what to wear to pan cb chicken: spicy mango BBQ chicken
energy saving tips
Wel come It’s time again to enjoy yet another issue of our now widely anticipated, monthly Ezine, “Chat Bout”. The success of this newsletter is further proof of the innovativeness and resourcefulness of the CB family. Another source of tremendous joy has been our ISO 9001:2008, GMP and HACCP certifications, which have had a very positive impact on the CB Group. Although the certification of our grow-out operations, including our contract growers, is ongoing, it has highlighted the extent of the reach of our certification programs, which have been embraced by over forty farmers and their families. Within the framework of our ISO 9001 quality management system, we have also been targeting innovation as one of the drivers for success. The development of “Chat Bout”, the ten new solid wall chicken houses at Imagination Farm and our new Bad Dawg Sausages chicken offering, “Yard Fowl”, are just a few visible examples of this emphasis. In the future, this drive will become even more apparent. At a time when the country continues to focus its effort on exports, the CB Group has been expanding its export markets as we have recently gained entry into Trinidad and Guyana, leading with our animal feeds. We hope this trend will continue as we seek to earn much needed foreign exchange to help buffer the effects of the sliding Jamaican dollar. As we close out the first quarter of the 2014-2015 financial year, the challenges we face on a daily basis remain many, but our vision is clear, our resolve strong, our people hardworking and we press on to even greater success.
Dr. Velton Gooden Head, Quality & Exports

The Pan Chicken Championship kicked off its 2014 road trip with a stop in the hills of Mandeville at Manchester High School on Saturday, July 5. On a beautiful, clear day, patrons came out in their numbers to enjoy the best pan chicken in town. For just $300, guests gobbled up chicken seasoned to perfection with Spur Tree Spices Jerk Seasoning served with soft, mouthwatering National Hardo Bread and topped with thick Grace Tomato Ketchup for extra flavour. With Red Stripe deals running at $300 for 3 cans, visitors washed down their tasty meals and kept cool throughout the day with the island’s most refreshing beer. On stage, Pretty Boy Floyd got everyone excited with plenty of giveaways, Wizard, the talented magician from Seaview Gardens, wowed with his amazing tricks, while Jermaine Edwards and Bugle got the crowd pumped up with energetic performances of their biggest hits.

There was non-stop excitement as football fanatics watched their favourite teams during the day’s World Cup matches thanks to Pepsi’s “ultimate fan zone” and children enjoyed clowns and face painting in their very own Kiddies’ Village. It was a great day filled with prizes, amazing music and of course, delicious food. Next stop: Portmore! See you there!

“Front Runner” Makes Its Mark On The Horse Industry Front Runner has been around for over fifteen years. Unlike Nutramix branded feeds, Front Runner is packaged in brightly coloured bags, a dominant yellow with green and red markings, making it quite eye-catching. With this packaging, farmers and horse handlers will never make the mistake of giving their animals the wrong type of feed. Over the years, interest in the brand has grown and it has been embraced by different sectors within the horse industry. Today, we can proudly say Front Runner or the “yellow bag” as it is referred to, has
become the preferred brand for most horse breeders, owners, trainers and other individuals involved in horse sports and leisure activities. Such has been the success of this feed that most breeding operations in Jamaica are our customers. Top among this group are Orange Valley Estates Limited, Everglades Farms, Ham Stables, New Blue Limited, Argyll Farms and Sun Valley Farms, which account for over 70% of the breeding mares in the country and are home to the top stallions in the industry. On the race track, Front Runner has become even more popular. Fourteen time

champion trainer, Mr. Wayne DaCosta, feeds his horses Front Runner and from the current list of 2014’s top-ten trainers, eight use the brand. Horses fed on Front Runner have won all the major classic races at Caymanas Park over the last three years including the Jamaica Derby, the Guineas, the Jamaica Oaks and the St. Ledger. Following its success locally, Newport Mills is responding to regional demands for Front Runner, and is now exporting the brand to Curacao, Aruba, Barbados and Antigua, with plans in motion for future shipments to Trinidad.

Creating Bonds
in Our Communities 12
Junior Achievement introduces children to the business world. Junior Achievement along with the Rotary Club of Kingston and the Ministry of Education are taking on a bold, new project, BizTown, which will teach young kids about money and business. About 10,000 grade 5 students per year are expected to take part in a programme that is new to Jamaica but has been successfully used in the US, Canada and Latin America. Opening in October 2014, BizTown, which will be based at Caenwood Centre in Kingston, will have replicas of Jamaican businesses, with 11 stores including a bank and restaurant. Children will first participate in a 4-6 week course at their schools, where they will learn about companies in their community, the way the businesses are set up and the different roles employees have within an organization. Students will apply for their “dream jobs” at BizTown, with teachers deciding which children will get positions. Once classes are finished, the youngsters will visit BizTown, where they will work and earn their own money. Giving kids a first-hand experience of the working world will show them what their parents have to do to pay the bills and will teach them to appreciate money.
Several sponsors: Guardsman Group, JPS, the Yellow Pages and CB, have already signed up to have stores at BizTown. Their financial contributions will help to manage the programme and provide free entry for students. CB is also in talks with Junior Achievement to assist with meals and snacks served to the children while they’re visiting the property. “I want to ensure that when our kids are growing up, they can get excited about their future,” shares Alphie Mullings-Aiken, Junior Achievement President. “I really want them to change their outlook on what education means: school isn’t just something they have to do but it’s going to help them prepare for their future and their future profession,” she explains.
Photos show BizTown stores, which are small replicas of actual Jamaican companies, under construction before their October 2014 opening.

5.
4. Jeans Jeans are definitely the ‘must wear’ clothing for hanging out at the Pan Chicken Championship. From shorts to skirts to pants, a nice pair of loose fitting jeans gives you a chance to show of your style while comfortably enjoying the day’s activities.

5. Bags With all the excitement taking place at Pan Chicken, you need somewhere safe and secure to keep your valuables. With cash, keys, cell phones and other items you’ll be carrying around, your pockets may not be big or deep enough to do the trick. So bring along a small, lightweight bag that you can throw over your shoulder or secure around your waist to make sure everything stays in its place.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF…
Renniesha Wellington Livestock Attendant, Newport Genetics I was taught by my grandmother to believe that at the end of a day of hard work there will always be a reward. It’s this belief that keeps me going during a hectic day.

1. How long have you been a member of the CB Group? I have been working with the CB Group for three years and seven months.
2. What section of the group are you in and what is your role? I work as a Livestock Attendant at Newport Genetics, which falls under the Pork division.
3. What is the best part about working at CB? The best part of working at CB is that there is always room for learning and continuous development through various training sessions with both internal staff members and overseas personnel.
4. Describe a typical day for you from the moment you arrive at work till when you leave. When I get to work, the first thing I have to do is shower in keeping with bio-security protocol. After, I check the animals for mortality, signs of illness, and injuries, and treat any sick animals. I also do general checks of the environmental temperature, infrastructure, nipple drinker, crates, etc., in the farrowing barn. If I observe anything out of the norm then I report it to my manager immediately. I top up the feed that’s running low and at 8:00 a.m. I help out with breeding, heat checking and cleaning up the gestation bar. Once I’m finished, I go back to the farrowing barn to process piglets, treat sick animals as required and clean up each room. After lunch, I do general checks in the barn, feed the animals, and I may help with deworming, vaccinating or shipping. At 2:00 p.m. each afternoon, we do heat checking and breeding. At the end of the work day, I check all the rooms to ensure the animals are cared for properly and report any issues to my manager.
5. What gets you through a hectic work day? I was taught by my grandmother to believe that at the end of a day of hard work there will always be a reward. It might not be tangible but it’s this belief that keeps me going during a hectic day.
6. What is your favourite CB product? My favorite CB product is CB Chicken.
7. If you could be in another section of the group for a day, where would you go and why? If I could be in another section of the group I would choose the feed mills. Since I always want to ensure that animals are cared for, working on their nutrition would allow me to play a major role in their proper growth and development.
8. What has been your most embarassing moment at work? My most embarrassing moment at work would be the day I fainted on the job and had to be taken to the doctor.
9. Name your favourite chicken/pork dish. My favorite pork dish is jerk pork with fried breadfruit or festival. Yummy!

Featured above is one of the flag’s very first designs.
1. In 1961, the government launched a public competition to design a national flag for Jamaica. 2. The prize for creating the winning design was £100. 3. 368 entries were received and 12 designs were shortlisted. 4. After the competition closed, a special panel of judges couldn’t agree on which design to choose. 5. To move forward on the flag’s design, Prime Minister Alexander Bustamante created a committee with members from both political parties to work on the project. 6. One of the flag designs the committee seriously considered included a centre black band with gold and green stripes above and below it (see above). 7. Keeping the colour scheme: black representing strength, gold: natural wealth and sunlight, and green: hope and agricultural resources, the committee eventually agreed to the island’s current national flag.

As temperatures climb to new highs, beating the heat this summer could end up costing you big time. Continuously running ACs and fans may offer some relief from steamy days and toasty nights but expensive electricity bills are sure to stress anyone out. No need to sweat your energy costs, just follow these 10 easy tips to keep your utility bills in check: 1. Cut down on how long you leave your heater on. Try running it for only 30 minutes in the morning and again for 30 minutes in the evening.
Wednesdays and Fridays. Avoid unplugging the fridge over the weekends as households are usually busier on Saturdays and Sundays.
2. Iron only once per week and for no more than two hours.
7. Use cold water in your washing machine. Most of the energy used by the machine, up to 90%, is used to heat water.
3. Get rid of your old, inefficient bulbs and switch to energy saving fluorescent bulbs.
8. Air dry clothing instead of using a dryer.
4. Use a power strip for your electronics and turn it off when you’re not using the devices.
9. Encourage your child to play outside: cutting back on time spent watching TV and surfing the net.
5. Let your food cool before putting it in the refrigerator.
10. Request an energy audit to find out which activities in your household use the most energy. The report will also provide suggestions on how you can conserve.
6. Unplug your refrigerator when it is cool between 11:00 p.m. - 5:00 a.m. every other day on Mondays,
