Jenn Corbey is passionate about animal welfare, having most recently adopted from our shelter a Chihuahua-terrier mix named Spencer that she lovingly calls a “CASPCA Special.” Her soft spot for animals has made her a terrific supporter in the past—most recently, she served as Co-Chair of our 2015 Critter Ball. “My love for animals drives me to work hard to make their lives better,” Jenn says. She also owns a Boston Terrier, Patten, and she’s lived with her family in Charlottesville for 17 years. When she’s not volunteering at Charlottesville Catholic School, she works as a fitness instructor at acac Fitness & Wellness Centers and EDGE studio. She enjoys watching the Pittsburgh Steelers, cooking, traveling and spending time with her family. “I’m excited to join the board. It’s good to be a part of all the new and exciting changes taking place at the shelter.” Tom Fitch grew up in the Charlottesville area and attended the University of Virginia for his undergraduate and graduate degrees. He currently is the Associate Dean for Career Services and Employer Relations at the McIntire School of Commerce at UVA. After college, Tom served as the Executive Director of Downtown Charlottesville, Inc., where he helped create Fridays after Five and many other community events. He has been on a variety of local non-profit boards and committees. In his free time, Tom enjoys gardening and spending time at the beach. His family includes Kenny, Sweet Pea and Gerty. He has always had dogs in his life, and he’s looking forward to assisting the CASPCA as a new board member. Mark Sackson, his wife and children live on a farm in Keswick and have a variety of animals, including 11 CASPCA-adopted cats and five dogs. One of those dogs, Marty, is a CASPCA adoptee and the 2015 Critter Ball Best in Show winner (see more about Marty on Page 8). The family also has four guinea pigs, also shelter adoptees. They have a pony, a miniature horse and are in the process of adopting a rescue horse. For many years, the Sackson family was involved with the SPCA in New York City and have adopted several cats from that organization. When they moved to Charlottesville about 11 years ago, they immediately became involved with the CASPCA—whether adopting animals, going to benefits or directly giving. “We are firm believers in the No Kill philosophy, which is a strong part of the CASPCA’s attraction,” Mark says.

WHAT IS THE LIVE RELEASE RATE? We collect and report our shelter statistics using a nationally recognized data matrix called the Asilomar Accords. We track and compare our progress through our Annual Live Release Rate, which is the rate of live outcomes for all cats and dogs that enter our care. We have had a Live Release Rate of 95 percent for the past three years.
IS THE CASPCA AFFILIATED WITH ANY NATIONAL ANIMAL-WELFARE ORGANIZATIONS? No. Like most local animal shelters, the CASPCA receives no ongoing funding from the ASPCA or the Humane Society of the United States.
Celebrating 10 years as a No Kill organization
The CASPCA is proud to be among the first No Kill organizations in the country. Our shelter has paved the way for a brighter future for our canine and feline friends, striving to eliminate animal suffering while ensuring pets get out of the shelter and into loving homes. An organization can’t just call itself “No Kill.” It has to meet certain criteria— according to esteemed animal-welfare organization Maddie’s Fund, “No Kill” means a “shelter saving both healthy and treatable dogs and cats.” The No Kill movement originated from San Francisco in the ’90s and has become a gold standard among shelters nationwide. Our shelter has exceeded this standard for 10 years, and in so doing, has found homes for more than 30,000 animals, reunited over 6,500 lost pets with their guardians, and spayed/neutered more than 50,000 animals to reduce
overpopulation. This is all the more impressive considering the CASPCA serves as the pound for the City of Charlottesville and the County of Albemarle, welcoming animals other shelters might turn away. Our commitment to spaying/neutering every animal we see prior to adoption has been essential to achieving our No Kill mission. Additional initiatives, such as our Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program, also have been helpful. The TNR program empowers animal lovers to use cages provided by the shelter to capture and bring community cats to our clinic for basic care, minimizing uncontrolled breeding while preventing life-threatening diseases and infections. One of the most important moves the CASPCA made to become a No Kill organization is the expansion of its foster program. When the CASPCA became a No Kill shelter in 2006,
more than 1,500 animals were placed in foster care, almost three times as many as in 2005. A strong network of fosters allows the shelter to avoid overcrowding, giving animals a loving place to live while on the way to their forever home. Getting healthy animals in need of extra attention into foster homes also helps free up space in our facility, so we can continue to keep our doors open to as many dogs and cats in our region as possible. “The foster care program has enabled us to treat more complex medical conditions that we may not have been able to do in-house,” says Director of Operations Heather Sullivan, who has been with the shelter for more than 10 years. Sullivan says the foster program’s growth has been essential to the shelter’s continued success. “The program has evolved from just addressing medical issues to now providing alternative housing for animals stressed in the shelter environment.”
The CASPCA has been caring for animals for more than 100 years and has operated as the pound for the City of Charlottesville and the County of Albemarle since 1956. It is not affiliated with any national organization, such as the ASPCA, and relies on donors to fund its many programs and services. In recent decades, it has become a nationally recognized animal-welfare organization, receiving awards for its achievements from well-respected activist groups, including Maddie’s Fund. Additionally leading the way toward our No Kill achievement, the shelter made a big move in 2004 from a building that had once been a chicken coop to a facility on Berkmar Drive that includes a six-acre campus with dog-walking paths and increased space for its animals and staff. In 2006, under the leadership of then-Executive Director Susanne Kogut, the CASPCA became a No Kill organization, securing its status

as a trailblazer in the animal-welfare community. “We can’t emphasize enough how much our passionate community of supporters have helped us achieve and maintain our No Kill status for 10 years. Without the dedication of so many who care deeply about the animals we help, we never would have been able to reach this tremendous milestone,” says CASPCA Board Chair Glenn Rust. But there is more work to be done. How can you help? Tell your friends, family, co-workers and neighbors about how important it is for them to spay and neuter their pets to discourage uncontrolled breeding and combat animal homelessness. Adopt one of our animals, volunteer at our shelter, support us with a generous donation or give your time as a foster. Together, we can continue to make a difference for the dogs and cats in our community.
SPCA RUMMAGE makes a jump to an exciting new location
The line of shoppers waiting to get into a SPCA Rummage sale!
BEFORE
AFTER
SPCA Rummage sales often would fill empty grocery stores and warehouses.
Imagine winding lines of families, eagerly awaiting an opening. This isn’t the opening of the latest cinematic blockbuster they’re anticipating—it’s actually the opening of one of the CASPCA’s famous Rummage sales, which for decades attracted crowds of animal supporters looking for great deals and a way to show their love for our cause. The first Rummage sale to benefit CASPCA animals took place in 1940 and raised $40. In the decades that followed, the six-week-long annual sales event raised more and more needed funding for the CASPCA— so much so that after the 2005 sale brought in more than $200,000, a coalition of board members and staff opened SPCA Rummage on Preston Avenue in 2007.
Our new location at 199 Zan Road
The SPCA Rummage store has continued to grow since, with its newest move from Preston Avenue to a larger location in the Seminole Square Shopping Center representing another bold step to maximize the love our supporters share for the store and for our animals. The Rummage sales and store have long been examples of community pride producing real results for the CASPCA. For more than six decades, the sales were hosted in vacant buildings, such as closed grocery stores, in and around the city. Not only did these sales mobilize a hundred volunteers to assist with each event, but they also struck a chord with a community wanting their donations and purchases specifically to help the animals at the CASPCA. Volunteers returned year after year as well— bringing to the table their own special expertise on different goods offered, such as books, electronics and clothing.
NOW OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK! 199 Zan Road Charlottesville, Virginia Seminole Square Shopping Center
Store Hours: 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. daily
Donation Drop-off Hours: 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily This latest expansion to 199 Zan Road in Charlottesville has allowed Rummage Store staff to accept even more items with a more expansive space to sort and organize donations. An entire room is devoted to testing electrical equipment; there is ample space for comfy reading chairs in the book section; and an additional dressing room makes shopping faster for those on the hunt for clothes. There is a boutique book section, and increased space for shoes that will allow staff to organize them by size. Also in the works is a new sales system in which items will be reduced on a monthly basis to ensure old items are off the sales floor, making room for new merchandise.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT
SAM STOVER Since she was a kid, Sam Stover knew she wanted to work with animals. Cats, dogs, cows, chickens and pigs—she grew up surrounded by creatures big and small on a farm in White Hall, Virginia. That’s why it was no surprise she began her time at the shelter as many other animal lovers do: as a passionate volunteer. A year later, in 2005, she was offered a position as an Animal Care Senior Assistant. Since then, Sam has seen tremendous change at the shelter. She is particularly proud of when the shelter acquired its No Kill designation in 2006, having witnessed the impact such an achievement has had on the animals in our community. What’s a common misconception about the CASPCA? Sam says many assume the animals at the shelter are cooped up all day. The truth is while the goal is for all of them to leave the shelter for loving homes, the animals do enjoy play groups, walks and socialization during their time at the

CASPCA. “They do have fun here,” Sam says. An issue dear to her heart is spreading awareness about animal neglect, specifically urging owners to bring outdoor pets inside responsibly and discouraging chaining. Today, Sam lives in Earlysville, and she says her daughter, Katy Louise Stover, at 4 years old, already is following in Mom’s footsteps as an animal lover. Thanks, Sam, for your decade of dedication to the CASPCA mission and for all you do for the animals!

CRITTER BALL Our supporters came together Saturday, Oct. 10 at the Omni Hotel in Downtown Charlottesville for our biggest annual fundraiser. The 2015 Critter Ball was a stellar event for all the animals we help, with more than $200,000 of net proceeds raised to help the animals. Guests gave for specific causes, such as our art camp for at-risk youth and our spay/neuter initiative. They also enjoyed fantastic food, bid on auction items and danced the night away in high style. The Olate Dogs, winners of 2012's America's Got Talent, delighted the crowd with a high-energy, acrobatic performance. “We’re thrilled by the outpouring of support from our community to make our Critter Ball event such a success,” said Angie Gunter, director of development at the CASPCA. “None of our shelter’s work for homeless animals would be possible without successful events like these.” But the night wouldn't have been complete without the announcement of our Best in Show winner. Emcee Sharon Gregory (NBC29 WVIR anchor) presented Liza and Mark Sackson with the big prize on behalf of their beloved CASPCA adoptee, Martin. Look for Martin, our reigning 2015 Critter Ball Best in Show champion, in the months to come as he helps us in our mission to spread awareness about animal-welfare issues, making appearances at events and in the media.
MEET MARTIN SACKSON
THE 2015 BEST IN SHOW CRITTER BALL CHAMPION I’m Martin Sackson, the most lovable senior rescue from CASPCA. What won me the trophy at 2015’s Critter Ball? Maybe my skills as a rabbit chaser got me first place. Or perhaps my porch-patrol prowess was what won over the crowds. Regardless, I’m proud that I took the gold, and I’m proud to be a CASPCA dog, too.
HEALING WISHBONE
When Wishbone was brought to us as a stray this past February, the severely malnourished Jack Russell Terrier weighed just 10 pounds. With skin infections, hair loss and toenails so long they had grown into each other, his condition was deplorable – and yet this sweet terrier never failed to greet everyone he met with a kiss and a tail wag. But Wishbone’s health troubled our staff even more when they observed the little dog limping. Director of Veterinary Services Dr. Kristen Scheller ordered radiographs, but when the results came in, she ruled out any injuries or fractures as the cause. Still, little Wishbone’s condition seemed to worsen — his limp would switch from one leg to another every couple of days, and he was clearly in a great deal of pain. Dr. Scheller determined his pain must be the result of polyarthritis, and prescribed multiple medications. To our clinic’s relief, the medications, combined with close observation and care, helped Wishbone bounce back, slowly strengthening and regaining the ability to move normally. This happy-go-lucky man then caught the eye of a dedicated volunteer, who offered to take him home as a foster animal. Wishbone did so well in her home that when this little guy had fully recovered, her son, who had fallen in love with the terrier, adopted him.
Wishbone when he was brought to the shelter
Wishbone today
A happy tail testimonial From Wishbone’s owner, J.J. Williams: Wishbone isn't the kind of dog most people picture in their heads when you say, "Jack Russell Terrier." You can see the terrier come out in him whenever his eye catches a squirrel, or when he decides a particular truck is too large, or a motorcycle too loud. Believe me, in those moments, you'd never want to let him off of the leash. But when we first brought Wishbone home, he was actually somewhat timid. We had been advised that he wasn't a cuddler; he loved people and was most happy being around them, but was most content to spend his time at your feet. In fact, it was difficult to keep him on the couch, or on the bed, for more than a few minutes without the poor guy stressing out and insisting on being let down. You'd never know that now. Wishbone's favorite thing – well, second favorite thing – is cuddling. He sleeps in the bed with us every night of the week and loves nothing more than a lazy Sunday. His absolute favorite thing? Bacon, of course.
THE CASPCA PARTNERS WITH
Meet our new behavior coordinator Our new behavior coordinator, Kelsey Cowger, is an exciting addition to our shelter staff, having worked at Best Friends Animal Society in Utah and attained special certification for dog training. But Kelsey also has a less traditional background that might come in handy as she works with our dogs and cats—she once was a music history professor. “Working with animals is not as different as you’d think!” Kelsey says. Kelsey strongly believes in making animals, like her former music students, participants in their own learning. She’s an adopter of the “clicker method,” whereby a clicker is used to mark the second an animal performs a desired behavior. “It’s super rewarding for the animal and respects the animal,” she says. It also relies on positive reinforcement and has a proven record of improving animal behavior. Kelsey has four dogs – Lucy, Nellie, Widget and Nimbus – and two cats – Emmett and Finnigan. She’s thrilled to be in Charlottesville and to join the CASPCA team. “A big attraction was the organization’s No Kill status, combined with its open-admission policy,” Kelsey says. “The amount of community support is really heartening. It’s awesome that we have this incredible, giant volunteer base. It gives us a really good position to do innovative, progressive work.”
THE CASPCA PARTNERS WITH
FOSTER GROUP TO BOND TEENS, SHELTER PETS
A recent study at Harvard University found that spending 10-15 minutes with an animal increases endorphins, brain chemicals associated with positivity, and decreases the levels of a chemical called cortisol, which contributes to stress. This finding is of particular note for teens, as many experience high levels of stress, and animal-assisted therapy has a profound impact in calming them.
The CASPCA has partnered with Community Attention Foster Families (CAFF), which has been providing foster care services in our area since 1976, to bring at-risk teens to our shelter to interact with our animals. “Animals are more than just companionship; they can be healing,” says Elizabeth Williams, a senior family service specialist for the City of Charlottesville. “Our partnership with the SPCA allows our at-risk and underserved youth to connect with animals that are also in transition and unsure about what is next. It’s incredibly therapeutic and an amazing opportunity.” CAFF works with children of all ages, providing short, long and permanent placements for children. The majority of the children that CAFF work with are survivors of abuse and neglect. Many of them also have emotional problems, behavioral problems, school difficulties, developmental delays or are in sibling groups that need to stay together. While visiting the CASPCA, the teens interact with adoptable animals, learn about animal care and health, what it takes to be a responsible pet owner and spend time
with certified pet-therapy teams. Williams says that the CASPCA visits are the highlight of the teens’ week, and the teens who visit agree. “Spending time with Jessie and other animals helped me feel more normal,” says teenager D’Ann Griego (pictured above). “I appreciate giving and receiving affection without worrying about all the problems in the real world.”

We would like to thank the Estate of Vernon Mowbray for the generous gift executed by Mr. Mowbray’s friend, Lynwood Napier, of T&N Printing.
Make a recurring donation. It’s easy to set up an ongoing payment through our website. Recurring monthly payments are an easy way to support the shelter throughout the year. Give your time. Volunteers are an invaluable part of the CASPCA team. They help our animals in so many ways— whether cat socializing, dog walking or chipping in at events, our volunteers are critical to our life-saving mission. Email volunteer@caspca.org or fill out the volunteer form on our website for more information today.
THANKS, PAWTNER Virginia National Bank has been an invaluable partner in our mission to save the homeless, sick and neglected animals in our community. Their stewardship of the pawtnership program has helped us provide the very best care and services for the thousands of dogs and cats we see every year. They have sponsored our Pet of the Month, made appearances at events, and their logo is highlighted at our facility, in our lobby and on our website. Thank you, Virginia National Bank, for your support! Please ask us today about how your business or organization can become a CASPCA Pawtner.
