Welcome There is much to celebrate within the CB Group as there have been a number of developments that we will learn about as we dive further into this issue of our Ezine. We welcome the start of a new financial year with good news of our performance last year. We saw solid growth at all facilities and for all brands within the CB Group and with your continued effort, we will enjoy more years of growth. Congratulations are in order for our first group of contract farmers who, after tireless months of incredible team effort, have achieved ISO 9001:2008, HACCP and GMP international certifications for their farms. This is a momentous achievement for not only CB Group, but for the individual farmers who are producing a superior product that is on par with those found in larger markets. We are very proud of them and are working on certifying another group in the coming months. Recently, we have seen a number of promotions within the group and salute each person for their outstanding contribution. Also, there have been a number of departmental changes which offer team members additional opportunities for growth and align the company to better compete in the local and export markets. As we look towards the 2014-2015 financial year, I encourage you all to be prudent in your financial affairs, work hard to achieve your objectives and recommit to the goals and ideals of our great company—The CB Group.
Garth Channer Chief Financial Officer
welcome

SAFE Food:
From Our Farms, to Your Family. WHERE DO WE GET OUR FOOD FROM?
ISO 9001: 2008 HACCP GMP
Most people would say a supermarket or store, when in fact we get our food from farmers. Farming and food are very important to our community and play a key role in our economy. Farmers are independent business people who provide an essential product, and for us, our CB Farmers are no different.
CB has a long history of working closely with our farmers to ensure that the quality of birds offered to our consumers is superior. Just as important are sustainable and viable farming practices, which ensure the success of our farmers, and the safety of the foods we consume. When we embarked upon our Safe Food movement over four years ago, various companies within the CB Group received ISO 9001: 2008, HACCP and GMP certification, but we knew that was just the start. The “Safe Food” chain would not be complete if we did not include our Farmers in the process. And, without any hesitation, the first tier of farmers began their journey to certification. One year later, fourteen of our Farmers who participated in the certification process were all successful and are now ISO 9001: 2008, HACCP and GMP certified.

Shines at Chefs on Show The Culinary Federation of Jamaica hosted its annual fundraising event in April for the national culinary team that will represent the island at the Taste of the Caribbean finals to be held in June in Miami, Florida. Several local companies were there for the culinary celebration including Copperwood Pork. Scents of roasted meat and spices greeted us at Copperwood Pork’s booth which was a clear crowd favourite. Choices of disturbingly delicious items such as corned pork rundown with crispy breadfruit, smoked pork shoulder & three sausage alfredo created by Chef Gairy Bowes and his team, caused little wonder why everyone who had a taste were asking for more! Here are scenes from the festivities:

A Bigga Betta Badda Expo Jamaica 2014 The baddest dawgs on the block made their debut at the Jamaica Manufacturers’ Association and Jamaica Exporters’ Association’s “EXPO JAMAICA 2014” held in April. Bad Dawg Sausages was one of three local brands present in the food court at the expo, and let’s just say, “It SELL Off!” Patrons just couldn’t get enough of our sausages and were eager to be a part of the Bad Dawg experience. Our presence at the EXPO gained great media coverage, phenomenal sales and interest from other companies who stopped by for a taste.

Smart Eggs has a new look! We’ve launched a new label and now offer a 12 pack of eggs, but don’t worry, the 7 pack is still available. We also thought it was important to share the health benefits of Omega 3 fatty acids so we included several facts on the inside labels of both packages. It’s a Smart look, wouldn’t you say?

Teachers for a Day—JA in a Day (Kingston, Jamaica) Imagine spending an entire school day with a classroom full of students who are eager to learn about entrepreneurship and excited to be taught by volunteers from the Private Sector. On Friday May 9, twelve staff volunteers from the CB Group did just that. Playing the role of teacher for the day, the volunteers visited the Convent of Mercy Alpha Academy to deliver Junior Achievement’s “JA Be Entrepreneurial” program and share their real world experiences.
attentive. I lift my hats off to those who teach every day!” stated Alicia Bogues, Brand Manager CB Chicken and Bad Dawg Sausages. JA in a Day is a unique focus program, which has been implemented to increase Junior Achievement’s hands-on programming for youth in Jamaica. The CB Group is a proud supporter and sponsor of Junior Achievement Jamaica. With the on-going support of educators and positive adult role models who volunteer their time, Junior Achievement’s economic education programs focus on three key content areas: work readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy. These experiences empower young people to own their future economic success.
Two staff volunteers led each Grade 10 class of forty students. The JA Be Entrepreneurial program examines the characteristics and practices of successful entrepreneurs; choosing the right product, knowing your customer, and the importance of having a competitive-advantage. It also educates the students about marketing, financing, management, and ethical decision-making. Yanique Taylor, Process Manager at Junior Achievement Jamaica noted, “We are delighted that the CB Group continued its partnership with Junior Achievement Jamaica to return to Alpha to deliver JA Be Entrepreneurial, which empowers youth in the area of entrepreneurship,” “When Yanique contacted me about the JA in a Day program, there was no hesitation. Last year we engaged the 9th grade students about the Global Marketplace, which was extremely rewarding for both the students and staff. It was important that we return to Alpha for continuity and play our part to inspire these young women. All the students remembered us and were so

Our Catchers
The entire Live Haulage Catchers Group is comprised of 12 catchers, 3 forklift operators along with Lead Catcher, Howard Mckenzie and Haulage Supervisor Astley Thompson. 2. What is the best part about working at CB? - Astley Thompson – The CB treatment is very good, better than any job I’ve had, and I’ve worked with both the Government and Private sector. - Clive Brown – Catching chickens! 3. Describe a typical day for you from the moment you arrive at work till when you leave. Starting at midnight, we’re picked up from our homes by McKenzie and Thompson. We all live just outside of May Pen. Sometimes it takes us 45 mins to 2.5 hours to get to the farms, but it never seems too long because we’re excited to catch! When we get to the farm, the forklift is serviced and fuelled, then we get our gloves, dust masks, protective eyewear and CB cap, and then we get to the real job: Catching.
4. What gets you through a hectic work day? Praying!!!
5. What is your favorite CB product? CB Chicken, Caribbean Passion meats and Bad Dawg sausages, don’t forget Bad Dawg!
6. If you could be in another section of the group for a day, where would you go and why? Astley Thompson - Arnold Road, so that I could understand the process after they receive chickens. Robert Coke - The Hatchery, so that I could observe how the chickens hatch and that process. That sounds good. Omar Langley & Delroy ByField - We would love to go to all the different locations of the company, and experience a little bit of everything within the Group.
7. What has been your most embarassing moment at work? If and when we have a break down at the processing plant. It breaks the work flow!
8. Name your favorite chicken/pork dish. French Fried, Jerk, Baked and Curried Chicken

How To Use the Internet Responsibly At Work
You may not want to admit it, but nearly everyone uses their employer’s Internet for their own personal uses while they’re at work. You know, like checking your friends’ Facebook status updates, watching YouTube videos, or browsing for that new car you want to buy. But, if you’re not careful, it could get you into big trouble. Be smart while using your employer’s Internet, and follow these simple dos and don’ts:
DON’T:
• Download files illegally (e.g., music, movies, books, etc.) or visit unsafe/inappropriate websites. • Look for a job using your current employer’s Internet. • Post opinions, negative or rude remarks about your employer/ co-workers on social media sites. • Send out personal emails using your professional email address. • Store personal files on your work computer. Management and other staff may have the right to access any material in your email or on your computer at any time!
DO: • • • •
Ask about your employer’s Internet usage and social media policy carefully. Use the Internet for your own personal use on your unpaid lunch break only. Use encryption and passwords to protect both work and personal data. Be honest if you’re confronted by your manager. Lying about your actions or intentions will only make the situation worse in the long run.
