financial planning for the new year
Welcome As we look towards enjoying Christmas with family and friends, we reflect on a year for which Jamaicans are thankful. We celebrated the achievements of our athletes at the Rio Olympics, as once again Jamaica dominated and came out on top in both male and female sprinting. We continue to be thankful as we were spared the serious blows of Hurricane Matthew, even as we support our neighbour Haiti in their recovery efforts from the devastating impact that they received. The positive reports on Jamaica’s economy, including increased production from our farmers for the year 2016, and projected growth in the tourism sector, all seem to suggest increasing demand for products from the CB Group. We applaud the efforts of the Marketing team for successfully staging several events this year including PAN, Jamaica Food & Drink Festival and the Nutramix Double-Six Championship for farmers. Once again, Jamaicans will be able to celebrate the Yuletide season enjoying products from the CB Group.

Ham: 101 BONE-IN or BONELESS? Well… simply enough, a boneless ham has had all the bones removed and are then bound up and tumbled in order to fill any voids in the meat. They’re easier to carve and serve. But just like a chicken, a bone-in ham has more flavour because of the bone itself which imparts flavour into the meat. The bones can later on be used to make soup or ham stock.

Fact #1: Fact #2:
A ‘ham’ refers to a specific cut of pork – not how it’s cured or cooked. The term ‘ham’ actually refers to the hind leg of a hog.
Leg or picnic? Leg Ham: Includes the ‘butt’ and the ‘shank’ ends. The butt is the upper part of the ham - more ‘rump’ and so more fatty, flavourful and tender, whereas the shank end is the lower end - more leg and less fat. Picnic Ham: Sometimes the front shoulders of a hog are smoked and called ‘picnic hams’ but they’re not really ham cuts, they’re pork shoulders cured in ham fashion.

Team Shooters wins Grand Champion title
The Nutramix team wheeled out west to Anchovy High in St James on November 5th where 32 teams battled it out for the Regional Champion title. At the end of the night, it was team Shooters that dominated and left with the $50,000 cash prize along with their trophies and other prizes. It was on November 12th where the reigning regional winners would meet face to face at the Alfred Sangster Auditorium at UTECH. The afternoon started with a pre-tournament where any and everyone was welcomed to sign up and show off their skills. Little did they know that the winner and runner-up would get a chance to sit amongst the finalists for a shot at the $250,000 grand prize.

The momentum built as onlookers cheered for their favourite teams who one by one got knocked out. Then it was that moment… one table… two teams – Gaza Nation from St Thomas, and Shooters from St James. The air got tense and the crowd closed in. Half an hour later, team Shooters licked their final play and proudly rose from the table. Big congrats to the two: Delmond Grant and Terrence Daniegan who fought hard! Many thanks to all those who came out and supported the tournament! What a great way to end the first ever Nutramix Double Six Championship!

Front Runner one year olds get highest bids at Yearling Sale November 13th was an exciting day for Front Runner (FR) as buyers came in from all over the Caribbean and as far as New York to place bids for one year old horses at the Annual TOBA (Thoroughbred Owners & Breeders Association [of Jamaica]) Yearling Sale. Only 130 lots were being offered in the sale, the lowest in the past few years, but despite the relatively low turnout, there were quite a few lots that caught the eye based on their breeding. At the auction held at Caymanas Park, a FR fed Chestnut Colt from Everglades Farms and a FR fed Chestnut Filly from HAM Stables sold for a cool $3 million each. The closest sale to these landed at just over $1 million. It’s not called The #1 Horse Feed for nothin’! around the brand in 30 days — front runner

Title Sponsor of Minard Livestock Show
The 17th staging of the Minard Livestock Show and Beef Festival hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in collaboration with the Agro Investment Corporation was held on Thursday November 10th at the Minard Estate in Brown’s Town, St Ann. Each year, the show seeks to strengthen the relationship between livestock farmers and users of the livestock products so as to really grow the agricultural industry and economy. The day was full of activities, display of animals, competitions and festivities. Many schools, especially from St. Ann turned out on the day, which provided a great opportunity for students to learn, gain exposure to the industry and see that agriculture is a noble occupation and can be lucrative if given the chance. This year was really special for Nutramix, as it became the Title Sponsor for the event. The enthusiasm and buzz demonstrate that local agriculture continues to evolve.

Lee’s Food Fair
in Boulevard Super Centre The #KnowYourPork initiative continues to grow the brand’s prominence in the local market and increase brand equity. The campaign’s Making the Cut seminar first intrigued Chad Lym and Pauline Harper from Lee’s Food Fair, but it was not until after Jamaica Food & Drink Festival’s first event this fall - Pork Palooza, which boasted all things Copperwood, that it was a done deal.

Creating Bonds
in Our Communities 16
A day for education, fitness and fun Our annual CB Group UWI 5K was a great success on November 13th having almost 300 CB staff and family signing up. The morning was filled with friends and families supporting a great cause with around 2,400 folks running, walking and 'wheeling' in the name of education. This turnout is an improvement from last year which had about 2,000 finishers. Khadine "Miss Kitty, The Fluffy Diva" Hylton hosted the event with dance-offs, competitions and giveaways. A big thank you to all those who came out and many thanks to all those who donated though were unable to participate. We can’t forget the kids who came and ran in the Smart Eggs Kids K – to their parents, we appreciate your support!

First Live Animal Export: A Milestone for CB Group our community — cbg’s first live animal export
20
In September, 70 goats and 18 pigs were shipped from Norman Manley International Airport, Kingston to St Vincent in an agreement facilitated by the CB Group and the St Vincent Government. This represents the first ever live export of animal breeding stock or genetics, with the pigs being delivered from our very own Newport Genetics facility in St Catherine. The delivery of goats was aided by local Jamaican goat farmers and the Ministry of Agriculture’s Bodles Research Station. Export Manager Sylburn Thomas states that, “This shows what can be achieved within CARICOM when we partner together and leverage our respective expertise for shared prosperity and development.” CBG’s Livestock Support Specialist Stanford Hamilton had accompanied the animals to St Vincent to ensure their safe delivery and handover. Thank you to all those in our CBG family who have facilitated and assisted with this major accomplishment. Exciting times ahead!

Add ½ cup of water if wine has evaporated. Roast for about 20 minutes longer, until an instant-read thermometer inserted in the inner thigh registers 155° to 160° and juices are running clear. 4. Transfer the bird to a cutting board and tent with foil. Remove aromatics and vegetables from the cavity, carve the chicken and serve.

Your 2017 finance resolutions With each new year, we all get busy making resolutions to live a healthier lifestyle. Sure, eating better and exercising more are certainly good things, but let’s not forget that resolutions should apply to the overall health of your personal finances too… after all, how else are you gonna afford healthier food options and a gym membership? Kidding aside, do follow the tips below for healthy financial resolutions. 1. Develop a budget and stick to it Identify your monthly income and expenses. Add them up to compare the two and ensure that you are spending less than you earn. If your expenses outweigh your income, you’ll need to make adjustments such as reducing your discretionary spending. Evaluate your budget often and make changes whenever necessary. Your smart phone may be a great tool to assist! “PocketGuard Budget App”, “You Need A Budget” and “GoodBudget” are 3 of the top rated apps for iphone and android. 2. Set financial goals or reprioritize current ones What better time to set new financial goals than with the new year. Take a look at your goals for 2016. Did you want to increase your cash reserve, save for a down payment on a home or start saving for retirement? Have your personal or financial circumstances changed this past year? Take into account all that will affect your new goals and then clearly define them.
tid bits — financial planning for the new year
3. Make sure your investment portfolio is still on target Do you still have the same timeline for investing as you did this year? Has your tolerance for risk changed? Do you have any increased or decreased need for liquidity? Does any investment in your portfolio represent a too large or too small a part of your potfolio? The answers to these questions will determine whether or not your investments are suitable in reaching your new goals. 4. Make it a priority to reduce debt Keep track of all your credit card balances keeping in mind interest rates and hidden fees and avoid late fees. Pay off high-interest debt first and considering taking advantage of debt consolidation/refinancing programs. Do not charge more than you can pay off at the end of each billing cycle. The start of the new year may be a great time to meet with a financial professional. They can help: • Determine your income, assets and liabilities • Identify financial goals • Understand specific products/services • Monitor your overall financial plan • Adjust your plan if needs be Good luck with your new year’s resolutions!
