Wel come Each day I recognize how blessed I am to be part of such a dynamic company, which continually strives to be the leading innovator in the agrofood market, for the betterment of Jamaica and Jamaicans everywhere. A well-known proverb, “team work makes the dream work”, is a simple statement, which holds profound truth. Without each member of the CB Group collectively pooling their resources, their time, their energy and their skills, this company would not have achieved even half the things we can now boast about. Never take for granted how important YOU are to the CB Group. Without you, there is no way the mandate of ‘Safe Food from Farm to Fork’ would be a reality. YOU are the reason the CB Group of Companies is performing exceptionally well. I encourage you to seize every moment to be the best you can be and keep focused on the task at hand. Set targets for yourself and grant yourself personal rewards. Enjoy reading this month’s edition of Chat Bout as you learn about the many successes the CB Group has achieved and all the dreams we are pursuing in the months to come. Each of us is equally important in achieving the company’s strategic goals, and we must hold our heads high when we see the fruit of our labour. With God as our guide, may we all continue to work together, understanding the vital role we each play in ensuring our friends, our families and our neighbours are able to enjoy safe food. Sincerely,
Tyrone Cunningham Head, Logistics & Egg Operations

It’s a proven fact that people like to be treated well and our customers are no different. We are thankful for the continued support and whenever we can, we like to give back. Sheldon Williams is Jamaica’s Top Young Farmer Sheldon Willams, a young farmer from Seaford Town, Westmoreland, followed his dad into agriculture seven years ago. Over the years, Sheldon has worked hard at his SW Farm: rearing pigs, raising some 300 chickens per week and growing pineapples on 20 acres. For him, winning at Denbigh became a passion; a journey that led to a 3rd place finish when he last entered the competition in 2010. In the four years since, he has increased the number of pigs he looks after and improved technology on the farm by bringing in fans to cool the pigs and developing a new water system. All this hard work has paid off as Sheldon was named the 2014 Young Champion Farmer and also placed 2nd in the All Island Pig Farmer contest. “I figured out that I had won when I got to Denbigh and officials told me I needed to follow them,” says Sheldon, a contract pig farmer for Copperwood Pork. “I was very happy and quickly called my field manager and field officer to tell them the good news,” he shares. Still overjoyed by his win at Denbigh, Sheldon is already looking ahead and making future plans. He is going to establish a waste water treatment plant to purify drinking water, which he believes will help to make his farm even better.

NUTRAMIX Wins
BIG AT DENBIGH
As large crowds gathered at the Denbigh showground in Clarendon, Nutramix’s big, brightly coloured, yellow and blue booth stood out amongst a sea of exhibitors and buzzed with lots of people and activity during the three day event. The eye-catching space featured displays of Nutramix feeds, and curious visitors had a chance to interact with Nutramix staff and ask questions about the products. In addition to a very busy booth, the Nutramix team had plenty to be excited about, as several farms and individual farmers, who only use the “BIG feed”, won top awards at the event’s farming competitions.

NATALEE PASSELLE CHASES HER DREAMS Natalee Passelle has always had a dream: a strong desire to be a successful businesswoman. In 2013, she learned about Bad Dawg and decided to take a bold step: she quit her 9-5 job and bought her first cart. Challenges soon followed, her first location, once busy with customers quickly became quiet and a misunderstanding with the owner, forced her to find somewhere new. “I cried the evening when she told me that I couldn’t store my things at her property anymore,” recalls Natalee. “I started walking around town and that’s how I found my current location, right behind the Civic Centre in Downtown Montego Bay,” she explains. On any given day, the corner of Strand and Market Streets is jam packed with cars and pedestrians, and at the centre of it all, Natalee’s Bad Dawg cart is ready to serve a quick, affordable meal. From 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., the yellow and black, mobile kitchen is now a familiar part of the hectic landscape, eventually shifting locations to Parade Street in Sam Sharpe Square, until 10:00 p.m. or 11:00 p.m., depending on how business is going.

Earlier this year, Natalee increased her investment in the Bad Dawg brand and purchased a second cart that operates in the city’s Transport Centre. The determined entrepreneur has already set her sights on a third cart, which she is hoping to use as a mobile facility in the Freezone and in schools around town later this year. “If I had followed all my excuses about starting my own business, I would never have done it,” Natalee says. “Sometimes you just have to do it, you just have to start. Every day is going to come with its own challenge but once you have a goal, you make a plan, you embrace it and everything falls into its place,” she shares. We are proud of Natalee’s determination, so next time you’re in MoBay, stop by and support her Bigga Betta Badda business!

SMART GIFTS FOR A Big Baby Shower Smart Eggs was one of the sponsors of A Big Baby Shower, which recently took place at the Jamaica Pegasus. The event served as a parenting resource for expectant parents, new parents, seasoned parents and parents by association, and featured informative seminars and booths with products and services that will help moms and dads on their special journey. Families at A Big Baby Shower were able to learn about the importance of good nutrition during pregnancy from Krissy Morgan Scott, the Smart Eggs seminar speaker and health coach. Brand ambassadors interacted with visitors at the Smart Eggs booth throughout the day: showing off newly launched packaging and dozen packs, giving away gift baskets to mothers and colouring egg-inspired activity sheets with kids.

Creating Bonds
in Our Communities 12
CB Kids Take Home Denbigh Awards Though it takes a lot of responsibility, hard work and time, Noah Vaughan and Matthew Thomas still like to rear animals. From a very young age, Noah, now a seven year old student at St Hugh’s Prep, gladly followed his mom, Newport Mills’ Vet, Dr Gabrielle Young, on her many farm trips and eventually inherited her love for animals. Eleven year old Matthew, who will start attending Glenmuir High in September, developed a strong interest in animals when he was just a baby and quickly started caring for his own, a pastime his dad, Nutramix’s Winston Thomas, has supported.

“The boys are very interested in the livestock industry and it is important that they are guided in their development,” shares Dr Young. “They are the future farmers of Jamaica and will play a key role in feeding and sustaining a nation,” she explains. At this year’s Denbigh show, while most children were happy to enjoy bounce-a-bouts, trampolines, go-carts and other rides at the Kiddie’s Village, Noah and Matthew were busy getting ready to compete and show off their sheep at the event’s livestock contest.

As the crowd watched them closely, they demonstrated their expert handling skills and wowed the audience as they moved their animals in and out of the show ring. At the end of the day, both boys were very proud as they picked up wins in several categories: NOAH VAUGHAN • 1st Place – blackbelly ewe under 1 year • 2nd place – Katahdin ram under 1 year, other breeds ram 2 years and over • 3rd place – Katahdin ram under 1 year, Katahdin ewe 2 years and over MATTHEW THOMAS • 1st place – Katahdin ram 2 years and over, Blackbelly ewe 2 years and over • 3rd place – Blackbelly ewe 2 years and over

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF…
Ricardo Wilson Facility Coordinator, Logistics Department
1. How long have you been a member of the CB Group? I started working with the CB Group twenty one years ago in the Accounts Department at Newport Mills. Since then, I’ve worked in the Field Department, the Processing Plant, the former Inventory Department and the Logistics Department.
2. What section of the group are you in and what is your role? I am currently the Facility Coordinator in the Logistics Department at Freetown. I am responsible for managing the location, accounting for inventory, including the transportation of goods, confirming that customers get the products they ordered, coordinating the trailer drivers and ensuring the Freetown facility is up to standard.

3. What is the best part about working at CB? I really enjoy being a part of the significant changes, which have taken place since I began working with the group. We have reduced the number of customer complaints received about soft products as we are able to keep goods frozen for longer. We used to take all day to process 30,000 chickens and now we are able to get through 70,000 chickens in a short period of time. We also previously struggled to bag 3,000 cases of chicken and today, we can easily bag 6,000 – 7,000 a day.
4. Describe a typical day for you from the moment you arrive at work till when you leave. My day usually begins around 5:45 a.m. when I start getting calls regarding our operation. Around 6:00 a.m., the foreman updates me on the previous night’s activities including actual loaded quantity, none delivery and reasons for them, and the status of containers and trucks. Early in the morning, I have to ensure that we have adequate containers at both Arnold Road and Freetown. I schedule times for the trailer drivers, supervise updates to the warehouse management system and confirm there are enough persons assigned to the various shifts. Work ends at different hours: 6:00 p.m., 7:00 p.m., or even 8:00 p.m., depending on how the day is going. I don’t really have a set schedule, I’m always on call, ready to respond if there is ever an issue.
5. What gets you through a hectic work day? A word of prayer and good team members who are disciplined and committed to their jobs.
6. What is your favourite CB product? My favourite CB product is Mixed Parts, which has chicken cut up in several pieces.
7. If you could be in another section of the group for a day, where would you go and why? I’ve been lucky to work in many departments at CB and I can honestly say I’m very happy in Logistics. I like a good challenge and our operation is dynamic since I am constantly planning for changes. I’m also a very hands on persons and this job allows me to get on the road and personally interact with customers.
8. What has been your most embarassing moment at work? Thankfully, I’ve never had one.
9. Name your favourite chicken/pork dish. Fried rice with chicken and pork.

Tips For Preventing Food Waste Across the island, Jamaicans are throwing away money by needlessly wasting food. At some point, we’ve all had to get rid of produce that has gone bad, or worse, put out perfectly good food that we no longer wanted. To help you save some extra cash, we’ve put together 10 tips to reduce food waste.
1. Check your fridge and cupboard, and make a list of the items you need before you go shopping.
meals: leftover meat makes a great soup and old fruits are perfect for delicious smoothies.
2. Never go grocery shopping on an empty stomach as you’re likely to end up buying things you don’t need.
7. Tired of eating the same thing night after night? Freeze your leftovers in freezer bags so that you can use them up on a later date.
3. Be aware of the quantities. Buying in bulk does not always make sense if you only need a small portion of a food item. 4. Purchase local foods since they are fresher than international goods, which have to go through long trips. 5. Organize your fridge with FIFO: First In, First Out. After unpacking groceries, move older foods to the front and newer ones to the back of the fridge so that you can avoid missing expiry dates. 6. Eat leftovers! You can always use them to create new, tasty
tid bits — tips for preventing food waste
8. Plan meals around foods in your home that are close to expiring. 9. Find better ways to store your food. If you’re throwing away stale cereal, try keeping it in an air tight plastic container instead of the box so that it has a longer life. 10. Check your garbage for a week and make a list of what you’re throwing away. You may need to make some changes in how often you shop, how much you buy or how you store the food in your home.
