why you should make a budget

Welcome The 2015 Denbigh Agricultural, Industrial and Food Show has underscored the success of the CB Group, and our Nutramix brand – an important focus for us this year. The ‘Nutramix fed’ animals featured prominently among the winners in the judging competition, taking the majority of top prizes for the various categories. As we play our part in increasing local agricultural production, and promoting sustainable agriculture, our farmers are assured of value in feeding the “Big Feed”.

For the second year running, we are proud of our association with the National Champion Farmer – Richard Bennett, CB contract poultry grower and the Champion Young Farmer – Sheldon Williams – Copperwood contract pig grower. We are also extremely happy to announce that, Michelle Black, the National Woman Champion Farmer for 2015, is also a Nutramix farmer! We congratulate these hard working Jamacians and salute their achievements. We are again in the season for Pan Chicken. ‘Pan X’, celebrating its 10th year promises to be bigger and better than ever. Families across Jamaica look forward to this major event series to enjoy the culinary delights of our favourite ‘Pan Men and Women’, prizes and surprises from our associate sponsors and great entertainment for all. We appreciate the effort of the team responsible for this landmark calendar event. As we move into September, we are grateful for the increasing demand for the products offered by our Group. Meeting this demand will require increased output, particularly as we approach the December quarter. With hard work and dedication, we can ensure adequate supply to Jamaicans of their preferred family brands.

Life happens fast,

update your insurance policies today Time flies by really quickly doesn’t it? And so much can happen in our lives in only a few short months. Think, what’s happened in your life since 2014? Did You Know? That under the insurance policies, payments cannot be made to a minor? If your beneficiary is a minor (that is under the age of 18 years) a Trustee must be appointed.

Have you recently updated the information about yourself and your designated beneficiaries on your insurance policies?

Who can be a Trustee? A Trustee is any competent adult; most of all, it must be someone whom you trust to be in charge of monies, and the welfare of your beneficiary who is a minor.

It’s quick, easy, and important Many persons might say nothing has changed since the last time they redid the forms. Even if this is true, it doesn’t hurt to take a little time to go over your information. The 10 minutes you take to revisit and complete your forms may save your loved ones from additional stress during their time of grief. Reach out to your location’s HRD coordinator or Adrienne Smith (adrienne.smith@mycbgroup.com) at Group Office if you have any questions, or to find out how you can get started updating the required forms. Remember, careful planning in any situation can save a lot of trouble later on. Let’s be proactive and ensure that the beneficiaries stated on your forms are the persons you want to receive the funds in the unfortunate event of your passing. All the best, The HRD Team

A Day In The Life Of…

Kaydia Rowe QA Technician

How long have you been working with the CB Group? For 5 years now. What section of the Group are you in and what is your role? I now work with the Quality Assurance (QA) team at CB Egg Farm. Previously, I was at Copperwood for Over 4 years, and I worked briefly at Arnold Road and Newport Mills before that. For you, what is the best part about working at CB? CB is a very dynamic company and there is a lot of opportunity for young people – I have gotten a lot of experience, from feed- to chicken, pork and now eggs. You really do get a lot of exposure; One recent high point for me was when I saw myself in the Observer the other doing quality checks for our egg exports. Tell us about a typical day at work for you? From start to finish. A typical day for me – I go in, and first check with the workers in the sorting room and ensure they are adhering to our standards for Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). Then I check the temperature for the cold room (Critical Control Point #4) to ensure there are no temperature breaches, before also checking the temperature

cb big ups — a day in the life of… kaydia rowe

18

of the ambient rooms (eggs that aren’t place on cold storage) to ensure there aren’t any temperature spikes. I then visit the difference chicken houses - I visit them from the youngest to the oldest, to ensure no pathogens are transferred from the older to more vulnerable younger birds. Here I am in charge of Critical Control Point number 2 which is the administering of water to the birds – I check the PH and chlorine concentration in the water. I also do temperature checks on the chicken houses themselves – heat and poor quality water really affects the layers productivity – it goes hand in hand. What gets you through a hectic work day? People describe me as a perfectionist – if it’s not done properly – it’s not Kaydia. If it’s a rough day, for example around audit times – which are very hectic – I’m driven by results. I look for that positive result and that is my driving force, getting it done right and achieving.

Name your favourite chicken/ pork dish? Kaydia’s Pot Roast Chicken – I season it up with escallion, thyme, pepper, and the other usual – I put in the pot with a little bit of oil and make it simmer and roast by itself. Just like pot roasted pork, it’s really good.

People describe me as a perfectionist – if it’s not done properly – it’s not Kaydia

What is your favourite CB product? Caribbean Passion Corn Pork – I do it simply in the microwave or I do it Run Down – the real old time way with coconut from the husk. If you could be in another section of the group for a day, where would you go and why? I would say Group Office – Human Resources, especially when it comes on to training – I have always admired how they put together the training programmes for the various parts of the Group. What has been your most embarrassing moment at work? When I was at Arnold Road – I was new and ready and excited for work – I had on my stilettos and put on my second face and was ready to go – I was stepping out and slipped from the top of the stairs and fell all the way down on my bottom. And all the drivers saw me – but, the bright side is they were gentlemen and came to help.

Why You Should Make a Personal or Family Budget 1.

Gives you control over your money. It saves you the stress of suddenly having to adjust to lack of funds because you did not initially plan how to spend them

2.

Keeps you focused on your money goals. If you are working with limited resources, budgeting makes it easier to make ends meet.

3.

Makes you aware what is going on with your money. Budgeting saves you from wondering every end of the month where your money went. It enables you to know what you can afford, take advantage of buying and investing opportunities, and plan how to lower your debt. It also tells you what is important to you based on how you allocate your funds.

did you know?

4.

Helps you organize your spending and savings. So it’s easy for you to make adjustments. A budget also serves as a reference for organizing your bills, receipts, and financial statements.

5.

Enables you to save for expected and unexpected costs

6.

Enables you to communicate with your significant others about money. If you share your money with your spouse, family, or anyone, a budget can communicate how you use money as a group. This builds teamwork, working for common financial goals and prevents conflict over money. Including the kids in family budgeting teaches them spending responsibility and accountability.

7.

Provides you with an early warning for potential money problems – and be able to make adjustments before the problem appears.

8.

Helps you determine if you can take debt and how much. Taking debt is not necessarily a bad thing if the debt is necessary or you can afford it. Budgeting shows you how much a debt load you can realistically take.

9.

Enables you to produce extra money. In budgeting, you get to identify and eliminate unnecessary spending like late fees, penalties and interests. These small savings add up over time.

BACK TO SCHOOL

How To Save On School Supplies It’s back to school time again, and many of us have already got the things the kids will need for the classroom. Here are some quick tips to help you stretch the dollar this school term if you’re still shopping. 1. Stick to the school’s list of required supplies. Your child might want more ‘highend’ items, but straying from the recommended supplies can increase costs. And remember, teachers also often want items different than the general list sent out by the school. 2. Ask your child’s school for info on any community programs that are distributing school supplies.

tid bits — back to school savings

3. Recycle and reuse where possible. Before you even consider shopping, see what you already have. Consider reusing and recycling where possible. • Go through last year’s supplies and take what is still good to use. Clean, mend, and redecorate as necessary. • Ask other family members or friends what they have that they don’t need anymore. • Wash, clean, & stitch up any tears or holes in backpacks, lunch bags, etc. to give them another year’s use. 4. Set a budget. Knowing in advance how much there is to spare will keep everyone’s minds focused on the limits to spending. Withdraw only that amount of cash. Have your children involved in this process so that they can understand budgeting.

5. Check the weekly store sales advertisements. This can also be fun for your child to find the best deals on their needed items as well as serve as a lesson in being responsible with money 6. Team up with other parents. Use your group buying power to purchase school supplies in bulk at a reduced cost. Split the supplies between you. This is extremely helpful if the children are in the same class, and may also make “But all my friends get this or that (expensive) thing” harder for your child to say. 7. Wait until school starts. This is a little difficult, but with your child’s teacher’s help or some knowledge of the upcoming timetable, you can find out which supplies won’t be needed until later in the school year.
