Welcome Another year has crept up on us so quickly, and before we realize we will be saying goodbye to 2015. Time will therefore be of the essence for us to put our thoughts into action if we are to make 2015 a memorable one. The CB Group has had a successful 2014 and we expect this positive trend to continue into 2015. Notwithstanding our successes to date, the country continues to face challenges with the constant devaluation of the dollar, the high cost of borrowing and the variability of commodities prices, to name a few – factors that could affect us positively or negatively. Internally, we too are faced with challenges which we have to manage on a daily basis. Of course, this has only been possible through the continued hard work and dedication

welcome

of all of our managers and staff throughout the Group, and here I must say- A big thank you for all your efforts. We are also mindful of our social responsibilities and are quite happy to share with our customers and consumers whenever economic forces allow us to do so; as seen recently with the reduction of prices for all products across all brands and the numerous charities that we continue to support. As a group we are positive about our future and the possibilities over the short term. Let us therefore work together, as a team, to make this year our best year yet, for our company, as well as for ourselves. All the very best,

Garth Channer

Chief Financial Officer

Copperwood Pork, The Healthy Option Love Your Pork And Lose Weight: Pork Lovers Are In Luck! According to a new study published in the Purdue University journal ‘Obesity’, researchers found that including protein from lean pork in your diet can help you lose weight while maintaining more lean tissue, including muscle. The pork dieters rated themselves more positively in terms of overall mood and happiness during dieting compared to those who ate less protein. Those that ate more protein, with pork as their only source of meat, felt fuller, longer after meals.

Did You Know?

CALORIES PER SERVING

According to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), pork tenderloin contains the same amount of fat and slightly less calories than the same serving of skinless chicken breast. Today’s most popular cuts of pork have 16% less total fat and 27% less saturated fat than they did 20 years ago. In fact, cuts of pork that come from the loin - including chops and roasts - are the leanest cuts of pork available.

Now dieters have more options than ever to make lean, healthy choices when planning meals. Pork really is ‘the Other white Meat’

Compare Pork: Tired Of Chicken And Fish? The high-protein diet included 6 ounces, or two servings, of pork every day. It’s easy to reach this goal by including lean cuts of pork like Canadian bacon with your eggs for breakfast, adding grilled or sautéed pork chop strips to your salad at lunch, or roasting pork tenderloin for dinner. Check the recipe corner of this ChatBout for a great lean, healthy pork recipe!

Garvey Maceo High School Gets Water Tank For Agricultural Use Courtesy Of CB Group

We recently installed a 1,000 gallon water tank at the Garvey Maceo High School in Clarendon. The school had the winning debate team at the Youth Climate Change Conference 2014, which we sponsored. The tank will be used primarily in the school’s agricultural activities and lessons. Three other schools received 1,000 gallon water tanks: -Eltham High School – Spanish Town; Dinthill Technical School – Linstead; and Claremont All Age School – Lucea. These tanks were donated to schools identified as having a serious need.

A Day In The Life Of…

Carolyn Taylor (Supervisor, St. Ann Agency)

1. How long have you been a member of the CB Group? I’ve been a member of the CB Group for approximately four (4) years.

2. What section of the group are you in and what is your role? I work in the Logistics Department as a Supervisor for the St. Ann’s Bay Agency. My role is to oversee all shipping and sales accounting activities.

3. What is the best part about working at CB? The best part about working with CB is the job security that comes from knowing that I am a part of a group that is so diverse, that has grown significantly and is still growing—a group with a future. The diversity of the group also provides many opportunities and support for personal growth and development.

4. Describe a typical day for you from the moment you arrive at work till when you leave. I usually start with checking the temperature log to ensure that the freezers are working at the required temperatures, after which I would check my emails to see if there is anything that needs urgent attention. My next task would usually be to check and update all my inventory reports to confirm the quantity of our inventory on hand. I sometimes walk the freezers to confirm the quantity and quality of stock on hand. Most of the rest of the day is usually spent checking and reconciling all the billing and cashiering transactions. The day usually ends with balancing the cashier, sending off the lodgment with the couriers and checking the temperatures of the freezers.

That experience provided me with a greater understanding and appreciation of CB’s commitment to producing quality chicken products. 5. What gets you through a hectic work day? Prayer; a scripture for encouragement; focusing on the task to be completed for the day; support from my team members and a good laugh.

6. What is your favourite CB product? My favourite CB product is Copperwood Pork spare ribs.

7. If you could be in another section of the group for a day, where would you go and why? Copperwood Farms, our pork processing facility. I had the privilege to visit the chicken plant at Arnold Road and I was very impressed. That experience provided me with a greater understanding and appreciation of CB’s commitment to producing quality chicken products. I ship pork products every day and I am very impressed with the range of pork products we offer. A visit to Copperwood Farms would certainly satisfy my curiosity about how these products are produced.

8. What has been your most embarassing moment at work? My most embarrassing moment was walking into a closed gate that was usually open. I was on my way to my office after speaking to a customer on the outside, I was reading a document with my head down and only realized that the gate was closed without my knowledge when my forehead made a solid connection with the metal gate in full view of customers. The pain was bad, but the embarrassment was WORSE. My customers were thoughtful, they did not laugh and I moved to my office as quickly as I could to cover my shame and ease my pain.

9. Name your favourite chicken/pork dish. Barbequed spare ribs with Yellow Heart roasted breadfruit.

Blood Donation Facts 1. One pint of blood can save up to three lives. 2. Many patients with severe sickle cell disease receive blood transfusions every month. 3. Heart Health Tips For The Month of Love Here are some great tips to keep your heart healthy in time for Valentine’s day; they won’t stop a broken heart, but they’ll keep you in great shape! Stop smoking—no ifs, ands, or butts. This nasty habit is one of the top controllable risk factors for heart disease. The Ministry of Health and more than likely your mum recommend stubbing out this addiction to make a huge difference in your overall health. Move it, move it, move it. A new study from Australia found that sitting for long periods of time could shorten your life regardless of your body weight. It appears that being a couch potato has an unhealthy influence on blood fats and blood sugar. At the office, work in “get up” breaks, and go for a stroll.

tid bits — heart health tips for the month of love

. TID BITS Instead Of Resolutions, Make A C ontract With Yourself!

Go nuts. Almonds, walnuts, pecans, and other tree nuts deliver a powerful punch for lowering your risk of cardiovascular and coronary heart disease. The American Heart Association suggests that substituting foods high in saturated fats with nuts helps reduce bad (LDL) cholesterol. Watch Your Waistline The risks to heart health that are associated with obesity include heart attacks, heart failure, CVD and CHD, along with a whole host of other negative health effects. Choose a balanced diet that is low in saturated fat and high in lean protein, fruits and vegetables, healthy oils and whole, unprocessed grains. Get Omega 3 fatty acids in your diet Omega-3 fatty acids are a type of unsaturated fatty acid that may reduce inflammation throughout the body. Inflammation in the body can damage your blood vessels and lead to heart disease. They can also decrease triglycerides, lower blood pressure, reduce blood clotting, decrease stroke and heart failure risk, reduce irregular heartbeats, and in children may improve learning ability. Our Smart Eggs are a great source of these Omega 3 fatty acids.
