are thrilled that their new cat made himself comfortable so quickly. They tell us that this relaxed and communicative lovebug
makes first-time cat ownership a breeze. The only hiccup? The name. “Ernie” no longer seemed to fit the captivating furball who ruled their space, so Brittany and Ayush set out to find him a new name. They settled on Jojo, a cool and suave TV character whose bravado reflected their new cat’s personality. After nearly a year at the shelter, Jojo now spends his days bird watching, scoping out snacks, and cuddling with his parents.
Volunteer Spotlight
Evan started volunteering last March and has since spent more than 120 hours showering the SPCA cats with lots of love and helping potential adopters find the right furballs for their families. A theater student at Piedmont Virginia Community College, Evan has loved animals his whole life and he is the proud owner of two cats, Ravi and Zuko. Evan calls time at the SPCA a pleasure and he recommends that everyone give volunteering a try. “You’ll get hooked pretty quickly,” he explains.

Bridget Rizzo started walking dogs at the shelter two years ago, but she quickly realized that volunteering once a week wasn’t enough dog time for her. She soon decided to become a foster mom and open up her home to SPCA animals, first to a few puppies and then to a series of adult dogs. In addition to fostering, Bridget still walks dogs at the shelter, and not only because she loves the pups. When asked what has most surprised her about volunteering at the SPCA, Bridget lauded her fellow volunteers. She appreciates being part of a supportive team that works together to care for animals in need.
In her more than 20 years as a volunteer with the SPCA, Jan Cubbage has done everything: walked dogs, socialized cats, fostered animals, and planned fundraising events. She was even a member of the board of directors for nine years. These days you can find Jan at the SPCA Rummage Store. She spends four days a week organizing the boutique section, sorting through donations, and helping customers however she can. She also plans our annual Critter Lift, which this year brought in more than $15,000 for the animals! Jan advises all animal lovers to “follow their hearts” and adopt, foster, or volunteer however they can. She describes the Rummage Store as her passion because she enjoys bringing in the funds that allow us to take care of all the cats and dogs at the SPCA.

Employee Spotlight! Sharon Johnson has been involved with the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA for years. After 25 years as a banker, she started volunteering for SPCA Rummage Sales, and eventually working for the SPCA. In 2007, when a brickand-mortar location opened, Sharon was there. She started out hanging clothes, then moved up to managing the Rummage Boutique Store. In April 2018, she returned to her position as SPCA Rummage Store Manager, and has overseen the store during its most successful years. While “managing” a feisty kitten named Cara, Sharon spoke about working for the SPCA. What do you wish more people knew about the Rummage Store? That we’re here to support the animals. The whole reason for the store is to fundraise for the homeless animals at the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA What are your biggest successes? I set goals for myself and the store. I’m very proud of setting ambitious goals and meeting them. Each goal is a success.
What do you like the most about managing the SPCA Rummage Store? I love meeting and greeting people every day. Each day brings new people and challenges. Managing the store and its ever-changing inventory is like working a puzzle. I enjoy doing so from start to finish, and especially love to see the end result.
What is something about you that other people might find surprising? Something that not a lot of people know about me is that I’m very creative. In my free time, I design and create art. I enjoy using unusual objects, and I make custom artwork for people I know. I also enjoy photography! I’m a bit of a jack-ofall-trades. I’m active in my church, and am the head of hospitality there.

Free Adoptions for Veterans and post-adoption support. The program launched in August 2019 and resulted in close to 20 adoptions by the end of the year. Adopters ranged in age, branch of military and gender, resulting in a diverse pool of participants. Dogs were the most popular companion animal chosen by veterans, but a total of four adult cats were also adopted through the program. Veterans who adopted dogs received a free six-month supply of Tri-Heart Plus and one Bravecto Chew good for 12 weeks of flea/tick protection as a form of post-adoption support. Supplies were generously donated by Merck Animal Health. Adopters were also given a list of local trainers and had access to our on-staff Dog Behavior and Placement Specialist. After starting the program, we were pleased to see some of our long-stay dogs benefit from the resulting
Aaron with Junior The Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA is proud to serve the veteran community through our Free Adoptions for Veterans program. Albemarle County is home to around 6,500 veterans, making up about 5% of the county’s total population (U.S. Census). Data suggests that 20% of the vets who served in either Iraq or Afghanistan suffer from either major depression or posttraumatic stress disorder (Invisible Wounds). The secluding nature of posttraumatic stress disorder prevents many veterans from seeking mainstream treatment, but research suggests that companion animals can help provide a non-stigmatizing alternative therapy. adoptions. Junior, an incredibly sweet lap dog, was adopted through the program after a four-month stay at the shelter. Junior had experienced a rough life by the time he entered our care but was quick to steal the hearts of staff members. After being overlooked for several months, he finally found his forever home with a caring veteran. Solo also came to us under similarly unfortunate circumstances, but no one would know from his playful, loving personality. As an energetic young dog, Solo had a difficult time finding a home that would meet all of his needs. After five months in our care, Solo finally found his perfect fit with a veteran. We are excited by the number of veterans and animals that were positively affected by this program. As we look ahead into 2020, we will continue to grow and improve upon our Free Adoptions for Veterans program in order to help improve the lives of veterans and companion animals alike.
