Welcome We have already reached the second month in the new financial year! Truly the CB Group has overcome many hurdles thus far, each of which has pushed us to achieve all we have today and all we aspire for tomorrow. As part of this month’s welcome message, I’d like to share with you a belief I hold dear to my heart and with which I try to live my day to day life: that is the need for continuous improvement. There is no better way to take this company to the next level than by focusing on what we can do as individuals to improve our own ability. Never be content with where you are or settle into thinking you have reached your full potential. I assure you there is a whole host of opportunities waiting for you. Furthering your development through training opens doors you never dreamed you would be able to walk through. So I ask you, what are you currently doing well and what can you improve on? Now is the

welcome

time to capitalize on your strengths and brush up on your weaknesses. Engage your peers, search the internet, read a book, whatever you can get your hands on to sharpen your skills and add even more value to the CB Group. We strive to continually improve because success is not a destination – it is a journey. As we journey together, we trust the Lord that this year will be another record-breaking year, not because of our own efforts, but because we can do all things only by His grace and His strength. All our accomplishments are to His glory and praise. Join me in a simple prayer as we look forward to what lies ahead:

Dear God, we thank You for Your many blessings on this Group of Companies. We recognize that if it were not for You, none of what we have achieved today could be possible and we are truly thankful. Please guide us as we journey through another year. We look to You as the author and finisher of our faith. In Jesus name, Amen.

At the BIG FEED we’re committed to the success of our customers, both internal and external. Through our own offices, and as part of the CB Group, veterinarians are on hand to support both our Group contract farmers and Nutramix Customers throughout their operations. Our farmers know their animals; they work to detect and prevent issues with animal health and well-being, but vets are the ultimate on-farm experts in overseeing all aspects of pig and poultry health. April, 25th, 2015 was Veterinarian Day and NUTRAMIX celebrated the contribution veterinary science makes to Jamaica. Vets are very important to a farm’s success, offering support to our farmers when they need it most. While doing farm visits, veterinarians perform tasks such as: • Overseeing the administration and use of medications (taking inventories of medicine) • Calculating withdrawal dates for antibiotics to comply with required standards • Giving on farm advice for Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) • Coordinate farmers workshops island wide to demonstrate good management and husbandry

A Day In The Life Of… How long have you been working with the CB Group?

Dr. Gabrielle Young cb big ups — a day in the life of… dr. young

Since, April 2003 as a field veterinarian for NUTRAMIX, and I also worked with the Field Office and our chicken operations - I was the only vet at the time so I really was all over – This was before we had Newport Genetics and all of that What section of the Group are you in and what is your role? I am currently with our feed mill – Newport Mills, I’m a Veterinarian attached to the sales team and I am also involved with the export of feed. I’m an everything kind of person. For you, what is the best part about working at CB? Truly - working with the farmers. Because they are just average, normal everyday people and they are so great to be around. Always pleasant – I love our farmers.

16

Describe a typical day for you from the moment you arrive at work until you leave. It can range from visiting farms of varying sizes and levels and dealing with any species of animals (because I do all species that we provide feed for) and having workshops with from 80-100 farmers. These workshops can be for any animal species as well – all creatures great and small. What gets you through a hectic work day?

I love the people I work with. I would never leave my team or my farmers.

My sales team – those guys keep me calm when I’m ready to burst – they are a great team and really get me through. What is your favourite CB product? Bad Dawg Sausages, definitely. If you could be in another section of the group for a day, where would you go and why? Nowhere else – I love the people I work with. I would never leave my team or my farmers. What has been your most embarrassing moment at work? I don’t really get embarrassed easily, so I’m not sure. I kind of just roll with the punches. Name your favourite chicken/ pork dish? BBQ or Grilled Copperwood Pork Chops – from home, I’m not a big fan of eating out so much.

Mom’s Pineapple Upside-down Cake INGREDIENTS –– –– ––

–– ––

50g butter, plus extra for greasing 50g soft light brown sugar 1 large can of pineapple rings in juice (about 7 rings), drained well Splash of dark rum or a squeeze of lime 8 maraschino cherries

Directions 1.

Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas Mark 4.

2.

Melt the butter in frying pan over a high heat and immediately add sugar.

3.

Stir continuously until dissolved and syrupy, add pineapple rings, placing one in the middle and the rest around the outside, and cook them for 3-4 mins so they get good colour on the bottom.

For the sponge: –– –– –– –– –– –– –– –– ––

125g butter, at room temperature 125g soft light brown sugar Pinch of salt 2 Smart Eggs Grated zest of ½ lemon A few drops of vanilla extract 125g plain flour 1 ½ tsp baking powder Good pinch of ground cinnamon

4.

Keep spooning the butter and sugar mixture over them, so the tops are coated and caramelised.

5.

Add rum, or lime juice and cook for a further minute until thick and syrupy.

6.

Take the pan off the heat, place a cherry in the centre of each pineapple ring and set aside.

recipe corner — mom’s pineapple upside-down cake

For the sponge: 1.

Cream together the butter, sugar and salt in a medium bowl. Next, add the eggs, one at a time, beating hard between each addition.

2.

Add lemon zest and vanilla and mix for a few seconds.

3.

Stir in flour, baking powder and cinnamon until well mixed.

4.

Carefully spoon the mixture in dollops around the tops of the pineapple rings.

5.

Gently spread the mixture out evenly using the back of the spoon until completely covered, being careful not to drag along any syrup that rises up.

6.

Bake on the middle shelf of the oven for 30-35 mins, or until a skewer into the centre of the cake comes out clean. The cake should be golden on top, feel springy to the touch and smell cooked.

7.

Leave to cool for a few minutes before carefully turning the cake out onto a large plate.

Serve with vanilla ice cream

If you’re not drinking tea yet, read up on these 10 ways tea does your body good. 1. Tea contains antioxidants that protect your body from the damage of aging and the effects of pollution. 2. Coffee usually has two to three times the caffeine of tea. If drinking coffee gives you the jitters, causes indigestion or headaches or interferes with sleep -- switch to tea. 3. Tea may reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke. Drinking tea may help keep your arteries smooth and clog-free, the same way a drain keeps your bathroom pipes clear.

Top 10 health benefits of drinking tea

4. Tea protects your bones. One study that compared tea drinkers with non-drinkers, found that people who drank tea for 10 or more years had the strongest bones, even after adjusting for age, body weight, exercise, smoking and other risk factors. 5. Tea gives you a sweet smile. Tea itself actually contains fluoride and tannins that may keep plaque at bay. So add unsweetened tea drinking to your daily dental routine of brushing and flossing for healthier teeth and gums. 6. Drinking tea may help your body’s immune system fight off infection. When 21 volunteers drank either five cups of tea or coffee each day for four weeks, researchers saw higher immune system activity in the blood of the tea drinkers. 7. Tea protects against cancer. Thank the antioxidants found in tea, once again for their cancer-fighting effects. There are enough studies that show the potential protective effects of drinking tea to make adding tea to your list of daily beverages. 8. Tea helps keep you hydrated. Since caffeine is a diuretic and makes us pee more, the thought was that caffeinated beverages couldn’t contribute to our overall fluid requirement. However, recent research has shown that the caffeine really doesn’t matter -- tea and other caffeinated beverages definitely contribute to our fluid needs. 9. Tea doesn’t have any calories, unless you add sweetener or milk. Consuming even 250 fewer calories per day can result in losing one pound per week. If you’re looking for a satisfying, caloriefree beverage, tea is a top choice. 10. Green tea has been shown to actually increase metabolic rate so that you can burn 70 to 80 additional calories by drinking just five cups of green tea per day. Over a year’s time you could lose eight pounds just by drinking green tea.

Office Etiquette Office Etiquette or Office Manners is about conducting yourself respectfully and courteously in the office or workplace There are some simple tips that we could all remember to make the workplace more comfortable for everyone • Say, “Please; Thank you; You’re welcome”, as part of your everyday courtesy • Be discreet and compassionate in your criticism of a co-worker • Don’t gossip about any co-worker’s private life • Do not try to sell things to your colleagues • Don’t hover around while waiting for a co-worker to get off the phone. Leave a note for them to call you or return later • Avoid sexist comments about a co-worker’s dress or appearance • Surveys show that the office know-it-all proved to be the biggest gripe amongst co-workers. Don’t be a know-it-all • Take responsibility for your mistakes, apologise and go about correcting the mistakes • Apologise if you are clearly in the wrong. If in doubt, apologise anyway. It’s no big deal • Never blame someone else if it is your mistake • ‘Mute’ your cell phone in the office. No fancy ring tones • Office Etiquette extends to the Office Kitchen which may be cleaned only once a day. If so, clean up after yourself so that the office kitchen remains clean, tidy and hygienic for those using the facilities after you
