Caribbean Broilers Career Builders Clearly Better Choice Brands Creating Bonds Corporate Backbone And now - Chat Bout! In two months’ time, our November edition will mark ONE year since we’ve launched our new CBG e-Zine and newsletter, proudly dubbed, Chat Bout. When we dreamed up a monthly publication, the goal was to keep you “in the know on a timely basis”. We envisioned a publication coming out at the beginning of the month, which told you all the good things that had recently happened and all the exciting events you could look forward to. As you would have seen, we’ve struggled with the “timely basis” side of that equation with the e-Zines being distributed towards the end of the month on average. No one likes old news and we apologize for this! I’m happy to report that the early kinks have been worked out. Starting with the next edition, you should see a marked difference. We aim to have the newsletters reach your hand within the first week of the month.

welcome

As with most things, there’s a lot more that goes on behind the scenes than people realize and so while we look forward to more informative, engaging and timely editions, I do want to pause to say thank you to the team that works diligently to put this publication together each month. Alicia Bogues and Kereen Cole from the Marketing Team, Tanneithia Findley from the HRD Team and our marketing partners - Sarah, Danielle, Stephanie, Gabrielle, Kristina, Lyndsey and Joni! We appreciate all the time and effort you put into this and look forward to many more! Cheers,

ML Chief Operating Officer

Light showers didn’t stop Portmore residents from having a great time at the recent CB Pan Chicken Championship at UDC Car Park. The day was jam packed with tasty pan chicken prepared by the East’s most talented chefs and served with freshly baked National Hardough bread and thirst quenching drinks from Pepsi and Red Stripe. There were plenty activities for the kiddies: from face painting to snapping pics in our cool photo booth, and of course, incredible performances by Lubert Levy, Krushal and I-Octane.

ROAD HOG HITS THE ROAD DURING ‘UP IN SMOKE’ TOUR In August, we took our one-of-a-kind, mobile smoker on a tour of select customers’ parking lots. There, we had expert grillmaster, Sean Levy, cooking up some mouthwatering, country style ribs in a super comfortable lounge complete with music and drinks flowing all day long. Don’t take our word for it! Check out scenes from our ‘Up in Smoke’ tour, which included a fun stop in the Second City: Montego Bay.

Newport Mills Adopts Innovative Storage System Until recently, large warehouses were considered the only safe storage for soybean meal. This option, however, requires handling by bob-cats and frontend loaders, and calls for many persons to dig and sweep. In an attempt to find a safer and better organized way to store the product, Newport Mills set out to find a different method. A combination of US, French, Jamaican and Dutch engineering has created one of the world’s first facilities where soybean meal is stored in silos or massive containers. Built for large scale inventory, each of the two silos at Newport Mills can store up to 2 million pounds of the product. Using the practice of First In-First Out, the company is able to guarantee the freshest soybean meal to customers without spoilage or contamination. This groundbreaking storage has already started to attract attention from overseas, with visitors from the Dominican Republic and The Netherlands coming in to look at the way Newport Mills constructed its modern facility. This notable innovation is yet another example of how Newport Mills is leading the way in transforming our local farming sector.

Our New Chicken Houses: Imagination Farms Over the last few months, the CB Group has been busy working on the construction of 10 new chicken houses at its flagship property, Imagination Farm. CB has always been a forwardthinking organization and this special project continues to build on that legacy. The company was the first in Jamaica to construct and own solid-sided poultry houses, and now, its hit another important milestone with 70,000 baby chicks placed in the first two buildings at Imagination Farm. CB’s hardworking teams, led by Audley Raymore, Eaton Barrett, Hubert Blair, Wilfred Lopez and Cheryl Watt, committed countless man hours to this project. With Imagination Farm complete, the CB Group proudly shows Jamaica and the world, its creativity, its boldness and its undeniable determination to become the best agricultural company in the Caribbean.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF…

ANGELLA MULLINGS

Trayer, Traying Department, Caribbean Hatchery 1. How long have you been a member of the CB Group? I have been working with the CB Group for 18 years.

2. What section of the group are you in and what is your role? I am based at the Hatchery where I work as a Trayer. I am responsible for sorting the eggs by checking the shell quality and shape, and looking for black spots. I also ensure that the point of the egg is turned down as this allows for good embryonic development; if it’s in the wrong position, the embryo could potentially die. Additionally, on Sundays, I work in the office: sorting pullet chickens and dispatching chickens to farm stores.

16

3. What is the best part about working at CB? I enjoy working in the office on Sundays and interacting with customers as they come in to collect their baby chicks.

4. Describe a typical day for you from the moment you arrive at work till when you leave. Since I am a task worker, I don’t have a fixed schedule. I generally work on Tuesdays and Thursdays, usually starting by 7:00 a.m., and I go in on Mondays and Saturdays when the trailer arrives from the wharf. Once I get into work, I collect my equipment and trolley. I take them to my work station, where my supervisor provides me with my flock number for the day. Once the eggs arrive, I place them on a table and then put them in the tray, which holds about 165 eggs. I then transfer the trays to my trolley, which fits between 30-32 trays. Once the flock number has been placed on the trolley, I take it to the Incubator Room, where they are put in incubators for 19 days. My day ends at different times, depending on the work load, but I’m usually finished by 12:00 noon.

5. What gets you through a hectic work day? Talking with my team members about current issues and reminiscing about the past.

6. What is your favourite CB product? My favourite CB product is Smoked Chicken.

7. If you could be in another section of the group for a day, where would you go and why? I would go to the Arnold Road location because I am interested in seeing the different stages of the chicken being processed and packaged.

8. What has been your most embarassing moment at work? It’s very embarrassing to get to work early, wait on my flock number and everyone else gets theirs before I do. Once they get their flock number, they’re able to start working and all I can do is sit around and wait for my eggs to arrive.

9. Name your favourite chicken/pork dish. Sweet and sour chicken with fried rice.

Tips For Getting A Better Night’s Sleep Even though you’re going to bed early and getting in your 8 hours, you’re still feeling tired in the morning. Going through the work days are rough, with thoughts of quiet, relaxing naps constantly popping into your head. You can’t seem to figure out why you’re always exhausted but the problem may lie with how you’re sleeping. If you could use a little more energy during the day, step away from the caffeine, and try out a few quick tips to help you get a better night’s sleep.

1. Wake up and go to bed at the same time every day, including the weekends, to help your body establish a sleepwake schedule.

6. Create a comfy sleep environment. Fans, a cozy mattress and curtains to block out the sunlight, are just a few items you can use to make your room the ultimate sleep zone.

2. Don’t go to bed hungry or with a full stomach. Either way, you’re going to be uncomfortable and it’s going to affect your ability to fall asleep.

7. Beware of naps! They might seem like a great idea but naps can actually throw off your night time sleep. If you have to nap during the day, try not go over 30 minutes.

3. Use the same bedtime routine every night so your body knows when it’s time to relax and get some rest.

8. Turn off the gadgets. Research has found that artificial light from TVs, laptops and cellphones can prevent you from falling asleep.

4. Exercise regularly! Physical activity helps you to fall asleep faster and enjoy a deeper sleep. 5. Manage your stress. Write down a things to do list, ask for help or talk it out with a friend. If you’re stressed out, it’s likely to affect your sleep.

The CB Group will host its second Blood Drive “Give LOVE, Give BLOOD” on Thursday, October 30, 2014 at the Girl Guides Association of Jamaica. We encourage our team members to come out in their numbers to support this worthy initiative.

Why Donate Blood?

What To Expect?

You don’t need a special reason to give blood. You just need your own reason.

Come prepared. - Have a light meal and plenty to drink. - Bring your driver’s license or any other form of identification - Bring the names of medications you are taking.

- Some of us give blood because we were asked by a friend. - Some know that a family member or a friend might need blood some day. - Some believe it is the right thing we do. Whatever your reason, the need is constant and your contribution is important for a healthy and reliable blood supply. And you’ll feel good knowing you’ve helped change a life.

give love. give blood

Your gift of blood may help up to three people. Donated red blood cells do not last forever. They have a shelf-life of up to 42 days. A healthy donor may donate every 56 days.
